In 1990 a project to develop a dry deposition monitoring method of SO2, NH3 and NO2 to Speulder forest in the Netherlands began. Detailed annual deposition fluxes for these gases were measured throughout November 1992 to December 1995. This paper describes the measurement set-up and the analysis of the deposition parameters for SO2. The dry deposition velocity was usually smaller than the maximum Vd, showing a resistance to surface uptake, except for periods when the canopy is wet and surface resistance is negligible. Several methods were tested to estimate annual average fluxes from the gradient measurements. Annual fluxes were estimated by selecting the data for periods fulfilling gradient theory and extending the data by using an inferential method for the other periods. The surface resistance parametrisation used in the inferential method was tested using the selected data and was found to yield systematic larger fluxes of the order of 20%. Annual fluxes were 465 mol ha-1 a-1 in 1992/1993, 460 mol ha-1 a-1 in 1994 and 330 mol ha-1 a-1 in 1995. The uncertainty in the annual flux was estimated to be 25%. The annual average dry deposition velocity was 1.5 cm s-1. No large differences were found in deposition parameters between each of the three years.  相似文献

Atmospheric deposition of N and S on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems causes effects induced by eutrophication and acidification. Effects of eutrophication include forest damage, NO3 pollution of groundwater and vegetation changes in forests, heathlands and surface waters due to an excess of N. Effects of acidification include forest damage, groundwater pollution, and loss of fish populations due to Al mobilization. Critical loads (deposition levels) for N and S on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in the Netherlands related to these effects have been derived by empirical data and steady-state acidification models. Critical loads of N generally vary between 500 and 1500 mol c ha?1 yr?1 for forests, heathlands and surface waters and between 1500 and 3600 for phreatic groundwaters. Critical loads of total acid (S and N) vary between 300 to 500 mol c ha?1 yr?1 for phreatic groundwaters and surface waters and between 1100 to 1700 mol ha?1 yr?1 for forests. On the basis of the various critical loads a deposition target for total acid of 1400 mol c ha?1 yr?1 has been set in the Netherlands from which the N input should be less than 1000 mol c ha?1 yr?1. This level, to be reached in the year 2010, implies an emission reduction of 80–90% in SO2, NO x and NH3 in the Netherlands and of about 30% in neighboring countries compared to 1980 emissions.  相似文献

Forest soils may become an increasingly important source of N2O, due to disturbances to the forest ecosystem (e.g. fertilization to increase growth, or atmospheric deposition of air-borre nitrogen compounds such as NH3, NO3 and NOx). A lysimeter experiment was used to study the effects of different amounts of N input [0 (control), 30 kg (Medium) and 90 kg (High) N ha?1 y?1 as NH4NO3] on fluxes of N2O, measured by the close chamber method. The estimated annual N2O flux were about 0.4 kg N2O-N ha?1 for control, 0.9 kg N2O-N ha?1 for medium N and 1.8 kg N2O-N ha?1 for high N treatments. The relation between the estimated annual N2O flux and fertilizer dose showed an almost perfect proportionality between fertilizer dose and the increase in N2O flux. This is important, since one crucial question is wether we can extrapolate results from high N-doses to situations with low amounts of N inputs prevailing in forests exposed to moderate input of N. The increase in N2O fluxes from the control to the fertilised treatments corresponds to 1.7% of the annual N input in the medium N treatments and 1.6% of the annual input in the high N treatment.  相似文献

We estimated the total inorganic fluxes of nitrogen (N), sulfur (S), chloride (Cl?, sodium (Na+, calcium (Ca2+, magnesium (Mg2+, potassium (K+ and hydronium (H+. The resistance deposition algorithm that is programmed as part of the CALMET/CALPUFF modeling system was used to generate spatially-distributed deposition velocities, which were then combined with measurements of urban and rural concentrations of gas and particle species to obtain dry deposition rates. Wet deposition rates for each species were determined from rainfall concentrations and amounts available from the National Acid Deposition Program (NADP) monitoring network databases. The estimated total inorganic nitrogen deposition to the Tampa Bay watershed (excluding Tampa Bay) was 17 kg-N ha?1 yr?1 or 9,700 metric tons yr?1, and the ratio of dry to wet deposition rates was ~2.3 for inorganic nitrogen. The largest contributors to the total N flux were ammonia (NH3 and nitrogen oxides (NO x at 4.6 kg-N ha?1 yr?1 and 5.1 kg-N ha?1 yr?1, respectively. Averaged wet deposition rates were 2.3 and 2.7 kg-N ha?1 yr?1 for NH4 + and NO3 ?, respectively.  相似文献

The present study aimed to elucidate the atmosphere–forest exchange of ammoniacal nitrogen (NHX-N) at a young larch ecosystem. NHX-N exchanges were measured at a remote site in northernmost Japan where 4-year-old larches were growing after a pristine forest had been clear-cut and subsequent dense dwarf bamboo (Sasa) had been strip-cut. The site was a clean area for atmospheric ammonia with mean concentrations of 0.38 and 0.11 μg N m?3 in snowless and snow seasons, respectively. However, there was a general net emission of NHX-N. The annual estimated emission of NHX-N of 4.8 kg N ha?1 year?1 exceeded the annual wet deposition of 2.4 kg N ha?1 year?1, but the weekly exchange fluxes may have been underestimated by 28–60%. The main cause of the ammonia loss from the young larch ecosystem was probably enhanced nitrogen supply stimulated by the cutting of the pristine forest and Sasa, in particular, the Sasa.  相似文献

One-year field measurements were conducted in a Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) forest, located in Gunma Prefecture, Japan. On the basis of the meteorological and atmospheric concentration data, the dry deposition of SO2, HNO3, NO2 and HCl was estimated using the inferential method. The annual dry deposition of H+ was estimated at 721 eq ha?1yr?1, which was 40% larger than the measured annual wet deposition of H+ (514 eq ha?1yr?1). Therefore, dry deposition is an important pathway for the atmospheric input of H+ to the forest in the study site. The contribution of each gas to the dry deposition of H+ was as follows: SO2, 25%; HNO3, 32%; NO2, 10%; and HCl, 33%. The extremely high contribution of HCl appeared to be caused by the high emission intensity of HCl due to waste incineration in the site region. The differences between estimated deposition and throughfall and stemflow measurements indicated that about 80% of the total deposition of H+ was taken up by the canopy.  相似文献

Increasing nitrogen deposition due to human activity might have a serious impact on ecosystem functions such as the nitrogen transformations conducted by microbes. We therefore focused on nitrous oxide (N2O) production as an indicator of soil microbial activity. The rates of N2O emission from the forest floor were measured every two weeks in two forest stands in the central part of Japan: a red pine stand at Kannondai and a deciduous stand at Yasato. Nitrogen deposition rates by throughfall were 30.6 kg N ha?1 y?1 at Kannondai and 15.7 at Yasato. The rates of N2O emission ranged from 0.5 to 14.2 µg N m?2 h?1 (mean 4.5) at Kannondai and from 0.2 to 7.0 µg N m?2 h?1 (mean 2.3) at Yasato. The N2O emission rate showed significant positive relationships with soil temperature and nitrogen deposition during the preceding two weeks. The annual emission rates of N2O were 0.38 kg N ha?1 y?1 at Kannondai and 0.20 at Yasato. As a the annual nitrogen deposition, these rates were 1.23% at Kannondai and 1.27% at Yasato.  相似文献

Information on atmospheric inputs, water chemistry and hydrology were combined to evaluate elemental mass balances and assess temporal changes in elemental transport from 1983 through 1992 for the Arbutus Lake watershed. This watershed is located within a northern hardwood ecosystem at the Huntington Forest within the central Adirondack Mountains of New York (USA). Changes in water chemistry, including increasing NO3 ? concentrations (1.1 μmol c , L?1 yr-1), have been detected during this study period. Starting in 1991 hydrological flow has been measured from Arbutus Lake and these measurements were compared with predicted flow using the BROOK2 hydrological simulation model. The model adequately (r2=0.79) simulated flow from this catchment and was used to estimate drainage for earlier periods when direct hydrological measurements were not available. Modeled drainage water losses coupled with estimates of wet and dry atmospheric deposition were used to calculate solute budgets. Export of SO4 2? (831 mol c ha?1 yr?1) from the greater Arbutus Lake watershed exceeded estimates of atmospheric deposition in an adjacent hardwood stand suggesting an additional source of S. These large drainage losses of SO4 2? also contributed to the drainage fluxes of basic cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, K+ and Na+). Most of the atmospheric inputs of inorganic N were retained (average of 74% of wet precipitation and 85% total deposition) in the watershed. There were differences among years (56 to 228 mol ha?1 yr?1) in drainage water losses of N with greatest losses occurring during a warm, wet period (1989–1991).  相似文献

Virgin fir trees have been dying on Mt. Oyama, which is located in the southwestern part of Kanto Plain, although the frequency of death seems to be reducing recently. We report elevational patterns of acid deposition in precipitation and throughfall under fir and cedar canopies and nitrogen saturation in the forest ecosystem on Mt. Oyama. The deposition fluxes of major inorganic ions in precipitation were nearly constant regardless of elevation except for hydrogen and ammonium ions, whereas the deposition fluxes of all major inorganic ions in throughfall among cedar increased. The 5-year average of annual nitrate deposition in precipitation from 1994 to 1998 showed 19.3 – 23.5 kg ha?1 yr?1 (annual inorganic total N deposition: 9.6 – 10.7 kgN ha?1 yr?1) at four sites ranging in elevation from 500 to 1252 m, whereas the deposition in both cedar and fir throughfall was over 6 times greater than that in precipitation. The average soil surface nitrate concentration in 1998 was 140 µg g?1 (the range: 21.1 – 429 µg g?1, n=80) and the 7-year average of nitrate concentration in stream water from 1992 to 1998 was 4.81 mg L?1 (the range: 2.38 – 20.6 mg L?1, n=317). Our results indicate that nitrogen saturation is occurring in the forest ecosystem because of high N deposition, probably via acid fog, on Mt. Oyama.  相似文献

Critical loads of acidity were estimated for upland forests in Eastern Canada using the steady-state Simple Mass Balance (SMB) Model. A consistent methodology was applied to the entire region, although critical loads were estimated separately for the Atlantic provinces (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland), Quebec and Ontario using different data sources. In this project, critical load estimates and steady-state exceedance values did not include the effect of forest fire and forest harvesting, which could have a considerable impact on critical loads in Eastern Canada. The observed soil pH – base saturation relationship for forest soils indicated that the constants used into the calculation of alkalinity leaching should be set to 10 (M/M) for the molar Bc/Al ratio in soil leachate and 109 (mol L?1)2 for the gibbsite dissolution constant. The area-weighted median critical load for each province varied between 519 (Quebec) and 2063 eq ha?1 y?1 (Prince Edward Island), with a median critical load value for Eastern Canada of 559 eq ha?1 y?1. It is estimated that approximately 52% of the mapped area is exceeded in terms of acidity according to the 1994–1998 average total (wet + dry) atmospheric deposition. Greatest exceedances occurred in Ontario and Quebec and in the south of Nova Scotia, due to low critical loads and high loads of acid deposition.  相似文献

Turnover and fluxes of C and N through microbial biomass were investigated on a research site in the grassland region of southwestern Germany. For a period of twelve months, biomass C was determined every 2 weeks and biomass N every 4 weeks (Fumigation-Extraction). This was done at fertilized plots as well as on plots, which had not been fertilized for eight years. Biomass C and N accounted for 1.5–7.5% of the soil C and 2–9% of the soil nitrogen. Unfertilized plots contained more biomass C and N than fertilized plots. No seasonal influence on the amount of the microbial biomass was visible. C/N ratios were not related to fertilization events. An increase of the C/N ratio with depth suggests a dominance of fungi in the subsurface horizons. Estimates of biomass C and N turnover were calculated by dividing the total measured losses of biomass by the average quantity of biomass present (McGill et al., 1986), annual fluxes of carbon and nitrogen were calculated by dividing annual mean C(N) by the average C(N) in biomass (Jenkinson and Ladd, 1981). Average turnover rates for biomass C varied between 1.4 and 4.5 a?1, turnover rates for nitrogen were slower (1.2–3.3 a?1). Carbon Ruxes through the microbial biomass range from 5000 to 8000 kg ha?1 a?1, while nitrogen fluxes range from 400 to 700 kg ha?1 a?1.  相似文献

The leaching of Ca, Mg, and K from canopies is a major pathway of these cations into forest soils. Our aim was to quantify rates of canopy leaching and to identify driving factors at the regional scale using annual fluxes of bulk precipitation and throughfall from 37 coniferous and deciduous forests of North and Central Europe. Total deposition of Ca, Mg, K, and H+ was estimated with Na as an index cation. The median canopy leaching increased in the order: Mg (0.11 kmolc ha–1 a–1) < Ca (0.31 kmolc ha–1 a–1) < K (0.39 kmolc ha–1 a–1). Canopy leaching of Ca and K was positively correlated with the calculated total H+ deposition and H+ buffered in the canopy, whereas canopy leaching of Mg was not. With contrasting effects, fluxes of SO4‐S and NH4‐N in throughfall explained to 64 % (P<0.001) of the Ca canopy leaching. Fluxes of NH4‐N and Ca were negatively correlated, suggesting that buffering of H+ by NH3 deposition reduced canopy leaching of Ca. Amount of bulk precipitation and SO4‐S in throughfall were identified as much weaker driving factors for canopy leaching of K (r2=0.28, P<0.01). Our results show that Ca is the dominant cation in buffering the H+ input in the canopy. At the regional and annual scale, canopy leaching of Mg appears to be unaffected by H+ deposition and H+ buffering in the canopy.  相似文献

The present study aims to establish the annual NH3 deposition to an inland heathland in Denmark using a micro-meterological approach with passive wind-vane flux samplers. The integrating samplers were replaced at weekly intervals from May 1995 to May 1996. The average concentration, 2.05 μg m-3 at the heathland is at a moderate level when compared to heathlands in other parts of Europe. The average deposition velocity was 0.83 cm s-1 which is within the range of depositon velocities found for other heathlands in Europe. The average canopy resistance was found to be relatively high, 61 s -1. The measurements yielded a total NH3-N deposition of 2.4 (± 0.9) kg ha-1 yr-1 with a data coverage of 71% for 1995/1996. In 40% of this time the flux is regarded as zero because the flux is not significant different from zero. In 60% of this time the significant fluxes varied from –0.052 μg m-2 s-1 (deposition equal 16.4 kg N ha-1 yr-1) to 0.089 μg m-2 s-1 (emission equal 28.2 kg N ha-1 yr-1). The method is only able to direct measure significant fluxes down to the equivalence of 0.010 μg m-2 s-1 (approximately 3.2 kg ha-1 yr-1). Therefore the exact deposition cannot be determined by the applied method at very low deposition sites such as a coastal heathland in Denmark. In a high-deposition area as in the central Netherlands the method gave significant fluxes with a 100% data coverage for a two month period.  相似文献

Atmospheric air pollution levels and long-term effects on the environment caused by simultaneous presence of SO2 and oil shale alkaline fly ash during the last five decades (since 1950) were investigated. The annual critical value of SO2 for forest (20 µg m?3) was surpassed in 1% (~35 km2) of the study area where the load was 30–40 µg m?3. No effect of long-term SO2 concentrations of up to 10–11 µg m?3 (0.5-h max up to 270 µg m?3) and simultaneous fly ash loads of up to 95 µg m?3 (1000 µg m?3) on the growth and needle longevity of Pinus sylvestris was established. The yearly deposition (average load up to 20–100 kg S ha?1) was alkaline rather than acidic due to an elevated base cation deposition in 1960–1989. Since 1990, the proportion of SO2 in the balance of components increased: about 70–85% of the total area was affected while the ratio of annual average concentrations of SO2 to fly ash was over 1. The limit values of fly ash for Sphagnum mosses and conifers in the presence of SO2 are recommended.  相似文献

Aircraft measurements of the air pollutants SO2 and sulfate (SOx is defined as SO2 plus sulfate), plus data on wind velocity, wind direction and depth of the planetary boundary layer, enable the calculation of transboundary mass fluxes of SOx. When emission data are available, an emission-deposition balance of SOx can be determined. The results of a measurement flight, carried out on 12 February, 1986, are presented. Two tracks were flown, along the eastern and along the western border of the Netherlands, respectively. The wind was easterly. The calculated deposition flux of SOx is converted to an area-averaged dry deposition velocity (ν d ). The result, ν d = 1.2 × 10?2 m s?1, seems to be in good agreement with literature data.  相似文献

Evaluation of carbon dynamics is of great concern worldwide in terms of climate change and soil fertility. However, the annual CO2 flux and the effect of land management on the carbon budget are poorly understood in Sub-Saharan Africa, owing to the relative dearth of data for in situ CO2 fluxes. Here, we evaluated seasonal variations in CO2 efflux rate with hourly climate data in two dry tropical croplands in Tanzania at two sites with contrasting soil textures, viz. clayey or sandy, over four consecutive crop-cultivation periods of 40 months. We then: (1) estimated the annual CO2 flux, and (2) evaluated the effect of land management (control plot, plant residue treatment plot, fertilizer treatment plot, and plant residue and fertilizer treatment plot) on the CO2 flux and soil carbon stock at both sites. Estimated annual CO2 fluxes were 1.0–2.2 and 0.9–1.9 Mg C ha?1 yr?1 for the clayey and sandy sites, respectively. At the end of the experiment, crop cultivation had decreased the surface soil carbon stocks by 2.4 and 3.0 Mg C ha?1 (soil depth 0–15 cm) at the clayey and sandy sites, respectively. On the other hand, plant residue application (7.5 Mg C ha?1 yr?1) significantly increased the surface soil carbon stocks, i.e., 3.5–3.8 and 1.7–2.1 Mg C ha?1 (soil depth 0–15 cm) at the clayey and sandy sites, respectively, while it also increased the annual CO2 fluxes substantially, i.e., 2.5–4.0 and 2.4–3.4 Mg C ha?1 yr?1 for the clayey and sandy soils, respectively. Our results indicate that these dry tropical croplands at least may act as a carbon sink, though the efficiency of carbon accumulation was substantially lower in sandy soil (6.8–8.4%) compared to clayey soil (14.0–15.2%), possibly owing to higher carbon loss by leaching and macro-faunal activity.  相似文献

To evaluate ecosystem response to changing atmospheric deposition, element budgets were established over the period from 1973 to 1991 for a Norway Spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) site. Budgets for Na+, Cl?, Ca2+, Mg2+, N, S and H+ were based on total deposition and seepage water fluxes. The deposition of Ca2+, Mg2+, particularly, of S and H+ decreased with time, while calculated N deposition remained constant at a high level. The decrease in Ca2+ deposition led to a reduction of Ca2+ fluxes with seepage water. The decrease of Mg2+ deposition did not have an effect on the output fluxes of Mg2+. The reversibility of soil and seepage water acidification by reduced S deposition was delayed by the release of previously accumulated soil SO 4 2? . The highest NO 3 ? fluxes were observed during the period of 1986 to 1988; NO 3 ? fluxes in general demonstrated a considerable annual and periodic variation. Total N accumulation in the ecosystem amounted to nearly 590 kg ha?1 yr?1 during the observation period. The major sink of N in the spruce site is the aggrading humus layer. The results emphasize the need for measurements over several years to make conclusions regarding the function of ecosystems in response to atmospheric deposition.  相似文献

Critical loads for N and S on Dutch forest ecosystems have been derived in relation to effects induced by eutrophication and acidification, such as changes in forest vegetation, nutrient imbalances, increased susceptibility to diseases, nitrate leaching, and Al toxicity. The criteria that have been used are N contents in needles, nitrate concentrations in groundwater (drinking water), and NH4/K ratios, Ca/Al ratios, and Al concentrations in the soil solution. Assuming an equal contribution of N and S, all effects seem to be prevented at a total deposition level below 600 molc ha?1 yr?1 due to N uptake by stemwood and acid neutralization by base cation weathering. The most serious effects will probably be prevented at total deposition levels between 1500 and 2000 molc ha?1 yr?1. The current average deposition in the Netherlands is 4900 molc ha?1 yr?1.  相似文献

From 1986–1989, a team of scientists measured atmospheric concentrations and fluxes in precipitation and throughfall, and modeled dry and cloudwater deposition in a spruce-fir forest of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park which is located in the Southern Appalachian Region of the United States. The work was part of the Integrated Forest Study (IFS) conducted at 12 forests in N. America and Europe. The spruce-fir forest at 1740 m consistently received the highest total deposition rates (~2200, 1200, and 700 eq ha?1 yr?1 for SO4 2?, NO3 ?, and NH4 +). During the summers of 1989 and 1990 we used multiple samplers to measure hydrologie, SO4 2?, and NO3 ? fluxes in rain and throughfall events beneath spruce forests above (1940 m) and below (1720 m) cloud base. Throughfall was used to estimate total deposition using relationships determined during the IFS. Although the SO4 2? fluxes increased with elevation by a factor of ~2 due to higher cloudwater interception at 1940 m, the NO3 ? fluxes decreased with elevation by ~30%. To investigate further, we began year round measurements of fluxes of all major ions in throughfall below spruce-fir forests at 1740 m and at 1920 m in 1993–1994. The fluxes of most ions showed a 10–50% increase with elevation due to the ~70 cm yr?1 cloudwater input at 1920 m. However, total inorganic nitrogen exhibited a 40% lower flux in throughfall at 1920 m than at 1740 m suggesting either higher dry deposition to trees at 1740 m or much higher canopy uptake of nitrogen by trees at 1920 m. Differential canopy absorption of N by trees at different elevations would have significant consequences for the use of throughfall N fluxes to estimate deposition. We used artificial trees to understand the foliar interactions of N.  相似文献

Net ecosystem exchange of carbon (FNEE) was estimated for a temperate broadleaf, evergreen eucalypt forest ecosystem at Tumbarumba in south-eastern Australia to investigate the processes controlling forest carbon sinks and their response to climate. Measurements at a range of temporal and spatial scales were used to make three different estimates of FNEE based on: (1) the difference between fluxes of carbon input by photosynthesis and output by autotrophic plus heterotrophic respiration, (2) changes over time in the carbon pools in the above- and below-ground biomass, soil and litter, and (3) micrometeorological flux measurements that provide a continuous estimate of the net exchange. A rigorous comparison of aggregated component fluxes and the net eddy fluxes within a flux tower source area was achieved based on an inventory of the site and a detailed sampling strategy. Measurements replicated in space and time provided mean values, confidence limits and patterns of variation of carbon pools and fluxes that allowed comparisons within known limits of uncertainty. As a result of comparisons between nighttime eddy flux and chamber measurements of respiration, a revised micrometeorological method was developed for estimating nighttime carbon flux using flux tower measurements. Uncertainty in the final estimate of FNEE was reduced through mutual constraints of each of these measurement approaches. FNEE for the period October 2001–September 2002, with average rainfall, was an uptake of 6.7 (5.1–8.3) tC ha?1 yr?1 estimated from component fluxes, and 5.4 (3.0–7.5) tC ha?1 yr?1 estimated from the revised eddy flux method. Biomass increment was 4.5 (3.7–5.4) tC ha?1 yr?1 and the remaining 0.9–2.2 tC ha?1 yr?1 could represent a carbon sink in the soil and litter pools or lie within the confidence limits of the measured fluxes. FNEE was reduced to ?0.1 to 2.4 tC ha?1 yr?1 during a period of drought and insect disturbance in October 2002–September 2003, with biomass increment being the main component reduced. The forest is a large carbon sink compared with other forest ecosystems, but this is subject to high-annual variability in response to climate variability and disturbance.  相似文献
