Silage made from Blanca white clover was offered ad libitum to four Friesian cows in a 12-week changeover experiment. The silage contained 990 g white clover DM (kg DM)−1 with 254 g DM kg−1 and 243 g CP (kg DM)−1 The pH was 3.98 and the in vitro DOMD concentration 680 g kg−1. The silage was the sole feed in the control treatment; in the other three treatments it was supplemented with barley, soybean meal, and a mixture of these feeds supplying 8.1, 2.7 and 7.8 kg DM per cow respectively. The daily intakes of silage DM were 19.3, 13.5, 17.5 and 13.5 kg per cow, and the daily milk yields were 26.3, 28.0, 28.6 and 27.6 kg per cow on the control, barley, soybean and barley plus soybean treatments respectively. It is concluded that the white clover silage had an excellent fermentation and a large potential for milk production.  相似文献

Herbage characteristics were monitored over 3 years (1985–1987) in three perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) varieties as grass/only (200 kg N ha−1) and grass/clover ( Trifolium repens L.) (75 kg N ha−1) swards when continuously stocked with sheep. Although mean total annual herbage production was similar from the grass varieties, growth of Aurora, a very early-flowering variety, was higher than that of Aberystwyth S23 and Meltra (tetraploid) late-flowering types in spring. Herbage production from grass-only swards was 15% higher than from grass/clover swards.
In vitro organic matter digestibility (OMD) of Aurora and Meltra was 34 g kg −1 and 26 g kg −1 higher ( P < 0·01) than that of S23. Averaged over varieties, the OMD of grass/clover was 25 g kg −1 higher ( P < 0·05) than grass-only during the post-weaning period. Individual lamb digestible organic matter intake (DOMI) was 22% higher ( P < 0·05) on grass/clover than on grass-only during this period. Water-soluble carbohydrates content of Aurora was 42% higher ( P < 0·001) than that of both Meltra and S23.
Herbage characteristics were related to lamb performance reported previously. Lamb production was positively correlated with DOMI. However, the magnitude of differences in lamb performance between treatments was much greater than the extent of differences detected in herbage characteristics.  相似文献

The effect of applying 100kg P ha-1 per year in the form of triple superphosphate to mixed swards of perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ) and white clover ( Trifolium repens ) was examined on a soil of low P status.
The dry matter yield of total herbage was increased by 10'/i by added P. In the year of sowing the ryegrass benefited more than the clover from added P: in the subsequent four years the two species benefited equally. Both species responded 10 added P to a similar extent in terms of leaf size; the clover responded less well than the ryegrass in terms of rate of leaf emergence. However, clover responded positively to added P in terms of stolon internode length, length of stolon per m2 and number of growing points per m2. It is suggested that the application of P may promote the spread of white clover within an open sward, but that its application may not enhance the competitive power of white clover when growing with vigorous grasses.  相似文献

The effects of spatial location of white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) within a perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.)/white clover pasture on stolon and petiole extension were investigated in two experiments, where patch size containing white clover (0·5 m, 1·5 m and 4 m diameter), location within the patch (inside and edge) and cutting height (4 cm and 8 cm) were varied. Stolon extension rate was greater on the edge of a patch (12·1 mm week−1) than inside the patch (7·2 mm week−1). Patch size affected both stolon and petiole extension rate, which were both greater in small and medium-sized than in large patches. It is suggested that the fastest spread of white clover in patchy sward environments should occur from small patches, which could double in diameter during a growing season. Manipulating the heights of vegetation within and outside large patches affected light quality (red-far red; R/FR) at ground level, which was greater under shorter than taller swards and greater under the canopy of the grass matrix than the grass/white clover patch. However, the height differences between adjacent vegetation had little effect on stolon or petiole growth. In May only, stolon extension at the patch boundary was greatest when both patches and the grass matrix had a height of 8 cm.  相似文献

In three separate feeding experiments using a total of twenty-six individually-housed Ayrshire cows, three wilted silages made from Blanca white clover were offered ad libitum with either different supplements or different proportions of grass silage. The clover silages contained 680 g white clover kg−1 on a DM basis, and had a mean DM concentration of 263 g kg−1 with 231 g CP kg−1 DM and 91 g ammonia-N kg−1 N. The pH values averaged 4·16 and the DOMD concentrations 611 g kg−1. In experiment 1 the daily intake of clover silage given alone was 15.2 kg DM per cow, i.e. 30·1 g kg−1 live weight, and decreased by 0·76 kg DM kg−1 barley DM and by 0·66 kg DM kg−1barley plus soybean meal DM when these feeds were offered as supplements. Milk yield and fat concentration were higher on the supplement treatments than on the clover silage-only treatment. In experiments 2 and 3 the intakes of silage and total DM increased as the weight of clover in the diet increased from 0 to 700 g kg−1 with parallel increases in milk yield. The effects on milk composition were small and generally non-significant. Although white clover silages with excellent fermentations were made, it is concluded that the main role of white clover in a silage system will be in mixed swards with grass to reduce the input of fertilizer N and to increase the voluntary intake of silage.  相似文献

Applications of N fertilizer (0.40, 80, 120 and 240 kg N ha−1 year−1 in dressings of 40 or 80 kg N ha−1) were made to a perennial ryegrass/white clover ( Lolium perenne L. Trifolium repens L.) pasture growing on a humus iron podzol reclaimed from heather ( Calluna vulgaris L.) moor in 1982 and 1983. Where no N was applied, estimates of Ni fixation and mineralization were almost equal, being approximately 50 kg N ha−1 year−1 from each source. Apparent efficiencies of fertilizer use were generally low; for each dressing they ranged between –0·7 and 25·5 kg dry matter (DM)kgN−1. Also, responses to N fertilizer were affected by previous dressings. The net N recovery in harvested herbage from application of 120 kg N ha−1 year−1 was 30 kg N ha−1 year−1.  相似文献

White clover varieties, potentially suitable for inclusion in seed mixtures for mixed stock-rearing farm systems, were evaluated when growing with S23 perennial ryegrass under rotational sheep grazing with a silage cut in late May or early June, as practiced on farms. Monoculture grass swards were also included to enable the direct and indirect contribution of white clover to total sward production to be evaluated.
White clover increased total sward production during all three years of the trial by an average of 50%. Although clover content of swards were similar, large differences occurred in their grass content, especially in the third year, when difference in total yields of swards based on large–leaved clover varieties was 2 t ha −1 while difference in clover yield was only 0-6 to ha–1 The indirect contribution of white clover, namely the extra grass resulting from N transfer, was greater in the spring than in the autumn. It was also greater for Nesta than for other varieties. and exceptional for this variety in that the increase in grass yield above that of grass monoculture was maintained over three harvest years.  相似文献

Four legumes—white clover cv. Blanca, red clover cvs Violetta (diploid) and Hungaropoly (tetraploid) and lucerne cv. Europe—were established as pure-sown swards and with each of five companion grasses: timothy cv. Timo, meadow fescue cv. Bundy, sweet brome cv. Deborah and perennial ryegrass cvs Talbot (diploid) and Barlatra (tetraploid), both ryegrasses being of 'intermediate' heading date. Two 'silage' crops and an 'aftermath grazing' crop were harvested in each of three successive years.
In the first harvest year, total herbage DM production of red clover ranged from 15·03 to 17·01 t ha-1. White clover and lucerne swards produced considerably less at 7·12 to 11·01 t ha-1. In the second harvest year, lucerne swards were the highest producing at 15·54 to 17·14 t ha-1, while DM production from red clover and white clover swards ranged from 6·75 to 11·87 t ha-1. Lucerne swards maintained their production superiority in the third year at 16·48 to 17·87 t ha-1, while production from white clover swards ranged from 6·41 to 10·23 t ha-1. However, red clover swards declined to 3·30 to 5·81 t ha -1; this above-average decline was mainly caused by the onset of red clover necrotic mosaic virus which affected all red clover plots uniformly in the second harvest year, and by winter conditions before the third harvest year. Total herbage DOM and CP yields of the swards were influenced in a similar manner to DM production.  相似文献

Assessments were made of the clover yield and clover content between early June and late July 1984 of white clover in a permanent pasture which had been slot-seeded in spring 1982.
Past reserves of phosphate or application of propyzamide alone only slightly increased clover dry matter yield but together they increased it from 13 to 785 kg dry matter ha-1 and gave 31% clover in the total herbage yield. Applications of P2O5 during the experiment, alone or together with past reserves of phosphate, Iased clover yield from 13 to 242 kg dry matter ha-1 and the proportion of clover from 1 to 10%. However, highest yields (1282 kg) and clover content (37%) were attained when P2O5 and propyzamide were applied to treatments with past reserves of phosphate.
These results confirmed the trends evident during the second year and also indicated a potential role for grass-suppressants in increasing management options during the early years after slot-seeding.  相似文献

Herbage characteristics were studied over years 4–6 (1988–90) in three perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.) varieties as grass-only (200 kg N ha-1) and grass/clover ( Trifolium repens L.) swards which received 75kg N ha-1 in 1988 and 0kg N ha-1 in 1989 and 1990 when continuously stocked with sheep. Mean total annual herbage production of Aurora, a very early flowering variety, was 11% more than that of late-flowering Aberystwyth S23 due to 21% higher growth as grass/clover pasture. The grass/clover sward of Meltra, a tetraploid late-flowering variety, out-yielded S23/clover by 17%. Herbage production of grass/clover was 86% of that of grass only in 1988 but only 54% of the grass-only swards averaged for 1989 and 1990.
In vitro organic matter digestibility (OMD) of Meltra was 38g kg-1 OM and 27g kg-1 OM higher than that of S23 and Aurora respectively. OMD of grass/clover was 15g kg-1 OM higher than that of grass only during the post-weaning period. Herbage intake was positively correlated with OMD of herbage.
The herbage attributes were related to lamb performance reported previously. Lamb output was positively correlated with intake of digestible organic matter.
Differences between the three varieties in herbage characteristics were greater as grass/clover than as grass-only swards, reflecting their compatibility with white clover. In this respect Meltra was the best and S23 the poorest variety.  相似文献

Changes in the crude protein (CP) concentration of white clover and perennial ryegrass herbage from a mixed sward were determined on six sampling dates from May to October in each of 2 years. The swards were grown without fertilizer N in an organic farming system and continuously grazed by dairy cows during the grazing season. The annual mean contents of white clover in the dry matter (DM) of the sward were 272·3 and 307·0 g kg−1 in Years 1 and 2. The mean CP concentrations of the white clover and perennial ryegrass herbage were 251·6 and 151·9 g kg−1 DM in Year 1 and 271·9 and 174·0 g kg−1 DM in Year 2 respectively. The CP concentration of the white clover increased significantly during the grazing season from 220·0 to 284·1 g kg−1 DM in Year 1 and from 269·0 to 315·5 g kg−1 DM in Year 2. In the perennial ryegrass herbage the CP concentration increased from 112·2 to 172·6 g kg−1 DM in Year 1 and from 142·7 to 239·5 g kg−1 DM in Year 2. The rate of increase during the season in the CP concentration of the perennial ryegrass herbage was similar to the rate of increase recorded in the white clover herbage.  相似文献

The fermentation characteristics and chemical composition of 57 first-cut and 30 second-cut samples of grass silages, made in bunker silos on commercial dairy farms in Wales in 1990, and treated with a nominal 61 t−1 of an acid salt-type additive at ensilage, is described. Typical chemical composition of grass cut for ensilage was 156 g kg−1 dry matter (DM) and 28 g kg−1 water soluble carbohydrate (WSC), with 181 g (kg DM) −1 crude protein (CP) and 232 g (kg DM) −1 modified acid detergent fibre (MADF). The effect of additive use was to produce silages with DM 230 g kg−1 pH 3·93, ammonia N 70 g kg−1 total N, with residual WSC 35 g (kg DM) −1, lactic acid 83 g (kg DM) −1, total acids 118 g (kg DM) −1 and butyric acid 0·7 g (kg DM) −1. No significant differences were found between first- and second-cut silages. Silage fermentation was restricted (i.e. lactic acid less than 60 g kg DM−1) in only 20% of the samples.
It is suggested that on commercial farms the application rate achieved may be insufficient to produce a restricted fermentation.  相似文献

Four varieties of white clover (small-leaved cv. Aberystwyth S184. medium-leaved cv. Grasslands Huia and large-leaved cvs Linda and Olwen) were sown at 3 kg ha-1 together with 10 kg ha-1 perennial ryegrass cv. Talbot. Herbage productivity was measured for three harvest years, 1979-81, over four annual rates of fertilizer N (0,120,240 and 360 kg ha-1) and two closeness of cutting treatments (80 and 40 mm from ground level). A simulated grazing regime of six cuts per year at 3- to 6-week intervals was used.
Production of total herbage DM was increased by increasing N rate; mean annual DM production ranged from 783 1 ha-1 with no N to 11701 ha-1 at 360 kg ha-1 N. Mean herbage response to N (kg DM per kg N applied) was 73,90 and 108 for the three successive N increments relative to no N. Mean white clover DM production was reduced from 4 14t ha-1 with no N to 051 t ha-1 at 360 kg ha-1 N.
The large-leaved clover varieties were more productive than the small- or medium-leaved varieties at all N rates. Close cutting increased total herbage and white clover by a mean annual 16% and 31%. respectively. White clover varieties did not interact with either N rate or closeness of cutting.
It is concluded that repetitive N application over the growing season is incompatible with white clover persistence and production, even with large-leaved clover varieties or with close cutting, two factors which improved clover performance in the experimental swards.  相似文献

This experiment was carried out to study the responses of sward components (particularly white clover, Trifolium repens ) to grazing management in a natural sward dominated by smooth-stalked meadowgrass ( Poa pratensis ) syn. Kentucky bluegrass. Treatments during two grazing seasons (1989–90) were: cattle grazing alone (C); cattle grazing followed by topping (CT); cattle grazing followed by sheep grazing (CS); and sheep grazing alone (S). Mean target pre- and post-grazing herbage masses were 2200 and 1100 kg DM ha−1, estimated by single-probe electronic capacitance meter. Sward component dynamics were monitored using turf dissections, marked white clover stolons, and ring-toss white clover leaf counts. Component and sward data for the C, CT, CS and S treatments respectively, were: number of white clover leaves m−2, 1295, 1384, 1408, 900 (s.e. ± 108); number of leaves per growing point, 3·2, 3·4, 3·0, 2·8 (s.e. ± 0·2); herbage accumulation (t DM ha−1), 5·16, 5·02, 5·87, 8·28 (s.e. ±0 08); rejected herbage (% pasture area) 39·7, 7·7, 16·0, 0 (s.e. ± 75); and annual net herbage production (t DM ha−1) 3·39, 4·35, 4·99, 8·28 (s.e. ± 0.07). Swards grazed by sheep alone contained less white clover, but regrew quicker and produced more herbage than other treatments. Close topping or grazing by sheep following dairy cattle grazing decreased sward rejection by cattle. These treatments maintained more of the pasture in better condition for subsequent cattle grazing, resulting in greater net herbage production than where no post-cattle grazing treatment was used.  相似文献

Diversity of clovers in grass-clover swards may contribute to greater herbage yields and stability of yield. This possible effect was evaluated in an experiment carried out over three harvest years at two contrasting sites, differing in precipitation and soil composition, using mixed swards containing either one, two or three clover species sown together with timothy ( Phleum pratense L.) and meadow fescue ( Festuca pratensis L.). The clover species were red clover ( Trifolium pratense L.), white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) and alsike clover ( Trifolium hybridum L.) sown in various proportions in a total of ten treatments. All swards were fertilized with nitrogen with amounts that increased from year to year, and three harvests were taken in three consecutive years. There was a significant interaction between site and species mixture on total dry matter (DM) yields (range 27–32 tonnes ha−1) and DM yields of clovers (range 5–15 tonnes ha−1); red clover as a single species or in a mixture was superior at the dry site while multi-clover species mixtures were superior at the wet site. Alsike clover was the least productive species of clover. Stability of yield of clovers was generally higher by including white and red clover in the seed mixture but total DM yield was not.  相似文献

An experiment was carried out in 1992 and 1993 to examine the effect of white clover content of perennial ryegrass/white clover swards on the performance of Limousin × Friesian heifers. Swards with low (L), medium (M) and high (H) white clover contents were established and managed by continuous variable stocking. A compressed sward height of 5·5 cm was maintained using a buffer fence to vary plot areas, with herbage surplus to grazing requirements cut, removed and yields measured. The mean white clover proportions for treatments L, M and H were 0·02, 0·19 and 0·18 in 1992 and 0·13, 0·16 and 0·31 in 1993 respectively. White clover contents of the swards reached a maximum in August and September, and differences between treatments diminished. There was no significant difference between treatments in the content of white clover in the swards in autumn 1993.
Liveweight gains of heifers increased asymptotically with increasing white clover content of the sward. Below a white clover herbage mass of 300 kg DM ha–1, there was little effect on liveweight gain, which was 0·70 kg day–1 over the grazing season. Between 400 and 450 kg DM ha–1 white clover, liveweight gains were 0·85–0·90 kg day–1. While clover content of the sward did not significantly affect utilized metabolizable energy output; the mean output over the grazing season in the two years from liveweight gain and herbage yield was 78 GJ ha–1. It is suggested that, using this grazing system, white clover reached an equilibrium with a mean herbage mass of about 400 kg DM ha–1 over the grazing season.  相似文献

The effects of stocking rate and N fertilizer on a mixed sward of perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne) and white clover ( Trifolium repens ) set-stocked with sheep were examined. Sward production and composition, and sheep production were studied.
Increasing the stocking rate over the range 25–55 yearling sheep ha−1 reduced herbage accumulation by about 40%, whether or not N fertilizer was applied. Increasing the stocking rate increased the density of ryegrass tillers, but reduced the density of clover stolons and the clover content of the swards. Applications of N fertilizer (200 kg N ha−1 a−1) increased herbage accumulation by about 20% but substantially reduced the clover content.
Liveweight gain per animal and per unit area were greater at the lower stocking rates where the clover content and nutritive value of the diet were greatest. Wool growth per unit area was greater at the higher stocking rates. Applications of 1M fertilizer increased liveweight gain at stocking rates above 25 sheep ha−1, but had no effect on wool production at any stocking rate.
The results demonstrate that a stable and productive grass-clover association was maintained under conditions of set-stocking at around 23 yearling sheep ha−1and that at this stocking rate, which appears to be about the biological optimum, there was no advantage in using N fertilizer.  相似文献

In a two-year experiment, three silages were prepared from herbage treated either with an inoculant at 1·25 × 105 organisms (g fresh material (FM))−1. formic acid (850 g kg−1) at 4 1 (t FM)−1, or no additive (untreated). In Experiment 1, unwilted and in Experiment 2, wilted silages were investigated and had mean dry matter (DM) and water soluble carbohydrate (WSC) concentrations at ensiling of 171 g kg−1 and 17·6 g (kg FM)−1 and 263 g kg−1 and 25·1 g (kg FM)−1, respectively. In Experiment 1, 45 and in Experiment 2, 54 individually fed cows were used to evaluate the silages in three-treatment, randomized-block design experiments. During weeks 4-12 of lactation the cows were offered silages ad libitum and during weeks 15-26 a constant amount of silage was fed. There were few major differences in chemical composition of the resulting silages. Formic acid had no effect on silage digestibility. Inoculant treatment increased digestibility when the grass had been wilted. The use of formic acid resulted in increased silage DM intake of 9% during weeks 4-12 of lactation in Experiment 1 but not in Experiment 2. The inoculant gave no increase in silage DM intake over the control in Experiment 1 but increased silage DM intake by 7% in Experiment 2. There was no significant response in milk yield to formic acid. In Experiment 2 the response in milk yield to inoculant treatment was significant both in weeks 4-12 of lactation (4%) and in weeks 15-26 of lactation (5%). It is concluded that the response in milk yield to the use of a specific inoculant appears to be mediated through increased intake of metabolizable energy (ME).  相似文献

This paper reports the effects of onset of phenological maturity on the nutritive value of white clover ( Trifolium repens L.). The study comprised (i) examination of an extensive data set on nutritive value and (ii) investigation of the constituents of nutritive value, in vivo feeding value, protein degradability and metabolizable protein content of white clover harvested at three stages of maturity (early-flowering, full-flowering, ripe seed stages) during the primary growth phase in spring in Australia. The data set on nutritive value showed a consistent pattern of high nutritive value during cool season months, progressive decline through spring and uniformly lower nutritive value over summer. Results from laboratory determinations, in sacco degradability studies and a digestibility trial on white clover harvested at early-flowering, full-flowering and ripe seed stages were consistent with results from the data set on nutritive value. Onset of maturity during the primary growth phase in spring was accompanied by large changes in nutritive value: neutral-detergent fibre (NDF) increased from 184 to 301 g kg−1 dry matter (DM), nitrogen (N) declined from 36 to 20 g kg−1 DM, in vitro digestibility declined from 0·74 to 0·65 and metabolizable protein content declined from 144 to 67 g kg−1 DM from early-flowering to ripe seed stage. These nutritive value changes were accompanied by a decline of in vivo digestibility at the rate of 0·0032 d−1 and an 0·2 reduction in voluntary intake.  相似文献

A field experiment with mixed swards of perennial ryegrass and while clover carded out in 1982–83 using small cut plots is described. With perennial ryegrass, lime slightly decreased annual dry matter (DM) production in 1982 (the sowing year) but increased it in 1983 (the first harvest year) by about 1 t ha-1. Applications of N and P produced small increases in DM in 1982 and greater increases in 1983. In the latter season annual DM production varied from an average of 3·5 to about 10 t ha-1 with 0 or 480 kg N ha-1 applied in three equal-sized dressings throughout the growing season. Application of 40 kg P ha-1 in 1982 increased DM production by about 2·5 t ha-1 in 1983 but higher rates had little effect. Fifteen mg extractable P kg-1 soil seemed sufficient to support levels of production normally expected from ryegrass pastures in upland Scotland, Applications of K did not affect DM production. N increased tiller weight and sward height of ryegrass; lime and P tended to increase tiller weight but this effect was not statistically significant. Leaf appearance and tiller number were not affected by treatments.
The white clover content of the pasture was decreased 10-fold by application of N and increased by lime and P (1·45 and 1·46-fold. respectively). The DM response to P was most apparent in limed soil and was also affected by the siting of the plots in the experimental area. Effects of lime and P on growth of white clover were to increase the number of stolon growing points and root nodule numbers per unit area.
The results emphasize the importance of lime and P fertilizer for establishment and growth of pasture in this soil and the differences between white clover and ryegrass in their responses to these.  相似文献
