The effect of an ivermectin sustained-release bolus (I-SRB) on the epidemiology of nematode parasites and on calf productivity was evaluated in a field trial under Northwestern European conditions. Twenty parasite-naive female Friesian calves (principals) aged 5–9 months were used together with six male Friesian tracer calves. Principal calves were allocated by restricted randomization on day 0 body weight to either an untreated control group or a group given one I-SRB, designed to deliver 12 mg ivermectin per day for 135 days, orally on day 0. Each group was grazed on adjacent paddocks, naturally contaminated with parasitic nematode larvae, from 13 May 1991 (day 0) until housing on 30 September (day 140). Body weights of principal calves were recorded and individual blood and faecal samples taken at regular intervals throughout the trial. Pasture nematode contamination was monitored by larval counts on herbage and by worm counts of tracer calves grazed on each paddock from day 126 to day 140. Nematode contamination levels on the control paddock did not rise until the end of the grazing season, as a result of a mid-summer drought period. The period of exposure to a high larval challenge was too short to provoke body weight losses and clinical parasitic gastroenteritis in control calves. Use of the I-SRB resulted in zero faecal egg counts of trichostrongyles during the whole pasture season, thereby preventing a build-up of parasitic gastrointestinal nematodes on pasture. During the second grazing season no signs of parasitic gastroenteritis were detected in any animal, but an outbreak of parasitic bronchitis (PB) was observed in both experimental groups, indicating that PB can occur in older cattle regardless of the control measures taken to prevent clinical parasitism during the first grazing season.  相似文献

The efficacy of using a bolus containing morantel in a sustained-release preparation for controlling naturally acquired gastrointestinal parasitic infections in weaned calves and yearling cattle was investigated during the 1982 grazing season at selected sites in the United States and Canada. According to a common trial design under various climatic and management conditions, 10 field trials were conducted with the bolus. At the time of spring turnout, a bolus was administered to each calf or yearling in the treated group. Then, treated and control cattle grazed separate but equal areas of divided pasture(s). The epidemiologic pattern of parasitic gastroenteritis in control animals and the effect of treatment on this pattern was determined in each trial. Safety and practicality of use of the bolus also were established. When compared with untreated cattle (control), those given the bolus deposited significantly (P less than 0.05) fewer worm eggs (89% reduction) during the first 90 days of the grazing season, as well as significantly fewer (P less than 0.05) worm eggs (84% reduction) during the entire grazing season. Consequently, during the second half of the grazing season, larval populations on treated pastures remained significantly (P less than 0.05) lower (66% reduction), compared with numbers of larvae found on control pastures. For pastures grazed by treated and control cattle at trial initiation, mean worm counts recovered from tracer calves were equal, indicating comparable pasture contamination at the beginning of the grazing season.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A novel intraruminal bolus developed for the sustained delivery of the anthelmintic morantel tartrate was evaluated in the seasonal control of parasitic gastroenteritis in first season grazing calves. The morantel sustained release trilaminate is a trilaminate sheet consisting of a central lamina of a morantel tartrate/ethylene vinyl acetate matrix coated on both sides with a thin impermeable layer of ethylene vinyl acetate. A symmetrical pattern of circular perforations punched through the device controls the release of morantel. Administration of the trilaminate to calves significantly reduced their faecal egg output compared with untreated controls and thus reduced pasture larval contamination. Clinical parasitic gastroenteritis was prevented in the treated calves and there were significant reductions in their worm burdens compared with the untreated control calves both during and at the end of the grazing season. The control of parasitic gastroenteritis resulted in a significantly greater (P less than 0.0001) weight gain, of 45 kg, by the treated calves.  相似文献

The effect of strategic treatments with ivermectin in first-season calves exposed to trichostrongyle nematodes on naturally contaminated pasture was studied. Twenty first season heifer calves were divided into 2 groups, according to live weight, and on 22nd May each group was turned out onto a 1 hectare pasture. Group A (Plot A) was treated with ivermectin at weeks 3, 8 and 13 after turn out, while group B (Plot B) served as an untreated control group. The study showed that control calves exhibited increase in trichostrongyle egg counts in August, while treated calves were excreting low numbers of trichostrongyle eggs. Pasture larval counts on Plot B (control animals) were low during the first part of the grazing season, followed by a steep rise towards the end of July. In contrast, the numbers of infective larvae recovered from Plot A remained low throughout the season. Both groups showed comparable weight gains from May up to the middle of July. However, from then on, Group B (controls) had lower weight gains than ivermectin treated Group A. From the end of July onwards, most untreated calves (Group B) showed clinical signs of parasitic gastroenteritis. It can be concluded that the strategical ivermectin treatments were successful, and faecal egg counts, pepsinogen levels and herbage larval counts clearly demonstrated that this was accomplished through suppression of pasture contamination with nematode eggs and subsequent reduction of pasture infectivity.  相似文献

The efficacy of the morantel sustained release bolus in controlling gastrointestinal and lungworm parasites when used in first-season grazing animals which followed older animals onto spring pasture (deprime system) was assessed in three trials conducted in Normandy, France. In each trial first-season grazing calves were equally allocated onto two separate but equivalent paddocks where they remained throughout the grazing season. A morantel sustained release bolus was administered to one group of animals at turnout, the other group remained as controls. The effect of the treatment on contamination of pasture (herbage larval counts and tracer worm counts), on faecal worm egg and lungworm larval counts, and on weight gain performance of the principal animals was assessed. In all three trials, worm egg output in the bolus-treated animals was substantially lower throughout the season compared with the control animals. Worm burdens of tracer calves grazing pastures of the treated cattle were also reduced compared with tracer calves grazing control pastures. Clinical parasitic gastroenteritis occurred in the control animals but not in the bolus-treated animals in one trial. Overall the bolus-treated animals outperformed the controls by a mean weight gain advantage of 10.5 kg (P less than 0.01).  相似文献

The morantel sustained release bolus was administered at turnout to first-season grazing calves in order to assess its efficacy in the seasonal control of infection by nematode parasites in Ireland. The pastures grazed by control calves showed a marked increase in gastrointestinal trichostrongylid infective larvae by September, while numbers of infective larvae on pasture grazed by bolus-treated calves remained at a low level throughout the grazing season. In consequence, the controls showed significantly higher worm egg counts in late season and significantly higher worm burdens (mainly Ostertagia spp) at necropsy carried out in November on representative number of principal animals selected from each group. These reduced worm burdens were attributed to the suppression of egg output during the early part of the season as a result of treatment with the morantel sustained release bolus at turnout in the spring. Pasture contamination with Dictyocaulus viviparus larvae was present on all treatment pastures. The bolus-treated calves however were subjected to an increase in D. viviparus infection which occurred on their pasture in late season after the active life of the bolus had expired. It was concluded that bolus treatment delayed (rather than prevented) the buildup of D. viviparus infection on the pasture by 60-90 days.  相似文献

A five year ley pasture was used as a source of natural infection with Dictyocaulus viviparus for cattle in anthelmintic trials. Pasture larval counts, faecal larval counts of permanently grazing calves and lungworm burdens harboured by tracer calves were monitored in three grazing seasons to assess the pattern of infection. Carrier calves were introduced at the beginning of the grazing season in the first two years of the study but not in the third. In the fourth year the pasture was subdivided into two paddocks where overwintered infection with and without carrier infection were compared. A control paddock exposed to carrier infection but no overwintered infection was also monitored. Pasture larvae survived the winter but carrier infection appeared to make a larger contribution to pasture larval counts and the onset of parasitic bronchitis in susceptible calves. In the absence of grazing cattle at the end of the grazing season the concentration of D viviparus larvae on the herbage fell rapidly to undetectable levels. Discrepancies between contamination of herbage by infective D viviparus larvae and infectivity of pasture for susceptible cattle occurred in all years but were particularly marked on the third year when natural immunity appeared to influence the number of lungworms accumulating in tracer calves. Failure to recover lung worms from tracer calves cannot be regarded as an accurate indication of lungworm free pasture. In the first three years the proportion of the lungworm population which was inhibited in tracer calves was higher early and late in the grazing season and negligible in mid season. This suggests that a predisposition to inhibition in larvae which have overwintered on pasture may influence the time of onset of parasitic bronchitis in the next grazing season, but results from the fourth year did not support this hypothesis.  相似文献

The effectiveness of albendazole in a controlled-release bolus in controlling gastrointestinal nematodes in lambs was assessed during the summer of 1986. Faecal egg counts were almost entirely negative throughout in the treated group and larval challenge remained low at below 2000 larvae kg-1. Untreated control lambs showed a characteristic pattern of auto-infection, culminating in a peak pasture larval count of over 70,000 larvae kg-1 and an outbreak of parasitic gastroenteritis in September associated with a serum pepsinogen concentration of 1.183 IU tyrosine and a mean worm burden of 91,165 nematodes at necropsy, including Ostertagia, Trichostrongylus and Nematodirus species. Subject to the restrictions imposed by the size of the bolus, this was considered to be a highly effective method of seasonal parasite control.  相似文献

The direct and indirect anthelmintic efficacies of the morantel sustained-release bolus given to calves were assessed in a 154-day controlled field trial. A permanent calf pasture (divided into 2 lots) and naturally parasitized calves were used. The medicated calves were given the bolus at the time they were placed on the pastures. Control calves did not receive anthelmintic therapy. The effectiveness of the bolus to control parasitic gastroenteritis was determined by monitoring various parasitologic determinants. The treated calves had significantly (P less than 0.01) reduced numbers of fecal nematode eggs for every posttreatment sampling period when compared with the control calves. Tracer calves, used periodically during the study to indicate pasture larval infectivities, had equivalent worm burdens at the beginning of the trial (treated vs control pasture). Tracer calves, added later in the study to the lot with treated calves, harbored 83% to 94% fewer nematodes than did their counterparts in the lot with the controls. Plasma pepsinogen concentrations, reflective of abomasal worm burden size and/or activity, were significantly higher (P less than 0.01) in the control than in the treated calves from day 54 until trial termination. At trial termination, the treated calves weighed an average of 27.8 kg more and harbored 80.9% fewer nematodes than the control calves. The morantel sustained-release bolus is an anthelmintic delivery device that has therapeutic and prophylactic antinematode activities. To achieve its optimum performance, the bolus must be used so that the epizootiologic patterns of the predominate parasitic nematodes are effectively disrupted. Between 1999 and 2003 studies were done at Utrecht University on the population dynamics of gastrointestinal nematodes and the potential to use evasive grazing for the control of nematode infections in small ruminants. On most pastures grazed in May and June it took at least 3 weeks before high pasture infectivity levels for Haemonchus contortus developed while it took at least 2 weeks on pastures grazed in July, August and September. Occasionally, larvae emerged earlier on pasture when high temperatures coincided with rain. Pasture infectivity levels for H. contortus subsequently increased and the highest levels were found between 5 and 9 weeks on pastures grazed in May-June and between 3 and 9 weeks on pastures grazed in July, August and September. Pasture infectivity usually had decreased again to low levels after approximately 3 months. Larvae of the other trichostrongylids emerged later on pasture. However, patterns of Teladorsagia circumcincta, Trichostrongylus spp. and Cooperia curticei were basically similar to H. contortus. Strongyloides papillosus larvae emerge within 2 weeks on pasture and survival is short. On the other hand Nematodirus larvae took a lot longer to emerge on pasture than the other trichostrongylids. The results imply that only on a small proportion of farms (mixed dairy cattle/sheep farms; some organic dairy goat farms) evasive grazing can be recommended as only control measure for parasitic gastroenteritis. However, the present data offer possibilities to combine evasive grazing with other methods in an integrated control scheme.  相似文献

The field application of an intraruminal bolus designed to release morantel tartrate continuously for a period of about 60 days after oral administration to grazing calves just prior to turnout onto spring pasture has been tested. The study involved five separate field trials with a common trial design conducted in 1978 on farms in Eastern and South Eastern England.The Morantel Sustained Release Bolus (MSRB) treated calves showed statistically significant weight gain advantages over their contemporary controls at the end of the grazing season on all sites. Advantages varied from 13.4 to 36.5 kg. Overall 109 treated calves gained an average of 24.5 kg more than controls. Outbreaks of clinical parasitic gastroenteritis occurred in the latter part of the grazing season on three sites. Altogether, there were twenty eight cases requiring therapeutic treatment in controls but none in the MSRB treated calves.Parasitology data show that the disease prevention and improved performance were due to the MSRB preventing the mid-summer rise in pasture larval contamination, which was evident in all five sites, and thus eliminating the detrimental effect of high parasite challenge in the latter part of the grazing season.  相似文献

Two experiments were done to evaluate the effectiveness of a slow-release, morantel tartrate, anthelmintic bolus for controlling parasitic gastroenteritis in replacement dairy heifers. In experiment 1, good control of nematode contamination of pasture was indicated by lower worm burdens in tracer calves that grazed with 15 heifers treated orally with a single bolus and by significantly decreased numbers of nematode eggs in the feces of the 15 treated heifers, as compared with numbers of eggs in the feces of 15 nontreated control calves. Significant differences in weight gain were not seen between treated and nontreated heifers, probably due to low amounts of larval exposure, the small number of heifers evaluated, and parasitic resistance in the heifers, which may have developed as a result of prestudy exposure to contaminated pasture. In experiment 2, done 1 year after the 1st experiment, using the same pastures that were used in experiment 1, young heifers were used. Many of the heifers were parasite naive at the beginning of the experiment (ie, nematode eggs were not found before the experiment). Treatment with the bolus was effective in controlling parasitic gastroenteritis in the heifers and in controlling nematode contamination of pasture. Compared with nontreated heifers, treated heifers had significantly higher cumulative weight gains, a significant decrease in plasma pepsinogen concentrations, and a significant decrease in worm egg excretion. The number of worms acquired by tracer calves that were grazed with treated heifers was significantly less than for tracer calves that were grazed with nontreated heifers.  相似文献

The efficacy of the oxfendazole pulse release bolus system for the control of parasitic gastroenteritis and parasitic bronchitis in first-season grazing calves was evaluated in Belgium. Twenty-two calves were allocated to two groups. The calves in one group received a bolus at the time of turn out, while the other group remained untreated. The efficacy of the bolus was assessed by comparison of faecal worm egg counts, plasma pepsinogen concentrations, the antibody response to Ostertagia, Cooperia and Dictyocaulus species total plasma protein and albumin concentrations, and weight gains throughout the grazing season and the housing period. The oxfendazole pulse release bolus provided good control of parasitic gastroenteritis dominated by ostertagia. The effects of parasitic gastritis were greatly reduced as shown by the significantly lower values of serum pepsinogen and ostertagia antibody titres. The use of the bolus further reduced the adverse effects of parasitism as indicated by better liveweight gains and normal total plasma protein and albumin concentrations whereas in the untreated control group hypoproteinaemia and hypoalbuminaemia were observed. Most animals exhibited clinical signs of parasitic bronchitis at the end of the grazing season, and the bolus may not adequately control parasitic bronchitis in all cases at all times.  相似文献

The effect of ivermectin delivered from a sustained-release bolus (I-SRB) on the weight gain of beef cattle through a grazing season was evaluated using 20 yearling beef steer calves randomly divided into two groups of ten animals each. Calves in the control group each received a placebo bolus, while those in the treatment group each received an I-SRB designed to release 12 mg ivermectin day-1 for approximately 90 days. All animals were weighted and samples of feces were collected from the rectum at monthly intervals, beginning on Day 0, until trial termination (Day 148). Pasture larval counts were also conducted on herbage collected on each sampling date. On Day 119, two control and two treated calves were removed from pasture, housed in isolation for 3 weeks, then necropsied for recovery of gastrointestinal nematodes. Three sets of parasite-naive tracer calves were utilized to evaluate the initial, interim and final levels of pasture contamination by nematode larvae. A fourth set was used to evaluate the level of pasture contamination the following spring. The use of the I-SRB resulted in a greater than 99% reduction in fecal egg counts of trichostrongyles and numbers of gastrointestinal nematodes in the treated principals, as well as an average daily gain advantage of 0.114 kg over the 148 day period. A 67-98% reduction in pasture larval nematode contamination occurred on pastures grazed by the treated animals, as indicated by the parasite burden in tracer calves and pasture larval counts. The treatment effect was eventually lost by the following spring since tracer calves on the treated pasture had only 33% fewer nematodes than those on the control pasture.  相似文献

The patterns of gastrointestinal and lung helminth infections in grazing calves were studied in two small grazing experiments carried out between May and October in 1985 and 1986, respectively, at Utrecht State University. For lungworm a very rapid translation of infective larvae was seen in both experiments, resulting in a rapid build-up of the worm burdens, and in July the second generation of Dictyocaulus caused husk. After the end of patency for lungworm, in the beginning of August, a rapid decrease in pasture infectivity, measured by pasture larval counts and worm counts of tracer calves, was observed. For the gastrointestinal nematodes the translation of infective larvae was much slower as a distinct 'midsummer increase' of pasture infectivity was not seen before the end of July. The worm counts of the tracer calves and the pasture larval counts showed that these larvae remained on pasture much longer than the lungworm larvae. As in Dictyocaulus, patency stopped in August-September in Nematodirus but not in Ostertagia and Cooperia, indicating a slower rate of development of immunity in both latter genera. In contrast to lungworm, the results indicate a clear and predictable seasonal pattern for gastrointestinal helminth infections.  相似文献

The efficacy of the Paratect Flex-Bolus for the control of parasitic gastroenteritis in calves was evaluated in a field experiment in the Swiss midland region. The bolus was administered to 9 first year grazing calves at 4 to 5 months of age before turnout on June 26 while 9 calves remained as untreated controls. Both groups were rotated between 8 paddocks that had been pregrazed by older cattle in spring. For a period of 12 weeks the faecal egg output of the treated calves was reduced significantly (p < 0.05) compared to the controls, whereas no significant differences were observed in the mean serum pepsinogen values of both groups. At the end of the experiment (November 14) the bolus-treated calves showed a 4 kg weight gain advantage over the controls which was not significant. The mild infection levels in both groups were probably due to the low pasture contamination with infective larvae throughout the season which most likely resulted from the late turnout of the calves. An outbreak of dictyocaulosis was observed in both groups in October and confirmed that the Paratect Flex-Bolus provides insufficient protection against this infection.  相似文献

When they were turned out to grass in May 1987 for their first season, 10 calves were dosed with a 5 x 750 mg oxfendazole pulse release bolus (OPRB) and a monensin sodium rumen delivery device (RDD); eight calves received one OPRB; 10 calves received one RDD and eight calves received neither bolus. Each group was set-stocked on individual paddocks which had been grazed during the previous season by cattle which developed clinical parasitic gastroenteritis and bronchitis (husk). In July, before they were due to be moved to new pastures in mid-summer, and before they were dosed strategically with levamisole HCl, some of the calves not dosed with an OPRB succumbed to clinical parasitic gastroenteritis and husk and received emergency anthelmintic treatment, after which no further clinical episodes occurred. The 'dose and move' strategy was implemented in early August after which both groups not dosed with an OPRB were set-stocked together until the trial ended on October 14, 147 days after turn out. The two groups of calves which had received the OPRB were also moved to new pasture and set-stocked together until the end of the trial. No evidence of clinical helminthiases developed in either of the two groups of calves dosed with OPRBs and their faecal worm egg and larval counts, and plasma pepsinogen activities remained low. They gained significantly more weight than the two groups of calves not dosed with OPRBs (P less than 0.001). The bolus types were compatible and induced no untoward side-effects when used together.  相似文献

The efficacy of a levamisole sustained-release bolus to prevent parasitic bronchitis in calves in their first grazing season was compared to ivermectin treatment at three, eight and thirteen weeks after turn out. Contamination of the pasture was established by experimentally infected seeder calves. Twenty calves were split into two groups. Ten calves of one group received a bolus at the start of the experiment. In the other group the calves were treated with ivermectin at 21, 56 and 91 days. Two principal calves from each group were killed during the experiment to study histopathological changes. Pairs of tracer calves were introduced on both pastures at intervals of four weeks throughout the grazing period. The permanent calves were challenged with lungworm larvae at housing and slaughtered four weeks later. Both systems prevented parasitic bronchitis. Larval output was completely reduced in the ivermectin-treated calves while all bolus-treated calves excreted larvae at certain times. The highest group average was 4 larvae per gram faeces. Eosinophilia, ELISA-titres and histopathological changes confirmed the differences in larval uptake. Challenge infection was not successful in either group and no worms were found at slaughter. Weight gain was significantly different at housing in favour of the ivermectin-treated calves, but after challenge this was reduced due to a higher weight gain in the bolus-treated calves. The practical consequences of the results have been discussed.  相似文献

A grazing study was performed with the main objective of examining the effect of fenbendazole (FBZ) in a ‘dose and move’ system on nematode infections in calves with special emphasis on Dictyocaulus viviparus.

Three groups of six calves were grazed from May to October 1993. One group (DM7) was treated with FBZ and moved to aftermath (pasture which had only been mown) 7 weeks after turnout. The second group (DM9) was similarly treated and moved 9 weeks after turnout and the third group served as untreated pasture control group (PC) and was moved to aftermath 9 weeks after turnout.

FBZ treatment removed adult lungworms from DM7 and DM9. Tracer calves grazed during the first 7 or the first 9 weeks after turnout acquired mean burdens of 18 and 125 lungworms, respectively. In PC faecal larval counts increased until the end of August. Most of the animals in this group were then suffering from lungworm disease and emergency treatment with ivermectin was given. In both FBZ-treated groups, larvae reappeared in the faeces of some of the calves 4–5 weeks after treatment. Subsequent reinfection resulted in higher mean faecal larval counts in both groups 2 months after treatment, although variation in faecal larval counts was high. In DM7 values tended to be higher than in DM9. These higher larval counts were associated with mild signs of parasitic bronchitis in some calves of DM7, whereas no signs were seen in DM9.

At the end of the experiment, all calves, and also a group of six permanently housed non-infected control calves (HC), were infected experimentally with 5000 D. viviparus larvae to evaluate development of immunity. The worm counts at necropsy showed that all calves on pasture had developed immunity.  相似文献

Under experimental conditions, fenbendazole given at doses of 0.4 and 1.0 mg/kg body weight suppressed calves' faecal output of Ostertagia and Cooperia species eggs and Dictyocaulus viviparus larvae. Both dose levels were given in the form of small daily drenches and the higher level showed greater efficacy. In a grazing experiment, medication with fenbendazole at 1.0 mg/kg/day administered intermittently to calves using an automatic dose dispenser almost completely suppressed the output of trichostrongylid eggs. As a result, infection on the pasture and in the calves remained at a low level throughout the grazing season. By contrast, control pasture and control calves showed rather heavy infection from mid-August onwards with significantly lower weight gains and widespread signs of parasitic gastroenteritis. At post mortem examination of representative calves from each group in November, the medicated animals had 99 per cent less Ostertagia species, whether adults or larvae arrested at the early fourth stage, and 95 per cent less Cooperia species compared with controls. Medication in the drinking water suppressed the faecal output of D viviparus larvae for most of the grazing season by comparison with the controls but the medicated calves became infected with this parasite towards the end of the season. Until this problem is overcome, precautions against parasitic bronchitis are advised when this system of medication is adopted.  相似文献
