MILK UREA CONCENTRATIONS IN DAIRY CATTLE: There has been increased use of milk urea concentration as an indicator of dietary protein intake and protein metabolism in dairy cattle over recent years. The value of milk urea content data in predicting dietary composition, particularly for pasture-fed cattle, has not been well described. PROTEIN METABOLISM AND UREA SYNTHESIS: Many factors influence the degradation of dietary proteins in the rumen, post-ruminal protein metabolism and urea synthesis in cattle. Strong positive correlations between nitrogenous fertiliser use and the crude protein content of pastures were identified by use of meta-analysis. Similar strong positive correlations were noted between dietary protein intake, rumen ammonia and plasma urea concentrations. The costs of urea synthesis include energy losses, and importantly, the loss of endogenous amino acids, which are deaminated in the synthesis of urea. MILK UREA AS AN INDICATOR OF PROTEIN METABOLISM: Urea concentrations in blood, plasma and milk are strongly correlated. Milk is an adequate indicator of blood and plasma urea content, but non-nutritional factors may significantly influence milk urea concentrations. dDietary protein and dairy cow fertility. Feeding more dietary protein has been negatively associated with dairy cow fertility in some but not all studies. We used meta-analysis to examine the relationship between dietary crude protein and conception rate. While a higher intake of dietary crude protein significantly lowered conception rate, the potential for feeding less degradable dietary protein to modify this relationship was not demonstrated.

dMilk urea concentrations and dairy cow fertility. The use of milk urea as an indicator of dietary energy and protein intake and as an indictor of reproductive performance has been questioned. We found that changes in urea concentration in body fluids explained only 25% (p = 0.08) of the variance in conception rate after conducting a meta-analysis of available studies.

dInterpretation of milk urea concentrations. High intakes of dietary protein may induce adaptations in urea metabolism, and the negative relationship identified between high intakes of dietary protein and fertility for Northern Hemisphere dairy herds may not necessarily apply in Australasian dairy herds. Because of the potential for cows to adapt to high protein diets, the use of a single milk urea determination on a herd will have limited value as an indicator of nutritional status and little value as a predictor of fertility.  相似文献

We studied effects of zilpaterol-HCl on steers consuming corn-based diets with nitrogen (N) supplementation provided by dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) or urea. Two sets of six steers (approximately 350 kg) were used in two replicates of similarly designed trials. Within each replicate, three steers were fed 60 mg/day of zilpaterol-HCl throughout the trial and three steers received no zilpaterol-HCl. Within zilpaterol treatment, three corn-based dietary N treatments were offered in Latin square designs: control (9.6% crude protein), urea (UREA; 12.4% crude protein) or DDGS (13.7% crude protein). Total feed intake was unexpectedly greater (p < 0.01) with zilpaterol feeding but was not affected by dietary N (p = 0.76). Nitrogen intake was greater (p < 0.01) when zilpaterol was fed and was greater (p < 0.05) for DDGS and UREA than for control. Despite greater N intake, zilpaterol did not affect urea entry rate (p = 0.80) or urea-N recycled to the gastrointestinal tract (GER; p = 0.94). As a percentage of N intake, urea entry rate (p = 0.19) tended to be less when zilpaterol was fed (91 vs. 123% of N intake), and GER was numerically (p = 0.34) less (72 vs. 92% of N intake). Microbial N flow was greater (p = 0.02) for zilpaterol than for control but did not differ (p = 0.78) among dietary N treatments. As a percentage of N intake, microbial N flow was unaffected by zilpaterol (p = 0.97), but was greater (p < 0.05) for control than DDGS or UREA. The lack of change in urea entry and GER in response to zilpaterol, despite greater N intake, as well as lower urea entry and GER when expressed as proportions of N intake provide some evidence that the amount of N available for urea production and recycling was reduced by zilpaterol.  相似文献

Milk urea determination is being used as a broad indicator of protein/energy imbalance in dairy herds. The main purpose of this study was to compare blood and bulk milk urea values in grazing herds, to evaluate their seasonal variation under South Chilean conditions, and to examine their potential relationships with herd fertility. The association between herd blood urea concentration (mean of seven lactating cows) and bulk milk urea concentration (tank containing milk from the previous 24 h) was determined in 21 diary herds. Reference values, seasonal and herd variance, and the frequency of herds with values outside a range of 2.5 to 7.3 mmol/l were determined in bulk milk samples obtained monthly for a period of one year from 82 suppliers at two creameries located in southern Chile. Finally, bulk milk urea was measured every two weeks in samples from 24 herds, and the first service conception rate (FSCR) from 2153 dairy cows was determined. Mean bulk urea concentration was highly correlated with mean herd blood urea concentration (r = 0.95; p < 0.01). Mean urea concentration in the bulk milk samples obtained during one year from 82 herds was 4.9 +/- 1.2 mmol/l, with a range of 1.5 to 11.6 mmol/l. The highest values were found during spring and the lowest values during the summer. There was a high seasonal variation (CV = 13-47%) and between-herd variation (CV = 20-31%). Out of a total of 984 samples, 5.4% had urea values > 7.3 mmol/l and 3.8% had values < 2.5 mmol/l. Of the 82 herds, 27% had values outside the reference interval (2.5-7.3 mmol/l) on two or more occasions. FSCR was lower in herds when the bulk milk urea was > 7.3 mmol/l (50.7%) than in cows, where the urea concentration was < 5.0 mmol/l (73.8%) at the time of insemination. The study concluded that bulk milk urea concentrations provided information similar to herd blood urea concentrations in local grazing dairy herds. There was a high frequency of herds with abnormal values, with large variations between herds and between seasons. Increased milk urea concentrations during spring were associated with lower conception rates.  相似文献

The relationship between milk urea concentration and the fertility of dairy cows was examined in two studies. The first examined the relationship between bulk milk urea concentration and overall herd fertility, using data collected from 250 herds in the UK. There was no relationship either between bulk milk urea concentration and fertility, or between changes in bulk milk urea concentration and fertility. The second study compared the relationship between the milk urea concentration five days after service, and the fertility of individual cows on 11 UK dairy farms. There was no significant difference between the milk urea concentration of the cows that became pregnant and those that did not.  相似文献

1. The effect of diets with increasing concentrations of crude protein at either fixed essential amino acid concentrations or at fixed essential amino acid:dietary crude protein ratios on performance was examined in 1- to 4-week-old male Cobb chicks. Increasing crude protein intakes at constant essential amino acid concentrations was carried out at two dietary energy contents. 2. Increasing crude protein resulted in a linear decrease in feed intake while weight gain and feed efficiency changed quadratically with a smaller positive effect at the highest crude protein intakes. Feed intake decreased and feed efficiency increased with higher dietary energy and interactions between protein and energy were significant. Abdominal fat content and the efficiency of protein retention decreased with increasing dietary protein intake. 3. Using constant essential amino acid:crude protein ratios at increasing crude protein intakes resulted in (Trial 3) feed intake, weight gain and feed efficiency all increasing before reaching a plateau. Abdominal fat decreased with protein intake and the efficiency of protein retention was quadratic, decreasing at the higher protein intakes. 4. Multiple regression analysis of the results of the three trials indicated that partition of energy intake into maintenance, fat-free tissue growth, fat and the energy required to transform protein intake in excess of retention explained more than 98% of variation. 5. It is proposed that broiler performance at the lower protein intakes was limited by either non-essential amino acid (Trials 1 and 2) or essential amino acid (Trial 3) intake whereas at high protein intakes the decreased efficiency of amino acid utilisation after growth requirements are fulfilled resulted in poorer performance.  相似文献

The effect of serum glucose, ASAT and urea on reproductive performance was studied in 45 Finnish dairy cows from 8 different herds. Blood samples were taken a month before calving as well as 2 weeks and 2 months after calving. Serum urea, ASAT and glucose were used as indicators of metabolic and energy balance. Glucose and ASAT concentrations were significantly correlated with fertility 2 weeks after calving, but not before calving or 2 months after calving. Antepartum, 60% of the cows had a low urea level; at 2 weeks and at 2 months postpartum 89% and 65%, respectively had low levels of urea. The cows were divided into groups as follows: low or high (greater than or equal to 2.9 mmol/l) glucose level and low or high (greater than or equal to 2.5 mmol/l) urea level. Low levels of glucose and/or urea in puerperium were associated with poor fertility. The intervals from calving to first insemination and conception were shorter in the group with high glucose and high urea than in the group with low values. The cows with the shortest intervals from calving to first insemination and conception showed adequate metabolic balance (high levels of urea and glucose). Clinical ketosis had an adverse affect on intervals from calving to first insemination and on conception. Intervals from calving to first insemination and to conception were significantly (p less than 0.01) longer in ketotic cows than in non-ketotic ones. Liver damage, reflected as elevated activity of ASAT, was associated with poor fertility. If shorter calving intervals are desired, adequate energy balance in puerperium is essential.  相似文献

The goals of this study were to determine the influence of the variations among udder quarters, the somatic cell count, the time of sampling during the day, sample conservation, and centrifugation on milk urea (UREA) concentrations, and to propose a sample collection procedure for herds that are not on a Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) program. Forty cows from 2 herds with different feeding practices were randomly selected. The quarter sampled and the somatic cell count did not significantly influence UREA concentrations. Milk urea concentrations were highest in the morning. The diurnal pattern was not influenced by intrinsic factors like parity, days postpartum, or daily milk yield. The UREA concentrations were significantly higher after refrigeration for one week (mean UREA change = +0.41 +/- 0.24 mmol/L, P = 0.0001) and freezing for one month (mean UREA change = +1.52 +/- 1.25 mmol/L, P = 0.0001). Urea concentrations were slightly higher in lactoserum than in whole milk (mean UREA difference = +0.17 +/- 0.24 mmol/L, P = 0.0001). Although this study included only 2 herds and does not allow extrapolation, differences were found in the diurnal pattern of UREA in these 2 herds, which possibly reflect differences in feeding strategy. With consideration of these results, a 6-point sampling procedure for herds that are not on a DHI program is proposed.  相似文献

: Irish dairy herd fertility has been declining since the 1980s. The extent, nature and causes of this decline in fertility and the current status of Irish dairy herd fertility were described. An increase in calving interval of approximately one day per year has been recorded. The principal components of this trend have been an increased incidence of postpartum endocrinopathies, reduced expression of oestrus and a fall in conception rate. Both submission rate and calving-to-service interval have increased slightly over time. Significant risk factors associated with these trends have been strain substitution within the Holstein-Friesian breed and single trait selection for milk production. Critically, these changes have been reflected in loss of body condition. Contributory factors included increased herd size and possibly increased use of DIYAI. The most recent Irish study showed that 48% of cows conceived to first service and 14% of cows were not pregnant at the end of the industry-average 15-week spring breeding season. However, the top quartile of herds achieved a first-service conception rate of 59%, illustrating the wide variation between herds. These phenotypic trends were attributed to both genetic and environmental factors and their interactions. Recent Irish dairy herd fertility performance falls short of the targets set for seasonal compact calving.  相似文献

Increasing a cow's intake of dietary protein intake can increase its milk production, but can also reduce its fertility. This paper reviews the effects of increasing dietary protein on the fertility of the dairy cow, and the mechanisms that may produce them. The effects vary widely, but all stages of the reproductive cycle from the return to cyclicity after parturition, to the survival of the embryo, may be affected. However, the underlying cause of the link between protein intake and fertility is unclear. Fertility could be reduced by a direct toxic effect of protein breakdown products, but alternatively the increased energy demand for their metabolism could be responsible. The effect of protein degradability is also uncertain. Excess rumen degradable protein is commonly associated with reduced fertility, but similar effects are produced by diets that contain excess rumen undegradable protein. Increasing the intake of protein of all degradabilities has significantly different effects on blood biochemistry than a reduction in the intake of energy, suggesting that not all the effects of protein are due to energy imbalance. The primary site of action of the effect is also unclear. Limited evidence suggests that it is localised to the reproductive system, but effects on the pituitary and hypothalamus, as well as the ovary and uterus, have all been postulated. It is also uncertain what toxic principle is involved. Ammonia, nitrate and urea have all been suggested, but there is no conclusive evidence. Although a high protein intake has been postulated to have an effect on fertility for over 30 years, the evidence remains inconclusive, and the aetiology and pathogenesis of the effect remain obscure.  相似文献

The possible relationship between nutrition and fertility in dairy cows are reviewed. Study of the literature shows that opinions on the effect of the various nutrients differ markedly. The conclusion which can be made is that in countries where standards of dairy farming are high, nutrition only plays a minor role in the problem of herd subfertility. In the course of time deficiencies in a large number of minerals, trace elements and vitamins have been stressed as a cause of inadequate fertility. However cows are at present generally fed with a lot of well balanced concentrates and therefore deficiencies are very unlikely to occur. During early lactation every high producing dairy cow has a negative energy balance. In a number of cows this results in anoestrus and in a long interval from parturition to first insemination. Overfeeding during late lactation and the dry period does not adversely affect subsequent reproduction but may cause puerperal disorders. The relation between protein nutrition and fertility is complex. Protein effects on fertility are minor. Problems can arise if there is a combination of a high percentage of crude protein (greater than 18%), a high rumen degradability of the protein and a low energy content of the diet. The value of metabolic profile tests is minimal because they do not differentiate between normal herds and herds with fertility problems.  相似文献

The concentration of urea in the milk of 510 dairy cows in 10 herds was determined at regular intervals for a year. The herds contained approximately equal numbers of Swedish Red and White, and Swedish Holstein cows. The mean ± sd concentration in the samples from individual cows was 5.32 ± 1.13 mmol/1, and the mean concentration in bulk milk was 5.39 ± 0.96 mmol/1. These values indicated that on average the herds were fed too much protein relative to their intake of energy throughout the year.Herd factors had a strong influence on the milk urea concentration. The concentration was lower during the first month of lactation than later in the lactation, and lower when the cows were housed during the winter than when they were grazing. There was a weak positive relationship between the daily milk yield and urea concentration, particularly during late lactation, but there was no relationship with either breed or age. Bulk milk urea was a reliable guide to the average urea concentration of a herd.  相似文献

The adequacy of current supplemental dietary selenium allowances for dairy cattle has been reviewed from the literature and by monitoring responses of dairy herds in a veterinary practice specializing in nutritional consultation. Both information sources tend to agree that a reference range of 70 to 100 ng of Se/mL of serum is an acceptable target concentration. This range can be attained most often by providing > 6 mg of supplemental Se.animal-1.d-1, but several factors affect the serum Se responses of different cows to specific Se intakes. These factors may include forage types and sources, ruminal environment, supplemental fat, dietary calcium, trace metals, and genetics. The major benefits, observed experimentally, of maintaining optimal Se intakes include minimizing the incidence of mastitis and preventing calf losses associated with myopathy and(or) respiratory disease.  相似文献

Two groups of 3‐day‐old Saanen goat kids (MILK and WMIX) were studied in order to investigate the effect of weaning on plasma ghrelin and insulin and on pancreatic activity. MILK kids received goat milk to age 50 days; WMIX kids were initially fed milk but started weaning at 30 days and were completely weaned by 48 days. Dry matter intake and body weights were recorded, and plasma samples were analysed for metabolites, ghrelin, insulin, leptin and α‐amylase. At 50 days, all the animals were slaughtered, pancreas samples were analysed for α‐amylase, zymogen, DNA and ribosomal capacity (RNA/zymogen). Seven days after the beginning of the weaning program, dry matter intake in the WMIX group began to decrease in relation to the MILK group. Nonetheless, body weight did not differ throughout the study period. Weaning significantly decreased plasma levels of glucose, amino acids, urea and insulin, but increased creatinine and ghrelin. In weaning kids ghrelin secretion may help minimize the negative consequences of the new diet on dry matter intake. Pancreatic zymogen and ribosomal capacity did not differ between the groups, whereas pancreatic amylase activity was over three times higher in MILK than WMIX kids even though the former had no dietary starch. This finding could be a consequence of lower pancreatic secretion of amylase in the MILK group due to the lack of dietary starch, resulting in pancreatic accumulation, but could also be due to higher plasma insulin in the MILK group, suggesting a role for insulin in the functional development of the pancreas in weaning goats.  相似文献

In modern high-yielding dairy herds fertility is of major economic importance. In order to gain maximum profit, calving intervals should not exceed 365 days. The achievement of a 365-day calving interval requires an early resumption of ovarian activity, an excellent oestrus detection, and a high first-service conception rate. Especially the inability to detect oestrus and to mate the cows by 60 to 80 days after calving is a common problem among dairy farmers nowadays. In this article a review is given about the occurrence, causes, treatment and prevention of post-partum anoestrus in dairy cows.  相似文献

A comprehensive database was established on the milk production and reproductive performance of dairy cows in 19 selected herds in Northern Ireland, varying in size, management system and genetic merit. Data were obtained for 2471 cows, 1775 of which calved in a second year, and 693 were culled from the herd for specific reasons. The estimated mean rate of heat detection (assessed by the interheat interval during the main breeding season) in all the herds was 71 per cent, with a range from 53 to 92 per cent The average conception rate to first insemination was 37.1 per cent (range 21 to 66 per cent). The average calving interval for the retained cows was 407.2 days (range 359 to 448 days). Twenty-eight per cent of the cows that calved were culled, with infertility being the largest single reason (26.8 per cent of the cows culled). There were major differences in reproductive performance between the herds, but heat detection rate, conception rate and calving interval did not appear to be affeded by a herd's genetic merit. The herds with shorter calving intervals were characterised by better heat detection efficiency (83 v 61 per cent, P<0.01), a shorter interval from calving to first insemination (74 v 97 days; P<0.05), a higher conception rate to first insemination (45 v 34 per cent, P>0.10) and a lower removal rate (23 v 37 per cent, P<0.01). Furthermore, the cows in these herds had lower body condition scores (BCS) in the dry period (3.0 v 3.3; P<0.05) but lost less body condition in early lactation (0.3 v 0.6 BCS units, P<0.05). These results show that dairy herd fertility in Northern Ireland is generally low and similar to that previously reported for England and the USA, but that in some herds changes in herd management practices improved the cows' fertility.  相似文献

Levels of urea in bulk milk from 80 herds were analysed twice monthly during 1 year to study herd variations and effect of season (Experiment 1). The overall (mean ± s) was 4.7 ± 1.3 mmol/1 ranging from 1.4 to 10.0 mmol/1. Generally, the urea levels were high in summer and early autumn and during this period there were 3 peaks, the first one at the beginning of June, the second one in the middle of July and the third one at the end of September. The peaks reflected feed changes and use of fertilizers commonly practized in the area.In another study samples of bulk milk were obtained from 49 herds using single forage diets with fresh grass silage and standardized concentrate mixtures (Experiment 2). In these herds all feed components given on the day of urea sampling were weighed as accurately as possible and a sample of the silage was taken for chemical analyses and determination of in vitro digestibility. Mean level of crude protein (CP) in silage dry matter was 15.6 ± 2.2 % and average dietary digestible crude protein (DCP) per feed unit (FU) was 146 ± 16 g. In all herds the protein levels in the total daily ration were equal to or above recommended standards. Urea concentration in bulk milk was significantly affected by the GP content in silage, level of dietary DGP and amount of DCP/FU. In energy deficient herds relatively high urea values were obtained without any great surplus of protein. Yield did not significantly affect the urea concentration in bulk milk.  相似文献

High concentrations of dietary nitrogen have been associated with reductions in the fertility of dairy cows, but the evidence is not conclusive and many studies have shown little or no effect. This paper reviews recent investigations of the effect of rapidly degradable sources of nitrogen on parameters of fertility, and concludes that high levels of dietary nitrogen do not routinely reduce fertility, even at intakes above those in normal dairy cow diets. It also concludes that cows may be able to adapt to high nitrogen diets so that diets that may reduce their fertility when introduced at critical periods, for example, when they are inseminated, do not reduce it when introduced at an earlier stage.  相似文献
