We analyzed the prevalence of the presumed inherited eye diseases (PIED) noncongenital cataract and progressive retinal atrophy in the Entlebucher Mountain Dog for systematic environmental influences and the additive genetic variation. Multivariate linear animal models using residual maximum likelihood methods and multivariate threshold animal models using Gibbs sampling in Bayesian analyses were used to estimate variance and covariance components. Data were obtained from the kennel club for Swiss Mountain Dog breeds in Germany. PIED were recorded using the standardized protocols of the Dortmunder Kreis, the German panel of the European Eye Scheme for Diagnosis of Inherited Eye Diseases in Animals (DOK). The material included 515 Entlebucher Mountain Dogs from 344 litters at 77 different kennels. Veterinary diagnoses for PIED were from the years 1981-2001. Pedigree information was available for up to nine generations. The multivariate animal model regarded the fixed effects of sex, birth year, experience of the veterinary ophthalmologist, litter size, percentage of examined dogs per litter, inbreeding coefficient and age at examination. The common environment of the litter and the additive genetic effect of the animal were taken into account as randomly distributed effects. The heritability estimates for PIED in the Entlebucher Mountain Dog were h2=0.15+/-0.06 (noncongenital cataract), and h2=0.34+/-0.08 (progressive retinal atrophy) in the linear model and h2=0.32+/-0.05 (noncongenital cataract) and h2=0.59+/-0.03 (progessive retinal atrophy) in the threshold model. The additive genetic correlation between noncongenital cataract and progressive retinal atrophy was moderately positive (r(g)=0.54+/-0.08) in the threshold model. The number of examinations performed by the veterinary ophthalmologists was associated with slightly higher heritabilities for noncongenital cataract and considerably higher heritabilities for progressive retinal atrophy. The investigated PIED in the Entlebucher Mountain Dog are genetically influenced and the size of the genetic parameters estimated may be sensitive to the accuracy of the diagnosis and how the data were collected.  相似文献

We analysed the systematic environmental influences and the additive genetic variation for the presumed inherited eye diseases (PIED), membrana pupillaris persistens, distichiasis, primary lens luxation, non-congenital cataract, and progressive retinal atrophy, in Tibetan Terriers. Data were obtained from the International Kennel Club for Tibetan dog breeds in Germany. PIED were recorded in the years 1987 to 2001 by standardised protocols of the Dortmunder Kreis, the association for diagnosis of inherited eye diseases in animals (DOK). The material included 849 Tibetan Terriers from 596 litters in 203 different kennels. The multivariate linear animal model using residual maximum likelihood methods regarded the fixed effects of sex, birth year, experience of the veterinary ophthalmologist, litter size, percentage of examined dogs per litter, inbreeding coefficient, and age at examination. The common environment of the litter and the additive genetic effect of the animal were taken into account as randomly distributed effects. The heritability estimates for PIED in Tibetan Terriers were h2=0.17+/-0.04 (membrana pupillaris persistens), h2=0.04+/-0.03 (distichiasis), h2=0.13+/-0.04 (primary lens luxation), h2=0.13+/-0.04 (non-congenital cataract), and h2=0.49+/-0.08 (progressive retinal atrophy). The additive genetic correlation between non-congenital cataract and progressive retinal atrophy was highly positive rg=0.76+/-0.11, while that between membrana pupillaris persistens and progressive retinal atrophy rg=-0.43+/-0.14 was highly negative. The number of examinations performed by the veterinary ophthalmologists was associated with higher heritabilities for non-congenital cataract and progressive retinal atrophy. We concluded from our analysis that all investigated PIED in Tibetan Terriers are genetically influenced.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence of cataracts in dogs presented to veterinary medical teaching hospitals in North America between 1964 and 2003. A retrospective study of all dogs presented with cataracts to veterinary medical teaching hospitals in North America between 1964 and 2003 was conducted to determine cataract prevalence. The different decades, breeds, gender, and age at time of presentation with cataract were compared. The prevalence of dogs presented with cataract varied by decade and ranged from 0.95% (1964-73), 1.88% (1974-83), 2.42% (1994-2003), to 3.5% (1984-93). The total number of dogs presented with cataracts over the 40-year period was 39,229. From 1964 to 2003 the prevalence of cataract formation in this patient population increased by about 255%. Fifty-nine breeds of dogs were affected with cataracts above the baseline prevalence of 1.61% seen in mixed-breed/hybrid dogs. The breeds with the highest cataract prevalence included: Smooth Fox Terrier (11.70%), Havanese (11.57%), Bichon Frise (11.45%), Boston Terrier (11.11%), Miniature Poodle (10.79%), Silky Terrier (10.29%) and Toy Poodle (10.21%). The breeds with the largest number of cataractous dogs during the entire four decades were the Boston Terrier (11.11%), Miniature Poodle (10.79%), American Cocker Spaniel (8.77%), Standard Poodle (7.00%), and Miniature Schnauzer (4.98%). Gender ratios of cataractous dogs seemed to affect limited breeds. Age of presentation with cataract diagnosis varied among several breeds. In the mixed-breed/hybrid baseline population, cataract formation appeared to be age related with a higher frequency of cataract formation in dogs after 4-7 years. Cataract formation is one of the most prevalent eye diseases in the dog population, and in about 60 breeds of dogs the prevalence of cataract exceeds that of the baseline mixed-breed/hybrid group. The prevalence of cataract is also influenced by age in most purebred dogs and affects 16.80% of the 7-15+-year-old mixed-breed/hybrid dog population. Total and age-related cataract prevalence in dogs seems very similar to that in man.  相似文献

A 1-yr retrospective study was undertaken to verify whether the prevalence of cellulitis in broiler chicken flocks was associated 1) with sex and average body weight controlling for the time of year and 2) with some other condemnation causes such as air-sacculitis, ascites, cyanosis, emaciation, valgus varus deformity, peritonitis, and total condemnation rate controlling for sex, average body weight, and time of year. Data were collected from four Québec abattoirs between October 1992 and September 1993. Data from 2452 unisex male and female broiler flocks were compiled and analyzed with univariate and multivariate models. The prevalence of cellulitis among flocks was 42.2 per 10,000 birds slaughtered. Cellulitis was associated with sex and increased with time of year (P < 0.0001). The prevalence was higher in male (mean +/- SD, 50.7+/-24.3; median, 31.8) than in female flocks (mean +/- SD, 34.2+/-15.6; median, 20.0) but showed no relationship with average body weight. Associations between condemnation causes and cellulitis were relatively weak; increases in the prevalence of cellulitis correlated with increases in total condemnation rate (r2 = 0.19), ascites (r2 = 0.09), airsacculitis (r2 = 0.0), cyanosis (r2 = 0.04), peritonitis (r2 = 0.03), emaciation (r2 = 0.02), and valgus varus deformity (r2 = 0.02). These results suggest that flock sex is a potential correlate of cellulitis prevalence in broiler chickens. Associations between the prevalence of cellulitis and other diseases observed at the abattoir were not very strong. However, it appears here that general disease status of Québec broiler flocks is a better indicator of cellulitis occurrence than the main diseases considered individually.  相似文献

Genetic parameters for the prevalence of abomasal displacement and for milk yield traits were estimated using a data set of 3578 cows. The animals originated from 50 farms near Hanover being under the official milk recording scheme. At these farms all cases of abomasal displacement in German Holsteins were registered from July 2001 to January 2003. Using REML heritability estimates in linear animal models were h2 = 0.034 +/- 0.014, h2 = 0.017 +/- 0.013 and h2 = 0.029 +/- 0.011 for all cases of abomasal displacement, leftsided abomasal displacement and rightsided abomasal displacement, respectively. Additive genetic correlations between all cases of abomasal displacement and milk yield traits were small, ranging from rg = -0.20 (fat content) to rg = 0.08 (milk kg). However, there was a highly positive additive genetic correlation between leftsided abomasal displacement and milk yield of rg = 0.683 +/- 0.227. Leftsided abomasal displacement was correlated additive genetically to fat and protein yield, fat and protein content with rg = 0.595 +/- 0.297, r9 = 0.653 +/- 0.250, rg = -0.768 +/- 0.3280 und rg = -0.643 +/- 0.354, respectively. The additive genetic correlation to the ratio between fat and protein content was rg = -0.585 +/- 0.470. For rightsided abomasal displacement, additive genetic correlations were of similar size but with reversed signs. The estimates obtained for the residual correlations were negligibly small throughout.  相似文献

Objective  Two pedigrees from the German English Cocker Spaniel population are presented to illustrate the familial occurrence of primary cataract (CAT) in single- and multicolored English Cocker Spaniels. The aim was to characterize similarities and differences in the prevalence and formation of CAT in these separately bred color variants of English Cocker Spaniels.
Materials  The study was based on the veterinary records for presumed inherited eye diseases of 1232 English Cocker Spaniels which were provided by the German panel of the European Eye Scheme for diagnosis of inherited eye diseases in animals (DOK, < http://www.dok-vet.de >). Data included information on 615 single-colored and 617 multicolored English Cocker Spaniels.
Results  CAT was diagnosed in 92 (14.96%) of the single-colored and 34 (5.51%) of the multicolored English Cocker Spaniels. The pedigree of the single-colored English Cocker Spaniels included 40 ophthalmologically examined dogs with 18 unaffected and 22 affected dogs. The pedigree of the multicolored English Cocker Spaniels contained 16 ophthalmologically examined dogs with 11 unaffected and five affected dogs.
Conclusions  In both color variants of the English Cocker Spaniels different forms of primary CAT with respect to location within the lens occurred among close relatives. Appearance of CAT was very heterogeneous without obvious sex differences. The sample pedigrees do not support the assumption of familial segregation of specific forms of primary CAT in English Cocker Spaniels.  相似文献

Ketoprofen (KTP) and meloxicam (MLX) are non-steroidal anti-inflamatory drugs used extensively in veterinary medicine. The pharmacokinetics of these drugs were studied in eight dogs following a single oral dose of 1 mg/kg of KTP as a racemate or 0.2 mg/kg of MLX. The concentrations of the drugs in plasma were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). There were differences between the disposition curves of the KTP enantiomers, confirming that the pharmacokinetics of KTP is enantioselective. (S)-(+)-KTP was the predominant enantiomer; the S:R ratio in the plasma increased from 2.58 +/- 0.38 at 15 min to 5.72 +/- 2.35 at 1 h. The area under the concentration time curve (AUC) of (S)-(+)-KTP was approximately 6 times greater than that of (R)-(-)-KTP. The mean (+/- SD) pharmacokinetic parameters for (S)-(+)-KTP were characterized as Tmax = 0.76 +/- 0.19 h, Cmax = 2.02 +/- 0.41 microg/ml, t1/2el = 1.65 +/- 0.48 h, AUC = 6.06 +/- 1.16 microg.h/ml, Vd/F = 0.39 +/- 0.07 L/kg, Cl/F = 170 +/- 39 ml/(kg.h). The mean (+/- SD) pharmacokinetic parameters of MLX were Tmax = 8.5 +/- 1.91 h, Cmax = 0.82 +/- 0.29 microg/ml, t1/2lambda(z) = 12.13 +/- 2.15 h, AUCinf = 15.41 +/- 1.24 microg.h/ml, Vd/F = 0.23 +/- 0.03 L/ kg, and Cl/F = 10 +/- 1.4 ml/(kg.h). Our results indicate significant pharmacokinetic differences between MLX and KTP after therapeutic doses.  相似文献

The duodenal passages of non-ammonia nitrogen (NAN), amino acid N (AA-N) and microbial N (MN) were measured in seven duodenal fistulated dairy cows (6130 kg FCM/305 d) during lactation receiving 30 different rations similar to those used in dairy practice. The rations consisted of roughage (protein-rich silages, hay) and concentrate mixture (corn, barley, oat) in a ratio of 60:40 on a DM basis or roughage/concentrate mixture/fodder beets in the proportions 60:20:20 or 60:0:40 respectively. N supplements consisted of soya bean meal and peas meal (untreated or treated with formaldehyde in each case), rapeseed meal, fish meal and urea. DM intake varied between 9.6 and 19.1 kg/d, the crude fibre content between 166 and 270 g/kg DM, the crude protein (CP) content between 111 and 184 g/kg DM, the AA content (N basis) of the CP between 51 and 82%, the unfermentable CP content of the CP between 23 and 49% and the organic matter digestibility between 70 and 79%. The duodenal passage of NAN was 24.2 +/- 2.7 g/kg DM intake, 34.9 +/- 4.1 g/kg apparently digestible organic matter (in total tract, DOM), 43.3 +/- 5.5 g/kg apparently digestible carbohydrates or 4.2 +/- 0.5 g/MJ net energy fat, (y +/- s, n = 90). The value measured for AA-N was 16.8 +/- 2.9 g/kg DM intake, and that for RNA-labelled microbial CP was 146 +/- 26 g/kg DOM. NAN passage (g/kg DM intake) correlated more closely with the duodenal digesta flow rate (DFR) (kg digesta/kg DM intake) as an intrinsic animal factor (r = 0.78) and with the rumen content dilution rate (RDR) (passage of microbial-free organic matter at duodenum/kg BW0.75.h) as a ration dependent factor (r = 0.64) than with the UDP fraction (% of ration CP) (r = 0.50) or other ration parameters. It was concluded that the specific effect of protein concentrates in mixed rations on duodenal NAN yields in lactating dairy cows is lower than hitherto assumed. The duodenal NAN yield of a single feedstuff or ration (g/kg DM) in cows is dependent on animal and feeding factors. The DFR could represents a suitable target for breeding activities.  相似文献

Feeding behavior and temperament may be useful in genetic evaluations either as indicator traits for other economically relevant traits or because the behavior traits may have a direct economic value. We determined the variation in feeding behavior and temperament of beef cattle sired by Angus, Charolais, or Hybrid bulls and evaluated their associations with performance, efficiency, and carcass merit. The behavior traits were daily feeding duration, feeding head down (HD) time, feeding frequency (FF), and flight speed (FS, as a measure of temperament). A pedigree file of 813 animals forming 28 paternal half-sib families with about 20 progeny per sire was used. Performance, feeding behavior, and efficiency records were available on 464 animals of which 381 and 302 had records on carcass merit and flight speed, respectively. Large SE reflect the number of animals used. Direct heritability estimates were 0.28 +/- 0.12 for feeding duration, 0.33 +/- 0.12 for HD, 0.38 +/- 0.13 for FF, and 0.49 +/- 0.18 for FS. Feeding duration had a weak positive genetic (r(g)) correlation with HD (r(g) = 0.25 +/- 0.32) and FS (r(g) = 0.42 +/- 0.26) but a moderate negative genetic correlation with FF (r(g) = -0.40 +/- 0.30). Feeding duration had positive phenotypic (r(p)) and genetic correlations with DMI (r(p) = 0.27; r(g) = 0.56 +/- 0.20) and residual feed intake (RFI; r(p) = 0.49; r(g) = 0.57 +/- 0.28) but was unrelated phenotypically with feed conversion ratio [FCR; which is the reciprocal of the efficiency of growth (G:F)]. Feeding duration was negatively correlated with FCR (r(g) = -0.25 +/- 0.29). Feeding frequency had a moderate to high negative genetic correlation with DMI (r(g) = -0.74 +/- 0.15), FCR (r(g) = -0.52 +/- 0.21), and RFI (r(g) = -0.77 +/- 0.21). Flight speed was negatively correlated phenotypically with DMI (r(p) = -0.35) but was unrelated phenotypically with FCR or RFI. On the other hand, FS had a weak negative genetic correlation with DMI (r(g) = -0.11 +/- 0.26), a moderate genetic correlation with FCR (r(g) = 0.40 +/- 0.26), and a negative genetic correlation with RFI (r(g) = -0.59 +/- 0.45). The results indicate that behavior traits may contribute to the variation in the efficiency of growth of beef cattle, and there are potential correlated responses to selection to improve efficiency. Feeding behavior and temperament may need to be included in the definition of beef cattle breeding goals, and approaches such as the culling of unmanageable cattle and the introduction of correct handling facilities or early life provision of appropriate experiences to improve handling will be useful.  相似文献

Elbow angles were measured in X-rays of both elbows to elucidate the usefulness of such data for selecting against elbow dysplasia (ED) in German shepherd dogs. These measurements record the size, proportions and alignments of the anconeal process (PA), the radius (RA), the olecranon (OL), and the ulnar trochlear notch (UL). The reference system for evaluating the information content of the measurements was the score for ED (ED-SV) as recommended by the International Elbow Working Group. Data from 2645 X-rayed dogs born from 1998 to 2001 in 1331 kennels were analysed by using residual maximum likelihood procedures to estimate heritabilities, additive genetic correlations and residual correlations. The pedigree file included 11,426 dogs and contained ancestors for up to six generations. ED-SV was significantly influenced by sex, by age within sex and by month of birth. The elbow angles were significantly influenced by the month and year of birth, X-ray positioning of the dog's forelimbs, angle of elbow flection, litter size and number of dogs X-rayed by the veterinary practitioners. The following heritability estimates were found: h2=0.18+/-0.04 for ED; h2=0.76+/-0.04 for OL; h2=0.52+/-0.05 for PA; h2=0.50+/-0.04 for UL; and h2=0.39+/-0.04 for RA. The additive genetic correlations of ED-SV with three elbow angles (OL, UL and RA) were close to zero. A higher additive genetic correlation to ED-SV was found only for PA, for which r(g)=0.31. The distributions of predicted breeding values for susceptibility to ED were not affected by regarding the elbow angles as additional traits in the multivariate prediction procedure. Measurements of elbow angles were thus shown to be unsuitable for use in selection programmes against ED in German shepherd dogs.  相似文献

1. The research was carried out to investigate correlations between breeder age, egg cholesterol content, blood cholesterol level and hatchability of broiler breeders. 2. Egg cholesterol content increased with increased breeder age. The mean yolk cholesterol contents (mg per g yolk) were 10.47+/-0.28, 15.34+/-0.65 and 15.64+/-0.71 mg/g at 28, 45 and 65 weeks of age, respectively. 3. There were positive correlations between yolk weight and yolk cholesterol content (mg/g yolk) (r=01.941; P<0.01) and egg cholesterol content (mg/egg) (r=0.980; P<0.01). 4. Negative correlations were found between egg yolk cholesterol content and hatchability of fertile eggs (r=-0.345; P<0.05), fertility ratio (r=-0.609; P<0.01) and hatchability of total eggs (r=-0.574; P<0.01). 5. The mean blood cholesterol levels were 165.1+/-11.04, 166.5+/-11.97 and 179.5+/-11.33 mg/dl at 28, 45 and 65 weeks of age, respectively.  相似文献

The pharmacokinetic behaviour of marbofloxacin, a new fluoroquinolone antimicrobial agent developed exclusively for veterinary use, was studied in mature horses (n = 5) after single-dose i.v. and i.m. administrations of 2 mg/kg bwt. Drug concentrations in plasma were determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and data obtained were subjected to compartmental and noncompartmental kinetic analysis. This compound presents a relatively high volume of distribution (V(SS) = 1.17 +/- 0.18 l/kg), which suggests good tissue penetration, and a total body clearance (Cl) of 0.19 +/- 0.042 l/kgh, which is related to a long elimination half-life (t(1/2beta) = 4.74 +/- 0.8 h and 5.47 +/- 1.33 h i.v. and i.m. respectively). Marbofloxacin was rapidly absorbed after i.m. administration (MAT = 33.8 +/- 14.2 min) and presented high bioavailability (F = 87.9 +/- 6.0%). Pharmacokinetic parameters are not significantly different between both routes of administration (P>0.05). After marbofloxacin i.m. administration, no adverse reactions at the site of injection were observed. Serum CK activity levels 12 h after administration increased over 8-fold (range 3-15) compared with pre-injection levels, but this activity decreased to 3-fold during the 24 h follow-up period. Based on the value of surrogate markers to predict clinical success, Cmax/MIC ratio or AUC/MIC ratio, single daily marbofloxacin dose of 2 mg/kg bwt may not be effective in treating infections in horses caused by pathogens with an MIC > or = 0.25 microg/ml. However, if we use a classical antimicrobial efficacy criteria, marbofloxacin can reach a high plasma peak concentration and maintain concentrations higher than MICs determined for marbofloxacin against most gram-negative veterinary pathogens throughout the administration period. Taking into account the fact that fluoroquinolones are considered to have a concentration-dependent effect and a long postantibiotic effect against gram-negative bacteria, a dose of 2 mg/kg bwt every 24 h could be adequate for marbofloxacin in horses.  相似文献

Records on 1,180 young Angus bulls and heifers involved in performance tests were used to estimate genetic and phenotypic parameters for feed intake, feed efficiency, and other postweaning traits. The mean age was 268 d at the start of the performance test, which comprised 21-d adjustment and 70-d test periods. Traits studied included 200-d weight, 400-d weight, scrotal circumference, ultrasonic measurements of rib and rump fat depths and longissimus muscle area, ADG, metabolic weight, daily feed intake, feed conversion ratio, and residual feed intake. For all traits except the last five, additional data from the Angus Society ofAustralia pedigree and performance database were included, which increased the number of animals to 27,229. Genetic (co)variances were estimated by REML using animal models. Direct heritability estimates for 200-d weight, 400-d weight, rib fat depth, ADG, feed conversion, and residual feed intake were 0.17 +/- 0.03, 0.27 +/- 0.03, 0.35 +/- 0.04, 0.28 +/- 0.04, 0.29 +/- 0.04, and 0.39 +/- 0.03, respectively. Feed conversion ratio was genetically (r(g) = 0.66 ) and phenotypically (r(p) = 0.53) correlated with residual feed intake. Feed conversion ratio was correlated (r(g) = -0.62, r(p) = -0.74) with ADG, whereas residual feed intake was not (rg = -0.04, r(p) = -0.06). Genetically, both residual feed intake and feed conversion ratio were negatively correlated with direct effects of 200-d weight (r(g) = -0.45 and -0.21) and 400-d weight (r(g) = -0.26 and -0.09). The correlations between the remaining traits and the feed efficiency traits were near zero, except between feed intake and feed conversion ratio (r(g) = 0.31, r(p) = 0.23), feed intake and residual feed intake (r(g) = 0.69, r(p) = 0.72), and rib fat depth and residual feed intake (r(g) = 0.17, r(p) = 0.14). These results indicate that genetic improvement in feed efficiency can be achieved through selection and, in general, correlated responses in growth and the other postweaning traits will be minimal.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence and distribution of types of cataract, investigate the effects of selective breeding on cataract development, and identify the relationship between posterior polar cataract and other types of cortical cataracts in Labrador Retrievers in The Netherlands. ANIMALS: 9,017 Labrador Retrievers. PROCEDURES: Records of 18,283 ophthalmic examinations performed by veterinary ophthalmologists from 1977 through 2005 were reviewed. There were 522 dogs affected by hereditary cataracts in 1 or both eyes without progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and 166 PRA-affected dogs with cataracts. These cataracts were divided into 3 groups: posterior polar (triangular) cataract, extensive immature and mature cataract, and a miscellaneous group. Dogs with PRA were analyzed separately. RESULTS: From 1980 through 2000, the prevalence of hereditary cataracts was stable at 8%. The prevalence of cataracts in offspring of cataract-affected dogs was significantly increased, compared with the prevalence in offspring of nonaffected dogs. The distribution of types of cataract was significantly different between dogs with primary cataracts and PRA-affected dogs. Dogs with posterior polar (triangular) cataracts produced affected offspring with the same distribution of types of cataracts as the entire population of primary cataract-affected dogs. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Cataract development in the Labrador Retriever population in The Netherlands appears to be a predominantly genetic disorder. Posterior polar (triangular) cataracts appear to be related to other types of hereditary cataract. Although there is no conclusive evidence, it seems valid to continue exclusion of all Labrador Retrievers affected by any type of primary cataract from breeding.  相似文献

(1) Genetic parameters for the sudden death syndrome (SDS) were estimated in meat-type chickens. Data were collected over 11 generations of selection for body weight within two distinct breeds (Cornish and White Rock). (2) The animal model was used exclusively with linear methods (LM) to estimate genetic parameters. Heritability (h2) of SDS on the liability scale was 0.30 +/- 0.002 and 0.25 +/- 0.002 in the Cornish and White Rock breeds, respectively. (3) A positive genetic correlation (r(g)) with ascites (AS) was determined (approximately 0.3 +/- 0.006). However, it was not possible to estimate the rg of SDS with body weight because of the low prevalence of the defect trait studied (1.8% in the Cornish and 1-5% in the White Rock). (4) Heritability of SDS calculated using male records only was 0.45 +/- 0.009 and 0.35 +/- 0.009, and r(g) with body weight was 0.30 +/- 0.010 and 0.27 +/- 0.009, in the Cornish and White Rock breeds, respectively. (5) In conclusion, the heart defect investigated was heritable with a positive genetic correlation with AS and body weight.  相似文献

Antibodies against Fasciola hepatica were detected in serum and individual milk samples of dairy cattle using an ELISA. Percentage positivity (PP) values in milk samples were related to serum PP values and were not influenced by days into lactation. The correlation coefficient between serum and individual milk samples was highly significant (r=0.84, P<0.005). The correlation coefficient between herd seroprevalence and herd milk antibody prevalence was 0.96. The correlation coefficient between prevalence measured by faecal egg count and both seroprevalence and milk antibody prevalence within the herd was 0.87. The diagnostic sensitivity and specificity for milk were 92% (95% CI=89-96) and 88% (95% CI=85-91), respectively, when the serum test was considered as a gold standard. In conclusion, the level of antibody to F. hepatica in milk is significantly correlated with the antibody level in serum and this ELISA is suitable as a means of routine veterinary diagnosis of exposure to F. hepatica in cattle and an alternative to testing sera.  相似文献

This study examined the captive western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) eye as compared and contrasted with the human eye. Bilateral ophthalmic examinations of western lowland gorillas (n = 5) while under general anesthesia were performed opportunistically, including slit-lamp biomicroscopy, dilated fundus examination, cycloplegic retinoscopy, Schiotz tonometry, corneal diameter and thickness measurements, A-scan and B-scan ultrasonography, keratometry, and cultures of the eyelid margins and bulbar conjunctiva. Mean spherical equivalent refractive error by cycloplegic retinoscopy was +1.20 +/- 0.59 diopters. Mean intraocular pressure by Schiotz tonometry was 12.0 +/- 4.3 mm Hg. Mean optic nerve head cup to disc ratio was 0.42 +/- 0.11. Mean horizontal corneal diameter was 13.4 +/- 0.8 mm, and mean vertical cornea diameter was 12.7 +/- 0.8 mm. Mean central corneal thickness by ultrasound pachymetry was 489 +/- 52 microm. Mean axial length of the eye by A-scan was 22.75 +/- 0.71 mm. Mean lens thickness by A-scan was 4.23 +/- 0.34 mm. Mean anterior chamber depth by A-scan was 4.00 +/- 0.26 mm. Mean keratometry reading was 44.38 +/- 1.64 diopters. Eyelid margin and bulbar conjunctival cultures isolated Candida sp. (n = 5), Staphylococcus aureus (n = 4), Staphylococcus epidermidis (n = 3), Staphylococcus saccharolyticus (n = 3), and Micrococcus sp. (n = 3). This study suggests important similarities between western lowland gorilla and human eyes. These similarities may allow diagnostics, techniques, and equipment for human eye surgery, such as those used for cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation, to be successfully utilized for gorillas.  相似文献

Blood glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) levels in 709 normal dromedary camels (442 females and 267 males) were assessed in the Canary Islands. All animals were intensively reared, and three different nutritional systems were evaluated, depending on selenium content of the diet. Mean GSH-Px level in the total population was 288.5+/-157.2 IU x g(-1) Hb. Reference ranges were estimated and enzymatic activities below 51 IU x g(-1) Hb were considered inadequate. GSH-Px activities obtained in females (298.1+/-155.7 IU x g(-1) Hb) were significantly (P = 0.037) higher than in males (272.6+/-157.2 IU x g(-1) Hb). When age groups were compared, only males between 6 and 12 months old exhibited significantly lower mean GSH-Px (P = 0.006) than females. A high correlation (r = 0.88) between serum selenium concentration and blood GSH-Px activity was estimated, and the regression equation was y = 2.5101x + 42.423. Selenium content of the diet above 0.1 mg x kg(-1) DM seems to supply adequate selenium requirements for dromedaries under intensive husbandry.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to analyse the heritabilitiy of the lactational incidence of displaced abomasum (DA) and the relationships of DA with milk production traits in German Holstein cows. Data were recorded between February 1999 and January 2000 in cooperation with five veterinary practitioners. Their veterinary practices were located in the northern part of Lower Saxony. The investigation included 160 dairy farms under the official milk-recording scheme with 9,315 cows. The lactational incidence of the left abomasal displacement amounted to 1.21%, and of the right abomasal displacement to 0.41%, respectively. The linear heritability estimates for the lactational incidences of left and right DA were h(2) = 0.05 +/- 0.012 and h(2) = 0.004 +/- 0.005, respectively. Using the Dempster-Lerner-transformation the corresponding heritabilities were h(2) = 0.53 and 0.09, respectively. Milk losses for the lactation when DA was diagnosed were significant and reached 1016 kg milk, 41 kg fat, 36 kg protein and 0.07% protein. Fat content significantly increased by 0.18%. The analysis could not show significant differences between cows diagnosed with DA and cows not diagnosed with DA in the 305-day milk production traits of the lactation preceding the diagnosis of DA. There was also no indication for an unequal distribution of breeding values for milk performance traits between cows with and without DA. The additive genetic correlations between 305-day milk performance and left DA were low. The results indicated that cows with a high milk production and superior breeding values for milk performance were not exposed to an increased risk for DA.  相似文献

Activity of the anti-oxidative enzymes glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), content of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and SH-groups were determined in native stallion semen (n = 8 stallions). Semen was then diluted in Kenney extender, EquiPro((R)) extender either with or without addition of N-acetyl cysteine or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and stored for 72 h at 5 degrees C. Correlations between initial activity of enzymes and development of semen motility and membrane integrity were calculated. Activities of GSH-Px, SOD and CAT immediately after semen collections were 10.0 +/- 0.6 picokatals, 0.40 +/- 0.03 SOD units and 0.70 +/- 0.05 nanokatals/10(6) spermatozoa respectively. TBARS content was 0.06 +/- 0.01 nmol and SH-group content 1.7 +/- 0.5 mmol/10(6) spermatozoa. The loss of motile spermatozoa during storage did not differ between extenders. N-acetyl cysteine had no effect on semen motility and membrane integrity. The loss in membrane-intact spermatozoa was highest (P < 0.05) in semen diluted in PBS. Motility and membrane integrity after addition of extender were positively correlated with GSH-Px and CAT, indicating that anti-oxidative mechanisms contribute to the initial high percentage of motile and membrane-intact spermatozoa. However, in these samples the decrease in semen quality was most pronounced. No correlations existed between initial activity of anti-oxidative enzymes, peroxidation products and semen quality during storage. This indicates that once extender has been added, peroxidative damage to sperm membranes is not the predominant cause of losses in semen quality.  相似文献
