Unilateral chorioretinitis caused by ophthalmomyiasis interna posterior in a 5-month-old, female spayed Dachshund is reported. Larva removal by pars plana vitrectomy was performed after an unsuccessful photocoagulation of the organism. The larva was intact after surgical removal and was identified as a first stage instar Cuterebra spp. larva. The eye remains visual and comfortable with no signs of residual or recurrent inflammation postoperatively. This report describes, for the first time, the successful surgical retrieval of an intravitreal fly larva in a dog using vitrectomy techniques without sacrificing either the globe or vision, and taxonomic identification of the parasite.  相似文献

A 10-year-old female West Highland white terrier was presented with refractory hyperplastic keratitis of the left cornea of one month's duration. At this time, a vascularised and rough lesion 5 mm in diameter was observed on the left cornea. No other abnormality was recognised on the affected eye. The corneal neoplasm was surgically removed and histologically diagnosed as a squamous cell carcinoma. For two months after the surgery, 0.04 percent mitomycin C (MMC) eye drops were applied as adjuvant chemotherapy. Primary corneal squamous cell carcinoma with no history of keratoconjunctivitis sicca is rare in dogs. In the present report, surgical removal of the neoplasm was combined with the topical administration of the anticancer drug mitomycin C and a good prognosis was obtained. The result indicates that the combination treatment used in this case may be an appropriate therapeutic choice for corneal squamous cell carcinoma in dogs.  相似文献

Ultrasonography, radiography and exploratory coeliotomy were used to diagnose and treat a large intracoelomic neoplasm from a female koi carp (Cyprinus carpio) presented for abdominal enlargement of several months duration. Feed was withheld for 1 week immediately prior to surgery and the fish was sedated with isoeugenol (AQUI-S) at a dose rate of 10 mL/L to facilitate diagnostic imaging techniques. Surgical anaesthesia was induced by adding tricaine (MS-222) 50 mg/L to the water and an exploratory coeliotomy and tumour removal was performed. The fish was allowed to recover in fresh water at 18 degrees C and salt was added slowly to the water over a period of 1 hour to a concentration of 5 g/L This concentration was maintained in a recovery pond for 1 week postoperatively. Enrofloxacin was administered intramuscularly (10 mg/kg) immediately, 3 days and 1 week postoperatively. A diagnosis of undifferentiated ovarian carcinoma was made on the basis of the histological appearance of the neoplasm and immunohistochemical staining.  相似文献

A tumor-like tissue mass of lateral-limbal site in the right eye of a 12-year-old Cob Pony mare was presented for surgical removal. The mass, covering the lateral limbus, bulbar conjunctiva and part of the cornea, was surgically removed, and the corneal defect repaired with a pedicle bulbar conjunctival graft. The mass was inflammatory in nature containing mononuclear cells. No recurrence or complication occurred at 6- and 12-month follow-up examination.  相似文献

An adult male giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) was presented with a cutaneous mass ventral to the eye. The animal was anesthetized and the mass was surgically excised. Histopathologic examination determined that the mass was a benign cavernous hemangioma, the first reported case in a giant panda.  相似文献

Three studies were undertaken on farmed red and red x wapiti deer to evaluate xylazine and a xylazine/fentanyl citrate/azaperone combination for velvet antler removal. In the first experiment, 30 1-2 year-old red and 25% red x wapiti deer whose velvet was to be removed were given either 5% xylazine alone at 0.5 mg/kg body weight intramuscularly or the same dose rate of a commercially available mixture of 5% xylazine with the addition of 0.4 mg of fentanyl citrate and 3.2 mg of azaperone per ml. Physiological, behavioural and analgesic responses and reversal times after yohimbine or yohimbine and naloxone were monitored. There were no differences in heart rate, respiration rate, sedative or analgesic properties detected between xylazine or the xylazine/fentanyl citrate/azaperone combination. All deer became recumbent, but those given the xylazine/fentanyl citrate/azaperone combination became recumbent more rapidly than those given xylazine alone (9.4 and 12.5 minutes, respectively, p<0.05). The arousal pattern and timing of reversal of xylazine and xylazine/fentanyl citrate/azaperone using yohimbine and yohimbine and naloxone, respectively, were similar. The second experiment evaluated the reversal of the xylazine/fentanyl citrate/azaperone combination with either yohimbine or yohimbine and naloxone in 43 3-year-old red deer stags after velvet antler removal. There were no differences in arousal pattern or time to standing between reversal treatments. Sixteen 1-year-old red and 25% red x wapiti stags were used in the third experiment to evaluate clinically the analgesic properties of xylazine and xylazine/fentanyl citrate/azaperone combination during velvet removal without the application of a local anaesthetic agent. Withdrawal responses were observed in most deer after the xylazine/fentanyl citrate/azaperone combination at dosages containing 0.5, 0.7 and 0.75 mg of xylazine/kg and after xylazine alone at 0.7 mg/kg, indicating that insufficient analgesia was provided by the systemic agent for the surgical procedure of velvet antler removal. These studies have shown that the knock-down effect of the xylazine/fentanyl citrate/azaperone combination was more rapid than that of xylazine alone, but that other physiological, behavioural and analgesic responses at doses used and evaluated by the methods used were similar. Reversal of both the xylazine and xylazine/fentanyl citrate/azaperone combination was similar when using either yohimbine alone for xylazine and the xylazine/fentanyl citrate/azaperone combination or yohimbine and naloxone for the xylazine/fentanyl citrate/azaperone combination. The evaluation of surgical analgesia for antler removal suggested that both xylazine alone and the xylazine/fentanyl citrate/azaperone combination provided insufficient analgesia and that local anaesthetic should be used in all cases.  相似文献

A 1‐year‐old Dutch Warmblood gelding was presented to the University of Florida’s Large Animal Hospital (UF‐LAH) for correction of ectropion of the right lower eyelid. The ectropion was the result of a lower eyelid laceration. A primary repair was performed by the referring veterinarian; however, the horse prematurely removed the sutures and the wound healed with inversion of the eyelid margin. Surgical correction of the entropion, with removal of tissue from the lower eyelid, resulted in cicatricial ectropion. During the initial evaluation at UF‐LAH, a corneal ulcer was noted in the right eye because of exposure from the anatomically nonfunctional lower eyelid. A modified Kuhnt–Szymanowski procedure was performed to correct the ectropion and repair the eyelid margin. The surgical site healed appropriately with an acceptable cosmetic and functional result. No recurrences of corneal ulcers in the right eye were reported in the 18 months following surgical correction of the ectropion.  相似文献

A 14-year-old spayed female domestic short-haired cat was presented for evaluation of a mass in the right eye. Ophthalmic examination revealed a blind right eye and presence of two distinct masses: a pink and a red-to-brown mass, the latter occupying most of the cornea and part of the conjunctiva. Exenteration was performed under general anesthesia, and the ocular tissues were processed routinely for histopathology. Upon microscopic examination, a malignant epithelial neoplasm and a benign vascular neoplasm were present in the cornea. The conjunctiva and the third eyelid were also affected. Upon immunohistochemistry, the epithelial tumor was positive for cytokeratin and negative for vimentin and the endothelial tumor was negative for cytokeratin and positive for vimentin. A diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and hemangioma was made. The SCC was affecting the cornea, bulbar conjunctiva (lateral and inferior) and the base of the third eyelid, whereas the hemangioma was affecting the cornea and medial limbus. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of concomitant SCC and hemangioma affecting the ocular surface in a cat.  相似文献

Postoperative results of 113 unilateral and 77 bilateral extracapsular cataract extractions (EC-CEs) in dogs were evaluated retrospectively. Restoration or improvement of functional vision was achieved in 79.6% of the eyes in dogs with unilateral extraction and 85.7% of the eyes in dogs with bilateral extractions at weeks 4 to 6. Complications occurring 6 weeks to 9 months after lens extraction lessened the surgical success rate in both groups. Twenty-six percent of the dogs in which bilateral lens removal was performed suffered complications resulting in surgical failure in one eye. When using the criterion that one or both treated eyes had functional vision, a short-term success rate of 98.7% was found for bilateral extractions.  相似文献

An 8-year-old domestic shorthair cat was examined for severe anterior uveitis of the right eye that was unresponsive to aggressive treatment with anti-inflammatory drugs and for a possible intraocular parasite or foreign body trapped within a large fibrin clot in the anterior chamber. Surgical exploration of a presumed entry site on the caudal aspect of the third eyelid led to keratotomy and removal of a larval parasite later identified as a first instar Cuterebra spp. Aggressive treatment with anti-inflammatory drugs was continued after surgery, and intraocular pressure was monitored closely to ensure that the cat did not develop glaucoma. Two weeks after surgery, the cat had vision in the affected eye, with resolving uveitis and a normal fundus. Six weeks after surgery, the uveitis continued to resolve; however, the cat did not have vision in the affected eye, and examination of the fundus revealed retinal atrophy. In contrast to the condition in humans, a Cuterebra spp larval infection within the eye of cats may cause not only an intense, acute inflammatory reaction, but also retinal degeneration and blindness despite prompt surgical removal.  相似文献

A 5‐year‐old male telescope goldfish (Carassius auratus) developed buphthalmia of the left eye. An enucleation was performed and a diagnosis of a neuroectodermal tumor was made on histological examination. Although the fish initially recovered, it was killed 49 days postsurgery due to a severe decline in its condition. On histological evaluation of postmortem tissue samples, it was determined that the fish also had a neuroectodermal tumor of the right eye with local invasion of the brain. On immunohistochemistry, the neoplastic cells were positive for S‐100. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first published case of naturally occurring bilateral intraocular neuroectodermal tumors in a fish.  相似文献

Abstract

Channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus with infections of yellow grubs Clinostomum marginatum and eye flukes Diplostomum spathaceum were treated with 2 mg Droncit (praziquantel)/L in a water bath for 2 and 4 h. At the time of treatment, 80% of the fish had visible yellow grubs and 70% had opaque eyes. Fourteen days after treatment, 40.1% of the yellow grubs in the 2-h treatment were dead. No grubs were dead in the 4-h treatment; however, the number of yellow grubs was reduced in the treated fish. No dead eye flukes were seen in untreated fish after 14 d, but 59.2 and 44.4% of eye flukes in the 2- and 4-h treatments, respectively, were dead. At 21 d, the percentages of dead eye flukes were 86% (2 h) and 90.1% (4 h). Droncit had limited effect on yellow grubs in channel catfish, but the chemical had a beneficial effect of reducing numbers of eye flukes.  相似文献

选用初体均重为25.85 g的军曹鱼幼鱼225尾随机分为5组,每组设3个重复,每个重复15尾.分别投喂添加5种不同剂量维生素C(添加量分别为0、37.5、75、150和300 mg/kg)的试验饲料,试验期为56 d,观察维生素c对军曹鱼幼鱼生长、组织维生素C积累量及非特异性免疫的影响.结果表明,随着饲料中维生素C添加量增加,军曹鱼幼鱼增重率和特定生长率呈现出上升后下降趋势,在75 mg/kg时达到最高值,显著高于0和300 mg/kg组(P<0.05).全鱼粗蛋白质含量随着饲料中维生素C添加量的升高亦呈现先上升后下降趋势,在75 mg/kg时达到最高值,全鱼干物质、粗蛋白质、粗脂肪、灰分含量在各组之间均无显著差异(P>0.05).血清维生素C积累量随着饲料中维生素C添加量的增加呈现先上升后下降趋势,在150 mg/kg时达到最高值且显著高于0 mg/kg组(P<0.05);脑和肝脏中维生素C含量在300 mg/kg时达到最高值.300 mg/kg组脑中维生素C含量显著高于0,37.5和75 mg/kg组(P<0.05),肝脏中维生素C含量显著高于0,37.5和150 mg/kg组(P<0.05).随着饲料中维生素C添加量的增加,溶菌酶活性呈现先上升后下降趋势,在75 mg/kg达到最高,显著高于0,37.5和300 mg/kg组(P<0.05);血清总抗氧化能力呈现上升趋势,75、150和300 mg/kg组显著高于0 mg/kg组(P<0.05);肾抗氧离子自由基在150 mg/kg组达到最高,但各组之间无显著差异(P>0.05).以鱼体增重率和血清溶菌酶含量为指标,经折线模型回归分析求得军曹鱼幼鱼饲料中维生素C的适宜添加量分别为70和80.72 mg/kg.  相似文献

Ichthyophthirius multifiliis Fouquet, 1876 infections on intensively reared fish stocks can increase rapidly, which if left unmanaged, can result in the heavy loss of stock. The present study explores the efficacy of long duration, low dose (1, 2 and 5 mg L(-1)) treatments of bronopol (marketed as Pyceze?, Novartis Ltd.) in reducing the number of trophonts establishing on juvenile Oncorhynchus mykiss held under small scale culture conditions. The effect of bronopol on the colonisation success of infective theronts was also investigated by adding 2 mg L(-1) bronopol to the water prior and during the infection process. The number of parasites surviving on fish treated this way was compared to groups of fish that only received treatment after infection had occurred. The effect of bronopol on exiting trophonts throughout their external development to the point of theront release was also assessed through the delivery of 1 mg L(-1), 2 mg L(-1) and 5 mg L(-1) bronopol for up to 27 days consecutively (days 9-36 post-infection). The trial showed that a nominal dose of 2 mg L(-1) bronopol administered prior to infection significantly reduced the number of theronts surviving in the water column at the time of the initial challenge by 35-40% (P<0.05). Similarly, doses of 2 and 5 mg L(-1) bronopol administered as the first wave of mature I. multifiliis trophonts exited fish (i.e. day 11 onwards) to develop externally, reduced the number of trophonts establishing on fish as the second cycle of infection by 52-83%. Continuous application of 2 and 5 mg L(-1) bronopol throughout the second and third cycles of I. multifiliis infection gave further reductions of between 90 and 98%. The number of trophonts on the fish in the control tanks and those treated with 1 mg L(-1) and the 2 mg L(-1) dose at the time of initial infection, by comparison, were observed to increase with successive cycles of infection. From these small scale tank trials, this study demonstrates that the strategic, long duration, low dose delivery of drugs like bronopol can significantly reduce the number of trophonts establishing on fish suggesting the potential of this drug at managing I. multifiliis infections.  相似文献

Abstract

A tolerance study was conducted to determine the palatability of florfenicol to channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus. Four tanks of fish (20 fish/tank) were assigned to each of five treatments distinguished by the amount of florfenicol given in feed per kilogram of body weight, namely, 0, 10, 20, 40, or 100 mg. Fish were fed at a rate of 2.5% of body weight per day for 10 consecutive days. On day 11, all surviving fish were euthanatized, counted, and weighed as a group. Florfenicol- medicated feed was palatable to fish at doses of 10, 20, 40, and 100 mg for 10 consecutive days. All 400 fish were necropsied and examined by histopathology, and no treatment-related changes were observed. In a separate exploratory efficacy study, four tanks (20 fish/tank) were assigned to each of the following treatments: (1) not challenged with Edwardsiella ictaluri and fed unmedicated feed, (2) challenged with E. ictaluri and fed unmedicated feed, (3) challenged with E. ictaluri and fed florfenicol at 10 mg per kilogram of body weight, (4) challenged and fed florfenicol at 20 mg/kg, and (5) challenged and fed florfenicol at 40 mg/kg. Treatment was initiated the day after inoculation, and feed was administered by hand for five consecutive days at 2.5% of body weight. The cumulative mortality observed over a 17-d period in treatment groups 1–5 was 2.5, 57.5, 0, 1.25, and 1.25%, respectively. All 400 fish were necropsied and examined by histopathology. The results indicate that florfenicol was effective in controlling mortality from enteric septicemia of catfish with no adverse treatment-related tissue changes. Florfenicol was palatable, safe, and efficacious in controlling mortality due to infection by E. ictaluri in channel catfish.  相似文献

A retrospective evaluation of 5 cases of orbital or intraocular porcupine quills in the dog and a literature review from MEDLINE (1983-1995) is presented. This paper reviews the diagnosis, therapy, and visual prognosis of ocular and orbital quills in the dog. Distinguishing penetration and perforation of the eye and intraocular structures is paramount in establishing a visual prognosis and appropriate therapy. Perforation of the cornea or sclera, lens, or the uvea and retina necessitates prompt specialized surgical therapy to save vision. The diagnosis of orbital quills can be readily confirmed with ultrasonography. The characteristic sonographic appearance of a double-banded, linear, hyperechoic object allows accurate localization of the quill, which aids surgical removal.  相似文献

The pharmacokinetics of intravenously and orally administered enrofloxacin was determined in fingerling rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Doses of 5 or 10 mg enrofloxacin/kg body weight were administered intravenously to 26 fish for each dose and blood was sampled over a 60-h period at 15 degrees C. Two groups of fish were treated orally with 5, 10, or 50 mg/kg (80 fish/dose at each temperature) and held at 15 degrees C or 10 degrees C during the 60-h sampling period. Following intravenous administration, the serum concentration-time data of enrofloxacin in rainbow trout were best described by a two-compartment open model for both doses of 5 and 10 mg enrofloxacin/kg. The hybrid rate constants alpha and beta did not differ between doses. The distributional phase was rapid with a half-life of 6-7 min for both doses. Overall half-lives of elimination were 24.4 h (95% CI = 20.2-30.8) and 30.4 h (24.2-41.0), respectively, for the 5- and 10-mg/kg doses. A large Vd(area) was observed following dosing of either 5 or 10 mg enrofloxacin/kg,: 3.22 and 2.56 l/kg, respectively. Whole body clearance for 5 mg/kg was 92 ml/h.kg and 58 ml/h.kg at the 10-mg/kg dose. Following oral administration, the serum concentration-time data for enrofloxacin were best described as a one-compartment open model with first-order absorption and elimination. Apparent Ka over all doses at 10 degrees C averaged 62% less than apparent Ka at 15 degrees C. Estimates of the apparent t(1/2)e over both temperatures ranged from 29.5 h (18.4-73.4) to 56.3 h (38.3-106.6). Bioavailability averaged 42% over all doses at 15 degrees C and was decreased to an average of 25% at 10 degrees C. Peak serum concentrations appeared between 6 and 8 h following dosing. A dose of 5 mg/kg/day was estimated to provide average steady-state serum concentrations at 10 degrees C that are approximately 4.5 times the highest reported MIC values for Streptococcus spp., the fish pathogen least sensitive to enrofloxacin. Owing to the long apparent half-life of elimination of enrofloxacin in fingerling trout, it would take approximately 5 to 9 days to achieve these predicted steady-state serum concentrations; this estimate is important when considering the duration of therapy in clinical trials.  相似文献

Abstract

The biflagellated, single-celled parasite Ichthyobodo necator can cause significant losses among fish populations, particularly those cultured in tanks. Treatments of KMnO4 and CuSO4 were evaluated against a naturally occurring I. necator infestation on sunshine bass (female white bass Morone chrysops × male striped bass M. saxatilis) raised in tanks. Four-hour static treatments with 3 mg of KMnO4/L of water (2.5 mg/L above the determined KMnO4 demand) or 2 mg of CuSO4/L of water (total alkalinity = 207 mg/L; total hardness = 95 mg/L) were randomly applied to 4 tanks/treatment (23 fish/tank); the same treatments were reapplied 2 d later. Four tanks were used as positive controls. By 2 d posttreatment (after the second treatment), only 17.4% of the untreated control fish survived, and a sample of the remaining fish was heavily infested with I. necator. All remaining control fish were dead by 5 d posttreatment. The KMnO4 treatment significantly curtailed the initial mortality (survival = 92.4%) and slightly reduced the high parasite loads at 2 d posttreatment. However, fish mortalities increased dramatically over the next 3 d (survival at 5 d posttreatment = 37.5%), and parasite loads from sampled fish remained high. The CuSO4 treatment was effective in significantly lowering the parasite load (almost eliminating I. necator) and maintaining a high fish survival (87.5%) by 5 d posttreatment. The findings in this study clearly demonstrate that CuSO4 is a viable treatment for ichthyobodosis in tanks.  相似文献

Objective— To report arthroscopic diagnosis and treatment of synovial hemangioma in a dog.
Study Design— Case report.
Animal— Standard Poodle (8-year-old neutered male).
Methods— A soft tissue density mass observed radiographically in the left stifle joint of a dog with a 2-month history of recurrent lameness, hemarthrosis, and a slight cranial drawer sign, was located by diagnostic arthroscopy and surgically excised via arthrotomy.
Results— Histologic evaluation revealed tissue composed of variably sized cavernous vascular spaces filled with erythrocytes that were considered compatible with synovial hemangioma.
Conclusions— In this dog, synovial hemangioma evident as a soft tissue mass on radiographs was associated with chronic lameness and hemarthrosis, and resolved with surgical excision.
Clinical Relevance— Synovial hemangioma, although seemingly rare in dogs, should be considered in the differential diagnosis for nontraumatic, recurrent lameness, and unresponsive to anti-inflammatory therapy when there is a circumscribed intracapsular soft tissue mass evident radiographically together with hemarthrosis.  相似文献
