Stigma exsertion in male sterile lines of hybrid rice is important for seed yield. In the present study, ZS616 [Oryza sativa subsp.Xian(indica)], a male sterile line with a stigma exsertion rate(SER) as high as 94.5%, was crossed to DS552, a japonica line with almost no exserted stigmas.F3 plants with extremely low and high SER were sequenced to identify SER-associated quantitative trait loci(QTL).A major QTL for SER, qSER-3.1, was identified along with other QTL on chromosome 3 in a 3.9 Mb region.A total of 307 nonsynonymous single-nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs) and 27 frame-shift insertion/deletions(InDels)differentiating ZS616 and DS552 were identified in the region containing qSER-3.1.Most SNPs(294) and InDels(25) were excluded after further analysis because they were shared by ZS616 and low(<2.0%) SER accessions in the Huazhong Agricultural University(HAU) core rice collection.Association analysis using the full HAU collection identified a 17-bp InDel in OS03 G0689400 as the most likely causal genetic variant underlying qSER-3.1.ZS616-type accessions(n = 54, with the 17-bp insertion) in the HAU collection had minimum(16.5%)and mean(39.6%) SERs significantly greater than those(n = 424) without the insertion(with minimum and mean SERs of 0.2% and 20.6%, respectively). Thus, this study identified a major QTL for stigma exsertion and revealed the mutation in a candidate gene for the QTL.  相似文献

This study explored whether the average grain weight of wheat tends to be reduced when grain number is increased due to either competition or, to a consistent increase in the relative proportion of grains of smaller weight potential. Three field experiments considering environmental, genetic and environmental × genetic effects on yield and its main components were analysed during the 2003/2004 growing season in two different locations within the Mediterranean area of Catalonia, Spain. The relationship between grain weight and number of grains per unit land area was analysed for both the average of all grains (AGW) and for grains in specific positions of the main-shoot spikes: proximal (CPg) and distal (CDg) grains of central spikelets, and proximal grains of the near apical (APg) and near basal (BPg) spikelets. The proportional contribution of grains per spike for the different grain positions and the relative contribution of spikes per m2 made by the main shoot or tillers were also examined. In the three experiments, AGW was reduced when grain number was increased due to genetic and/or environmental factors. However, the slopes of the straight-lines that represented the negative relationship between grain number and grain weight were lower (less negative) and less significant for CPg (b = −0.20, P > 0.20), CDg (b = 0.06, P > 0.20) and BPg (b = −0.21, P > 0.20) than for AGW (b = −0.40, P < 0.05). The proportional contribution of distal grains and tiller spikes (both with relatively light grains) were directly related to grain number increases. Therefore, as grain number increased there was a higher proportion of grains of low potential weight. Thus, the average grain weight was concomitantly reduced when grain number increased by increasing the proportion of “small grains” in the canopy independently of any competitive relationship between growing grains.  相似文献

Timely sowing is critical for achieving high grain yields in winter cereals. However, inadequate seed-zone moisture for germination commonly delays sowing to reduce biomass and subsequent yield in semi-arid environments. Sowing deep to reach soil moisture is often avoided by growers of Rht-B1b and Rht-D1b semi-dwarf wheat as these wheat show poor emergence when sown deep. Their reduced cell elongation associated with insensitivity to endogenous gibberellins, results in shorter coleoptiles and smaller early leaf area. Alternative dwarfing genes responsive to endogenous gibberellins (e.g. Rht8) are available for use in wheat breeding. These reduce plant height without affecting coleoptile length and offer potential to select longer coleoptile wheat for deep sowing. Nine semidwarf (Rht8, Rht-B1b, and Rht-D1b) and seven tall (rht) wheat genotypes were sown at depths of 50, 80 and 110 mm at three locations in 2 or 3 years. Coleoptile lengths measured in a growth cabinet at four temperatures (11, 15, 19 and 23 °C) were strongly correlated with coleoptile length (rp = 0.77–0.79**) and plant number (rp = 0.49*–0.79**) in deep-sown plots in the field. Furthermore, differences in coleoptile length were genetically correlated with greater numbers of emerged seedlings (rg = 0.97**), shallower crown depth (−0.58**), greater seedling leaf area (0.59**) and seedling biomass (0.44*). Wheat containing the Rht-B1b or Rht-D1b dwarfing genes produced significantly (P < 0.01) shorter coleoptiles (97 mm) than both Rht8 (118 mm) and tall (117 mm) wheat. In turn, compared with emergence from 50 mm depth, the Rht-B1b and Rht-D1b wheat produced significantly fewer seedlings at 110 mm sowing depth (−62%) than either Rht8 (−41%) or tall (−37%) wheat. Effects of deep sowing early in the season were maintained with reductions in spike number and biomass at both anthesis and maturity. Kernel number was also reduced with deep sowing leading to reductions in grain yield. Over all entries, genotypic increases in plant number were associated with increases in fertile spike (rg = 0.61**) and kernel number (0.21*), total biomass (0.26*) and grain yield (0.28*). Reduction in spike number and grain yield with deep sowing was smallest for the Rht8 (−18 and −10%) and rht (−15 and −7%) wheat, and largest for the Rht-B1b/D1b (−39 and −16%) wheat. Plant height and coleoptile length were independent among Rht8 and tall wheat genotypes. This study demonstrates the importance of good seedling emergence in achieving high wheat yields, and the potential use of alternative dwarfing genes such as Rht8 in development of long coleoptile, reduced height wheat suitable for deep sowing.  相似文献

Direct seeding instead of transplanting for rice (Oryza sativa L.) has increasingly been used in northern and eastern China because of labor and cost saving. However, poor germinability is still one of the major problems faced in the adoption of direct seeding under low temperature (low temperature germinability: LTG) and anoxia (anoxia germinability: AG) condition. To gain an understanding of the genetic control of seed germinability under these unfavourable conditions, two rice lines, USSR5 (japonica type) and N22 (indica type) and F2 individuals derived from the cross USSR5 × N22 were tested for LTG and AG. USSR5 and N22 differ significantly for both LTG and AG. The LTG of the F2 individuals ranged from 0 to 100% after a 10 days incubation. AG ranged from 0.0 to 4.0 cm shoot length. Based on segregation in the F2 population, a linkage map was constructed using 121 SSR markers. The map covered 1821.5 cM, with a mean inter-marker distance of 16.7 cM. Eleven putative QTLs for LTG were detected, one on each of chromosomes 3–5, 7, 9–11, and four on chromosome 5. The USSR5 alleles in all these QTLs acted to increase LTG. Two QTLs for AG were located on chromosomes 5 and 11, respectively, at both of which the USSR5 alleles acted to increase AG. We propose that USSR5 could make a major contribution to improving LTG and AG in rice breeding programs.  相似文献

Spikelet fertility (seed-set) is an important component of yield that is sensitive to high temperature. The objectives of this research were (a) to quantify the effects of high temperature on spikelet fertility and harvest index of rice; (b) to determine if there were species, ecotype, and/or cultivar differences in response to high temperature; and (c) to understand the reasons for lower and/or differential spikelet fertility and harvest index of rice cultivars at high temperatures. Fourteen rice cultivars of different species (Oryza sativa and Oryza glaberrima), ecotypes (indica and japonica) and origin (temperate and tropical) were exposed to ambient and high temperature (ambient + 5 °C) at Gainesville, Florida. High temperature significantly decreased spikelet fertility across all cultivars, but effects varied among cultivars. Based on decreases in spikelet fertility at high temperature, cultivar N-22 was most tolerant, while cultivars L-204, M-202, Labelle, Italica Livorna, WAB-12, CG-14 and CG-17 were highly susceptible and cultivars M-103, S-102, Koshihikari, IR-8 and IR-72 were moderately susceptible to high temperature. There were no clear species or ecotype differences, as some cultivars in each species or within ecotypes of tropical and temperature origin were equally susceptible to high temperature (for example M-202 temperate japonica, Labelle tropical japonica, CG-14 O. glaberrima, and WAB-12 interspecific). Decreased spikelet fertility and cultivar difference at high temperature were due mainly to decreased pollen production and pollen reception (pollen numbers on stigma). Lower spikelet fertility at elevated temperature resulted in fewer filled grains, lower grain weight per panicle, and decreased harvest index. There is a potential for genetic improvement for heat tolerance, thus it is important to screen and identify heat-tolerant cultivars. Spikelet fertility at high temperature can be used as a screening tool for heat tolerance during the reproductive phase.  相似文献

Twenty-four farinograms and accompanying flour characteristics obtained from a bakery were used to get additional information for baking characteristics of flours. Farinograms were digitized and four novel parameters were included for comparison: a and b were extracted from an equation of the form y = aebt; the height of the upper curve and the width of the farinograph curve at a time value equal to the dough development time. Stepwise multiple regressions were carried out relating bread volume to novel and existing parameters (water absorption, development time, arrival time, departure time, stability and degree of softening). Results indicated that four farinogram parameters, resistance, water absorption, a and b were related to bake height with an overall value of 61%. A relatively weak correlation (R = 0.44, P < 0.05) was detected between specific loaf volume and bake height.  相似文献

The color (L*, a*, b* parameters), the total phenols content and the global chemical composition (moisture, protein, fat, carbohydrates and ash) of four fresh varieties of olive leaves (Chemlali, Chemchali, Zarrazi and Chetoui) were determined. Fresh olive leaves are characterized by a green color (greenness parameter, a*, varying from ?5.01 ± 0.26 to ?9.14 ± 1.21), an intermediate moisture content (0.85 to 1.00 g/g dry matter, i.e. 46 to 50 g/100 g fresh matter) and a variable amount of total phenols according to the olive leaf variety (from ≈2.32 to ≈1.40 g caffeic acid/100 g dry matter).Fresh leaves were submitted to blanching and/or infrared drying at 40, 50, 60 and 70 °C in order to be stabilized by reducing their moisture contents. The impact of IR drying temperature on some quality attributes (color, total phenols and moisture rate removal) was evaluated. Nevertheless, the effect of prior blanching treatment on the quality attributes of dried leaves is less significant and it depends on the olive leaf variety. The infrared drying induces a considerable moisture removal from the fresh leaves (more than 85%) and short drying durations (varying from ≈162 at 40 °C to 15 min at 70 °C). IR drying temperature showed a significant effect of on total phenols content and the color of the leaves whatever the leaf variety. In fact, total phenols content of dried olive leaves increased if compared to fresh ones. For example, total phenols of Chemlali leaves increased from 1.38 ± 0.02 (fresh leaves) to 2.13 ± 0.29 (dried at 40 °C) and to 5.14 ± 0.60 g caffeic acid/100 g dry matter (dried at 70 °C). IR drying allows preserving the greenness color of fresh leaves and enhancing their luminosity. It could be suggested for preserving olives leaves before their use in food or cosmetic applications.  相似文献

Breeding program strategies to develop novel short grain white rice varieties such as japonica (short grain) that introgress biotic stress resistance and high grain quality have been developed using indica rice (Pin Kaset + 4 and Riceberry) for applications in japonica rice (Koshihikari) improvement. Four breeding lines showing promising agronomic performance with short grain and low amylose content (< 20%) were obtained. In addition, sensory testing of these breeding lines showed high scores that similar to Koshihikari. Two promising lines, KP48-1-5 and KP48-1-9, which possessed a combination of four genes resistance to different biotic stresses (Bph3 + TPS + Xa21 + Pi-ta) and four genes for grain quality (GS3 + SSIIa + wxb + badh2), were developed using marker-assisted selection (MAS) with the pedigree method. The current study clearly illustrated the successful use of MAS in combining resistance to multiple biotic stresses while maintaining a high yield potential and preferred grain quality. Moreover, the results indicated that this breeding program, which includes crossing temperate japonica with indica, can create novel short grain rice varieties adapted to a tropical environment, like the japonica type.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) demand of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] can be supplied via biological nitrogen fixation (BNF), however, higher yielding cultivars increase plant demand for N. Phenotypes differing for traits associated with biological nitrogen fixation result from the expression of the multiple genes of both the host plant and the microsymbiont, but limited studies have been done on the genetics of the soybean BNF. Integrated maps of soybean with simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers [Cregan, P.B., Jarvik, T., Bush, A.L., Shoemaker, R.C., Lark, K.G., Kahler, A.L., Kaya, N., Van Toai, T.T., Lohnes, D.G., Chung, J., Specht, J.E., 1999. An integrated genetic linkage map of the soybean genome. Crop Sci. 39, 1464–1491.] offer an excellent opportunity for the identification of traits related to BNF. This study aimed at the identification of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) controlling BNF and nodulation in an F2 population of 160 plants derived from an intraspecific cross between two Brazilian cultivars, Embrapa 20 × BRS 133, previously identified as having good potential for mapping of QTLs [Nicolás, M.F., Arias, C.A.A., Hungria, M., 2002. Genetics of nodulation and nitrogen fixation in Brazilian soybean cultivars. Biol. Fertil. Soils 36, 109–117.]. From 252 SSR markers tested in the parental genotypes 45 were polymorphic with high heterozygotes resolution. Mapping was performed with those 45 SSR markers for nodulation [nodule number (NN) and nodule dry weight (NDW)] and plant growth [shoot dry weight (SDW)] phenotypes in F2:3 lines. A total of 21 SSR loci were mapped with a likehood of odds (LOD) value of 3.0 and a maximum Haldane distance of 50 cM, and were distributed in nine linkage groups with coverage of 251.2 cM. The interval mapping analysis with Mapmaker/QTL revealed two genomic regions associated with NN and NDW, with a contribution of putative QTLs of 7.1 and 10%, respectively. The regression analysis identified 13 significant associations between the marker loci and QTLs due to additive effects, with some of them being significantly associated with more than one phenotypic trait. Effects were observed in all variables studied, ranging from 2 to 9%. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) also detected 13 significant associations, related to dominance effects. A two-way-ANOVA showed six epistatic interactions among non-linked QTLs for SDW, NN and NDW, explaining up to 15% of the trait variation and increasing the phenotypic expression from 8 to 28%. The data obtained in this work establish the initial stage for additional studies of the QTLs controlling BNF and indicate that effective marker-assisted selection using SSR markers may be feasible for enhancing BFN traits in soybean breeding programs.  相似文献

Cuphea (Cuphea viscosissima Jacq. × C. lanceolata W.T. Aiton; PSR23) is a potential new oilseed crop. Its oil is high in medium-chain fatty acids that are suitable for detergent/cleaner applications and also for cosmetics. The objective of this study was to determine the critical temperatures for cuphea seed germination. To determine the base, maximum, and optimum temperatures for seed germination, mature cuphea seeds were harvested from plants grown at Prosper, ND, in 2004, 2005, and 2006. Seeds were germinated on a temperature-gradient bar varying between 5 and 35 °C. Cumulative germination was calculated for each temperature treatment. Base temperature (Tb) and optimum temperature (To) were estimated from the third-order polynomial temperature-response functions for each year. In addition, germination rate per day was used in a linear model to estimate the base temperature below which germination rate was equal to zero (Tb), and the maximum temperature above which germination was equal to zero (Tm). The optimum temperature (To) was calculated as the intercept of sub-optimal and supra-optimal temperature-response functions. Through the third-order polynomial temperature-response functions and the sub-optimal/super-optimal intercept approaches, we were able to generate six estimates for each critical value. Estimates of the base temperature for cuphea seed germination ranged between 3.3 and 11 °C, with the most reliable estimates between 6 and 10 °C, similar to many warm-season crops such as corn (Zea mays L.) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.). The optimum temperature for cuphea seed germination ranged between 18.5 and 24 °C with a mean value of 21 °C. The maximum temperature for seed germination ranged 33–38 °C. On this basis, a cuphea planting date after 20 May is recommended for east-central North Dakota.  相似文献

The development of perennial cultivars (CVs) of upland rice would give farmers a new tool to reduce soil erosion from hilly fields, thereby mitigating a problem of regional concern in Southeast Asia. Oryza longistaminata is an undomesticated, perennial, rhizomatous relative of domesticated Asian rice (Oryza sativa). Using five sets of 4 × 2 factorial mating designs, we crossed rhizomatous interspecific genotypes (IGs) from an intermated O. sativa/O. longistaminata population with male-fertile IG selections from the intermated population, and with O. sativa CVs. Parents and progeny were planted in an upland field at IRRI using a randomized complete block design and evaluated for rhizome expression, survival after 1 year, vigor of the survivors, and yield. For the IG parents, rhizome expression was variable and penetrance of most genotypes was incomplete, but genotypes that demonstrated the potential for moderate rhizome expression had high penetrance (89% average). The CV parents yielded 11.0 g/plant on average but none produced rhizomes or survived 1 year. The IG parents averaged yields of 3.1 g/plant, 57% rhizomatous and 36% survival. The IG/IG progeny averaged yields of 4.2 g/plant, 32% rhizomatous and 37% survival. The IG/CV progeny averaged yields of 6.0 g/plant, 18% rhizomatous and 16% survival. Nine IG/IG progeny and six IG/CV progeny were rhizomatous, perennial, and yielded at least 5 g/plant, and five of these yielded more than 10 g/plant. For the IG parents and IG/IG progeny, rhizome presence and expression were positively associated with survival and vigor of the survivors. General combining ability effects were significant for percent survival and yield but not percent rhizomatous. Specific combining ability effects were significant for percent rhizomatous, percent survival and yield. By selecting female parents for long rhizomes and male parents for fertility, considerable gains in rhizome expression, survival and yield were made. The development of perennial upland rice CVs should be feasible via introgression of genes from O. longistaminata.  相似文献

In this work, the forward extraction of defatted wheat germ protein (DWGP) by reverse micelles was studied. The reverse micellar systems were formed by sulphosuccinic acid bis (2-ethylhexyl) ester sodium salt (AOT), isooctane and KCl solution. The effects of AOT concentration, pH, KCl concentration, extraction time, the amounts of defatted wheat germ flour (DWGF), W0 (the molar ratio of water to surfactant, i.e. W0 = [H2O]/[AOT]) and temperature on the forward extraction efficiency of DWGP were tested. On the basis of single-factor experiments, the optimum extraction was achieved by response surface methodology (RSM). The experimental results lead to the conclusion that the highest forward extraction efficiency of DWGP was reached at the AOT concentration 0.06 g/mL, pH 8, KCl concentration 0.1 mol/L, time 30 min, the amounts of DWGF 0.500 g, W0 25 and temperature 36 °C. Under these conditions, the forward extraction efficiency of DWGP achieved 37%.  相似文献

The lipid profile of nuts from Ximenia caffra and Ricinodendron rautanenii was determined and compared. Although the total oil content of X. caffra and R. rautanenii nuts was similar (47.6 ± 7.5% versus 53.3 ± 13.7%), the fatty acid profiles differed significantly. X. caffra had a higher content (p < 0.05) of saturated fatty acids than R. rautanenii (20.19 ± 1.07% versus 13.87 ± 3.68%) and contained C22:0 and C24:0 which were lacking in R. rautanenii. Total monounsaturated fatty acids were higher in X. caffra than R. rautanenii (71.48 ± 0.99% versus 36.66 ± 1.95%). Oleic acid (C18:1n9) was the major monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) in X. caffra whereas erucic acid (C22:1n9), the major MUFA in R. rautanenii, was undetectable in X. caffra. R. rautanenii had a greater polyunsaturated fatty acid content than X. caffra which contained C18:3n3 (α-linolenic acid) and nervonic acid (24:1n9). X. caffra is potentially an important source of essential fatty acids.  相似文献

Integrated use of organic and inorganic fertilizers can improve crop productivity and sustain soil health and fertility. The present research was conducted to study the effects of application of green manures [sesbania (Sesbania aculeate Poiret) and crotalaria (Crotalaria juncea L.)] and farmyard manure on productivity of rice (Oryza sativa L.) and its residual effects on subsequent groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) crop. Rice and groundnut crops were grown in sequence during rainy and post-rainy seasons with and without green manure in combination with different fertilizer and spacing treatments under irrigated conditions. The results showed that application of green manures sesbania and crotalaria at 10 t ha−1 to rice compared to no green manure application significantly increased grain yield of rice by 1.6 and 1.1 t ha−1, and pod yields of groundnut crop succeeding rice by 0.25 and 0.16 t ha−1, respectively. There was no significant difference between the application of crotalaria or farmyard manure at 10 t ha−1 on grain yields of rice, but pod yields of subsequent groundnut crop were greater with application of green manure. There was no significant effect of different spacing 20×15,15×15,15×10 cm2 (333 000; 444 000; 666 000 plant ha−1, respectively) on grain yield of rice. Pod yields of groundnut were significantly greater with closer spacing 15×15 cm2 (444 000 plants ha−1) as compared to spacing of 30×10 cm2 (333 000 plants ha−1). Maximum grain of rice was obtained by application of 120:26:37 kg NPK ha−1 in combination with green manures, whereas maximum pod yield of groundnut was obtained by residual effect of green manure applied to rice and application of 30:26:33 kg NPK ha−1 in combination with gypsum applied to groundnut crop.  相似文献

Using data from large, grower-managed fields we investigated the variation in yield of dryland soybean in an area with low and variable summer rainfall, and soils that are variable in depth and poor in phosphorus (P). First, using data from unfertilised, wide-row (0.7 m) crops grown under standard management between 1989 and 1992 (Series 1), we quantified the relationship between yield and W, a rainfall-based estimate of water availability during the period of pod and grain set. Separate functions were established for deep (depth  1 m) and shallow soils (0.75 m  depth  0.5 m). Second, we partially tested these functions using two independent data sets (Series 2 and 3). Third, we evaluated the effects on yield of large (18 kg P ha−1, Series 4) or moderate doses of P fertiliser (8–12 kg P ha−1) in narrow-row crops (0.35 m, Series 5). To investigate water × management interaction we (i) calculated ΔY, the difference between actual yield in Series 4 and 5 and yield calculated with the functions derived from Series 1, and (ii) tested the association between ΔY and actual W. In a set of 24 crops (Series 1), yield varied between 2.1 and 3.1 t ha−1 in deep soils and between 1.3 and 2.6 t ha−1 in shallow soils; non-linear functions described fairly well, the response of yield to W. Fertilisation with 18 kg P ha−1 increased yield by 0.6 t ha−1 irrespective of water availability. The combination of narrow rows and a moderate dose of fertiliser increased yield in 73% of crops in deep soil but only in 53% of crops in shallow soil. There was a positive association between ΔY and W in deep soil but no relationship between these variables in shallow soil. Yield responses to management were thus differentially affected by rainfall in deep and shallow soils.  相似文献

The grain yield of normal oil maize (Zea mays L.) might increase when pollinated by high oil maize (HOM) hybrids because of heterosis. To testify that the grain yield increase might be a result of improved photosynthetic rate and related traits, the normal oil maize (NOM) hybrid, Nongda108, was cross-pollinated by three HOM hybrids, HOM202, HOM115 and HOM4515 (for short as ND108pHOM202, ND108pHOM115 and ND108pHOM4515). We found that the ND108pHOM202 and ND108pHOM115 exhibited higher net photosynthetic rate (Pn), accompanied by larger stomatal conductance (gs) and transpiration rate (E). Moreover, delayed leaf senescence was observed in their leaves, including larger leaf area index (LAI) and higher Chl content and Chl a/b ratio. Apart from higher phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPCase) activity, the soluble proteins were also higher in the two cross-pollinations. The higher leaf photosynthesis could explain the grain increase in ND108pHOM202 and ND108pHOM115. However, ND108pHOM4515 exhibited a decreased photosynthetic characteristic and yield performance. Significantly positive relation between grain yield and biomass (r2 = 0.96, P < 0.05), Pn and biomass (r2 = 0.74, P < 0.05) also suggested that the yield increase in the two cross-pollination treatments was generally owing to the higher photosynthetic rate and related photosynthetic traits.  相似文献

Moisture-dependent physical properties of niger (Guizotia abyssinica Cass.) seed were studied at 5.60, 12.99, 19.77, 27.08 and 31.65% moisture content (wet basis). The length, width, thickness and geometric mean diameter increased significantly (p < 0.05) from 3.86 to 4.06 mm, 0.96 to 1.02 mm, 0.86 to 0.96 mm and 1.47 to 1.59 mm, respectively with increase in moisture content from 5.60 to 31.65% whereas the increase in sphericity from 38.10 to 39.01% was not significant. Similarly, thousand seed mass, porosity and angle of repose increased (p < 0.05) linearly from 2.50 to 3.69 g, 41.76 to 47.65% and 29.86° to 39.12°, respectively with increase in moisture content under the experimental condition. The bulk density decreased significantly (p < 0.05) from 635.23 to 561.06 kg m?3 with increase in the moisture content range considered in the study, whereas the true density showed a slight increase from 1090.71 to 1098.42 kg m?3 with increase in moisture content from 5.60 to 27.08% followed by a drop from 1098.42 to 1071.75 kg m?3 as moisture content increased from 27.08 to 31.65%. Coefficient of static friction increased (p < 0.05) logarithmically from 0.34 to 0.51, 0.38 to 0.56 and 0.13 to 0.53 on mild steel, plywood and glass surfaces, respectively with increase in moisture content from 5.60 to 31.65%.  相似文献

Urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA) contributes significantly to meet increasing food demands of the rapidly growing urban population in West Africa. The intensive vegetable cultivation in UPA gardens with its high nutrient inputs is often reported to operate at large surpluses of nutrients and presumably high turnover rates of organic matter (OM) and nitrogen (N) losses via emanation and leaching. Many of these claims are lacking solid data which would allow suggesting mitigation strategies. Therefore, this study aimed at quantifying gaseous emissions of ammonia (NH3), nitrous oxide (N2O), and carbon dioxide (CO2) in three representative urban gardens of Niamey, Niger using a closed chamber gas monitoring system. Mean annual N emissions (NH3-N and N2O-N) in two gardens using river water for irrigation reached 53 and 48 kg N ha?1 yr?1, respectively, while 25 and 20 Mg C ha?1 yr?1 was lost as CO2-C. In the garden irrigated with sewage water from the city's main wadi, N2O was the main contributor to N losses (68%) which together with NH3 reached 92 kg N ha?1 yr?1, while CO2-C emissions amounted to 26 Mg ha?1 yr?1. Our data indicate that 28% of the total gaseous C emissions and 30–40% of the N emissions occur during the hot dry season from March to May and another 20–25% and 10–20% during the early rainy season from June to July. Especially during these periods more effective nutrient management strategies in UPA vegetable gardens should be applied to increase the nutrient use efficiency in UPA vegetable gardens.  相似文献

Fertility barriers, which are common in many wide crosses, can hinder efforts to introgress genes. In this study, we examined an intermated Oryza sativa/Oryza longistaminata population and assessed how fertility barriers affected selection for long rhizomes, a polygenic trait. Rhizomes are typical of O. longistaminata but not found in O. sativa. In the intermate population, we observed that pollen-fertility and self-fertility were generally low but exceptional individuals of high fertility were found in nearly all generations. About 1/5th of the genotypic variation for self-fertility was accounted for by pollen-fertility, based on a significant linear regression. Intermating improved self-fertility more than backcrossing for one generation. Heritability estimates via parent-offspring regression were 17 ± 7% for pollen-fertility and 39 ± 9% for self-fertility. The data indicated that many genes contributed to the fertility barriers. Individuals with relatively high fertility or long rhizomes (>8 cm) were observed infrequently in the intermated population, and there was no evidence of association between low fertility and presence of long rhizomes. By evaluating a large population, we were able to obtain a few rare recombinants that had both self-fertility greater than 10% and long rhizomes.  相似文献
