The establishment and growth of white clover (cv. Grasslands Huia) was investigated in two experiments with seeds sown in slots cut in old permanent pasture in early May 1982. In the first experiment, fully protected from pests and diseases, either 50 (low), 100 (medium) or 200 (high) seeds were sown evenly per metre length of slot; 100 seeds were also sown in a clumped pattern unevenly. In the second experiment, the effects of various combinations of molluscicide, insecticide and fungicide were investigated.
Nine weeks after sowing there were 27, 37, 34 and 62 seedlings m−1 on the low, medium even, medium uneven and high seed-rate treatments, representing percentage establishments of 54, 37, 34 and 31 respectively. By September, however, there were no significant differences between the dry weights m−l of any of the treatments. In the second experiment, damage by slugs occurred early in treatments without molluscicide and caused a mean reduction of 70% in seedling establishment. As a result significantly smaller dry weights m−1 of clover were recorded in September in these than in other treatments. Failure to protect against insects resulted in smaller seedlings.
The results indicated that variations in seed rate within the range investigated were not critical but that failure to protect against pests decreased percentage establishment and subsequent growth.  相似文献

Small plots of a Festuca-Agrostis upland sward on a peaty gley podsol were strip-seeded during late June 1986 with white clover cvs Aberystwyth S184 or Menna at 4 kg ha−1 and defoliated early (20 August) or late (3 September) and then frequently or infrequently (every 2 weeks or 4 weeks) until the end of September. All plots were defoliated in early November, at 3-weekly intervals during the growing season in 1987 and then grazed rotationally during 1988.
Satisfactory seedling establishment, representing 46% emergence, was achieved 5 weeks after sowing. The differential defoliation regimes had no persistent significant effects on clover development. S184 soon produced more leaves per seedling than Menna and a smaller proportion of its leaf number and weight were removed at each defoliation. Following large losses of leaves over the 1986–87 winter, SI84 had significantly more leaves per stolon than Menna; subsequently it also colonized the sward at a quicker rate. During 1987 amounts of herbage harvested (6.1 t ha−1) were similar with the two clover cultivars, with S184 contributing 47% and Menna 44% of this respectively. SI84 made a larger contribution to yield during May and June but Menna was more productive during September and October. During 1988 clover populations were maintained with rotational grazing without additional fertilizer inputs.
The results show that, despite initial soil and climatic contraints, both small and medium-leaved clovers can be strip-seeded into upland swards with large subsequent benefits to yield and herbage quality. However, they also indicate the need for further experiments to determine the influence of sward morphology and defoliation regime on stolon branching rates and accumulation of growing points which, in turn, govern sward colonization.  相似文献

The effects of delayed emergence of white clover (cv. Grasslands Huia) seedlings, following slot-seeding during spring and early summer 1983, were simulated by sowing seeds at intervals into slots cut in turves of permanent grassland in soil-filled tanks or in the field. The resulting spread and growth of the species were assessed during the following 15–18 months. The effects of propyzamide, a grass-suppressing herbicide (at 0·2 kg ha-1), were also investigated in the field.
A delay of 10 or 18 days in the sowing of seeds in turves in the tanks reduced clover dry weight yield from 23 to 11 during 1983 and from 118 to 96 g (0·12 m)-2 during 1984. Spread of stolons from the slots was also greatly delayed and effects persisted for at least a year. Increased clover growth on the earliest sown treatment more than compensated for a slightly smaller yield of grass.
In the field, yields of clover from late summer 1983 until spring 1984 closely reflected the order of emergence. Afterwards, differences were less clear-cut but the cumulative yield of clover until August 1984 of the earliest-sown treatment was twice that of a treatment sown 20 d later. Effects of delayed sowing in summer 1983 were more pronounced on stolons than on foliage growth when measured in September 1984, with significant reductions in many stolon attributes even with 8 d delay in sowing. Application of propyzamide in autumn 1983 increased clover yield during 1984 from 1·7 to 3·0 and total herbage yield from 7·1 to 8·6 t ha-1.
The results demonstrated some of the benefits of rapid seedling emergence and of the use of a grass-suppressing herbicide, but did not indicate any interaction between the two factors.  相似文献

Plots of white clover ( Trifolium repens ) and perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ) white clover were sown with and without fungicide seed treatment, seed treatment with Cytozyme (a proprietary growth-promoting agent) and pesticide granules (carbofuran or carbosulfan) mixed with the seed. Sowings were made in April/May at Hurley (1986 and 1987), Dorchester (1987) and Bronydd Mawr (1987). Only treatments containing pesticide significantly improved seedling emergence or herbage yield in the 1986 sowing. In 1987, pesticide greatly increased seedling emergence of ryegrass and clover at Hurley and Dorchester, but had no effect at Bronydd Mawr. At Hurley, herbage yield and the proportion of clover were more than doubled for up to a year, by chemical treatment after sowing in 1986.
Populations of plant parasitic nematodes were recorded at all sites and it is suggested that at Hurley and Dorchester seedlings with nematode damage were unable to survive the dry soil conditions that prevailed. In a subsequent pot experiment, pesticide granules controlled root endoparasitic nematodes and significantly increased seedling emergence of white clover in dry soil but had no effect in moist soil.  相似文献

The effect of applying 100kg P ha-1 per year in the form of triple superphosphate to mixed swards of perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ) and white clover ( Trifolium repens ) was examined on a soil of low P status.
The dry matter yield of total herbage was increased by 10'/i by added P. In the year of sowing the ryegrass benefited more than the clover from added P: in the subsequent four years the two species benefited equally. Both species responded 10 added P to a similar extent in terms of leaf size; the clover responded less well than the ryegrass in terms of rate of leaf emergence. However, clover responded positively to added P in terms of stolon internode length, length of stolon per m2 and number of growing points per m2. It is suggested that the application of P may promote the spread of white clover within an open sward, but that its application may not enhance the competitive power of white clover when growing with vigorous grasses.

Plants of two contrasting white clover varieties (cv. Aberystwyth S184 and Olwen) were planted in the field in spring in each of 2 years at four densities (9, 25, 49 and 100 plants m−2) in 1-m2 plots. The effect of plant density on stolon growth and development and the components of seed yield was subsequently measured.
Stolon growth and development was influenced by plant density, variety and year. At low plant densities both white clover varieties produced longer primary stolons than at higher densities. Plant density, however, had no significant effect on the number of inflorescences at harvest. At the high stolon densities there were significantly fewer reproductive nodes per primary stolon than at the lower plant densities. Plant density did not significantly affect any other seed yield components, but the number of inflorescences at harvest, florets per inflorescence, seed set per floret and 1000-seed weight were all significantly influenced by both variety and year.
The relationship between the vegetative and reproductive growth of white clover is discussed in relation to plant density, variety and climate and the possible role of defoliation managements on inflorescence development.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of light, seed burial depth, and flooding on germination, emergence and growth of Ludwigia hyssopifolia. Germination was strongly stimulated by light, suggesting that seeds of this species are positively photoblastic. Seeds sown on the soil surface gave the greatest percentage of seedling emergence in plastic trays, and no seedlings emerged from seeds buried in soil at depths of ≥1 cm. Intermittent or shallow flooding suppressed emergence and growth of L. hyssopifolia. Flooding to a depth of 2 cm for 4 days out of 7 days reduced seedling emergence by more than 71% and seedling dry matter by 97% compared to where the soil had not been flooded. Flooding up to a depth of 10 cm however, when delayed to 21 days after sowing, did not significantly suppress growth of this species. This study illustrates the role of seed burial by tillage and flooding as two important tools for the management of L. hyssopifolia.  相似文献

The effects of different defoliation regimes on the growth and development of three contrasting white clover cultivars (S184, Menna and Alice) were assessed in three experiments in the glasshouse. Experiment 1, with clover growing on its own, investigated the effects of three times of onset × two intensities of defoliation. In Experiment 2, clover was grown with grass and there were two times of onset × two heights × two frequencies of defoliation. Experiment 3, also with grass, investigated the effects of changing defoliation frequency at different intervals from sowing. All clover cultivars responded similarly to the various treatments and there were no interactions between time of onset and subsequent defoliation regimes in Experiments 1 and 2. Without competition from grass (Experiment 1), defoliating early at the three leaf-stage of clover decreased the number of growing points by 32% and stolon weights and lengths by 50% compared with delaying defoliation until the nine leaf-stage. Maintaining one compared with two leaves per growing point had similar effects. Over 17 weeks undefoliated seedlings produced ten times more stolon than early defoliated or intensively defoliated seedlings. In competition with grass (Experiment 2) delaying defoliation significantly decreased all aspects of stolon growth. Seedlings growing in swards defoliated frequently and closely had most growing points whereas those defoliated infrequently had least. Stolon lengths and weights were larger for seedlings growing in swards defoliated frequently than for those defoliated infrequently at both heights of cutting. Mean weight of stolon per unit length was greater when swards were defoliated at 6 cm than at 2 cm height. Changing defoliation from every 2 weeks to every week (Experiment 3) decreased stolon growth slightly when the change was made early but increased it when the change was made late, although similar amounts of stolon were produced by seedlings continuously defoliated throughout every week and every 2 weeks. The results are discussed in relation to the seedlings' leaf complements and growth habit; the over-riding influence of grass competition is highlighted. The possibility of devising optimal defoliation strategies and the need to test these in the field are also outlined.  相似文献

Seven cultivars of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) (Kent, S184, Huia, Menna, Donna, Alice and Nesta) and a commercial mixture, ‘Ensign’, were strip-seeded into an upland perennial rye-grass (Lolium perenne L.) sward in late June 1986. Swards were first grazed by sheep, either on 5/6 August (early) or on 19/20 August (late) and then every 14–21 days (frequently) or 28–42 days (infrequently) during 1986, followed by a common grazing regime in 1987. During April to mid-June 1988 the swards received either a moderate amount of nitrogen or none and were cut frequently or once only in mid-June. Growth of individual seedlings was assessed before and after grazing during 1986 and stolon accumulation and distribution and sward colonization were assessed during 1987 and 1988. All cultivars emerged rapidly and satisfactorily and there were no consistent significant differences in the overall dry matter accumulation per seedling during establishment. During the first autumn the proportion of the aboveground biomass removed during grazing was smallest in Kent (c. 20%) and largest in Nesta (c. 40%). Kent and S184 produced most leaves and stolons and the greatest length of stolons per seedling and per individual stolon, and Nesta and Alice the fewest leaves and stolons and shortest stolons. Seedlings grazed early had heavier and longer stolons than those grazed late; those grazed frequently had more leaves, stolons and growing points than those grazed infrequently, especially following early grazing. During 1987 Kent and S184 had consistently the largest number of stolon growing points, and weight and length of stolons per unit area; these two cultivars and Nesta also colonized the sward more rapidly than the other cultivars. All cultivars contributed substantially and similarly to herbage production in late September. There were no residual effects of the 1986 treatments after the summer of 1987. During 1988 additions of nitrogen fertilizer at 100 kg N ha-1 or allowing the herbage to remain undefoliated between mid-April and mid-June both independently halved the number of stolon growing points per unit area; together they reduced it by 80%. Nitrogen also, on average, halved stolon weights but less so in Nesta, Alice and Huia and more so in all other cultivars. Infrequent defoliation greatly decreased stolon weights in Kent and S184 but had no significant effects on the other cultivars. Sward colonization was almost complete by June and entirely so by October for all cultivars in all treatments. Implications of the results for the after-management of strip-seeded white clover are discussed.  相似文献

Three white clover cultivars, S184 (small-leaved), Menna (medium-leaved) and Olwen (large-leaved), were broadcast or sown in 15, 30 or 60 cm drills at a seed rate of 3 kg ha-1. The three cultivars were either sown without a cover-crop or sown under a cover-crop of spring barley (cv. Crescent) or peas (cv. Countess). The effects of these methods of establishment on the stolon growth and components of seed yield were subsequently measured.
Stolon growth and development was influenced by row spacing, cultivar and season. The overall plant response at all but the widest row spacing (60 cm) was to increase stolon growth such that inflorescence production, the number and proportion of ripe inflorescences and the other seed yield components were unaffected by row spacing. Cultivars differed in their response to row spacing. Cultivar Olwen produced most inflorescences and more ripe inflorescences when broadcast, cv. S184 when sown at 60 cm row spacing and cv. Menna at 15 or 30 cm row spacing. Cultivars also differed in their response to cover-crop, with cvs Menna and S184 producing more inflorescences and more ripe inflorescences when sown under barley and peas than when pure sown. The inflorescence production of cv. Olwen was not influenced by cover-crop.
The relationship between vegetative and reproductive growth is discussed in relation to establishment, cultivar and climate and the possible implications for the establishment of white clover seed crops in the UK.  相似文献

Inconsistent seedling establishment is a constraint to the adoption of direct seeding of lowland rice (Oryza sativa L.) in the tropics. Rice cultivars with superior seedling establishment in flooded soil have been recently identified. The establishment of these tolerant cultivars was compared with a control cultivar with and without calcium peroxide-coated seed under various combinations of water level and sowing depth. Water level had little effect on seedling establishment when seed were sown on the soil surface, but establishment was reduced by raising the water level when seed were sown below the soil surface. Calcium peroxide-coated seed established better than the tolerant cultivars at 13- and 25-mm sowing depths, but their seedlings were shorter and less vigorous than those of tolerant cultivars. Tolerant cultivars and coated seed had longer mesocotyls than controls. Sowing tolerant cultivars beneath a flooded soil surface at less than 13 mm assists achievement of consistent seedling establishment in lowland rice production.  相似文献

A field experiment with mixed swards of perennial ryegrass and while clover carded out in 1982–83 using small cut plots is described. With perennial ryegrass, lime slightly decreased annual dry matter (DM) production in 1982 (the sowing year) but increased it in 1983 (the first harvest year) by about 1 t ha-1. Applications of N and P produced small increases in DM in 1982 and greater increases in 1983. In the latter season annual DM production varied from an average of 3·5 to about 10 t ha-1 with 0 or 480 kg N ha-1 applied in three equal-sized dressings throughout the growing season. Application of 40 kg P ha-1 in 1982 increased DM production by about 2·5 t ha-1 in 1983 but higher rates had little effect. Fifteen mg extractable P kg-1 soil seemed sufficient to support levels of production normally expected from ryegrass pastures in upland Scotland, Applications of K did not affect DM production. N increased tiller weight and sward height of ryegrass; lime and P tended to increase tiller weight but this effect was not statistically significant. Leaf appearance and tiller number were not affected by treatments.
The white clover content of the pasture was decreased 10-fold by application of N and increased by lime and P (1·45 and 1·46-fold. respectively). The DM response to P was most apparent in limed soil and was also affected by the siting of the plots in the experimental area. Effects of lime and P on growth of white clover were to increase the number of stolon growing points and root nodule numbers per unit area.
The results emphasize the importance of lime and P fertilizer for establishment and growth of pasture in this soil and the differences between white clover and ryegrass in their responses to these.  相似文献

The influences of cultivar, depth of sowing, and time between pre-irrigation and sowing, on rice crop establishment were investigated by drilling into moist soil during the dry season in N.W. Australia. As the time between pre-irrigation and sowing increased, median seedling emergence was delayed, and spread of the population's emergence rate and final percentage emergence decreased, particularly for shallow sowing depths. Delayed sowing also resulted in less-vigorous growth of some seedlings. Stomatal conductance was generally lowest in seedlings emerged from shallow depths although leaf-air temperature differentials and measurements of stomatal conductance, usually regarded as reliable indices of plant water status, failed to distinguish between cultivars or sowing treatments.Delaying sowing, with attendant cultivation, for more than 10 days after pre-irrigation resulted in negligible weed populations. The tall, vigorous-growing cultivar Pelde (ex N.S.W.), sown at 6–8 cm depth between 10 and 15 days after pre-irrigation reached sufficient height for permanent flooding within 50 days after sowing. A semi-dwarf cultivar IR661-1-170-1-3 (ex IRRI) proved more sensitive to depth and time of sowing following irrigation; because of its slower growth rate and additional irrigation requirements it was less adapted to this method of establishment.  相似文献

Three legumes, red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.), were planted with a minimum-tillage drill into eight grass fields, three in early spring, two in late spring and three in late summer, in Pennsylvania. The objective was to use pesticides at planting time to control slugs and insects which attack legume seedlings and ascertain whether pest control prevented seedling loss and increased yields of grass and legume dry matter (DM), in vitro DM digestibility and crude protein (CP). Methiocarb bait alone or in combination with carbofuran granules or spray applied at planting sometimes controlled the slugs Derocerus reticulatum (Müller), D. laeve (Müller) and Arion fasciatus Nilsson and improved establishment of seedling red clover and alfalfa but not birdsfoot trefoil. Increased yields of DM, digestible DM, CP and legume DM after treatment was greatest in late-spring sowings. Larvae of the clover root curculio, Sitona hispidulus (F.), attacked roots of legumes in the spring following the year of sowing. Late spring and summer sowings without pesticides sustained considerable seedling losses from pests, whereas seedlings from early spring sowings in untreated areas were injured less.  相似文献

Ryegrass and white clover were sown singly or in combination at various seeding rates by direct drilling into plots in which a range of slug densities had been established by molluscicide baiting. For both ryegrass and white clover, weights of individual seedlings and numbers and yields of seedlings per metre of drill row were significantly affected by slug density, ryegrass seed rate, clover seed rate and interactions of these factors. Plant losses increased asymptomatically with slug density, indicating higher rates of seedling destruction per slug at low slug densities.  相似文献

Under mowing conditions in the absence of the animal, ultra-simple swards based either on ryegrass or cocksfoot gave large increases in yield of dry matter and nitrogen from the inclusion of white clover in the seeds mixture. Raising the clover seed rate from 1 to 3 lb./acre gave a further response in yield.
As the swards aged, the continuing effect of increased clover seed rate was dependent on applied nitrogen.
The rate of transference of nitrogen from clover to the soil depended upon the species of the associated grass, the clover seed rate, the age of the sward and the degree of reduction of the clover in the sward.
Suppression of clover led to an increase in soil nitrogen, particularly with high seed rates of clover.
Dry matter response to applied nitrogen (69 lb./acre/annum) was greater in cocksfoot than in ryegrass. Fertilizer nitrogen had little effect on the yield of nitrogen from the sward except where the high seed rate of clover had been used.  相似文献

A trial was carried out over two harvest years to assess the effect of sheep grazing and closing date on stolon density and seed yield components of two contrasting white clover varieties and to determine the potential for producing clover seed from mixed swards in an integrated livestock/seed production system.
Overall, the small-leaved cv. S184 had a higher stolon density at closing and harvest than the large-leaved cv. Olwen, but only significantly so in 1987. Stolon density at closing was generally increased by delaying closing. Varieties also differed in their response to closing date. Stolon density of cv. S184 in both harvest years, generally increased with later closing whilst cv. Olwen was less influenced by closing date and at all dates in 1987, and all but one date in 1986 was not significantly different from the ungrazed treatment.
Delay of closing significantly increased stolon density at harvest on all closing dates in 1987 but had no effect in 1986. Varieties responded similarly to a delay in closing but the magnitude of increase of cv. Olwen was less than that of cv. S184.
The seed yield components of both cv. S184 and cv. Olwen were influenced by closing date, but the effect differed between years. Although there was some initial increase in inflorescence production, delaying closing after inflorescence buds appeared on the stolon reduced inflorescence number of cv. Olwen in both years but reduced inflorescence number in cv. S184 in 1986 only. However, inflorescence size, seed yield per inflorescence and the proportion of ripe inflorescences at harvest was reduced in both years. Cultivar S184 produced more inflorescences than cv. Olwen in both years and in both years tolerated later closing than cv. Olwen.
The effect of sheep grazing and closing date is discussed in relation to stolon removal and the suitability of particular leaf types for this system of seed production.  相似文献

Among the many problems of pasture establishment in Rhodesia, those which appear the most serious are: (a) poor seed germination, leading to patchy and weak seedling growth; (b) erratic rainfall, in which heavy storms are followed by hot, dry periods; (c) soil crusting, which forms a surface layer impenetrable from below by the seedling, and from above by rainwater; (d) weed competition, where rank and copious weed growth suppresses establishment of pasture seedlings. Suggestions are made as to how these problems might be overcome.  相似文献
