1. The performance of brown egg laying hens was compared under conventional and asymmetrical interrupted-lighting conditions. 2. Egg numbers and mean weight were similar under the two conditions, provided the apparent day perceived by the hen was the same under both lighting treatments. 3. Daily food intakes of intermittently-illuminated hens were not significantly lower than those of conventionally-lit birds. However, the reductions were of the magnitude reported in the literature and observed under commercial conditions. 4. Shell quality was unaffected by interrupted lighting in the period up to 60 weeks of age in two of the 4 genotypes studied. All breeds had lower shell weights under interrupted lighting in the last three months of lay. 5. Intermittently-lit hens had lower body weights, which approached significance, and significantly less carcase fat. There were no differences in ash, protein (N x 6.25) or water contents of the carcases, or in fat content at a given body weight. 6. There were no significant differences in the production responses of the 4-brown-egg hybrids to interrupted lighting. 7. Diets with differing concentrations of energy and protein were included in both trials, but there was no evidence of interaction between these nutritional treatments and the lighting treatments.  相似文献

Segmentation of the main light period of an 8L:4D:2L:10D regimen into 30 min light, 30 min dark did not affect total feeding activity, rate of feeding or total intake of laying hens. When 15 min light and 45 min dark was provided each hour feeding activity and food intake were reduced, while rate of feeding and feeding during the dark periods increased. No feeding occurred in the 10 h 'night'. Hens subjected to interrupted lighting showed less feeding activity than those on a 14L:10D regimen. Insertion of a 4 h dark period in the 14 h subjective day of laying hens increased their rate of feeding, but reduced total intake. The pattern of feeding activity depended on the position of the 4 h dark period. The largest modification of feeding activity occurred on a 8L:4D:2L:10D regimen; 20% of activity occurred in the last 2 h of the apparent day. Feeding occurred during the 4 h dark period, but not during the 10 h 'night'.  相似文献

1. Noise output from domestic hens subjected to an interrupted lighting regimen began before dawn of the apparent day. 2. Noise output did not cease during the scotoperiod(s) which interrupted the apparent day. 3. Differential noise outputs during the 30 min. 4 h and 10 h scotoperiods of a 1L:7(30D:30L):4D:2L:10D regimen indicated that the hen's interpretation of darkness, even within the apparent day, was complex and probably dependent on several factors. 4. Noise output data suggested that the intense feeding behaviour at the end of the apparent day, effected by the interrupted lighting regimen, appeared to prevent the pre-dusk reduction in activity observed in conventionally lighted birds. 5. Noise output was negligible during the scotoperiod which the hen interpreted as night.  相似文献

1. The energy expenditure (H) and physical activity of laying hens were measured under lighting regimes of 14L:10D (standard), 2L:10D:2L:10D (interrupted) and (15 X (13 min L:47 min D]: 9D (fragmented). 2. Neither of the intermittent regimes produced a significant change in total daily energy expenditure, although large alterations occurred in the distribution of H between the lighting phases. The absence of change in total H resulted from the combined effects of greater H in the light in the intermittent regimes, greater H in darkness during the interrupted day than at night and slightly greater H at night in the intermittent regimes. 3. Physical activity count, like H, was redistributed over time but, unlike H, was also significantly reduced in total; changes in the energy cost of unit activity, however, were such that no reduction occurred in the total amount of H attributable to activity. 4. In the standard groups, 90% of total activity costs were incurred in the light; in the fragmented-day and interrupted-day groups, respectively, 7% and 55% of total activity costs were incurred in the light periods and 85% and 30% in daytime darkness. 5. In terms of both H and activity, there was clear differentiation between night darkness and subjective-day darkness. 6. Even when the energy cost of activity was excluded, significant differences remained between H at night, H in the light and H in daytime darkness.  相似文献

The Cornell (8L:10D:2L:4D) and (Ralston Purina) Biomittent lighting programmes were applied to a commercial strain of White Leghorn laying hens from 20 to 64 weeks of age. 2. The egg production of hens exposed to the Cornell lighting was reduced compared to the Bio-mittent programme. 3. Food consumption was less and efficiency of utilisation significantly improved for the Cornell programme during phase I (20 to 36 weeks) of the study. Significant differences were not observed during phase II (37 to 64 weeks) or for the whole cycle (20 to 64 weeks). 4. Body weights were significantly greater for hens exposed to the Bio-mittent programme during both phases I and II. 5. Egg weights, egg mass and egg weight distributions were not different for hens exposed to the 2 programmes. 6. Food costs and the margin of income over food costs were significantly in favour of the Cornell programme during phase I. However, differences for phase II and the complete cycle were not significant. 7. The Bio-mittent programme offered a computed advantage of 14.4% fewer hours of light usage compared to the Cornell programme.  相似文献

1. Two hundred and sixty four dwarf broiler breeder hens were subjected to ad libitum or restricted feeding and to four lighting patterns: 15L (bright light):9D (dark), 15L:9d (dim light), 2L:10d: 1L:11d, (0.5L:3.5d) × 6.

2. Breeder hens fed ad libitum and subjected to either conventional or intermittent lighting ingested respectively, 25 g and 14 to 17 g more than hens restricted to 115 g/d.

3. Body weight was greater in hens fed ad libitum irrespective of the lighting pattern and of the amount of food intake.

4. Persistency of egg production was impaired by intermittent lighting.

5. Ad libitum feeding reduced egg fertility. The decrease was larger in breeder hens on intermittent lighting.

6. Hatchability was increased in hens submitted to the symmetrical lighting pattern (0.5L:3.5d).

7. Egg and chick weights were higher in hens fed ad libitum.

8. Shell index and shell breaking strength increased in restricted hens on the intermittent lighting pattern (0.5L:3.5d) × 6.

9. The best performance was obtained in restricted hens on the conventional lighting pattern.  相似文献

The body weight, carcase composition and component energy concentrations of laying hens were determined under 17L:7D and 2L:4D:8L:10D lighting regimens.

2. Hens subjected to 2L:4D:8L:10D lighting had lower body weights at end of lay and during most of the laying year, than the 17L:7D control birds.

3. Intermittently illuminated hens had similar absolute water, crude protein and ash contents to, but more water on a proportional basis than, controls.

4. Hens subjected to the 2L:4D:8L:10D lighting regimen had significantly less fat, in both absolute and proportional terms, than the controls.

5. There were no significant differences between the energy concentrations of the fat or fat‐free components of the two lighting groups.

6. There was no significant difference in the regression of fat content on body weight at end of lay for the intermittently and conventionally‐illuminated birds.

7. A prediction of the difference in daily energy requirement, based on egg output, body weight and mean daily body weight gain, very closely matched the actual difference in energy intake. This suggested that the more efficient food utilisation of intermittently‐illuminated hens could be explained by the lower body weight gain of these birds.  相似文献

1. Two experiments were conducted to provide further evidence about rate of lay under the Cornell lighting system (2L:4D:8L:10D). Each used 1728 hens of each of 2 brown-egg stocks in 12 light-proof rooms. 2. In the first the Cornell system was compared at 2 light intensities (average values 2 and 10 lux) with a conventional step up lighting programme. In the second, Cornell lighting was introduced at 18, 21 or 24 weeks of age and compared with a step up programme. 3. Total egg output was essentially the same from the Cornell lighting system, using 10 h light/d, as from the step up programme using 16 h/d. When the Cornell system was applied abruptly at 18 weeks to pullets which had been reared on short days (8L:16D) sexual maturity was advanced, resulting in an increase in mean rate of lay to 72 weeks of age and a reduction in mean egg size. Application of the Cornell system from 21 or 24 weeks gave the same egg numbers and the same egg size as the step up programme. 4. Food intake was about 2% lower with the Cornell treatment in both experiments. Although this difference was not quite significant in either, it probably reflects a real effect of the reduced hours of light. It represents a greater potential cost saving than the reduced electricity consumption. 5. Birds in rooms with an average light intensity of 2 lux laid slightly fewer eggs but their eggs were 0.5 g heavier than those laid in rooms maintained at 10 lux. There were no interactions between light intensity and light pattern or between stocks and light pattern.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

(1) This study was to determine the effects of two lighting programmes (continuous--24L:0D or intermittent--12L:3(1L:3D)), two feeding programmes (continuous--ad libitum or meal Jeeding--3 h feed:3 h deprivation x 4 times per d) and two ascorbic acid (AA) supplementations (0 or 150 mg/l in water) on broiler performance and incidence of tibial dyschondroplasia (TD). (2) One-day-old male commercial (Ross PM3) broiler chicks (1600) were used. The chicks were randomly divided into 8 treatment groups (2 x 2 x 2) and their replicates (2) replicates per treatment). (3) Intermittent lighting increased body weight and improved feed conversion. Body weight of broilers was decreased by meal feeding. AA supplementation had no significant effect on the body weight and feed conversion ratio. There was no lighting x feeding x supplemental AA interaction for body weight, feed conversion ratio, mortality rate and carcase weight. (4) Supplemental AA improved the cortical thickness of tibiotarsus and decreased the incidence of TD. (5) It was concluded that the application of intermittent lighting in combination with supplementation of 150 mg/l AA is a useful method to reduce TD in broilers without loss of performance.  相似文献

1. Two intermittent lighting systems for laying hens are: the Biomittent system, using an asymmetric pattern of 0.25L:0.75D for 16 h followed by 8D, which entrains oviposition to 24 h cycles and, compared with standard lighting programmes, gives the same egg number and egg size but a smaller feed cost, and a symmetrical system (4[3L:3D]) which allows intervals between ovipositions to stretch, giving bigger eggs with thicker shells, but yielding fewer eggs and achieving no saving in food intake.

2. A new system was devised to combine the increased egg size and shell thickness, characteristic of symmetrical intermittent lighting programmes, with the reduction in food intake which is a feature of programmes that reduce total activity time. The pattern tested was 24(0.25L:0.75D).

3. The results of 2 trials showed that this new system gives about 2% fewer eggs than conventional (Step Up) or Biomittent lighting with a 2% increase in mean egg size and a 3% improvement in shell thickness at the end of the laying year. Feed consumption with the new system was similar to that under Biomittent lighting and 6% lower than that recorded for Step Up lighting.

4. Mortality was lower with the new system than with Step Up lighting, but not significantly so. From the evidence of other trials it is argued that intermittent lighting programmes which provide less than 8 h total illumination in 24 h generally reduce laying house mortality and may be regarded as beneficial to the welfare of the hen.  相似文献

Three lighting treatments were given to laying hens, for which the bright and dim light of 28-h ahemeral light cycles was provided by incandescent (tungsten filament) lamps only or by combinations of tubular fluorescent or compact gas-discharge lamps with incandescent lamps. There were no differences in entrainment (the proportion of eggs laid in 4, 6 or 8 h modal periods) between the three bright:dim treatments. A fourth ahemeral lighting treatment in which the dim lights were extinguished except during a designated work period (09.00 h to 12.00 h daily) was termed bright:dim:dark. Hens given the bright:dim:dark treatment showed an increased entrainment compared with the three bright:dim light treatments. There were no differences (P greater than 0.05) in egg numbers or mean egg weight between all 4 lighting treatments. Birds given the bright:dim:dark treatment tended to have a lower (P greater than 0.05) food intake compared to the three bright:dim treatments.  相似文献

1. Energy balance of adult hens divergently selected for high (R + ) or low (R- ) residual food consumption was investigated using indirect calorimetry. Three experiments were conducted: feeding behaviour of individual hens, hens having free access to food or fasting and hens tube-fed at 70, 100 or 130% of the control intake of both lines. 2. R + hens ate significantly more than R- (+ 48%). This difference was maximum at the onset of the light (+ 120%) and not significant during the rest of the light period. Although both lines spent the same total time eating, R + hens exhibited more frequent but shorter meals than R- ones, suggesting a higher feeding activity in R + hens. 3. True metabolisable energy (TME) intake was 28% greater in R+ than in R- birds. Basal heat production did not differ significantly between genotypes. Heat increment of feeding (HI) or diet-induced thermogenesis was significantly enhanced in R + birds: + 23.9 vs 13.7 kJ/100 kJ TME intake in R- . 4. When tube-fed and placed in darkness, restricted-fed R + hens had the same HI as R- birds. When fed at 100% and 130% of control intake, R + hens demonstrated a regulatory thermogenesis, which allowed them to dissipate the excess of energy ingested compared to R- hens. 5. No significant modification was observed in plasma triglyceride, phospholipid, uric acid, glucose or insulin concentrations between lines, suggestive of the use of similar thermogenic pathways. While plasma triiodothyronine (T3) concentrations did not differ between genotypes, plasma thyroxine (T4) appeared higher in unfed R + birds and equal in fed conditions in both lines. 6. A regulatory part of HI allowed R + hens to get rid of their excessive energy intake. An increased turnover of lipids could be involved.  相似文献

1. Two short-term trials are described in which laying hens were exposed to 8 h light followed by 8 one-min pulses of light at hourly intervals followed by 8 h darkness (8L:8i:8D). The effect of varying the intensity of illumination during the one-min pulses and the effect of placing the intermittent lighting before the 8 h photoperiod (8i:8L:8D), were studied. 2. Normal egg production was maintained by the 8L:8i:8D system when the light pulses were at 20 lux, but not at 5 lux. This suggests a minimum threshold for illumination with short light pulses higher than that needed for continuous lighting. 3. Time of lay under 8L:8i:8D was the same as with 8L:16D in relation to the beginning and ending of the 8 h main photoperiod, but with 8i:8L:8D mean time of lay was 2 to 3 h earlier. Thus the hourly pulses caused a phase advance when placed before the normal photoperiod but did not cause a phase delay when placed after the normal photoperiod.  相似文献

The effects of the growth curve from 15 to 20 weeks, age at photostimulation and pattern of photostimulus on sexual maturity, egg production and egg weight were evaluated in two trials with broiler breeder females to 56 and 34 weeks of age (housed in litter pens and individually caged, respectively). Carcase composition and reproductive morphology of hens varying in laying efficiency were measured in the second trial. Trial 1: Four growth curves were applied from 15 to 20 weeks to pullets housed in litter pens. Birds were transferred from 8- to 10-h photoperiods at 20 or 24 weeks of age, followed by weekly increments of one hour to reach a 16-h final photoperiod. Lower-than-recommended body weights at 20 weeks significantly delayed sexual maturity, reduced peak rate of lay, total eggs and mean egg weight. However, double-yolked egg production was lower, resulting in non-significant differences in settable egg numbers between body weight treatments. Birds reared to the heaviest body weight exhibited a significantly advanced sexual maturity, but total egg numbers, peak rate of lay and mean egg weight were not significantly affected. However, the laying of more double-yolked eggs resulted in a decrease in the number of settable eggs. Delaying photostimulation to 24 weeks significantly retarded sexual maturity, reduced total and settable egg numbers, and increased mean egg weight. A tendency for fewer double-yolked eggs was observed. Trial 2: At 19 weeks, birds were selected from the 4 body weight categories in Trial 1 and moved to individual cages in 8 rooms. Five lighting programmes were applied. The pattern of photostimulation applied did not affect any of the production traits measured. At 34 weeks, 24 birds were selected for the analysis of reproductive morphology, presence of internal or multiple ovulations, and carcase composition. Eight hens showing an early age at first egg and regular egg production records, 8 birds showing erratic laying performance and 8 non-layers were killed for this purpose. There were no differences in carcase composition or reproductive morphology between these groups. No internal ovulations or double or multiple ovarian hierarchies were observed. The results presented confirm that broiler breeders do not require a lighting stimulus in order to initiate ovarian activity and that, where no lighting stimulus is given, body weight or feeding level plays a critical role in stimulating the birds to attain sexual maturity. However, when a lighting stimulus is given, factors such as body weight and body composition become relatively less important in regulating the age at sexual maturity.  相似文献

1. Two experiments are described in which a system of intermittent lighting (15 min light followed by 45 min dark for 15 h, then 15 min light, 30 min dark, 15 min light and 8 h dark) was applied to laying pullets from 37 to 72 weeks of age. A step-up lighting programme was used as a control treatment (8L:16D from 0 to 18 weeks, photoperiod increased by 20 min each week from 18 to 41 weeks, 16L:8D from 41 to 72 weeks of age). 2. Food consumption was reduced by about 5% when intermittent lighting was in use and by 3.8% for the period from 18 to 72 weeks. 3. Rate of lay and egg weight were similar for intermittent lighting and the control treatment, provided that protein content of the diet was adjusted to maintain an adequate amino acid intake. 4. In the second trial 2 stocks, 2 stocking densities confounded with 2 temperatures and 2 types of food trough were used. Each of these factors affected food intake and it was found that more food was saved by intermittent lighting when intake was high and less when it was low. The proportion saved was approximately 5%. 5. Mortality was slightly but not significantly lower in both experiments where intermittent lighting was used. This may indicate that caged pullets are under less stress when intermittent lighting is used.  相似文献

2 rearing trials were carried out on a total of 8550 hybrid chicks (White Leghorn) to investigate in which way food mixtures containing reduced levels of crude protein (supplemented or unsupplemented with amino acids) might influence the growth of chicks and young hens. Decreases from 21.5% to 16.5% in the crude protein content of chicken feed and from 15% to 13% in feeds feed to young hens (greater than 8 weeks of life) did not reduce the live weight of birds at the end of the rearing period to any appreciable extent. No clearly defined differences were found to exist between the different types of feed tested concerning the amount of food and energy consumed per unit of weight gain and the mortality rate among the birds; it was shown, however, that the demand for crude protein per unit of weight gain was clearly reduced in birds reared at the lower crude protein level. For young hens receiving the diet poorer in protein the date when the birds began laying was slightly delayed. Otherwise, no statistically significant differences were found to exist between the young birds fed varying levels of crude protein, concerning the age at 50% laying performance and other parameters that are characteristic of the entire laying period (laying performance, weight of individual eggs, food consumption, mortality, fertilization of hatching eggs, hatchability of eggs). It appears that the feeding of a reduced protein diet to chicks and young hens (laying stock) did not have any detrimental effect on the growth and later laying performance of the birds. Apart from the fact that the demand for protein feeds is considerably reduced during the rearing period the costs of feeding per bird can also be cut down.  相似文献

1. Two experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of dietary flaxseed, flax oil and n-3 fatty acid supplementation (Dry n-3) on hepatic fat content, plasma triglycerides, hepatic haemorrhage score, egg production, food intake and body weight in an inbred line of Single Comb White Leghorns (UCD-003) predisposed to fatty liver haemorrhagic syndrome (FLHS) and normal SCWL hens. 2. Feeding diets containing 100 g/kg ground flaxseed, 40 g/kg flax oil, or 100 g/kg Dry n-3 reduced body weight and significantly reduced hepatic fat content compared to feeding the control diet with animal and vegetable oil as a fat source. 3. Hepatic malondialdehyde, an indicator of lipid peroxidation within the liver, was not significantly affected by dietary treatment. 4. Normal SCWL hens tended to have higher egg production, greater body weight, greater food intake and higher blood triglyceride concentrations than UCD-003 hens, although the strain effects were not significant. Liver weight as a percent of body weight was significantly lower in normal SCWL hens. Treatments by strain interactions were not found. 5. The result suggested that dietary flaxseed, flax oil and Dry n-3 decrease hepatic fat content and reduce body weight, 2 of the predisposing factors believed to contribute to FLHS onset. However, haemorrhages were still apparent in both strains regardless of treatment, indicating that other unknown underlying mechanisms may also be responsible for FLHS.  相似文献

The metabolisable energy (ME) of the diet of laying hens at an ambient temperature (Ta) of 20 degrees C was abruptly changed from 10.9 MJ/kg to 12.9 MJ/kg, or vice versa. Food intake during the next 14 d was significantly reduced by the low ME diet and was increased by the high ME diet, that is, the expected compensatory changes in food intake did not occur. Laying hens given the same change of diet as above but kept at 32 degrees C did not show any change in food intake within 14 d. Thus ME intake increased with the high ME diet and decreased with the low ME diet. Daily doses of 10 ml maize oil/kg body weight given directly into the crop of laying hens at a Ta of 20 degrees C, resulted in an immediate, significant, reduction of food intake such that total ME intake remained the same as with normal feeding. Daily doses of 3 ml maize oil/kg, given as before, resulted in an immediate, significant, reduction in food intake at a Ta of 20 degrees C but at a Ta of 32 degrees C food intake remained unchanged; consequently daily ME intake increased. Loading the crop with glucose or sucrose, at Ta 20 degrees C, in quantities which provided a similar ME as 3 ml maize oil/kg, reduced food intake but the adjustment was less precise and daily ME intake increased. Loading with glycerol or protein hydrolysate decreased both food and ME intake. Crop loads of starch were as effective as maize oil in bringing about a significant and compensatory reduction of food intake. Similar volumes of water or liquid paraffin placed in the crop did not affect food or ME intake. A similar weight or cellulose placed in the crop reduced food and ME intake.  相似文献
