High mortality frequently occurs in larval mass production of Korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli Hilgendorf. Nutritional deficiencies in live feeds, rotifers and Artemia nauplii, fed to larvae could be a reason. A series of experiments was carried out to evaluate the effect of nutritional enrichment of live feeds by ω‐yeast, Spirulina powder and Super SelcoTM on survival and growth rates in rockfish larvae. Preference of rockfish larvae for the live feeds was determined by analysis of stomach contents. In addition, the effect of green water produced by the use of Chlorella ellipsoidea and Spirulina powder on the growth performance of larvae was evaluated. Larvae fed rotifers nutritionally enriched with Super Selco showed significantly higher survival rates than those fed rotifers enriched with ω‐yeast. Larvae fed rotifers that were nutritionally enriched with both Super Selco and Spirulina together exhibited improved growth and survival rates. Larvae fed Artemia nauplii nutritionally enriched with Spirulina powder showed significantly higher survival than larvae fed Artemia nauplii without enrichment. When larvae were fed rotifers, Artemia nauplii or the mixture of rotifers and Artemia nauplii, the second and last group showed significantly higher survival than the first group. Fatty acid composition in live feeds was improved by enrichment of ω‐yeast and larvae fed this feed showed higher survival and growth rates compared with larvae fed non‐enriched feeds. No positive effect of green water in the tank produced with C. ellipsoidea or Spirulina powder was observed on survival and growth rates for larvae fed nutritionally enriched rotifers with Super Selco and Spirulina powder. However, when the larvae were fed Artemia nauplii that were nutritionally enriched with ω‐yeast and Spirulina powder, green water obtained by adding Spirulina powder to the tanks resulted in significantly higher growth rates of larvae than was obtained by adding C. ellipsoidea.  相似文献

Survival, growth (length and weight), development, proximate composition, and energy content of Artemia franciscana fed for 7 days with Isochrysis sp. (TISO) or with Chaetoceros muelleri (CHGRA) were compared to evaluate the food value of these microalgae. Mean daily survival was not significantly different, and ranged from 86% to 93%. Diet‐related differences in growth were noted from the third day, and mean final dry weights (DWs) were 171 and 327 μg ind?1 for Artemia fed TISO and CHGRA respectively. Rates of development were different between diets, with a higher developmental index for Artemia fed TISO before day 3, and a higher index for Artemia fed CHGRA for the rest of the experiment. Chemical analysis showed that carbohydrates decreased to approximately 35% of the initial value in Artemia during the first 24 h, after which they remained approximately stable and similar with both diets. In percentage of total DW, lipids and proteins remained close to their respective initial values, but A. franciscana fed TISO had a higher ash content. A major difference between the two microalgae was the higher protein content of TISO, but this did not result in better growth. Of the two, TISO was richer in docosahexaenoic acid, which might explain the initial faster development, but CHGRA was a better source of eicosapentaenoic acid, which is the most probable explanation of the higher food conversion index, specific growth rate, and energy gain of A. franciscana fed this algae.  相似文献

Growth and health parameters were tested in juvenile New Zealand black‐footed abalone, Haliotis iris, fed nine diets containing different protein sources (white and red fishmeal, blood meal, meat and bone meal, casein, soybean concentrate, wheat gluten, maize gluten, and Spirulina powder) over a 5‐mo period. The growth parameters measured included shell length, total animal weight, and soft body and gonad weights. The health indicators included survival, goblet cell counts, and epithelium thickness of the tentacle region. Proximate analyses and amino acid and fatty acid profiles were also determined on the diets, soft body tissues and shell materials to evaluate the nutrient contents (diet and animal) and requirements (animal). Measurements of soft body, gonad, and shell growth parameters indicated that white and red fishmeals generally result in better growth. Animals fed blood meal had the lowest survival rates and crude protein contents. Spirulina produced animals with the heaviest shells and soybean treatments produced animals with the highest gonad to soft body ratios. Significantly lower acid/basic amino acid ratios were found in fishmeal diets, indicating that animals fed fishmeal may incorporate more aragonite than calcite in their shells.  相似文献

The effect of feeding Spirulina platensis on the growth, carcass composition, organoleptic quality, digestive enzyme activity and digestibility of common carp, Cyprinus carpio L., was studied through a culture trial lasting 120 days. Four experimental diets were employed by replacing fish meal protein from the standard diet at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% through the incorporation of Spirulina. Another diet with Spirulina as the sole source of protein was also used. The final weight gain, specific growth rate, food conversion ratio and protein efficiency ratio of common carp were not affected by Spirulina supplementation. However, the diet with Spirulina as the sole source of protein resulted in better net protein retention. The muscle RNA:DNA ratio of fish fed Spirulina diets was higher than that of fish fed control diet. There was no significant difference in carcass moisture and protein content in the fish fed Spirulina diets as compared to fish-meal-based control diet. The carcass ash and fat contents were positively and negatively correlated with dietary Spirulina level, respectively. Organoleptic evaluation revealed no effect of Spirulina feeding on the quality of both raw and cooked fish. The gut digestive enzyme activity did not show any definite trend with respect to Spirulina supplementation. Spirulina improved the protein digestibility of the diets.  相似文献

One of the main factors hindering aquaculture production of American lobsters (Homarus americanus) is the need for a cost‐effective and nutritionally sound diet. Live Artemia results in good growth, but is expensive and is a constant source of contamination. Frozen Artemia, although lower in cost, generally results in decreased survivorship and growth relative to live Artemia. The recent advent and mass production of enriched frozen Artemia products may provide for a cost‐effective and nutritionally complete food source for culturing American lobsters. Here, commercially available frozen adult Artemia enriched with either n‐3 fatty acids, or Spirulina was fed to juvenile American lobsters, and their growth and survivorship for three months was compared with that of animals fed unenriched frozen adult Artemia. Both enriched Artemia products produced survivorship superior to that for animals fed unenriched Artemia. Results for growth were equivocal although animals fed the Spirulina‐enriched Artemia had the greatest condition factor. Although more costly by the end of the experiment, enriched diets were more economically efficient than unenriched Artemia. This research demonstrates that enriched feedstuffs are cost‐effective over longer time intervals, and benefits may continue beyond the hatchery‐rearing phase. Enriched diets may also yield animals with a better condition factor, which may further influence their survivorship when released to the wild in enhancement programmes.  相似文献

The present study addresses the use of the microalga Spirulina maxima as a protein source in diets for tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus (Peters), fry. Animal protein was replaced with algae protein at ratios of 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100%, and the substitution effect was compared with a control diet in which fish meal was the sole protein. An additional 100% spirulina protein diet was supplemented with phosphorous to test for possible mineral deficiency in the plant-protein-based diet. The six treatments were tested in triplicate in a closed-recirculating system where the fish were fed by hand at 6% of their body weight. After a 9-week feeding period, the growth rate and protein utilization of fish fed the diet with 20% and 40%Spirulina were elevated and not significantly different (P>0.05) from those fed the control diet. Further increases in the alga protein content significantly decreased the growth and feeding performance. The addition of P to the 100%Spirulina diet slightly improved performance in comparison to the same diet without P. None of the treatments produced any clear adverse effects on carcass composition. It is observed that Spirulina can replace up to 40% of the fish meal protein in tilapia diets.  相似文献

Abstract

Three experiments were conducted. In Experiment 1, the acceptance time of pelleted diets sprayed with fresh palm fruit extract (FPFE), commercial palm oil (COM), or a control diet to African catfish, Clarias gariepinus, fingerlings was investigated. In Experiment 2, the effects of five diets on growth and survival of African catfish larvae were determined: (1) bambara nut waste-based (BW) diet; (2) bambara nut waste-based diet with 5% of diet formula of FPFE (BWP); (3) bambara nut waste-based diet with 5% of diet formula of FPFE plus 1.5% of diet formula of Spirulinapowder (BWPS); (4) fish waste-based diet (FWP); and (5) brine shrimp, Artemiasp., nauplii (control). In the BWP, BWPS, and FWP diets, fresh palm fruit extract was sprayed on the diets as a feed attractant. The Spirulinapowder was included in BWPS as an additional attractant. In Experiment 3, the effects of seven diets on growth and survival of the African catfish larvae were investigated: (1) BW; (2) BWP; (3) FWP; (4) a bambara waste-based diet with 5% COM (BWC); (5) a fish waste-based diet with 5% of formula as COM (FWC); (6) a fish waste-based diet with neither FPFE nor COM, and (7) brine shrimp nauplii (control). African catfish finger-lings accepted the pellets containing FPFE in significantly less time (P < 0.01) than they did the other pelleted diets. Inclusion of FPFE as 5% of diet formula significantly (P<0.05) improved the growth and survival of African catfish larvae fed formulated diets. Inclusion of Spirulinaat 1.5% of diet formula had no effect. Brine shrimp was nutritionally superior to the formulated diets for the African catfish larvae during the first 28 days of feeding. The results indicate that FPFE can be added to a diet for African catfish at 5% of diet formula. However, brine shrimp nauplii fed to larvae had the highest percentage survival and highest growth rates of any of the treatments.  相似文献

Major challenges in culture of Atlantic halibut larvae have been slow growth during the late larval stages and inferior juvenile quality due to pigmentation errors and incomplete eye migration during metamorphosis. The hypothesis of this study was that feeding on‐grown Artemia would alleviate these problems. Artemia were grown for 3–4 days on Origreen or Origo. The growth and nutrient composition of Artemia nauplii and on‐grown Artemia were analysed, and both Artemia types were fed to Atlantic halibut larvae, on‐grown Artemia from 15 days post‐first feeding (dpff). The body length of Artemia increased with 20%–70% in response to on‐growing. In all experiments, protein, free amino acids and the ratio of phospholipid to total lipid increased, while lipid and glycogen decreased. The fatty acid composition improved in some cases and not in others. The micronutrient profiles were not negatively affected in on‐grown Artemia. All these changes are thought to be beneficial for marine fish larvae. The final weight of Atlantic halibut postlarvae was similar, and 90% of the juveniles had complete eye migration in both groups. It is concluded that the present version of Artemia nauplii probably covers the nutrient requirements of Atlantic halibut larvae.  相似文献

Growth rate, soluble-protein content and digestive-enzyme activities were studied in Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931) early post-larvae under six feeding regimens, which included combinations of freshly hatched Artemia nauplii, an artificial diet and algae. Growth (0.11 mg DW day−1) and soluble-protein content (61.8 μg protein larvae−1 at PL10) of post-larvae fed mixed diets were significantly higher (P < 0.05). An artificial diet used alone or co-fed with algae caused the lowest growth (0.03–0.05 mg DW day−1) and soluble-protein content (13.7–15.5 μg protein larvae−1 at PL10). Trypsin-like activity was higher (up to 10 times) in post-larvae fed Artemia nauplii and an artificial diet alone or plus algae. The artificial diet stimulated chymotrypsin activity, apparently in response to squid meal present in this diet. Amylase activity increased when post-larvae were fed the artificial diet. This was apparently related more to the origin of the starch than to the total carbohydrate level of the diet. No obvious relationship was found between enzyme activity and growth in any feed combination. Based on growth and soluble-protein content, we determined that partial substitution (50%) of Artemia nauplii by artificial diet and the use of algae co-fed beyond the first post-larval stage benefits growth and the nutritional state of L. vannamei post-larvae.  相似文献

This study describes the effects of feeding taurine‐supplemented Artemia on the growth, survival, whole body taurine content and jaw malformation rate of larval yellowtail kingfish Seriola lalandi. Larvae were fed rotifers containing no supplemental taurine from 3 to 15 day post hatch (dph) and Artemia co‐enriched with taurine from 12 to 22 dph. Artemia were supplemented at concentrations of either 0, 0.8, 1.6, 2.4, 3.2 or 4.0 g of taurine L?1 during the 18 h HUFA enrichment process. Taurine content in the Artemia increased from 0.76 ± 0.04% DW in those without supplementation to 3.95 ± 0.17% DW in those supplemented at 4.0 g L?1. Survival rates of larval yellowtail kingfish were significantly lower in all taurine‐supplemented treatments compared to the unsupplemented control. Growth was significantly improved in those larvae fed taurine‐supplemented Artemia; however, we cannot attribute this improvement solely to taurine, as improved growth may have been a function of the reduced survival, and therefore increased prey availability, in these treatments. The whole body taurine content of larvae fed unsupplemented Artemia was significantly lower (1.85 ± 0.03% DW) than those fed supplemented Artemia, which did not differ from each other (pooled average 2.48 ± 0.03% DW), suggesting either a functional excretion mechanism is in place or that this represents the saturation value for larvae of this age. Jaw malformation rates were not affected by Artemia taurine content. The results of this research suggest yellowtail kingfish larvae may have a lower requirement and/or a reduced tolerance to excess dietary taurine than juveniles.  相似文献

Alligator gar, Atractosteus spatula, are a new aquaculture species with many aspects about rearing unknown. Alligator gar are cannibalistic during their larval stage and methods to minimize cannibalism should be developed to increase overall survival. Growth and survival were determined for larvae fed pelleted floating food only or fed pelleted floating food supplemented with live Artemia spp. nauplii for the first 7 d of exogenous feeding (5 d after hatching [d.a.h.] to 12 d.a.h.). Total length, weight, condition, and specific growth rate (SGR) was determined at 12 and 20 d.a.h. Fish supplemented with Artemia were larger by 12 d.a.h. and continued to be at 20 d.a.h. than fish fed only floating food. SGR was higher at both 12 and 20 d.a.h. for fish that received the Artemia supplement. Survival was higher for fish supplemented with Artemia (71%) than for the floating food only treatment (43%). Cannibalism was the primary cause of mortalities and was higher in fish fed floating food only (44%) compared to Artemia supplemented fish (19%). Artemia may elicit a stronger feeding response and improve acceptance of pelleted floating foods. Results suggest an improved feeding regime compared to previous feeding regimes used in rearing larval alligator gar.  相似文献

This investigation examined the effects on growth and survival of seahorses Hippocampus abdominalis Leeson 1827 fed a 25% body weight (wet weight) daily ration of live Artemia sp. enriched with Algamac‐3050, frozen mysids Amblyops kempi or a combination of live enriched Artemia and frozen mysids. After 3 months there was no difference in seahorse length, wet weight, condition factor (CF), or food conversion ratios (FCR) between the treatments. Mean daily specific growth rate (SGR) was higher for the Artemia‐only treatment than for the mysid‐only treatment (P<0.05). FCRs ranged from 6.14 g to 8.72 g dry weight of food required to give a 1‐g dry weight increase in seahorses. There was no difference in survival between treatments. Fatty acid analysis revealed that mysids had a higher percentage composition of EPA, 20 : 5n‐3, and DHA, 22 : 6n‐3, but a lower composition of AA, 20 : 4n‐6, than enriched Artemia. Percentage n‐3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs) in mysid levels were approximately twice that of Artemia. Proximate analysis revealed mysids to be higher than the enriched Artemia in protein and fats, and lower in water content. This experiment demonstrates that, although no growth advantage was derived from the use of frozen mysids, they can be used successfully as an alternative food to live enriched Artemia for H. abdominalis. The use of frozen mysids is highly recommended in commercial seahorse culture if the seahorses are to be sold into the live aquarium trade, as this may increase their chances of survival after sale.  相似文献

Heterobranchus longifilis larvae were reared over a 35 d period to evaluate the effects of stocking densities and feeding regimes on growth and survival. In experiment 1, larvae (12.3?±?2.1 mg) were stocked into glass aquaria at densities of 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 larvae L?1. Larvae were fed on Artemia nauplii ad libitum. Significant variations in terms of growth performance and feed utilization occurred at all levels of density treatments. Specific growth rate (SGR), body weight gain (BWG), and feed efficiency (FE) of the larvae decreased significantly as density increased. However, survival rate increased with the increase of stocking density. In experiment 2, larvae (13.4?±?1.1 mg) stocked at a density of 15 larvae L?1, in the same conditions as experiment 1, were fed on three different regimes: Artemia nauplii; 35%?protein beef brain; and 35%?protein commercial catfish feed (CN+). SGR, BWG, and coefficient of variation (CV) of larvae fed on Artemia nauplii were significantly higher than those fed on beef brain and CN+. The survival rate of larvae fed on beef brain was significantly higher (88.40?±?9.75%) than those of Artemia (69.21?±?6.69%) and CN+ (40.40?±?6.22%). The results of this study suggest that the optimum stocking density is 15 larvae L?1 and the beef brain can be used as alternative feed to Artemia in rearing H. longifilis larvae.  相似文献

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of enriched Artemia by fish and soybean oils supplemented with vitamin E on growth performance, lipid peroxidation, lipase activity and fatty acid composition of Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus) larvae. For this purpose, five experimental diets including non‐enriched Artemia (control diet), Artemia enriched with soybean oil supplemented with 15% and 30% vitamin E (S15 and S30 diets) and fish oil supplemented with 15% and 30% vitamin E (F15 and F30 diets) were used. The larvae were fed to apparent satiation four times per day for 22 days. The results indicated that fish fed enriched Artemia had no significant differences compared with those fed non‐enriched Artemia in terms of growth and survival, but increase in vitamin E levels from 15 to 30% improved growth performance of larvae. Vitamin E content in fish fed S15 and S30 diets was significantly higher. Fish fed non‐enriched Artemia had significantly higher thiobarbituric acid and lower lipase activity. The highest HUFA and n‐3/n‐6 ratio were observed in fish fed F15 and F30 diets. Our results demonstrated that fish oil can completely replace with soybean oil in larval diets. Therefore, using S30 diet is recommended for feeding of Persian sturgeon larvae.  相似文献

This study aimed to establish feeding strategies covering the whole larval period of the forktail blenny, Meiacanthus atrodorsalis, based on the standard hatchery feeds of rotifers and Artemia. Three purposely designed experiments were conducted to determine the appropriate times and techniques to transition larvae from rotifers onto Artemia nauplii of a Great Salt Lake (GSL) strain, and a specialty AF strain, as well as subsequent transition onto enriched metanauplii of GSL Artemia. With a 3‐day co‐feeding period, larvae adapted well to a transition from rotifers to newly hatched GSL Artemia nauplii as early as 5 days posthatching (DPH), and as early as 3 DPH when fed the smaller AF Artemia nauplii. However, prolonging the rotifer‐feeding period up to 11 DPH did not negatively affect survival. Larvae fed Artemia nauplii of the AF strain showed 17–21% higher survival, 24–33% greater standard length and body depth, and 91–200% greater dry weight, after 20 days relative to those fed nauplii of the GSL strain. Meanwhile, enriched Artemia metanauplii of the GSL strain were shown to be an acceptable alternative to AF Artemia nauplii for later larvae, producing similar survival and growth when introduced from 8 DPH. Based on our findings, we recommend feeding M. atrodorsalis larvae rotifers as a first food between 0 and 2 DPH, introducing AF Artemia nauplii from 3 DPH, followed by enriched GSL Artemia metanauplii from 8 DPH onward, with a 3‐day co‐feeding period between each prey change.  相似文献

Abstract

Aiming at a precocious substitution of live prey by artificial diet, a 20-day experiment with pacu, Piaractus mesopotamicuslarvae using co-feeding and abrupt weaning strategies was set up. At the end of the experiment, larvae fed Artemia showed the best results (P < 0.05) in weight, total length and biomass, compared with other treatments. Larvae fed exclusively a microencapsulated diet never ingested the diet. Diet ingestion in co-fed and abrupt-weaned larvae was low, but did increase during the experiment; however, Artemia influenced diet ingestion on co-fed larvae. Careful considerations should be given to diet processing and formulation to ensure survival and growth of larvae fed exclusively on prepared diets.  相似文献

A feeding trial on yellow tail cichlid Pseudotropheus acei (Regan 1922) was undertaken to asses the effect of dietary Spirulina meal as a natural carotenoid source. Four experimental diets were formulated to progressively replace 0% (C), 2.5% (SP2.5), 5% (SP5) and 10% (SP10) of fish meal weight. Ten fish per tank (initial weight 3.75?±?0.02?g) were randomly distributed into twelve 80?l fiberglass tanks connected to a closed recirculation system (temperature 26.7?±?0.06°C). The diets were tested in triplicate for 12?weeks. The specific growth rate of fish fed all Spirulina diets were significantly higher compared to diet C. Feed intake (FI) tended to increase with dietary Spirulina level, and fish fed diet SP10 had significantly higher FI values compared to diet C. No significant differences in feed conversion ratio were observed among these groups. Although the protein efficiency ratio of fish fed diet C was lower than that of all Spirulina diets, no significant differences were observed among these groups (P?>?0.05). The total egg production and hatching rate (%) of eggs derived from all fish fed with Spirulina diets was significantly higher compared those from fish fed diet C. The yellow and blue coloration of yellow tail cichlid fed the diet containing Spirulina meal was enhanced and inclusion of dietary Spirulina meal was elevated carotenoids in skin. Results of the present study indicated that Spirulina meal has the potential to enhance the growth, reproductive performance and coloration on yellow tail cichlid.  相似文献

Spirulina is a unicellular algae with good nutritional value. Its efficiency has been shown in Artemia salina and penaeid shrimp diets. To investigate the origin of this good nutritional value in shrimp, experiments were carried out on Penaeus japonicus juveniles. Pelleted diets containing various proportions of Spirulina from 0 to 8% were fed to shrimp. Good growth, survival and pigmentation were obtained with the diet containing 8% Spirulina. When replacing Spirulina completely by another single-cell ingredient source, lactic yeast, shrimp pigmentation was markedly reduced. Otherwise, growth performances were nearly similar. To identify the active fraction of Spirulina powder, an extraction was performed to separate two fractions, the lipidic and the lipid-free. Preliminary growth results of shrimp fed diets containing these extracted fractions showed that the active fraction of Spirulina was more likely found within the lipid-free fraction, rather than the lipidic fraction. Even though Spirulina can contribute positively to formulation of shrimp diets, it is too expensive (within the French economic context) to be incorporated at high percentage. But a substitution of lactic yeast for Spirulina is feasible as far as shrimp growth and survival are concerned.  相似文献

The present study was performed to evaluate the effect of using Artemia biomass, by‐product from Artemia cyst production on growth and feed utilization of goby Pseudapocryptes elongatus fingerlings. A control diet containing fishmeal as main protein source was compared with four experimental diets in which fishmeal protein was replaced by increasing dietary levels of Artemia protein, namely 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. The five test diets were compared with a commercial diet and dried Artemia. All diets were formulated to be equivalent in crude protein (360–370 g kg?1) and lipid (58–65 g kg?1). The experiment was conducted in 80 L plastic tanks filled with water at a salinity of 15 g L?1. Goby fingerlings with 0.21 g initial weight were fed the test diets for 30 days. The results showed that weight gain and specific growth rate of goby were positively correlated with total feed intake. Moreover, growth performances and feed utilization in the fry receiving the commercial feed and fishmeal control diet were similar, both were inferior to the groups fed dried Artemia and the based formulated diets. These results illustrate that both dried Artemia and Artemia‐based feeds can be used for feeding goby fingerlings, indicating the high potential of using locally produced Artemia biomass, which could contribute to reduce the reliance on fishmeal and improve profits for Artemia producers.  相似文献

The performance of microbial flocs as food for Artemia, which were produced using waste from a recirculating aquaculture system stocking European eel (Anguilla anguilla), was investigated in an 18‐day feeding trial. Four dietary treatments were used: Chlorella only (diet 1), flocs only (diet 2), and both Chlorella and flocs offered as mixed diets in different proportions (diets 3 and 4). The survival rate of Artemia fed diets 1 and 4 were significantly higher than those fed diets 2 and 3. The survival rate of Artemia fed diet 4 was the highest among the four diets. Individual length (10.02 ± 2.44 mm) and biomass production of diet 3 (3.2 ± 0.40 g L–1) were the highest among the four diets. The crude protein contents for Artemia fed diets 2, 3 and 4 were 591.22 ± 30.15, 580.34 ± 22.42 and 533.27 ± 34.19 g kg–1, respectively, which were significantly higher than that of diet 1 (461.25 ± 10.33 g kg–1). The concentrations of free amino acids and the fatty acid compositions in the four diets were equal, except for the C24:0 content. The highly unsaturated fatty acid concentration of Artemia fed diet 2 was higher than those of the other three diets.
