Ninety crossbred beef heifers averaging 260 kg were blocked by weight and allotted randomly to 15 pens of six heifers each, with three replicates per treatment. The treatments were spayed heifers (S); intact heifers (I); S + Synovex-H7 (SH); I + Synovex-H (IH); and S + Synovex-S7 (SS). The heifers were spayed vaginally with a Willis instrument; intact heifers were rectally palpated for reproductive soundness. Heifers were fed a growing diet (55 d), re-implanted and subsequently fed a finishing ration (73 or 101 d). All heifers were observed for estrus daily at approximately 0600 and 2000 until d 69. A jugular vein blood sample was obtained from each heifer on d 48, 55, 62 and 69 for blood progesterone analysis. Results of blood progesterone analysis and reproductive tract examination indicated that two spayed heifers were incompletely spayed, a 96% success rate. The SH and SS heifers continued to exhibit estrous behavior despite being successfully spayed. Heifers implanted with Synovex-H had greater (P less than .01) ADG and were more efficient (P less than .03) than nonimplanted heifers. The SS heifers had greater ADG (P less than .05) during the finishing phase than SH heifers, but no advantage of SS over SH was apparent during the growing phase. The overall ADG response to implantation was fourfold greater (P less than .07) in the spayed heifers than in the intact heifers (32 vs 8%). Heifers implanted with Synovex-H had greater adjusted hot carcass weight (P less than .02) and ribeye area (P less than .002) than nonimplanted heifers. For adjusted live weight and ribeye area, the response to implantation was approximately threefold greater in the spayed heifer than the intact heifer. These results demonstrate that spaying and implanting heifers can increase rates and efficiency of gain even though behavioral estrus is not eliminated.  相似文献

Feedlot performance of hysterectomized and ovariectomized heifers   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Seventy-five crossbred heifers (mean weight 304 kg) were stratified by weight and source and placed in eight pens. Four duplicate treatments were randomly assigned to pens as follows: (1) intact-control (n = 19), (2) intact + melengestrol acetate (MGA, n = 20), (3) hysterectomy (n = 17) and (4) ovariectomy (OVX, n = 19). All heifers were preconditioned for 2 mo before beginning the finishing study. Surgery was performed through a high lumbar incision approximately 3 wk before the finishing study began. Group 2 heifers were fed .4 mg X head-1 X d-1 MGA. Blood samples were collected at 28-d intervals throughout the 112-d finishing phase. Ovaries were collected at slaughter and carcass data were obtained 24 h after slaughter. On d 112, progesterone was higher (P less than .05) in hysterectomized heifers than in other treatment groups. Serum progesterone concentration was nondetectable (less than .35 ng/ml) in OVX and MGA heifers. There were no differences (P greater than .05) in feed efficiency or carcass characteristics among the four treatments. Hysterectomized and MGA heifers had similar (P greater than .05) average daily gains, which were higher (P less than .15) than control and OVX heifers. These data suggest that the elevated levels of progesterone from the maintained corpora lutea and the subsequent absence of estrous activity in the hysterectomized heifers are advantageous for promoting growth in feedlot heifers.  相似文献

Seventy-seven heifers weighing about 200 kg were assigned randomly to intact control (C), ovariectomized (OVX) immunized against estradiol (BSA-E), BSA-E + trenbolone acetate (BSA-E + TBA), TBA or ovx + TBA groups. The objective of the study was to determine the effects of ovariectomy, immunoneutralization of estradiol and trenbolone acetate treatment on growth rate and carcass merit. Heifers were fed a corn-corn silage diet and were slaughtered when treatment groups attained live-animal weights of 433 kg. Observations of rate of growth, efficiency of feed conversion, characteristics of carcasses and characteristics of organoleptic properties of the cooked meat were made. Average daily gains (ADG) were similar in the control and OVX groups and tended to be less than in other treatment groups (P less than .36). Although not statistically significant, the observed mean for the BSA-E + TBA treatment suggests improved ADG and TDN per unit of gain, indicating a possible immunization X TBA interaction. Data also suggested that heifers implanted with TBA had increased ADG and efficiencies of gain. Possibly, immunoneutralization of endogenous estradiol can improve ADG as compared with control and OVX groups. Treatments had no effect on color or texture of lean muscle at the 12th rib interface. The OVX + TBA group had less (P less than .01) 12th rib fat cover than other groups and lower percent fat in the rib than C. The BSA-E + TBA and TBA groups also possessed larger (P less than .02) longissimus muscle areas than the control group. Observations of juiciness, tenderness and flavor were similar among all treatments.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of immunization against recombinant GnRH fusion proteins and growth promotants on onset of puberty, feedlot performance, and carcass characteristics of beef heifers. Heifers were immunized against an ovalbumin fusion protein containing 7 GnRH peptides (oGnRH, n = 12), a thioredoxin fusion protein containing 7 GnRH peptides (tGnRH, n = 12), a combination of oGnRH plus tGnRH (otGnRH, n = 12), or a combination of ovalbumin and thioredoxin (control, n = 11). Each heifer received a primary immunization containing 1 mg of protein in 1 mL of adjuvant injected into the mammary gland at wk 0 (mean age = 38 wk) and booster immunizations at wk 6 and 12. Six heifers within each treatment received Synovex H implants at wk -2. Weekly blood samples were collected from wk -2 to 26 for determination of serum progesterone concentrations and GnRH antibody titers. In GnRH-immunized heifers, GnRH antibody titers increased after the first booster injection, peaked after the second booster injection, and remained elevated through the end of the study (P < 0.01). Heifers immunized against oGnRH achieved greater (P < 0.05) GnRH antibody titers than tGnRH heifers but did not differ (P = 0.20) from otGnRH heifers. During the 26-wk study, ovulation was prevented (P < 0.05) in 10 out of 12, 12 out of 12, 11 out of 12, and 0 out of 11 tGnRH, oGnRH, otGnRH, and control heifers, respectively. At slaughter, uterine weights were lighter (P < 0.01) for GnRH-immunized heifers than control heifers. Synovex H-implanted heifers had greater (P < 0.05) ADG from wk -2 to 26, greater LM area, and lesser percentages of KPH, yield grade, and quality grade than nonimplanted heifers, regardless of the immunization treatment. Immunization against GnRH fusion proteins resulted in production of antibodies against GnRH that prevented ovulation in 92% of the heifers without affecting feedlot or carcass performance. Implanting heifers with Synovex H improved ADG, LM area, and yield grade. Improvements in delivery of the oGnRH vaccine may provide a feasible alternative to surgical spaying of heifers.  相似文献

Two trials were conducted to examine reproductive function and feedlot performance by heifers after active immunization against GnRH. In trial 1, heifers were not immunized or were immunized with one of three doses of a GnRH-KLH (keyhole limpet hemocyanin) conjugate in Freund's complete adjuvant. Antibodies against GnRH were not detectable in non-immunized heifers (n = 9). However, antibodies against GnRH were noted in all immunized animals (n = 30) within 8 wk of primary immunization; anti-GnRH antibody concentrations were at a maximum 16 to 20 wk after immunization. This increased anti-GnRH titer was associated with a decreased serum concentration of progesterone. Ovarian and uterine weight and tissue concentrations of LH and GnRH receptor were reduced (P less than .05) by immunoneutralization of GnRH. Similarly, immunization against GnRH reduced (P less than .05) weight gain during feedlot confinement. In trial 2, feedlot performance after insertion of anabolic steroid implants (Synovex H) was evaluated in non-immunized heifers (n = 15), heifers actively immunized against GnRH-KLH (n = 15) or KLH alone (n = 15), or non-immunized heifers treated with melengestrol acetate (MGA; n = 15). Serum concentrations of progesterone were depressed in anti-GnRH and MGA-fed groups, but ovarian and uterine weights were depressed (P less than .05) only in heifers immunized against GnRH. Total weight gain and gain during the final 4 wk of confinement did not differ (P greater than .05) among groups with steroid implants. The GnRH-KLH conjugate is an effective immunogen in heifers, leading to suppression of reproductive activity. The depression of weight gain that attends development of anti-GnRH titers may be reversed by use of implants that contain anabolic steroids.  相似文献

Angus x crossbred heifers (270 per trial) were used in an experiment conducted over one 105-d summer and one 104-d winter feeding period. Treatments were identical for each trial and included: 1) control, 2) estrogenic implant (E), 3) trenbolone acetate implant (TBA), 4) E + TBA (ET), 5) melengestrol acetate (MGA) in the feed, and 6) ET + MGA (ETM). Each treatment was replicated in five pens, with nine heifers per pen in each season. Initial weights (mean = 384 kg, SE = 57) were the same for each season. There were no treatment x season interactions for final BW, ADG, G:F, water intake, or carcass characteristics. Heifers receiving a growth-promoting agent were 11.6 kg (SE = 4.08) heavier and gained 0.108 kg/d (SE = 0.04) more (P < 0.05) than control heifers. Heifers receiving ET gained 0.09 kg/d (SE = 0.032) more (P = 0.05) than heifers not receiving ET. Heifers receiving ET (with and without MGA) had greater G:F (P < 0.05) than control, E, and TBA heifers. Carcass weights of ET-treated heifers were greater (P < 0.05) than carcass weights for unimplanted heifers, those fed MGA only, and heifers receiving either E or TBA implants. Marbling scores were increased (P < 0.05) by feeding MGA to ET-treated heifers. Water intake was greater (P < 0.01) in the summer (31 L/d) than in the winter (18 L/ d), with no difference among implant treatments. Heifers fed in the winter had heavier carcasses, less 12th-rib fat, greater marbling scores, larger LM area, and a greater incidence of liver abscesses than heifers finished in the summer (P < 0.01). A treatment x season interaction (P = 0.07) was evident for DMI during the 35-d coldest and hottest portions of the year. Heifers fed MGA and implanted with ET tended (P = 0.07) to have greater DMI in the summer but lesser DMI in the winter. In general, differences among growth-promotant programs were relatively similar over the entire summer and in winter.  相似文献

In dose titration trials beef heifers received depot-formulated melengestrol acetate (DEPO-MGA) in single s.c. ear injections to determine effects on performance and pregnancy inhibition. In a 112-d feedlot trial, 105 heifers were assigned to light, medium and heavy weight blocks on five treatments: dietary MGA (.5 mg.hd-1.d-1), control (no MGA) or DEPO-MGA on d 1 at .5, 1.0 or 1.5 ml/hd (30, 60 or 90 mg MGA/hd, respectively). A high-energy cracked corn diet was fed to all heifers ad libitum. At d 56 and d 112, ADG and feed/gain were not affected (P greater than .05) by dietary MGA or DEPO-MGA treatments, although dietary MGA tended to increase 112-d ADG (1.67 vs 1.58 kg) compared with controls. In a pasture trial, 100 beef heifers were assigned by weight to five treatments: control (no MGA) or DEPO-MGA injected on d 1 at .5, 1.0, 1.5 or 2.0 ml/hd (30, 60, 90 or 120 mg MGA/hd, respectively). Heifers were pastured as a single herd and were exposed to fertile bulls from d 7 to d 181. Weights and pregnancy data were recorded at d 62, 90, 134, 181 and 225. Heifer ADG was not affected (P greater than .05) by DEPO-MGA treatment at any weighing date. By d 90, 90% of control heifers were pregnant, and 100% were pregnant by d 134. Pregnancy inhibition rates of 90% to 100% for each DEPO-MGA treatment at d 62, 90 and 134 were higher (P less than .01) than those in control heifers. Pregnancy was inhibited in 90% of heifers on 60-mg and 90-mg DEPO-MGA treatments through d 181, and in 95% of heifers on the 120 mg DEPO-MGA treatment through d 225.  相似文献

Two studies utilizing 1,862 yearling heifers were conducted to determine the effects of a fenbendazole oral drench in addition to an ivermectin pour-on (SG+IVPO), compared with an ivermectin pour-on (IVPO) or a doramectin injectable (DMX) alone, on parasite burden, feedlot performance, and carcass merit of feedlot cattle. In the first study, heifers receiving the SG+IVPO had fewer (P = 0.02) cattle retreated for disease and 73% fewer (P = 0.06) worm eggs per fecal sample 98 d after treatment than heifers treated with IVPO. Heifers treated with SG+IVPO consumed more DM, had greater ADG, were heavier at slaughter, and had heavier carcasses than IVPO-treated heifers (P < 0.05). Heifers treated with SG+IVPO also had more (P = 0.07) carcasses grading USDA Prime or Choice than IVPO-treated heifers. In the second study, heifers treated with SG+IVPO had fewer (P < 0.01) worm eggs per fecal sample 35 d after treatment and had fewer numbers of adult and larval Cooperia and Trichostrongylus spp. in the small intestine at slaughter (P < 0.10) compared with heifers treated with DMX. Heifers treated with SG+IVPO consumed more DM, were heavier at slaughter, and had heavier carcasses than DMX-treated heifers (P < 0.01). The SG+IVPO-treated heifers also had greater ADG (P < 0.10). The broad-spectrum effectiveness of a combination of a fenbendazole oral drench and an ivermectin pour-on reduced parasite burden and increased feed intake, ADG, and carcass weight in feedlot heifers compared with treatment with an endectocide alone.  相似文献

In a 172-d finishing trial (Exp. 1), 210 recently weaned crossbred heifers were allotted to six growth promotant treatment groups, involving implanting initially with Synovex-C (C) or H (H) followed by reimplanting with Finaplix-H (F) or H and F. Melengestrol acetate (MGA) was provided in the diet to four of the treatment groups. Heifers fed MGA and administered only F as the terminal implant had the greatest (P = .01) number of mature ovaries with follicles but also had lower (P = .01) gain/DMI. In a 182-d finishing study (Exp. 2), 270 recently weaned crossbred heifers were allotted to the following six implant (d 0)/ reimplant (d 70) groups using no implant (N), Ralgro (R) or H: N/R, R/H, R/R, N/R, H/H and R/R for Treatments 1 through 6, respectively. On d 70, all heifers were implanted with F. Heifers were fed MGA from d 70 to 182 (Treatments 1, 2, and 3) or for the entire trial (Treatments 4, 5, and 6). Implanting on d 0 increased (P < .05) overall ADG. Differences (P > .05) in performance were not found between MGA treatment groups. Using an H implant/reimplant regimen decreased (P = .01) ovarian and(or) follicular development when compared with an R implant/reimplant regimen. In a 126-d finishing trial (Exp. 3), 360 crossbred yearling heifers were used to evaluate F and estrogen (Implus-H) implants when used in combination with an MGA feeding program. Heifers receiving only F in combination with MGA had greater (P < .05) ADG, whereas all heifers fed MGA had greater (P < .05) gain/DMI than heifers not fed MGA. These data suggest that feeding MGA was not beneficial for young heifers, particularly if they are provided an initial estrogenic implant followed by a second implant. In older (yearling) heifers, increased gains and gain/DMI were obtained by feeding MGA and implanting initially or 56 d later with F.  相似文献

Feedlot and carcass traits of nulliparous and primiparous females representing eight breed types, including Bos taurus and Bos indicus x Bos taurus crosses, were evaluated. Nulliparous females (heifers) were in the feedlot for 4 mo; primiparous females (heiferettes) were fed for 2 1/3 mo after their calves were weaned at 6 mo of age. Heifers averaged higher (P less than .01) in dressing percentage, percentage of kidney fat, carcass grade (P less than .10), and color of lean (P less than .05) compared with heiferettes. Heiferettes exceeded the nulliparous group in feedlot ADG (P less than .01), fat thickness (P less than .05), and percentage of steak, roast, and bone (P less than .01). Parity effects on carcass weight, longissimus area, marbling, pH, and shear force value were not statistically significant. Dam breed types differed in several traits, including marbling (P less than .05) and percentage of steak (P less than .10), roast (P less than .01), and bone (P less than .01). Dam breed x parity interactions were nonsignificant. Results show that beef derived from heiferettes is competitive with heifer beef.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of prenatal testosterone treatment in combination with postnatal steroid implantation (Exp. 1) and to assess the effect of time of prenatal testosterone treatment in conjunction with postnatal steroid implantation (Exp. 2) on animal performance and carcass characteristics. In Exp. 1, seventy-six pregnant cows were assigned randomly to a control group or implanted with testosterone propionate (TP) silastic implants between d 40 and 80 of gestation. Half the heifer calves were selected randomly to be implanted with 200 mg TP plus 20 mg estradiol benzoate (EB); the other half of the steer calves were implanted with 200 mg progesterone plus 20 mg EB on d 1 and 85 of the feedlot trial. Daily gain of heifers was increased 10.4% (P less than .08) due to prenatal testosterone treatment (P) and 16.4% (P less than .05) by postnatal steroid implantation (I). Feed efficiency was 12.9% greater (P less than .05) due to P and 9.5% greater (P less than .05) due to I. Prenatal testosterone treatment decreased (P less than .05) kidney, pelvic and heart fat and final yield grade but increased (P less than .05) ribeye area of heifers. Heifers had greater (P less than .07) liver weights per unit of carcass weight due to P. In Exp. 2, one hundred seventy-four pregnant cows were assigned randomly to a control group or implanted with TP silastic implants on d 42, 63, 84 or 105 of gestation. Half the heifer and steer calves were selected randomly to be implanted on d 1 and 112 of the feedlot trial. Time of P caused a quadratic effect (P less than .08) on birth weight of heifers. There was a quadratic effect (P less than .05) of time of P on daily gain and final weight per day of age of heifers. Feed efficiency of heifers was improved (P less than .05) due to P. Postnatal steroid implantation increased (P less than .05) daily gain and feed efficiency of heifers by 9.6% and 8.6%, respectively. No changes were observed in growth performance of steers due to P. Results from these two trials suggest that the combination of prenatal testosterone treatment and postnatal testosterone and estradiol implantation produced an additive improvement of daily gain, feed efficiency and carcass merit of heifers.  相似文献

One hundred eleven Simmental x Hereford (3/8 to 5/8 Simmental) heifers were used to determine the effects of age, parturition and implantation on performance, carcass and meat-sensory traits, muscle-collagen characteristics and thoracic-button calcification. Eighty-five heifers that calved at about 2 yr of age, designated as single-calf heifers (SCH), were either implanted (I-SCH) with Synovex-H or not implanted (NI-SCH). The remaining 26, 2-yr-old non-pregnant heifers (2-OH) served as controls. Additionally, 24, 1-yr-old open heifers (1-OH) from the same genetic source were utilized as the standard heifer-production system. The 1-OH and 2-OH were slaughtered after being fed a high-grain diet for 137 and 112 d, respectively. The SCH were fed the same high-grain diet beginning about 1 mo after calving and were fed 137 d before slaughter. The 33 I-SCH were implanted when started on the high-grain diet. Calves were weaned about 5 wk before the SCH were slaughtered. The 2-OH had the highest (P less than .05) feedlot ADG, whereas no differences (P greater than .05) occurred among other treatments. Dressing percentages were higher (P less than .01) for I-SCH than for NI-SCH. Carcass weights were lowest (P less than .05) and percentage kidney, pelvic and heart fat was highest (P less than .01) for 1-OH. Fat thickness, yield grades, marbling scores and quality grades were similar (P greater than .05) and desirable for all treatments.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of testosterone on growth and composition of cattle. In the first experiment, crossbred yearling heifers (n = 48) were assigned to four treatments: 1) control (no implant), 2) Synovex-H implants on d 1 and 84, 3) one testosterone propionate implant administered on d 1 and a second on d 84 and 4) two testosterone propionate implants administered on d 1. Heifers were fed a high-energy diet for the 157-d study. Implanting with the high-testosterone treatment improved (P less than .05) daily gain and feed efficiency compared with the other treatments. Marbling score was reduced (P less than .05) with the high-testosterone treatment. In Exp. 2, mature cows (n = 36) were assigned to one of three feeding periods (0, 42, or 84 d) with the cows fed 42 or 84 d subdivided into two groups (implanted with testosterone propionate or nonimplanted control). Cows were fed a high-energy diet and slaughtered at the end of each feeding period. Testosterone did not influence (P greater than .05) feedlot performance. Increased time on feed reduced (P less than .01) daily gain (live weight basis) and feed efficiency but did not influence feed intake. Testosterone treatment had little influence on the fat and moisture contents of the carcass soft tissue or on the palatability characteristics of loin steaks. Time on feed increased lean muscle mass and carcass fat (P less than .05). Sensory traits were improved at 42 d on feed (P less than .05), but no further sensory improvement was observed at 84 d.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The effect of a single implantation (on d 1) with one or two long-acting, biodegradable estradiol implants (1E or 2E) on plasma estradiol concentrations in beef heifers was determined. The growth rates of these (2E) heifers, and of heifers repeatedly implanted with trenbolone acetate (TBA) or zeranol (Z) on d 1, 84, 168, and 252 of the trial, were compared to growth rates of controls. Trenbolone acetate alone was compared to TBA + 2E, and 2E was compared to 1E. At a mean age of 84 d (d 1 of experiment), 81 Hereford x Friesian heifers were allocated at random to the following treatments: Control (n = 15); TBA (n = 15); 1E (n = 12); 2E (n = 15); Z (n = 13); or TBA + 2E (n = 11). Mean live weight (kg) prior to slaughter on d 368 and hot carcass weight (kg) for heifers assigned to treatment Groups 1 to 6, respectively, were 366 and 200, 391 and 212, 374 and 201, 386 and 207, 387 and 210, and 391 and 208 (residual SD = 30.3 and 20.2). Heifers assigned to both the 2E and Z treatments were heavier on d 368 (P less than .05) and had longer teats on d 279 (P less than .05), less pelvic fat (P less than .05), and heavier kidneys (P less than .005) than control heifers. Heifers assigned to the TBA treatment had shorter teats on d 279 (P less than .001) but greater final live weight (P less than .05) and carcass weight than control heifers. Heifers given TBA alone had more pelvic fat (P less than .05) and lighter kidneys (P less than .05) than those given TBA + 2E. Mean estradiol concentrations in both the ipsilateral and contralateral jugular veins of heifers assigned to the 2E and TBA + 2E treatments, and in the ipsilateral jugular veins of heifers given 1E, were greater (P less than .05) than those in control heifers; concentrations did not decline during the experiment.  相似文献

A metabolism study and two feedlot trials were conducted to evaluate urea supplementation of peanut skin (PS) diets and ammoniation of PS as methods of reducing detrimental effects of tannins in PS on nutrient digestibility and performance of beef cattle. Tannin content of PS was reduced by 42% after ammoniation. Digestibility coefficients for dry matter, crude protein, nitrogen free extract, energy and total digestible nutrients were higher (P less than .05) for the control diet without PS compared with urea-supplemented PS (UPS) and ammoniated PS (APS) diets. Ether extract digestibility was higher (P less than .05) for UPS and APS diets compared with the control diet. Fecal N was higher (P less than .05) and N retention was lower (P less than .05) in steers fed UPS and APS diets compared with controls, which suggested that in UPS and APS diets dietary protein was being complexed with tannins and excreted. Steers fed the APS diet had lower (P less than .05) plasma urea nitrogen compared with control and UPS diets at 2, 4 and 6 h post-feeding. Eighteen heifers were fed control, UPS and APS diets individually for 84 d, resulting in similar (P less than .05) feedlot performance and carcass traits for heifers on all dietary treatments. Rumen fluid propionic acid levels were similar for control and APS heifers and somewhat lower (P greater than .05) for UPS heifers at 3 and 6 h post-feeding on d 62 of the trial. The experimental diets were fed to 54 steers (360 kg initial wt) ad libitum. After 98 d on dietary treatments average daily gains (ADG), final weights, carcass weights and carcass quality grades were not different (P greater than .05) for control and APS steers. Live weight and ADG were lower (P less than .05) for UPS steers on d 98 compared with control and APS steers, and UPS steers continued in the feedlot through d 147. After 98 d on control or APS diets 72.2% of the beef carcasses produced on each diet graded USDA Choice, and 100% of the carcasses of steers fed UPS graded USDA Choice after 147 d. A urea-supplemented PS diet or a diet containing ammoniated PS was ineffective in improving digestibility and N retention of PS diets when limit-fed to steers. However, ad libitum feeding of an ammoniated PS diet was effective in overcoming detrimental effects of tannins on feedlot performance of heifers and steers.  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted to evaluate methods of immunization against GnRH on antibody titer, luteal activity, and pregnancy in beef heifers. Experiment 1 evaluated the efficacy of adjuvants with 30 heifers. Control heifers were immunized against human serum albumin (HSA) emulsified in Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA). The other 4 treatments contained GnRH conjugated to HSA (HSA-GnRH) emulsified in FCA, Freund's incomplete adjuvant (FIA), DEAE dextran (DD) + mineral oil (MO), or DD+FIA. Treatment was in the mammary gland for all experiments. Titers against GnRH for heifers immunized against HSA-GnRH with FCA, DD+MO, or DD+FIA were greater than titers for HSA-GnRH with FIA or control heifers (P < 0.01). Body weight was reduced (P < 0.05) in control and FCA heifers compared with FIA, DD+MO, and DD+FIA heifers. Heifers immunized with DD+MO and DD+FIA had fewer granulomas in mammary glands than heifers treated with FCA (P < 0.01). In Exp. 2, 36 heifers were used to determine the effect of the protein conjugated to GnRH on titers against GnRH. Heifers (6/treatment) received a primary immunization against GnRH conjugated to HSA (HSA-GnRH), ovalbumin (OA-GnRH), or keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KL-GnRH), or heifers were immunized against each carrier protein. Antigens were emulsified in DD+FIA. Immunization of heifers against OA-GnRH, KL-GnRH, or HSA-GnRH suppressed luteal activity (P < 0.01) for 23, 16, and 12 wk, respectively, and antibody titers against GnRH were greater (P < 0.01) for 19, 5, and 7 wk, respectively, compared with heifers immunized against the carrier proteins. In Exp. 3, 90 heifers were used to determine the effect of immunization against GnRH on ovarian activity and pregnancy rate. Heifers (30/treatment) received a primary and 2 or 3 booster immunizations against GnRH conjugated to OA, and controls received a primary and 2 booster immunizations against OA. All antigens were emulsified in DD+FIA. At 8 wk after primary immunization, heifers were exposed to fertile bulls for 24 wk. Pregnancy rate was less (P < 0.01) for 3-booster heifers (13%) compared with control (83%) and 2-booster (62%) heifers. We conclude that immunization against GnRH, conjugated to OA and emulsified in DD+FIA, does not influence ADG and produces sufficient titers against GnRH to prevent estrous cycles with few mammary granulomas. Heifer and steer progeny of 2-yr-old first-cross (F1) heifers and 3- to 6-yr-old F1 cows, from Hereford dams and five sire breeds, were evaluated for postweaning feedlot growth and carcass composition. Breeds of sire of dam were Angus (A), Red Poll (RP), Tarentaise (T), Simmental (Sm), and Pinzgauer (P). Calves from 2-yr-old heifers were sired by Shorthorn, and calves from 3- to 6-yr-old dams were sired by Charolais. Breed of sire of dam was significant (P less than .05 to P less than .01) for total gain and final weight for female progeny from 2-yr-old dams. At all weights, Sm, P, and T ranked above A and RP. Progeny of A, P, Sm, and T F1 2-yr-old dams were not significantly different but were higher (P less than .05) than RP heifers in total feedlot gain. Breed of sire of dam was significant (P less than .05) for carcass weight and longissimus muscle area; T ranked highest and RP lowest. Breed was not significant for any growth traits of steer progeny of 2-yr-old dams. Breed was significant for marbling score; A ranked highest and exceeded (P less than .01) both RP and Sm steers. Breed was significant (P less than .05) for most growth traits in the heifer progeny of the 3- to 6-yr-old dams bred to Charolais sires. Heifer calves of the Sm group were heavier (P less than .05) than all other groups for most weights and total gain. For total gain, P and T were intermediate and A and RP lowest. For heifer carcass traits from 3- to 6-yr-old dams, breed was significant (P less than .05 to P less than .01) for carcass weight, longissimus muscle area, percentage of cutability, and estimated kidney, heart, and pelvic fat. Heifers from Sm-sired dams were heavier (P less than .05) than those from all other groups but ranked second to heifers from P for percentage of cutability. Marbling scores of RP heifer carcasses ranked highest of all groups. Breed was not significant (P greater than .05) for any of the weights or gains in steer progeny of 3- to 6-yr-old dams; however, the Sm and P groups ranked above A and RP for all feedlot test weights.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to determine the relationship between feeding ractopamine and different amounts of MP on growth and carcass characteristics of feedlot heifers. Seventy-two crossbred heifers (475 kg of initial BW) were fed individually a diet based on steam-flaked corn for ad libitum intake for 29 d. Heifers were implanted with 140 mg of trenbolone acetate and 14 mg of estradiol-17beta 60 d before the experiment. Treatments were arranged as a 2 x 3 factorial and included 0 or 200 mg of ractopamine-HCl (23 ppm)/ d, and urea, solvent soybean meal, or expeller soybean meal (ESBM) as the predominant protein supplement. The amounts of MP supplied by the urea, solvent soybean meal, and ESBM diets were 688, 761, and 808 g/ d, respectively, calculated according to level 1 of the NRC model. Body weights were obtained 1 d before ractopamine feeding and at slaughter. Blood samples were obtained 1 d before starting the experiment and 13 d later. Ractopamine improved ADG, efficiency of gain, carcass-adjusted ADG, and carcass-adjusted efficiency of gain (P < 0.01). For ADG, heifers demonstrated a ractopamine x protein source interaction (P < 0.05); heifers not fed ractopamine had greater ADG when fed ESBM than when fed urea, whereas for heifers fed ractopamine there were no differences (P > or = 0.10) among protein supplements. This interaction was not observed for carcass-adjusted ADG (P = 0.60). Final live weights (P = 0.02) and carcass weights (P = 0.01) were greater with ractopamine feeding. Carcass marbling scores and yield grades were not affected by ractopamine or protein source (P > or = 0.39). Plasma total alpha-amino N and glucose concentrations decreased more from pretreatment concentrations when heifers were fed ractopamine (P < 0.05). Feeding ractopamine to heifers for 28 d before slaughter improved ADG and efficiency of gain without any large effects on carcass characteristics. The MP supply does not need to be increased from that provided by finishing diets based on steam-flaked corn with urea as the primary N supplement to allow the maximal response to ractopamine by finishing heifers.  相似文献

Early-weaned Angus x Simmental heifers were used to evaluate the effects of postweaning nutritional management on feedlot performance, carcass merit, and the relationship of intramuscular and subcutaneous fat deposition to the feed efficiency among heifers fed for a high-quality market. Sixteen heifers were weaned at 73+/-5.5 d of age and grazed on endophyte-infected tall fescue for 18 mo before entering the feedlot (early-weaned-P). Eighty heifers from the following year's calf crop were weaned at 71+/-5.5 d of age and allowed either ad libitum access to a 25% concentrate diet (early-weaned-25C) or limit-fed a 90% concentrate diet (early-weaned-90C) to achieve a similar ADG. Following a 119-d growing period, 16 early-weaned-90C and 16 early-weaned-25C calves were paired based on BW and growth rate and individually fed during the finishing period along with the early-weaned-P heifers. Ultrasound measurements of s.c. and i.m. fat were recorded at approximately 60-d intervals throughout the finishing period. Feed efficiency was regressed against s.c. and i.m. fat, and i.m. fat was regressed on s.c. fat. Despite a similar ADG, early-weaned-90C calves gained more efficiently (P < or = 0.05) in the feedlot than early-weaned-25C calves. Heifers finished as yearlings tended (P < or = 0.10) to gain faster but gained less efficiently (P < or = 0.01) than early-weaned-90C heifers finished as calves. The rate of s.c. and i.m. fat deposition was similar between early-weaned-90C and early-weaned-25C heifer calves. The calves were grouped together for comparison to yearlings. Feed efficiency decreased quadratically (P < or = 0.01) as s.c. fat cover increased. The rate at which feed efficiency decreased relative to increasing s.c. fat cover was similar regardless of age at feedlot entry. However, heifers finished as calves gained more efficiently (P < or = 0.01) than yearlings at any given fat thickness. Feed efficiency decreased linearly (P < or = 0.01) as i.m. fat increased among heifers finished as calves. Additionally, heifers finished as calves deposited i.m. fat at a faster rate relative to s.c. fat (P < or = 0.01) than yearlings. These data suggest that heifers finished as calves produce high-quality carcasses with less s.c. fat cover while gaining more efficiently than heifers finished as yearlings.  相似文献

Beef (n = 783) and dairy (n = 209) heifers at 14 locations were used to evaluate the efficacy of feeding melengestrol acetate (MGA; .5 mg/d) for 7 d followed by an i.m. injection of 25 mg prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF) on the last day of MGA feeding (MGA + PGF) to synchronize estrus. Untreated heifers (C) and heifers injected once i.m. with PGF served as contemporary controls. Heifers were observed for estrual behavior for a minimum of 38 d starting on the 2nd d of MGA feeding. Heifers in estrus from d 1 through d 60 after PGF injection were artificially inseminated (AI) or bred to bulls (d 30 to 60 post PGF only). During the 7-d MGA feeding period fewer (P less than .01) MGA + PGF (1.5%) than C (20.6%) or PGF (18.1%) heifers were observed in estrus. Percent of heifers in estrus d 1 to 6 post PGF was different among groups (P less than .05; 30.5, 52.8, 72.3 for C, PGF and MGA + PGF, respectively). More (P less than .01) MGA-fed (92%) than non-MGA-fed (C and PGF combined) heifers (85.4%) were observed in estrus during d 1 to 24. Conception rate (CR) during d 1 to d 6 was not different (P = .19) between C (58.9%) and MGA + PGF (51.2%) heifers; CR was lower (P = .01) for MGA + PGF than for PGF (68.3%) heifers.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
