A 1-piece, tripod-shaped, acrylic intraocular lens was implanted in the posterior chamber after phacoemulsification to remove cataracts in 20 eyes of 16 dogs. Biomicroscopy and intraocular pressure measurements were performed at 1, 8, 30, and 90 days after surgery; retinoscopy was performed at day 30. Complications were not encountered during implantation of the lens. All dogs had mild ocular inflammation characterized predominantly by aqueous flare and mild corneal edema at day 1, which resolved completely by day 8; 3 eyes had mild hyphema at day 1, which resolved by day 8. Three eyes developed fibrin in the anterior chamber, which resolved by day 30. Two eyes developed distorted pupils caused by adherence of vitreous humor or fibrin to the incision site. Postoperative intraocular pressure ranged from 7 to 21 mm Hg. Implantation resulted in 9 emmotropic eyes, 5 myopic eyes, and 6 hyperopic eyes. Maintenance of central lens position was excellent in 19 eyes; in 1 eyes, a disclocated superior haptic at day 2 was easily repositioned.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate effects of intracameral injection of preservative-free 1% and 2% lidocaine hydrochloride solution on the anterior segment of the eyes in dogs. ANIMALS: 16 adult healthy dogs (8 male and 8 female) judged to be free of ocular disease. PROCEDURE: Dogs were randomly assigned to 2 groups of 8 dogs each. Group 1 dogs received an intracameral injection of 0.10 mL of preservative-free 1% lidocaine solution in the designated eye, and group 2 dogs received 0.10 mL of preservative-free 2% lidocaine solution in the designated eye. After injection, intraocular pressure was measured every 12 hours for 48 hours and then every 24 hours until 168 hours after injection. Slit-lamp biomicroscopy was performed preceding intracameral injection, 8 hours after injection, and then every 24 hours until 168 hours after injection. Ultrasonic pachymetry and specular microscopy were performed preceding intracameral injection and 72 and 168 hours after injection. Corneal thickness and endothelial cell density and morphology were compared with baseline measurements. RESULTS: No significant differences were found in intraocular pressure, corneal thickness, endothelial cell density, and morphologic features in either group, compared with baseline. A significant difference in aqueous flare was found for treated and control eyes 8, 24, and 48 hours after injection, compared with baseline. No significant difference in aqueous flare was found between treated and control eyes within either group. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: No adverse ocular effects were detected after intracameral injection of preservative-free 1% or 2% lidocaine solution; thus, its use would be safe for intraocular pain management in dogs.  相似文献

Effects of radiofrequency hyperthermia on the healthy canine cornea   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Radiofrequency hyperthermia was used to induce axial corneal lesions in the eyes of 10 dogs. Clinical observations were continued for up to 6 months, using biomicroscopy and indirect ophthalmoscopy. Eyes were harvested at intervals for light and electron microscopic evaluation. Clinical alterations included immediate corneal opacification and epithelial disruption at the site of electrode contact. Ulcerative keratitis persisted for 4 to 6 days, accompanied by anterior uveitis. Additional corneal changes included stromal thinning, edema, and vascularization. Final evaluation revealed negligible alterations in corneal contour or clarity 6 months after treatment. Microscopically, epithelial and superficial stromal necrosis preceded epithelial loss. Stromal alterations included edema (associated with focal endothelial detachments), vascularization, and inflammatory cell infiltration. Recovery was characterized by keratocytic hyperplasia and hypertrophy, epithelial proliferation, and stromal condensation.  相似文献

A 7-year-old male llama was examined for a 3-month history of weight loss, and unilateral keratouveitis. Clinical examination revealed nonulcerative corneal stromal abscessation, corneal vascularization, corneal edema, miosis, posterior synechia, cataract, and fibrin in the anterior chamber of the right eye. The left eye was normal. Histopathology of the right eye following enucleation revealed pyogranulomatous keratouveitis with intralesional fungal spherules consistent with Coccidioides spp. PCR amplification with DNA sequencing confirmed Coccidioides posadasii infection. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case of ocular coccidioidomycosis in a llama.  相似文献

Phacoemulsification has been successfully employed in humans and animals for lens extraction. This ultrasonic extracapsular surgical technique induces hydroxyl radical formation in the anterior chamber, which accumulates despite irrigation and aspiration. In this paper we determined the total antioxidant status of aqueous humor after phacoemulsification by measuring aqueous humor ascorbic acid levels. Mixed-breed dogs (n = 11; weighing about 10 kg) with normal eyes as determined by slit-lamp biomicroscopy, applanation tonometry, and indirect ophthalmoscopy had phacoemulsification performed in one eye with the other eye used as a control. Samples of aqueous humor were obtained by anterior chamber paracentesis before surgery and at days 1, 2, 3, 7, and 15 after surgery. Total aqueous humor antioxidant status was inferred from the capacity of aqueous humor to inhibit free radical generation by 2,2-azobis (2-amidopropane) chlorine. Ascorbic acid concentrations were measured by high-pressure liquid chromatography with UV detection. Protein content was determined with the biuret reagent. Statistical analysis was performed by anova followed by the paired t-test. Total antioxidant capacity was reduced from 48 to 27 min during the first 24 h with a gradual increase thereafter, remaining statistically lower than the control eye until 7 days postoperatively. Reduced levels of ascorbic acid followed this reduction in antioxidant capacity (from 211 to 99 microm after 24 h), remaining lower than the control eye until 15 days postoperatively. Protein concentration in aqueous humor increased from 0.62 mg/mL to 30.8 mg/mL 24 h after surgery, remaining statistically lower than the control eye until 15 days postoperatively. Paracentesis alone did not significantly alter the parameters measured. These results indicate that after phacoemulsification, the aqueous humor ascorbic acid levels and antioxidant defenses in aqueous humor are reduced, indirectly corroborating free radical production in the anterior chamber as a result of phacoemulsification. The inflammatory process consequent to the surgical procedure demonstrated by increased protein content in aqueous humor can also contribute to free radical production and ascorbic acid consumption.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether aqueous humor flare, measured by use of laser flaremetry, was proportional to aqueous humor protein concentration and to use laser flaremetry to evaluate disruption of the blood-aqueous barrier (BAB) in cats. ANIMALS: 30 healthy adult cats. PROCEDURE: Laser flaremetry values for all eyes were compared with aqueous humor protein concentrations determined by use of a Coomassie blue microprotein assay. Laser flaremetry was then performed on both eyes before (0 hours) and 4, 8, and 26 hours after initiation of topical application of 2% pilocarpine (q 8 h) to 1 eye of 9 cats or paracentesis of the anterior chamber of 1 eye of 8 cats. Intraocular pressure and pupil size were also determined. Aqueous humor protein concentration was extrapolated from flare values by use of linear regression. RESULTS: There was a linear relationship between flare values and aqueous humor protein concentrations. Topical application of 2% pilocarpine and paracentesis of the anterior chamber caused a breakdown of the BAB that was detected by use of laser flaremetry. The highest mean flare readings after application of pilocarpine or paracentesis were 24.4 and 132.8 pc/ms, respectively, which corresponded to aqueous humor protein concentrations of 85.5 and 434.9 mg/dl, respectively. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Paracentesis of the anterior chamber resulted in a more severe breakdown of the BAB in cats than topical application of 2% pilocarpine. Laser flaremetry may be a useful clinical method to detect increases in aqueous flare and, hence, disruptions of the BAB in cats.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo compare the corneal anaesthetic effect of 0.5% bupivacaine, 2% lidocaine and 0.4% oxybuprocaine on normal equine eyes.Study designProspective, blinded crossover study.AnimalsA group of 10 clinically healthy horses.MethodsCorneal sensitivity was determined in each eye by measuring corneal touch threshold (CTT). The study had three phases. Each subject was randomly given one of the three treatments followed by a 72 hour washout period. Every horse received all treatments. Baseline CTT was recorded prior to anaesthetic instillation (T0) then CTT was measured 5 and 10 minutes after (T1 and T2, respectively), then 20 to 90 minutes (T3 to T10) at 10 minute intervals. CTT data were compared among treatments at each time point using the Friedman test p < 0.05.ResultsMedian (range) baseline CTT was 51.3 (25.0–60.0) mm for bupivacaine, 50.0 (40.0–55.0) mm for oxybuprocaine and 55.0 (30.0–60.0) mm for lidocaine. All treatments caused a significant decrease in CTT at T1. The lowest CTT was observed at T3 with bupivacaine and oxybuprocaine treatments. Median CTTs at this time point were 18.7 (5.0–25.0) mm and 28.7 (25.0–40.0) mm, respectively. The lowest CTT with lidocaine treatment was 28.7 (20.0–50.0) mm at T6 (50 minutes). At T3, CTT was significantly lower with the bupivacaine treatment compared with oxybuprocaine and lidocaine treatments (p < 0.0074). There was no significant difference in CTT values between T1 and T6 for bupivacaine, between T1 and T7 for lidocaine, and between T1 and T8 for oxybuprocaine. Duration of the maximum effect was 45 minutes for the bupivacaine, 55 minutes for the lidocaine and 65 minutes for the oxybuprocaine treatment. Conclusions and clinical relevanceAdministration of a 0.5% injectable solution of bupivacaine or a 2% lidocaine had similar anaesthetic effect to the commonly used oxybuprocaine. Therefore, they might be used as alternatives for corneal anaesthesia.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To identify visual outcome and postoperative complications following phacoemulsification of equine cataracts. ANIMALS: Records of 39 horses (55 eyes) with cataracts were reviewed. METHODS: Eyes with cataracts removed by phacoemulsification were included in the study. Data collected included age, breed, sex, stage and etiology of cataract, unilateral vs. bilateral involvement, and ultrasound findings. Horses were grouped by etiology of the cataract. Visual outcome and complications were evaluated for each group and the overall population. RESULTS: Immediately postoperatively 46 out of 47 eyes (98%) were sighted. Four weeks postoperatively 23 of 29 operated eyes (79%) were sighted [13/18 (72%) eyes with congenital/juvenile onset, 6/6 (100%) eyes with traumatic and 4/5 (90%) eyes with uveitis-induced cataracts], with 18 eyes lost to follow-up. The most common postoperative complications included corneal edema (19 eyes/40%), fibrin in the anterior chamber (11 eyes/23%), postoperative ocular hypertension (9 eyes/19%), synechia/dyscoria (9 eyes/19%), and hyphema (7 eyes/15%). CONCLUSIONS: Prognosis for vision is favorable for horses following phacoemulsification and planned posterior continuous tear circular capsulorrhexis. Success rates depend on age of patient, cause of cataract and pre-existing intraocular disease. The highest success rate occurred in eyes with traumatic cataracts.  相似文献

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of a novel, professionally manufactured, frontal sinus valved glaucoma shunt in maintaining normal intraocular pressure (IOP) and vision in dogs with primary glaucoma. METHODS: Three eyes of three dogs diagnosed with primary glaucoma were included in this prospective clinical study. A Cullen frontal sinus valved glaucoma shunt was implanted into each glaucomatous globe. Dogs were treated postoperatively with topical neomycin/polymyxin B/0.1% dexamethasone and 0.03% flurbiprofen every 6 h tapered over 8-12 weeks, and meloxicam at 0.1 mg/kg orally every 24 h for 7-10 days. IOP, intracameral shunt position and apparent patency, and vision were assessed twice daily for up to 4 (n= 3 eyes) and 10 (n= 2 eyes) days postoperatively, and then at re-examination periods of up to 36 weeks (n= 1 eye). Postoperative complications were recorded and documented photographically. RESULTS: Normal IOP was maintained in all shunted globes (range 10-29 mmHg; mean = 16.7 mmHg at 24 h; IOP = 23 mmHg at 36 weeks) postoperatively for 2 days (3/3 eyes), 8 weeks (2/2 eyes), and 36 weeks (1/1 eye) without additional antiglaucoma therapies. Photopic vision and shunt position and patency were maintained in all shunted globes for all follow-up periods. Postoperative complications included mild aqueous flare and fibrin (n= 3 eyes for 3-10 days postoperatively); intracameral shunt occlusion with fibrin (n= 1 eye at days 2 and 4); partial anterior chamber tube extrusion (n= 1 eye at day 4), and focal corneal edema (n= 1 eye at 18 weeks). Tissue plasminogen activator injected intracamerally through the silicone tube near the frontal sinus effectively resolved the fibrinous shunt occlusion. CONCLUSIONS: The Cullen frontal sinus valved glaucoma shunt shows promise for the management of canine primary glaucoma.  相似文献

Contact in vivo wide-field specular microscopy was performed on right eyes of 20 healthy dogs after sodium hyaluronate (1%, n = 5), sodium chondroitin sulfate (4%) and sodium hyaluronate (3%, n = 5), hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (2%, n = 5), or balanced salt solution (control, n = 5) was injected into the anterior chamber. Using computerized morphometric analysis and pachymetry, changes in endothelial cell density, cell morphologic features, and corneal thickness from baseline values were evaluated at postinjection hour (PIH) 72 and PIH 168. Changes were not seen in endothelial cell density or cell morphologic features in any treated eye. The mean corneal thickness of all treated eyes at PIH 72 increased 6%, significantly greater than that of the nontreated eyes (P = 0.03). Mean corneal thickness of treated and nontreated eyes was similar at baseline and PIH 168 in all treatment groups.  相似文献

Bovine herpesvirus type 5 (BHV-5) infection in calves causes meningoencephalitis, a fatal disease highly prevalent in South America. To study the pathogenesis of BHV-5 infection in cattle, 12 calves (group 1: acute infection) and 11 calves (group 2: latent infection) were intranasally inoculated with an Argentinean BHV-5 isolate at 10(8) and 10(4.7) tissue culture infective doses, respectively; six calves (control group) were mock infected. At 3 months postinoculation, all of the calves in group 2 and three calves in group 3 were given dexamethasone to reactivate the virus. The animals were euthanatized between days 6 and 17 postinoculation (group 1) and between days 6 and 16 postreactivation (group 2). Seventy-five percent and 91% of animals in groups 1 and 2, respectively, excreted BHV-5 in nasal and ocular discharges. Following dexamethasone administration, 45% of calves shed virus in both types of secretions. Spontaneous virus reactivation and shedding was observed in one calf. Neurologic signs consisting of circling, teeth grinding, ptyalism, jaw chomping, tongue protrusion, and apathy were observed in two animals in group 1 and, during the reactivation period, in four animals in group 2. Macroscopic findings consisted of softening of the cerebral tissue, meningeal hemorrhages and swelling, and edema and hemorrhages of prescapular, retropharyngeal and submandibular lymph nodes. Histologic lesions consisted of meningitis, mononuclear perivascular cuffing, neuronophagia, satellitosis, gliosis, hemorrhage, and necrosis and edema. Lesions in anterior cerebral cortex, medulla, and pons were consistently seen in all the animals of group 1. In the acutely infected animals, lesions in the diencephalon appeared at day 10 postinoculation, whereas in the latently infected calves these lesions were observed as early as at day 6 postreactivation. Latently infected animals developed lesions simultaneously in anterior cortex, medulla, pons, and diencephalon, showing a remarkable difference from the acutely infected group. Trigeminal ganglionitis appeared relatively early in animals of both groups (day 7 postinoculation in group 1 and day 8 postreactivation in group 2).  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of topical application of a 1% morphine sulfate solution (MSS) on signs of pain and wound healing in dogs with corneal ulcers and examine normal corneas immunohistochemically for the presence of mu and delta opioid receptors. ANIMALS: 12 dogs. PROCEDURE: A 7-mm superficial corneal ulcer was surgically created in the right eye (OD) of 10 dogs, after which gentamicin solution and 1% MSS (n = 6) or saline solution (4) was administered topically OD 3 times daily. Blepharospasm, tearing, conjunctival hyperemia, aqueous flare, esthesiometer readings, and pupil size were recorded before and 30 minutes after treatment in all dogs. Ulcer size and days to completion of healing were recorded. Corneas from 4 treated and 3 control dogs were evaluated histologically. Normal canine corneas from 2 dogs not used in the study were evaluated immunohistochemically for the presence of mu and delta opioid receptors. RESULTS: Dogs treated with MSS had significantly less blepharospasm and lower esthesiometer readings than did control dogs. Duration of ulcer healing and findings of histologic evaluation of corneas did not differ between groups. Numerous delta and infrequent mu opioid receptors were identified in the corneal epithelium and anterior stroma of normal corneas. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Topical use of 1% MSS in dogs with corneal ulcers provided analgesia and did not interfere with normal wound healing. Both mu and delta opioid receptors were identified in normal corneas of dogs, although the mu receptors were present only in small numbers.  相似文献

A Boston Terrier puppy presented with a full-thickness peripheral corneal defect, iris prolapse and anterior lens capsule tear in the left eye (OS). Phacofragmentation and primary repair of the corneal laceration was performed. At surgery, subluxation of the lens was also apparent. One day postoperative, there was severe corneal edema, diffuse hyphema, an intraocular pressure (IOP) of 65 mmHg and a small amount of vitreous that protruded from the corneal incision OS. Malignant glaucoma or pupillary block glaucoma were suspected. Intravenous mannitol was administered preoperatively and had no effect. An anterior vitrectomy was performed on the vitreous within the anterior chamber and pupil. One day postoperative the IOP was 16 mmHg in the right eye (OD) and 20 mmHg OS. Postoperative iridocyclitis was managed medically, and additional elevations in IOP were not recorded. Resolution of the elevated IOP following anterior vitrectomy was supportive of pupillary block or malignant glaucoma. Vision returned 3 weeks after the initial surgery. Two years after the initial injury, the eye is visual and comfortable with infrequent topical anti-inflammatory therapy.  相似文献

Purpose These studies examined corneal healing rates, Type‐IV collagen and zonula occludens membrane‐associated protein (ZO‐1) expression, as well as aqueous PGE2 and IL‐1β concentrations in pigmented rabbits treated with either moxifloxacin 0.5%, gatifloxacin 0.3% or BSS® following anterior keratectomy. Methods Anterior keratectomy surgery was followed by topical administration with commercial ophthalmic formulations of either moxifloxacin or gatifloxacin or BSS® (TID for 96 h). Images of the fluorescein‐stained healing corneas were analyzed for wound area. At 48 or 96 h following surgery, aqueous humor samples were collected and analyzed for the inflammatory mediators PGE2 and IL‐1β using an ELISA. The corneas were subsequently evaluated using both scanning and transmission electron microscopy. In a second parallel study, corneas were evaluated at both 48 and 96 h for Type‐IV collagen and ZO‐1 expression using immunohistochemistry. Results Fluorescein‐stained corneal images at 96 h postsurgery demonstrated that 90% ± 8% re‐epithelialization for moxifloxacin, 81% ± 14% for gatifloxacin, and 88 ± 6% for BSS® (P > 0.05). PGE2 levels in the aqueous humor of fluoroquinolone treated eyes were reduced at 48 h compared to BSS® treated eyes. IL‐1β was undetectable in all samples. No differences in Type‐IV collagen or ZO‐1 expression were observed between any treatment groups. There were no differences between groups in histological appearance or in ultrastructural healing processes. Conclusions These studies demonstrated that the commercial ophthalmic formulations of moxifloxacin and gatifloxacin were similar to each other in their effects on the levels of aqueous humor PGE2 and rates of corneal wound re‐epithelialization.  相似文献

Introduction The uniform distribution of collagen fibrils and proteoglycans maintain the transparency of normal cornea. We describe the ultrastructural features of camel cornea including collagen fibrils and proteoglycans (PGs). Methods Camel corneas (of 6‐, 8‐, and 10‐month‐old animals) were fixed in 2.5% glutaraldehyde containing cuprolinic blue in sodium acetate buffer and processed for electron microscopy. The ‘AnalySIS LS Professional’ program was used to analyze the collagen fibril diameter. Results The camel cornea consists of four layers: the epithelium (227 μm), stroma (388 μm), Descemet’s membrane (DM), and endothelium. The epithelium constituted 36% of the camel cornea, whereas corneal stroma constituted 62% of the corneal thickness (629 μm). The PGs in the posterior stroma were significantly larger in number and size compared with the anterior and middle stroma. The collagen fibril diameter was 25 nm and interfibrillar spacing 40 nm. Fibrillar structures are present throughout the DM. Conclusion The structure of the camel cornea is very different from human and other animals. The unique structure of the cornea might be an adaptation to help the camel to survive in a hot and dry climate. The camel cornea may also be a good model to study the effect of hot and dry climates on the cornea.  相似文献

Silicone tubing was used to divert aqueous humor from the anterior chamber of the right eye to the rostral compartment of the right frontal sinus in four clinically normal mixed-breed dogs. Biomicroscopic examination, and pneumoapplanation tonometry and tonography, completed for up to 18 weeks postoperatively, confirmed gonioimplant function in all four cases. The dogs were euthanized at 6, 8, 16 and 18 weeks postoperatively. Gonioimplant patency was further confirmed by postmortem examination of the globes, implants and frontal sinuses. Gross and light microscopic examinations revealed iridal attachments to the implant ( n  = 4), mild anterior uveitis ( n  = 3), anterior subcapsular cataracts ( n  = 4), and focal corneal ( n  = 3) and scleral ( n  = 3) scarring in the operated globes. Light microscopic examination of frontal sinus specimens revealed mild lymphocytic proliferation and fibrosis immediately adjacent to the implant entrance site. There were no bacteria detected on aerobic or anaerobic cultures of the frontal sinuses or light microscopic examination of the globes or frontal sinuses. Results indicate that the frontal sinus shunting of aqueous humor is a safe and effective means of extraorbital aqueous diversion with potential applicability in the management of glaucoma.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this retrospective study was to summarize the most frequent clinical signs, ultrasonographic, and histological findings accompanying scleral rupture as a result of blunt trauma in dogs, cats, and horses. ANIMALS STUDIED AND PROCEDURES: Thirty small animals and three horses diagnosed with scleral rupture resulting from blunt trauma. B-mode ultrasonography was performed on 20 animals. Histopathology was carried out on 18 enucleated globes. RESULTS: In small animals, 80% presented hyphema, 60% subconjunctival hemorrhage, and 53% eyelid and conjunctival swelling. In horses, 100% presented eyelid and conjunctival swelling, 67% hyphema, subconjunctival hemorrhage, and collapsed anterior chamber. Ultrasonographic findings were an area with ill-defined scleral margins (90%), echoic/hyperechoic contents in the anterior and posterior chamber (55%) and in the vitreous (80%). In small animals, scleral rupture location noted on gross examination was: at the posterior pole (4), close to the optic nerve (3), near the limbus (2), and in the dorsal aspect of the globe (1). In horses, the lesion was located at the limbus (3). In small animals, histopathology showed presence of hemorrhage in the anterior, posterior chamber, and vitreous (94%), retinal detachment (94%), choroidal edema and hemorrhages (88%), and choroidal detachment as a result of suprachoroidal hemorrhage (88%). The same lesions were found in the globes of two horses. In small animals, rupture location noted on histopathology was: at the posterior pole (8), close to the optic nerve (4), near the limbus (1), near the ciliary body (1). CONCLUSIONS: The most frequent clinical signs observed were hyphema, subconjunctival hemorrhage, and eyelid and conjunctival swelling. Ultrasonographic findings suggestive for scleral rupture were ill-defined scleral borders and/or echoic/hyperechoic material in the cavities of the globe. On histopathology, lesions severely altering the anatomy of the eye structures were: hemorrhage into the chambers of the globe, subretinal and suprachoroidal hemorrhage leading to retinal and choroidal detachment, respectively. In small animals, the most frequent locations for scleral rupture were the posterior pole and close to the optic nerve, whereas in horses it was the limbus.  相似文献

A 14-year-old, female spayed Domestic Short-haired cat was presented for evaluation of progressive superficial corneal ulceration with mucoid ocular discharge, blepharospasm, and conjunctival hyperemia OD. Upon examination, ulcerative keratitis with stromal loss, chemosis, corneal edema, miosis, aqueous flare, and hyphema were noted. Corneal cytology revealed branching, septate fungal hyphae with bulbous terminations and associated ovoid structures, with suppurative inflammation. Fungal culture of corneal swabs confirmed the presence of Acremonium, although PCR of the cytology sample was negative. Ten days of treatment with topical 1% miconazole resulted in clinical deterioration before switching to topical 1% voriconazole solution, which was successful in resolving the infection. The apparent clinical efficacy of the topical antifungals used contrasted with the in vitro susceptibility profile.  相似文献

The alterations due to the long-term degeneration and regeneration of the rabbit facial nerve were investigated. The facial nerve was blocked with conventional lidocaine and bupivacaine solutions. The rabbits were sacrificed and facial nerves were removed 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks after the administration of normal saline, lidocaine and bupivacaine. The samples were then processed for electron microscopic observation. Degenerations were seen 2-4 weeks after the injection of normal saline, lidocaine and bupivacaine. In the normal saline group the regeneration process was observed after 6 weeks, whereas in the lidocaine and bupivacaine groups this process was first noticed after 8 weeks. In the lidocaine and bupivacaine groups, regeneration was not completed at the end of 8 weeks; however, it was faster in the bupivacaine group. Bupivacaine is therefore suggested as the drug of choice for neural blockade as it caused less damage and a faster regeneration.  相似文献
