A survey of N2 fixation in farmers’ fields of Northern (>1,000 mm rainfall), Central (800–1,000 mm rainfall), and Southern (<800 mm rainfall) Zambia revealed some significant differences in plant growth and symbiotic performance of different food grain legumes. Of the three grain legumes (i.e., Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea L. Verdc.), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.), and groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.)) grown in Southern Zambia, cowpea showed greater shoot biomass and significantly lower shoot δ15N values than groundnut and Bambara groundnut. The lower shoot δ15N resulted in greater %Ndfa (59%) in shoots and higher amounts of N-fixed, whether per square meters (6,394.0 mg N), per plant (650.8 mg N), or per hectare (63.9 kg N) relative to groundnut and Bambara groundnut, even though the number of cowpea plants per square meter was significantly lower than that of groundnut or Bambara groundnut. Although the shoot δ15N values of cowpea, Bambara groundnut and common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were significantly lower than those of groundnut in Central Zambia and their %Ndfa values, therefore, greater, the higher number of groundnut plants per square meter resulted in significantly greater shoot N content, as well as N-fixed per square meter and per hectare relative to the other species. Despite having similar plant density as cowpea in Central Zambia, common bean could fix only 6.0 kg N ha−1 compared with 35.4 kg N ha−1 by cowpea. In Northern Zambia, Bambara groundnut showed the lowest mean shoot δ15N value (0.54 ± 0.3‰), followed by groundnut (1.59 ± 1.0‰), and then common bean (the three grain legumes grown in that region). As a result, %Ndfa and N-fixed were significantly greater in groundnut (69.7% and 566.0 mg N per plant) and Bambara groundnut (62.9% and 440.1 mg N per plant) than in common bean (2.6% and 2.4 mg N per plant). In Northern Zambia, groundnut, Bambara groundnut and common bean fixed 78.7, 67.6, and 0.9 kg N ha−1, respectively, even though the plant density per square meter of common bean (which fixed the lowest amount of N per hectare) was twice that of groundnut and Bambara groundnut. A species × site analysis showed that cowpea fixed relatively greater amounts of N per plant, per square meter, and per hectare in Southern than Central Zambia. Bambara groundnut and common bean also had significantly lower δ15N values and higher %Ndfa in Central than Northern Zambia.  相似文献

Grain legumes, including cowpea, are the cheapest sources of minerals and protein to enhance human nutrition. Cultivar development and deployment of cowpea with increased grain mineral content and protein composition rely on selection of genetically unique and complementary breeding lines. The objective of this study was to assess the grain minerals and protein composition of diverse cowpea collections of eastern, southern and western Africa to select promising parents to develop a breeding population. Twenty-two genetically diverse cowpea genotypes were field evaluated using a randomised complete block design with three replications in two locations in South Africa. The dried grain mineral contents were determined using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometre, while the protein content was determined by the combustion method. Analyses of variance showed significant (P?<?0.05) effects of genotypes, locations and their interactions. The test genotypes showed considerable variation for the following nine mineral contents: calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), sodium (Na), phosphorus (P), and zinc (Zn) varying from 0.07 to 0.12?mg?kg?1; 4.46 to 7.81?mg?kg?1; 0.06 to 0.11?g; 11.82 to 14.45?g; 1.86 to 2.27?g; 9.24 to 13.30?mg?kg?1; 0.26 to 0.80?g; 4.63 to 5.92?g and 0.03.00 to 0.05?g, respectively. Further, the total protein content varied from 23.16 to 28.13%. Significant correlations were detected among some mineral elements and total protein content, suggesting the possibility of simultaneous selection for these traits. The principal component analysis (PCA) identified four principal components (PCs) contributing to 70.93% of the total explained variation amongst genotypes. Overall the following genotypes with desirable grain mineral and protein attributes were selected: IT90K-59 (Ca), 98K-5301 (Ca and protein), ITOOK-1060 (Cu), ITOOK-1217 and IT845-2246 (Fe), Bensogla (K, Na, and P), TVU11424 and ITOOK-1217 (Mg), CH14 (Mn and Na), TVU12637 (Mn) and Glenda and Vuli (Zn). The selected cowpea genotypes are useful genetic resources for population and cultivar development for grain nutrients composition.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) deposition to the ocean is thought to be increasing worldwide, but the amount of coastal and open ocean measurements is very limited. In this paper, we assess N deposition in the coastal zone of Cayo Coco, in central Cuba, during a multi-annual period (2005–2007). Wet and dry N depositions were estimated based on the NH4+ and NOx concentrations in the rain. Cold fronts and troughs, coming from the west, contributed most to rain (41%) and to N deposition, followed by tropical waves and storms coming from the east, which caused 31% of the rain. Average concentrations of NH4+ and NOx in the rain were 8.8 and 8.3 μM. NOx presented a clearly decreasing trend (0.26 μM per month), decreasing by half during 2005–2007. Total N deposition averaged 3.23 kg N ha−1 year−1, similar to that found in Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, but lower than previously measured in Cuba and in nearby areas of the USA and than model predictions for the oceanic region around Cuba. These low values and the decreasing trend found are attributed to drastic reduction of fossil fuel and fertilizer use in Cuba since 1990. Because land input has decreased even more drastically, deposition seems to be nowadays the most important N source to the coastal zone of Cayo Coco. The δ15N range of seagrass (Thalassia testudinum) and macroalgae (Penicillus dumetosus) in the area (−1.83‰ to 3.02‰ and +1.02‰ to +4.17‰, respectively) sustain that atmospheric sources (deposition and N2 fixation) comprise 70–90% of the N budget.  相似文献

The symbiotic fixation of atmospheric nitrogen by leguminous plants in the alpine community of a lichen heath at the Teberda State Biosphere Reserve is well adapted to low soil temperature characteristic for the altitude of 2800 m a.s.l. For the determination of the N fixation by isotopic methods (the method of the natural 15N abundance and the method of isotopic 15N dilution), Trifolium polyphyllum was taken as the control plant. This plant was used as it does not form symbiosis with the nitrogen-fixing bacteria in the highlands of the Northern Caucasus Region. The contribution of the N fixation to the N nutrition of different leguminous plant species as determined by the natural 15N abundance method amounted to 28–73% at δ15N0 = 0‰ and 46–117% at δ15N0 = −1‰; for the determination of the N fixation by the method of the isotopic label’s dilution, it was 34–97%. The best correlation of the results obtained by these two isotopic methods was observed for the natural fractionation of the N isotopes in the course of the N fixation in the range of −0.5 to −0.7‰. The determination of the nitrogenase activity of the roots by the acetylene method confirmed the absence of N fixation in T. polyphyllum and its different contribution to the N nutrition of different species of leguminous plants.  相似文献

The effect of reduced tillage (RT) on nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions of soils from fields with root crops under a temperate climate was studied. Three silt loam fields under RT agriculture were compared with their respective conventional tillage (CT) field with comparable crop rotation and manure application. Undisturbed soil samples taken in September 2005 and February 2006 were incubated under laboratory conditions for 10 days. The N2O emission of soils taken in September 2005 varied from 50 to 1,095 μg N kg−1 dry soil. The N2O emissions of soils from the RT fields taken in September 2005 were statistically (P < 0.05) higher or comparable than the N2O emissions from their respective CT soil. The N2O emission of soils taken in February 2006 varied from 0 to 233 μg N kg−1 dry soil. The N2O emissions of soils from the RT fields taken in February 2006 tended to be higher than the N2O emissions from their respective CT soil. A positive and significant Pearson correlation of the N2O–N emissions with nitrate nitrogen (NO3 –N) content in the soil was found (P < 0.01). Leaving the straw on the field, a typical feature of RT, decreased NO3 –N content of the soil and reduced N2O emissions from RT soils.  相似文献

In cowpea, efficient N2‐fixing genotypes are being selected to promote sustainable cropping systems in southern Cameroon (SC). However, N2 fixation and growth of these genotypes are largely hampered by low levels of soil plant‐available P. To evaluate the genotypic variation in N2 fixation and P uptake among cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) genotypes, field experiments were conducted over two years on two acid soils low in available P. The experiments were laid out in a split‐block design with four replications on typic (TK) and rhodic (RK) Kandiudult soils with seven cowpea genotypes. Phosphorus (P) fertilizers were applied on the main plots with 0 kg P, 30 kg P ha–1 as triple superphosphate (TSP) and 90 kg P ha–1 as Togo phosphate rock (PR). Nodule dry matter (DM), shoot DM, grain yield, and P uptake of cowpea significantly varied with site, P application, and genotype (p < 0.05). The N2 fixation of the cowpea genotypes ranged from 29 to 51 kg N ha–1 on both TK and RK soils and was significantly increased with P application. Significant genotypic variations in N2 fixation were observed with superior ability of the genotypes IT89KD‐391 and IT90K‐59 to fix N2. The harvest index (HI) did not significantly differ between soils and P application levels (p > 0.05). Four genotypes were selected to investigate root mechanisms responsible for efficient P acquisition in pot experiments. The results suggest that a better root infection by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in genotype IT90K‐59 and root morphological and physiological characteristics in IT89KD‐391 were the most important factors for increasing P uptake.  相似文献

A greenhouse experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of a P application (0 vs. 50 mg P kg-1) on yield, nodulation, and N2 fixation by three cowpea cultivars (Soronko, Amantin, and IT81D-1137) using the 15N isotope-dilution method. When P was not applied the inoculated cowpea genotypes showed significant differences (Soronko>Amantin> IT81D-1137) in N accumulation, in contrast to the uninoculated cowpea cultivars, which accumulated similar amounts of N. The differences in shoot N in inoculated plants were thus caused by differences in N2 fixation. The average values of N fixed (for both P levels) were 74% in Soronko, 59% in Amantin, and 42% in IT81D-1137, corresponding to 80, 51, and 24 mg N plant-1, respectively. Inoculation increased the total shoot-N accumulation in cv. Soronko by 270% without P and by 204% with P, cv. Amantin by 152 and 104%, and cv. IT81D-1137 by 74 and 58%, respectively. With P, the % N derived from atmosphere (%Ndfa) was 42% for IT81D-1137, 62% for Amantin, and 76% for Soronko. The high value for Soronko indicates that in a soil of medium fertility, certain cowpea cultivars are capable of satisfying their total N requirement through N2 fixation. The P effect on N2 fixation was mainly in the total amount of N fixed rather than on the percentage derived from the atmosphere.  相似文献

The response of faba bean to the application of four rates of gypsum (0, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0 t ha−1) to a non-saline, alkaline sodic soil was measured in terms of grain yield, dry matter (DM) production, N accumulation and the proportional dependence of the legume on symbiotic N2 fixation (P atm). A yield-independent, time-integrated 15N-dilution model was used to estimate symbiotic dependence. A significant decrease in the exchangeable sodium percentage and significant increases in exchangeable Ca++ and the Ca++:Mg++ ratio in the 0–10-cm soil layer were measured 30 months after application of 10 t ha−1 gypsum. Despite low and erratic rainfall during crop growth, faba bean DM and N uptake responded positively to gypsum application. The symbiotic dependence of the legume at physiological maturity was little affected by sodicity (P atm = 0.74 at zero gypsum and 0.81–0.82 at 2.5–10 t ha−1 gypsum). The increase in fixed N due to gypsum application was mainly due to increases in legume DM and total N uptake. At 10 t ha−1 of gypsum, faba bean fixed more than 200 kg N ha−1 in above-ground biomass.  相似文献

Different theories have been brought forward to explain the commonly observed δ15N enrichment with depth in soil profiles, including the discrimination against 15N during N decomposition and the buildup of 15N-enriched microbial residues. A combination of soil organic matter (SOM) size and density fractionations, 15N determinations, and phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analyses was conducted on soils from a pristine N-limited Nothofagus forest in southern Chile. The purpose of this study was to investigate which SOM fractions mostly reflect the 15N-enrichment pattern and to link 15N SOM enrichment with microbial community composition. Nitrogen-15 enrichments were greater for the microaggregate (<150 μm) than for the macroaggregate (>150 μm) size fraction, with Rayleigh isotope enrichment factors averaging −8.5‰ and −3.7‰, respectively. The macro-organic matter density fractions (>150 μm) showed intermediate enrichment factors of −5.1‰ and −7.3‰ for the light (<1.37 g cm−3) and heavy (>1.37 g cm−3) fraction, respectively. The abundance of fungal and bacterial PLFAs was significantly higher in the microaggregate compared to the macroaggregate size fraction, but their relative abundance did not change between aggregate size fractions. Our data link differential 15N enrichment of SOM fractions to “total” microbial abundance and, as such, corroborates existing theories of microbial-induced 15N enrichment. Isotopic fractionation during microbial N decomposition processes alone could not explain the large 15N enrichment in the microaggregate size fraction (−8.5‰) and the heavy density fraction (−7.3‰). We therefore suggest that microbial turnover and accretion of 15N-enriched microbial (especially fungal) compounds was an additional driver for 15N enrichment of this soil profile.  相似文献

Atmospheric biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) by cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) and groundnut (Arachis hypogea) was evaluated using a 2-year (2000–2001) experiment with different fertilizer treatments. The 15N isotopic dilution method with a nonfixing cowpea as test reference crop was used. The effects of the two legumes on soil N availability and succeeding sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) yields were measured. Groundnut was found to fix 8 to 23 kg N ha-1 and the percentage of N derived from the atmosphere varied from 27 to 34%. Cowpea fixed 50 to 115 kg N ha−1 and the percentage of N derived from the atmosphere varied from 52 to 56%. Compared to mineral NPK fertilizer alone, legumes fixed more N from the atmosphere when dolomite or manure was associated with mineral fertilizers. Compared to soluble phosphate, phosphate rock increased BNF by cowpea. Significant correlation (p<0.05, R 2=0.94) was observed between total N yields of legumes and total N derived from the atmosphere. Compared to monocropping of sorghum, the soils of cowpea–sorghum and groundnut–sorghum rotations increased soil mineral N from 15 and 22 kg N ha−1, respectively. Cowpea–sorghum and groundnut–sorghum rotations doubled N uptake and increased succeeding sorghum yields by 290 and 310%, respectively. Results suggested that, despite their ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen, N containing fertilizers (NPK) are recommended for the two legumes. The applications of NPK associated with dolomite or cattle manure or NK fertilizer associated with phosphate rock were the better recommendations that improved BNF, legumes, and succeeding sorghum yields.  相似文献

The following six pig slurries obtained after acidification and/or solid/liquid separation were used in the research: original (S) and acidified (AS) pig slurry, nonacidified (LF) and acidified (ALF) pig slurry liquid fraction, and nonacidified (SF) and acidified (ASF) pig slurry solid fraction. Laboratory incubations were performed to assess the effect of the application of these slurries on N mineralization and CO2 and N2O emissions from a sandy soil. Acidification maintained higher NH4 +-N contents in soil particularly in the ALF-treated soil where NH4 +-N contents were two times higher than in LF-treated soil during the 55–171-day interval. At the end of the incubation (171 days), 32.9 and 24.2 mg N kg−1 dry soil were mineralized in the ASF- and SF-treated soils, respectively, but no mineralization occurred in LF- and S-treated soils, although acidification decreased N immobilization in ALF- (−25.3 mg N kg−1 soil) and AS- (−12.7 mg N kg−1 soil) compared to LF- (−34.4 mg N kg−1 soil) and S-treated (−18.6 mg N kg−1 soil) soils, respectively. Most of the dissolved CO2 was lost during the acidification process. More than 90% of the applied C in the LF-treated soil was lost during the incubation, indicating a high availability of the added organic compounds. Nitrous oxide emissions occurred only after day 12 and at a lower rate in soils treated with acidified than nonacidified slurries. However, during the first 61 days of incubation, 1,157 μg N kg−1 soil was lost as N2O in the AS-treated soil and only 937 in the S-treated soil.  相似文献

A baseline hydrogeochemical investigation was carried out as a contribution to the inventory of wetlands in Büyük Menderes River (BMR) coastal wetland which is the most important wetland in Turkey that is protected as “Natural Park” by government. In addition to the wetland values, agricultural activities are also important at this delta. From inland to coastal zone, the groundwater type is changed from Ca–HCO3 to Na–Cl. Perfect correlation of Cl with Na and SO4 indicated the mixing process between saline and fresh water. The seawater intrusion and “winter-leaching” is the main causes of salinization. Minor ions as B, Br, and Li versus Cl relationship also showed the marine influence at the BMR coastal wetland. The δ18O and δD composition of the waters are range between −8.11‰ and −1.65‰ and −49.2‰ and 8.1‰, respectively. Isotope values show the seawater mixing line and also dissolution of salts in the BMR coastal wetland. Weathering of aluminosilicates in the Paleozoic schist and clays resulted in the release of silica to the water. Due to the organic activity, iron concentrations reached to the tolerance limits. On the other hand, the use of phosphate fertilizers increases the phosphorus content in the water. The high value of As (from 0.6 to 134 μg/l) can be resulted as an evaporation process in the study area.  相似文献

Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) of 17 soybean cultivars was comparatively estimated by the δ15N natural abundance technique using two non-nodulation soybeans (Clay and Chippewa) as reference plants. A field study was established on the experimental farm of the University of Abomey-Calavi, Benin on a typical “terre de barre” soil classified by Food and Agriculture Organization-United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation as Rhodic Ferralsol. A nitrogen-free pot trial was also carried out using soil substrate sampled from the Atlantic Ocean beach. In the N-free medium, N content of the whole soybean cultivars ranged from 2.6 to 8.1 mg N per plant compared with an average of 1.8 mg N per plant observed with the non-fixing soybeans. Plant δ15N of the nodulating soybeans ranged from −2.7756‰ (Jupiter) to 0.1951‰ (Conquista), while the non-nodulating cultivars Chippewa and Clay had 2.67‰ and 9.30‰, respectively. Percentage and amount of N derived from air (Ndfa) were significantly different (P < 0.01) among soybean cultivars, and values depended highly on the selected reference plants. When Clay was used as the reference plant, the average percentage Ndfa was 1.4 times higher than when Chippewa was the reference plant. Both reference plants consistently ranked promiscuous soybean cvs. TG× 1894 3F and TG× 1908 8F as the best cultivars and cv. TG× 1888 29F as the least in percentage Ndfa, suggesting that any of the reference plants could be used in δ15N method for assessing N2-fixation. The two identified promiscuous soybean cultivars with greatest capacity to fix N could be included in a soybean extension program for West African farming systems.  相似文献

Crop residue and fertilizer management practices alter some soil properties, but the magnitude of change depends on soil type and climatic conditions. Field experiments with mainly barley (and canola, wheat, triticale, or pea in a few years) under conventional tillage were conducted from 1983 to 2009 at Breton (Gray Luvisol (Typic Haplocryalf) loam) and Ellerslie (Black Chernozem (Albic Argicryoll) clay loam), Alberta, Canada, to determine the effects of straw management (straw removed (S Rem) and straw retained (S Ret)) and N fertilizer rate (0, 25, 50, and 75 kg N ha−1) on total organic C (TOC) and N (TON), light fraction organic C (LFOC), and N (LFON) in the 0–7.5 and 7.5–15 cm, pH in the 0–7.5, 7.5–15, and 15–20 cm and extractable P, ammonium-N, and nitrate-N in the 0–15, 15–30, 30–60, and 60–90 cm soil layers. The S Ret and N fertilizer treatments usually had higher mass of TOC, TON, LFOC, and LFON in soil at Breton, but only of LFOC and LFON in soil at Ellerslie compared with the corresponding S Rem and zero-N control treatments. The responses of soil organic C and N to management practices were more pronounced for N fertilization than straw management. There were significant correlations among most soil organic C or N fractions, especially at Breton. Linear regressions between crop residue C or N input, or rate of fertilizer N applied and soil organic C or N were significant in most cases at Breton, but only for LFOC and LFON at Ellerslie. At Breton, compared with zero-N rate, the C sequestration efficiency of additional crop residue C input was 5.8%, 20.1%, and 20.4% in S Ret and 17.2%, 28.0%, and 30.1% in S Rem treatments at the 25, 50, and 75 kg N ha−1 rates, respectively. The effects of crop residue management and N fertilization on chemical properties were generally similar for both contrasting soil types. There was no effect of crop residue management on soil pH, extractable P and residual nitrate-N. Extractable P and pH in the top 0–15 cm soil decreased significantly with N application in both soil types. Residual nitrate-N (though quite low in Breton soil) increased with application of N and also indicated some downward movement in the soil profile up to 90 cm depth in Ellerslie soil. There was generally no effect of any treatment on ammonium-N in soil. In conclusion, straw retention and N application improved organic C and N in soil, and generally differences were more pronounced for light fraction than total organic C and N, and between the most extreme treatments (S Rem0 vs. S Ret75). Application of N fertilizer reduced extractable P and pH in the surface soil, and showed accumulation and downward leaching of nitrate-N in the soil profile.  相似文献

Crop residues with high C/N ratio immobilize N released during decomposition in soil, thus reducing N losses through leaching, denitrification, and nitrous oxide (N2O) emission. A laboratory incubation experiment was conducted for 84 days under controlled conditions (24°C and moisture content 55% of water-holding capacity) to study the influence of sugarcane, maize, sorghum, cotton and lucerne residues, and mineral N addition, on N mineralization–immobilization and N2O emission. Residues were added at the rate of 3 t C ha−1 to soil with, and without, 150 kg urea N ha−1. The addition of sugarcane, maize, and sorghum residues without N fertilizer resulted in a significant immobilization of soil N. Amended soil had significantly (P < 0.05) lower NO3–N, which reached minimum values of 2.8 mg N kg−1 for sugarcane (at day 28), 10.3 mg N kg−1 for maize (day 7), and 5.9 mg N kg−1 for sorghum (day 7), compared to 22.7 mg N kg−1 for the unamended soil (day 7). During 84 days of incubation, the total mineral N in the residues + N treatments were decreased by 45 mg N kg−1 in sugarcane, 34 mg kg−1 in maize, 29 mg kg−1 in sorghum, and 16 mg kg−1 in cotton amended soil compared to soil + N fertilizer, although soil NO3–N increased by 7 mg kg−1 in lucerne amended soil. The addition of residues also significantly increased amended soil microbial biomass C and N. Maximum emissions of N2O from crop residue amended soils occurred in the first 4–5 days of incubation. Overall, after 84 days of incubation, the cumulative N2O emission was 25% lower with cotton + N fertilizer, compared to soil + N fertilizer. The cumulative N2O emission was significantly and positively correlated with NO3–N (r = 0.92, P < 0.01) and total mineral N (r = 0.93, P < 0.01) after 84 days of incubation, and had a weak but significant positive correlation with cumulative CO2 in the first 3 and 5 days of incubation (r = 0.59, P < 0.05).  相似文献

Consumer demand for cleaned squid generates a substantial amount of waste that must be properly disposed of, creating an economic burden on processors. A potential solution to this problem involves converting squid by-products into an organic fertilizer, for which there is growing demand. Because fertilizer application to lawns can increase the risk of nutrient contamination of groundwater, we quantified leaching of NO3–N and PO4–P from perennial ryegrass turf (Lolium perenne L.) amended with two types of fertilizer: squid-based (SQ) and synthetic (SY). Field plots were established on an Enfield silt loam, and liquid (L) and granular (G) fertilizer formulations of squid and synthetic fertilizers were applied at 0, 48, 146, and 292 kg N ha−1 year−1. Levels of NO3–N and PO4–P in soil pore water from a depth of 60 cm were determined periodically during the growing season in 2008 and 2009. Pore water NO3–N levels were not significantly different among fertilizer type or formulation within an application rate throughout the course of the study. The concentration of NO3–N remained below the maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 mg L−1 until midSeptember 2009, when values above the MCL were observed for SQG at all application rates, and for SYL at the high application rate. Annual mass losses of NO3–N were below the estimated inputs (10 kg N ha−1 year−1) from atmospheric deposition except for the SQG and SYL treatments applied at 292 kg N ha−1 year−1, which had losses of 13.2 and 14.9 kg N ha−1 year−1, respectively. Pore water PO4–P levels ranged from 0 to 1.5 mg P L−1 and were not significantly different among fertilizer type or formulation within an application rate. Our results indicate that N and P losses from turf amended with squid-based fertilizer do not differ from those amended with synthetic fertilizers or unfertilized turf. Although organic in nature, squid-based fertilizer does not appear to be more—or less—environmentally benign than synthetic fertilizers.  相似文献

In a 1-year study, quantification of nitrous oxide (N2O) emission was made from a flood-irrigated cotton field fertilized with urea at 100kg N ha−1 a−1. Measurements were made during the cotton-growing season (May–November) and the fallow period (December–April). Of the total 95 sampling dates, 77 showed positive N2O fluxes (range, 0.1 to 33.3g N ha−1 d−1), whereas negative fluxes (i.e., N2O sink activity) were recorded on 18 occasions (range, −0.1 to −2.2g N ha−1 d−1). Nitrous oxide sink activity was more frequently observed during the growing season (15 out of 57 sampling dates) as compared to the fallow period (3 out of 38 sampling dates). During the growing season, contribution of N2O to the denitrification gaseous N products was much less (average, 4%) as compared to that during the fallow period (average, 21%). Nitrous oxide emission integrated over the 6-month growing period amounted 324g N ha−1, whereas the corresponding figure for the 6-month fallow period was 648g N ha−1. Subtracting the N2O sink activity (30.3g N ha−1 and 3.8g N ha−1 during the growing season and fallow period, respectively), the net N2O emission amounted 938g N ha−1 a−1. Results suggested that high soil moisture and temperature prevailing under flood-irrigated cotton in the Central Punjab region of Pakistan though favor high denitrification rates, but are also conducive to N2O reduction thus leading to relatively low N2O emission.  相似文献

Poultry (Gallus gallus domesticus L.) litter (PL) is a readily available nutrient source for crop production in the Southeast USA. Long-term PL application may alter availability of N and the effect may be dependent on tillage practice. Tillage [no till (NT) vs. conventional (CT)] and N source (PL vs. commercial fertilizer CF) effects on N availability and plant uptake were evaluated in years 9, 10, and 11 of a long-term cropping systems study at the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, J. Phil Campbell Sr. Natural Resource Conservation Center, Watkinsville, GA, USA. Mineral N in the top 10 cm, measured in situ, varied each year and was influenced by time, tillage, and N source. In 2003 (year 9), soil mineral N content was greater in CT–CF (100 kg ha−1) than in NT–PL (95 kg ha−1) but in 2004 (year 10) and 2005 (year 11) it was lower in CT–CF (93 and 60 kg ha−1) compared to NT–PL (140 and 71 kg ha−1). Nitrogen mineralization rates were generally greater for PL than for CF treatments with the difference being almost 1 kg ha−1 day−1 in 2003. Mineralization rates were greater for NT–PL compared to CT–CF in 2004 and 2005. Across the three growing seasons, corn (Zea mays L.) aboveground biomass was consistently greater in the NT–PL treatment than in the NT–CF and CT–CF treatments. Correlation between aboveground biomass and N mineralization was greater for PL than for CF (0.75 vs. 0.48). Patterns of N mineralization and total soil mineral N indicated that the distribution of N through the growing season more closely matched corn N demand in PL treatments. Results indicate that improved N availability through the growing season, by combining NT and PL, can result in more profitable corn production in the southeast.  相似文献

Legume biological nitrogen fixation is an environmentally friendly and economical means that can reduce low resource farmer dependence on expensive chemical nitrogen (N) fertilizers. We investigated the effect of two cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) varieties (IT95K-52-34, an international variety from IITA and Kang’au, a local variety) under an integrated soil fertility management trial on indigenous symbiotic rhizobia in a semi-arid farmer's field in eastern Kenya. The ox-ploughed field trial had the following treatments: an unamended control, manure applied at 2.5 t ha−1, triple superphosphate (TSP as (P2O5, 0:46:0) at 15 kg ha−1; and a combination of manure and TSP applied at the single rates. Soil samples were collected from each treatment during planting and harvesting of the cowpea crop and used in most probable number (MPN) plant infection assays with the two cowpea varieties as traphosts in Leonard jar growth systems and grown under glasshouse conditions. Generally, soil amendments enhanced cowpea rhizobial populations which varied from 4.89 × 102 rhizobia g−1 soil to 1.074 × 103 rhizobia g−1 soil. The highest shoot biomass accumulation occurred on cowpea variety IT95K-52-34 plants inoculated with soils from the manure applied plots. We isolated 150 fast- and slow-growing cowpea rhizobia. Contrary to most previous studies, the bulk (97%) of the isolates was fast growing which grouped into 9 types on the growth characteristics on yeast extract agar (YEMA). The study indicated that ISFM was important for rhizobia population build up over a cowpea-growing season.  相似文献

The impacts of fallow on soil fertility, crop production and climate-forcing gas emissions were determined in two contrasting legumes, Gliricidia sepium and Acacia colei, in comparison with traditional unamended fallow and continuous cultivation systems. After 2 years, the amount of foliar material produced did not differ between the two improved fallow species; however, grain yield was significantly elevated by 55% in the first and second cropping season after G. sepium compared with traditional fallow. By contrast, relative to the unamended fallow, a drop in grain yield was observed in the first cropping season after A. colei, followed by no improvement in the second. G. sepium had higher foliar N, K and Mg, while A. colei had lower foliar N but higher lignin and polyphenols. In the third year after fallow improvement, a simulated rainfall experiment was performed on soils to compare efflux of N2O and CO2. Improved fallow effects on soil nutrient composition and microbial activity were demonstrated through elevated N2O and CO2 efflux from soils in G. sepium fallows compared with other treatments. N2O emissions were around six times higher from this nitrogen-fixing soil treatment, evolving 69.9 ngN2O–N g−1soil h−1 after a simulated rainfall event, compared with only 8.5 and 4.8 ngN2O–N g−1soil h−1 from soil under traditional fallow and continuous cultivation, respectively. The findings indicate that selection of improved fallows for short-term fertility enhancement has implications for regional N2O emissions for dry land regions.  相似文献
