Summary The effect of the fruit ripening mutants rin, gr, nor and Nr on storage life and pigmentation was investigated in homozygous material, in heterozygous F1 combinations between the mutants with the colour mutant hp and with the normal cv. Kewalo. Crosses with nor showed a 3-to 5-fold increase in storage life in comparison with the normal cv. or with hp. Maximum pigmentation of the fruits of crosses with nor was pale-red with vineripened fruit and pink with fruit harvested at the breaker stage and ripened on the shelf. The ripening inhibitory effect of rin in the different F1 combinations was less pronounced than that of nor, and the colour of the fruits was improved. Fruits of the F1 cross between rin and nor showed greatly improved storage life and developed pink or pale red colour. Most heterozygotes with hp showed improved pigmentation. Problems anticipated in utilizing ripening mutants in breeding for improved keeping quality are discussed.  相似文献

In field trials on a fertile fluvisol in 1995 and 1996 near Göttingen, Germany, pea (Pisum sativum; cv. Messire/conventional leafed, cv. Profi/semileafless) and oats (Avena sativa; cv. Alf) were grown as sole crops and in substitutive mixtures. The sole crops were established at 80 pea seeds m?2 and 300 oat seeds m?2. The mixtures consisted of 67 % (pea) and 33 % (oats) of the monoculture densities, respectively. Interactions of cv. Messire or cv. Profi and oats were similar in 1995 and 1996. The mixtures outyielded the monocultures with respect to total above ground dry matter (RYT = 1.15) and grain yield (RYT = 1.09). Grain yield of pea and oats averaged 4.9 t ha?1 in monocultures and 5.5 t ha?1 in mixtures. Oats was relatively the stronger of the two competitors. Decreasing number of pods per plant could be highlighted as the factor for a lower pea seed frequency in the yield of the mixtures. For oats the number of panicles per plant and kernels per panicle were higher in the mixtures compared with the oat monocultures. The average amount of the harvest index (HI) was 0.52 for pea and 0.46 for oats. Favourable growth conditions increased HI values however, prolific vegetative growth in the mixtures resulted in lower HI values. The predicted RYT‐values estimate the maximum combined grain yield of 6.3 t ha?1 in the mixture of 87 % pea (70 seeds m?2) and 13 % oats (39 kernels m?2).  相似文献

While a diploid potato was continuously selfed by a function of Sli gene, the level of heterozygosity reduced, and the fertility also reduced (inbreeding depression), which might be improved because continuous selfing could eliminate undesirable recessive alleles. To explore what was occurring as advancing self-generations in terms of fertility, 51 plants of an S3 diploid potato family were evaluated for fertility-related traits and analyzed by RFLP markers. The level of heterozygosity was positively correlated with any of fertility-related traits (r = 0.108−0.333). At least six loci on six chromosome sections were associated with fertility-related quantitative trait loci (QTLs), of which three performed better in the heterozygotes and three in the homozygotes. By further continued selfing, QTLs performing better in heterozygotes were likely fixed to homozygotes with secondly better performance, and those performing better in homozygotes were fixed to the best genotypes. Thus, the selfed progenies were cryptically being improved for fertility by genetic fixation to the best or better genotypes in fertility-related QTLs.  相似文献

Stem fasciation is a morphological abnormality observed in plants where the stem is widened and leaves and flowers or pods are clustered at the apex. Several spontaneous mutants and one induced mutant for stem fasciation are found in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.). This study was aimed at determining allelic relationship between spontaneous and induced mutant genes controlling stem fasciation and effects of stem fasciation on grain yield. Two spontaneous (ICC 2042 and ICC 5645) and one induced (JGM 2) stem fasciation mutants were crossed in all combinations, excluding reciprocals. The F1 and F2 plants from a cross between the two spontaneous mutants had fasciated stem. This indicated the presence of a common gene (designated fas1) for stem fasciation in the two spontaneous mutants. The F1s of the crosses of the induced mutant JGM 2 with both spontaneous mutants had normal plants and segregated in a ratio of 9 normal : 7 fasciated plants in F2. Thus, the gene for stem fasciation in the induced mutant JGM 2 (designated fas2) is not allelic to the common gene for stem fasciation in spontaneous mutants. The two genes in dominant condition produced normal non‐fasciated stem. The fasciated and the non‐fasciated F2 plants did not differ significantly for number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant, grain yield per plant and seed size, suggesting that it is possible to exploit the fasciated trait in chickpea breeding without compromising on yield.  相似文献

Inheritance and genetic linkage analysis of a firm-ripening tomato mutant   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The tomato cv. ‘Santa Clara’ is widely cultivated among tomato producers in most of the South‐east of Brazil. Recently, some plants of this cultivar were identified with morphological alterations in both vegetative and reproductive organs. These plants showed firm (firme) ripe fruits, slow and delayed ripening. They also had yellow leaves associated with precocious senescence and flowers with pale stigmas. The objective of this work was to determine the genetic model of inheritance for this mutation and to evaluate its effects on shelf life and loss of firmness in mature fruits, as well as analyse the occurrence of genetic relationships between this putative mutant and other pleiotropic mutants. Mutated plants were crossed with the non‐mutant cv. ‘Santa Clara’ and some previously described pleiotropic mutants. Seeds of F1 and F2 generations and backcrosses were obtained for the segregation analysis. Morphological characteristics modified by this mutation are governed by a recessive gene with pleiotropic effects. In addition, the test of allelism showed a lack of genetic complementation between the ‘firme’ mutant and lutescent‐2 mapped on chromosome 10. Fruits of the ‘firme’ mutant had a slower rate of softening compared with the cv. ‘Santa Clara’ and its hybrids. The fruit shelf life of the mutant ‘firme’ was significantly superior to the other genotypes. No maternal effect was detected in either qualitative or quantitative characteristics. Based on the data, the mutation ‘firme’ in the cv. ‘Santa Clara’ is located in the region containing the l‐2 locus, which promoted alterations in ripening and post‐harvest physiology of fruits. The mutation ‘firme’ may represent a new allele of the gene lutescent‐2 or a gene linked to physiological events of fruit ripening.  相似文献

Summary Infection Type (IT) and Uredinial Number per Leaf Disk (ULD), induced on eleven cultivars of poplar in vitro, were employed to compare five radiation induced, mono-uredinial mutant lines of Melampsora medusae Thum. with the wild type race 5A from which they were derived. IT produced by the mutants was higher than (eight cultivars), similar to (two cultivars) and pronouncedly less than (IT from 4 to 1 in P. deltoides cv. 7–2) that of race 5A. Although the five mutants produced a uniform IT within a particular cultivar. ULD varied significantly between mutants on individual cultivars and there was a significant differential interaction of the mutant lines with cultivars. The ranking of mutant lines for aggressiveness on cultivars was not consistent while the differences among the mutants in mean ULD over all cultivars were not associated with the dosage level of irradiation from which they were isolated. The implications of the results in the interaction of leaf rust with poplar cultivars are discussed.  相似文献

Summary In comparisons made under typical summer conditions in the field at Davis, California, the foliage of the anthocyanin-deficient mutant af proved to be much more susceptible to attack by Epitrix hirtipennis (Melsheimer) than that of the isogenic normal line, normal cultivars, or any other tested mutant. Since a relatively uniform level of damage was observed in leaves of various ages that contacted the soil, the interaction is probably of a preference rather than antibiotic nature. A comparison with nine other anthocyaninless mutants proved that anthocyanin deficiency is not responsible for susceptibility. The severe reduction of glandular hairs and consequent lack of foliage aroma—hitherto unsuspected pleiotropic effects of af—probably account for the high susceptibility of this mutant. The evolutionary significance of the distinct foliage aromas characteristic of each tomato species is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Fruit acidity as such appears to be gouverned by a single major gene, low acidity being a recessive character. The additional genetic variation is explainable by the additive gene action model. This mode of inheritance causes the pH distribution of seedlings in progenies to shift with a higher mid-parent pH towards more low-acid cum sweet (pH 3.8) and fewer high-acid cum sour (pH 2.9) seedlings or vice versa with a lower midparent pH. As a result, in crosses between heterozygotes (Mama) the total proportion of undesirable seedlings -low plus high-acid ones-, remains similar, irrespective of the mid-parent pH. This proportion constituted about one third of the seedlings. A same proportion, but of mainly sour plants, was found in crosses between relatively acid homozygotes (Mama) or between these and similar heterozygotes. It was less than one quarter if the heterozygous partner was medium-acid and a few percentages only when both the homozygous and heterozygous partner were medium-acid. Choosing parents in the absence of information, chances are that the very large majority of the medium-acid types are heterozygotes, that among the relatively acid ones one in two is homozygous and that the odds to find homozygotes among the sour types are probably best. Attention was drawn to the importance of a high sugar content — which is quantitatively inherited — in parents with a relatively low pH to increase the chances of selecting seedlings with a good sugar/acid ratio.  相似文献

Summary Two kinds of wheat hybrids with the same nuclear genotype but different cytoplasms (one with T.timopheevi cytoplasm, i.e., A/R, and the other with T.aestivum cytoplasm, i.e., B/R) were produced by two 3 × 5 incomplete diallel crosses of 3 A-lines, 3 corresponding B-lines and 5 R-lines, respectively. Experimental results did not show significant differences between the hybrids of A/R and B/R in grain filling characteristics and grain weight. The beterosis of grain weight seems mainly determined by the nuclear genotype. Although the seeds set on most A-lines were shrivelled, such a phenomenon was not found in grains set on F1. The duration of the lag period (D1) and the average grain filling rates during the linear period and the mature period (i.e., FR2 and FR3) were significantly and positively related to 1000-grain weight. It was in these factors that most hybrids displayed clear mid-parent (MP) heterosis. The amount of grain weight heterosis was not significantly related to MP value. This indicates that the grain weight heterosis of wheat hybrids will not decrease with an increase of the MP value.  相似文献

Summary Previously identified segregant lines of oats with levels of adult plant resistance to powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis f.sp. avenae) better than the resistant parent maintained this high level of resistance in field nurseries over two growing seasons. This enhancement was not expressed on inoculated detached leaves under laboratory conditions where no differences between the more resistant parent cv. Maldwyn and the most resistant segregants was detected. Reduced resistance was not detected in tests where leaf segments of the transgressive lines were inoculated with trained isolates. Problems associated with selecting for adult plant resistance under both field and laboratory conditions are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Monosomic additions of Beta vulgaris x B. procumbens with resistance to beet cyst nematode (Heterodera schachtii Schm.) were used for the production of resistant diploids through incorporation of the B. procumbens chromosome fragment bearing the resistance gene(s) into one of the sugar beet chromosomes. The heterozygotes obtained accordingly were selfed for producing homozygotes. These homozygotes differed morphologically from commercial sugar beet varieties, but produced reasonable amounts of pollen. Female transmission of resistance was 100%, whereas male transmission, apart from some exceptions, was more than 90%. The number of hypersensitivity reactions to penetrated larvae was related to the degree of susceptibility. Larval development was severely retarded in the resistant plants, preventing most of them to produce cysts. If cysts were formed, their content was considerably less as compared to those in the susceptible plants.  相似文献

Summary Plot yields and both environmental correlations and variances of various morphological and yield characters were compared at different plant densities of lines and F1 hybrids in rapeseed over a two-year period. These variances and correlations were measured on single plant basis and are independent of the genotype: they may partly reflect physiological relations between characters. At intermediate or low density, results indicate no significant heterogeneity for behaviour of both homozygotes and heterozygotes, with some lower correlations at very low densities. At high density hybrid vigour is significantly higher than at low or intermediate density. In heterozygotes, it is associated with reinforced correlations between morphological and yield criteria. The results are discussed with regard to seed yield elaboration, to heterosis and possible homeostasis of hybrids.  相似文献

Summary Improved grain yields in lines of oats from matings of Avena sativa x A. sterilis were found to be due to increased plant growth rate. Growth rates of oats were quantitatively inherited, with the minimum number of effective factor pairs segregating in the interspecific matings ranging from 3 to 9. Heritability values for this trait averaged 0.4. Growth rate was highly and positively correlated with bundle weight, straw yield, grain yield, and unit straw weight, but it was uncorrelated with heading date and harvest index. Correlations with plant height were low. Thus, it should be possible for oat breeders to combine the high growth rates from A. sterilis with any combination of agronomic traits.Journal Paper No. J-8608 of the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station, Ames, Iowa 50011. Summary Although wild oats (Avena fatua L.) have been considered a potential source of genes for cultivated oat (Avena sativa L.) improvement, most progenies of A. sativa/A. fatua crosses have weak straw and are very susceptible to crown rust (Puccinia coronata CDA. var. avenae Fraser and Led.). Backcrossing to A. sativa has been suggested as a method of improving progeny lines while introducing new genes from wild oats to cultivated oats. In this study, A. sativa/A. fatua F1 hybrids were backcrossed twice to A. sativa, and lines from three backcross populations were selected on the basis of agronomic performance in segregating generations. The A. sativa recurrent parents were Dal (tall and late) and Stout (short and early).Backcross lines and recurrent parents were evaluated in five performance trails from 1983 through 1985. There was significant variation among backcross lines for most traits, but most backcross lines did not produce higher grain and straw yields than their A. sativa parent. Several backcross lines were higher than their recurrent parent in test weight and groat percentage. A line derived from Stout, 175BC2-6, was considered the most promising backcross line in the study. This line produced more grain, had heavier kernels, and headed 3.3 days earlier than Stout. Although 175BC2-6 does not have sufficient straw strength and crown rust resistance to be released as a cultivar, it is considered to be a new source of high grain yield, high test weight and earliness for oat breeding.  相似文献

Heterosis appearing in crosses between mutants derived from the same parent variety and crosses of mutants with parent varieties has been observed by many authors for many plant species including such important crops as barley, faba bean, maize, pea, pearl millet, rice, sunflower, sesame, sweet clover, triticale and wheat. Mutant heterosis was reported for crosses of spontaneous mutants, mutants obtained after treatment with various mutagens and recently also for somaclonal variants. The heterotic effects are usually related to an increase in some yield components. There is a lack of correlation between mutation of a particular plant character and appearance of heterotic effect. The yielding performance of a mutant was not correlated with its potential to give yield heterosis in crosses with another mutant, often also a very poor one, or with the parent variety. Poor yielding barley mutants from the collection of semi-dwarf forms of the Department of Genetics, Silesian University gave heterosis in crosses with other mutants or parent varieties for such characters as tillering, grain number and weight per plant. In addition to mutants with deleterious mutations of such characters as chlorophyll synthesis or fasciated stem there were also lines mutated for earliness, semi-dwarfness, low glucoside or high protein and lysine content which gave significant heterosis in crosses. One possible explanation of the phenomenon of mutant heterosis is related to the frequency of mutations induced by chemical and physical mutagens. The appearance and the level of heterotic effect of mutated genes will depend on their interaction with other mutated genes or with genes from the parental genotype. High specific combining ability of mutants giving heterotic effect makes hybrid seed production, based on crosses with defined sources of cytoplasmic or genetic male sterility, unfeasible or even impossible. Doubled haploids provide a unique system to attempt the ‘fixing’ of hybrid performance in homozygous lines and to avoid the step of hybrid seed production. The assumption on the ‘fixability’ of hybrid yield in homozygous lines based on reports that large additive genetic variance is responsible for yield heterosis in wheat or barley was proven also for mutant crosses. Competition and Productivity in Mixture of Oats and Wheat   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The research assesses the productivity of mixture of oats (Avena sativa) and wheat (Triticum aestivum), and compares two different approaches used in plant competition studies: replacement (substitutive) designs and additive designs. The experiment was carried out on sandy loam soil at the Experimental Station of Agricultural University of Wrocław (Poland). Oats and wheat were grown for grain as sole crops and in 1 : 1 replacement mixtures at three rates of seeding: 150, 300 and 600 viable seeds m−2. These designs allowed mixtures seeded at a rate of 300 and 600 seeds m−2 to be analysed according to either a replacement or an additive approach. In 1999, pure stand wheat and oats–wheat mixture yielded significantly more grain than oats grown alone but in 2000 there was no difference in yield. Wheat outcompeted oats in mixture but the relative competitive ability of the two species changed little with increasing seeding density. Relative yield total (RYT) for grain was significantly >1.0 (RYT = 1.07) in 1999 for the lowest seeding density, showing partial complementarity in use of limiting resources by the species in mixture. Based on grain yields, the results obtained from substitutive and additive mixtures were similar with respect to the relative yields and relative competitive ability of the two species concerned.  相似文献

Summary A study was undertaken to evaluate the breeding behaviour and to identify a spontaneously produced putative chromosomal deletion in the winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em. Thell.) cv Norstar. Male and female transmission studies of plants heterozygous for the deletion chromosome indicated 9.5% and 48.8% transmission through the pollen and the egg, respectively. Meiotic analyses of progeny from deletion heterozygotes indicated that the deletion chromosome was eliminated from half of the plants, which agreed with the male and female transmission frequencies. Testcrosses of the deletion chromosome with telocentrics and nullisomic-tetrasomic combinations suggested that the deletion involved the long arm of chromosome 5D. This was confirmed by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. Also, monosomic plants obtained in progeny of deletion heterozygotes were shown to be monosomic for 5D. Studies of plants homozygous for the deletion showed relatively normal pairing between the deletion chromosomes, and with the short arm (5DS), but not the long arm (5DL). Deletion homozygotes were self-sterile, and morphologically similar to plants nullisomic for 5D, but plants that also contained 5DL, or a homoeologous chromosome were self-fertile and had normal morphology. Studies of chromosome morphology indicated that the deletion chromosome was metacentric, and the length of the long arm was reduced by approximately 60%. RFLP studies showed that, in terms of genetic distance, 90% of the arm was missing.  相似文献

Summary In the first inbred generation (I1) of cv. Black 4495 a dark green, slowly growing mutant (coded ds) was found, whereas the I1 of its self-compatible dihaploid, B16, comprised this ds mutant and in addition the mutants virescens (v) and yellow margin (ym). The occurrence of ds and ym might trace back to diploid S. phureja, one of the ancestors of Black 4495. No lethal mutants were observed in I1 of B16. Analysis of I1 of cv. Gineke revealed a simplex condition for virescence and either duplex or triplex heterozygosity for one lethal gene. On the other hand, the I1 of its dihaploid, G254, segregated for virescence and for three different lethal genes. It is shown that both in B16 and in G254 homozygosity of an S-bearing translocation causes early death of embryo and endosperm, thus preventing seed development. From this study it appeared that the three lethal genes from G254 affect germination rate of the seeds. The genotypes at 11 loci of B16 and G254 are presented.Visiting scientists from Birmingham, England and Mlochow, Poland, respectively.  相似文献

Flecking trait in the mutant C591 (M8) Triticum aestivum L. is a stable, developmentally programmed, dominant mutation under monogenic control resembling pathogenic attack and starts appearing only from boot leaf stage of the plant. Mutant plants differ significantly from normal plants in terms of total chlorphyll contents only at later stages of symptom spread when the flecks fully cover the leaf sheath and leaves. However, total grain weight per main spike of mutant did not differ significantly from the normal plants. Microscopic studies of the mutant leaves did not reveal any damaging effect of the mutation on leaf anatomy per se, even though differences were observed in chlorophyll filling in mesophyll cells. Considering the peculiar characteristics of the mutation, many of which resembling the disease lesion mimic mutations in other crops, this is suspected to be such a mutation in wheat. Lack of variability in sorghum is the main reason for the stagnation in crop improvement including low heterosis. Studies on somaclonal mutations of sorghum have led to the development of a diverse axillary branched grain sorghum mutant, SbABM of postrainy season variety A‐1 (Annigeri‐1) which bears multiple panicles. Considering its developmental significance and phenotypic diversity, this mutant was subjected to detailed genetic analysis. To exploit its genetic potentiality, the mutant was involved in a full diallel study along with ruling varieties to assess the combining ability and to quantify the magnitude of heterosis. SbABM performed exceptionally well in hybrid combinations for all the traits. Mean squares due to genotypes were highly significant for all the traits. The results on general combining ability revealed that SbABM was significantly better general combiner for all the traits studied. Majority of the hybrids involving SbABM as parental line exhibited high degree of heterosis for most of the traits, finally contributing to overall plant's vigour. However, SbABM did not restore fertility on both milo and maldandi cytoplasm.  相似文献
