The effects of a trickle challenge with the equivalent of 10,000 infective Ostertagia ostertagi larvae per day on appetite, digestibility, rate of passage of digesta and liveweight gain were investigated in 12 calves assigned to infected, pair-fed control and ad libitum-fed control groups. Digestibility of cellulose, nitrogen, organic matter and dry matter was determined using insoluble acid detergent fibre as a marker on two occasions during the study: (i) Between days 31 and 38, when abomasal dysfunction was greatest; and (ii) between days 52 and 58, beginning approximately one week after anthelmintic treatment (day 46). Rate of passage of digesta was measured using chromium mordanted hay, fed to each calf after each digestibility study period. Voluntary feed intake of the infected group was significantly reduced from day 37 with the greatest depression (77 per cent) occurring just before anthelmintic treatment. The drop in appetite was responsible for nearly 73 per cent of the difference in liveweight gain between the infected and ad libitum fed control groups. The apparent digestibility coefficient of nitrogen was significantly depressed (22 per cent) in the infected group though was restored to control levels by anthelmintic treatment. The rate of passage of digesta was significantly reduced in both pair-fed control (50 per cent) and infected (74 per cent) groups. Anthelmintic treatment increased the latter though only to pair-fed control group levels. It is suggested that the marked hypergastrinaemia seen in the infected calves may have been in part responsible for the decreased rate of passage of digesta and in turn for the drop in appetite.  相似文献

Metabolic effects of a trickle challenge with the equivalent of 10,000 infective Ostertagia ostertagi larvae per day were investigated in 12 calves allocated to infected, pair-fed control or ad libitum-fed control groups. Changes in hormone levels reflecting abomasal, pituitary and pancreatic function were monitored using radioimmunoassay techniques previously validated for use in cattle. A range of metabolic profile parameters and blood metabolites was also measured. Feed intake of the infected calves began to decline as blood gastrin and pepsinogen levels reached a peak. The depression in appetite recorded in this group was responsible for significant increases in plasma urea and non-esterified fatty acid levels and associated with an increase in growth hormone/insulin ratio. No significant difference in glucagon levels was recorded between groups. A decline in blood albumin values was also shown in the infected group and associated with a drop in nitrogen digestibility. A significant depression in circulating calcium levels was related to either the hypoalbuminaemia or impaired mineral absorption in the intestine. A decrease in plasma cholesterol values in the infected group was associated with changes in digestive function.  相似文献

Observations of feed intake, digestibility, production and selected blood values were made during the winter housing period on 10 lactating dairy cows, naturally infected with gastrointestinal roundworms, which were either left untreated or dosed on two occasions with thiabendazole in-feed. While treatment had no significant effect on appetite or production, there was a 9.8 per cent improvement in cellulose digestibility (P less than 0.05). An increase in circulating cholesterol in treated cows was associated with the improved utilisation of cellulose. It is considered unlikely that thiabendazole's primary anthelmintic activity was responsible for this effect. Treated cattle also exhibited a significant improvement in thyroid function during the course of the study compared with control animals. This might account for the increase in milk production reported in several trials following anthelmintic treatment of dairy cows.  相似文献

Rates of passage of fluid and particulate digesta markers and apparent digestibility estimated by three methods were compared in yearling horses fed high (14 per cent) or low (8 per cent) crude protein diets with one of two levels of exercise (0 or 12 km trotting per day at 12 km/h). Mean retention times (MRT) of the fluid marker (51Cr-EDTA) were shorter than those of the particulate marker (ruthenium-phenanthroline). There were no significant effects of dietary protein level on passage of either marker or on apparent digestibility of dry matter. Exercise increased voluntary feed intake and apparent digestibility and reduced the MRT of the particulate marker but increased the MRT of the fluid marker. Estimates of apparent digestibility based on acid-insoluble ash were similar to those calculated from total faecal collection but those based on chromic oxide were significantly lower.  相似文献

Sub-clinical parasitism in spring-born single suckled beef calves was investigated from the middle of their first grazing season until weaning or housing later the same year. The study was conducted on four beef suckler herds in southern England over a 3-year period and involved a total of 334 spring-born beef suckler calves and their dams. The animals were grazed extensively on pastures naturally infected with nematode larvae. At the start of each period of observation, faecal samples were taken from calves and cows and subjected to routine worm egg counts; calves were re-sampled at the end of the grazing season. In July in each year and at each location the calves were ranked by initial weight within sex, paired according to rank and randomly allocated to either an untreated control group or a group in which the calves were each treated with an ivermectin sustained-release (SR) bolus. The calves in both trial groups, and their dams, were grazed together until weaning or housing. The calves were weighed at the initial allocation and at the end of the study. The adult cows were not treated with any anthelmintic during the study. The faecal nematode egg counts (FECs) conducted in July showed that the suckler cows were excreting worm eggs at low concentrations: range 0-100 eggs per gram (epg), with one individual count of 500epg, 88% of the cows sampled had counts of <50epg. Similarly, the counts from the calf samples were fairly low in July: range 0-250epg, 73% of the calves sampled had counts of <50epg. By the end of the grazing season, the faecal samples from the untreated control calves showed higher values: range 0-650epg, with only 58% having an epg of <50.The average rate of daily liveweight gain in the untreated heifer calves was 0.79kg per day, the corresponding figure for the heifer calves treated with the ivermectin SR bolus in mid-summer was 0.88kg per day; the difference of 90g per day was significantly different (P=0.0118). The average rate of daily liveweight gain in the untreated bull calves was 0.91kg per day, the corresponding figure for the bull calves treated with the ivermectin SR bolus in mid-summer was 1.01kg per day; the difference was significantly different (P=0.0169).  相似文献

To investigate the effect of feeding forage legumes containing condensed tannins (CT) on internal parasitism, red deer calves were fed either lucerne (Medicago sativa; 0.1 per cent CT), birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus; 1.9 per cent CT) or sulla (Hedysarum coronarium; 3.5 per cent CT) and trickle-infected with deer-origin gastrointestinal nematode and lungworm (Dictyocaulus sp.) larvae for 5 weeks, then slaughtered at 7 weeks. There was a significant negative linear relationship between dietary CT concentration and abomasal nematode burdens. No significant differences in faecal egg counts, lungworm burdens or voluntary feed intake were found. Deer fed sulla had higher liveweight gain, carcass weight and carcass dressing-out percentage, higher serum total protein and albumin concentration and lower serum gastrin concentration and faecal lungworm larval count, compared with lucerne-fed deer. Inclusion of sulla in diets for young red deer may reduce the impact of internal parasites and/or reduce the dependence on anthelmintic treatment.  相似文献

Calves were first infected with 5000 Taenia saginata eggs at six to 10 weeks old and treated with praziquantel 12 weeks later. Complete immunity against challenge lasted for at least 12 weeks following anthelmintic treatment. Six months after drug treatment over 90 per cent of the cysticerci had been completely absorbed but some were still detectable especially in the heart. An increase was observed in the ELISA values of sera from infected calves following treatment with praziquantel, but no such rise was detected in sera from resistant calves after challenge infection.  相似文献

The persistent anthelmintic effect of ivermectin as a topical treatment at 500 microg/kg was evaluated against induced infections of Ostertagia ostertagi, Trichostrongylus axei and Dictyocaulus vivparus in calves. The results showed a highly significant (P<0.001) anthelmintic activity for at least 14 days against O. ostertagi and T.axei (>99 per cent efficacies) and for at least 28 days (98 per cent efficacy) against D. viviparus.  相似文献

Friesian calves given a low level infection of the abomasal parasite Ostertagia ostertagi over a six week period displayed a mild diarrhoea with high faecal egg counts and elevated plasma pepsinogen values. At necropsy on day 23 abomasal lesions characteristic of ostertagiasis were widespread. At 42 and 84 days oedema and congestion were also prominent. Total worm burdens on days 23 and 42 were similar but a marked decrease had occurred by day 84. Feed digestibility and nitrogen economy were not markedly affected but radioisotopic measurements demonstrated an increase in albumin disappearance and catabolic rates, and plasma faecal clearance during the course of the infection. Prior administration of a morantel sustained release bolus to a group of similarly infected calves reduced the total worm burdens to less than 50 per cent of those recorded in the infected calves on days 23 and 42 and this fell to 3 per cent on day 84. Abomasal damage and the adverse pathophysiological changes associated with infection were prevented in this group.  相似文献

1. The effects of E. acervulina on energy and nitrogen metabolism were studied in respiration chambers on four groups of four broilers aged 16 d: group C was infected with 1.1 x 10(6) oocysts/bird on day 1 and fed ad libitum, while groups A, B and D were pair-fed to group C to day 16 of the experiment. On day 17, groups A and C were given 5.0 x 10(6) oocysts/bird and fed ad libitum, while group B was pair-fed to group A and group D was pair-fed to group C to the end of experiment on day 32. 2. Dietary ME as a proportion of gross energy (0.68) and N retention (42 g/100 g N intake) were reduced in the infected group C compared with pair-fed controls (0.75 and 49 g, respectively) for the period 1 to 16 d. Subsequent challenge of group C saw no effects on the two variables, but metabolisability (0.65) and N retention (33 g) were significantly reduced in group A when infected for the first time on day 17. 3. The daily heat production and food intake of group A infected for the first time with E. acervulina on day 17, and group B, their pair-fed controls, were reduced during days 20 to 25 but no such reductions were observed in group C, receiving a challenge dose of E. acervulina, and group D, non-infected pair-fed to group C. The efficiency of utilisation of ME for growth of groups C and D was 0.60 over the 17 to 32 d period. 4. Challenge of immune birds did not affect the apparent digestibility of total minerals, calcium and phosphorus.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationships between chewing behavior, digestibility, and digesta passage kinetics in steers fed oat hay at restricted and ad libitum intakes. Four Hereford steers, with an initial average BW of 136 kg, were used in an experiment conducted as a balanced 4 × 4 Latin square with 4 treatments (levels of intake) and 4 periods. Animals were fed lopsided oat hay (Avena strigosa Schreb.) at 4 levels of intake (as a percentage of BW): 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and ad libitum. Digestibility, chewing behavior, and digesta passage kinetic measurements were recorded during the experimental period. Chewing rates during eating and ruminating [(chews?min(-1))/g of DMI?kg(-1) of BW?d(-1)] decreased (P = 0.018 and P = 0.032, respectively) with increased DMI (g?kg(-1) of BW?d(-1)), whereas total chewing and total time spent on each chewing activity increased. Calculated total energy expended by the chewing activity was 4.2, 4.4, 5.2, and 5.3% of ME intake for DMI of 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5% of BW and ad libitum, respectively, indicating that adjustments in animal chewing behavior may be a mechanism of reducing energy expenditure when forages are fed at restricted intake. Hay digestibility decreased (P < 0.001) with increased DMI (r = -0.865). Digesta mean retention time (h) was strongly correlated with DMI (r = -0.868) and OM digestibility (r = 0.844). At reduced intake, hay digestibility was enhanced (P < 0.001) by extending digesta retention time and by increasing chewing efficiency, highlighting the relationship between chewing behavior and the digestive process. Fractional outflow rate of particulate matter from the reticulorumen (k(1)) was positively correlated with total chews, emphasizing that the decrease in particle size caused by chewing facilitates particle flow through the digestive tract. Increased hay intake also increased (P < 0.001) k(1), whereas passage rate of the liquid phase, transit time, and rumen fill were not affected (P > 0.05). The latter was correlated with rumen volume (r = 0.803). In conclusion, the results of this study indicate that animals fed at restricted intake increased chewing rate when eating and ruminating, which, along with a longer digesta retention time, contributed to enhance feed digestibility.  相似文献

A single, artificially-induced fly-strike with Lucilia sericata larvae was associated with a rapid (decline in food intake in sheep, with a consequent reduction in liveweight. Loss of weight ranged from 0.5 to 5.5 kg over four to six days and recovery to pre-infestation liveweight took three to 36 days. Pair-fed, uninfested partners of these sheep also showed a reduction in liveweight, whereas uninfested sheep in some experiments fed ad libitum showed either little change or a gain in liveweight over the same period. In general, maggot infested sheep took less time to regain weight than did their pair-fed partners although the weight lost as a proportion of initial weight was similar in both groups. Loss of appetite alone would appear to account for these events.  相似文献

Dietary guar gum and cellulose were studied as purified soluble and insoluble nonstarch polysaccharide (NSP) sources, respectively. A control diet containing 14% cornstarch was formulated. A 7% guar gum, a 7% cellulose, and a 7% guar gum + 7% cellulose diet were formulated by adding the NSP to the control diet at the expense of cornstarch (wt/wt), forming a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement. The objectives were to determine whether guar gum and cellulose altered 1) the passage rate of digesta through the small intestine and total tract; 2) the digestibility of energy and CP, characteristics of the digesta, and microbial populations in the ileum; 3) plasma glucose and ghrelin concentrations; and 4) short-term voluntary feed intake and growth performance of grower pigs. In Exp. 1, 12 pigs (27.0 +/- 1.5 kg of BW) were fitted with an ileal T-cannula and were used in a 2-period change-over design, providing 6 observations per diet. Each period included 18 d: a 12-d acclimation period followed by 2-d feces, 3-d digesta, and 1-d venous blood collection periods. In Exp. 1, guar gum and cellulose slowed the passage rate of digesta through the small intestine by 26 and 18%, respectively (P < 0.05). Guar gum increased total tract retention time of the digesta by 14% (P < 0.05). Guar gum and cellulose increased the viscosity of ileal digesta by 72 and 76%, respectively (P < 0.05). Cellulose reduced ileal energy and CP digestibility (P < 0.05), but guar gum only tended to decrease ileal energy digestibility (P < 0.10). Guar gum and cellulose reduced total tract energy and CP digestibility (P < 0.05). At 60 min after feeding, guar gum decreased plasma glucose by 10% (P < 0.10). Guar gum interacted with cellulose to reduce plasma ghrelin before and after feeding (P < 0.05). Guar gum and cellulose interacted to increase ileal bifidobacteria and enterobacteria (P < 0.05); however, guar gum, but not cellulose, increased ileal clostridia (P < 0.05). In Exp. 2, 20 individually housed grower pigs (5 pigs per diet) had free access to the 4 diets used in Exp. 1 for 14 d. Guar gum and cellulose decreased ADG and reduced ADFI on d 0 to 14 (P < 0.05). In summary, increasing purified NSP in the diet reduced the passage rate of digesta, energy and protein digestibility, and feed intake, but increased ileal bifidobacteria and enterobacteria populations. The effects of cellulose were similar to those of guar gum. In conclusion, monitoring of dietary NSP is a critical factor to achieve predictable digestible nutrient intake and intestinal bacterial populations.  相似文献

Two experiments were carried out to investigate the acquisition by goats of resistance to Haemonchus contortus. In Experiment 1, five Saanen wethers reared worm-free and averaging 5 1/2 months of age at the start of the experiment, were dosed with 200 H. contortus infective larvae three times per week for 10 weeks (approximately 23 infective larvae/kg mean initial liveweight/week) and then given anthelmintic treatment. Each goat and an equal number of worm-free controls were then challenged with 10,000 infective larvae. Post mortem worm counts were carried out 30 days later. In Experiment 2, eight worm-free Saanen wethers, 14 months old at the start of the experiment, were dosed with 825 infective larvae per week for 14 weeks (approximately 23 infective larvae/kg mean initial liveweight/week) except for one week when only 300 larvae were given and one week when no larvae were given. After anthelmintic treatment, each received, together with seven worm-free control animals, a challenge dose of 15,000 infective larvae. Post-mortem worm counts were carried out 28 days later. There were no significant differences in post-mortem worm counts between previously infected and uninfected groups in either experiment. In both experiments, serum pepsinogen values rose significantly as a result of infection but there was no significant (p>0.5) correlation between worm counts and pepsinogen values on the day of slaughter.  相似文献

To assess the influence of forage diets on particle size of digesta in the rumen, three ruminally fistulated steers were fed alfalfa, orchardgrass or switchgrass hays in a 3 x 3 Latin square design. Mean sieve size of ruminal digesta for alfalfa, orchardgrass and switchgrass diets was 671, 652 and 466 microns, respectively. A second experiment examined the influence of ruminal particle size on digesta passage, digestibility and intake. Four ruminally fistulated Angus-Hereford steers were given ad libitum access to different proportions of alfalfa and switchgrass in a 4 x 4 Latin square design. Either a 100% alfalfa, 50% alfalfa:50% switchgrass, 25% alfalfa:75% switchgrass or 100% switchgrass diet was offered once daily. Mean sieve sizes of the ruminal digesta of these diets responded cubically (P less than .01; 1,066, 946, 1,003 and 925 microns, respectively). Mean ruminal turnover times were 24.3, 24.8, 24.7 and 29.8 h, respectively. Dry matter intake increased linearly (P less than .10) as the proportion of legume in the diet increased; no influence of diet on DM digestibility was observed. Passage rate of dosed nylon particles 1, 3 and 5 mm in length was influenced (P less than .01) by size; however, no difference in the passage rates of the nylon particles due to diet was evident. Particle size of ruminal digesta did not respond in a linear manner to the proportion of legume in the diet. A smaller ruminal particle size was not associated with a faster turnover of digesta.  相似文献

Four donkeys and four ponies maintained in climate rooms, were provided with meadow hay or barley straw supplemented with minerals and vitamins ad libitum. Both diets were given to all animals for periods of 21 days. Measurements were made during the last seven days following single doses of two non-absorbable markers (Cr-fibre and Co-EDTA). After six weeks the donkeys repeated the trial, walking 14 km and ascending 260 m five days per week. At rest ponies ate more than donkeys, however the donkeys showed a higher digestibility of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM) and acid detergent fibre (ADF) than the ponies. Both species lost weight, ate less and had a lower digestibility of DM, OM and energy on the straw than on the hay ration. Fibre digestibility (neutral detergent fibre [NDF] and ADF) was higher on the straw than the hay diet. Gastrointestinal transit time was slower in the donkeys than in the ponies on both diets. Both species showed a higher mean retention time of digesta on straw than on hay. Exercise had no significant effect on food intake and liveweight changes in the donkeys. Although digestibility coefficients were higher in exercised animals, the effect was not significant. We conclude that, although it is generally considered that donkeys can thrive better on poor feeds than ponies, when the animals are allowed ad libitum access to hay and straw better intakes by ponies may compensate for any differences in digestibility seen in donkeys. Intake of barley straw by both species was not sufficient to meet maintenance requirements.  相似文献

Prophylactic (summer) and/or therapeutic (autumn) administrations of an intra-ruminal sustained-release bolus (MSRB) containing morantel tartrate were compared for the control of gastro-intestinal nematodes in grazing dairy calves over an 8-month period (December to August). The MSRB was designed to release morantel tartrate at 150 mg/day for 90 days.

Treated and untreated groups of calves grazed separate replicated pastures. Both groups of calves receiving the MSRB at the beginning of summer showed a significant mean liveweight advantage (17.7 kg and 20.7 kg for the summer and summer/autumn treated groups, respectively) at the end of the trial period, when compared with untreated calves. The liveweight advantage of calves receiving the MSRB in autumn only (6.5 kg) was not significantly different from that of the controls.

Both the summer and autumn administrations of the MSRB prevented the accumulation of Pre-Type II burdens of Ostertagia spp.

Retention rates of the MSRB were high and chemical analysis of faecal samples indicated a fairly constant release of the anthelmintic over the predicted 90-day period.

The results indicate that the MSRB is potentially useful for the control of gastro-intestinal nematodes, and particularly for the production of ’safe’ pasture. The MSRB could provide an effective alternative to integrated control based primarily on grazing management.  相似文献

Lambs infected with Ostertagia circumcincta larvae and uninfected controls were either doses with 5 g copper oxide wire particles (COWP) or remained undosed. The change in abomasal pH was monitored from duodenal digesta and that in liver copper concentration from initial liver biopsy samples and liver obtained at necropsy after 22 days. Infection increased the pH of digesta from 2.5 to 4.5. The change in liver copper content in sheep not treated with COWP was +6.1 mg (12.6 per cent) and -6.8 mg (13.8 per cent) in control and infected sheep, respectively. Significantly greater amounts of COWP were recovered from the abomasa of infected than from control animals (3.6 +/- 0.23 and 1.6 +/- 0.55 g, respectively) and hepatic uptake of copper from COWP was 0.7 and 1.8 per cent of the dose, respectively. There were significant relationships between the pH of duodenal contents and COWP retained, soluble copper concentration in duodenal digesta and hepatic uptake of copper. It was concluded that, through causing an increase in pH in abomasal and duodenal digesta, gastrointestinal nematodes interfere with copper metabolism.  相似文献

The effects of Fasciola gigantica infection on bodyweight gain, dry matter intake, digestibility of nutrients and feed conversion efficiency in buffalo calves were investigated. Nine male buffalo calves of the Murrah breed, aged 12 to 15 months with a mean (se) bodyweight of 166 (12.5) kg, were randomly assigned to groups of five (group 1) and four (group 2). The animals in group 1 were given 1000 viable, mature metacercariae of F gigantica orally, while the animals in group 2 served as uninfected controls. They were stall fed on diets containing a concentrate mixture and ad libitum wheat straw and were maintained by standard management practices for a period of 165 days after infection. The average daily liveweight gain of the infected animals was 110.6 g, compared with 439.4 g in the uninfected controls, and was associated with the appearance and establishment of immature flukes in hepatic bile ducts. The feed conversion efficiency declined significantly (P<0.01) from 41 days after infection and was lowest at the end of the experiment. F gigantica infection did not influence the digestibility of the nutrients. The impaired feed conversion efficiency was mainly due to a reduction in dry matter intake due to inappetence.  相似文献
