An experiment to determine the origin of populations of infective larvae of cattle nematode parasites on pasture during winter was conducted in south-west Western Australia. Six pasture plots were contaminated with worm eggs by grazing worm-infected cattle for periods of a month during summer and autumn. Each plot was contaminated at a different time from the rest. The levels of infective larvae were determined by counting the worm burdens of tracer calves which test-grazed the plots the following winter.Tracer calves which grazed the plots contaminated during summer acquired few worms, whereas those that grazed the plots contaminated during autumn acquired many worms. It was concluded that the hot, dry conditions prevailing during summer and early autumn prevented the development of eggs or survival of larvae in dung pats or free on pasture. In this environment, a programme of worm control which relied on administration of anthelmintic to grazing cattle to prevent autumn contamination of pasture would be most likely to succeed if the first treatment was given in early autumn.  相似文献

Faecal pats containing parasitic nematode eggs were deposited monthly on worm-free pasture, from mid-1975 to early in 1979, near Rockhampton in central Queensland. Pasture samples were collected monthly from beside these pats and the number of infective larvae on the samples was counted.

Cooperia spp. were the most numerous larvae on pasture all year round and Haemonchus placei were commonly present in low numbers. Small numbers of Oesophagostonum radiatum larvae were found, mostly during summer.

Dung beetle activity and rainfall influenced larval populations on pasture, but temperature did not. Beetles were not active in winter, and pats deposited in spring, summer and autumn when beetles were active yielded only 42, 44 and 26%, respectively, as many larvae per 1000 eggs deposited as winter pats. Pats in which beetle activity was minimal (feeding only), moderate and intense (complete destruction), yielded 43, 10 and 6%, respectively, as many larvae per 1000 eggs as intact pats.

Larval densities on pasture were highest after the first saturating rains during the spring-summer period and most of these larvae migrated from unattacked pats deposited in winter. Beetle numbers and activity increased with the summer rains and so few larvae were available to migrate onto pasture during late summer and autumn when the highest falls of rain were recorded. The regression of larval recovery on rainfall was positive and statistically significant when data collected soon after these very heavy rainfall periods were omitted from the analysis.

In 1977, drought-breaking rains increased the normal larval density on pasture 10-fold because larvae in pats deposited in the last 4 months of the drought migrated onto pasture immediately after the rains.

This work suggests that in summer rainfall areas where dung beetles are active, helminth control may be achieved by reducing the worm egg output from cattle during the winter.  相似文献

Nematode parasite infections of semi-domestic reindeer grazing in their natural habitat in northern Finland were monitored for approximately 2 years. This was achieved by monthly faecal egg counts of male and female calves and adult females from an experimental reindeer herd, in addition to estimating the acquisition of nematode infection from pasture using tracer reindeer calves. The most abundant parasite was Ostertagia gruehneri in the worm counts of tracer animals and in faecal egg counts of adult female reindeer. Capillaria sp. eggs were detected in calves and adults, but Nematodirinae eggs were only recovered from calves. Faecal egg counts showed variations between months for each nematode species, with male and female calves shedding similar numbers of eggs. During each year, calves shed more Capillaria sp. eggs than adult female reindeer, but similar numbers of O. gruehneri eggs. Egg counts of O. gruehneri were more abundant in late summer-autumn (July-September), whereas Capillaria sp. and the Nematodirinae dominated the winter months (November-February). The seasonal trends of adult worm burdens of O. gruehneri in the tracers paralleled the egg count patterns. Capillaria sp. was not detected in tracer worm counts. Tracer worm burdens showed that the proportion of inhibited larvae of O. gruehneri and Nematodirinae steadily increased from spring to early winter, followed by a decline and a commensurate increase in the number of adult parasites in the second summer. This investigation showed that parasite transmission occurs continuously throughout the year for nematode parasites of reindeer in northern Finland.  相似文献

The morantel sustained release bolus was administered at turnout to first-season grazing calves in order to assess its efficacy in the seasonal control of infection by nematode parasites in Ireland. The pastures grazed by control calves showed a marked increase in gastrointestinal trichostrongylid infective larvae by September, while numbers of infective larvae on pasture grazed by bolus-treated calves remained at a low level throughout the grazing season. In consequence, the controls showed significantly higher worm egg counts in late season and significantly higher worm burdens (mainly Ostertagia spp) at necropsy carried out in November on representative number of principal animals selected from each group. These reduced worm burdens were attributed to the suppression of egg output during the early part of the season as a result of treatment with the morantel sustained release bolus at turnout in the spring. Pasture contamination with Dictyocaulus viviparus larvae was present on all treatment pastures. The bolus-treated calves however were subjected to an increase in D. viviparus infection which occurred on their pasture in late season after the active life of the bolus had expired. It was concluded that bolus treatment delayed (rather than prevented) the buildup of D. viviparus infection on the pasture by 60-90 days.  相似文献

The susceptibility of Romanov and Lacaune sheep to nematode parasites was studied in a permanent flock grazing an extensive pasture. The output of strongyle eggs and protostrongyle larvae was higher in Romanov ewes. Faecal samples of the Romanov ewes more often harboured Nematodirus eggs while the larvae recovered from cultures of these samples contained a higher percentage of Teladorsagia. Romanov tracer lambs had a significantly heavier adult Teladorsagia burden. This higher natural susceptibility of the Romanov breed was confirmed by experimental infections with T. circumcincta and N. spathiger but not with Trichostrongylus colubriformis. In infections with Muellerius capillaris and Protostrongylus rufescens, the worm burdens were similar but parasite fertility (larvae per adult) seemed to be higher in Romanov tracer lambs.  相似文献

The effect of forward (F) and lateral (L) creep grazing, as two possible management alternatives of intensive production systems, on the gastro-intestinal nematode epidemiology of ewes and lambs was studied. Two groups of Romanov x Rasa Aragonesa ewes rearing twins and maintained on an autumn-contaminated pasture at a mean stocking density of 35 ewes ha-1, were used. Measurements were made of the population of infective larvae on the pasture, level of serum pepsinogen, worm eggs in faeces of ewes and lambs, and lambs' growth rate. In addition, post-mortem worm counts from 'indicator' lambs were used to establish the level of infection at each rotational grazing cycle. Two different waves of nematode infection were identified. In both treatments, the over-wintering larvae were responsible for the first outbreak of parasitism which was particularly important for lambs on Treatment F. The second wave of infection apparently came up with several overlapped L3 generations and had different effects on the animals of each group. While early pasture contamination was suffered by the lambs of Treatment F, lambs on Treatment L were not seriously affected until the end of the third grazing cycle (end of May). The different grazing behaviour of lambs in both treatments appeared to be related to the outbreak of parasitism in lambs. The general pattern of liveweight gains was similar for both groups of animals. However, during the first 90 days on pasture lamb growth rate under Treatment L (193 g day-1) was significantly higher than that under Treatment F (164 g day-1). The serum pepsinogen values, worm burdens and liveweight gains indicate that under intensive systems where lateral creep grazing is allowed for lambs, the level of parasite infection is maintained within acceptable limits for the first 90 days on pasture with lambs' growth rate close to their potential. However, the parasitic consequences of grazing under a forward creeping system indicate that anthelmintic drenchings should be used at lambing and at 3-week intervals thereafter during the first 42 days on pasture, after which the risk of contamination from the over-wintering population is over.  相似文献

A study was conducted to assess the breed resistance against nematode infections in Santa Ines, Ile de France and Suffolk male lambs over a 9-month period in S?o Paulo state, Brazil. Lambs were born during the winter (year 2000) and were weaned at 2 months of age. The animals were then housed and treated with anthelmintics to eliminate natural infections by gastrointestinal nematodes. In late October 2000, lambs were placed in a paddock, where they stayed until August of the following year. Fecal and blood samples were taken from each animal every 2 weeks. On the same day, a pasture sample was collected to determine the number of infective larvae on the herbage. To prevent deaths, individual treatment with anthelmintics was provided to lambs with fecal egg counts (FEC) higher than 4000 eggs per gram (EPG) or with a packed cell volume (PCV) lower than 21%. In August 2001, all animals were slaughtered and the worms present in samples of the gastrointestinal contents were identified and counted. Most of the Suffolk and Ile de France sheep received three to six anthelmintic treatments over a period of 7 months, while most of the Santa Ines were not treated. Reductions in PCV and plasma protein values associated with high FEC and worm burdens were recorded, particularly, in Suffolk and Ile de France lambs. Haemonchus contortus and Oesophagostomum columbianum burdens and number of nodular lesions caused in the large intestine by O. columbianum larvae were significantly lower in Santa Ines sheep. All three breeds showed similar Trichostrongylus colubriformis worm burdens. The relative resistance of Santa Ines young male sheep was superior to that of Suffolk and Ile de France sheep.  相似文献

Gastrointestinal nematode parasite burdens were monitored in a herd of field-grazed cattle from weaning to 2 years old to allow observations to be made on the dynamics of burdens of arrested Ostertagia spp. and Cooperia oncophora. Arrested Ostertagia spp. accumulated in the herd over their first autumn and winter to reach a peak in late winter/spring (August-October). From October until late January they declined at a rate comparable to that at which they had accumulated. Numbers continued to decline at a slower rate until the following autumn (May) when they began to increase again. Observations on the decline of worm burdens in a group of animals which had been moved from pasture to worm-free conditions in October indicated that intake of infective larvae over late spring/summer contributed little to the number of arrested Ostertagia spp. in the herd. No clinical Type II ostertagiosis was observed in the field-grazed animals over the time of decline of the arrested worm burden, nor was there an increase in the number of adult Ostertagia spp. present. However, two of the animals removed from pasture to worm-free conditions developed Type II ostertagiosis approximately a month after the move. Worm burdens of successive groups of "tracers" grazed with the herd every 2 months indicated that there was a small seasonal increase in the propensity of Ostertagia spp. for arrested development. However, estimated accumulation rates of arrested larvae calculated from tracer worm burdens, suggest that this seasonal increase in propensity was not adequate in itself to account for the accumulation rate observed in "resident" animals of the herd. No comparable accumulation of arrested C. oncophora took place in resident animals over the first autumn and winter of the trial despite the fact that tracer worm burdens over this period indicated a marked seasonal increase in the propensity for arrested development by this species.  相似文献

This study tested the hypothesis that milk has a direct effect on the establishment of infection with Teladorsagia circumcincta, and provides information on the effects of suckling on resilience to infection in young lambs. Of 46 six-week-old twin-born lambs, one from each twin was allowed to continue suckling (S-) and its twin-weaned (W-) while both were concurrently infected with an average of either 0 (-0; n=7/group), 250 (-250; n=8/group) or 1000 (-1000; n=8/group) third stage infective larvae (L3) of T. circumcincta per day, providing six treatment groups. All groups grazed minimally contaminated pasture, and after 42 days were slaughtered for necropsy. Low pasture larval contamination was confirmed in W0 and S0 lambs by faecal egg counts (FEC) of less than 30 eggs per gram (EPG) and burdens of less than 140 worms. There was no difference in FEC between weaned and suckled lambs. Within infection regime, total worm burdens were 55-60% greater in the weaned compared with their suckled counterparts (P=0.05), and represented 27 and 17%, respectively, net establishment of larvae. The greater worm burdens of both groups of weaned animals, which compared with their suckled counterparts, and of those infected with 1000 compared with 250 larvae per day, were associated with shorter female adults that had fewer eggs in utero, perhaps indicating intra-worm population regulation, but highlighting the limitation of FEC in assessing nematode burdens of such young lambs. There was no effect of infection on live weight gain of either weaned or suckled groups and the possibility was raised that, in such young lambs, immune unresponsiveness may be responsible. The major benefit of continued milk consumption appears to lie more in providing nutrients for enhanced growth rather than in improving resilience of the lambs to infection.  相似文献

Six groups of tracer lambs grazed from April to August on a pasture ungrazed since the previous November. A gradual decrease was observed in the worm burdens until July when a marked increase both in the number of worms and in egg counts was recorded. Haemonchus species were solely responsible for this sudden increase and it seems most likely that infection originated from larvae of the previous year rather than from overwintering eggs. Survival of Haemonchus species larvae in soil is suggested.  相似文献

Two experiments were done to evaluate the effectiveness of a slow-release, morantel tartrate, anthelmintic bolus for controlling parasitic gastroenteritis in replacement dairy heifers. In experiment 1, good control of nematode contamination of pasture was indicated by lower worm burdens in tracer calves that grazed with 15 heifers treated orally with a single bolus and by significantly decreased numbers of nematode eggs in the feces of the 15 treated heifers, as compared with numbers of eggs in the feces of 15 nontreated control calves. Significant differences in weight gain were not seen between treated and nontreated heifers, probably due to low amounts of larval exposure, the small number of heifers evaluated, and parasitic resistance in the heifers, which may have developed as a result of prestudy exposure to contaminated pasture. In experiment 2, done 1 year after the 1st experiment, using the same pastures that were used in experiment 1, young heifers were used. Many of the heifers were parasite naive at the beginning of the experiment (ie, nematode eggs were not found before the experiment). Treatment with the bolus was effective in controlling parasitic gastroenteritis in the heifers and in controlling nematode contamination of pasture. Compared with nontreated heifers, treated heifers had significantly higher cumulative weight gains, a significant decrease in plasma pepsinogen concentrations, and a significant decrease in worm egg excretion. The number of worms acquired by tracer calves that were grazed with treated heifers was significantly less than for tracer calves that were grazed with nontreated heifers.  相似文献

Residual ovine nematode pasture infections were assessed by grazing groups of ewes and their lambs on permanent sheep and cattle pastures and by the use of tracer lambs. Ostertagia spp., Cooperia oncophora, Nematodirus spp., Chabertia ovina and Trichuris spp. eggs and/or larvae survived on pastures overwinter. Second generation Ostertagia larvae were present in greatest numbers on pasture during the latter part of August and early September. The failure of a significant build-up of Cooperia oncophora was attributed to negligible worm egg output of this species in sheep. A build-up of Nematodirus spp. on pasture was not detected in this study.  相似文献

Four worm-free lambs were grazed from May to October 1972 on a paddock carrying a low residual infection of O. circumcincta larvae whilst another group grazed a similar paddock carrying a substantial residual larval infection. On the first paddock the lambs acquired low worm burdens of mature worms passing large numbers of eggs, but in spite of this, pasture larval infection remained low. On the second paddock the lambs acquired high worm burdens, a large proportion of which were immature. On this paddock a rise in pasture larval count was observed and this reached a peak in July and August. In spite of the differences in worm burden of the two groups there was no significant difference in weight gain. The mechanism by which the differences in worm burdens may have developed as well as their implications in worm control are discussed.  相似文献

The nematode egg output of two groups of ewes, a pregnant test group (2-3 years of age) mated between March and April and a non-pregnant control group (5-6 years of age) was followed. The worm burdens acquired by worm-free 'tracer' lambs were also followed on the same pasture from March 1988 to February 1989. There was a significant difference (P less than 0.05) in the magnitude of the egg output in the test group compared with the control group. In the test ewes, an initial rise in egg production occurred 2 weeks after lambing and was maintained for five consecutive months. Necropsy worm counts from the 'tracer' lambs revealed that pasture larval levels were directly related to the levels of rainfall. Adult nematodes (Trichostrongylus colubriformis, Trichostrongylus axei, Haemonchus contortus, Oesophagostomum venulosum and Trichuris ovis), and some Moniezia expansa were present in almost all the lambs throughout the year, with the exception of January and February 1989. The absence of immature larvae in these lambs indicates that arrested development is not a feature of the life cycle of these species in Southern Ghana. The occurrence of a periparturient rise of nematode eggs in West African Dwarf ewes, a year-round breeder, means that susceptible lambs could be open to infection throughout the year. Control should, therefore, be conducted by treating ewes after lambing and restricting the breeding season to particular periods of the year.  相似文献

A high level of host resistance to Trichostrongylus colubriformis was established in a group of Saanen goats infected weekly with 10,000 infective larvae for 10 weeks, treated with an anthelmintic and then challenged twice with 50,000 larvae, with a further anthelmintic treatment 28 days after the first challenge. A second group of goats exposed only to the two challenge infections developed worm burdens intermediate between, and significantly different from, the first group and a third control group given only the second challenge infection. Nematode fecundity (eggs per female) and male:female ratios were also significantly decreased in the first two groups. Faecal egg counts and worm counts were highly correlated and this relationship was dominated by the influence of the number of eggs/female nematode. The goats were approximately 9 months old at the start of the experiment.  相似文献

Yearling cattle in Louisiana were examined at monthly intervals for abomasal nematode burdens and histological lesions over a year. Tracer calves were grazed for 3 to 4 weeks and removed from pasture for 2 to 3 weeks, then slaughtered; a few animals were killed in extremis shortly after removal from pasture. Histological changes were correlated with worm burdens and characterized according to the type of Ostertagia ostertagi infection present. In cattle with acute Type I ostertagiasis, changes varied from eosinophil infiltration to glandular dilation and slight mucous cell hyperplasia with submucosal edema. During the summer months the cattle had worm burdens that were primarily early 4th stage larvae (EL4), with changes characterized by minimal glandular dilation and mucous cell metaplasia and moderate lymphoid cell proliferation and with intramucosal migration of EL4. In the autumn, the maturation of EL4 produced the Type II syndrome with severe glandular changes, prominent mucosal hyperplasia and marked lymphoid cell accumulation. With increased duration of the pre-Type II interval, there was greater development of the subepithelial lymphoid tissue and increased frequency of epithelial globule leukocytes. The lymphoproliferation which occurred during the prolonged pre-Type II interval appeared to be related to the increased severity and mortality seen with the Type II ostertagiasis syndrome.  相似文献

A study was made of the possibility of reducing lungworm infections in young grazing calves by rotational grazing for weekly periods on six paddocks. For this purpose three groups of four calves each were grazed on separate pastures in 1989, whereas a fourth group served as a permanently housed control group. Two groups of calves were infected experimentally with six doses of 10 larvae of Dictyocaulus viviparus during the first 3 weeks on pasture. In the third group, low natural infections with overwintered larvae occurred. One of the experimentally infected groups was rotationally grazed for weekly periods on six small plots while both other groups were set-stocked. Faecal larval counts and worm counts in tracer calves demonstrated lower lungworm infections in the rotationally grazed group than in both set-stocked groups. However, the numbers of worms found after challenge infection and subsequent necropsy were relatively high in the rotationally grazed group, indicating that development of immunity was less than in both other groups. Owing to the dry weather conditions in the summer of 1989, no serious clinical signs of husk developed in any of the three groups. These dry conditions, however, did not prevent the build-up of heavy pasture infectivity with gastrointestinal nematodes resulting in heavy worm burdens and serious clinical signs in tracer calves grazing for 4 days in August and September-October, respectively. This implies that rotational grazing did not have a clear effect on build-up of gastrointestinal nematode infections.  相似文献

This study determined the in vitro effects on the viability of internal parasites of grazing undrenched weaner deer on either chicory (Cichorium intybus) or perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne)/white clover (Trifolium repens) pasture. One experiment investigated the hatching and development of gastrointestinal nematode eggs and larvae, and the development and motility of L1 lungworm (Dictyocaulus eckerti) larvae, and a second experiment used larval migration inhibition assays to test the viability of L1 lungworm larvae extracted from the faeces of weaner deer grazed on either chicory or pasture when they were incubated with rumen and abomasal fluids from fistulated deer also grazing on chicory or pasture. The incubations were undertaken with and without added condensed tannins purified from chicory and with or without polyethylene glycol (PEG) to bind the tannins. Chicory had no effect on the hatching and development of gastrointestinal nematode eggs and larvae. Grazing chicory reduced the number of lungworm larvae developing to the L3 stage, and L1 lungworm larvae from the faeces of chicory-grazed deer were less viable in rumen and abomasal fluid than larvae from pasture-grazed animals. Abomasal fluid was significantly (P < 0.001) less inhibitory to the migration of L1 lungworms than rumen fluid. When the larvae were incubated in rumen and abomasal fluids from chicory-grazed deer, their passage through sieves was significantly (P < 0.001) reduced in comparison with when they were incubated in the fluids from pasture-grazed deer Adding condensed tannins to rumen fluid increased the inhibition of the migration of L1 lungworm larvae but PEG removed this inhibition; this effect was not observed with abomasal fluid.  相似文献

The direct and indirect anthelmintic efficacies of the morantel sustained-release bolus given to calves were assessed in a 154-day controlled field trial. A permanent calf pasture (divided into 2 lots) and naturally parasitized calves were used. The medicated calves were given the bolus at the time they were placed on the pastures. Control calves did not receive anthelmintic therapy. The effectiveness of the bolus to control parasitic gastroenteritis was determined by monitoring various parasitologic determinants. The treated calves had significantly (P less than 0.01) reduced numbers of fecal nematode eggs for every posttreatment sampling period when compared with the control calves. Tracer calves, used periodically during the study to indicate pasture larval infectivities, had equivalent worm burdens at the beginning of the trial (treated vs control pasture). Tracer calves, added later in the study to the lot with treated calves, harbored 83% to 94% fewer nematodes than did their counterparts in the lot with the controls. Plasma pepsinogen concentrations, reflective of abomasal worm burden size and/or activity, were significantly higher (P less than 0.01) in the control than in the treated calves from day 54 until trial termination. At trial termination, the treated calves weighed an average of 27.8 kg more and harbored 80.9% fewer nematodes than the control calves. The morantel sustained-release bolus is an anthelmintic delivery device that has therapeutic and prophylactic antinematode activities. To achieve its optimum performance, the bolus must be used so that the epizootiologic patterns of the predominate parasitic nematodes are effectively disrupted. Generally, internal nematode parasitisms in the calf flourish during the animal's first springtime grazing period.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The epidemiology of H. contortus was studied for 21 months in 80 set-stocked Merino ewes and their grazing in an endemic area in Kenya. Observations included faecal egg counts (weekly), worm burdens (monthly), haematological indices and clinical signs. The levels of infective larvae on the pasture were estimated using tracer sheep. The classical acute form of haemonchosis was seen with equal intensity in both ewes and lambs during periods of high rainfall and self-cure was confirmed as a flock phenomenon which occured simultaneously on one occasion in sheep of all ages. Not previously recognised were the uniformity of the faecal egg counts in both ewes and lambs over long periods when the worm burdens fluctuated greatly, the marked decrease in worm burdens without the occurence of classical self-cure during periods when the intake of infective larvae was low, and the inverse relationship between the individual worm-weight and the total worm population. It was also concluded that one of the most significant features of haemonchosis is not the acute syndrome so characteristically associated with the disease, but the fact that a moderate infection of a few hundred worms persisting over a period of several months will produce chronic anaemia and, ultimately, severe loss of bodily condition and deathes in ewes and lambs grazing on poor quality pasture.  相似文献
