Lesions were formed in the mouth of the horse by first- and second-stage Gasterophilus intestinalis larvae. The lesions resulted as larvae burrowed through the top millimeter of the tongue and then became embedded in the interdental gingiva. Appearance of the lesion was dependent on the degree of larval burrowing activity and healing that had taken place. Active tunneling production occurred at the posterior end of the lesion. Extensive change in configuration and color was apparent along the longer lesions with active larvae. Virtually all tissue in the path of the larvae was removed while forming a tunnel. Tissue destroyed included tops of the lamina propria mucosae evaginations and the deeper portions of the lamina epithelialis mucosae. Histopathologic findings showed that the tissue removed included the nerve and blood supply of the proprial evaginations. Hemorrhage and exocytosis into the tunnels included erythrocytes mixed with some macrophages, lymphocytes and scant numbers of eosinophils. Air shafts excavated in the tongue by larvae enabled bacteria to enter into the tunnels. Bacteria became adhered to larvae and initiated microabscesses. Microabscesses were composed of clotted erythrocytes, bacteria, disintegrating epithelial cells, and large numbers of neutrophils. Cells surrounding the tunnel exhibited pyknosis, epithelial hydropic degeneration and became separated from each other. Healing of tongue lesions occurred as epithelial cell growth below raised the tunnel upward and affected tissue desquamated. Interdental gingiva invaded by larvae were hyperemic and denuded of epithelia. Recession and ulceration of the gingiva produced periodontal pockets. Extensive invasion by larvae led to compound periodontal pockets. Larval mouth hooks were embedded in the submucosa of the pockets and tore at engorged capillaries. The cephalic portion of embedded larvae became surrounded by a cellular exudate containing erythrocytes and mononuclear cells. Attachment of second-stage larvae at the root of the tongue did not produce observable damage.  相似文献

The horse is considered an aberrant host for the nematode parasite Trichinella spiralis, and many aspects of the biology and epidemiology of Trichinella infection in the horse are poorly understood. It has been reported that experimentally-infected horses produce a transient serological response to infection and that muscle larvae are cleared more rapidly than in parasite-adapted hosts such as the pig and humans. However, limited numbers of animals have been studied, and both the longevity of larvae in horse musculature and the immune response to Trichinella larvae remain unclear. In this study, we infected 35 horses with 1000, 5000, or 10,000 T. spiralis muscle larvae and followed the course of infection for 1 year, assessing larval burdens in selected muscles, the condition and infectivity of recovered larvae, and the serological response of infected horses. The results demonstrated that T. spiralis establishes infection in horses in a dose dependent manner. Anti-Trichinella IgG antibodies peaked between weeks 6-10 post-inoculation. Viable, infective larvae persisted in horse musculature for the duration of the study (12 months), and exhibited no apparent reduction in muscle burdens over this period. Encapsulated larvae showed no obvious signs of degeneration in histological sections. Larval capsules were surrounded by infiltrates consisting of mature plasma cells and eosinophils. Macrophages were notably absent. Given the lack of a detectable serological response by 26 weeks p.i. and the persistence of infective muscle larvae for at least 1 year, parasite recovery methods are currently the only suitable detection assays for both meat inspection and epidemiological studies of Trichinella infection in the horse.

Parasitic granulomatous eosinophilic inflammation was observed in the central nervous system (CNS) of a 6-month-old Arabian colt from New York state. Inflammation was associated with eggs, larvae, and adult nematodes in the cerebellum. Nematodes had histological characteristics of the superfamily Metastrongyloidea. The presence of dorsal-spined larvae in the CNS was further indicative of infection with a nematode in the family Protostrongylidae. Infections were most compatible with Parelaphostrongylus tenuis but specific diagnosis was not possible. This is the first definitive report of a protostrongylid nematode infection in a horse.  相似文献

Larval counts were made on mice 2 days after oral inoculation with X-ray (0-320 Krad) or of gamma ray (0-6 Mrad) irradiated eggs containing second-stage Toxocara canis larvae. The majority of the larvae irradiated with 0-40 Krad were recovered from the liver and lungs, while most of the larvae irradiated with 80 or 160 Krad remained in the digestive tract, mainly in the stomach and the proximal half of the small intestine. Only a small number of the 320 Krad irradiated larvae was recovered from the mice. No significant difference was observed in the viability of irradiated larvae incubated in vitro up to 13 days after irradiation. However, a substantial percentage of the 160 and 320 Krad-irradiated larvae hatched during that period. Very few larvae were recovered from the digestive tract of mice inoculated with eggs irradiated with 0.5 Mrad, and only one and four larvae were recovered from the liver and lungs of a mouse. No visceral larval migration was observed in mice inoculated with 1 Mrad-irradiated eggs. The minimum lethal radiation dose for second-stage T. canis larvae in eggs is proposed to be 1 Mrad.  相似文献

Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi larvae were fed on the ears of rabbits. Seven days after larval infestation, unfed, newly moulted nymphae were manually removed to infest a splenectomized donkey showing a patent Babesia caballi infection. Engorged nymphae were collected from the donkey and the ensuing adult ticks were placed on a susceptible horse. The horse contracted a B. caballi infection showing a prepatent period of 19 days after tick infestation. A very low parasitaemia, (highest score 2), which was patent for only 10 days, was recorded. The lowest packed cell volume recorded was 16%.  相似文献

Many aspects of the biology and epidemiology of Trichinella infection in the horse are poorly understood, including survival of Trichinella spp in horse muscle. In this study, we have assessed the freeze tolerance of T. spiralis in horse meat stored at 5, -5, and -18 degrees C for 1 day to 24 weeks. Results demonstrate a steady reduction in the number of live ML recovered from the cold stored meat samples. On Day 1, recovery of live larvae had been reduced by 18.6%, 50.1%, and 37.2%, and by 4 weeks, recovery of larvae had been reduced by 65.4%, 66.5%, and 96.2% in samples stored at 5, -5, and -18 degrees C, respectively. Infectivity results (measured as reproductive capacity index (RCI)) from mice inoculated with larvae recovered from non-frozen meat samples at day 0 was 23.5. Following storage at -18 degrees C for one and two days, the RCIs were 2.09 and 0.99, respectively. Small numbers of infective larvae were still present in meat samples stored at -18 degrees C for 4 weeks. The RCI of ML recovered from meat samples stored at -5 degrees C was 14.99 and 6.36 at 2 weeks and 4 weeks respectively; the RCI of samples stored at 5 degrees C was 23.1 at 8 weeks, and fell rapidly thereafter (12 week RCI 1.33; 0 at 24 weeks). These data demonstrate that infective T. spiralis, a non-freeze tolerant species, can survive for at least 4 weeks in horse tissue frozen at -5 or -18 degrees C, and that the numbers of infective larvae decrease substantially by day 2 at -18 degrees C and by week 4 at -5 degrees C.  相似文献

Itraconazole, a third-generation azole, was evaluated for treatment of resistant nasal mycotic infections in horses. Two horses with Aspergillus spp nasal granulomas and 1 horse with Conidiobolus coronatus nasal infection were treated with itraconazole (3 mg/kg PO bid). One of the horses with nasal aspergillosis was also treated by surgical resection of the nasal septum. The treatment time for the horses ranged from 3 to 4.5 months. No adverse effects were noted in any of the horses during the treatment period. Peak and trough serum itraconazole concentrations were < 0.5 μg/mL in all 3 horses. Itraconazole (3 mg/kg PO bid) appears to be effective in the treatment of nasal Aspergillus spp infections in horses because the fungal infection was eliminated in both horses. One horse still had excessive nasal sounds during exercise and was retired from training, whereas the other horse returned to normal. The nasal C. coronatus infection appeared resistant to itraconazole treatment in the affected horse because the granulomas were still present after 4.5 months of treatment.  相似文献

The present report describes a case of cutaneous papillomatosis related to equine papillomavirus type 2 (EcPV2) with concomitant cutaneous habronemiasis. A 2-year-old female Pura Raza Española horse was referred for a dermatological evaluation because of the onset of cutaneous multifocal, nodular lesions on the face characterised by a warty and partially ulcerated overlying epidermis. Multiple biopsies were taken from these lesions, and cutaneous viral papillomas with a concomitant severe focal eosinophilic dermatitis with intralesional Habronematidae nematode larvae were diagnosed. Immunohistochemistry revealed papillomaviral capsid protein L1 in the epidermal proliferative lesion, confirming the presence of a productive infection. Rt-qPCR confirmed the presence of EcPV type 2. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report of EcPV2-related papillomas with concurrent habronemiasis.  相似文献

Summary

In a four‐year survey, the course of pasture infestation with infective larvae of Strongylidae and the pattern of development of the Strongylidae infection in the host were investigated. In this way it was hoped to obtain epidemiological data which might serve as a basis for the control of strongylidosis in the horse.  相似文献

A discovery in 2002 of a Trichinella spiralis-infected horse in Serbia offered an opportunity to conduct needed epidemiological studies on how horses, considered herbivores, acquire a meat-borne parasite. This enigma has persisted since the first human outbreaks from infected horse meat occurred in then 1970s. The trace back of the infected horse to a farm owner was carried out. Interviews and investigations on the farm led to the conclusion that the owner had fed the horse food waste in order to condition the horse prior to sale. Further investigations were then carried out to determine the frequency of such practices among horse owners. Based on interviews of horse producers at local horse markets, it was revealed that the feeding of animal products to horses was a common practice. Further, it was alleged that many horses, particularly those in poor nutritional condition would readily consume meat. A subsequent series of trials involving the experimental feeding of 219 horses demonstrated that 32% would consume meat patties. To confirm that horses would eat infected meat under normal farm conditions, three horses were offered infected ground pork balls containing 1100 larvae. All three became infected, and at necropsy at 32 weeks later, were still positive by indirect IFA testing, but not by ELISA using an excretory-secretory (ES) antigen. This result indicates that further study is needed on the nature of the antigen(s) used for potential serological monitoring and surveillance of horse trichinellosis, especially the importance of antigenic diversity. The experimentally-infected horses also had very low infection levels (larvae per gram of muscle) at 32 weeks of infection, and although the public health consequences are unknown, the question of whether current recommended inspection procedures based on pepsin digestion of selected muscle samples require sufficient quantities of muscle should be addressed. It is concluded that horses are more willing to consume meat than realized and that the intentional feeding of animal products and kitchen waste is a common occurrence among horse owners in Serbia (and elsewhere?). This is a high risk practice which demands closer scrutiny by veterinary and food safety authorities, including the implementation of rules and procedures to ensure that such feeds are rendered safe for horses, as is now required for feeding to swine.  相似文献

Habronemiasis is a parasitic disease of horses and other equids which is caused by the invasion of Draschia megastoma, Habronema majus, and H. muscae nematodes and is transmitted by house flies, face flies, and stable flies. The adult nematodes live in the horse's stomach, laying eggs, which pass out in the horse's feces. The carrier flies lay eggs in the horse's manure, which becomes infested with larvae while the flies feed in the manure. The nematode larvae molt while in the fly larvae and develop into infective L3 larvae by the time the adult flies emerge from their pupal stage. The infective larvae are then transmitted to the horse when flies feed on secretions or discharges from hosts' eyes, nostrils, mouths, wounds, and other openings. The L3 larvae are ingested by the horse and are then able to complete their lifecycle. The most common aberrant forms (conjunctival and cutaneous habronemiasis) are associated with the nematode larvae being deposited in these areas, not completing its life cycle, with resultant signs probably associated with local hypersensitivity. This article details the biology of nematode parasites, diagnosis and treatment of this condition, and methods of prevention and control of the transmitting flies.  相似文献

A fatal case of eosinophilic and granulomatous meningoencephalitis caused by the free-living panagrolaimid nematode Halicephalobus gingivalis is reported in a 10-year-old Welsh gelding in the United Kingdom. Clinical examination first revealed behavioural abnormalities which rapidly progressed to severe ataxia, reduced mentation status and cranial nerve signs. Despite symptomatic treatment no amelioration of neurological signs was achieved and the horse was subjected to euthanasia. A complete post mortem examination revealed eosinophilic and granulomatous meningoencephalitis mainly affecting the cerebellum and brain stem with intralesional adult nematodes, larvae and eggs. There was also eosinophilic meningitis of the cervical spinal cord. The intralesional nematodes were morphologically consistent with the panagrolaimid nematode H. gingivalis. Although infection by this facultative neurotropic parasite is extremely rare, it needs to be considered in the differential diagnosis of central nervous signs in horses and, in particular, other equine helminthic infection of the central nervous system. This fatal case is unusual since lesions were locally very extensive and the nematodes did not colonise haematogenously to other organs as seen often in equine halicephalobosis. As the taxonomy of H. gingivalis has changed and some recent reports in the literature still refer to this species as Micronema deletrix or Halicephalobus deletrix, we here provide a short update of the species and some insights on the order Tylenchida, which contains free-living nematodes with parasitic tendencies.  相似文献

In order to assess the relevance of horses as a possible reservoir of Salmonella and Shigatoxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), 400 samples of horse faeces and 100 samples of horse meat products were examined by PCR-screening methods. Salmonella enterica was not found in any of the samples. One faeces-sample and one horse meat product were proved to be STEC positive. The STEC-strain from faecal origin belonged to the serotype 0113:H21 and had the stx 2c gene and the enterohemolysin gene. The STEC-strain isolated from a horse meat product had the serotype O87:H16 and the stx 2d gene. The results indicate a very low risk for human to get a Salmonella- or EHEC- infection from horses in Germany.  相似文献

Florida Native lambs, less than 6 months of age, were successfully vaccinated against Haemonchus contortus with a high mol. wt fraction (greater than 30,000 daltons) derived from a somatic extract of H. contortus larvae (SEL) and excretions and secretions (ES) of larvae isolated during in vitro development from the infective 3rd to 4th stage. A 59% reduction in adult worm numbers was obtained in vaccinates compared to naive lambs following challenge. The protection in vaccinated lambs was similar to that seen in lambs exposed to a primary infection of H. contortus larvae which had been cleared with anthelmintic prior to the challenge infection. The unfractionated SEL/ES preparation and a low mol. wt fraction gave no significant protection against challenge infection.  相似文献

In South Bohemia a case was discovered of a yearling colt attacked by the larva of the IIIrd instar of the deer warble fly Hypoderma diana Brauer. The dead, almost mature larva of the fly was squeezed out of a subcutaneous lump above the shoulder in the first decade of April, 1985. The case is evaluated from the point of view of the possibility of the transition of specific parasites--warble flies--to another host. The attacking of a non-specific kind can occasionally occur only when there is a large number of the parasites and both kinds of host. At present the degree of attacking of deer by subcutaneous warble flies is high and therefore under favourable circumstances even domestic animals can be attacked by this type of warble fly. The above case is the first to be ascertained of a horse being attacked by a deer warble fly.  相似文献

An intradermal test was developed to screen cattle for infection with the first-instar larvae of the warble flies Hypoderma lineatum and H. bovis. The diagnostic antigen, prepared from the first-instar larvae of H. lineatum, produced a distinct dermal reaction in cattle infected with the first-instar larvae of either species, but not in cattle in which the infection could not be confirmed later either on necropsy or by the appearance of warbles in the back. The reaction to the antigen was unpredictable in cattle with warbles in their backs. The diagnostic property of the antigen was also demonstrated in rabbits and guinea pigs artificially sensitized to the antigen.  相似文献

Infections with Micronema deletrix are described sporadically in humans and horses. This case report describes the infection with Micronema deletrix in a horse. The animal was sent to the clinic because of recurrent colic. On rectal palpation a mass was detected in the area of the right kidney and the horse was destroyed on its owners request. At slaughter a greatly enlarged right kidney interspersed with numerous white nodules was found. Histological examination revealed a granulomatous nephritis with numerous sections of nematodes. Based on their morphology and size, they were identified as Micronema.  相似文献
