Variation in seed dormancy and light sensitivity was studied in Alopecurus myosuroides and Apera spica-venti . Seeds were collected from different populations, at different dates and from plants emerging in autumn or spring, and used in four experiments. In the first experiment, initial dormancy was investigated in light and darkness. In Expt 2, buried seeds were exhumed on 16 occasions, from September 1997 to March 2000, and germinated in light, in darkness and after a 5-s light exposure. In Expt 3, emergence was recorded for seeds sown in pots outdoors. In Expt 4, stratified seeds of A. myosuroides only were exposed to photon irradiance ranging from 0.1 to 25 600 μmol m−2. Variation was high among seed collections, but both species showed winter annual dormancy patterns. Apera spica-venti germinated to high percentages in autumn but negligibly in spring. Alopecurus myosuroides germinated less in spring when tested in darkness and after a short light exposure and emerged poorly in spring, which reflected photo-desensitisation during cold stratification. We conclude that the peak of emergence in A. myosuroides , and to some extent in A. spica-venti , is largely regulated by exposure to light interacting with low-level dormancy. This offers valuable information regarding optimal timing of weed control measures.  相似文献

The effects of the density and proportion of both volunteer barley ( Hordeum vulgare L.) and Stellaria media (L.) Vill. (common chickweed) on the seed yield of both species was investigated in linseed ( Linum usitatissimum L.) and autumn-sown field bean ( Vicia faba L.). A model was created to estimate these effects. It was a combination of two models. The first was a simple linear model relating weed seed number m2 to weed dry weight m2. The second was an inverse linear model relating weed dry weight per plant to weed density. A very good relationship existed between barley dry weight and number of seeds m2 and between S. media dry weight and number of seed capsules m2. This relationship was relatively consistent between experiments. The inverse linear model provided a good estimation of the relationship between weed density and weed dry weight per plant for both barley and S. media . Model variables, however, differed between experiments. Using the combined model it was estimated that, in the absence of other weed species and at a density of 800 plants m2, S. media would produce between 4000 and 48 000 seeds m2, whereas volunteer barley, at a density of 400 plants m2, would produce between 2000 and 8000 seeds m2. The presence of barley always reduced S. media seed yield and a barley population of 100 plants m2 could reduce S. media seed yield by up to 79%. The presence of S. media reduced barley seed yield in only one of three experiments, in which a S. media density of 800 plants m2 reduced barley seed yield by up to 68%. A reliable seedling bioassay was developed and tested for the rapid screening for resistance to aryloxyphenoxypropionic (APP) herbicides in Alopecurus myosuroides and Lolium spp. populations. It is based upon the difference in coleoptile length of resistant and susceptible A. myosuroides and Lolium seedlings, respectively, exposed to fenoxaprop-P acid and diclofop acid solution for 6 days in a plastic box. A 6 mg L−1 fenoxaprop-P acid solution was selected as the best concentration for a reliable screening of resistant biotypes within A. myosuroides populations. At this concentration, coleoptile lengths of susceptible and resistant seedlings were shorter and longer than 10 mm respectively. Similarly, resistant seedlings within Lolium populations were easily detected at 10 mg L−1 diclofop acid. At this concentration, coleoptile lengths of susceptible and resistant seedlings were shorter and longer than 20 mm respectively. For both populations, the coleoptile length distributions appear to discriminate between two kinds of APP-resistant biotypes (highly and slightly resistant).  相似文献

The effect of wind on the dispersal of oospores of Peronosclerospora sorghi , cause of sorghum downy mildew (SDM) is described. The oospores are produced within the leaves of aging, systemically infected sorghum plants. These leaves typically undergo shredding, releasing oospores into the air. Oospores are produced in large numbers (6.1 × 103 cm−2 of systemically infected leaf) and an estimate of the settling velocity of single oospores (0.0437 m s−1) of P. sorghi indicated their suitability for wind dispersal. In wind tunnel studies wind speeds as low as 2 m s−1 dispersed up to 665 oospores per m3 air from a group of leaves previously exposed to wind and displaying symptoms of leaf shredding. The number of oospores dispersed increased exponentially with increasing wind speed. At 6 m s−1, up to 12 890 oospores per m3 air were dispersed. Gusts increased oospore dispersal. A constant wind speed of 3 m s−1 dispersed a mean of 416 oospores per m3. When gusts were applied the mean was 15 592 oospores per m3. In field experiments in Zimbabwe, oospores were sampled downwind from infected plants in the field and at a height of 3.8 m above ground level immediately downwind of an infected crop. These data indicate that wind could play a major role in the dispersal of oospores from infected plants in areas where SDM infects sorghum, perhaps dispersing oospores over long distances.  相似文献

Summary Density:yield loss models rely on fixed coefficients, parameterized from a particular site and season to predict the impact of weeds on crop yields. However, the empiricism of this approach and failure to incorporate environmental effects, has major biological and economic implications. In this study, seasonal variability in wheat yield loss and associated economic costs from Avena spp. were quantitated. A competition experiment at Wagga Wagga, NSW, showed large seasonal differences in wheat yield loss from densities of Avena spp. across 2 years. Gross margins, simulated over a 51-year period, decreased as Avena spp. density increased and were more variable at low crop densities and higher weed densities. For example, at a density of 200 Avena spp. plants m−2, coefficient of variation in crop gross margin ( CV ) was $AUS 47 ha−1 for a crop density of 200 wheat plants m−2 compared with a CV of $AUS 75 ha−1 for a crop density of 50 wheat plants m−2. The value of yield loss predictions will be vastly improved by making parameter values in yield loss models a function of seasonal factors such as rainfall.  相似文献

A simple life-cycle-based demography model was adapted for two contrasting weed species ( Alopecurus myosuroides and Poa annua ). This model included a seed production function that accounted for population self-regulation through weed:weed interactions. The A. myosuroides version of the model was tested with field data. Long-term simulations of population demography were then performed to investigate the relationship between weed control strategies based on density thresholds and both the frequency of herbicide use and the long-term economic profitability. This study confirms that threshold-based weed management strategies are more cost-effective than spraying every year and may allow important reductions in herbicide use. However, after the first transient years of either systematically spraying or withholding herbicide, the long-term spraying frequency was insensitive to threshold values between 0.01 and 100 plants m−2. The highest long-term profitability was obtained for the lowest threshold tested, and the profitability decreased rapidly when the threshold was raised above 4–6 and 10–20 plants m−2 for A. myosuroides and P. annua respectively. The study thus indicates that the exact threshold value is of little importance for the long-term reliance of the system on herbicide, provided that it is reasonably low. For species with low competitive ability, high thresholds may be used in some cropping systems to reduce the spraying frequency for environmental considerations, but those options would also reduce the profitability if no compensatory measures were taken.  相似文献

Predicting the growth and competitive effects of annual weeds in wheat   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The growth and competitiveness of 12 annual weed species were studied in crops of winter wheat, in which weeds were sown to give a wide range of plant densities. Weed growth patterns were identified; early species which senesced in mid-summer were less competitive than those with a growth pattern similar to that of the crop. Most species had little effect on crop yield in 1987, and this was attributed to a high crop den sity. Crop yield-weed density relationships for all species in 1988 and for Galium aparine in 1987 were well described by a rectangular hyperbola. Species were listed in the following competitive order based on the percentage yield loss per weed m?2: Avena fatua > Matricaria perforata > Galium aparine > Myosotis arvenis > Poa trivialis > Alopecurus myosuroides > Stellaria media > Papaver rhoeas > Lamiumpur-pureum > Veronica persica > Veronica hederi-folia > Viola arvensis. Prediction of yield loss is discussed. The assumptions inherent in using Crop Equivalents (based on relative weights of weed and crop plants), are challenged; with intense competition, weed biomass at harvest failed to replace lost crop biomass, and harvest index was reduced. It is concluded that a competi tive index, derived from yield density relation ships, and expressed as the percentage yield loss per weed m?2, is more likely to reflect the com petitive ability of a species than an index obtained from plant weights in the growing crop.  相似文献

In an attempt to standardize methods of assessment of Eurygaster spp. and Aelia spp., some methods published in USSR, Romania and Turkey are reviewed and details given. These are: 1) counting overwintering adults in quadrats or along a line; 2) counting old adults in quadrats or by sweep net after migration; 3) counting nymphs in quadrats. Methods of assessing crop loss caused are: 1) counting attacked stems of young wheat; 2) counting attacked ears; 3) identification and counting of attacked grain at harvest; 4) caging different numbers of nymphs and adults, and taking yields, grain weight, germination etc.; 5) assessing the effect on baking quality of flour etc. The effects of different numbers of insects per m2 on yield are given. It is suggested that standardization of such methods would lead to improved cooperative studies between different countries.  相似文献

Field experiments were conducted from 1994 to 1997 at two locations to study the effectiveness of chlorsulfuron and triasulfuron applied through different irrigation methods (chemigation) for control of Orobanche aegyptiaca Pers. in tomato ( Lycopersicon esculentum Mill). Three split applications of chlorsulfuron at 2.5 g a.i. ha−1 and of triasulfuron at 7.5 g a.i. ha−1, through conventional sprinkler irrigation systems, 10–14 days apart followed immediately by sprinkling with water, controlled O. aegyptiaca by about 90% and 80% and increased crop yield 25–47% and 30%, respectively, without any crop injury symptoms. Repeated applications of the same herbicides at half rates resulted in slightly higher O. aegyptiaca control and crop yield than only one herbicide application at double rate. Chemigation by the sprinkler systems (microsprinklers, 60 m3 ha−1) slightly increased the herbicide efficiency as compared with the high volume spray (800 m3 ha−1). O. aegyptiaca control from sulfonylureas applied by drip chemigation was poor, as this probably requires very accurate timing and the herbicide distribution in the soil was not uniform.  相似文献

Genome fingerprinting by simple sequence repeat (SSR)-anchored polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to analyse diversity in four weed species ( Alopecurus myosuroides Huds., Medicago lupulina L., Stellaria media (L.) Vill. and Aphanes arvensis L.) growing in the Broadbalk long-term wheat experiment. The experiment is made up of individual plots, to which different fertilizer regimes have been applied annually for more than 150 years. Sixteen polymorphic loci were analysed in the obligate outcrosser A. myosuroides (24 plants sampled on each of four plots); the proportion of total diversity caused by differences between populations (Gst) was low (0.02). Twelve loci were analysed in the self-pollinating species M. lupulina (24 plants sampled on each of four plots, Gst=0.12) and S. media (24 plants sampled on each of three plots, Gst=0.11); and 11 loci in the apomict A. arvensis (24 plants sampled on each of four plots, Gst=0.19). There was no relationship between the geographic distances separating plots and the genetic distances between samples from the weed populations growing on each plot. Soil fertility had an effect on molecular diversity in S. media : plants growing on low-nitrogen showed divergence from those sampled on high-nitrogen plots, which contained slightly more diversity.  相似文献

Single and combined effects of smoke pollution and the root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita race 1, were studied on eggplant in 1988 and 1989 at two sites (K1 and K2) 1 and 2 km respectively away from a coal-fired thermal power plant, and a control site at the Department of Botany, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). Mean concentrations of SO2, NO2 and suspended particulate matter (SPM) were respectively 172, 95 and 626 μg/m3 in 1988 and 144, 97 and 556 μg/m3 in 1989 at K1; and 258, 150 and 344 μg/m3 in 1988 and 226, 113 and 293 μg/m3 in 1989 at K2. Peak levels of the gases and SPM were recorded in the early (12.00–15.00) and late (15.00–18.00) afternoon respectively. Concentrations of the pollutants at a control site were very low. Marginal browning appeared on the leaves of eggplants grown at site K2 whether or not they were infected by the nematodes. The galling caused by nematodes was severe at both polluted sites but egg mass production was inhibited at K2. Egg laying was significantly reduced at both polluted sites. M. incognita significantly reduced plant growth, yield and leaf pigment production of eggplant at the control and polluted sites. Most non-infected plants also showed significant reductions in these plant varieties i.e. from the effects of pollution at K2. Foliar concentrations of sulphur were significantly increased at both polluted sites, being greater in infected plants. The interaction of smoke pollution and M. incognita infection led to greater suppressions at the polluted sites, which were mostly significant at K1. At the polluted sites, leaves had more and longer trichomes; also the number and size of stomata were decreased but their openings were wider especially in infected plants at the two polluted sites.  相似文献

Summary The effectiveness of crop competition for better weed control and reducing herbicide rates was determined for Avena ludoviciana and Phalaris paradoxa . Four experiments, previously broadcast with seeds of the two weeds in separate plots, were sown with three wheat densities, and emerged weeds were treated with four herbicide doses (0–100% of recommended rate). The measured crop and weed traits were first analysed across experiments for treatment effects. Grain yield and weed seed production data were then analysed using cubic smoothing splines to model the response surfaces. Although herbicide rate for both weeds and crop density for P. paradoxa had significant linear effects on yield, there was a significant non-linearity of the response surface. Similarly, herbicide rate and crop density had significant linear effects on weed seed production, and there was significant non-linearity of the response surface that differed for the weed species. Maximum crop yield and reduction in seed production of P. paradoxa was achieved with approximately 80 wheat plants m−2 and weeds treated with 100% herbicide rate. For A. ludoviciana , this was 130 wheat plants m−2 applied with 75% herbicide rate. Alternatively, these benefits were achieved by increasing crop density to 150 plants m−2 applied with 50% herbicide rate. At high crop density, application of the 100% herbicide rate tended to reduce yield, particularly with the A. ludoviciana herbicide, and this impacted adversely on the suppression of weed seed production. Thus, more competitive wheat crops have the potential for improving weed control and reducing herbicide rates.  相似文献

Exposure of harvested grapefruit to ultraviolet (UV) light induced resistance against the green mould decay caused by Penicillium digitatum. Grapefruit picked at various times during the harvest season responded differently to UV treatments. The UV dose required for development of maximum resistance increased as the season progressed. The initial UV dose required in November-picked fruit for maximum response was 4·8 kJ/m2. It declined to 1·6 and 3·2 kJ/m2 in December- and January-picked fruit, respectively, and increased to 8 kJ/m2 in February-picked fruit. Correspondingly, the minimum percentage infection developing after UV treatment increased throughout the season from 0 to 35%. Resistance in UV-treated fruit developed to its maximum extent at 24–48 h following exposure to UV light and then decreased. Development of induced resistance in grapefruit peel was affected by the temperature at which the fruit was stored 24 h after UV treatment and before infection with P. digitatum. In the UV-treated fruit, the fungus developed a sporadic mycelium with marked inhibition of sporulation. The activity of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase and peroxidase markedly increased in the peel following exposure of the fruit to UV light.  相似文献

The infection process of Septoria nodorum was studied on the flag and second leaves of wheat plants at the flag-leaf emergence growth stage (GS 39), after pre-inoculative fumigation with different doses of ozone (0, 80, 180 or 240 μg/m3) for 7 h daily over 7 days. On ozone-treated plants, formation of appressoria occurred earlier, leading to a greater number and density of appressoria and faster growth of superficial infection hyphae than on plants grown without ozone amendment. Additionally, on leaves treated with 180 and 240 μg/m3 ozone, the percentage of papillae per appressorium was only half that on control plants. The number of germ tubes per conidium was not significantly affected by any treatment. Effects of increasing leaf age on the infection process were similar to those obtained with ozone. These results provide further evidence for similarities in the physiological effects of ozone and leaf ageing, which support the hypothesis that disease alterations due to ozone are strongly determined by the senescing effects of the pollutant.  相似文献

Colorado beetle is not indigenous to the United Kingdom, but is often found in imported produce and is a serious pest of potato crops. The efficacy at 10°C of five fumigants was tested against diapausing beetles in the laboratory. Phosphine was the most effective giving 100 % kill in tests with a concentration time product of 6.7 g.h/m3; 100 % kill was also achieved in tests with: methyl bromide at 166 g.h/m3; carbon tetrachloride at 4000 g.h/m3; ethylene dichloride at 6240 g.h/m3; and 1,1,1-trichloroethane at 11600 g.h/m3. The mutual effects of redroot pigweed ( Amaranthus retroflexus ) on corn ( Zea mays ) were evaluated in an experiment conducted in 2005 at the Iranian Plant Protection Research Institute at Qazvin, considering the different densities of redroot pigweed against four different corn densities. Redroot pigweed, at 0, 35, 50, 65, and 80 plants m−1 row−1, was arranged factorially with corn at four, five, six, and seven plants m−1 row−1 in a randomized complete block design. Crop–weed competition resulted in a reduction in the total dry matter, Leaf Area Index, and crop growth rate of corn. Furthermore, an increasing weed density ≤65 plants m−1 row−1 reduced the corn grain yield and biological yield. Overall, six corn plants m−1 row−1 was suggested as the optimum density of this crop in competition with redroot pigweed.  相似文献

Summary. Plants of Chenopodium album L. were grown at a range of different densities in each of three years. The stem diameter, the number of main branches and the size and number of leaves decreased with increasing density as did weight and leaf area per plant. The dry-matter yield per unit area increased with density up to 576 plants/m2 in two of the three trial years. The proportion of the seed yield relative to the total yield was higher in the leas dense than in the dense stands, or was almost constant. Density did not affect the seed yield per unit area, but seed yield per plant fell as density increased. Maximum seed production was 41 900 per plant and the mean seed yield over the three years was 8300 seeds per plant. The percentages of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and calcium were highest when the plants were at an early stage of development. The proportions of these elements in the dry-matter yield decreased with increasing age of the plants. The density of the stand did not affect the percentages of elements but the total amounts per plot were greatest at the flowering stage and in the denser stands.  相似文献

Triadimenol residues in sandy and clay soils, following applications of up to 1 g/m2 in previous seasons to tobacco seedlings 2 days before they were transplanted, had little effect on seedling emergence and growth. Residues were beneficial to transplants; they improved growth and controlled stem and root infection caused by Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium solani. During the first 4 weeks after transplanting, stem infection was negatively correlated with loge of the pre-sowing rate of triadimenol and with loge of the soil concentration in seedbeds at pulling. Plant growth increased linearly according to the equation l/Y=a+b/(x-c), where Y = plant dry mass (g/plant), .x = triadimenol pre-sowing (mg/m2) and c= - 1 1, determined iteratively, r2 = 0-94; P < 0.001. Triadimenol applications to bare soil increased the soil concentration by 1 μ/g per 50 mg/m2 applied.  相似文献

Bacterial black spot of corn-salad ( Valerianella locusta ) caused by Acidovorax valerianellae appeared in France in the beginning of the 1990s. The disease is now widespread in the main area of corn-salad production and is responsible for high depreciation and significant economic losses every year. A semiselective medium is described for the detection of the bacterium in various environments and to identify primary sources of inoculum. The medium TSAV (tryptic soy broth, 3 g L−1, agar 15 g L−1, 5-fluorouracyl 5 mg L−1, novobiocin 5 mg L−1, propiconazole 5 mg L−1) increased chances of obtaining cultures of A. valerianellae from naturally infested soil and from root-debris. Using TSAV, the pathogen was detected in root-debris up to 39 days after the harvest of a diseased crop. As only a few days usually separates harvest from the next sowing date, soil is likely to be an important source of inoculum for the next crop.  相似文献

Pot and field tests were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of pyribenzoxim for winter weeds in wheat. In the pot tests, pyribenzoxim, at 50 g ha−1, controlled certain biotypes of blackgrass, including a fenoxaprop-P-ethyl-resistant biotype (the "Notts" biotype). A chlorotoluron-resistant blackgrass (the "Peldon" biotype) was not controlled. Cleaver, at the three-to-four-leaf stage, was completely controlled by pyribenzoxim at 30 g ha−1. In the field, the application in December gave good control of common chickweed, but did not control other weeds. No damage to wheat was observed with this rate of pyribenzoxim in December. The application in March gave complete control of blackgrass , hairy chess, and soft brome at 70 g ha−1, and cleaver at 140 g ha−1. The partial control of corn poppy and field violet was achieved. The March application scorched the wheat at 50–70 g ha−1, with prolonged stunting at 100–140 g ha−1. In conclusion, it was shown that pyribenzoxim had potential as a wheat herbicide, but needed further fine-tuning to find an optimum dosage.  相似文献
