Sexual performance of rams reared with or without females after weaning   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of postweaning exposure to females on the subsequent sexual performance of young rams. Twenty-five crossbred rams were reared in a group with ovariectomized females from 4.5 to 9 mo of age. Ewes were brought into estrus every 2 wk during this period. A companion group of 23 crossbred rams was not exposed to females following weaning. Four 30-min sexual performance tests were administered at 10 mo of age. Rams reared with males and females (RMF) exhibited more mounts (P less than .001) and more ejaculations (P less than .002) than rams reared only with males (RM). The frequency of successful matings by the latter group did not increase with experience. Nine rams were sexually inactive in the sexual performance tests. Follow-up tests revealed that two of the RMF rams and one RM ram developed and maintained a sexual preference for males. The six remaining rams eventually mated with females when tested in familiar pens and subsequently exhibited normal levels of sexual performance even when tested in an unfamiliar enclosure. Exposure to ewes during the postweaning prepubertal period enhanced sexual performance. However, early exposure to females did not ensure that all males developed sexual preferences for females. The environmental context in which sexual performance tests are administered may inhibit the expression of heterosexual behavior in a small percentage of animals. We tested the hypothesis that expression of sexual behavior in bulls is affected by the manner in which they are exposed to unrestrained, sexually receptive females. Twelve Angus bulls were used in a crossover design involving two treatments, each tested four times for a total of eight tests for each bull. Sexual interactions were quantified for each of four, 30-min periods under the following treatments: 1) exposure to each of four estrual females in sequence (SEQ); or 2) exposure to four estrual females as a group (GRP). Bulls were blocked into three testing groups, the order of which was stratified across eight test days. The order in which bulls were tested on a particular day had no effect on bulls' expression of mount interactions, or flehmen responses, suggesting that each group of bulls had similar sexual motivation at the beginning of each test. However, the bull testing order x treatment x time interaction influenced mounting interval (P = 0.08), copulation frequency (P <0.05), and copulation success ratio (P <0.05). When bulls were in GRP and tested first on test days, more (P <0.05) copulations were distributed to the first three females encountered compared with either the fourth female (P <0.05) or to each of the other females in SEQ (P <0.05). During later tests, other bulls in GRP were not able to copulate as frequently (P <0.05) with each female, displayed lower (P <0.05) copulation success ratios, and were allowed copulations by fewer (P <0.05) females during each 30-min test. When bulls were in SEQ, they displayed similar numbers of copulations regardless of the order in which they were tested, and had stable mounting intervals; however, copulation success ratio decreased (P <0.05) more rapidly during subsequent tests. Flehmen responses were initially displayed more frequently (P <0.05) when bulls were in GRP, but this effect diminished during subsequent 30-min tests. In conclusion, exposure of bulls to GRP induced greater sexual responsiveness than SEQ; however, this effect was due to enhanced sexual activity during the early stages of sexual encounters and with females that were not recently mated. Interestingly, bulls seem to repeatedly copulate with each individual female until, apparently, female sexual receptivity became attenuated. Thereafter, recently mated females allowed fewer episodes of repeated copulations, but they did not completely cease copulating with novel bulls.  相似文献

The mating management of pigs is conducted under a wide spectrum of management techniques because females are variously hand-mated, pen-mated, or artificially inseminated. Factors that may affect the onset of estrus when hand-mating are boar exposure, method of housing females after weaning, season, type of facilities, and parity. The expression of sexual behavior in both male and female pigs can be influenced by a variety of physiologic, psychological, and environmental factors. To optimize the efficiency of estrous detection, females should not receive boar stimuli just prior to estrous detection when either hand-mated or artificially inseminated. When females are pen-mated, management procedures need to be employed to prevent an excessive number of estrous females from accumulating, which leads to a decrease in boar fertility.  相似文献

Abstract

Aggressive and sexual behaviour in entire males and females were studied on 408 pigs. The sum of aggressive interactions in the pen during routine feeding (ALP) was lowest in single-sex pens with females. ALP was higher at 132 than at 155 days. High ALP correlated with high average growth rate. Aggressive interactions in a competition test (IA) increased after slaughter of the three fastest-growing pigs in a pen (at 155 days), although the slaughtered pigs had initiated the most IA earlier (at 132 days). Entire male pigs displayed more sexual behaviour (mounting) than females. In 15% of entire males and 6% of females there were health problems specifically involving lameness or injured legs or feet. Five entire males and one female were euthanized in response to lameness or leg fracture. The rearing of entire male pigs may cause welfare problems, given their higher levels of aggression and sexual behaviour.  相似文献

Our previous research has identified the granulin (grn) and p130 genes as sex steroid-regulated genes in the neonatal rat hypothalamus that might be involved in sexual differentiation of the brain. Since phthalate/adipate esters such as di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), diisononyl phthalate (DINP), and di-2-ethylhexyl adipate (DEHA) are suspected to interfere with the endocrine system as environmental endocrine disruptors having estrogenic or antiandrogenic properties, these chemicals may affect sexual differentiation of the brain. The present study assessed the effects of perinatal exposure to DBP, DINP, and DEHA on grn and p130 mRNA expressions in the hypothalamus on postnatal day (PND) 7 and sexual behaviors after maturation in rats. Maternal rats were given a phytoestrogen-free diet containing different doses of DBP (20, 200, 2,000, and 10,000 ppm), DINP (40, 400, 4,000, and 20,000 ppm) and DEHA (480, 2,400, and 12,000 ppm) from gestational day 15 to the day of weaning (PND 21). DBP and DINP exposure during the perinatal period resulted in an increase in hypothalamic grn and p130 mRNA levels in females and males, respectively, but DEHA exposure decreased expression levels of grn in males and p130 in females, although the effects were not dose-dependent. After maturation, male rats that were exposed to several doses of DBP, DINP, and DEHA displayed decreased copulatory behavior. The lordosis quotient was decreased in females perinatally exposed to DBP, DINP, and DEHA at all the doses used. On the other hand, serum levels of LH and FSH in both sexes and the estrous cycles in females were not affected by the treatments. These results suggest that inappropriate expression of grn and/or p130 genes in the brains of male and female neonatal rats by perinatal exposure to these chemicals may exert permanent effects on the hypothalamus, thereby decreasing sexual behavior after maturation.  相似文献

In our continuing effort to generate transgenic chickens, sonoporation was chosen to insert an exogenous gene into the chicken genome. An EGFP expression vector (pCAG‐EGFPac) and microbubbles were injected into the central disc of stage‐X blastoderm or the germinal crescent of stage‐4 embryos, followed by ultrasonic vibration. Nineteen chicks out of 108 treated embryos hatched, six females and six males out of these 19 chicks grew to sexual maturity and two females and three males lived for 3 years. Genomic DNA from 17 out of 35 gonads from embryos and chicks that died before sexual maturity was EGFP‐positive by PCR. No EGFP sequence was detected in the genomic DNA of 322 embryos from six sexually mature females and the semen from four sexually mature males by PCR. When genomic DNA was obtained from various tissues of five 3‐year‐old chickens, the EGFP sequence was amplified from the genomic DNA of the breast muscle of a female (No. 85). The above sequence was subjected to DNA sequencing and verified to be the EGFP sequence. These results showed that sonoporation is an effective tool for the transduction of exogenous genes into chicken embryos for the generation of transgenic chickens.  相似文献

Gonadal steroid hormones influence an animal's sexual behavior through two primary means. During development they affect differentiation of the brain (primarily in males), and after puberty, circulating concentrations of steroids influence expression of sexual behaviors. In mammals, sexual behaviors of females are regarded as inherent (independent of steroids secreted by the developing ovary). Males, on the other hand, must undergo active differentiation that is brought about by actions of testicular steroids on the brain during discrete sensitive periods of early development. Sexual differentiation in mammals is referred to as processes of defeminization and masculinization. Defeminization is loss of behavioral traits inherent to females and occurs prenatally in sheep but postnatally in swine. Comparative data are lacking for cattle, but preliminary evidence indicates prenatal defeminization of sexual behaviors. Masculinization is acquisition of behavioral traits characteristic of males. Adult females of all three species show mounting behavior after prolonged treatment with testosterone, and in cattle and swine, there is, as yet, no strong evidence that males undergo masculinization of sexual behaviors. In sheep, limited observations are suggestive of two sensitive periods for masculinization; one prenatally and one postnatally. The earlier concept that differentiation of sexual behaviors in mammals occurs prenatally in species with a long gestation and postnatally in species with a short gestation must now be modified in view of recent findings in swine, in which defeminization occurs postnatally. Further studies will likely identify additional species differences with respect to differentiation of sexual behaviors.  相似文献

Development of sexual and aggressive behaviors in Hereford bulls   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The purpose of this study was to describe maturation-related changes in the sexual and aggressive behaviors of Hereford bulls. Two groups of 13 and 14 bulls, respectively, were tested for sexual and aggressive behaviors every 3 mo from 3 to 24 mo of age. At 3 and 6 mo of age, the bulls were exposed, as groups, to two estrous females, whereas at 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, and 24 mo these bulls were tested under each of the following several treatment conditions: 1) individual tests (single males were exposed to single females), 2) small-group tests (three or four bulls:three females), 3) large-group tests (13 or 14 bulls:3 females), and 4) male-only tests (13 or 14 bulls were placed in the test arena in the absence of females). Most bulls consistently mounted females by 9 mo of age. Twenty-one of the 27 bulls (78%) attained their first ejaculation at either 12 or 15 mo of age. The frequency of mounting without ejaculation was greatest in large-group tests at 12 mo of age, and ejaculation frequency peaked at 18 mo. The incidence of male-male mounting in large-group tests (with females) did not appreciably change from 3 to 24 mo, whereas male-male mounting in male-only tests was greatest at 9 and 24 mo. We conclude that sexual performance data obtained in serving capacity tests administered to yearling bulls before 18 mo of age may underestimate the mating potential of certain individuals.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

叶城沙蜥是一种主要分布于中国新疆南部地区的蜥蜴,通过测量和比较采自新疆塔里木盆地且末县叶城沙蜥的个体大小以及口宽等8个形态特征,研究了叶城沙蜥的两性异形。研究共采集叶城沙蜥62只,其中成年雌性个体27只,雄性个体35只。结果显示:(1)叶城沙蜥雌雄性成体的体长有显著差异,雄性大于雌性,表明叶城沙蜥具有雄性偏大的两性异形模式;(2)叶城沙蜥其他身体形态特征中尾长、腹长和头长3个特征有显著差异,其中雄性的尾长和头长大于雌性,而雌性的腹长大于雄性;(3)叶城沙蜥雌雄性个体间的口宽、眼间距等其他形态特征则没有显著差异。叶城沙蜥的两性异形表现为雄性大于雌性,并且雄性具有更大的头部和更长的尾部,雌性具有更长有腹部,这可能是雄性个体面临的性选择压力与雌性个体面临的繁殖压力共同作用的结果。  相似文献

The objectives of the current study were to investigate the additive genetic associations between heifer pregnancy at 16 months of age (HP16) and age at first calving (AFC) with weight gain from birth to weaning (WG), yearling weight (YW) and mature weight (MW), in order to verify the possibility of using the traits measured directly in females as selection criteria for the genetic improvement of sexual precocity in Nelore cattle. (Co)variance components were estimated by Bayesian inference using a linear animal model for AFC, WG, YW and MW and a nonlinear (threshold) animal model for HP16. The posterior means of direct heritability estimates were: 0.45 ± 0.02; 0.10 ± 0.01; 0.23 ± 0.02; 0.36 ± 0.01 and 0.39 ± 0.04, for HP16, AFC, WG, YW and MW, respectively. Maternal heritability estimate for WG was 0.07 ± 0.01. Genetic correlations estimated between HP16 and WG, YW and MW were 0.19 ± 0.04; 0.25 ± 0.06 and 0.14 ± 0.05, respectively. The genetic correlations of AFC with WG, YW and MW were low to moderate and negative, with values of − 0.18 ± 0.06; − 0.22 ± 0.05 and − 0.12 ± 0.05, respectively. The high heritability estimated for HP16 suggests that this trait seem to be a better selection criterion for females sexual precocity than AFC. Long-term selection for animals that are heavier at young ages tends to improve the heifers sexual precocity evaluated by HP16 or AFC. Predicted breeding values for HP16 can be used to select bulls and it can lead to an improvement in sexual precocity. The inclusion of HP16 in a selection index will result in small or no response for females mature weight.  相似文献

While wing form is known to differ between males and females of the genus Culicoides, detailed studies of sexual dimorphism are lacking. In this study, we analyze sex-specific differences in the wing form of 5 species of the subgenus Avaritia, using geometric morphometrics and comparative phylogenetic methods. Our results confirm the existence of marked sexual dimorphism in the wing form of the studied species and reveal for the first time that while there is a shared general pattern of sexual shape dimorphism within the subgenus, sexual size dimorphism, and particular features of sexual shape dimorphism differ among species. Sexual shape dimorphism was found to be poorly associated to size and the evolutionary history of the species. The tight association of sexual shape dimorphism with aspect ratio suggests that the shape of the wing is optimized for the type of flight of each sex, that is, dispersal flight in females versus aerobatic flight in males. Moreover, the fact that interspecific shape differences are greater and more strongly associated to aspect ratio in males than in females might be indicating that in males the selective pressures affecting flight performance characteristics are more heterogeneous and/or stronger than in females among the studied species.  相似文献

The purpose of the following study was to determine the effects of group size and the male-to-female ratio on the sexual and aggressive behaviors of bulls in the context of serving capacity tests. Tests were administered to two groups of 13 and 14 polled Hereford bulls, respectively, under four test conditions in which the number of bulls and the ratio of males to females was varied. The test conditions were as follows: 1) individual tests (single males were exposed to single females), 2) small-group tests (three or four bulls:three females), 3) large-group tests (13 or 14 bulls:3 females), and 4) male-only test (13 or 14 bulls were placed in the test area in the absence of females). In addition, the sexual performance of 44 Hereford and 12 Angus bulls was compared when competing (small-group tests) vs not competing (individual tests) for females. Ejaculation rate (serving capacity) was similar in individual and small-group tests in which a male-to-female ratio of approximately 1:1 was maintained. Increasing the male-to-female ratio to approximately 4.5:1 enhanced levels of aggression and reduced overall sexual performance. Angus bulls were more aggressive than their Hereford counterparts when competing for females and exhibited lower (P less than .05) ejaculation rates in small-group tests than when evaluated individually. We concluded that the sexual performance of polled Hereford bulls can be reliably evaluated when tested in small groups as long as a 1:1 male-to-female ratio is approximated.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare the sexual performance of rams that differed in age (maturation) and sexual experience. Twenty-four ram lambs (8 mo of age) and 21 rams (20 mo of age) were individually exposed to four females in hormonally induced estrus for 30 min on five occasions, 7 d apart. Half (12) the ram lambs and nine of the yearlings were sexually naive at the start of testing (had been denied access to females since weaning); the remaining males were sexually experienced. The sexual performance of the virgin rams was poorer during the initial exposure to females than in subsequent tests, whereas the sexual behavior of the sexually experienced males did not change over the days of testing. Sexually naive ram lambs and rams exhibited an improvement in sexual performance between Tests 1 and 2; during Test 3 to 5 the sexual performance (ejaculations per test) of sexually naive and experienced rams was similar. The only effects of age (maturation) on sexual performance during the last three test days were a higher frequency of mounts without ejaculation plus mount attempts (P less than .03) and a greater number of mount interactions per ejaculation (P less than .02) by ram lambs. In conclusion, one or two relatively brief exposures to estrous females can bring the sexual performance of virgin rams up to levels comparable to that of experienced males. Also, ram lambs in good condition exhibit acceptable levels of sexual performance.  相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to determine the effects of unrestrained females on sexual behavior of bulls. Twelve Angus bulls were used in three Latin square replicates where sexual interactions between one bull and one female were quantified for each of four 60-min tests (T1, T2, T3, and T4, respectively). All bulls received the following treatments: 1) exposure to four estrual females in sequence (A-B-C-D); 2) exposure to two estrual females in alternating sequence (E-F-E-F); 3) exposure repeatedly to one estrual female (G-G-G-G); and 4) exposure repeatedly to one diestrous female (CON). During T1, mount interactions, mounts with intromission and mounting intervals were similar when bulls were in A-B-C-D, E-F-E-F, or G-G-G-G. Fewer mount interactions, no mounts with intromission, and increased mounting intervals (P < 0.05) occurred in CON. During T2, there were more mount interactions, more mounts with intromission, and decreased mounting intervals (P < 0.05) when bulls were in A-B-C-D or E-F-E-F compared with when they were in G-G-G-G or CON. More mount interactions (P < 0.05) occurred in G-G-G-G compared with CON, but mounts with intromission and mounting intervals did not differ. During T3, more mount interactions (P < 0.05) occurred in G-G-G-G than in CON; otherwise, sexual behaviors were similar among treatments. Mounting intervals during T3 were similar among A-B-C-D, E-F-E-F, and G-G-G-G, but were all decreased (P < 0.05) compared with CON. During T4, more mount interactions, more mounts with intromission, and decreased mounting intervals (P < 0.05) occurred when bulls were in A-B-C-D compared with other treatments. Mount interactions were similar when bulls were in E-F-E-F, G-G-G-G, or CON; however, more (P < 0.05) mounts with intromission occurred when bulls were in E-F-E-F compared with G-G-G-G or CON. Mounting intervals during T4 were decreased (P < 0.05) in E-F-E-F compared with the CON treatment, whereas in G-G-G-G, they were intermediate. Mounts without intromission were not affected by female novelty or receptivity, but novel females induced more flehmen responses. In conclusion, novel, females, overall, enhanced sexual activity of bulls; however, bull sexual responses diminished after 2 h, even when a novel female was presented. Estrual females that were repeatedly paired with bulls displayed diminished sexual receptivity, but if mated females were rested for 60 min, they allowed further copulation from familiar bulls that were not sexually sated.  相似文献

The objective of this investigation was to determine the extent to which the sexual performance of adult bulls (18 to 24 mo of age) can be predicted by prepuberal sexual behaviors. Tests were administered to 121 polled Hereford bulls to determine whether adult sexual performance (especially serving capacity or ejaculation rate) was related to 1) whether or not the subjects mounted estrous females at 6 mo of age, 2) the age at which the bulls attained their first ejaculation, 3) the frequency of sexual behaviors exhibited in heterosexual interactions and 4) the frequency of male-male mounting exhibited in all-male groups. None of the above measures reliably predicted adult serving capacity. Prepuberal interest in mounting other males and estrous females and the age at which ejaculatory competence was attained bore little relationship to serving capacity at 18 to 24 mo. Individual differences in rate of ejaculation were consistent from one age to another only after the bulls had reached 18 mo. We concluded that the sexual behaviors of prepuberal beef bulls were of limited usefulness in predicting adult sexual performance.  相似文献

The extent of sexual selection in two girdled lizard species was evaluated by measuring sexual dimorphism in those characters normally affected by sexual selection. Neither Cordylus niger, a cool-adapted species, nor C. cordylus, a warm-adapted species, displayed any notable sexual differences in asymptotic body sizes, but both species displayed slight dimorphism in head size measurements. The C. niger sample contained more large males than large females, which may be attributed to a lower growth rate in females. In the cool Saldanha area, females of both species lack generation glands. In the warmer Gansbaai area, these glands are present in females of C. cordylus, but in lower numbers than in males. Sex ratios favouring females, have been recorded for both species. The observed sexual dimorphism in the two species seems to be mainly the result of differential energy allocation by females, and not of sexual selection perse.  相似文献

Reproductive and life history patterns in reptiles are tightly related to the environmental conditions, so male reproductive cycles have been historically characterized as continuous, for tropical lizards, or seasonal, for temperate lizards. However, males of Liolaemus and Phymaturus lizards (Liolaemidae), from cold temperate climates of high altitudes or latitudes in Argentina and Chile, have developed a variety of reproductive cycles to coordinate with the short female reproductive season and to deal with the low frequency of reproductive females in the population. Using gonadal histology and morphological analysis, we describe the male reproductive biology, fat storage and sexual dimorphism of the viviparous lizards Liolaemus sarmientoi and Liolaemus magellanicus that inhabit an austral grass steppe at 51°S, in the southern limit of the American continent. Males of L. sarmientoi and L. magellanicus are reproductively available during the entire activity season of approximately 5 months. In addition, males of both species exhibit greater body sizes than females in morphological variables relevant in sexual selection. Meanwhile, females of both species exhibit larger inter‐limb length than conspecific males, which suggests fecundity selection to increase space for a larger litter size. The continuous sperm production throughout the activity season allows these liolaemids to mate at any time when females ovulate, representing a selective advantage to deal with the short activity season and the adversities of the cold environment they inhabit.  相似文献

The relationships between sexual and aggressive behaviors and levels of plasma testosterone and luteinizing hormone (LH) were examined in Hereford bulls at 18 and 24 mo of age. Concentrations of hormones in bulls during periods of sexual rest (13 blood samples collected from each animal during a 24-h period) were compared with individual differences in sexual and aggressive behaviors when exposed to restrained females, either individually or in groups. Nearly all correlation coefficients were low and nonsignificant. It was concluded that individual differences in sexual performance and aggressive behavior cannot be predicted based on circulating levels of testosterone and LH in bulls during periods of sexual rest.  相似文献

During the breeding season three experiments were conducted to evaluate the LH and testosterone (T) response of rams with male sexual orientation (e.g., male-oriented homosexual rams) to female sheep, to male sheep, and to treatment with LHRH. Male-oriented rams were identified through a series of sexual performance and sexual preference tests. Treatments included exposure to estrous females and to males for 15 min (Exp. 1) and exposure to estrous females and to males for 8 h (Exp. 2). Behavioral responses to stimulus animals were recorded. In Exp. 2 homosexual rams mounted males more than females (P less than .02) and exhibited more flehmen (P less than .002) and investigatory sniffs (P less than .01) when exposed to males vs females. Acts of aggression (butting the stimulus animals) did not differ by gender (P greater than .1). Flehmen and butting were positively correlated to LH secretion (P less than .02) of rams exposed to females but not to males. In Exp. 1, LH concentration determined every 15 min for 6 h was not affected (P greater than .05) by the gender of the stimulus animal. In Exp. 2, LH pulse frequency and concentration were similar (P greater than .05) by treatment. The effects of coccidiosis on reproductive development of male Japanese quail were examined. Male Japanese quail were exposed to high (5 x 10(5) sporulated oocysts/quail) or low (5 x 10(3) sporulated oocysts/quail) doses of Eimeria uzura at 16 or 30 days of age and sampled at 37 days. Quail given high doses of coccidia had reduced testes weight and lowered circulating concentrations of androgen compared with control males. Low doses of coccidia did not affect testes weight but did result in elevated plasma androgen levels. There were no differences in average testes weights by 51 days; however, plasma androgen was still reduced in most groups. To study the effects of coccidiosis on egg production, males exposed to high doses of coccidia at 16 (16H) or 30 (30H) days of age were mated with control females, and control males were mated with control or 16H females. The onset of laying was delayed for 5 days in the control male: 16H female group. During the first week of production, eggs from females bred to 30H males had lower fertility and hatchability than those bred to control or 16H males. By the third week of production, levels of fertility were similar. Apparently, exposure of quails to coccidiosis before sexual maturation might result in long-term effects on later reproductive capability.  相似文献
