1. Japanese quail hens were housed from 6 to 26 weeks of age in cages providing areas of 150, 180, 210 and 240 cm2/bird.

2. Body weight gain, age at 50% egg production, mortality, hen‐day egg production and food conversion values showed significant improvement with proportionate increase in cage space per layer.

3. Egg weight gradually increased with age but shell thickness was influenced neither by age of the hen nor by stocking density.

4. Yolk index and colour were superior in the lowest stocking density (more cage space) group; other egg quality traits and egg weight were not influenced by stocking density.

5. The albumen index, internal quality unit, yolk index and yolk colour values increased with age.  相似文献

1. Fearfulness, shell colour, incidence and degree of shell whitening and the interval between ovipositions were studied in two populations of 30 brown egg laying hens with family histories of a low or a high incidence of egg shell whitening.

2. Hens of the population with the high incidence of whitening appeared to be more fearful than hens of the population with the low incidence of whitening.

3. Brown colouration of the egg shell and the incidence and degree of shell whitening declined as the hens aged.

4. Brown colouration and egg shell whitening were most pronounced on the blunt ends of the eggs.

5. A large part of the variation in egg shell whitening was attributable to the individual (hen) component of variance.

6. Differences in egg shell whitening, between the two populations, were detectable throughout the 26 weeks of the experiment.

7. Oviposition intervals were similar for normal and coated eggs when birds were not exposed to disturbance.

8. Disturbance of hens increased oviposition intervals and the incidence and degree of shell whitening, to a similar extent, in both populations.

9. It is concluded that stress‐related egg retention is not the sole factor responsible for abnormal egg shell whitening. Shell whitening may occur as a consequence of the premature termination of shell pigmentation as well as a consequence of the retardation of oviposition which occurs when hens are disturbed.  相似文献

1.?Two experiments were carried out to evaluate the suitability of an experimental laying hen genotype (SH) in organic egg production. SH had been selected over 25 generations on a low protein diet (130 g/kg) based on home grown feedstuffs. SH hens were compared with LSL (Experiment 1) and Hyline (Experiment 2) hens. The birds were kept in 12 aviary pens with access to outdoor runs.

2.?Four diets, which were different in each experiment, were used. A control diet was compared with diets based on feedstuffs supposed to be able to be grown and produced according to organic standards. The diets differed in the content of sulphur amino acids.

3.?There were no significant differences in mortality caused by diets or genotypes but an incidence of cannibalism occurred in one Hyline group fed on the diet with the lowest methionine content.

4.?Severe feather pecking of LSL birds occurred and was worst on the low protein diet. In Experiment 2, signs of feather pecking of birds on the low protein diet occurred at the end of the experiment, but there was no difference between the genotypes. There was no significant difference in number of eggs produced between diets. Egg weight was influenced by diets in both experiments and by genotype in Experiment 2. Number of misplaced eggs was higher in SH hens in both experiments. There were few significant diet × genotype interactions.

5.?The use of the outdoor area was influenced by diets and genotype in both experiments.

6.?In conclusion, diets low in methionine content influenced predominantly plumage condition and egg weight, although production of eggs by number was unaffected. The SH hen adapted well to organic conditions, as did the Hyline genotype.  相似文献

Two replicates of each of 4 light patterns were imposed on 4 breeds of laying hen. The light patterns were designed to induce sexual maturity, defined as 50% production, at a range of ages. Within‐room treatments were ad libitum or rationed feeding during rearing and 4 breeds, namely ISA Brown, Hisex Brown, Ross G‐Link Brown and Shaver Brown. A total of 6144 birds were used to test the 32 treatments.

2. Age at 50% production was significantly affected by both lighting treatment and rearing regimen.

3. The light pattern treatments had no significant effect on any cumulative performance variable measured from 20 to 80 weeks of age.

4. Breed had a significant effect on eggs/hen housed, rate of lay, egg weight, egg output and food intake.

5. Rationing feeding during rearing, by holding intake at its 6‐week level from 6 to 14 weeks of age, was associated with significantly lower egg production, but had no effect on egg weight or food intake during lay.

6. Although both rearing and light treatments influenced age at 50% production, this character was not correlated with egg weight or egg production.

7. It is suggested that modern hybrid laying stocks are so genetically predisposed to ovulate that they are becoming refractory towards treatments hitherto regarded as influential.  相似文献

1. Differences were found among eight populations of White Plymouth Rock pullets in the frequency of broken eggs.

2. The shells of such eggs were thinner than those of intact eggs in seven of the populations.

3. The number of defective eggs, the specific gravity of the eggs, and the percentage hen‐day egg production of normal eggs were significantly correlated within populations with the incidence of broken eggs.

4. No significant correlations were found within populations between the incidence of egg breakage and either egg weight, body weight, or shank length.  相似文献

1. Oviposition times were recorded for brown and white egg‐laying hybrids under 8, 10, 13 and 18 h photoperiods.

2. Mean oviposition time for both breeds was advanced relative to dusk by approximately 0.5 h for each 1 h extension of photoperiod.

3. Mean oviposition time for the brown egg hybrid was 1.2 to 1.4 h earlier than that of the white egg hybrid under each lighting regimen.

4. A genetic difference in phase setting of the Open Period for Luteinising Hormone (LH) release is the likely reason for the difference in mean time of lay of the two breeds. The difference is possibly one between brown and white hybrids generally, rather than between the particular varieties of hen used in this trial.

5. The proportion of the day in which eggs are laid is shorter under long photoperiods presumably because light at the end of the photoperiod inhibits the pre‐ovulatory surge of LH.  相似文献

1. Battery cages 460 mm in depth (deep) were compared with 305 mm cages (shallow); the two shapes provided equal areas per bird.

2. More eggs were produced per hen housed from 30 to 70 weeks in the shallow cages; the difference approached significance.

3. The pattern of feeding activity over the day was significantly more U‐shaped in the shallow cages; this pattern accords more closely with physiological requirements.

4. Feather damage caused by pecking was slightly but significantly more severe in the deep cages at 70 weeks.

5. The proportion of cracked eggs (collected from 60 to 70 weeks) was significantly lower in the shallow cages.

6. The arrangement of the hens was such that within the shallow cages a higher proportion of birds was present in the front half.

7. It is suggested that some of the advantages conferred by the shallow cage may be related to the greater accessibility of the food trough.  相似文献

1. Three sets of experiments were performed on two batches of ostrich chicks to investigate the factors affecting the pecking and feeding behaviour of grouped individuals.

2. Chicks showed no significant alteration of their feeding behaviour in response to raising pen walls in the rearing facility from 30 to 60 cm.

3. Further analysis on a different set of birds revealed consistent short term individual differences in the frequency of feeding and non‐feeding pecks.

4. There were significant pen effects on behaviour suggesting the possible development of a pen ‘culture’ of pecking behaviour.

5. Pecking behaviours in 26 to 33 d‐old chicks, with the exception of drinking, were generally negatively correlated, so any non‐food pecking by a chick was generally associated with fewer pecks targeted at food.

6. By the age of two months chicks were pecking at food on the floor to a far greater extent than at any food presented in food trays.  相似文献

1. This study investigated effects of plastic anti‐pecking devices on food intake and behaviour to assess their applicability in commercial layer flocks.

2. In experiment 1, 72 individually caged ISA Brown pullets were fitted at 16 weeks of age (point of lay) with either ‘ring’ or ‘bumper’ beak devices or no device (control), half being fed on pellets and half on mash. The devices were held in place by lugs inserted in the nares.

3. There was evidence of discomfort immediately after fitting the devices, but not thereafter. In the first week, the devices reduced food intake, and were removed from 7 (15%) birds that lost weight consistently. Between 16 and 21 weeks, however, there were no significant effects of beak treatment or food form on either total food intake or egg production with the 65 remaining birds.

4. Beak treatment did not affect feeding efficiency (food intake per minute of feeding). The only behaviour affected was pecking at birds in adjacent cages, which was reduced with the ring device.

5. At 21 weeks, the birds were placed together in groups of 4 to 6 in 12 pens, each group consisting of birds from one of the 6 original treatments, and their behaviour was observed in experiment 2 between 21 and 23 weeks.

6. The only effects of beak treatment on behaviour were that pecking at pen walls was increased with the ring device, while pulling and eating feathers from group mates was seen mainly with control birds fed on pellets. Two birds were cannibalised in a control group on pellets.

7. Devices came off 3 (7%) birds in experiment 1 and were replaced, and rings slipped over lower mandibles of 2 (5%) birds in experiment 2 and were corrected.

8. At 23 weeks, beak lengths were increased with ring and bumper treatments, and pecking damage scores were low with all treatments.

9. It is concluded that these devices are not applicable commercially, but further trials would be justified with new improved designs.  相似文献

1. More than 9000 eggs, each laid by a known hen, were examined and malformations of six types recorded: double‐yolked, A, B, rough, shell‐less and thin‐shelled.

2. A and B malformations are those seen in, respectively, an egg that is held in the shell gland for an abnormally long period and one that reaches the shell gland while an A‐egg is still there; many of the eggs recorded as rough‐shelled were probably A‐eggs for which the corresponding B‐eggs had been lost.

3. The birds were of three strains: a medium‐body‐weight brown‐egg‐laying strain and a White Leghorn strain, both of commercial origin, and a laboratory strain of Brown Leghorns.

4. The incidences of egg malformation in the three strains were 8.3, 9.2 and 0.5%.

5. A‐, B‐ and rough‐shelled eggs constituted more than two‐thirds of all malformed eggs.

6. Evidence from two generations suggests that these malformations have a high heritability.  相似文献

1. The incidence of defective eggs during the first 60 weeks of age increased with time due to significant increases in broken and membranous eggs in a population of dwarf White Leghorn hens.

2. The production of double‐yolked eggs/100 hen d, high during the initial weeks of lay, rapidly declined and disappeared by 30 weeks of age.

3. The frequencies of broken, membranous and soft‐shelled eggs were significantly correlated with each other and with the frequency of multiple daily ovulations indicating a common aetiology for these defective egg types.

4. Double‐yolked eggs were produced by the heavier, earlier‐maturing pullets in the population.

5. Normal egg production in dwarf White Leghorns may be enhanced by reducing the incidence of defective eggs.  相似文献

Results from four experiments with laying hens have been re‐examined using the means of individual 28‐d periods during egg production to investigate the influence of the developing ovary and linoleate storage during growth on the linoleic acid requirement of the laying hen.

Apart from a possible beneficial effect during the first few weeks of production, little increase in egg weight occurs when birds are fed on conventional rearing diets and then fed on laying diets containing linoleic acid in excess of requirement.

After depletion of linoleate reserves, dietary supplementation with linoleic acid significantly increases egg weight at any age.

The necessity of supplementing diets for laying hens with linoleic acid is discussed.  相似文献

1. The paper compares between three genetically different lines in their egg weight and shell thickness response to a 28‐h cycle.

2. The response in shell thickness to ahemeral lighting was more rapid (2.2 d) than for egg weight (4.2 d).

3. Differences between genotypes were evident in both the speed and magnitude of response.

4. Overall, egg weight and shell thickness on the 28‐h cycle were 7% and 8% greater than on 24 h.

5. The allometric increase indicates that the increase in shell weight was on average 14% more than the increase in egg weight.  相似文献

1. The osmotic pressures of the contents of the alimentary tract from the adult hen and cockerel and rabbit were measured.

2. In the rabbit osmolality of the fluids from the different segments of the digestive tract was similar (331 ± 12 mOsm) and slightly hypertonic to blood plasma (297 ± 0.12 mOsm).

3. In the hen osmotic pressures were: crop 537, gizzard 312, duodenum 571, proximal jejunum 650, distal jejunum 573, proximal ileum 514 and distal ileum 451 mOsm. Only osmolality of the crop contents was influenced by egg formation.

4. In the cockerel osmotic pressure in the alimentary tract followed the same pattern as the hen and was modified by the time of day.

5. Plasma osmolality in the fowl was about 320 mOsm. Absorption of water across the proximal jejunum is achieved therefore against a gradient of about 330 mOsm in the female and 420 mOsm in the male fowl.  相似文献

Small eggs constitute a high proportion of the eggs laid by pullets. The literature shows that chick hatching weight is strongly correlated with egg weight, but evidence on the influence of egg weight on hatchability and subsequent performance of chicks is less certain.

The aim of this experiment was to determine the profit returned at 12 weeks by broiler chickens hatched from eggs ranging in weight from 44 g. to 58 g. at one gram intervals and to determine how competitive and separate rearing might modify the relationship.

A total of 6000 eggs were collected during 10 days from a 28‐week‐old, broiler breeding flock and graded into the above mentioned egg weight classes. From these, a total of 3480 day‐old broilers were housed. Each egg weight class was equally represented and balanced for sex.

Hatchability and fertility showed no consistent trend with egg weight for eggs above 46 g., but below the 47 g. level there was a trend of declining fertility and hatchability.

A strong positive relationship was found between the weight of the chick at 1 day of age and egg weight for both males and females with no significant difference overall in body weight between the two sexes.

Body weight to 12 weeks was found to be strongly related to egg weight, in a linear fashion, though this influence declined with age.

There was a greater influence of egg weight on body weight at all ages in the separate rearing treatment compared with competitive rearing but this was not significant after 10 weeks.

Egg weight had an important bearing on body weight and profit at 12 weeks, but no effect on food conversion or mortality.

The increased profit over food costs per 100 day‐old chicks was found to be 52.75 cents for the separately reared birds respectively for each 3 g. increase in egg weight.  相似文献

1. The effect of egg shell cuticle removal, using a 14.7 mM solution of sodium hypochlorite, on the water vapour conductance of egg shells was studied in 5 species of domestic bird.

2. The water vapour conductance of fowl and Muscovy duck egg shells was not affected by the treatment.

3. Cuticle removal increased the conductance of turkey and goose shells, particularly those already relatively porous to water vapour.

4. Removal of cuticles from domestic duck egg shells increased water vapour conductance. In this case the effect was most marked for eggs with lower initial conductances.

5. The differing patterns of resistance to water vapour loss associated with egg shell cuticle are related to the ultrastructure of the cuticle itself, especially the number and size of cuticular fissures.

6. The results suggest that egg shell cuticle is a component in a series of resistances associated with the egg shell and that the use of Fick's Law is insufficient to explain water vapour diffusion across the shell.

7. Embryo survival may be improved by cuticle removal, though this may be limited to those species in which the cuticle restricts water vapour loss in initially low conductance egg shells.  相似文献

1. Japanese quail eggs from moderately heavier sires showed superior fertility; while fertile eggs from moderately heavier dams hatched slightly better than the eggs from lighter dams.

2. Higher rates of fertility and hatchability of Japanese quail eggs were observed from parents of 10 to 19 weeks of age, with peak fertility and hatchability at 14 and 12 weeks of age, respectively.

3. Sex ratios of 1:2 to 1:5 gave comparable fertility and hatchability results.

4. The hatching performance of quail eggs from cage and deep litter reared breeders was comparable.

5. Fertility and hatchability were directly proportional to the egg weight.

6. Quail egg shell colour, tints and blotches were found to influence hatching performance.

7. Storing quail eggs at 16 ± 2°C and 75 ± 5% relative humidity for more than 4 d reduced hatchability.

8. Hatchability of eggs stored at room temperature was improved if they were sealed in polyethylene bags.

9. Provision of light during the first 14 d of incubation resulted in a photo‐acceleration of about 3.2 h.  相似文献

1. Light‐ and medium‐hybrid laying hens received one of six diets (A, B, C, D, E and F) containing decreasing amounts (758, 560, 374, 270, 185 and 0 g/kg) of cereals and increasing amounts of unusual ingredients, from 22 weeks of age.

2. The diet containing no cereal and 225 g dried poultry manure/kg (diet F) caused a severe reduction in performance and was discontinued at 27 weeks of age; the other treatments were continued until 48 weeks of age.

3. In the case of medium hybrids, rate of lay (number of eggs/100 hen d) was similar with diets A, B and C and about 2 percentage points lower with diets D and E; egg output (g per hen d) tended to decrease slightly as dietary cereal concentration decreased.

4. In the case of light hybrids, rate of lay was about 5 percentage points lower with diets B, C and D and about 13 percentage points lower with diet E than with diet A.

5. Mortality was similar on each diet.

6. The effect of diet on live‐weight gain was inconsistent and statistically not significant.  相似文献

1.?Using the so-called TOBEC (Total Body Electrical Conductivity) method, which allows the determination of egg composition in vivo, correlations between egg composition, hatchability and hatched chicks’ development were studied.

2.?A total of 1500 hen eggs (Ross-308) were measured by TOBEC, and eggs with extremely high (10%, n = 150), extremely low (10%, n = 150) and average (10%, n = 150) electrical conductivity values were chosen for further investigation.

3.?During the incubation period, it was observed that eggs with high electrical conductivity had a significantly higher mortality than eggs with low electrical conductivity.

4.?It was observed that both the increase in electrical conductivity at the same egg weight, and the increase in egg weight at the same electrical conductivity resulted in an increase in the hatching weight.

5.?It was found that the dry matter, protein and fat content of the chicks hatched from eggs with low electrical conductivity was higher at hatching than that of the chicks hatched from eggs with high electrical conductivity.

6.?At 42 d of age the liveweight of cocks and pullets hatched from eggs with low electrical conductivity was 3·2 and 8·2% higher than the liveweight of cocks and pullets hatched from eggs with high electrical conductivity.

7.?Because of the higher liveweight at slaughter, there was a significant superiority of the chicks hatched from eggs with low electrical conductivity in the case of the examined carcase traits at slaughter.

8.?Similar tendencies were found also in the ratios of carcase variables to liveweight, but the between group differences were not statistically significant in this case.

9.?Based on the results it was concluded that TOBEC seems to be a useful method for separating eggs with different composition.

10.?This could be a good starting point for further in vivo investigations in order to clarify the effect of egg composition on hatchability and further development.  相似文献

1. Two experiments were conducted with laying pullets between 32 and 47 weeks of age. In each trial 1 728 White Leghorn and 1 728 crossbred pullets were used.

2. A series of diets of increasing protein content was offered. Protein quality was identical in all diets and tryptophan was demonstrated to be the most limiting amino acid in the protein mixture used.

3. The daily tryptophan requirement of the individual pullet was estimated, by indirect methods, to be 2.25 mg/g egg output plus 10.25 mg/kg body weight. Response curves for flocks of pullets are illustrated. Calculated optimum intakes of tryptophan for various ratios of costs of input to value of output are tabulated.

4. It is estimated that for a flock of mean body weight 1.5 kg, producing 55 g egg mass/hen d and consuming 110 g food/hen d, the optimum dietary tryptophan concentration is 1.7 g/kg when the marginal cost of supplying 1 kg tryptophan is 20 times the marginal value of 1 kg egg output.  相似文献
