OBJECTIVES: To assess the dietary habits of Balearic Islands' consumers who are successful in meeting current nutritional recommendations, to find clues for the development of future food-based dietary guidelines (FBDG) that would be relevant to this population. DESIGN: Cross-sectional nutritional survey carried out in the Balearic Islands between 1999 and 2000. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Dietary habits were assessed by means of 24-hour recall (two non-consecutive days: warm and cold season) and a food-frequency questionnaire in a random sample (n=1200, aged 16-65 years) living in private households. Differences in percentage of compliers with the intermediate nutritional objectives for the Spanish population and differences in food consumption patterns between genders and between high (above the upper quartile of intake) and low (below the lower quartile of intake) consumers of fat, saturated fatty acids (SFA), fibre, and fruit and vegetables were analysed. RESULTS: Gender differences were observed in nutrient and energy intakes, as well as in attainment of the recommendations. Less than 25% of the population reached the intermediate nutritional recommendations for iodine, fruit, carbohydrates, SFA, fibre and vegetables. Low fat/SFA and high fruit and vegetables/fibre consumers kept a diet in line with the traditional Balearic diet and prevailing dietary pyramids, which ensured better compliance with the nutritional goals. CONCLUSIONS: The intermediate nutritional objectives for the Spanish population could be achieved through maintenance of the traditional Balearic diet, a Mediterranean-type diet in the Balearic population. Therefore, this dietary model could be used to develop FBDG relevant to this population.  相似文献

Four Scythian kurgans of the burial site Beloe Lake-3 were studied in the Turan–Uyuk Depression in the Republic of Tyva. They were constructed about 2565–2390 calendar years ago (calibrated with deviation 1 σ). Soil formation after 2500 yrs of the construction of the kurgans was examined in the interkurgan area. The properties of the background surface and ancient buried soils have much in common, and the difference between the soils of the four kurgans is small. This attests to the fact that the paleoclimatic conditions in the period of the necropolis construction remained stable and were similar to the modern climatic conditions. According to palynological data, the climate at the stage of the construction of the first two kurgans was a little more humid in comparison with the modern climate; it became somewhat drier after 95 years, during the construction of the third kurgan (2425 cal. BP) and again tended to humidification at the final stage of the necropolis creation. These changes in the paleoclimatic conditions are indicated by variations in the structure and composition of associations of xerophytes, mesophytes, hydrophytes, and ruderal plants. At the Uyuk stage, the area was mainly occupied by steppe phytocenoses with a predominance of xerophytes over mesophytes, and hydrophilous vegetation was allocated to moistened habitats near water reservoirs. Larch forests grew near water bodies. The variable anthropogenic impact on the landscape was stronger at the initial and final stages of the construction of the Uyuk culture necropolis.  相似文献

The causes of the recent heavy elephant mortality in the Tsavo ecosystem between 1975 and 1980 were investigated. Poaching and drought conditions were thought to be the main reason.Whether the cause of death was poaching or other factors was ascertained from the examination of carcasses in the field. In the former case the front part of the cranium was cut while those of the unpoached animals were intact. Rainfall data were analysed to assess whether drought conditions occurred during this period, which might have caused the recent mortality. Other possible causes of mortality were assessed from interviews with park wardens and rangers and from records on poaching incidents and ivory recoveries.The overall results of this study show that the recent heavy elephant mortality in Tsavo ecosystem was caused mainly by poaching preceded by drought. It is therefore recommended that future conservation measures for the remaining elephant population require control of poaching, especially in wet season dispersal areas which are not under park management.  相似文献

Silcretes and associated deep weathering-profiles have been reported in the Cobar area of New South Wales. Re-examination of the relevant field sites and a detailed laboratory study of rock samples showed that siliceous materials outcropping at these locations are bedrock essentially unaltered since Palaeozoic burial and deformation. There is no reason for applying the term silcrete to any of the rock outcrops we have examined. Geomorphic inferences that depend on the presence of silcrete in the Cobar area are therefore open to question.  相似文献

Maturity is one of the most important factors associated with the quality evaluation of fruit and vegetables. This work aims to investigate the effect of the maturation process of the olive fruit on the phenolic fraction and fatty acid of irrigated Chétoui cultivar. The phenolic composition was studied by using reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography followed by LC-MS and GC-MS analyses and fatty acids by GC. Oleuropein was the major phenolic compound at all stages of ripeness. Unexpectedly, both phenolic compounds hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein exhibited the same trends during maturation. Indeed, the oleuropein levels decreased during the ripening process and were not inversely correlated with the concentrations of hydroxytyrosol. The antioxidant capacity of olive extracts was evaluated by measuring the radical scavenging effect on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and the beta-carotene linoleate model system. The IC 50 and AAC values of the olive extracts decreased from 3.68 to 1.61 microg/mL and from 645 to 431, respectively. There was a correlation between the antioxidant activity and the oleuropein concentration. The fatty acid composition was quantified in olive fruit during maturation and showed that fatty acids were characterized by the highest level of oleic acid, which reached 65.2%.  相似文献

Abstract

A number of iron oxides (hematite, goethite, lepidocrocite, maghemite, and magnetite) or short‐range ordered precipitates (ferrihydrite) may be found in soil environments, but in the rhizosphere the presence of organic ligands released by plants (exudates) or microorganisms promote the formation of ferrihydrite. Iron ions are liberated into soil solution by acidic weathering of minerals and then precipitated either locally or after translocation in soil environments. Humic and fulvic acids as well as organic substances produced by plants and microorganisms are involved in the weathering of primary minerals. Organic compounds play a very important role in the hydrolytic reactions of iron and on the formation, nature, surface properties, reactivity, and transformation of Fe oxides. Organic substances present in the rhizosphere interact with Fe promoting the formation of ferrihydrite and organo‐mineral complexes. The solubility of Fe precipitation products is usually low. However, the formation of soluble complexes of Fe(II) or Fe(III) with organic ligands, usually present in the rhizosphere increases the solubility of Fe‐oxides. Mobilization of Fe from Fe oxides by siderophores is of great importance in natural systems. They can form stable Fe(III) complexes (pK up to 32) and thus mobilize Fe from Fe(III) compounds. These higher Fe concentrations are important for the supply of Fe to plant roots which excrete organic acids at the soil–root interface. Iron oxides adsorb a wide variety of organic and inorganic anions and cations, which include natural organics, nutrients, and xenobiotics. There is competition between anions and cations for the surfaces of Fe‐oxides. Root exudates suppress phosphate or sulfate adsorption on Fe‐oxides. This is a mechanism by which plant roots mobilize adsorbed phosphate and improve their phosphate supply. Anions adsorption on iron oxides modify their dispersion/flocculation behavior and thus their mobility in the soil system. That can increase or decrease the possibility of contact between Fe‐oxides and organics or organisms able to dissolve them.  相似文献

Data on the morphology and radiocarbon ages of humus of dark vertic quasigley nonsaline clayey soils with alternating bowl-shaped (Pellic Vertisols (Humic, Stagnic)) and diapiric (Haplic Vertisols (Stagnic, Protocalcic)) structures are discussed, and the genetic concept for these soils is suggested. The studied soils develop on loesslike medium clay in the bottom of a large closed depression on the Eisk Peninsula in the lowest western part of the Kuban–Azov Lowland. The lateral and vertical distribution of humus in the studied gilgai catena displays a lateral transition of a relatively short humus profile of the accumulative type with a maximum near the surface and with a sharp increase in 14C dates of humus in the deeper layers within the diapiric structure to the extremely deep humus profile with a maximum at the depth of 40–80 cm, with similar mean residence time of carbon within this maximum, and with a three times slower increase in 14C dates of humus down the profile within the bowl-shaped structure. The development of the gilgai soil combination is specified by the joint action of the lateral–upward squeezing of the material of the lower horizons from the nodes with an increased horizontal stress toward the zones a decreased horizontal stress, local erosional loss of soil material from the microhighs and its accumulation in the adjacent microlows, leaching of carbonates from the humus horizons in the microlows, and the vertical and lateral ascending capillary migration of the soil solutions with precipitation of calcium carbonates in the soils of microhighs.  相似文献

Sediment profiles from the floodplain of Morava River in the Czech Republic have been collected from exposed river banks (4–6 m long sections) and cores (2–4 m deep) and investigated using a set of geochemical proxies validated by granulometry and conventional geochemical analysis, outlined in our previous paper. The work was conducted to evaluate the increase in sedimentation rate during Medieval and modern time periods. Correlation of sediments along the current channel belt allows identification of two most important synchronous changes in the channel structure over the past 1300 years: in the 13th century and at the end of the 16th century. These changes could be related to central European climatic extremes rather than to land cover/land use practises. Analysis of the pollen record in peaty deposits at the floodplain edge allows excluded dramatic deforestation in Medieval times. Maps of the area from the last five centuries revealed direct and indirect signs of past avulsions and clearly show how the original multichannel system was transformed into a single meandering channel in the early 20th century. The extrapolated aggradation rate (net vertical accretion of floodplain fines except for levee sediments) increased from 0.2–0.3 cm/year in 700 AD to 0.3–0.4 cm/year in 2000 AD depending on the grain size of the sediment. This is the smallest yet reported enhancement of siliclastic deposition, although Morava River watershed has been intensively used for agriculture and its land cover has changed in a manner similar to west and central European rivers.  相似文献

Purpose

This work explores the application of the use of Zn, Cu, and Pb relative contents as a new type of normalization method for geochemical properties of soils and sediments in an Atlantic Basin (Anllóns River, NW Spain). The method is based on the conservative behavior of these elements, which exhibit a certain concentration ratio that remains stable as long as there are no human disturbances.

Materials and methods

The average relative contents of Zn, Cu, and Pb were calculated by dividing the concentration of each metal in soils or sediments, in the <63-μm fraction, by the sum of Zn, Cu, and Pb, expressed as a percentage. The evaluation of the sum of the average relative concentrations of Zn, Cu, and Pb (Ri), together with three standard deviations for each element, namely, Ri ± 3Si, allows a hexagon to be constructed, represented in ternary diagrams of Zn:Cu:Pb. Following the method proposed by Weng et al. (Environ Geol 45:79–85, 2003), those samples falling outside the hexagon must be considered outliers.

Results and discussion

Results obtained confimed the conservative behavior between the relative contents of Zn, Cu, and Pb in surficial samples (soils, bed, and suspended sediments). Only sediment cores displayed nonconservative behavior, showing a marked Pb enrichment, with respect to the surficial samples. When Zn, Cu, and Pb relative contents were plotted in ternary diagrams, outliers were best classified when the hexagon was drawn with standard deviations of samples from the study area. The hexagon drawn with an international database of soils and sediments showed a poorer classification of outliers.

Conclusions

The results showed that total Zn, Cu, and Pb relative contents may be employed to investigate anthropogenic disturbances of these elements in soils and sediments of the Anllóns River Basin, thus corroborating that this type of normalization may be employed as a tool to assess outliers in a contaminated area.  相似文献

Alien species can negatively affect global biodiversity, especially on islands. Significant advances in methods for eradicating mammals from islands have been achieved. In contrast, development of methods for eradicating birds from islands has lagged and few islands have had alien birds successfully eradicated. We report on a 7 year campaign to remove rock pigeons from the Galapagos Islands. To date this is the largest successful eradication of an alien bird from an island system and the only eradication of rock pigeons from an island. Multiple methods were tested and used, including alpha-chloralose, however, shooting with a high-powered air rifle was the most efficient removal technique. Incorporating the support of the community and local agencies into the campaign was critical to the success of the project.  相似文献

Biological invasions are one of the most significant global-scale problems caused by human activities. Earthworms function as ecosystem engineers in soil ecosystems because their feeding and burrowing activities fundamentally change the physical and biological characteristics of the soils they inhabit. As a result of this “engineering,” earthworm invasions can have significant effects on soil physical, chemical and biological properties. The species Amynthas agrestis (family Megascolecidae) was introduced to the United States from Asia, and has expanded its distribution range to include relatively undisturbed forests. Here, to clarify life history traits, we reared individuals under seven different conditions of food provision using litter, fragmented litter and soil, and also analyzed the stable isotope ratios of field-collected specimens to investigate their food resources in the field. Second, we examined whether prescribed fire can be used to manage invasive earthworms. We constructed eight experimental plots, each with 100 individuals of A. agrestis each, and burned half of the plots. The feeding experiment showed that the earthworms in units containing soil and some form of organic matter (litter and/or fragmented litter) produced many cocoons, indicating that litter and fragmented litter are important food resources for them. Stable isotope analyses also supported this result. During the experimental fires, average soil temperature at 5 cm depth increased by only 7.7 °C (average maximum of 32.2 °C). Litter mass was significantly reduced by the fires. Although numbers of A. agrestis and cocoons recovered from burned and unburned plots were not different, the viability of cocoons was significantly lower in burned plots. Fire may also reduce the survival rate of juveniles in the next year by depriving them of their preferred food resource. Most native earthworms in the United States live in the soil, while many invasive ones live in the litter layer and soil surface. Therefore, prescribed fire could be a viable tool for control of invasive earthworms without negatively impacting native earthworm populations.  相似文献

The Norfolk Broads and rivers of eastern England (Fig. 1) comprise an area hitherto farmed for the diversity of its wildlife and submerged aquatic plant communities. The latter have progressively disappeared since the early 1950s, until only four sites currently retain more than remnants of the original sub-aquatic macrophyte flora and its associated invertebrate fauna. Increases in turbidity of the water have been associated with the loss of macrophytes, and these increase have been variously attributed to phytoplankton and to disturbance of sediment by the many boats of visiting tourist and residents. Synoptic surveys of turbidity were carried out in the navigable waterways of Broadland in summer and winter 1973, and of phytoplankton in summer 1973. The differential distribution of phytoplankton is discussed in terms of the nutrient loadings on, and flushing coefficients of, the waterway. Highly significant correlations were obtained between phytoplankton numbers and turbidity in the system as a whole and Broads and rivers considered separately. A very weak correlation between boat activity and turbidity was shown to be non-causative. It is concluded that increase in turbidity is a function of increased nutrient loading from human activities in the catchment area and that boat disturbance does not contribute significantly to the sustained turbidity.  相似文献

This research determined whether addition of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD; 0, 0.15, or 0.25%) improved the two-stage composting of green waste (GW). The following parameters were measured during composting or in the final product: moisture content; volume; biochemical and chemical oxygen demand; humic substances; C/Nsolid and C/Nsoluble; microbial numbers (culturable bacteria, actinomycetes, and fungi); enzyme activities (pectinase and xylanase); microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen; degradation of organic components; contents of phosphorus (available and total), potassium, sodium, calcium, and magnesium; and toxicity to germinating seeds. The two-stage composting of GW was optimal with the addition of 0.15% β-CD. A mature and stable compost was obtained in only 28?days with the optimized two-stage composting rather than in the 90–270?days typically required for traditional composting.  相似文献

Abstract

Yields were evaluated three years after applied treatments to determine if responses that were not evident during earlier years eventually occurred. Potassium sulfate was applied to established, non‐irrigated, K deficient trees on fine textured soil by banding, placing in augered holes, adding to the backfilled trenches, and by injecting into the soil. Trenches were dug in the fall beside trees to break roots and ammended during backfilling with K2SO4, dolomite lime or combinations of the two. Additional trees received a heavy compost mulch in the early fall. Trenching treatments were generally detrimental. Trenching alone reduced yield and leaf Ca but increased fruit soluble solids content. Trenching plus K2SO4, trenching and lime, all soil amendments, and mushroom compost elevated leaf K from deficient or below normal to the normal range, but decreased leaf Mg. Most K application techniques eventually increased yield, but simple surface applications of K2SO4 in a narrow band were as effective as other more costly procedures. Mulching treatments appear to be as effective as K additions and produce quicker yield responses. Mushroom composts and alfalfa increased leaf N and yield in two years. Mushroom compost doubled yield even three years after a single application.  相似文献

Abstract

The lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium Ait.) is an important commercial crop of the Lac‐Saint‐Jean area (Quebec, Canada). The major blueberry fields are located on sandy soils relatively poor in available mineral nutrients. The nutrients originate from a thin organic layer found on the top of these sandy soils. The leaf mineral contents (N, P, K, Mg, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn and B) were measured in five blueberry fields during 1984 and 1985. Soil pH and soil available P, K, and Mg were also assessed. The results show that the leaf mineral contents are generally adequate. However, K and Zn might be occasionally deficient when compared to the actual established standards. The available Mg in soil was significantly correlated with the leaf Mg concentration. The data also suggest that the increase of the pH following the burn pruning seems to influence the nutrition of this species.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of determining the pseudo-total concentration of five heavy metals in the soil on which the destruction of ammunition, mines, and explosive devices is carried out by the method of open detonation. In the analyzed area, the concentrations of cadmium, lead, nickel, copper, and zinc were determined, while from the physical properties of the soil were determined the granulometric composition and the pH. The aim of the study is to determine the origin and total load on heavy metals and, based on that, to assess the dangers and impact of the site in terms of the soil pollution by heavy metals. In accordance with the regulations of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the results of the soil testing showed a significant load of copper (up to seven times) and cadmium (up to six times), and exceeding the allowed values for nickel and zinc in some places. Lead was the only metal whose concentration was within the maximum allowed and according to that the soil was classified as unpolluted. A sample of soil from the edge of the pit is the only sample in which all heavy metals, except Ni, were within the maximum allowable concentration. In regard to the concentration of the examined metals, the soil of the pit is classified as medium polluted from the aspect of copper, cadmium, and nickel and highly contaminated with zinc. The concentrations of copper and zinc in the examination area correspond to contaminated soil that represents ecological risk, which requires soil remediation.  相似文献

Purpose

The Oh?e River has received contamination from metal mining and metallurgy (mainly Cu, Pb, Sn, U, Zn) over the previous five centuries. This contamination history has been poorly documented. Contamination has entered the river system in its middle reach, where the channel is incised and bedrock confined, which impedes overbank deposition. Our objective was to locate and describe a sedimentary record in this unfavourable depositional setting.

Materials and methods

Three former channel bars that have coalesced with the riverbank were revealed by examination of historical and current maps and a digital terrain model. Manual coring in the bar and in situ (handheld) X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy provided data for developing a contamination chemostratigraphy, which was correlated with the mining history in the region. Detailed topographic examination of the bar and valley edge was important to understanding the evolution of one of the bars. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating was used to verify the timing of deposition.

Results and discussion

Handheld XRF for in situ analysis of element composition is efficient for studying contaminated sediment bodies with complex stratigraphy, which require extensive coring and stratigraphic correlation. Despite the unfavourable settings, the channel bars trapped sufficient sediment to produce a record that correlates with the history of contamination in the drainage basin. In the bar studied in greatest detail, we observed a surprising amount of contamination passing through the Oh?e River channel (up to 300 mg kg?1 of Cu, 340 mg kg?1 of Pb and 630 mg kg?1 of Sn in fine sand and silt deposits) associated with a pollution climax in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Modern contamination (Hg and U deposited in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries) was entrapped with low efficiency based on comparable concentrations of Hg and U located 90 km downstream.

Conclusions

The efficacy of the use of historical maps and detailed fieldwork was demonstrated by identification of unique depositional meso-environments, which are rare in bedrock-confined fluvial systems. The contamination chemostratigraphy of the bar deposits was correlated with the local mining and pollution history and contributed to an understanding of the bar evolution. The approach used in our study may be applicable to other montane rivers with historic ore mining and processing in their basins.
