Four groups of 16 crossbred beef calves were used in evaluating different anthelmintic treatment schedules: group 1 was given ivermectin (IVM) at weaning only (October 31) and grazed on initially safe pasture; group 2 was given IVM at weaning, on January 28, and on April 22, and grazed on contaminated pasture; and group 3 was given IVM at weaning and on April 22, and grazed on contaminated pasture; and group-4 was group treated with fenbendazole (FBZ) at weaning only, with provision for individual salvage treatment, and grazed on contaminated pasture. The investigation was from Oct 31, 1984, to Oct 9, 1985. Initially high fecal egg counts at weaning were more effectively reduced by IVM than by FBZ, and the effect of safe pasture was evident in minimal worm burdens in tracer calves grazed with group-1 cattle during November and least amount of weight loss in group-1 yearlings during winter. Fecal egg counts, pasture larval counts, and plasma pepsinogen concentrations remained low in group 2 after the January treatment. Fecal egg counts of the other groups increased substantially during late winter and spring, but pasture larval counts increased only on group-1 and group-4 pastures. During spring, highest worm burdens were found in group-1 and group-4 tracer calves (grazed in April) and in group-3 and group-4 yearlings (slaughtered in early April). Six cattle of group 4 were salvage treated with FBZ in February and April. Four groups of 18 beef calves each were used to evaluate effects of different treatments on parasite control and weight gains. The investigation extended from November 1986 (weaning) to October 1987. Group-1 calves were treated with ivermectin (200 micrograms/kg of body weight, SC) at approximately 6-week intervals for a total of 8 treatments; group-2 calves were given the same dosage of ivermectin by the same route of administration as group-1 calves in November, March, and July; group-3 calves were given fenbendazole paste (5 mg/kg, PO) at the same times as group-2 calves; and group-4 calves served as untreated controls with provision for ivermectin salvage treatment. All groups grazed on individual pairs of larval-contaminated, 1.6-ha pastures. Highest (P less than 0.05) initial worm counts in fall tracer calves were found in group 3 (Ostertagia ostertagi and Trichostrongylus axei adults) and group 4 (O ostertagi and Haemonchus adults). Fecal egg counts of group-1 calves were low throughout the experiment and pasture larval counts remained negligible after July. Egg counts and larval counts of other groups remained higher into summer. Worm counts, including O ostertagi inhibited early fourth-stage larvae (EL4), were highest (P less than 0.05) in groups-3 and -4 spring tracer calves; numbers of O ostertagi EL4 were similarly high in groups 2, 3, and 4; and T axei counts were highest (P less than 0.05) in groups-3 and -4 yearlings slaughtered in spring. Liveweights of group-1 calves were greater (P less than 0.05) than in other groups from March 2 to October, and by July 2, group-2 calves had a liveweight advantage over group-4 calves. Group-3 calves had the lowest rate of gain from March to July and mean liveweight of the group was less (P less than 0.05) than in all other groups from April to October. Only minimal worm numbers were recovered from groups-1 or -2 calves in October. Large numbers of O ostertagi and T axei were recovered from group-4 calves and O ostertagi from group-3 calves. A few calves in groups 3 and 4, but particularly in group 4, were affected by type-II disease (chronic to acute gastritis caused by maturation and emergence of previously inhibited larvae) from August to October. Final mean liveweights in descending order were 365 kg in group 1, 328 kg in group 2, 316 kg in group 4, and 281 kg in group 3.  相似文献

The tris-salt of 2-[(methoxy-carbonylamino) - [2-nitro-5-(n-propylthio) phenylimimo] methylamino] ethane sulfonic acid (MCA) was evaluated against naturally acquired gastrointestinal parasitism in cattle during spring in Louisiana to determine efficacy of the compound against inhibited early 4th-stage larvae (EL4) of Ostertagia ostertagi. Forty-three crossbred yearling beef heifers were grazed together on contaminated pastures between Mar 1 and Apr 18, 1984. On April 17, 3 of the 43 heifers were slaughtered. Analysis of worm population characteristics in the 3 cattle indicated sufficient numbers of O ostertagi EL4 and other worm genera and species in these cattle to pursue a valid evaluation of the anthelmintic efficacy of MCA. The remaining 40 heifers were removed from pasture on April 18. On April 24, they were allotted into 4 treatment groups (10/group) based on an equal distribution of body weights and on whether they were spring- or autumn-born cattle. On April 25, the cattle were treated as follows: group 1, nontreated controls; group 2, treated with MCA at 7.5 mg/kg of body weight by oral drench; group 3, treated with MCA at 15.0 mg/kg by oral drench; and group 4, treated with MCA at 20.0 mg/kg by oral drench. The cattle were then confined in drylot pens until May 7. Similar numbers of cattle from each group were killed over a 3-day period from May 8 to May 10 (13 to 15 days after treatment). The effect of previous suppressive anthelmintic treatments after weaning on parasitological parameters and weight gain of cattle was studied in the Pampeana region of Argentina. The study was carried out at two grazing fattening periods: April 1995/July 1996 and April 1997/July 1998. During both periods, 60 weaned calves that grazed contaminated pastures, were divided into three groups during the first part of the periods: GY1 group was treated every 2 weeks with doramectin while GY2 and GY3 groups remained untreated. During the second part of the periods, from October onwards GY1 and GY2 remained untreated and GY3 was treated every 2 weeks. In this second period two new groups of 20 weaning young calves were added: TG (treated every 2 weeks) and UG (untreated). Egg counts (EPG), larval cultures, pasture larval counts, serum pepsinogen (Pep) and live weight gain (LWG) were recorded monthly. Ostertagia, Cooperia, Trichostrongylus and Haemonchus were the predominant genera. Despite low levels of previous infection during the first part of the period, slight differences of EPG between GY1 (P<0.09) or UG (P<0.05) and GY2 were detected in the second part of the fattening period in 1995/1996. In 1997/1998 moderate infection levels during the first part of the period were observed. During the second part of this period, GY1 and UG showed higher (P<0.001) EPG than GY2, and only GY3 and TG had (P<0.05) lower Pep levels. Also, during the second part of 1997/1998, LWG responses of GY3 were higher (P<0.001) than those of GY1 and GY2. Live weight gain of GY2 exceeded GY1 by 10.7kg (P<0.006). Higher EPG and lower LWG of GY1 suggest that suppressive treatments negatively affected the level of resistance to infection of yearlings, but these effects were influenced by previous levels of nematode infection. The lack of differences between yearling (GY1) and calves (UG) groups suggest that, under the conditions of this study, there was no evidence that resistance to infection and the related parameters are influenced by the age.  相似文献

Four groups of 17 crossbred beef weaners were used in an experiment which extended from 14 November 1985 to 8 October 1986 (328 days). All groups began grazing on separate, contaminated pastures at a stocking rate of 5.3 cattle ha-1 and the different treatments were: Group 1, ivermectin (IVM) injectable X 1 (200 micrograms kg-1) on 14 November only, with provision for individual salvage treatment; Group 2, IVM X 3 on 14 November, 4 February and 2 July; Group 3, IVM X 2 on 14 November and 2 July; Group 4, fenbendazole (FBZ) paste X 2 (5 mg kg-1) on 14 November and 2 July. Pairs of parasite-free tracer calves were grazed on all group pastures for 1 month at the beginning of the experiment (13 November-12 December and in spring (1 April-1 May). Yearling cattle from each group were randomly selected and removed from pasture during spring (n = 2 per group, 3 April) and at the end of the experiment (n = 3 per group, 8 October) for slaughter analysis of worm population characteristics and observation of gross pathology in the abomasum and intestinal tract. At monthly intervals, all cattle were weighed and fecal egg counts, pasture larval counts and plasma pepsinogen values were determined. The results of this investigation demonstrated that three IVM treatments of weaner-yearling beef cattle during year-long grazing, were more effective than a single IVM treatment or two treatments with IVM or FBZ in the enhancement of productivity and protection from the effects of infection with nematode parasites.  相似文献

The efficacy of fenbendazole (Panacur, Hoechst-Roussel) against inhibited early fourth-stage larvae of Ostertagia ostertagi and other nematodes of the abomasum and intestinal tract was investigated in naturally infected, yearling cattle in April 1978. The time when peak levels of inhibited larvae occurred was determined by epizootiologic study which began in November 1977. All animals were removed from pasture and maintained free from further helminth infection until slaughter (19 to 21 days). The fenbendazole liquid suspension was administered as an oral drench at dose level of 10 mg/kg to 10 animals and then at dose level of 15 mg/kg to an additional 10 animals at 10 days after removal from pasture. Eleven animals were maintained as untreated controls. In cattle given the dose of 10 mg/kg, the following reductions were observed: O ostertagi adults--100%, developing stages--80%, and inhibited larvae--97%; other worm genera in the abomasum and nematodes of the intestinal tract--100%. In the cattle given the larger dose, the following reductions were observed: O ostertagi adults--100%, developing stages--98%, and inhibited larvae--99%; other worm genera in the abomasum and nematodes of the intestinal tract--100%.  相似文献

Two different deworming strategies based on the use of moxidectin, a broad spectrum endectocide with persistency against Ostertagia ostertagi, were evaluated in grazing dairy heifers. Eighty-four heifers unexposed to parasitic infection were randomly allocated to 3 different groups: untreated (Group 1), treated at 3 and 10 weeks after turnout with 0.5 mg/kg/body weight (BW) of topical moxidectin (Group 2), or treated at turnout and 10 weeks later with 0.5 mg/kg/BW of topical moxidectin (Group 3). The heifers were turned out on June 6 (Day 0) to a naturally contaminated pasture divided into 3 sections by an electrical fence. Each group of heifers was put on a different section of pasture. The trial ended when they were housed on October 29 (Day 143). The results of this experiment confirmed the beneficial effect of 2 strategic treatments with moxidectin pour-on under field conditions in Quebec. The parasitological parameters showed a statistical difference in terms of mean fecal egg counts between treated and control groups (ANOVA, P < or = 0.006). After turnout, pasture larval counts were consistently higher for Group 1 compared with counts for Group 2 or 3. All heifer groups gained weight during the trial period, but the weight gain profile of both treated groups was significantly higher than that of the untreated controls (ANOVA, P < 0.03). During the trial period, Group 2 and Group 3 gained 77.7 kg BW and 73.2 kg BW, respectively, while Group 1 gained only 57.9 kg BW, despite the fact that heifers of Group 1 received a greater quantity of supplementary feed while on pasture.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to compare the anthelmintic efficacy of albendazole (ABZ), levamisole (LEV) and fenbendazole (FBZ) against inhibited early fourth stage larvae (EL4) of Ostertagia ostertagi during April in Louisiana. Forty cross-bred beef heifers (average weight 165 kg) were acquired during winter and grazed on pastures contaminated with O. ostertagi and other nematodes until early April. The cattle were weighed and randomly allotted into four groups of ten animals on 6 April and treatments were administered on 7 April. Experimental groupings were: Group 1, non-treated controls; Group 2, ABZ by oral drench at 10 mg kg-1; Group 3, LEV by topical, pour-on administration to back midline at 10 mg kg-1; Group 4, FBZ by oral drench at 10 mg kg-1. Equal numbers of cattle from each group were slaughtered daily between 10 and 13 days after treatment. Mean numbers of O. ostertagi developmental stages present in untreated controls were: adults, 13,714; developing L4 (DL4), 6487; inhibited EL4, 21,719. The mean percentage of inhibited EL4 was 51.8. Smaller numbers of Haemonchus placei, Trichostrongylus axei and Cooperia spp. were recovered uniformly in control cattle. Percentage reduction values for the three compounds against O. ostertagi adults, DL4 and EL4, respectively, were: ABZ, 99.0, 95.3, 84.9; LEV, 1.0, 21.8, 32.1; FBZ, 99.2, 97.2, 97.5. Differences between ABZ and LEV EL4 counts were not significant, but in all other cases worm counts in ABZ and FBZ-treated cattle were significantly lower (P less than or equal to 0.05) than in LEV-treated and control cattle. Both ABZ and FBZ were 98-100% effective against Haemonchus adults and L4, T. axei adults, and Cooperia spp. adults and L4. LEV was 100% effective against Haemonchus adults and L4, 85.6% against T. axei, and 94.6% and 89.59% effective against Cooperia spp. adults and L4, respectively.  相似文献

Gastrointestinal parasitism has been recognized by practitioners as the most common disease in beef cattle, mainly in weaning calves and fattening steers. Among the different genera, Ostertagia ostertagi is the predominant parasite in the temperate climate, in which the major beef and dairy cattle area of South America is situated. Outbreaks of Type I ostertagiasis are usually seen after weaning time (autumn-winter) when larvae counts are high and food availability is low. The development of the disease is rapidly established and 15-30 kg are lost in 30-50 days. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated a fast evolution of parasite eggs to larvae (L3) in summer (1 week or less), evolution being 30-45 days during winter. Inhibition O. ostertagi occurs during spring (September-December) and development resumes in late summer and early autumn. The production effect is seen as a significant reduction in body weight gain and occasionally clinical Type II ostertagiasis appears. A similar epidemiological pattern of inhibition of Ostertagia sp. has been recorded in Uruguay and temperate areas in southern Brazil.  相似文献

Strategic application of an anthelmintic was tested during the 1982 grazing season as part of the continued study of the epidemiology of beef cattle parasitism in central Missouri. Forty Hereford and Hereford X Simmental cow/calf pairs were assigned to 2 treatment groups. The 20 cow/calf pairs in group 1 were nonmedicated controls. After calving in mid-March, the 20 cows in group 2 were drenched with a 10% suspension of the anthelmintic fenbendazole (10 mg/kg of body weight). Ten cow/calf pairs were placed on each of four 20-acre fescue or orchard grass pastures in mid-May. Cows and calves in treatment group 2 were drenched with the 10% fenbendazole suspension (5 mg/kg) in mid-July. Body weights and fecal specimens were obtained monthly. Nematode egg counts in cow and calf fecal specimens collected monthly were significantly (P less than 0.05) lower in treatment group 2 than in treatment group 1. Numbers of larvae cultured for speciation revealed that Ostertagia ostertagi was the predominant nematode species. Developmental arrest of O ostertagi was found to be significantly (P less than 0.05) greater than zero from mid-May to mid-July. An important significant difference (P less than 0.01) was shown in body weights of calves, with the calves in treatment group 2 having a higher mean weight gain of 22.5 kg in adjusted 205-day weaning weights, and a higher mean daily gain of 0.11 kg. Weight maintenance of cows was not affected significantly by anthelmintic treatment. To test the effect of a parasite control program for cattle, 2 groups of similar composition were grazed on separate, but equivalent, improved pastures. Cattle in 1 group were treated with fenbendazole at 5.0 mg/kg of body weight at the time they were turned out on pasture in the spring and again at midsummer, when the cattle were moved to a new pasture. The control group was not treated. Parasite egg counts were significantly (P less than 0.04) lower in the treated group. Trichostrongyle-type eggs were the most prevalent throughout the year, except in the month of May, when Strongyloides papillosus eggs were predominant. The number of worms recovered from tracer calves was lower for those on pastures where the treated group grazed than for those on the control group's pasture. The most consistently recovered parasite was Ostertagia ostertagi, and hypobiosis was observed.  相似文献

Two groups of yearling cattle which had been treated with ivermectin either three and eight, or three, eight and 13 weeks after turn out to trichostrongyle contaminated pasture in their first grazing season were exposed in the following season to natural challenge with helminth parasites. To assess their immunity to this challenge each group shared a pasture with parasite naive first season calves. No anthelmintic treatments were administered at any time during the year. Throughout the grazing period the yearlings showed normal respiratory rates, negative faecal lungworm larval counts, and, relative to the calves, low faecal trichostrongyle egg counts. All the first season calves developed patent lungworm infections and on one occasion the mean respiratory rates of each group of calves were significantly greater than those of the yearling cattle. At the end of the grazing period, from early May until late September or October 1986, the cattle were removed from pasture and together with parasite naive controls challenged with either 10 or 22 third stage larvae of Dictyocaulus viviparus/kg bodyweight and necropsied between 18 and 23 days later. Although the experimental challenge resulted in relatively heavy lungworm infection of the naive controls, none of the yearlings and only three of the 11 calves which had been at pasture were found to be infected. However, large numbers of arrested fourth stage larvae of Ostertagia ostertagi were present in all the naturally infected yearlings and calves.  相似文献

The epidemiology of nematode infection was studied in fattening grazing cattle from weaning (April 1994) to market at the end of their second autumn (July 1995). Sixty Aberdeen Angus calves of seven months of age were randomly allocated by weight to two groups: GT, treated every three weeks with doramectin (200 mcg/kg); and GI, an infected group, only treated with fenbendazole (7.5 mg/kg) at weaning and on the 1st of October. The two groups were grazed together on contaminated lucerne pastures until July, on 'clean' oat pastures until October and again on contaminated lucerne until the end of the trial. Fecal egg counts (epg), herbage larvae (L3), serum pepsinogen (Pep) and blood eosinophils (Eo) were evaluated monthly. Eight steers were slaughtered for worm recovery, three in July 1994, three in December 1994 and two in July 1995. Grazing feed intake was estimated by fecal output (chromic oxide method)/l-diet digestibility and to measure non-specific response, Brucella antibodies were detected at 11 and 40 days post-vaccination in early winter. Fecal egg counts, Pep and Eo of GI increased (P<0.01) from April to July when there was a moderate-to-high level of infection. Ostertagia, Trichostrongylus and Cooperia were the predominant genera. By late winter, all parameters decreased on oat 'clean' pastures and increased again when cattle returned to moderately infected lucerne. During summer, the parameters measured reflected the negligible numbers of L3 on pastures until early autumn. At this time, increased numbers of L3 were followed by a moderate rise (P<0.01) of epg, Pep and Eo values. During winter, GT showed higher (P<0.04) Brucella antibody IgG titers while feed intake of GI was 24.9% depressed (P<0.02). There were total cumulative weight-gain (WG) differences (P<0.001) between groups (GT=263.1 kg; GI=214.3 kg). During the second autumn, the mean WG of GT steers was 16.6 kg greater (P<0.04) than that of GI. Vaccination titres against Brucella suggested non-specific depression of immunity, while higher Pep and Eo levels in second-year steers may have reflected hypersensitivity reactions.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to determine the dynamics of infestation of cattle and pasture by gastrointestinal nematodes in a mild humid environment in northwestern Spain. For this, infestation of pasture by free-living stages (L3), dynamics of faecal egg output, blood pepsinogen levels and worm burden in slaughtered animals were quantified. The results showed a high degree of annual variability, which was dependent on weather conditions. The seasons were clearly defined in the study area, with mild humid winters and relatively dry summers registered throughout the years of the study. Infestation of pasture by larvae varied from year to year, peaking during August in the first year, between August and December in the second year, and during October in the third year. The annual variation was mainly due to weather conditions, particularly the amount of rain in summer. The patterns of faecal egg output were similar in the first and third grazing seasons, with maximum levels observed in May/June; however, in the second year, the peak was reached in October. Blood pepsinogen levels increased from pasture turnout (March/April) until the end of the grazing season (November/December), reaching maximum values from August/September onwards. The nematode parasite species identified at necropsy were Ostertagia osteragi, O. lyrata, Cooperia oncophora, C. macmasteri, C. punctata and Trichuris ovis, with O. ostertagi and C. oncophora predominating. In faecal cultures, the following genera were also identified: Haemonchus, Trichostrongylus, Nematodirus, Bunostomum, Oesophagostomum and Strongyloides. There was a significant correlation (r=0.97, P<0.01) between worm burden (Ostertagia spp.) and pasture infestation (Ostertagia L3) 3 weeks prior to slaughter of the calves, and also between blood pepsinogen levels and pasture infestation by Ostertagia L3 (r=0.33, P<0.02). Correlations between worm burden and faecal egg output and between blood pepsinogen level and faecal egg output were not significant. The results obtained in the present study confirm that there is annual variability in the time-course of nematodosis in cattle, and demonstrate the importance of weather, particularly summer rainfall, in an Atlantic temperate environment.  相似文献

The efficacy of febantel at a dosage of 5 mg/kg (45.5% paste formulation) against inhibited early 4th-stage larvae (EL4) of Ostertagia ostertagi, other nematodes of the abomasum, and Dictyocaulus viviparus was investigated in 4- to 6-month-old Holstein calves that grazed on pasture heavily contaminated with parasites from February 24 to April 1, 1986 (36 days). In Louisiana, this is the first month of a 3-month period in which increasing numbers of inhibition-prone O ostertagi larvae are acquired, and infection risk with D viviparus may remain high. Three of 4 calves that died of lungworm infection during the pasture-exposure period were necropsied. Large numbers of abomasal nematodes, including inhibited O ostertagi larvae, and large numbers of D viviparus were recovered. Twenty-five calves were randomly allotted by equal distribution of body weight to 2 groups and treated on April 4: placebo-treated calves (n = 13) and febantel-treated calves (n = 12). Equal numbers of treated and control calves were killed at 6 and 7 days, respectively, after treatment. Mean numbers of O ostertagi in control cattle were: adults, 4,931; developing 4th-stage larvae (DL4), 1,119; and inhibited EL4, 3,410. Ostertagia lyrata, Trichostrongylus axei, Haemonchus sp, and D viviparus were well distributed in nearly all control calves. Percentage reduction of O ostertagi in treated calves, when compared with controls, was: adults, 83.6%; DL4, 57.8%; and inhibited EL4, 34.8%. This study was carried out to examine the survival of infective Ostertagia ostertagi larvae (L(3)) on pasture under different simulated conditions of grazing, i.e. mixed grazing of cattle and nose-ringed sows, or grazing by cattle alone. Standardised pats of cattle faeces containing O. ostertagi eggs were deposited on three types of herbage plots, which were divided into zone 1: faecal pat; zone 2: a circle extending 25cm from the edge of the faecal pat; zone 3: a circle extending 25cm from the edge of zone 2. For "tall herbage" (TH) plots, the herbage in zone 2 was allowed to grow naturally, while the herbage in zone 3 was cut down to 5-7cm fortnightly, imitating a cattle-only pasture. For "short herbage" (SH) plots, the herbage in both zones 2 and 3 were cut down to 5-7cm fortnightly, imitating mixed grazing of cattle and sows. The grass in the "short herbage and scattered faeces" (SH/SF) plots were cut as for SH plots, and the faeces were broken down 3 weeks after deposition and scattered within zone 2, imitating the rooting behaviour of co-grazing sows. Five faecal pats from each plot group were collected on monthly basis, along with the herbage from zones 2 and 3 cut down to the ground. Infective larvae were then recovered from both faeces and herbage. The numbers of L(3) recovered from zone 1 were higher in the TH plots than in the other two groups and, furthermore, the larval counts from SH plots were always higher than from SH/SF plots. The three groups followed a similar pattern during the season regarding numbers of L(3) in zone 2, and no clear patterns between plot types were obtained. The presence of L(3) in zone 3 was almost negligible. Important differences were seen throughout the study from the biological point of view; more L(3) were able to survive in faeces on the TH plots, presumably reflecting a better protection from heat and desiccation compared to those in the other plots. The overall results support the idea that mixed grazing of cattle and pigs favour the reduction of O. ostertagi larval levels in pasture. This reduction is mainly due to the grazing behaviour of pigs, which by grazing up to the very edge of the cattle faeces, will either expose the larvae in faeces to adverse environmental summer conditions or ingest cattle parasite larvae, or both.  相似文献

The efficacy of ivermectin against inhibited early 4th-stage larvae of ostertagia ostertagi and other nematodes of the abomasum and intestinal tract was determined in naturally infected yearling beef cattle. The time when large numbers of inhibited larvae were acquired was determined by monthly slaughter of monitor cattle, beginning in January. In April, 12 animals were removed from pasture and maintained free of further helminth exposure until slaughter (21 days). At 9 days after the cattle were removed from pasture, ivermectin was administered to the principals by subcutaneous injection (200 micrograms/kg); the other 6 animals were given subcutaneous injections of the ivermectin vehicle. both groups were klled and necropsied at 12 days after treatment. Mean numbers of O ostertagi in the 6 controls were: adults, 41,906; developing 4th stage, 73,813; and early 4th stage, 334,965. The mean proportion of early 4th-stage larvae was 73.7%. In the 6 principals (treated with ivermectin), the following reductions were observed: O ostertagi adults, 100%; developing 4th stage, 99.8%; and early 4th stage, 99,9%. Small numbers of dead and degenerated O ostertagi of all developmental stages were recovered from abomasal washings before fixation; few viable worms were recovered.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of subclinical, naturally acquired gastrointestinal nematode infestation on weight gain in yearling cattle kept on pasture. DESIGN: Prospective study. ANIMALS: 799 Bos taurus yearlings kept on pasture with 2,805 herd mates in eastern and central South Dakota. PROCEDURE: 11 trials were initiated at 9 sites from 1999 through 2001. For each trial, approximately 10% of cattle in each site's pasture group were identified, weighed, and administered a bolus of ivermectin (sustained-release formulation) prior to turnout. A similar subgroup of nontreated control cattle was identified and weighed prior to turnout. For each trial, treated and control groups remained with the larger pasture group throughout the entire grazing season. At the end of the grazing season, weight measurements and fecal samples were obtained from all treated and control cattle; average daily grazing gain was calculated and compared between these 2 groups. RESULTS: Treatment of grazing cattle with ivermectin increased average daily gain by 0.0459 +/- 0.01 kg/head/d (mean +/- SEM; 0.1 +/- 0.02 lb/head/d), compared with that achieved in control cattle. Control cattle had significantly greater fecal egg counts at grazing season end than treated cattle. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Compared with anthelmintic-treated cattle, yearling cattle with naturally occurring gastrointestinal nematode infestations kept on pasture in the US Northern Plains had a decreased average daily gain equivalent to 6.6 kg (14.5 lb) less gain in a 143-day grazing season. Strategies for control of nematode populations in pastures should be considered to ameliorate this production loss.  相似文献

A study was conducted to determine the therapeutic efficacy of 1% doramectin injected subcutaneously at 200 microg/kg into cattle harbouring naturally acquired infections of inhibited Ostertagia ostertagi larvae. Sixteen yearling Friesian bulls, grazed without anthelmintic treatment throughout the autumn-winter, were selected on the basis of similar body weights and serum pepsinogen activities. After removal from pasture on day -23 they were weighed and randomly assigned to two treatment groups on the basis of this weight. On day 0, one group was given saline (1 ml/50 kg) while the second was treated with doramectin (200 microg/kg). Both treatments were given by subcutaneous injection. All stock were slaughtered 14-15 days after treatment. Moderate to high levels of adult O. ostertagi and Trichostrongylus axei and early and late 4th larval stages of O. ostertagi were recovered from saline-treated calves at necropsy. Doramectin was highly effective in eliminating all stages of O. ostertagi (99.9%; p<0.0001) and T. axei (100%; p<0.0001). No evidence of lesions were detected at the injection sites at necropsy. These results confirm that doramectin is an extremely effective broad-spectrum avermectin anthelmintic with efficacy against inhibited as well as maturing larval and adult forms of O. ostertagi.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of a single pasture, limited treatment methodology to assess the impact of gastrointestinal nematodes on weight gain in grazing cattle. From a group of 450 British crossbred, yearling spayed heifers, 60 animals were randomly selected (prospective randomization) prior to placement on summer pasture. Each of these 60 animals was weighed, a fecal sample obtained for nematode egg count and a uniquely numbered ear tag applied. A randomly assigned group of 30 received treatment with one ivermectin sustained release bolus, while the remaining 30 served as non-treated controls. The treatment and control groups rejoined the remaining non-treated 390 animals, and were grazed as a single group for 165 days. At grazing conclusion, treatment and control cattle were individually weighed, and fecal samples obtained for nematode egg counts. Treatment was associated with a 0.064 kg per grazing day gain increase, or a 10 kg increase over the grazing season (P = 0.02). Nematode egg counts at grazing initiation were not different between treatment and control (P = 0.30), though egg counts in treated cattle at study end were lower than control (P < 0.0001). Results of this study support the use of a single pasture limited treatment approach for measuring the effect that internal nematodes have on weight gain in grazing cattle under commercial range conditions.  相似文献
