Parasites of the stomach in donkeys of the highveld of Zimbabwe   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Fourteen donkeys from a communal area of the Zimbabwean highveld were examined for stomach parasites during July and November of 1986 and January and April of 1987. All 14 animals were infected. Habronema muscae occurred in 12, Draschia megastoma in 11, H. majus in 9, Trichostrongylus axei in 9, Gasterophilus intestinalis in 14 and G. nasalis in 1 donkey. The lowest level of infection was in January for the helminths and in April for Gasterophilus larvae. The peak burdens of parasites were in July for Habronema spp. and in November for D. megastoma and Gasterophilus larvae. Infections with spirurid worms and Gasterophilus develop mainly from the middle of the rainy season to the beginning of the dry season (January to May/June). G. intestinalis seems to have an annual cycle.  相似文献

The epidemiology and control of helminth infections in the horse were studied in four small grazing experiments between 1981 and 1984 at the University of Utrecht. At autopsy in November or December negligible Strongylus vulgaris burdens were found in the cranial mesenteric artery of four groups of ponies, which had been treated with an anthelmintic in July and subsequently transferred to a clean pasture. Considerable arterial S. vulgaris burdens were seen in three groups of ponies which were treated with an anthelmintic in July without a move to clean pasture, and in another group of ponies in 1984, which was set stocked on a pasture used for horses in 1983 and which was treated with an anthelmintic (albendazole) 2 days before turnout in April and subsequently in May, June and July. A tracer pony, grazed with this group between the middle of September and the middle of November, harboured an even higher burden of arterial S. vulgaris larvae. The arterial S. vulgaris in the latter group could not be the result of contamination of the pasture with S. vulgaris eggs before July, as in the three other groups with considerable arterial S. vulgaris burdens. Pasture larval counts showed that S. vulgaris larvae do not only overwinter, but are able to survive in considerable numbers until autumn, longer than most other gastrointestinal nematodes. There were some indications that translation of infective larvae, which overwintered on pasture in some free living stage, occurred between May and July.  相似文献

A total of 89 Thoroughbreds, 14 to 333 days old (born in 1982), were examined at necropsy for certain internal parasites during a 1-year-period, Mar 1, 1982, to Feb 28, 1983. The eyes of 73 of the horses and the cranial mesenteric arteries of 71 were examined. Specific interest was on prevalence of parasites according to month of the year and age of the horses at necropsy. Parasites recovered (first month-last month infected horse found) were as follows: Thelazia lacrymalis (eyes) immature and mature (June - February); Habronema/Draschia (lungs) immature (May - September); Habronema muscae (stomach) immature (July - February) and mature (September - February); Draschia megastoma (stomach) immature (August - December), mature (August - February), and lesions (September - February); Gasterophilus intestinalis (stomach) 2nd instars (July - February) and 3rd instars (August - February); Gasterophilus nasalis (stomach) 2nd instars (August - November) and 3rd instars (August - February); Parascaris equorum (lungs) immature (March - November), P equorum (small intestine) immature (March - February), and mature (July - February); Strongyloides westeri (small intestine) mature (March - September); Anoplocephala perfoliata (cecum) immature and mature (August - February); Strongylus vulgaris (cranial mesenteric artery) immature and mature (May - February). Other parasites recovered, but only from 1 or 2 horses each (months found in infected horses) were: Thelazia skrjabini (eyes) (October), Dictyocaulus arnfieldi (lungs) (January); Trichostrongylus axei (stomach) (October); Anoplocephala magna (small intestine) (October, November); S vulgaris (cecum) (November); Strongylus edentatus (cecum) (January); Setaria spp (abdominal cavity) (January). Influence of probable chemotherapy of the horses on prevalence of the parasites is discussed.  相似文献

The anterior mesenteric artery and its main branches, collected regularly from donkeys throughout a year, were examined for Strongylus vulgaris larvae. The mean monthly percentage of arteries infected varied from 61.5 to 100, with an overall mean of 90.5. The mean monthly number of larvae varied from 3 in January to 104 in April, with the annual mean of 32.6. A clear seasonal pattern occured in the worm burden and the age structure of larvae. The number of larvae was least in December–January, but rose gradually thereafter to reach a peak in April–May. A steep decline in June–July was followed by a progressive diminution until January. During summer and early autumn, the proportion of fifth-stage larvae was high. These observations indicate that S. vulgaris is an annual species in Morocco, infection occurring in late autumn and winter, development being completed in spring and summer, and sexually mature adults occuring in the gut mainly in summer and autumn.  相似文献

SUMMARY The anterior mesenteric arteries of 138 horses slaughtered in southern Queensland were examined for the presence of S. vulgaris larvae. Seasonal differences were noted in the size of arterial populations of this parasite, with higher mean monthly numbers of worms per horse occurring in winter. There was an equally high incidence of severe verminous arteritis during the winter months of June, July and August, compared to arteries examined during the warmer months, when there were smaller numbers of larvae. It was concluded that more infective larvae were available on pasture during the warmer months, with subsequently large arterial populations some 3 to 4 months later. The parasite was encountered in 121 arteries (88%). The prevalence of adult helminths in the caeca of the same group of horses was S. vulgaris 88%; S. equinus 70%; S. edentatus 18%; Triodontophorus spp. 23%; A. perfoliata 62%. The overall prevalence of S. vulgaris was 93%, when the results of arterial and caecal observations were combined.  相似文献

Eighteen pony foals were experimentally infected with 500 third stage larvae of Strongylus vulgaris at 2 weeks, and at 2, 4, 6 and 8 months after birth. For the duration of the study, all foals were kept in the same pasture with their mothers to allow natural infection with other parasites by exposure to a contaminated environment. Twelve of the foals were utilized in groups of 3 and treated orally five times at two month intervals starting at one month of age with closantel at doses of 5, 10, 20 or 40 mg kg-1. Ten months after birth the foals were necropsied to determine the parasitic burdens in the gastrointestinal tracts and the cranial mesenteric arteries. The results indicate a high antiparasitic activity of closantel against larval stages of Gasterophilus intestinalis and S. vulgaris, as well as against adult S. vulgaris, S. edentatus, Anoplocephala perfoliata and Triodontophorus spp., when used at doses of 20 or 40 mg kg-1.  相似文献

During a 24 month period, 198 donkeys were examined for Gasterophilus intestinalis and Gasterophilus nasalis larvae. Gasterophilus intestinalis was found in 97.5% and G. nasalis in 95.5% of donkeys. The third instars (L3) of both species occurred during all months of the year and so did the second instars (L2), except in April (G. nasalis) and May (G. intestinalis). Over 75% of the animals had up to 200 larvae and 1.5% had over 600 larvae. The maximum number of both L2 and L3 larvae found in any animal was 418 G. intestinalis, 433 G. nasalis and 715 of both species combined. The seasonal variation in the numbers and development status of larvae indicated that the period of greatest activity of adult flies of G. intestinalis was from August/September to November, and that of G. nasalis from May to September. Consequently, the L2 larvae in the stomachs were in peak numbers between November and January for G. intestinalis and between July and September for G. nasalis. The L3 larvae of G. intestinalis had peak numbers between December and July, and those of G. nasalis between October and March. During January-March, most of the L2 larvae of G. nasalis were trapped in polypous nodules near the pyloric end of the stomach. It is concluded that the high-risk period for infection is during late spring and autumn, leading to the heavy larval burden of Gasterophilus in the stomach of donkeys during winter.  相似文献

Throughout a period of 13 months, the abomasa of 1024 sheep, living in a sahelian region, were examined for adult Haemonchus contortus and their inhibited L4 larvae. Of these 796 (78%) were found harbouring H. contortus, but with low worm burdens (geometric mean 37). Significant numbers of inhibited larvae appeared early in the dry season (November) and they represented 49% of the total in December. A similar proportion of inhibited larvae were present until April and after that their number declined abruptly. It was concluded that Haemonchus sp. survives the dry season as hypobiotic larvae as well as adults.  相似文献

A total of 96 abomasa from sheep and goats at the Zagazig abattoir, Sharkia Province, Egypt, were examined, during the four climatic seasons from April 1986 to March 1987, for the presence of adult and larval nematodes. Adults of Trichostrongylus axei were most numerous followed by adult Haemonchus contortus. Adult Ostertagia sp. and Parabronema skrjabini were less prevalent. There was no significant difference between sheep and goats in infection rates, but worm burdens of the nematodes other than Ostertagia sp. were significantly higher (P less than 0.05) in sheep than in goats. The animals were uniformly infected with these parasites throughout the year as there were no significant differences in the incidence or intensity of infections between the four seasons. The numbers of larvae recovered from the wall of the abomasa were small in relation to the total adult worm population throughout the year with a slight increase during the summer. Hypobiosis, therefore, seems not to be important in the life cycle of abomasal nematodes of sheep and goats in Sharkia Province, Egypt.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine certain aspects of the biology of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) decoloratus larvae under laboratory and field conditions. Larvae allowed 48 h to select a vertical questing substrate preferred 90 cm rods in length to those of 60 or 30 cm, while in a separate experiment migration from rods 5 cm or 25 cm in length to rods 45 cm in length continued between 48 h and 72 h after larval release. Hatching of the larval progeny of engorged female ticks exposed to ambient field temperatures during the period June to August, occurred synchronously during the third or fourth week of November. With a single exception, larvae that hatched during November and between April and July survived for 38 days or longer, while those that hatched from December to March survived for 31 days or less. Questing larvae were present on vegetation throughout the year, with most being recovered during January and February. Parasitic larvae were present on cattle from October to May with most being collected during January and February.  相似文献

Four controlled tests (experiments A, B, C, and D) were conducted in naturally infected yearling equids to evaluate activity of ivermectin (0.2 mg/kg IM) against migrating Strongylus vulgaris and S edentatus in mesenteric arteries and ventral abdominal wall, respectively. Data were also obtained on activity against other internal parasites of the gastrointestinal tract and eyeworms. The type and number of equids in the experiments were as follows: experiment A-3 ponies, 2 treated and 1 non-treated; experiment B-4 mixed-bred horses, 2 treated and 2 nontreated; experiment C-5 mixed-bred horses, 3 treated and 2 nontreated; experiment D-4 mixed-bred horses, 2 treated and 2 nontreated. Intervals between treatment and necropsy were 35 days in experiment A, 52 to 53 days in experiment B, 38 to 41 days in experiment C, and 45 days in experiment D. Efficacious killing of retroperitoneal forms of S edentatus in the ventral abdominal wall was obtained in the 4 experiments. Only dead worms or fragments were recovered from treated animals, while living 4th-stage and/or 5th-stage S edentatus was present in nontreated equids in each test. A similar killing effect on S vulgaris in cranial mesenteric arteries was recorded in 2 experiments (B and D); only 1 dead 5th-stage worm was found in 1 of the treated yearlings in experiment B, whereas living 4th- and 5th-stages of S vulgaris were found in the nontreated controls in both experiments.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

In a controlled trial in naturally-infected young ponies, oxfendazole administered orally at dose-rates of 10 mg per kg and 50 mg per kg resulted in complete elimination of Trichostrongylus axei, Parascaris equorum, Oxyuris equi and adult Strongylus vulgaris. Also, all migrating Strongylus edentatus larvae recovered from the subperitoneal tissues of the flank were found to be dead. Minimum efficiencies of 99.8 per cent and 99.1 per cent were obtained against adult small strongyles (Trichonema spp) and 97.6 per cent and 100 per cent of developing small strongyle larvae at dose-rates of 10 mg per kg and 50 mg per kg respectively. Although the arterial lesions caused by migrating S vulgaris larvae were less severe in the treated compared with the untreated animals, reductions in mean larval numbers over controls were only in the region of 49 to 59 per cent.  相似文献

During a period of 13 months, 507 heads of sheep, obtained from an abattoir near Harare, were examined for infection with Oestrus ovis larvae. The prevalence of infection varied from 6 to 52%, the highest being in November and the lowest in April. The mean annual larval burden was 1.12. The maximum number of larvae recovered from a single head was 57 in the month of November. Two larval peaks were observed, the first and highest in November and the second in August/September. Some flies are present throughout the year, except in May. There are at least 3 generations of flies per year. The wet summer period from January to May seems to be unfavourable, as very few flies are present. There is no overwintering of first instar larvae in the heads of sheep.  相似文献

The morantel sustained release bolus was administered at turnout to first-season grazing calves in order to assess its efficacy in the seasonal control of infection by nematode parasites in Ireland. The pastures grazed by control calves showed a marked increase in gastrointestinal trichostrongylid infective larvae by September, while numbers of infective larvae on pasture grazed by bolus-treated calves remained at a low level throughout the grazing season. In consequence, the controls showed significantly higher worm egg counts in late season and significantly higher worm burdens (mainly Ostertagia spp) at necropsy carried out in November on representative number of principal animals selected from each group. These reduced worm burdens were attributed to the suppression of egg output during the early part of the season as a result of treatment with the morantel sustained release bolus at turnout in the spring. Pasture contamination with Dictyocaulus viviparus larvae was present on all treatment pastures. The bolus-treated calves however were subjected to an increase in D. viviparus infection which occurred on their pasture in late season after the active life of the bolus had expired. It was concluded that bolus treatment delayed (rather than prevented) the buildup of D. viviparus infection on the pasture by 60-90 days.  相似文献

A post-mortem survey was carried out on 46 Sardinian horses to evaluate the presence of Strongylus vulgaris and associated pathology. Horses were from local farms and had been treated with broad-spectrum anthelmintics at least 3 times a year. Examination of the cranial mesenteric arterial system (CMAS) showed parasite-induced lesions in all horses. S. vulgaris larvae were found in 39% of examined arteries, while their detection rate in coprocultures was 4%. Histology, carried out on 26 horses, showed mainly chronic and chronic-active lesions. Histometry showed a significant increase in thickness of the arterial wall, in particular of the intima tunic and adventitia tunic of the ileocolic artery and its colic branch. MCV, MCHC and alpha2, beta and gamma globulins were increased in horses with S. vulgaris larvae in the arteries, while the albumin/globulin ratio was decreased. Horses that were positive on faecal examination showed decreased values for RBC, PCV and the albumin/globulin ratio. Although several studies have shown a dramatic decrease of S. vulgaris infection worldwide, our data show that this parasite continues to exert its pathogenic role, even when its detection rate is quite low within the strongyle population infecting horses.  相似文献

Two controlled tests were conducted in equine foals and yearlings to determine the optimal oral dosage and the duration of activity of closantel for the prevention of Gasterophilus spp larval infections. Additional data were collected on the activity of closantel against Strongylus vulgaris larval infections. In experiment 1, 12 foals and 12 yearlings were equally allocated to 4 experimental groups, and were given oral treatments with closantel at dosages of 0 (nontreated controls), 2, 5, or 8 mg/kg of body weight every 2 months during bot season. The foals and yearlings were allowed to graze on open pasture throughout the experiment to provide a natural source for bot and helminth infections. All animals were euthanatized and necropsied 6 weeks after the final treatment. Closantel was highly effective (98.6% to 100%) at all doses in preventing Gasterophilus spp larval infections in the foals, but only the 8 mg/kg dose had significant (P less than 0.05) activity (99.7%) in the yearlings. This dose also significantly reduced the numbers of 4th-stage and immature adult S vulgaris (86.0%) in the mesenteric arteries as compared with nontreated controls. In experiment 2, 9 foals and 9 yearlings received a single oral treatment of 8 mg of closantel/kg of body weight; 3 foals and 3 yearlings were kept as nontreated controls. Groups of 6 treated (3 foals, 3 yearlings) and 2 control (1 foal, 1 yearling) animals were euthanatized and necropsied 1, 2, and 3 months after treatment. Closantel remained effective for 2 months in preventing infections of G intestinalis larvae in these foals and yearlings. Clinical signs of toxicosis were not observed in the treated animals of either study.  相似文献

Infestation was present in 65% of the heads and the mean larval burden per positive case over the year was 24.8. The monthly prevalence rate varied from 44% in April to 88.2% in November. There are usually three generations of Ovis each year: the first March–April, the second in June–July and the last in September–October. There was no fly activity in winter and during the hottest months of summer. On the other hand, nearly all the larvae overwintered as the firs stage.

This study emphasizes the seriousness of the problem in the region and the authors recommend three strategic treatments per year during periods of high fly activity.  相似文献
