Details of the morphology of the forestomach of the Japanese serow (Capricornis crispus) were examined macroscopically, and by light and scanning electron microscopy. The rumen was sac-like in shape, and the right accessory longitudinal groove was not visible externally. The reticulum was relatively small, while the omasum was oval and large. Inside the rumen, even in the dorsal sac, the ruminal papillae were densely distributed, although absent on the pillars. The caudodorsal coronary pillar was indistinct. In the ruminoreticular fold, ruminal papillae were observed even on the reticulum side. In the reticulum, the primary reticular fold was apparent and the ill-defined secondary folds were also detected in some reticular cells. In the omasum, the omasal laminae of four sizes were recognized. The fourth order of laminae was occasionally absent. Histological sections of ruminal papillae revealed that softly keratinized epithelium covered the entire ruminal mucosa. In the reticulum, soft keratinized epithelium was observed throughout, with the exception of the tips of reticular papillae on which the epithelium showed evidence of hard keratinization. The epithelium of the omasal laminae was moderately keratinized. On the floor of the reticular groove, interlaminar area and in the omasal groove, the accumulations of numerous eosinophilic cells were observed in the superficial region. Under the scanning electron microscope, shallow transverse grooves were seen on the surface of the ruminal papillae. In general, the surface structure seemed to be similar to that of sheep rather than cattle. Cellular formations of the collagen fibrils were observed at the subepithelial region. In conclusion, examination of the forestomach allows classification of the Japanese serows as requiring an intermediate type of feeding habit and being between concentrate selectors and grass-roughage eaters from a morphological view.  相似文献

Thirty Holstein fetuses from 100 to 251 d after conception were utilized to study prenatal anatomical development of the epithelium of the rumen and reticulum. Four calves at birth were included in the study for comparison. Tissue sections were frozen and stained to locate specific enzymes. At 100 d, the epithelial layer of the rumen was differentiated into a thin basal zone and a thickened superficial zone of undifferentiated cells. The basement membrane was straight, and in both zones cells were perpendicular to it. At 120 to 141 d, low, primary undulations were detected in the basal zone, basement membrane and underlying lamina propria. At 150 to 166 d, secondary undulations and incipient papillae began to resemble the papillae of mature mucosa. In rumen papillae of 192-d to 215-d fetuses, shallow furrows began to separate papillae apexes from the mass of epithelium. In fetuses 244 to 251 d, the papillae began to be a separate entity. At birth, the basal position of the papillae still remained fused. An incipient separation between the papillae was seen. Several dehydrogenase enzymes, including those associated with the Krebs cycle and reductase associated with energy transformation, were observed in both ruminal and reticular tissue. Alkaline phosphatase activity was localized in the stratum corneum and in blood vessels. Development of the honeycomb configuration of reticular epithelium was evident in the 100-d fetus and progressed rapidly with age.  相似文献

The stomach of the lesser mouse deer (Tragulus javanicus) was observed macroscopically. It consisted of only three compartments, rumen, reticulum and abomasum without omasum. The rumen was S-shaped with large ventral and caudoventral blind sacs and the reticulum was larger than the abomasum. Internally, the rumen was covered with numerous ruminal papillae even on the pillars and the ruminoreticular fold. These papillae were leaf- or tongue-like shaped and varied in size and density. The reticulum had honey-combed crests and the secondary crests were found rarely. The lips of the reticular groove were prominent and more developed in the aboral part than in the oral one. A sac-like transition zone, which had more prominent mucosal folds than had the floor of the reticular groove, was observed between the caudal end of the reticular groove and the abomasum. Mucosal folds of the abomasum were spiral, low but rather thick. These findings were discussed in view of comparison with other ruminants and of possible functional implications.  相似文献

The ruminal mucosa of 15 pygmy goats of different age (Z1 approximately 4-5 months, Z2 approximately 1 year, Z3 approximately 1.5-5 years) were studied gross-anatomically concerning their colour, clumping of papillae, fodder precipitations on the papillae, areas poor in papillae or devoid of them and the development of papillae. The density of papillae/cm2 in the 3 groups investigated was 79.4; 67.3; 58.0; the mean length of the papillae (mm) 1.75; 1.86; 2.96; the mean breadth of the papillae (mm) 1.3; 1.2; 2.0; the area of the ruminal mucosa (cm2) 799; 943; 1 195; the area of the ruminal pillars (cm2) 38; 41; 69; the number of the papillae/rumen 59,940; 58,022; 64,782; the total absorptive area (cm2) 3,802; 3,854; 11,268; the surface magnifying factor 4.0; 3.4; 8.4.  相似文献

Based on gross dissection of fifteen adult animals (11 females, 4 males), we described the arterial supply of the stomach and intestines of the pampas deer (Ozotoceros bezoarticus), a South American endangered species. The coeliac artery emitted the splenic, left gastric and hepatic arteries. The splenic artery directed towards the spleen, and the right ruminal artery, which is its only collateral directed towards the stomach, being the main artery of the rumen. The left gastric artery gave origin to the left ruminal, the reticular and the left gastroepiploic arteries. The left gastroepiploic artery originated the reticular accessory artery. Both arteries, gastric and left gastroepiploic, anastomosed their right counterparts derived from the hepatic artery on the curvatures of the abomasum. The cranial mesenteric artery irrigated the second half of the duodenum until the beginning of the descending colon. The thickest branch emitted by the cranial mesenteric artery was the ileocolic artery, which was destined to the ascending colon, caecum and ileum. The colic branches and the right colic arteries were irradiated on the right surface of the spiral loop of the ascending colon and distributed to both centripetal and centrifugal coils of the ascending colon; the colic branches were also anastomosed with the last jejunals and ileals and with the right colic arteries. There were no variations in the origin of any of the main branches derived from the coeliac and cranial mesenteric arteries. This species had a basic pattern of arterial distribution similar to small domestic ruminants.  相似文献

The macroscopic anatomy of the stomach and intestines of adult axis deer (Axis axis), a cervid species considered intermediate/mixed feeder, was observed and recorded. Nine adult wild axis deers of both sexes were used and studied by simple dissection. The ruminal papillae were distributed unevenly in the overall area of the inner surface of rumen and primarily were more large and abundant within the atrium. The ruminal pillars had no papillae. There was an additional ruminal pillar located between the right longitudinal and right coronary ventral pillars connected to the caudal pillar. No dorsal coronary pillars were found, and the ventral coronary pillars are connected. The reticulum was the third compartment in size, and the maximum height of the reticular crests was 1.0 mm. The Cellulae reticuli were not divided and rarely contained secondary crests. There were no Papillae unguiculiformes. The omasum was the smallest gastric compartment. The abomasum had about twelve spiral plicae, and a small pyloric torus was present. The intraruminal papillation was similar to those species that are characterized by a higher proportion of grass in their natural diet. The finding of the small reticular crests is typical for browser ruminants and was coincident with data reported for other deer. The comparative ratio of the small intestine to the large intestine was 1.69, in terms of length measurements in axis deer and appears below of the ‘browser range’. We concluded that the gastrointestinal system of axis deer reflected similar morphological characteristics of the both types of ruminants: browser and grazer, and we consider it as an intermediate feeder.  相似文献

An 11-month-old Japanese Black steer with chronic bloat underwent clinical and histological analyses. During the observation period, it showed normal appetite and fecal volume but persistent chronic bloat symptoms. Compared to controls, the steer's feces contained undigested large straws. Necropsy revealed normal rumen, reticulum, and abomasum but a small omasum. The rumen, reticulum, and abomasum mucosa was normal, with well-developed ruminal papillae. However, severe hypoplasia of the omasal laminae was observed along with hypoplasia reticular groove and ruminoreticular fold. The contents of the reticulum, omasum, and abomasums comprised undigested large sized hay particles. The omasum papillae showed no pathological abnormalities. This is a rare case of a steer with chronic bloat probably caused by severe hypoplasia of the omasal laminae.  相似文献

Twenty neonatal calves were fed milk plus 1 of 4 rations ad libitum: pelleted concentrates plus alfalfa hay, pelleted concentrates plus ground alfalfa hay, pelleted concentrates alone, or pelleted concentrates containing whey. Eight calves were killed at 4 weeks of age, and 12 calves at 6 weeks. The ruminal mucosa was examined grossly, by light microscopy, and by scanning electron microscopy. Well-developed differences among groups were evident in calves at 6 weeks of age; changes at 4 weeks were similar, but less developed. In 6-week-old calves fed concentrates plus alfalfa hay ad libitum, papillae were flattened and tongue shaped on the ventral floor of the atrium ruminis (cranial sac). Calves fed concentrates plus ground alfalfa had tongue shaped, rounded, and finger-like papillae. Calves fed concentrates alone or concentrates plus whey developed small, nodular, branched papillae which were cauliflower shaped and severly parakeratotic and were arranged on transverse folds on the floor of the atrium ruminis and on zigzag folds elsewhere in the rumen, except on the dorsal wall in contact with the gas bubble. The transition from tongue-shaped to nodular-shaped papillae under the influence of ration occurred last on the floor of the atrium ruminis. At least in 6-week-old calves, that site generally is not typical of changes in most ruminal papillae.  相似文献

Developmental changes in the mucous membrane of the rumen in bovine fetuses were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The ruminal epitheliums were obtained from 20 bovine fetuses and 4 bovine neonates. The samples were divided into 3 groups. Group 1 was examined in the epithelial surface by SEM. Group 2 was examined in the surface of the lamina propria and the reverse face of the epithelium by SEM, after having separate the epithelium from the lamina propria by Scallata's PBS-EDTA method. Group 3 was examined in histological aspect.
The ruminal papillae appeared first in early in the 5th month of gestation. On the other hand, the papillae of the lamina propria appeared first in early 4th month or late 4th month of gestation. It seemed that the formation of papillae in the lamina propria always preceded that of ruminal papillae. Meanwhile, some epithelial cells were exfoliated from the ruminal surface cells during late 4th month to early 5th month of gestation. Ruminal surface cells came to have keratohyaline granules from the 5th month of gestation onward.  相似文献

Histomorphometric and scanning electron microscopic analyses were carried out on 74 embryos and fetuses and 20 sheep (early postnatal to adult age). Histodifferentiation of the rumen took place at 33 days of fetal life. Ruminal pillars were observed at 42 days, and at 61 days, ruminal papillae appeared as evaginations of the epithelial stratum basale. Neutral mucopolysaccharides first appeared in epithelial cells at 46 days of fetal life; thereafter, numbers decreased gradually and subsequently stabilized in postnatal life. Acid mucopolysaccharides, mucins, and mucoid compounds were not detected. Age and diet were recognized as factors that determine the structure of the ruminal mucosa. Growth curves and formulas were set out for each tissue layer.  相似文献

The cells in the condensed fibrous layer in the lamina propria of the ruminal mucosa of the calves and cows were studied at the light microscopic level. Abundant actin-immunoreactive cells were detected both in the calves and cows, while desmin-immunoreactive cells were moderate in frequency in the cows and low or absent in the calves. Vimentin-immunoreactive cells were abundant in the cows but moderate to low in frequency in the calves. These cells were distributed to form a condensed layer being more abundant in the ruminal papillae than the interpapillar mucosae in the cows and equal in the papillae and interpapillar mucosae in the calves. At the ultrastructural level, smooth muscle cells and fibroblasts were abundant in the deep core of the ruminal papilla of the cows. The present results suggest that the condensed fibrous layer revealed in the ruminal mucosae contains smooth muscle cell population which could be regarded as the specialized lamina muscularis mucosae.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to describe differences in the ontogenesis of the rumen in the sheep (domestic ruminant) and deer (wild ruminant). A total of 50 embryos and fetuses of Merino sheep and 50 of Iberian deer were used, from the first stages of prenatal life until birth. For the study, the animals were divided into five experimental groups according to the most relevant histological characteristics. The appearance of the rumen from the primitive gastric tube was earlier in the sheep (22% gestation, 33 days) than in the deer (25% gestation, 66 days). In both cases it displayed a primitive epithelium of a stratified, cylindrical, non‐ciliary type. At around 28% gestation in the sheep (42 days) and 26% (67 days) in the deer, the rumen was configured of three clearly‐differentiated layers: internal or mucosal, middle or muscular and external or serosal. In both species the stratification of the epithelial layer was accompanied by modifications in its structure with the appearance of the ruminal pillars and papillae. The pillars appeared before the papillae and the appearance of both structures was always earlier in the deer (pillars: 70 days, 27% gestation; papillae: 97 days, 36% gestation) than in the sheep (pillars: 42 days, 28% gestation; papillae: 57 days, 38% gestation). The outlines of the ruminal papillae appeared as evaginations of the basal zone toward the ruminal lumen, dragging in their formation the basal membrane, the lamina propria and the submucosa. The tegumentary mucosa of the rumen was without secretion capability in the first embryonic phases. From 67 days (26% gestation) the neutral mucopolysaccharides appeared in the deer and at 46 days (30% gestation) in the sheep. In both cases they continued to decrease until birth, this diminution being more pronounced in the deer. Finally, the presence of neuroendocrine and glial cells was detected in the deer at earlier stages than in the sheep.  相似文献

The study of lingual surfaces and the surface of interface epithelium-connective tissue of the tongue of Bradypus torquatus was performed by employing the light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The results revealed that the rostral part of the tongue presents a round apex and covered by filiform and fungiform lingual papillae and a ventral smooth surface. It was observed that the epithelial layer of the dorsal surface possesses the basal, spinosum, granular and cornified epithelial cells. The lamina propria is characterized by a dense connective tissue forming the long, short and round papillae. Numerous typical filiform papillae are located especially in the rostral part intermingled for few fungiform papillae, which were revealed in three-dimensional SEM images. Usually, the fungiform papillae are located in the border of rostral apex of the tongue exhibiting the rounded form. They are covered by keratinized epithelial cells. In the fungiform papillae, several taste pores were observed on the surface. The vallate papillae presented numerous taste buds in the wall of epithelial cells, being that the major number of taste buds is located on the superior half of vallate papilla. The taste pores are surrounded by several laminae of keratinized epithelial cells. The samples treated with NaOH solution and examined by SEM revealed, after removal of the epithelial layer, the dense connective core in original disposition, presenting different sizes and shapes. The specimens stained with Picrosirius and examined by polarized light microscopy revealed the connective tissue, indicating the collagen fibres type I and type III.  相似文献

A mature dairy cow was transitioned from a high forage (100% forage) to a high-grain (79% grain) diet over seven days. Continuous ruminal pH recordings were utilized to diagnose the severity of ruminal acidosis. Additionally, blood and rumen papillae biopsies were collected to describe the structural and functional adaptations of the rumen epithelium. On the final day of the grain challenge, the daily mean ruminal pH was 5.41 ± 0.09 with a minimum of 4.89 and a maximum of 6.31. Ruminal pH was under 5.0 for 130 minutes (2.17 hours) which is characterized as the acute form of ruminal acidosis in cattle. The grain challenge increased blood beta-hydroxybutyrate by 1.8 times and rumen papillae mRNA expression of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A synthase by 1.6 times. Ultrastructural and histological adaptations of the rumen epithelium were imaged by scanning electron and light microscopy. Rumen papillae from the high grain diet displayed extensive sloughing of the stratum corneum and compromised cell adhesion as large gaps were apparent between cells throughout the strata. This case report represents a rare documentation of how the rumen epithelium alters its function and structure during the initial stage of acute acidosis.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine whether subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) could be diagnosed by continuous measurements of the reticular pH, as compared with the ruminal pH, using healthy cows fed a control diet and SARA cows fed a rumen acidosis-inducing diet. The reticular and ruminal pH were measured simultaneously by a radio transmission pH measurement system. The mean reticular pH at 1-h intervals decreased gradually from the morning feeding to the next feeding time in both healthy and SARA cows, though the decrease in the ruminal pH was observed to be more drastic as compared with that observed in the reticular pH. The threshold of the 1-h mean pH in the reticulum for a diagnosis of SARA was considered to be 6.3, and a significant positive correlation was observed between the reticular and ruminal pH. No differences in the concentrations of lactic acid, ammonia nitrogen, and volatile fatty acids were noted between the reticular and ruminal fluids in SARA cows. These results demonstrate that the reticular pH can be used to detect SARA in cows, as opposed to using the ruminal pH.  相似文献

The tongue in the adult European mole (Talpa europea L.) was examined by scanning electron microscope. The elongated tongue with a rounded apex is about 12-13 mm in length and 3-4 mm in width. On the apex the shallow median groove is present. On the dorsal surface of the lingual mucosa two types of mechanical papillae and two types of gustatory papillae were observed. Mechanical papillae are represented by numerous filiform papillae with a single process, covering the whole surface of the apex and body of the tongue, and massive conical papillae, found on the root of the tongue. The structure and density of filiform papillae varies in the anterior and posterior part of the tongue. A unique trait of the tongue in the European mole is the occurrence on the apex of the tongue of a single row of conical papillae. Gustatory papillae are represented by numerous fungiform papillae and one pair of vallate papillae. Dome-shaped fungiform papillae in the anterior part of the tongue are arranged linearly along both margins of the tongue, whereas in the posterior part of the body of the tongue flat fungiform papillae are distributed evenly among filiform papillae. Oval vallate papillae are surrounded by a continuous furrow and a single pad. In the posterior part of the root behind conical papillae the surface of the mucosa is flat with numerous orifices of lingual papillae located there. Observations on the distribution and structure of gustatory papillae in the common mole did not show the existence of special traits, differing them from those in terrestrial insectivores. The comparison of the morphology of the tongue, the distribution and structure of the lingual papillae in the European mole with those in the other species of Insectivores, indicated of a general similarity of features within the family Talpidae.  相似文献

A number of problems seen in veal calves are associated with insufficient adaptation to the changes in husbandry connected with the fattening system. These problems include chronic tympanitis, chronic vomiting, cachexia, unthriftiness, abomasal erosions and ulcers. Some of these problems are associated with failure of the reticular groove reflex, and result in ruminal drinking. Persistent ruminal drinking causes a syndrome characterised by a variety of symptoms such as unthriftiness, severe growth retardation, inappetence, recurrent tympany, abdominal distension, a long dry haircoat and clay-like faeces. Clinical studies performed to investigate the pathogenesis of the syndrome are described. It was found that the milk was stored in the rumen and was partly broken down. The presence of milk in the rumen induced typical changes in the ruminal mucosa (hyper/parakeratosis) and also inhibited casein clot formation in the abdomasum. The small intestinal mucosa showed villous atrophy. After training, the reticular groove reflex was re-established in a number of patients but the growth rate of these calves did not return to normal.  相似文献

The growth and development of the stomach, gastric epithelia and associated microflora of M. albicaudatus have been quantified and a chronology of morphological, histological and ultrastructural events documented. In neonates, a monogastric stomach was present with distinct separation of glandular (antral) and cornified (fornical) regions. Development of the fornix ventricularis and ‘grenzfalte’ characterized the transitional period and gave rise to the bilocular condition. An early autochthonous microflora of facultative cocci and cocco-bacilli became established. In the infantile phase, fornical papillae developed and provided microhabitats for colonization by symbiotic anaerobic bacilli. Cocci and cocco-bacilli remained attached to (or successive populations colonized) the folded fornical epithelium and pregastric pouch. All common bacteria , were attached to the gastric epithelium by a capsular (slime) layer in palisade formation. The synchrony of events in gastric development (appearance of papillae, ingestion of solid food and the colonization of papillae by bacilli), the numerical abundance of papillae bacilli, and the absence of epithelial damage, suggest that the bacilli are autochthonous, symbiotic and aid the digestive processes of M. albicaudatus.  相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to investigate the possibility of estimating the outflow of nutrients and microbial protein from the rumen based on sampling reticular contents as an alternative to duodenal sampling. Microbial protein flow estimates were also compared with a third method based on sampling of ruminal contents. Reticular and duodenal digesta and ruminal contents were recovered from 4 cows used in a 4 x 4 Latin square design experiment, in which the ruminal effects of 4 exogenous enzyme preparations were studied. Large and small particulate and fluid markers were used to estimate digesta flow in a triple-marker model; 15N was used as a microbial marker. Reticular and duodenal digesta were segregated into small and large particles (SP and LP, respectively) and a fluid phase, and ruminal digesta was segregated into particulate and fluid phases. Compared with digesta recovered at the duodenum, reticular digesta had lower OM and greater NDF contents. The proportion of microbial N was notably greater in the fluid phase of reticular digesta. Ruminal outflow of DM and OM was greater (by 17 and 28%) and that of NDF was lower (by 14%) when estimated from duodenal compared with reticular samples. There was no difference in the estimated flow of starch and nonammonia and microbial N between the reticular and duodenal techniques. Microbial N flow estimated based on ruminal sampling was similar to those based on duodenal and reticular sampling. The ruminal method, however, grossly overestimated flow of DM, OM, and NDF. This study supports the concept that microbial protein outflow from the rumen can be measured based on sampling of ruminal or reticular digesta. The reticular sampling technique can also provide reliable estimates for ruminal digestibility of OM, N, and fiber fractions. These findings need to be confirmed in experiments with basal diets varying in structure and forage-to-concentrate ratios.  相似文献

The presence of lingual papillae and the nerve endings in the middle region of the tongue mucosa of collared peccary (Tayassu tajacu) were studied using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy, based upon the silver impregnation method. The middle region of tongue mucosa revealed numerous filiform and fungiform papillae. The thick epithelial layer showed epithelial cells and a dense connective tissue layer containing nerve fibre bundles and capillaries. The sensory nerve endings, intensely stained by silver impregnation, were usually non-encapsulated and extended into the connective tissue of the filiform and fungiform papillae very close to the epithelial cells. In some regions, the sensory nerves fibres formed a dense and complex network of fine fibrils. The presence of these nerve fibrils may characterize the mechanisms of transmission of sensitive impulses to the tongue mucosa.  相似文献
