Oak,Quercus robur, acorns are sometines attacked by a weevil or infested by fungi (Murray, 1974). The number of acorns produced varies greatly from year to year. Acorns produced in the years between mast years may escape these weevil or fungal attacks, be dispersed and germinate.

Acorns were collected annually from 1983 to 1989 from five oak trees in southern Sweden. The percentage of acorns attacked by a weevil or fungi, or both, were monitored and the acorns' ability to germinate was tested.

Not all acorns were damaged in low crop years; the proportion of undamaged acorns varied between 33 and 69%. The proportion of weevil-attacked acorns differed significantly between the years. The proportion of acorns that were able to germinate in each category did not vary significantly between years. The germination ability was significantly higher in undamaged or fungi-infested acorns.  相似文献

  • ? Pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) acorns are recalcitrant so they are difficult to store. Therefore, deterioration in quality during storage may reduce seedling yield and quality. In an attempt to address this, the effects of drying and soaking treatments on acorn germination were assessed.
  • ? After harvesting on two occasions in October, the moisture content (MC) of acorns were adjusted using the following treatments: (1) fresh state or control (46–48% MC); (2) soaked in fresh state (46–48%); (3) dried (40–42%) (standard method); and (4) dried and then soaked (46–48%). The treated acorns were allowed to germinate at 15 °C, both before and after storage at ?3 °C.
  • ? Treatment effects were generally consistent for each harvest date. Compared to the untreated controls, soaking alone and drying followed by soaking significantly increased germination both before and after storage. Storage reduced germination, except for the dried and soaked acorns.
  • ? The results confirmed that drying and soaking improved acorn germination, but this was not mediated through an effect on acorn MC. In a separate nursery experiment, acorns given this treatment resulted in higher seedling yields and better quality plants than those given the standard treatment (dried to 40–42% MC).

    Acorn predation by insects and its effects on seedling establishment were investigated among three co-occurring oak species (Quercus variabilis, Q. serrata and Cyclobalanopsis glauca) in a subtropical evergreen broadleaved forest, Southwest China. All oak species had high tannin concentration (over 10%) but differed in acorn mass and germination schedule. We hypothesized that the defensive traits in acorns (e.g. seed mass, tannins and germination schedule) act together to reduce damage from insect seed predators. Q. variabilis had significantly lower predation (51.2%) than either Q. serrata (71.4%) or C. glauca (73.8%). Seedling establishment decreased with increasing injury for all oak species studied. As much as 43% of insect infested acorns germinated and established as viable seedlings despite extensive acorn mortality due to insect seed predators. The larger seed mass of Q. variabilis appears to tolerate insect infestation and retain enough stored reserves for seed germination and early growth of seedlings. Autumn germination also benefited Q. variabilis and Q. serrata, allowing escape from both direct and ancillary effects of insect feeding by fast reserve shifting to immediate germination of mature acorns. Our results indicate that large seed mass, tannin and autumn germination act together to ameliorate effects of insect seed predation, and the joint evolution of resistance and tolerance (as well as escape through autumn germination) in acorns may be the selective consequences driven in part by interactions with insect seed predators.  相似文献

    Effects of flood duration (0, 10, 20, and 30 days) and season (winter and spring) on acorn germination were tested for two upland oaks [black and northern red oak (Quercus velutina Lam. and Q. rubra L.)] and two bottomland oaks [cherrybark and water oak (Q. pagoda Raf. and Q. nigra L.)]. Acorns were stratified for 30 days before flooding at a depth of 15 cm along the edge of a small pond. After flooding, acorns were sowed in sand-filled plastic cups and germinated for 40 days. Flood duration and season strongly affected radicle and epicotyl emergence of the upland oaks, but effects were generally limited to spring flooding. Embryo axes of the upland oak acorns were severely damaged with as little as 10 days of spring flooding. Almost no epicotyls developed, but radicles developed from the connective tissues between embryo axes and the cotyledons of many acorns. Spring flooding also significantly increased the percentage of decayed acorns for the upland oaks. In contrast, germination of the bottomland oaks was slightly improved by flooding during both seasons. Results demonstrated that the effects of flooding on the distribution of species within bottomlands can begin with seed storage and germination.  相似文献

    Eight biological control agents (BCAs; Clonostachys rosea, Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma polysporum, Phlebiopsis gigantea, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas chlororaphis, Streptomyces griseoviridis), five disinfectants and a fungicide (Prochloras‐ManganTM) were evaluated for the control of harmful mycoflora on Ciboria batschiana‐infected English oak (Quercus robur) acorns during storage at ?1°C. All treatments were tested on both hot water‐treated (HW) and untreated acorns. HW‐treated acorns generally stored better than untreated acorns as a result of elimination of C. batschiana. The HW treatment increased the germination percentage before storage from 60 to 85%. Germination of HW‐treated acorns decreased from 85 to 40% after 16.5 months of storage, whereas germination of untreated acorns decreased from 60 to 20% after a similar time. Ciboria batschiana infection of untreated acorns increased from 14% before storage to 55% after 16 months of storage. All disinfectants and BCAs had a positive effect on viability and particularly on control of C. batschiana in untreated acorns. Best control of C. batschiana occurred with C. rosea, MycostopTM (S. griseoviridis), Binab TFTM (T. polysporum + T. harzianum), and P. chlororaphis. For HW‐treated acorns, there was only a small effect of BCAs on acorn viability while the fungicide and the disinfectants had no effect. Treatments also affected the saprophytic mycoflora with the HW treatment reducing the frequency of Cladosporium spp. and Papulaspora spp., but enhancing Alternaria spp., Mucoraceae and Penicillium spp. However, when combined with HW treatment, several BCAs significantly reduced the prevalence of these fungi. Also, C. rosea reduced the growth of Fusarium spp. Significant negative correlations (p < 0.001) were found between acorn germination and certain storage fungi such as Acremoniella atra, Cladosporium spp. and dematiaceous mycelia.  相似文献

    The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of habitat edges on the probability of acorn germination of three oak species (Quercus crassifolia Humb. and Bonpl., Quercus rugosa Née and Quercus laurina Humb. and Bonpl.). The effects of edge type (hard and soft), habitat type (grassland, edges and forest) and leaf litter cover (covered or uncovered acorns) on acorn germination was evaluated by the experimental establishment of acorns along transects crossing habitat edges. More acorns developed into seedlings in grasslands (38%) than in the forest edge (18%) or the forest interior (15%). In sites with soft edges, a higher number of seedlings emerged from acorns covered by litter compared with acorns sowed in the adjacent forest edge and forest interior (P < 0.05). In sites with hard edges, fewer seedlings emerged in the edge (14%) compared with the adjacent grassland (38%), and the adjacent forest (20%) presented intermediate values. However, in sites with soft edges significant differences in seedling emergence were recorded between the grassland (38%) and the forest (10%), whereas the edge presented intermediate values (23%). The effect of leaf litter cover on acorn germination was only significant in grasslands in sites with soft edges (P < 0.05). Acorns in grasslands received relatively little insect damage (10%) compared with the edge (19%) and the forest (30%, P < 0.05), emphasising the importance of acorn dispersal for successful oak establishment. The implications for regeneration of these oak species and the dynamics of montane oak forests in Mexico are discussed.  相似文献

    A comparative study of pre- and post-dispersal damage to the acrons of two oaks,Quercus serrata Thunb. andQ. mongolica Fischer, was done over 3 years in a species-rich deciduous forest in central Japan. The numbers of acorns bored into by moth larvae and byKobuzo rectirostris (Roelofs) was low and relatively uniform each year for both oak species, but the numbers bored into byCurculio spp. varied from year to year. The proportions of acorns attacked were independent of the density of acorns produced for both oak species. The proportions of the dispersed acorns of both oak species on the forest floor that disappeared between autumn and spring were less than 27%, and were lower for species in the stand that belong to family Fagaceae. However, by the next summer, most dispersed sound acorns had been infested by moths that specialized on post-dispersal acorns.  相似文献

    A field experiment was established in the autumn of 1992 in order to study predation of acorns, germination and early growth of oak seedlings. The experiment was established on a clearcut and an adjacent oak shelterwood in southern Sweden. In the experiment, a total of 6 840 acorns were sown. The sowing was carried out with different vegetation control and soil preparation treatments and with different planting depths.The germination percentage was highest for acorns sown at five cm depth and lowest for acorns sown on top of the soil, and lower for acorns sown in areas where the humus layer had been removed than in areas where the humus layer was retained. There was no difference in the percentage germination after two growing seasons between acorns sown inside the shelterwood and acorns sown on the clearcut. The height of the seedlings was lowest when the humus was removed while the number of leaves per seedling was lowest for seedlings in untreated areas after two growing seasons. Furthermore, seedlings in untreated areas showed the lowest relative height growth rate during the second growing season. In spite of higher biomass of ground vegetation in undisturbed areas compared to treated areas, no effect of the soil and vegetation control treatments could be found on soil water potentials. The soil temperature and photosynthetic active radiation at seedling level were higher in areas where soil preparation and vegetation control had been performed. However, it was concluded that neither low soil water availability nor low light levels could be the only cause of lower relative height growth rate during the second growing season for seedlings in undisturbed areas.  相似文献

    Rodents usually exert important role, through their scatter seed hoarding behavior, on plant regeneration in the field. To investigate the effects of burial and insects infection on germination and seedling growth of acorns of Quercus variabilis, perfect and infected acorns were buried in the soil among four depths, 0 cm, 4 cm, 8 cm and 12 cm, to simulate the seed hoarding behavior by rodents in the field. The results showed that (1) the germination rate were both high, under 4 cm burial depth, for perfect and infected acorns (92% and 53% separately), and decreased significantly with increased burial depth; (2) perfect acorns germinated better in 4 cm burial depth group by autumn of first year; (3) there 32% (perfect) and 26% (infected) acorns with 0 cm burial depth, on the soil surface, germinated successfully; for infected acorns, the 4 cm depth group had the best germination or seedling recruitment in both the first year and the second year; (4) acorns of Q. variabilis exhibited dormancy period ca 7 months; (5) burial, infection, and the interaction between these two factors influenced several aspects including stem height, leaf weight, Tannic acid, and biomass within seedling growth; (6) the results from this study suggest that proper burial would be helpful for the germination and seedling growth, and seedlings of shallow buried acorns had an advantage in their early development; and (7) infection by insects will not inevitably influence seedling early development.  相似文献

    The effects of seed pretreatment and harvest date on the germination of European rowan (Sorbus aucuparia L) seeds were examined. In one experiment, seeds were subjected to drying, storage, soaking, warm and chilling treatments after harvesting in mid- and late August. In another experiment, fully imbibed (FI) seeds were given warm treatment for six weeks and then various durations of chilling (4?±?1°C) for up to 24 weeks. Thereafter, the seeds were adjusted to target moisture content of 35% and 30% or remained in the FI state and were then subjected to either subsequent chilling or freezing (?3°C) for up to 32 weeks. The treated seeds were allowed to germinate at a constant 15°C with 8 hours of lighting per day. Treatment effects were generally consistent for each harvest date. Seeds did not germinate unless they were chilled and germination rates were low unless the seeds were soaked. Warm treatment applied before chilling appeared to induce dormancy. The effect of storage varied with harvest date and storage treatment, with germination being highest for seeds harvested in late August. Mild freezing of ≥16 weeks duration following 16–24 weeks initial chilling resulted in >80% germination, more than could be achieved using chilling alone.  相似文献

    The effects of reproductive phenology, date of cone harvest, cone storage and seed pretreatment on yield and germination of seeds from a Douglas-fir [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco] seed orchard were studied. Flowering phenology (early, intermediate or late) had no discernible effect on seed maturation. Higher germination and yields of filled seeds were obtained from cones collected in mid-August, approximately 2 weeks prior to cone opening, than from cones collected just as they began to open. Seeds extracted immediately following harvest germinated better than those from cones stored for 2 months. Seeds from all treatments were dormant and responded to prechilling by exhibiting increased germination rates. The implications of these findings for cone-crop management are discussed.  相似文献

    Effects of drought stresses induced by polyethylene glycol (PEG) (0.0%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30%, with four replicates) on germination of Mongolian pine (Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica) seeds produced in plantations (southern Keerqin sandy land) and natural forests (Hulunbeier sandy plain) were observed. The results indicated that the seeds from both provenances did not germinate when PEG concentration was more than 25%. The time of initial germination and that of its completion of stressed seeds from both provenances were delayed when compared with the unstressed seeds. The germination capacity and germination rate of natural seeds were significantly higher than those of plantation seeds for all treatment levels (P < 0.05). The mean growth rates of radicle and hypocotyl from natural seeds were significantly higher than those from plantation seeds at all treatment levels below 20% PEG treatment (P < 0.05). The ratios of radicle to hypocotyl of 20% PEG treatment were significant higher than those of the corresponding controls for both provenances (P < 0.05). These results suggested that Mongolian pine seeds/seedlings had stronger resistance to PEG drought stresses; 10% PGE stress did not significantly influence germination. Natural seeds exhibited more resistance to PEG stress than plantation seeds. It was concluded that drought stress on seed germination might be one cause of obstructed natural regeneration of Mongolian pine plantations on sandy land. It is recommended that natural seeds be used for afforestation, and light drought stress (e.g., 10% PEG stress) may be useful in improving seed germination and the growth of radicles and hypocotyls.  相似文献

    The rates of hypocotyl and radicle survival and of germination success were investigated in mature acorns ofQuercus variabilis Blume in relation to endosperm loss due to seed insects. The acorns were damaged by curculio weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and moths, including tortricid moths (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae); the former were more abundant than the latter. Acorns damaged by curculio weevils showed a significantly lower germination rate when there was a large endosperm loss than the rate for sound acorns. The survival rate of the hypocotyl and radicle also decreased as endosperm loss increased. These results suggest that acorn germination is directly inhibited by damage to the hypocotyl and radicle, which depends on the amount of endosperm eaten by the weevils. However, the germination rate of acorns with hypocotyl and radicle was consistently high, irrespective of the degree of endosperm loss, which suggests that weevil-damaged acorns probably germinate, provided the hypocotyl and radicle survive until the cessation of damage.     We studied population changes of the field mouse,Apodemus speciosus Temminck, by live trapping in a mixed stand of cypress and broad-leaved trees at Tama Forest Science Garden during the period from October 1991 to March 1994. We also used radiotelemetry to investigate acorn hoarding. The number of mice captured in 1992 was three to ten times higher than that in either 1991 or 1993. The home ranges of resident mice overlapped greatly, but a path and differences in the vegetation structure may have affected the home range of individuals. From June 1992 to April 1993, mice actively transported and hoarded acrons. Individuals hoarded 70% of the acorns in their home ranges within one day after release. This species was a typical scatter-hoarder and hoarded a single acorn at each cache site. Mice buried acrons in the soil at the first hoarding, but recovered and carried them into their nests later. Although more than 50% of the acorns were buried 0–5 cm deep, where the condition for germination seemed to be good, mice recovered and ate all cached acorns. Mice relocated acorns farther from the original food station as they repeated hoarding. Mice transported acorns an average of about 15–18 m (range: 2.2–49.8 m) before they ate them. From May 1993 to March 1994, the hoarding behavior of mice was not active. Most acorns were left at food stations or cache sites for more than three months. Acorn hoarding byA. speciosus probably contributes little to the dispersal and regeneration of acorn-producing trees in years with a high rodent density.  相似文献

    The germination of bay laurel (Laurus nobilis L.) seeds wasexamined both in the laboratory and in the field during twoyears. Seeds were collected from a grove in a garden in the townof Drama, Northern Greece, by mid November in the first year andby late November in the second year. The seeds with and withoutpericarp were given a warm-moist (20 °C day/12 °C night) oncold-moist (4±1 °C) treatment in peat or sand. After treatment theseeds were placed in the germinator along with controls. Thegermination of seeds with and without pericarp was alsoinvestigated in the field (late fall sowing). It was found thatthe pericarp caused dormancy. In seeds without pericarp,cold-moist and warm-moist stratification both proved to besuccessful in breaking embryo dormancy (100% and 96% successrespectively). The required stratification duration was 50 daysfor the warm-moist and 60 days for the cold-moist treatments.During the cold-moist stratification no germination was observed.On the other hand, seeds started to germinate during thewarm-moist stratification by about the 50th day. In the fallsowing germination was 20% for seeds with pericarp and 41% for seeds without pericarp. Drying bay laurel seeds caused areduction of the seed germination.  相似文献

    Effects of stratification, desiccation, radicle pruning, and season of sowing on Quercus vulcanica germination and growth were studied to identify optimum nursery procedures for artificial regeneration of this species. Following stratification (0, 2, 4 and 8 weeks), acorns were germinated, and acorn moisture content and germination performance were also determined at various times during desiccation. In early December unsprouted acorns were planted in containers, and in early April sprouted acorns, which had been stored in polyethylene bags at 4 °C, with radicles left intact or with radicles pruned back to 1.0 cm were planted in containers.Stratification for 2 and 4 weeks did not increase germination percentage but significantly increased germination rate. Germination percentage of the seeds dropped when the moisture content of the seeds was reduced by desiccation, and the critical minimum moisture content of the recalcitrant Q. vulcanica acorns was found to be 11–16%. Spring sowing of sprouted acorns altered the morphology the containerized seedlings and caused the formation of significantly more main roots, but resulted in significantly less shoot height and shoot dry weight. Spring-sown sprouted acorns had also a significant advantage over the fall-sown unsprouted acorns in seedling survival, and thus nursery personnel should not be concerned if acorns sprout before sowing.  相似文献

    We conducted field studies to evaluate the impact that curculio weevil attacks on Pasania edulis (Fagacea) acorns have on the regeneration of this tree. The germination ratio of weevil-attacked acorns was significantly lower than that of sound acorns. The number and position of the attacks on acorns affected the germination ratio. The seedlings from weevil-attacked acorns were shorter and had a smaller leaf area than those from sound acorns. The negative effects on seedling height lasted for at least three years after germination. We also studied the handling of the two types of acorns by granivorous Apodemus mice in a broad-leaved forest dominated by P. edulis. The mice picked up, transported, hoarded, and recovered sound and weevil-attacked acorns similarly. In the study site, the seedlings from weevil-attacked acorns were estimated to account for 1.5–20.4 % of the total seedlings for cohorts of mast years and 0–3.7 % for those of poor or medium acorn production. From these results, we conclude that acorns with the lower part of their cotyledons slightly damaged by weevil larvae might still be able to contribute to the regeneration of P. edulis in the field but that their contribution would be negligible or small even in mast years in this study site.  相似文献

    To evaluate what prevents seed germination and why ingestion by birds enhances germination, we carried out germination experiments using bird-dispersed seeds of twoPrunus species (Prunus sargentii andP. ssiori) in the laboratory. Germination of seeds with following four treatments was compared: “Ingested seeds” excreted after feeding of fruits to birds; “Extracted seeds” deliberately extracted from the fruit pulp; “Juiced seeds” which were supplemented with the juice of the pulp after seeds had been deliberately extracted from the pulp; and “Intact seeds” in untreated whole fruits. Many ingested (27%, 23% inP. sargentii, 18% inP. ssiori) and extracted seeds (24% inP. sargentii, 17% inP. ssiori) germinated, and difference in germination percentages between ingested and extracted seeds were not significant, for eitherPrunus species. The Juiced seeds rarely germinated (2% inP. sargentii, 6% inP. ssiori), and seeds within intact fruits did not germinate. These results suggest that the fruit pulp and the juice of the pulp inhibit germination and the seeds could germinate without ingestion by birds once they had been manually extracted from pulp. Therefore, it is considered that bird ingestion enahnces germination by removing pulp, especially juice of the pulp, in these twoPrunus species.  相似文献

    Seed production and seed losses were monitored in an oak (Quercusrobur) wood in southern England between 1975 and 1988. In additionto acorns, seeds from several large beech (Fagus sylvatica)and sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa) trees which occurred withinthe wood, and from the understorey of hazel (Corylus avellana)trees, were also monitored. The seeds from these four tree speciesare all subject to heavy predation by rodents, as well as otherseed-eaters such as birds and insects. Seed fall tended to be irregular and three years, 1976, 1985and 1987 were considered oak mast years. There were too fewyears with large acorn crops to examine whether resource depletionin these years resulted in poor crops in subsequent years. Therewas no correlation in seed production between the four treespecies which does not agree with one of the predictions ofthe predator satiation theory of masting behaviour. The effectsof weather on seed production were investigated but few significantcorrelations were found. In general the results tended to supportprevious findings. Between 1980 and 1982 a serious outbreakof Tortrix moth caterpillars occurred within the wood and mayhave affected acorn production. A negative relationship wasfound between oak defoliation and acorn production in the subsequentyear. The loss of seeds from the forest floor was initially rapidand in 9 years no seeds survived into the following year andfood conditions were poor for granivores. In 3 of the remaining4 years acorns survived well into spring and early summer providinggood food conditions for forest rodents through to the timeswhen alternative food supplies became available. Although oaktrees contributed most seed energy in good years, the othertree species, especially beech, became important when acornproduction was poor. Predispersal losses due to predators werefrequently high and averaged 80 per cent, 40 per cent, 38 percent and 33 per cent in hazel, sweet chestnut, oak and beechrespectively. On average, hazel nuts tended to fall first, some6 weeks before acorns which tended to be the last seeds to fallof the four tree species. Knopper galls and weeviled acornsfell earlier than sound acorns. A key-factor analysis indicatedthat a failure to mature, predispersal predation and insectinfestation from weevils and Knopper galls contributed equallyto changes in numbers of acorns among years.  相似文献

    Garcinia kola is highly used as chew-stick for dental care in West Africa, but it is nearly commercially extinct in nature. To help find methods to increase rate and percentage of germination, we investigated its seed germination responses by using several collections and pre-treatments. Seeds processed from 6-week old green fruits did not germinate, whilst those of 10-week old partly-mature, at the intermediate stage through full development, germinated 46%. Seeds from orange mature fruits reached maximum 54–62% germination. Radicles emerged 6 weeks after sowing and normal germination with emergence of the primary single shoot growth occurred after 12 weeks. There was no significant difference (P ≥ 0.05) between germination responses of seeds from Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire. Seeds did not germinate when dried to below ca. 30% MC. De-coating seeds or soaking intact seeds in a 70% ethanol solution increased germination to 82–92%, and also increased germination rate; however germination was not uniform. Because difficulties in germinating these seeds stem from the physical presence of the seed coats and the slow growth of the embryos contained therein, we recommend that fresh seeds from mature fruits be de-coated and immediately sown in preferably, an aerated medium (e.g., sawdust) for cultivation.  相似文献
