The nycterohemeral pattern of eating and ruminating behavior was examined in six heifers given ad libitum access to a corn silage-based diet with or without 100 mg monensin.hd-1.d-1 in a two-period crossover design. Rhythm components (no. of cycles/24 h) were characterized by the finite Fourier transform of 24-h mastication activities series measured over 7 d. Analysis of variance of the daily mean of hourly activities and rhythm components 1 to 12 showed significant effects of heifer (H), monensin treatment (T), period (P) and T x P x H interactions. A reparameterization of the finite Fourier transform yielded the amplitude and the phase for each rhythm component and allowed the plot of periodograms and phase diagrams, respectively. Rhythm components 1, 2 and 3 contributed primarily in explaining the total dispersion of 24-h eating and ruminating mastication series. The major effect of monensin was to increase the phase at rhythm component 1, delaying by 1 h in the onset of rumination after the morning feeding. Heifer effects were significant and appeared related to variations in daily voluntary intake (VI) of individual heifers. Heifer 5, with the largest VI, had two main eating periods and the highest rate of eating. Heifer 4, with the smallest VI, partitioned mastication activity throughout the day into four main eating and ruminating periods. Differences among animals in their nycterohemeral chewing behavior patterns may be related to differences in forestomach structure associated with a larger VI capacity by animals having mastication rhythm components 1 and 3.  相似文献

Tests were performed to study the inhibitive capacity of protein-protease inhibitors, 17-beta estradiol, and progesterone in the blood serum of 21 heifers returning to oestrus which had been treated intramuscularly with 400 microgram LH/FSH-RH. Four selected heifers were examined as to the relationships between the concentrations of 17-beta estradiol, progesterone and the inhibitive capacity of the serum. Heifer no. 1 had low concentrations of 17-beta estradiol and higher concentrations of progesterone (average levels 7.8 and 657.4 pg ml-1 of serum). On the other hand, heifer no. 4 was found to have higher concentration of 17-beta estradiol and lower values of progesterone (average levels 28.3 and 325 pg ml-1 of serum). Having shown heat, the heifers were fertilized and remained in calf. Heifer no. 2 with a low concentration of progesterone (292 pg ml-1 of serum) and 17-beta estradiol (12.4 pg ml-1 of serum), as well as heifer no. 3 with a high concentration of both (830 pg ml-1 of serum and 22.7 pg ml-1 of serum, respectively) showed no heat and they were not mated. Heifers with significant differences in the concentrations of progesterone and 17-beta estradiol and with low values of protein-protease inhibitory capacities remained in-calf, whereas heifers with lower progesterone and 17-beta estradiol values, or adversely, with higher inhibition values, showed no heat. Synthetic LH/FSH-RH was found not to increase the amount of protein-protease inhibitors in heifer serum, as distinct from the cervical mucus of breeding cows treated with gestagens in heat synchronization.  相似文献

Twenty-two Hereford heifers were injected IM with prostaglandin F2 alpha a, 11 days apart to synchronize estrous cycles. Twelve of 14 heifers that had signs of estrus were inoculated IV with 1 of 3 modified-live infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus vaccines, and 2 were assigned to a nonvaccinated control group. Also, 6 of the 8 anestrous heifers were inoculated IV with 1 of the 3 vaccines on the fourth day after the last prostaglandin injection and the other 2 were assigned to the nonvaccinated group. Vaccine virus was isolated from the blood and nasal and vaginal secretions from the vaccinated heifers on postvaccination days 4, 7, and 9. On postvaccination day 9, all heifers were ovariectomized and ovarian tissues were processed for virus isolation and histologic examination. Vaccine virus was isolation and histologic examination. Vaccine virus was isolated from ovarian tissues of some heifers in each of the vaccine groups. Necrotic oophoritis characterized by multifocal areas of ovarian tissue necrosis, hemorrhage, and mononuclear lymphocytic infiltration was observed. The corpora lutea and surrounding ovarian tissues taken from vaccinated heifers in each group had varying amounts of necrotic and inflammatory change, but the changes appeared to be more severe in 1 group than in the other 2. Virus also was isolated from 2 of the controls; these heifers apparently became infected with vaccine virus that had been excreted from the vaccinated animals.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of supplemental tribasic copper chloride (Cu(2)(OH(3))Cl; TBCC) vs. Cu sulfate (CuSO(4)) on Cu status and voluntary forage DMI in growing heifers. Two 90-d experiments were conducted using 48 non-pregnant, crossbred heifers (24 heifers/experiment; 355 +/- 10.7 and 309 +/- 9.9 kg for Exp. 1 and 2, respectively). In each experiment, 3 supplemental Cu treatments were randomly allocated to heifers in individual pens consisting of (1) 100 mg of Cu/d from CuSO(4), (2) 100 mg of Cu/d from TBCC, or (3) 0 mg of Cu/d. The 2 experiments differed by the form of supplement used to deliver the Cu treatments (corn- vs. molasses-based supplements for Exp. 1 and 2, respectively). Supplements were formulated and fed to provide equivalent amounts of CP and TDN daily but differed in their concentration of the Cu antagonists, Mo (0.70 vs. 1.44 mg/kg), Fe (113 vs. 189 mg/kg), and S (0.18 vs. 0.37%) for corn- and molasses-based supplements, respectively. All heifers were provided free-choice access to ground stargrass (Cynodon spp.) hay. Jugular blood and liver biopsy samples were collected on d 0, 30, 60, and 90 of each experiment. Heifer BW was collected on d 0 and 90. Heifer ADG was not affected by Cu treatment (average = 0.22 +/- 0.11 and 0.44 +/- 0.05 kg for Exp. 1 and 2, respectively; P > 0.20). In Exp. 1, heifers provided supplemental Cu, independent of source, had greater (P < 0.05) liver Cu concentrations on d 60 and 90 compared with heifers provided no supplemental Cu. In Exp. 2, average liver Cu concentrations were greater (P = 0.04) for heifers receiving supplemental Cu compared with heifers receiving no Cu; however, all treatments experienced a decrease in liver Cu concentration over the 90-d treatment period. Plasma ceruloplasmin concentrations did not differ in Exp. 1 (P = 0.83) but were greater (P = 0.04) in Exp. 2 for heifers receiving supplemental Cu compared with heifers receiving no Cu. In Exp. 1, voluntary forage DMI was greater (P < 0.05) for heifers provided supplemental Cu, independent of source, compared with heifers provided no Cu. In contrast, voluntary forage DMI was not affected (P > 0.10) by Cu supplementation in Exp. 2. These data imply that CuSO(4) and TBCC are of similar availability when offered to growing beef heifers in both corn- and molasses-based supplements. However, corn- and molasses-based supplements appear to affect Cu metabolism differently. These impacts may affect voluntary forage DMI in growing beef heifers.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate feedlot performance of heifers and calves and the lactational characteristics and carcass composition and quality of heifers while in the single-calf heifer (SCH) system. In Exp. 1, 24 lactating Angus × Holstein heifers were slowly adapted to an 85% concentrate diet, and one-half of the heifers were implanted with Finaplix-H®, both at 11 wk postpartum. Heifer-calf pairs were then placed in feedlot pens, equipped with pinpointer feeding devices, and fed an 85% concentrate diet for 102 d. The control (C) and implanted (I) heifers had similar (P=0.27) daily gains and similar (P=0.30) DMI; however, I heifers consumed 8.9% less (P<0.05) DM as a percentage of BW. Pair efficiency of feed conversion tended to be higher (P<0.09) for I heifers than for C heifers. Hot carcass weight tended to be higher (P<0.10) for the I heifers. Ribeye area was 13% greater (P<0.05) and marbling score was 8.7% lower (P<0.01) for the I heifers than for the C heifers. In Exp. 2, 26 lactating Angus × Simmental heifers were used in the SCH system. Heifer adaptation to a high concentrate diet began 3 to 4 wk prepartum. Two to 3 d postpartum, 16 control (C) and 10 prenatally androgenized (PA) heifer-calf pairs were weighed, and eight C and five PA heifers were implanted with Synovex-H®. They were then placed in feedlot pens equipped with pinpointer feeding devices. By 1 wk postpartum, all heifers were adapted to an 85% concentrate diet and fed until they possessed approximately 1.1 cm s.c. fat cover over the 12th and 13th ribs. Heifers were slaughtered 12 h postweaning. The PA heifers tended to consume more (P<0.11) DM than C heifers. Gain:feed (G:F) was similar (P=0.35) for the C and PA heifers; however, the C heifers tended to have an improved (P<0.08) pair G:F. Heifer G:F and pair G:F were both similar (P=0.53) for the I and nonimplanted heifers. Most carcass measurements were unaffected by treatment; however, the I heifers tended to have higher marbling scores (P<0.07).  相似文献

Two experiments at 2 Nebraska locations evaluated effects of heifer development system on growth and pregnancy rate. In Exp. 1, heifers (n=270, BW=225 ± 2 kg) grazed winter Sandhills range (WR) or west central Nebraska corn residue (CR) with a supplement (0.45 kg/animal; 31% CP; 80 mg·animal(-1)·d(-1) of monensin). In Exp. 2, heifers (n=180, BW = 262 ± 3 kg) grazed eastern Nebraska WR or CR with a supplement (0.45 to 0.90 kg/d; 31% CP; 80 to 160 mg·animal(-1)·d(-1) of monensin). The CR heifers tended to have less (P=0.10) ADG compared with WR heifers before breeding in Exp. 1; however, prebreeding ADG was similar (P=0.77) in Exp. 2. Prebreeding BW, percentage of mature BW at breeding, and pregnancy determination BW were similar (P ≥ 0.14) for CR and WR in both experiments. Percentage of heifers pubertal at breeding, AI conception, and AI pregnancy rate (Exp. 2) and final pregnancy rate in both experiments were also similar (P ≥ 0.27) for CR and WR heifers. Precalving BW, percentage of calves born in the first 21 d, calf birth date, calf birth BW, and dystocia score were all similar (P ≥ 0.21) for CR and WR heifers in both experiments. Cow BW at weaning, calf weaning BW, adjusted 205-d calf BW, and second season pregnancy rates were not affected (P ≥ 0.16) by treatment. Heifer development system did not affect (P ≥ 0.56) the cost of producing 1 pregnant heifer in Exp. 1 or 2. Development on CR may reduce ADG before breeding, but did not affect pregnancy rate. Heifer development using CR or WR postweaning resulted in similar reproductive performance and development cost.  相似文献

Inoculation with Actinomyces pyogenes and administration of prostaglandin (PG)F(2alpha) were used to induce late embryonic mortality (LEM) in heifers (n=8) on Days 30-38 of pregnancy in order to compare the profile for bovine pregnancy associated glycoprotein 1 (PAG1), progesterone and 15-keto-13,14-dihydro-PGF(2alpha) (PGFM). Two pregnant heifers were used as controls. Inoculation into the uterine body caused LEM, as established by ultrasonography in each heifer within 24h of treatment. When the inoculum was injected into the first part of the cervix, LEM occurred in one of two heifers (Heifer A) between 48 and 72 h after treatment. Similarly, PGF(2alpha) treatment caused LEM in three of four heifers. In six of eight heifers, PAG1 started to decrease steadily when it was accompanied by the subsequent death of the embryo. Inoculation through the cervix caused luteolysis in three of four heifers within 6-10 days after induction. After induction of LEM, PGFM concentrations showed a two to 3.8 fold increase in three of four heifers during the following six days, and from that time changed within normal ranges. The results of this study indicate that a PAG1 assay may provide an alternative method to ultrasonography for determining LEM in the cow.  相似文献

通过对华中地区重点监测点郑州市某千头奶牛场监测,制定出能表示该地区奶牛场育成牛产生污染物状况的产污系数。随机选择5头采食正常,健康,体重300 kg左右的育成牛,测定每头育成牛每天饲料采食量及饲料中粗蛋白、磷、铜、锌等指标,每天粪便产生量及粪中全氮、全磷、铜、锌、有机质等指标和每天尿液产生量及尿中COD、氨氮、全氮、全磷、铜、锌等指标,最后得出该奶牛场育成牛的年均产污系数为:氮126.02 g·head^-1·d^-1,磷60.94 g·head^-1·d^-1,有机质1966.18 g·head^-1·d^-1,铜0.143 g·head^-1·d^-1,锌0.953 g·head^-1·d^-1,COD98.908 g·head^-1·d^-1,氨氮1.579 g·head^-1·d^-1。育成牛中COD、有机质、氮、磷、锌等污染物排出量较大,且育成牛中COD、氮、磷、铜、锌、氨氮和有机质等污染物排出量随季节变化有不同变化,一旦饲粮满足育成牛的需要,多余的部分将被排到粪尿中,造成营养物质的流失和污染物产生量的增加。  相似文献

Two Holstein heifers and a cow were diagnosed with White Heifer Disease by ultrasonography. Case 1 was a 14 month-old heifer with aplasia of both sides of the uterine horn. In case 2, a primiparous cow and case 3, an 18 month-old heifer, both showed aplasia of the right uterine horn. Case 2 became pregnant by artificial insemination at ipsilateral ovulatory follicle and corpus luteum in the left ovary, while case 3 became pregnant by embryo transfer at 7 days after oestrus with contralateral corpus luteum in the right ovary.  相似文献

Two hundred ninety-nine Angus-based, nulliparous heifers (253 ± 2 kg initial BW) from 3 production years were utilized to compare traditional postweaning dry lot (DL) development with a more extensive winter grazing system utilizing a combination of corn residue and winter range (EXT). Heifers developed in the DL were offered a common diet after the weaning period for 208 d in yr 1, 194 d in yr 2, and 150 d in yr 3 until breeding. Heifers developed in EXT grazed corn residue for 135 d in yr 1, 106 d in yr 2, and 91 d in yr 3, and then fed in the DL until breeding (yr 1) or grazed dormant winter grass for approximately 60 d before being fed in the DL (yr 2 and 3). All 3 years, heifers were estrus synchronized, with timed AI performed in yr 1. In yr 2 and 3, estrus was detected and those detected in estrus were artificially inseminated approximately 12 h later. Heifers were exposed to bulls 10 d after the last AI for 60 d while grazing summer pasture. During the winter grazing period, EXT heifers gained less (P = 0.01) BW than DL heifers and EXT heifers had lighter (P = 0.02) BW at breeding. Fewer (P < 0.01) EXT heifers reached puberty before breeding. Conception to AI was not different (P = 0.23); however, AI pregnancy rate tended (P = 0.08) to be less in EXT heifers. Final pregnancy rates were not different (P = 0.38) between treatment groups. Although EXT heifers had lighter (P = 0.02) BW at pregnancy diagnosis; however, they did compensate with greater (P = 0.05) ADG after breeding, resulting in similar (P = 0.22) precalving BW. Winter development system did not influence (P > 0.10) percentage of calving in the first 21 d, calf birth date, and calf birth BW, or dystocia score. Pregnancy rate after the second breeding season was not different (P = 0.56) between treatments. Heifer development using extended winter grazing reduced (P < 0.01) the cost of producing a pregnant heifer by $45 compared with DL.  相似文献

Two studies were conducted to evaluate the availability of dietary Cu offered to growing beef cattle consuming molasses-based supplements. In Exp. 1, 24 Braford heifers were assigned randomly to bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum) pastures (two heifers/pasture). Heifers were provided 1.5 kg of TDN and 0.3 kg of supplemental CP/heifer daily using a molasses-cottonseed meal slurry. Three treatments were randomly assigned to pastures (four pastures/treatment), providing 100 mg of supplemental Cu daily in the form of either CuSO4 (inorganic Cu) or organic-Cu. A third treatment offered no supplemental Cu (negative control). Heifer BW was collected at the start and end of the study. Jugular blood and liver samples were collected on d 0, 29, 56, and 84. In Exp. 2, 24 Brahman-crossbred steers were fed the same molasses-cottonseed meal supplement at the same rates used in Exp. 1. Steers were housed in individual pens (15 m2) with free-choice access to stargrass (Cynodon spp.) hay. Four Cu treatments were assigned to individual steers (six pens/treatment) providing 1) 10 ppm of Cu from an organic source; 2) 10 ppm Cu from Tri-basic Cu chloride (TBCC); 3) 30 ppm of Cu from TBCC; or 4) 30 ppm of Cu, a 50:50 ratio of TBCC and organic Cu. Body weights and jugular blood and liver samples were collected on d 0, 24, 48, and 72. In Exp. 1, liver Cu concentrations did not differ between heifers supplemented with inorganic and organic Cu. Each source resulted in increased (P < 0.05) liver Cu concentrations compared with the unsupplemented control. Plasma ceruloplasmin concentrations were higher (P < 0.05) for Cu-supplemented heifers, independent of Cu source. Heifer ADG tended (P = 0.11) to increase with Cu supplementation compared with the unsupplemented control. In Exp. 2, liver Cu was greater (P < 0.05) on d 24, 48, and 72 for steers consuming 30 vs. 10 ppm of Cu. Steers supplemented with organic Cu had lower DMI than steers supplemented with 10 or 30 ppm of TBCC. These data suggest that the inorganic and organic Cu sources evaluated in these studies were of similar availability when offered in molasses supplements. A dietary Cu concentration greater than 10 ppm might be necessary to ensure absorption in beef cattle fed molasses-based supplements.  相似文献

Two experiments evaluated the effects of temperament and acclimation to handling on reproductive performance of Bos taurus beef females. In Exp. 1, 433 multiparous, lactating Angus × Hereford cows were sampled for blood and evaluated for temperament before the breeding season. Cow temperament was assessed by chute score and exit velocity. Chute score was assessed on a 5-point scale according to behavioral responses during chute restraining. Exit score was calculated by dividing exit velocity into quintiles and assigning cows with a score from 1 to 5 (1 = slowest, 5 = fastest cows). Temperament score was calculated by averaging chute and exit scores. Cows were classified for temperament type according to temperament score (≤ 3 = adequate, > 3 = aggressive). Plasma cortisol concentrations were greater (P < 0.01) in cows with aggressive vs. adequate temperament. Cows with aggressive temperament had reduced (P ≤ 0.05) pregnancy and calving rate and tended to have reduced (P = 0.09) weaning rate compared with cows with adequate temperament. Hence, kilogram of calf born per cow was reduced (P = 0.05) and kilogram of calf weaned per cow tended to be reduced (P = 0.08) in aggressive cows. In Exp. 2, 88 Angus × Hereford heifers (initial age = 206 ± 2 d) were weighed (d 0 and 10) and evaluated for temperament score (d 10). On d 11, heifers were ranked by these variables and assigned to receive or not (control) an acclimation treatment. Acclimated heifers were processed through a handling facility 3 times weekly for 4 wk (d 11 to 39; Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays), whereas control heifers remained undisturbed on pasture. Heifer puberty status, evaluated via plasma progesterone concentrations, was assessed on d 0 and 10, d 40 and 50, 70 and 80, 100 and 110, 130 and 140, 160 and 170, and 190 and 200. Blood samples collected on d 10 and 40 were also analyzed for plasma concentrations of cortisol and haptoglobin. Temperament score was assessed again on d 40 and d 200. Acclimated heifers had reduced (P = 0.01) concentrations of cortisol and haptoglobin on d 40 and reduced (P = 0.02) exit velocity on d 200 compared with control heifers. Puberty was hastened in acclimated heifers compared with control (P = 0.01). Results from this study indicate that B. taurus beef cows with aggressive temperament have impaired reproductive performance compared with cohorts with adequate temperament, whereas acclimation to human handling after weaning hastens reproductive development of replacement heifers.  相似文献

Heifer and steer progeny of 2-yr-old first-cross (F1) heifers and 3- to 6-yr-old F1 cows, from Hereford dams and five sire breeds, were evaluated for postweaning feedlot growth and carcass composition. Breeds of sire of dam were Angus (A), Red Poll (RP), Tarentaise (T), Simmental (Sm), and Pinzgauer (P). Calves from 2-yr-old heifers were sired by Shorthorn, and calves from 3- to 6-yr-old dams were sired by Charolais. Breed of sire of dam was significant (P less than .05 to P less than .01) for total gain and final weight for female progeny from 2-yr-old dams. At all weights, Sm, P, and T ranked above A and RP. Progeny of A, P, Sm, and T F1 2-yr-old dams were not significantly different but were higher (P less than .05) than RP heifers in total feedlot gain. Breed of sire of dam was significant (P less than .05) for carcass weight and longissimus muscle area; T ranked highest and RP lowest. Breed was not significant for any growth traits of steer progeny of 2-yr-old dams. Breed was significant for marbling score; A ranked highest and exceeded (P less than .01) both RP and Sm steers. Breed was significant (P less than .05) for most growth traits in the heifer progeny of the 3- to 6-yr-old dams bred to Charolais sires. Heifer calves of the Sm group were heavier (P less than .05) than all other groups for most weights and total gain. For total gain, P and T were intermediate and A and RP lowest. For heifer carcass traits from 3- to 6-yr-old dams, breed was significant (P less than .05 to P less than .01) for carcass weight, longissimus muscle area, percentage of cutability, and estimated kidney, heart, and pelvic fat. Heifers from Sm-sired dams were heavier (P less than .05) than those from all other groups but ranked second to heifers from P for percentage of cutability. Marbling scores of RP heifer carcasses ranked highest of all groups. Breed was not significant (P greater than .05) for any of the weights or gains in steer progeny of 3- to 6-yr-old dams; however, the Sm and P groups ranked above A and RP for all feedlot test weights.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Interrelationships among milk production, dam-calf feed efficiency to weaning, and other biological traits were evaluated on 411 first-calf heifers and their calves. Individual feed intakes were measured in a drylot environment for a 1-yr period until weaning of the first calf. Heifer breed types included crossbred Angus-Hereford, Simmental-Hereford, and Tarentaise-Hereford produced in two-breed rotational crossbreeding systems, F1 Salers-Hereford and straightbred Hereford. Production efficiency was defined as cumulative feed ME consumed by the dam-calf pair during the year divided by calf weaning weight. Milk production potential seemed to be unrelated to cow size, adjusted for breed-group effects. Lactational feed energy was increased for dams of increased milk production potential but not enough to offset the increased production of calf weaning weight in terms of production efficiency. Results indicated that increased levels of milk production of heifers were associated with improved production efficiency to weaning. However, the incremental improvement in efficiency per unit of increased milk was less for each additional unit of milk, within the range evaluated. These results are applicable to first-calf heifers that have not yet reached peak age for maximum milk production.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of feeding rumen-protected CLA during the early growing period on physical and chemical beef properties in young Simmental heifers. A total of 36 heifers (5 mo old; initial BW 185 ± 21 kg) were fed 250 g of different rumen-protected fats daily for 16 wk in 1 of 3 treatment groups: 250 g of a CLA-free control fat; 100 g of a CLA fat containing 2.4% of cis-9,trans-11 CLA and 2.1% of trans-10,cis-12 CLA and 150 g control fat; or 250 g of the CLA fat. Heifer growth performance variables as well as carcass weight, classification (conformation and fatness), and weights of organs and fat depots were not affected (P > 0.05) by CLA supplementation. Concentration of trans-10,cis-12 CLA in tissues (LM and subcutaneous fat) was dose-dependently increased (P < 0.01) by CLA supplementation, whereas that of cis-9,trans-11 CLA in these tissues did not differ (P > 0.05) between groups. The ratio of SFA to MUFA was increased (P < 0.01) in tissues of CLA-fed heifers compared with control heifers. Concentration of α-tocopherol in LM was greater (P = 0.01) in heifers of the 2 CLA groups than in control heifers. Other quality characteristics such as drip loss during storage, cooking loss, intramuscular fat content, and color variables in LM did not differ (P > 0.05) between groups. In conclusion, the present study demonstrates that feeding rumen-protected CLA during the early growing period changes tissue fatty acid composition but does not influence beef quality variables. Performance variables and carcass traits in young heifers, unlike in pigs and laboratory animals, are not influenced by CLA feeding.  相似文献

High fat range supplement (HFRS) and HFRS with lipid from soybean soapstock (HFRS-SPH; Consolidated Nutrition, Omaha, NE) were compared with a corn-soybean meal supplement (control). In Exp. 1, primiparous cows were individually fed the control supplement (n = 12), HFRS (n = 12), or HFRS-SPH (n = 10) for 62 ± 2 d prepartum. Heifer body condition score pre- and postpartum did not differ (P=0.78) among groups. Milk production was not influenced (P=0.15) by source of supplement. Somatic cell counts, however, tended to be less (P=0.07) in HFRS-supplemented heifers than in heifers fed the control supplement. At birth, calf body temperature (P=0.8), vigor (P=0.7), and BW (P=0.6), as well as BW gain through 90 d postpartum (P=0.6), did not differ among prepartum supplementation treatments. Plasma concentrations of linoleic acid were greater (P=0.02) in fat-supplemented heifers at 30 d prepartum and at calving compared with heifers on the control treatment; however, concentrations of plasma linoleic acid returned to levels comparable with those in control heifers by 30 d postpartum. Neither number of cows cycling by 90 d postpartum (P=0.15) nor length of the postpartum interval (P=0.25) differed among treatment groups. In Exp. 2, multiparous cows were pen-fed the control supplement (n = 49), HFRS (n = 47), or HFRS-SPH (n = 49) for 59 ± 2 d prepartum. Prior to parturition, cows fed the control supplement had better body condition scores (5.8 ± 0.1; P=0.004) than cows fed either commercial supplement (5.4 ± 0.1). Calf performance (P=0.7) and conception rates (P= 0.5) did not differ among treatments. Productivity of cows and calves was not improved with provision of supplemental fat prepartum.  相似文献

Weather conditions in northern Illinois favored infection of pasture grasses with Claviceps purpurea. A herd of 52 Holstein heifers selectively grazed the seedheads of an orchard grassbromegrass pasture infected with C purpurea and were poisoned. Peptide alkaloids were found in the sclerotia. Clinical signs of intoxication included lameness, edema of the hind limbs, epilation, areas of skin necrosis, and diarrhea. Pathologic findings included myopachynsis of arterioles in the deep dermal areas, lungs, kidney, spleen, submucosa of small intestines and cerebral cortex, focal cracks on the hoofs, and multifocal areas of detachment of the hoof wall. Of the 52 heifers, 3 died on the farm, 1 was euthanatized, and 3 were sold. The remaining heifers conceived without difficulty, and subsequent calvings were uncomplicated.  相似文献

In dose titration trials beef heifers received depot-formulated melengestrol acetate (DEPO-MGA) in single s.c. ear injections to determine effects on performance and pregnancy inhibition. In a 112-d feedlot trial, 105 heifers were assigned to light, medium and heavy weight blocks on five treatments: dietary MGA (.5 mg.hd-1.d-1), control (no MGA) or DEPO-MGA on d 1 at .5, 1.0 or 1.5 ml/hd (30, 60 or 90 mg MGA/hd, respectively). A high-energy cracked corn diet was fed to all heifers ad libitum. At d 56 and d 112, ADG and feed/gain were not affected (P greater than .05) by dietary MGA or DEPO-MGA treatments, although dietary MGA tended to increase 112-d ADG (1.67 vs 1.58 kg) compared with controls. In a pasture trial, 100 beef heifers were assigned by weight to five treatments: control (no MGA) or DEPO-MGA injected on d 1 at .5, 1.0, 1.5 or 2.0 ml/hd (30, 60, 90 or 120 mg MGA/hd, respectively). Heifers were pastured as a single herd and were exposed to fertile bulls from d 7 to d 181. Weights and pregnancy data were recorded at d 62, 90, 134, 181 and 225. Heifer ADG was not affected (P greater than .05) by DEPO-MGA treatment at any weighing date. By d 90, 90% of control heifers were pregnant, and 100% were pregnant by d 134. Pregnancy inhibition rates of 90% to 100% for each DEPO-MGA treatment at d 62, 90 and 134 were higher (P less than .01) than those in control heifers. Pregnancy was inhibited in 90% of heifers on 60-mg and 90-mg DEPO-MGA treatments through d 181, and in 95% of heifers on the 120 mg DEPO-MGA treatment through d 225.  相似文献

A grazing experiment was conducted to assess the effects of wild-type endophyte-infected (E+) tall fescue consumption and elevated ambient temperatures on intravaginal temperatures, plasma lipid peroxidation, and glutathione redox of peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Angus heifers (n = 34) were allotted by BW to 4 blocks consisting of E+ and endophyte-free (E-) fescue pastures. Monthly, in June, July, and August, temperature loggers were fixed into blank controlled internal drug releasers and inserted into a subsample of heifers (n = 16) for 2 d. After 48 h, heifers were weighed, and blood (30 mL) was collected via jugular venipuncture. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were isolated for analysis of glutathione peroxidase activity, glutathione reductase activity, and reduced:oxidized glutathione. Plasma malondialdehyde was evaluated as a marker of lipid peroxidation, and whole blood Se concentration was determined. Serum prolactin was assayed after the grazing period. Heifer ADG was greatest in August and least in July (P < 0.001). In August, heifers grazing E+ fescue exhibited greater (P < 0.05) afternoon intravaginal temperatures and temperature fluctuations than heifers grazing E- fescue. In July and August, all heifers had greater afternoon temperatures (P < 0.02) and less reduced:oxidized glutathione (P < 0.0001) than in June. Glutathione reductase activity of all heifers was greater in June (P = 0.03) than in July. Similarly, all heifers exhibited decreased glutathione peroxidase activity (P < 0.0008) in July, whereas whole blood Se was reduced (P < 0.0001) in July and August. No treatment or date effects were detected for malondialdehyde, but serum prolactin was reduced at the end of the grazing period (P = 0.008) in heifers stocked on E+ fescue. Using these markers, differences in oxidative stress were not detected between heifers consuming E+ fescue and those consuming E- fescue. Date effects indicating altered glutathione redox and enzyme activity may have been related to heat stress and nutritional limitations.  相似文献
