An 18-month-old female neutered domestic short hair cat was examined because of marked polydipsia and stunted growth following head trauma when it was 8 weeks old. Diagnostic evaluation revealed hyposthenuric urine, low concentrations of thyroid hormone and undetectable thyroid stimulating hormone concentrations which did not rise following thyroid releasing hormone administration. Lateral radiographs of the left and right tibiae revealed incomplete mineralisation of the greater tubercle and open physis. An almost empty sella turcica and a greatly reduced pituitary were visible on magnetic resonance images of the brain. A presumptive diagnosis of secondary hypothyroidism and central diabetes insipidus following head trauma was made.  相似文献

Partial deficiency of antidiuretic hormone in a cat   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Marked polydipsia and polyuria developed subsequent to trauma in a 1 1/2-year-old male Abyssinian cat. Diabetes insipidus was suspected, inasmuch as intramuscualr vasopressin administration resulted in amelioration of polydipsia and polyuria. However, hypertonic (3%) saline solution given intravneously resulted in anuria, an indication of antidiuretic hormone activity. Polyuria and polydipsia were abolished by oral chlorpropamide therapy, which was indirect evidence for partial deficiency of antidiuretic hormone.  相似文献

Puppies from two litters of dogs were found to have severe polyuria and polydipsia. Four of the dogs were investigated by means of clinical examination, haematological and biochemical analysis, and urinalysis. A modified water deprivation response test was also performed in two of the dogs. Renal changes on postmortem examination in three of the dogs were found to be consistent with renal dysplasia. A possible explanation for the finding of hyposthenuria and the extreme polyuria and polydipsia in association with renal dysplasia may be lack of response to antidiuretic hormone owing to anomalous maturation of the renal tubules. Six other puppies from the two litters of dogs did not show any clinical signs of polyuria and polydipsia, although postmortem examination in one of them also revealed renal dysplasia. The clinical features of renal dysplasia may therefore vary greatly between individuals.  相似文献

A 1-year-old neutered male domestic shorthair cat presented with a 4-week history of polydipsia that began immediately after an 8 metre fall. Trauma-induced central diabetes insipidus was suspected on the basis of the identification of hyposthenuria, normal haematology and serum biochemistry profile and unremarkable abdominal ultrasound examination. Failure to concentrate urine with water deprivation followed by production of hypersthenuric urine with administration of the synthetic antidiuretic hormone, Deamino-8-D-arginine vasopressin (DDAVP), confirmed the diagnosis of central diabetes insipidus. Treatment via conjunctival administration of DDAVP failed to attenuate the polydipsia, however, resolution of polydipsia was achieved with subcutaneous administration of DDAVP and the cat remains eudipsic with twice daily subcutaneous DDAVP administration 17 months after diagnosis.  相似文献

A 14‐year‐old Swiss Warmblood gelding was presented with chronic severe polyuria, polydipsia and weight loss. At the time of admission, water intake was 240 l/day. On rectal examination, a large mass was identified in the left dorsal abdominal quadrant, which was shown to originate from the left kidney by transabdominal ultrasonographic examination. Unilateral nephrectomy via flank incision was performed under general anaesthesia. Histopathological examination of the tumour revealed a papillary renal adenocarcinoma. Successful outcome and survival was documented 13 months after surgery. Severe polyuria and polydipsia should be considered as major clinical signs for renal carcinoma in horses, which can be successfully treated with unilateral nephrectomy if no signs of metastatic spread are evident.  相似文献

A 13-year-old, crossbreed dog presented with a history of recent onset polydipsia, progressive lethargy, weakness and reduced appetite. Blood tests showed raised concentrations of alkaline phosphatase and alanine aminotransferase with marginally low serum potassium. There was a leucocytosis with a mature neutrophilia and no eosinophils. Endocrine tests showed a normal aldosterone concentration and an exaggerated adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation test, consistent with a diagnosis of hyperadrenocorticism (HAC). A diagnosis of adrenal-dependent HAC was made, based on the presence of a calcified mass involving the left adrenal gland, and hepatomegaly, on radiography and ultrasonography. The owners declined surgical adrenalectomy. Medical management with trilostane rapidly improved the clinical signs and normalised the serum chemistry. ACTH stimulation tests showed an improvement in post-ACTH cortisol concentrations and were used to make dose adjustments where necessary. At the time of writing, no adverse side effects had been seen and the dog remained well after 80 weeks of treatment.  相似文献

Diabetes mellitus (DM) was diagnosed in a 6-year-old neutered male ferret with polyuria/polydipsia, symmetrical alopecia, and weight loss. Laboratory tests revealed severe hyperglycemia, glucosuria, and increased steroid hormone profile. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a bilateral enlargement of the adrenal glands. Significant clinical improvement was achieved with insulin- and leuprolide acetate-based therapy. After 2 months of therapy, the ferret showed a severe ketoacidosis, and the owner decided to euthanize the animal. Histological findings revealed carcinoma of the left adrenal cortex and cortical hyperplasia of the right adrenal gland. Moderate, chronic, and active pancreatitis with a marked decrease in the number of β-cells was also present. This is the first reported case of type 1 DM associated with hyperadrenocorticism and chronic pancreatitis in a ferret.

A 9-year-old male Boxer with signs of lethargy, weight gain, polyuria, polydipsia, eosinopaenia and lymphopaenia was diagnosed as having hyperadrenocorticism. Concurrent central diabetes insipidus was diagnosed using a water deprivation test and antidiuretic hormone response test. A contrast radiographic technique was used to outline a pituitary mass. A chromophobe adenoma and secondary hypothyroidism were found on post-mortem examination.  相似文献

A 10-year-old female Dachshund was presented with a history of mammary masses, slight lethargy, polyuria, and polydipsia. Physical examination findings included masses involving the first, second, and fourth mammary glands of the left side. The mandibular, axillary, and right popliteal lymph nodes were mildly enlarged. Serum chemistry results included hypercalcemia (13.9 mg/dL, reference interval 8.0-11.5 mg/dL). Although intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) concentration (1.05 pmol/L) was below the reference interval (2-13 pmol/L), PTH-related protein (PTHrP) concentration was markedly increased (9.40 pmol/L, reference value < 2 pmol/L). The masses were surgically removed, and the histopathologic diagnosis was complex mammary carcinoma. Three weeks after surgery, serum total calcium concentration had decreased to 10.5 mg/dL. Resolution of the hypercalcemia and clinical signs supported a diagnosis of humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy associated with mammary gland carcinoma.  相似文献

This report describes multiple endocrine neoplasia in a dog, which is a rare hereditary disorder characterized by the presence of two or more neoplasms of different endocrine tissues within a patient. A 14 yr old dog was evaluated for polyuria/polydipsia, polyphagia, and abdominal enlargement. Adrenal-dependent hyperadrenocorticism with concomitant left thyroid enlargement and a presumed abdominal metastatic lesion were diagnosed by an adrenocorticotropic hormone stimulation test, ultrasonography, and computed tomography. Trilostane therapy was initiated and resolved the clinical signs for 2 yr at which time the dog presented with left testicular enlargement. The dog was euthanized and was diagnosed with adrenocortical carcinoma, thyroid carcinoma, an abdominal mass compatible with a metastatic lymph node, and bilateral interstitial cell testicular adenomas. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report to describe the concomitant association of these types of endocrine neoplasms in a dog. The concomitant presence of these neoplasms could represent a potential variant of multiple endocrine neoplasia; however, the presence of the interstitial cell testicular adenomas may have only been an incidental finding. If any of these tumors are diagnosed, veterinarians should perform a thorough clinical assessment to evaluate for the presence of additional endocrine neoplasms or hyperplasia.  相似文献

Congenital sinus cyst in a foal   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A rhesus monkey developed psychogenic polydipsia after a change in feeding regimen was instituted. Hyposthenuria, hyponatremia, hypochloremia, and an abnormal calculated plasma osmolality were found. Water deprivation testing and administration of antidiuretic hormone indicated that renal medullary solute depletion had resulted from the prolonged polyuria. Restricted water consumption resulted in resolution of the electrolyte abnormalities and restored ability to excrete concentrated urine.  相似文献

Polyuria and polydipsia (PUPD) occur frequently in dogs and may be caused by a variety of endocrine, metabolic, and renal disturbances. The studies described in this PhD Thesis, which was defended in January 2004 in Utrecht, investigated the role of the antidiuretic hormone vasopressin (VP) in the pathogenesis of different forms of canine polyuria. Experiments in healthy dogs demonstrated that the ranges of urine specific gravity and urine osmolality are much larger than previously thought. A water deprivation test is not required in all polyuric dogs, because serial measurements of urine osmolality may already lead to the diagnosis of primary polydipsia, in some cases. In dogs with primary polydipsia a wide variation in VP responses to hypertonic stimulation can be found, including a hyperresponse, a hyporesponse, and a non-linear response. The significance of the VP response to hypertonic saline infusion as the 'gold standard' for a diagnosis of canine polyuria is discussed. In the dog, VP is secreted in a pulsatile fashion with a wide variation in the number of VP pulses, VP pulse duration, and VP pulse amplitude and height. The occurrence of spontaneous VP pulses may severely hamper the interpretation of the curve describing the relationship between plasma osmolality and plasma VP concentration during osmotic stimulation. A radioimmunoassay to measure the VP-dependent water channel aquaporin-2 (AQP2) in urine was developed in dogs. In healthy dogs, urinary AQP2 excretion closely reflects changes in collecting duct exposure to VP. Measurement of urinary AQP2 excretion in polyuric dogs may be helpful to distinguish between central diabetes insipidus, nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, and primary polydipsia.  相似文献

Two experiments (Spring and Fall) were conducted in ovariectomized ewes to determine changes in pituitary hormone secretion immediately after pituitary stalk-transection. Ewes underwent either pituitary stalk-transection (SS), sham-transection (SH) or administration of anesthesia only (AO). Stalk-transected, but not sham-operated or anesthetized ewes had polyuria and polydipsia for 7 to 14 days after surgery. Concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and prolactin were measured in peripheral blood samples collected every 10 minutes for a six-hour period. Results were comparable for each season. During the six hours following surgery or removal from anesthesia, concentrations of LH declined in all ewes, but more slowly in SS ewes. No differences in patterns or mean concentrations of FSH were observed. Immediately after surgery, concentrations of prolactin were elevated, then declined in SH and SS ewes. The decrease was greater in SH than SS ewes. Data are consonant with the view that hypothalamic inhibition as well as LHRH stimulation regulate gonadotropin release by the pituitary.  相似文献

Idiopathic neurogenic diabetes insipidus in a cat   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
SUMMARY A 5-year-old, domestic long-haired cat was presented for examination because of polydipsia, polyuria and inappropriate urination of 3 months' duration. Neurogenic diabetes insipidus was diagnosed, based on hyposthenuria with failure to concentrate urine in response to water deprivation and positive response to antidiuretic hormone administration. Treatment with hydrochlorothiazide or chlorpropamide orally gave inadequate antidiuresis, but response to injections of vasopressin tannate in oil was sufficient for satisfactory management.  相似文献

A modified water-deprivation test was performed on 12 polyuric and 4 clinically normal dogs. Immediately after maximal urine osmolality had been achieved with water deprivation, antidiuretic hormone was injected to test further renal concentrating ability. The test provided accurate diagnosis of severe hypothalamic-neurohypophyseal diabetes insipidus in 3 dogs, partial diabetes insipidus in 2 dogs, and primary (psychogenic) polydipsia in 2 dogs. Five polyuric dogs with hyperadreno corticism had a response to the modified water-deprivation test similar to that of dogs with partial diabetes indipidus.  相似文献

A 2-year-old, castrated male, mixed-breed dog presented with a 1-month history of red eyes and intermittent vomiting and a 2-week history of polyuria and polydipsia. Bilateral anterior uveitis and active chorioretinitis in the left eye were found on ophthalmic examination. Complete blood counts demonstrated evidence of an increased red blood cell mass. Thoracic and abdominal radiographs, abdominal ultrasonography, and Doppler echocardiography were unremarkable. Serum erythropoietin level was low-normal, consistent with a diagnosis of polycythemia vera. Resolution of all systemic and ocular signs occurred, and remission was achieved following phlebotomy and treatment with oral hydroxyurea.  相似文献

Primary hyperparathyroidism was diagnosed in two German shepherd pups from a litter of four females. Clinical signs were apparent by two weeks of age and included stunted growth, muscular weakness, and polydipsia/polyuria. Radiography revealed diffuse reduction in bone density. Both pups had marked hypercalcemia, hypophosphatemia, increased plasma immunoreactive parathyroid hormone concentrations and increased fractional clearance of inorganic phosphate in the urine. Intravenous infusion of one affected pup with calcium gluconate failed to suppress the plasma concentration of immunoreactive parathyroid hormone, suggesting autonomous secretion of parathyroid hormone. Necropsy of the other pup at eight weeks of age revealed diffuse hyperplasia of parathyroid chief cells, nodular hyperplasia of thyroid C-cells, skeletal alterations consistent with fibrous osteodystrophy, hypercalcemic nephropathy, and extensive mineralization of the lungs and gastric mucosa. The dam and sire were half sibs. One male pup from a previous litter of six had developed similar clinical signs and radiographic lesions, suggesting autosomal recessive inheritance. This is the first report of hereditary primary hyperparathyroidism in domestic animals, a disease which may be analogous to hereditary neonatal primary hyperparathyroidism in children.  相似文献

A domestic shorthair cat presented with a progressive history of polydipsia, lingual swelling and ulceration. The tongue was firm and grossly enlarged with associated regional lymphadenopathy. Surgical biopsies revealed lymphoma of the tongue. Following the procedure, the cat developed respiratory distress and was subsequently euthanased. Necropsy confirmed the diagnosis of lingual lymphoma and also identified lymphoma within the left kidney. This is the first report of lymphoma within the feline tongue in the literature.  相似文献
