Percentage O2 and CO2 were measured in the air in environmentally controlled commercial poultry pens (altitude approximately 300 m) containing broiler or roaster chickens 14 to 56 days of age. Outside air (mean of 10 samples) measured 20.85% O2 and 0.041% CO2. Air in the pens had significantly lower O2 and higher CO2 than outside air; however, air in 25 pens with a high incidence of ascites (mean 20.50% O2, 0.264% CO2) was not different from the air in 25 pens with a low incidence of ascites (mean 20.49% O2, 0.319% CO2). The lowest pen O2 was 20.20%, which would not cause reduced hemoglobin saturation (percent oxygen) of the arterial blood of normal chickens.  相似文献

Primary and secondary immune responses to Newcastle disease virus (NDV) was evaluated in chickens infected with infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) at one and 28 days of age. The geometric mean primary hemagglutination-inhibition antibody titers (GMT) of chickens infected with IBDV at one day of age was significantly lower (P less than or equal to 0.01) than those infected at 28 days of age. Infection with IBDV had no influence on secondary immune response to NDV. The effect of IBDV infection at one day of age on the cell-mediated immunity of chickens was evaluated by skin allograft acceptance or survival time. There was no significant difference between the percentage of grafts accepted in IBDV infected and noninfected control chickens. However, the mean graft survival time in the IBDV infected chickens was significantly longer (P less than or equal to 0.05) than those in the control group. This suggested a suppression of cell-mediated immunity due to IBDV infection.  相似文献

Electrocardiograms of chickens infected with viscerotropic velogenic Newcastle disease virus (NDV) or virulent avian influenza virus (AIV) were characterized and compared. The ECG were monitored by radiotelemetry and were recorded twice daily before virus infection and during the course of the infection. Thirteen lead II intervals, segments, and amplitudes were measured and analyzed. The ECG of NDV-infected chickens were characterized by lengthened (P less than or equal to 0.05) ST segments and increased (P less than or equal to 0.05) P amplitudes. The ECG of AIV-infected chickens were characterized by lengthened (P less than or equal to 0.05) RS intervals, ST segments, TP intervals, and PR segments and by increased (P less than or equal to 0.05) P amplitudes. The TP intervals and PR segments of ECG of AIV-infected chickens were significantly (P less than or equal to 0.05) longer than those of NDV-infected chickens. The pronounced conduction delays indicated in the ECG of AIV-infected chickens may have diagnostic importance.  相似文献

The accuracy of a pulse oximeter was evaluated over a wide range of arterial oxygen and carbon dioxide tensions, using 2 probes (finger probe and ear probe) and 2 monitoring sites (tongue and tail) in anesthetized dogs. The arterial oxygen saturation of hemoglobin (SaO2) measured directly with a multiwavelength spectrophotometer was compared with saturation estimated by pulse oximetry (SpO2). Linear regression analysis of the pooled data from 399 simultaneous measurements of SpO2 and SaO2 indicated a highly significant correlation of SpO2 with SaO2 (r = 0.97; P less than or equal to 0.0001). Although the mean difference (+/- SD) between SpO2 and SaO2 for pooled data was small (-0.06 +/- 6.8%), SpO2 tended to underestimate high SaO2 values (greater than or equal to 70%) and to overestimate low SaO2 values (less than 70%). When SaO2 values were greater than or equal to 70%, the ear probe applied to the tail was less accurate (produced a significantly greater SpO2-SaO2 difference) than the ear probe on the tongue, or the finger probe at either site. When SaO2 values were less than or equal to 50%, the finger probe applied at the tail was more accurate (produced significantly smaller SpO2-SaO2 differences) than the ear probe at either site. When SaO2 values were less than or equal to 70%, high arterial carbon dioxide tension (greater than or equal to 60 mm of Hg) was associated with greater overestimation of SaO2.  相似文献

The probability of survival of chickens following a challenge dose of the X-73 strain of Pasteurella multocida was calculated based on enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) titer. Chickens were vaccinated subcutaneously with the Clemson University strain of P. multocida. On days 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, 14, 21, and 28 post-vaccination, 10 vaccinated chickens and 5 unvaccinated controls were selected at random, bled, and then challenged with 2000 colony-forming units of X-73. The ELISA titers to P. multocida vaccination and responses to challenge were recorded. A logistic procedure predicted probability of survival related to ELISA titer. The ELISA titer and survival were highly correlated. A flock profile for each day of challenge was developed based on a probability of survival (PS) at the following levels: PS less than 25%, 25% less than or equal to PS less than 50%, 50% less than or equal to PS less than 75%, and PS greater than or equal to 75%. The antibody response of the chickens through 28 days post-vaccination demonstrated a classic response to vaccination.  相似文献

Packed cell volume (PCV) reference intervals were established for use in diagnosing anemia and polycythemia in young broiler chickens. Blood samples were collected from one hundred twenty 3-to-49-day-old clinically healthy conventionally reared broiler chickens. PCVs were determined and analyzed. PCVs regressed significantly (P less than 0.025) on age, which shows that neonatal physiologic anemia occurs in broiler chickens, as well as in mammals and specific-pathogen-free (SPF) chickens. The definition for anemia in broiler chicks varies with age. We defined anemia as a PCV less than or equal to 26%, 29%, 33%, 32%, 33%, 33%, 31%, and 28% for broiler chickens, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, and 49 days old, respectively. We define polycythemia as a PCV greater than or equal to 42%, 43%, 41%, 40%, 42%, 42%, 41%, and 40% for broiler chickens 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, and 49 days old, respectively. Otherwise, broiler chickens have PCVs within established reference intervals. Results provide guidelines for detecting anemia and polycythemia in young broiler chickens of various ages.  相似文献

Infection of commercially reared white leghorn and white rock hens with adenovirus 127 was associated with decreases in total egg production, external egg quality, egg weight (P less than 0.01), and eggshell thickness (P less than 0.01). The egg-production and egg-quality disturbances were transient, and production returned to normal approximately 4 weeks postinfection. Infection of white leghorns with a hemagglutinating adenovirus isolated from Missouri ducks did not adversely affect egg production, external egg quality, or eggshell thickness, but it was associated with decreased egg weight (P less than 0.01). Prior infection with the duck adenovirus prevented the adverse egg-production effects of adenovirus 127 infection. Mean hemagglutination-inhibition antibody titers of chickens infected with adenovirus 127 or with duck adenovirus ranged from 1:588 to 1:10809, and mean titers of uninfected chickens did not exceed 1:2.  相似文献

The prevalence of Arkansas (Ark)-type infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) in Delmarva peninsula broiler-type chickens was determined. The immunity of 5-to-11-week-old commercial broilers was evaluated by intraocular inoculation with Ark-type DPI strain (Ark DPI) challenge virus and collection of tracheal swabbings 5 days later. Serum Ark-type antibody titers were obtained using the virus-neutralization test. Eighty-five flocks were tested from January to August 1981. Nearly 60% of the flocks had substantial (greater than or equal to 70%) local immunity of the upper respiratory tract. Twenty-two percent had intermediate (50-69%) and 19% of the flocks had low (less than or equal to 40%) levels of local immunity. Serum antibody titers generally agreed with challenge results. In addition, high Ark-type IBV neutralizing-antibody titers were found in 16 Delmarva broiler breeder flocks. Seven current IBV field isolates were characterized for antigenic similarity to Ark DPI. Four isolates contained Ark antigen(s) based on significant neutralization in virus-neutralization tests and on substantial immunity to challenge afforded by Ark DPI virus immunization. Three isolates did not appear to contain Ark antigen(s). Immunization of chickens with Ark DPI virus afforded substantial protection against Connecticut- and homologous-type virus challenge, partial immunity (63%) against JMK, and no protection against the Massachusetts 41 strain of IBV.  相似文献

A skin test to assess T-cell mediated delayed hypersensitivity (DH) and cutaneous basophil hypersensitivity (CBH) was evaluated in the interdigital skin of young chickens. Three-day-old chickens were sensitized with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and the DH reaction was elicited in the interdigital skin in 10-, 17-, 24-, and 31-day-old chickens by intradermal injection of tuberculin. Cutaneous basophil hypersensitivity was elicited in the interdigital skin of 10- and 14-day-old chickens by a single intradermal injection of phytohemagglutinin-P (200 micrograms). The effect of immunosuppression on the results of interdigital skin test for DH and for CBH was evaluated in chickens that were treated with dexamethasone daily for 4 days before testing. The DH reaction, as indicated by a significant (P less than 0.01) increase in the mean interdigital skin thickness, was detectable in 10-day-old chickens and was consistently evident in 17-, 24-, and 31-day-old chickens. The DH response in the interdigital skin of 24-day-old chickens was comparable with that elicited in the standard wattle test. The CBH reaction, as indicted by a significant increase (P less than 0.005) in skin thickness, was evident in the interdigital skin of 10- and 14-day-old chickens. Treatment with dexamethasone significantly decreased (P less than 0.01) the DH and CBH reactions. Results of the study indicated that the interdigital skin test may be used to evaluate normal and suppressed cell-mediated DH and CBH reactions in chickens as young as 10 and 14 days old.  相似文献

Nutritional balance studies were conducted to determine the effect of Eimeria acervulina infection on the retention of nutrients and the efficiency of utilization of protein and energy in the diet during the course of intestinal coccidiosis in chickens. Both light and electronmicroscopic studies were conducted to elucidate the pathogenesis of fat malabsorption in the infected chickens. The infection with E. acervulina during the acute phase of the disease (day 4 to day 8 postinfection) caused a reduction (P smaller than 0.01) in the retention of percent protein, percent ether extract and percent gross energy of the diet with a concomitant increase (P smaller than 0.01) in the concentration of ether extract and gross energy of the excreta. The metabolizable energy value of the diet was also depressed during this phase. During the recovery phase of the disease (day 9 to day 13 postinfection) infected chickens voided excreta containing a slightly greater concentration of ether extract when compared to the controls but differences in the retention of percent protein and percent gross energy were no longer observed. An increased retention of percent phosphorus also occured during the recovery phase. Studies involving the carcass composition revealed that the efficiency of utilization of protein and metabolizable energy of the diet for tissue deposition was reduced (P smaller than 0.05) during day 0 to day 8 postinfection but only the efficiency of metabolizable energy utilization was found to be depressed (P smaller than 0.05) when data for day 0 to day 14 postinfection were analyzed. Both light and electronmicroscopic studies of the duodenal villi of infected chickens during day 5 to day 6 postinfection revealed accumulation of large globules of fat in the villus epithelial cells parasitized by the gammonts of E. acervulina indicating a possible blackade of "fat exit" from these cells.  相似文献

Immunogenicity of an oil-emulsified Escherichia coli (serotype O1) pili vaccine was evaluated in chickens. Chickens were vaccinated with 116 micrograms or 29 micrograms of pili protein and challenged with the homologous E. coli via the posterior thoracic air sac. Unvaccinated chickens were challenged to serve as positive controls or left unchallenged to serve as negative controls. Vaccinated chickens were protected against challenge because they suffered low or no mortality; had mild gross lesions in air sacs, pericardial sacs, and livers, and the scored values were significantly (P less than or equal to 0.05) lower than those in the positive controls; and eliminated E. coli from tissues more efficiently than the positive controls.  相似文献

A prospective study to survey for the presence of parvovirus-like virus (PVLV; so-called chick anemia agent) antibody in broiler breeder pullets in Georgia, North Carolina, and Florida was conducted by collecting serum samples from 52 breeder flocks that ranged in age from 1 day to 55 weeks old. Results indicated that PVLV infection was widespread. Ninety-eight percent (51/52) of chicken flocks and 62% (530/861) of chickens had PVLV antibody. Rates of antibody-positive chickens among flocks ranged from 0% to 100% and averaged 76%. Upon initial examination, the percentages of chickens positive for PVLV appeared evenly distributed with respect to several convenient age groups and geographic locations. However, compared with young chickens (less than or equal to 19 weeks old), markedly significantly lower proportions of positives were present among chickens more than 19 weeks old (P = 0.00001) or chickens 30 weeks old or more (P = 0.000004). Also, there were significant (F = 7.7, df = 3/827, P less than 0.001) differences among the rates of PVLV antibody in chickens among various companies. The relatively high rate of PVLV antibody among broiler breeder chickens helps explain the low incidence of clinical disease among their offspring.  相似文献

Intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured in 73 eyes of 37 clinically normal cats with 2 applanation tonometers (Tono-Pen and Mackay-Marg) and the Schiotz indentation tonometer, using the 5.5- and 7.5-g weights. Statistically, the Tono-Pen tonometer underestimated IOP compared with the values obtained by use of the Mackay-Marg tonometer (P less than 0.0001) and the Schiotz tonometer, with either weight and either the human (P less than 0.01) or the canine (P less than 0.0001) calibration tables. Estimates of IOP using the human calibration table and either the 5.5- or 7.5-g weight were not significantly different from each other or from those obtained with the Mackay-Marg tonometer. Schiotz measurements obtained with either weight and converted using the canine calibration table were not only significantly (P less than 0.0001) different from each other, but were also clinically and significantly (P less than 0.0001) higher than measurements obtained with the Tono-Pen and Mackay-Marg tonometers or the Schiotz tonometer, using the human calibration table and either weight. Approximately three quarters of clinically normal cats had an IOP greater than or equal to 30 mm of Hg when Schiotz tonometer measurements were converted with the canine conversion table. The human calibration table was the most clinically useful table for converting Schiotz measurements from clinically normal feline eyes to estimates of IOP in mm of Hg. Normal mean (+/- SD) feline readings with the Schiotz tonometer and the 5.5-g weight was 3.9 +/- 1.4 tonometer scale units (range, 1.0 to 7.5; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.1 to 6.7).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Commercial and specific-pathogen-free (SPF) nonselected broilers were held at environmental temperatures that simulated the cyclic diurnal extremes for either hot (26.6 C-40.7 C) or moderate (18.3 C-32.3 C) summer temperatures. The chicks received either inactivated or viable La Sota Newcastle vaccines at various times after the initiation of the temperature extremes. When held at moderate temperatures for 7 days and then injected with inactivated vaccine, commercial chicks developed slightly higher but not statistically different levels of antibody compared with chicks held in the hot environment. In one experiment, the geometric mean serologic hemagglutination-inhibition responses of SPF chickens housed at extremely high temperatures for 4 days before being injected with inactivated vaccine were significantly greater (P less than or equal to 0.05) than those held at moderate temperatures. The reverse was apparent for chickens that received live vaccine virus after being in the hot environment for any of several lengths of time before vaccination.  相似文献

1. Two experiments were conducted to assess the effect of fat sources differing in degree of saturation on the performance of and fat deposition in broiler chickens fed on isocaloric and isonitrogenous diets. 2. There were no differences in initial body weight between sexes but female broilers had lower daily gains (P <0.0001), final weights (P <0.0001) and food intakes (P <0.0001) than males. Abdominal fat pad weight was lower in male broilers than in female (P <0.001). 3. There were no significant differences in intake, weight gain, final body weight or food-to-gain ratios between birds fed on diets differing solely in the degree of fat saturation. Broilers fed on diets containing an animal fat blend or tallow had higher abdominal fat pad weight (P <0.001) and intramuscular lipid content (P =0.0085) than those fed on diets containing sunflower oil. 4. It was concluded that dietary fat saturation affects fat accumulation in broiler chickens.  相似文献

Studies of reticuloendotheliosis virus-induced lymphomagenesis in chickens   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Seventy-three percent of chickens inoculated with the chick syncytial strain of reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV) at hatching developed lymphomas by 39 weeks of age. Neonatal treatment with cyclophosphamide or surgical bursectomy at 2, 4, 8, or 12 weeks of age significantly (P less than 0.01) reduced lymphoma development. In a further experiment, surgical bursectomy of REV-infected chickens followed by intravenous inoculation of the chickens with a single cell suspension of their own bursa cells at 2, 4, 9, or 13 weeks of age resulted in lymphoid tumors in chickens treated at 9 or 13 weeks but not in chickens treated at 2 or 4 weeks of age. Furthermore, this treatment did not shorten the incubation period for lymphoma development. These findings argue very strongly that transforming target cells are primarily in the bursa of Fabricius. The data also suggest that a minimum residency of 4 weeks in the bursa is required for infected bursa cells to become transformed. Therefore, lymphomagenesis induced by REV in chickens appears similar to that induced by the avian leukosis virus group.  相似文献

Various age groups of turkeys, White Leghorn chickens, and broiler chickens were inoculated with turkey rotavirus strain Tu-2 or with chicken rotavirus Ch-2, and the development of rotavirus-induced lesions were evaluated macroscopically and microscopically (light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy). Morphometric evaluations were conducted to determine morphologic changes in the villi of infected turkeys. Macroscopic lesions that were found in turkeys, but not in chickens, consisted of pallor of the intestinal tract and distension of the cecum with frothy or nonfrothy fluid contents. Histologic lesions in turkeys consisted of basal vacuolation of enterocytes, separation of enterocytes from the lamina propria (with subsequent desquamation), villus atrophy accompanied by widening of the lamina propria, scalloping of the villus surface, fusion of the villi, and leukocytic infiltration of the lamina propria. Scanning electron microscopy indicated roughened villus surfaces, distortion of the normal morphologic features of the villi, and loss of microvilli in cells located on the tips of the villi. Most of the lesions disappeared by 8 days after inoculation. Results of the morphometric evaluations indicated that the crypt length had increased and the villus-to-crypt ratio had significantly decreased, compared with that of noninoculated control turkeys. Broilers greater than or equal to 21 days old and White Leghorn chickens greater than or equal to 35 days old had minimal leukocytic infiltration of the lamina propria and minimal loss of microvilli in cells located on the tips of the villi. The loss of microvilli was more extensive in chickens greater than or equal to 119 days old than in younger birds. Generally, turkeys 1 to 112 days old developed more severe lesions than did chickens, and lesions were more pronounced in turkeys at 112 days of age.  相似文献

Heterophil function was evaluated in 16 healthy chickens and in 46 chickens with experimentally induced staphylococcal tenosynovitis. In paired blood samples, heterophils from chickens with tenosynovitis had a significant increase in adherence, chemotaxis, phagocytosis, and bacterial killing of Staphylococcus aureus compared to heterophils from healthy chickens. The percent adherence of heterophils to nylon fiber columns increased significantly from a 78.4% mean +/- 6.6% standard deviation to 87.6% +/- 3.2% after induction of staphylococcal tenosynovitis. Heterophil movement following in vitro exposure to saline or endotoxin was increased in chickens with tenosynovitis; 3 +/- 1 heterophils/0.25 mm2 to 10 +/- 6 heterophils/0.25 mm2 and 136 +/- 29 heterophils/0.25 mm2 to 340 +/- 74 heterophils/0.25 mm2, respectively. Endotoxin-activated serum was chemoattractive for heterophils from all chickens. Flow cytometry was used to define the heterophil population on light scatter histograms, evaluate individual cell phagocytosis of latex beads, and quantitate the number of beads phagocytosed per heterophil. When incubated with increased numbers of beads, only heterophils from chickens with tenosynovitis phagocytosed higher numbers of beads. At heterophil to bead ratios of 1:10, the percentage of heterophils that phagocytosed beads increased from baseline values of 37.8% +/- 9.0% to post-infection values of 67.3% +/- 7.5%. Using 1:20 heterophil to bead ratios, heterophil phagocytosis increased from 38.7% +/- 9.9% to post-infection values of 79.8% +/- 7.3%. Heterophils from all chickens were able to phagocytose and kill log phase staphylococcal bacteria. After phagocytosis, the heterophils from chickens with staphylococcal tenosynovitis rapidly decreased the number of viable bacterial colony forming-units per milliliter by approximately one log.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Studies were undertaken to assess the chicken embryo and newly hatched chicken as models for studying the effects of bone-active agents. Initially, 1,25-dihydroxycholecaliferol (1,25[OH]2D3), sodium fluoride (NaF), parathyroid extract, epidermal growth factor, and prostaglandin E2, were tested for lethality over a broad dose range. One or 3 injections of 1,25(OH)2D3 into the yolk sac of chicken embryos resulted in death of embryos given greater than or equal to 0.1 ng/injection, whereas 0.01 ng was tolerated by the embryos. Administering 1,25(OH)2D3 intraperitoneally to newly hatched chickens as a single injection or weekly for 3 weeks resulted in no deaths at doses up to 50 ng. One or 3 IV injections of 800 micrograms of NaF were lethal to embryos, whereas injections of less than or equal to 400 micrograms were tolerated by the embryo. Giving chickens feed and water containing 2.4 g of NaF/kg was lethal, but no deaths occurred when chickens were given feed containing less than or equal to 1.2 g of NaF/kg. Mortality associated with the administration of epidermal growth factor to embryos was inconsistent, in that death occurred in embryos given a single injection of greater than or equal to 250 ng, but no deaths occurred in embryos given 3 injections at similar doses. Parathyroid extract and prostaglandin E2 were not lethal when administered to embryos and chickens in a single-injection or multiple-injection regimen. Overall, lethality in chicken embryos given a particular agent reflected the dose of bone-active agent injected, rather than the number of injections. Three of the bone-active agents were selected to characterize their microscopic bone effects in chicken embryos and chickens.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
