Effects of 2 dietary Mg concentrations (deficient and adequate: 0.04 and 0.12 g of Mg/100 g of dry matter, respectively) on body fluid and tissue Mg concentrations and performance of wether lambs were evaluated in a 28-day trial. Nine blood and 6 urine samples were collected from each wether. After 28 days, CSF and wool samples were collected, and diet, body fluids, and tissues were analyzed for mineral concentration. Diet effects on serum and urine Mg concentrations were noticed after day 3 (P less than 0.01; P less than 0.05, respectively). Mean serum and urine Mg concentrations for 6 sampling periods were correlated (r = 0.83, P less than 0.001; No. of samples = 12). The effect of dietary Mg on CSF Mg concentrations approached significance (P less than 0.10). Effects of diet on cardiac muscle, liver, and 3rd metatarsal bone Mg contents or hematologic criteria were not observed. Diet affected wool and kidney cortex Mg contents (P less than 0.02). Individual mean 28-day serum Mg concentration was correlated with wool Mg content (r = 0.73, P less than 0.05; n = 8) and with kidney cortex Mg content (r = 0.75, P less than 0.05; n = 8). Wethers fed low Mg diet excreted less urine Ca (P less than 0.001) and had slightly lower serum Ca and K values (P less than 0.10) than did wethers fed high Mg. Significant differences in cardiac muscle, liver, spleen, or kidney cortex Ca contents were not observed. Wethers fed low Mg diet consumed less dry matter and gained less weight (P less than 0.001) than did wethers fed high Mg diet. Body fluid and tissue macromineral concentrations of 1 wether with hypomagnesemic tetany are presented for prognostic and diagnostic purposes.  相似文献

The study reported here was part of a long-term investigation of the effects of genotype on growth, reproduction, and metabolism in cattle grazing common Bermuda grass and endophyte-infected fescue pastures. In June 1990, blood samples were collected from the tail vein of yearling heifers and steers (Angus [AA], Brahman [BB], and their reciprocal crosses [AB, BA], n = 97). Serum amylase activity was assayed enzymatically; serum Ca and Mg concentrations were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The effects of endophyte-infected fescue depended on genotype (P less than 0.001). In yearlings having at least 1 Angus parent (AA, AB, BA), grazing endophyte-infected fescue was associated with higher serum amylase activity than was grazing Bermuda grass. But serum amylase activities of BB yearlings consuming either forage were similar. Moreover, for either forage, substantial differences were related to genotype (P less than 0.007) and gender (P less than 0.05). Angus yearlings had higher serum amylase activity than did Brahman yearlings; AB and BA yearlings had intermediate values. Heifers had higher amylase activity than did steers. The relationship among serum values of amylase, Ca, and Mg depended on forage. Yearlings consuming endophyte-infected fescue and having at least 1 Angus parent had a moderate negative correlation between serum amylase activity and Ca concentration (r = -0.53; P less than 0.0005); that is, in calves of genotypes with increased amylase activity while consuming endophyte-infected fescue (AA, AB, BA), the higher the amylase activity, the lower the serum Ca concentration. In Exp. 1, Simmental (n = 21) and Angus (n = 21) heifers, approximately 9 mo of age, were used in a 160-d study to determine the effect of dietary Cu on growth and Cu status. Two- or three-yr-old first-calf heifers (21 Angus and 21 Simmental) entering into their last trimester of pregnancy were used in Exp. 2 to estimate Cu requirements of the two breeds during gestation and early lactation. Treatments in both studies consisted of 0 (control), 7, or 14 mg of supplemental Cu (as CuSO4)/kg of DM. The control corn silage-based diets contained 6.4 and 4.4 mg of Cu/kg of DM in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively, and 1.2 mg of Mo/kg. Dietary Cu did not affect performance in either breed in Exp. 1. Copper supplementation generally did not affect plasma Cu concentrations in Angus heifers, but increased (P < 0.05) plasma Cu in Simmental heifers from d 37 until the end of Exp. 1. Final liver Cu concentrations were lower (P < 0.05) than initial concentrations in control Angus and Simmental heifers; however, liver Cu increased (P < 0.01) in Cu-supplemented heifers. In Exp. 2, Cu supplementation of the control diet increased (P < 0.05) plasma Cu during gestation and greatly increased (P < 0.01) liver Cu in both breeds. Calves born to cows not supplemented with Cu also had lower plasma Cu concentrations than Cu-supplemented calves by 73 d of age. In both studies, control Simmental heifers had lower (P < 0.05) plasma Cu concentrations than Angus on most sampling dates. When Cu was supplemented at 7 or 14 mg/kg of DM,few differences in plasma Cu concentrations were observed between breeds. Results suggest that Angus heifers have a lower minimal Cu requirement than Simmental. Based on liver Cu, the control diets containing 4.4 or 6.4 mg of Cu/kg of DM did not meet the Cu requirement of either breed during gestation and lactation or growth. Addition of 7 mg of Cu/kg of DM to the control diets met Cu requirements of both breeds.  相似文献

本试验旨在分析金川县牦牛血清和被毛的矿物元素含量,探讨肋数和年龄对矿物元素含量的影响,并对被毛矿物元素含量与血清中相应元素含量的相关性进行分析。采用二因素有重复试验设计,将32只公牦牛进行分组,按照肋数[14肋(n=17)和15肋(n=15)]和年龄[0(初生)~2岁(n=10)、3~4岁(n=11)、5~6岁(n=5)、7~8岁(n=6)]共分为8组。分别采集血清及被毛样品,进行矿物元素含量分析。结果表明:1)肋数、年龄对血清中的钙(Ca)、铜(Cu)、铁(Fe)、钾(K)、镁(Mg)、锰(Mn)、钠(Na)、锌(Zn)的含量均无显著影响(P0.05);年龄和肋数间无互作(P0.05)。2)肋数对被毛Ca、Cu、Fe、Mg、Mn、Na、Zn含量无显著影响(P0.05);年龄可影响被毛K含量,7~8岁被毛K含量显著高于其他年龄段(P0.05),但对被毛其他元素含量均无显著影响(P0.05),年龄和肋数间无互作(P0.05)。3)被毛Ca、Cu、Fe、Mg、Zn与血清中相应元素含量相关性极显著(P0.01),相关系数分别为0.623 0、0.539 8、0.569 2、0.468 4、0.505 3,而K、M n、Na含量的相关性则不显著(P0.05)。综合可知,金川14肋与15肋牦牛矿物元素含量无显著差异;7~8岁被毛中的K含量显著升高;牦牛被毛、血清Ca、Cu、Fe、M g、Zn含量具有显著的相关性,可由被毛代替血清测定相应的矿物元素含量。  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of genotype and week postpartum on serum concentrations of IGF-I, body condition score (BCS), BW, and ovarian function in beef cows. Cows from the following genotypes were utilized in two consecutive years: Angus (A x A; n = 9), Brahman (B x B; n = 10), Charolais (C x C; n = 12), Angus x Brahman (A x B; n = 22), Brahman x Charolais (B x C; n = 19) and Angus x Charolais (A x C; n = 24). Serum concentrations of IGF-I, BCS, and BW were determined between wk 2 and 9 postpartum. Rectal ultrasound was used to determine days postpartum to first medium (6 to 9 mm) and first large (> or = 10 mm) follicle. Averaged across genotype, BCS decreased (P < 0.05) from 5.0 +/- 0.1 on wk 3 to 4.8 +/- 0.1 on wk 6 postpartum, and BW decreased (P < 0.05) between wk 2 and 3 and again between wk 4 and 9 postpartum. Averaged over year and week postpartum, serum IGF-I concentrations were greatest (P < 0.05) in B x B cows (46 +/- 5 ng/mL) compared with all other genotypes; lowest in A x A (12 +/- 4 ng/mL), C x C (13 +/- 4 ng/mL), and A x C cows (18 +/- 3 ng/mL); and intermediate (P < 0.05) in A x B (28 +/- 3 ng/mL) and B x C (26 +/- 3 ng/mL) cows compared with all other genotypes. Serum IGF-I concentrations did not change (P > 0.10) with week postpartum in C x C, A x A, and A x C cows, but increased (P < 0.05) between wk 2 and 7 postpartum in B x C, A x B, and B x B cows. Average interval to first medium (16 +/- 2 d) and first large (35 +/- 2 d) follicle did not differ (P > 0.10) among genotypes. Serum IGF-I concentrations correlated with BCS (r = 0.53 to 0.72, P < 0.001) but not with days to first large follicle (r = -0.19 to -0.22, P > 0.10). Averaged across genotypes, cows that lost BCS postpartum had lower (P < 0.01) serum IGF-I concentrations. Cows that calved with adequate BCS (i.e., > or = 5) had greater (P < 0.01) serum IGF-I concentrations postpartum than cows that calved with inadequate BCS (i.e., < 5) but days to first large and medium follicle did not differ (P > 0.10). In conclusion, concentrations of IGF-I in serum differed among genotypes and were associated with BCS but not days to first large or medium follicle in postpartum beef cows.  相似文献

Forty-four Angus (n = 24) and Simmental (n = 20) steers, averaging 301 kg initially, were used to determine the effects of breed and Cu and Zn source (SO4 or proteinate (Prot) form) on Cu and Zn status of steers fed high dietary iron (Fe). Steers were stratified by weight within breed and randomly assigned to treatments. Treatments consisted of: 1) CuSO4 + ZnSO4 ,2) CuSO4 + ZnProt, 3) CuProt + ZnSO4, and 4) CuProt + ZnProt. Copper and Zn sources were added to provide 5 mg Cu and 25 mg supplemental Zn/kg DM. All steers were individually fed a corn silage-based diet supplemented with 1,000 mg Fe (from FeSO4)/kg DM. Liver biopsy samples were obtained at the beginning and end of the 149-d study. Serum samples were collected initially and at 28-d intervals for determination of ceruloplasmin activity and Zn and Cu concentrations. Copper and Zn source did not affect performance, serum or liver Cu and Zn concentrations, or ceruloplasmin activity. Copper status decreased (P < 0.01) in all steers with time, and increasing the level of supplemental Cu from 5 to 10 mg/kg DM on d 84 did not prevent further drops in serum Cu and ceruloplasmin. Simmental steers had lower (P < 0.05) serum and liver Cu concentrations, and serum ceruloplasmin activity throughout the study. These results indicate that neither CuSO4 nor CuProt were effective at the supplemental concentrations evaluated in alleviating the adverse effect of high Fe on Cu status. Simmental steers had lower Cu status than Angus, suggesting a higher Cu requirement.  相似文献

Crossbred steers (n = 136) were used to assess breed differences in growth performance, carcass characteristics, fatty acid composition (total lipids and phospholipids), and palatability attributes of longissimus muscle. A multiple regression model was applied to crossbreeding data to estimate genetic differences between Simmental and Red Angus at the same level of backfat finish (10 mm). Simmental spent 71 more (P < 0.001) days on feed to acquire the same degree of backfat thickness as Red Angus, had heavier (P < 0.001) slaughter weights, larger (P = 0.002) longissimus muscle area, and increased (P = 0.023) lean yield. Average daily gain did not differ (P = 0.297) between breeds. Simmental were less (P = 0.012) efficient in converting feed to gain than Red Angus. Generally, there were few breed differences in palatability attributes for longissimus and semitendinosus muscles, with the exception of increased (P < 0.05) beef flavor scores for Simmental beef vs Red Angus beef across both muscles. For total lipids, concentrations of myristoleic acid (14:1), palmitoleic acid (16:1), and vaccenic acid (18:1n-7), along with n-6 to n-3 fatty acid (n-6:n-3) ratio, were greater (P < 0.05) in Simmental than Red Angus. In contrast, concentrations of margaric acid (17:0), eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3), and total n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) were greater (P < 0.05) in Red Angus than Simmental. For phospholipids, Simmental had lower (P < 0.05) amounts of 20:5n-3, docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3), and n-3 PUFA, with a greater (P = 0.017) n-6:n-3 ratio. Activity of delta9-desaturase enzyme in the conversion of palmitic acid (16:0) to 16:1 was greater (P = 0.001) in total lipids from Simmental as compared with Red Angus. A genetic basis for fatty acid differences is suggested, although the biological and practical significance needs to be demonstrated.  相似文献

Understanding mechanisms that regulate growth and reproduction are important for improving selection strategies in cattle. In this study, Angus, Brangus, and Brahman bulls (n = 7 per breed) of similar age were selected from a group of 65 weanlings. Bulls were evaluated after weaning (i.e., approximately 6 mo of age) for 112 d for serum concentrations of metabolic hormones and glucose, growth, and reproductive traits. Performance data and blood sera were collected on d 0, 28, 56, 84, and 112. Sera were also collected in periods from d 50 to 59 (56D) and 103 to 112 (112D). Angus bulls were heavier (P < 0.05) throughout the study than Brahman bulls and were heavier than Brangus bulls on d 56, 84, and 112. Initial and final BW for Angus, Brangus, and Brahman bulls were 292.7, 260.6, and 230.4 and 468.3, 435.6, and 350.7 +/- 12 kg, respectively. Conversely, Brahman bulls had greater hip height (P < 0.05) than Brangus, and Brangus were taller (P < 0.05) than Angus. Angus bulls had the greatest (P < 0.05) scrotal circumference (SC) and Brahman bulls the least. Mean SC across days was 31.5, 29.7, and 25.0 +/- 0.6 cm for the three respective breeds. Serum testosterone was greater (P < 0.01) in Angus and Brangus bulls (10.0 and 8.9 +/- 1.4 ng/mL) than in Brahman bulls (4.0 +/- 1.4 ng/mL) throughout the study. After d 112, 100, 86, and 57% of the Angus, Brangus, and Brahman bulls passed a breeding soundness exam (P = 0.51). Serum concentrations of IGF-I and leptin were greater (P < or = 0.06) in Angus bulls on d 56, 84, and 112 than in Brangus and Brahman bulls. Serum concentrations of GH (P < 0.08) and glucose (P < 0.03) were greater in Brangus bulls than in Angus or Brahman bulls throughout the study. Prediction analyses suggested that serum concentrations of leptin could be used to predict (P < or = 0.08) BW and SC (R2 > 0.82) in the 56D and 112D periods among these breeds. Leptin was also useful in predicting (P < or = 0.09) serum concentrations of GH and testosterone in the 112D period (R2 > 0.32). Residual correlation analyses with the effect of breed removed suggested that leptin was correlated (r > or => 0.53, P < 0.05) with both SC and serum testosterone. Angus and Brahman cattle differ in phenotype, level of adiposity, and rate of sexual development. Data herein suggest that these characteristics could be due to varying mechanisms by which metabolic hormones such as leptin, GH, and(or) IGF-I are regulated.  相似文献

Concentrations of trace elements (As, Al, Pb, Cd, Hg, Se, Si, P, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Cr, Ni and Mn) in the mane hair obtained from 9 female and 15 male healthy racing Thoroughbred horses aged 2-5 years were analyzed by the inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) method. No significant differences between the female and male horses were observed in the mean concentrations of those minerals. Significantly positive correlations with age were observed in Cd (r=0.546, p<0.01) and Mo (r=0.733, p<0.001). Significantly negative correlations with age were observed in Hg (r= -0.726, p<0.001), Mn (r= -0.450, p<0.05) and Fe (r=-0.642, p<0.01). This reference range of trace elements in the mane hair of racing horses should be used to assess disease and the nutritional status in equine practice.  相似文献

The effect of i.v. administration of ionophores on metabolism in ruminants was investigated in two experiments. In Exp. 1, four Angus heifers were assigned randomly to receive i.v. monensin (18 mg, n = 2) or vehicle (control, n = 2). Samples were collected from indwelling vena cava cannulas from -60 to 240 min. Concentrations of K, Mg (P less than .05) and P (P less than .10) were lower and glucose (GLU) and free fatty acids (FFA) were higher (P less than .05) in monensin-treated than in control heifers. Serum insulin (INS) initially declined and subsequently increased (P less than .05) following monensin administration. A second experiment was conducted to determine the effect of a higher dose of monensin and the effect of lasalocid on minerals and metabolites. Angus (n = 3) and Hereford (n = 3) steers were randomly assigned to treatments in two 3 x 3 latin square designs. Treatments were i.v. administration of monensin, lasalocid or vehicle (ethanol) administered on three consecutive days. Administration of monensin, but not vehicle or lasalocid, resulted in ataxia, hypernea, polyuria and anorexia for approximately 2 h. Plasma concentrations of K, P and Mg were suppressed (P less than .05) by monensin, but not by vehicle or lasalocid administration. The decrease in K was preceded by a transient increase in K 15 min after administering monensin. Concentrations of GLU and FFA increased (P less than .05) following monensin administration. Concentrations of INS were lower from 60 to 120 min and greater at 180 and 240 min compared with -60 to 0 min from monensin administration (P less than .05). These results provide first evidence of an effect of monensin on metabolism in ruminants independent of alterations in ruminal microbial metabolism.  相似文献

Lactating beef cows (16 Hereford and 34 Angus, 430 kg average body weight, aged 8 to 10 yr) were fed a basal diet containing 200 micrograms/g Al alone or supplemented with Al-citrate, citric acid, soil or soil plus citric acid for 56 d. Diets containing Al-citrate, soil and soil plus citric acid contained 1,730, 1,870 and 1,935 micrograms/g Al, dry-basis, respectively. Adding soil to the diet also increased Mg and Fe content of the diet. Aluminum values in ruminal contents of beef cows fed the basal alone or supplemented with citric acid, Al-citrate, soil or soil plus citric acid were 800, 990, 2,930, 3,410 and 2,910 micrograms/g, air-dry basis, respectively. Serum Mg and inorganic P declined (P less than .01) and urinary Ca concentration increased (P less than .01) for cows fed Al-citrate. By d 56, serum Mg was 1.5 and 2.2 mg/dl, and serum P was 3.8 and 6.8 mg/dl, for cows fed Al-citrate and basal diets, respectively. Calcium concentrations in urine were 281 and 11 micrograms/g for cows fed Al-citrate and basal diets, respectively. Citric acid, soil and soil plus citric acid had no detrimental effects on serum Mg and inorganic P, or urinary Ca concentration. By d 56, serum Ca was higher (P less than .06) in cows fed Al-citrate, compared with cows on the other four diets. Bone Ca, P, Zn and percent ash were not significantly affected by treatment but bone Mg tended to be slightly lower (P less than .07) for cows fed Al-citrate.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Serum concentrations of thyroxine (T4), beta-carotene (beta K), vitamin A and conception after the first insemination on the zero, sixth and 21st day were studied in 63 heifers fed synthetic beta K supplement in groups I to IV at stanchion housing and low-carotene diet. The following amount of beta K was supplemented per head/day: I--0 mg (control, n = 17), II--100 mg (n = 16), III--200 mg (n = 14) and IV--400 mg (n = 16). The parameters were evaluated separately according to groups and conception. By comparing the T4 concentration between experimental groups and control, separately in non-gravid and gravid animals, a significant increase (P less than 0.05) was determined only on the zero day in the fourth group. At the same time, in the fourth group, in comparison with the others, insignificantly lower T4 values were recorded in non-gravid animals. beta K values on the zero day in gravid animals increased in a direct proportion to the higher supplement (P less than 0.05; P less than 0.01; P less than 0.001); in non-gravid animals the increase was slower (P less than 0.05; P less than 0.05; P less than 0.01), but differences in relation to gravidity were not significant. An increase of beta K had no significant effect on serum concentrations of vitamin A. Differences between groups as far as conception was concerned were insignificant. It follows from the results that increasing rates of beta K, with the exception of serum concentrations, had no significant effect on other parameters. Higher concentrations of T4 and a slower increase of beta K in non-gravid animals, however, point at mutual co-operation relation and its positive effect on conception in animals.  相似文献

Two feedlot studies were conducted to investigate the timing and duration of supplemental vitamin A withdrawal from feedlot cattle (Bos taurus) diets to reduce intramuscular adipose tissue vitamin A concentration and improve carcass quality. In Exp. 1, Angus crossbred steers (n = 84, BW = 211 ± 4 kg) were allotted to 4 treatments: no supplemental vitamin A for 227 d, no supplemental vitamin A for 112 d followed by 115 d of supplemental vitamin A, supplemental vitamin A for 112 d followed by no supplemental vitamin A for 115 d, or supplemental vitamin A for 227 d. In Exp. 2, Angus crossbred steers (n = 80, BW = 210 ± 5 kg) were allotted to 4 treatments: early weaning with or without supplemental vitamin A, and traditional weaning with or without supplemental vitamin A. In both experiments, serum vitamin A concentrations were greatest (P < 0.05) 56 d after cattle were weaned and placed in the feedlot, regardless of feedlot dietary vitamin A concentration. Hepatic vitamin A stores were dramatically decreased (P < 0.05) in the first 56 d and remained depressed as long as steers were not supplemented with vitamin A. At the end of the finishing period, vitamin A concentrations were less in intramuscular than subcutaneous adipose tissue. Growth was not affected by finishing cattle without supplemental dietary vitamin A (P > 0.10). Dietary vitamin A supplementation did not affect USDA yield grades. However, in Exp. 2, cattle without supplemental vitamin A had greater (P < 0.001) ether extractable lipid in the LM. Ether extractable lipid in the LM or marbling scores were enhanced when intramuscular adipose tissue vitamin A concentration was reduced in response to feeding diets without supplemental vitamin A.  相似文献

Understanding metabolic differences between breeds of cattle is important when selecting for production in semiarid environments. Spring-calving multiparous Angus and Brahman cows (n = 8/breed) grazing in the Chihuahuan Desert were used to evaluate metabolic hormone status in February (i.e., 3rd trimester of pregnancy), May (i.e., early lactation), and September (i.e., late lactation) 2000. Crude protein in ruminal digesta collected from grazing companion ruminally cannulated cows during these months was 5.6, 6.0, and 10.3%, respectively. Angus cows were heavier (P < 0.01) than Brahman cows across months. Body condition scores among breed groups were 4.4, 3.6, and 4.6 in February, May, and September with Brahman cows tending (P < 0.10) to have greater body condition than Angus cows in May. Brahman cows tended to have greater fecal output per 100 kg BW than Angus cows in February (0.9 > 0.7 +/- 0.1, P < 0.10). Brahman cows had greater serum concentrations of leptin than Angus cows in September (1.8 > 0.70 +/- 0.1 ng/mL; P < 0.05), and serum concentrations of insulin were greater (P < 0.01) in Brahman than Angus cows throughout the study. Brahman cows also had greater (P < 0.01) serum concentrations of glucose during February and May than Angus cows. Serum concentrations of triiodothyronine were greatest (P < 0.01) during September and lowest during February and May in both breed groups and were greater (P < 0.01) in Brahman than in Angus cows in February, May, and September. Pregnancy rate and 205-d adjusted weaning weights were similar (P > or = 0.46) among breed groups. Results suggest that Brahman and Angus cows are sensitive to the seasonal dynamics of forage quality in the Chihuahuan Desert. Brahman cattle appear to have greater concentrations of metabolic hormones and metabolites than Angus cows in this environment, but Angus cows experience greater fluctuations in BW.  相似文献

Holstein heifers (n = 21) were balanced across sires and assigned to three service-sire-breed groups in which heifers were inseminated artificially to either purebred Angus (n = 7), Holstein (n = 7) or Brahman (n = 7) bulls. Semen from four bulls was used for each service sire-breed group. Blood samples were collected from a jugular vein thrice weekly from d 160 to 265 of pregnancy, daily thereafter until 15 d postpartum, and then thrice weekly until d 60 postpartum. Concentrations of progesterone, estrone, estradiol, and estrone sulfate from 23 d prepartum to parturition, and of 15-keto-13,14-dihydro-prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGFM) from 2 d prepartum to d 15 postpartum were measured by radioimmunoassay. Heifers within the Brahman-service-sire group had longer gestations (P less than .05) than those of Holstein- or Angus-service-sire groups (285.0 vs 278.7), 279.0 d). Calf birth weight was lower (P less than .05) in Angus- than Holstein- and Brahman-service-sire groups (30.6 vs 36.1, 43.4 kg). Daily trends of prepartum maternal progesterone concentrations were approximately 1 ng/ml lower (P less than .01) in Angus- than Holstein- or Brahman-service-sire groups until luteolysis occurred. Heifers bearing crossbred Angus conceptuses had lower daily trends of prepartum estrogens concentrations (P less than .01), whereas heifers of the Holstein- and, even more dramatically, of the Brahman-service-sire groups had a higher magnitude and greater rise of plasma estrogens concentrations between d -10 and -1 prepartum (less than .01). Postpartum mean concentrations (P less than .05) and response curves of PGFM were lower (P less than .01) in the Angus- than in the Holstein- or Brahman-service-sire groups. Calf birth weights were correlated with least-squares means for maternal concentrations of prepartum estrone (r = .57), estradiol (r = .59) and estrone sulfate (r = .64) and postpartum maternal concentrations of PGFM (r = .56). Functional responses of the conceptus (e.g., estrogens) and maternal units (e.g., progesterone and PGFM) were influenced by conceptus genotype during the periparturient period.  相似文献

The objectives were to determine if strategic supplementation of range cows with a long-acting (6 mo), trace mineral, reticulorumen bolus containing Cu, Se, and Co would: (1) increase cow BCS and BW, and calf birth, weaning, and postweaning weights, or weight per day of age (WDA); (2) increase liver concentrations of Cu or Zn in cows, or blood Se, Cu, or Zn concentrations in cows and calves; and (3) vary by cow breed for any of these response variables. There were 192 control and 144 bolused Composite cows (C; 25% Hereford, Angus, Gelbevieh, and Senepol or Barzona); 236 control and 158 bolused Hereford (H) cows; and 208 control and 149 bolused Brahman cross (B) cows used in a 3-yr experiment. Cows were weighed and scored for body condition in January, May, and September, and all bolused cows received boluses in January. Each year, from among the 3 breed groups a subset of 15 control and 15 bolused cows (n = 90) had samples obtained in January and May for liver Cu and Zn, blood Se, and serum Cu and Zn. As for cows, blood and serum from the calves of these cows were sampled each year in May and September for Cu, Se, and Zn. There was a significant breed x year x treatment interaction (P = 0.001) for cow weight loss from January to May. Calf WDA, weaning, and postweaning weights did not differ (P > 0.40) between bolused and control cows, but there was a significant (P = 0.022) breed x year x treatment interaction for birth weight. Liver Cu was deficient (< 75 ppm; P < 0.001) in control cows and adequate (< 75 to 90 ppm) for bolused cows. Liver Cu differed by year (P < 0.001). Blood Se was adequate (< 0.1 ppm) for all cows except in January 2001 and 2002. There was no difference (P > 0.50) in blood Se between treatment groups in January, but bolused cows had greater (P < 0.01) blood Se in May. Breed differences for blood Se concentrations existed for bolused cows, with B having greater (P < 0.05) blood Se than either C or H cows. Breed differences also existed for control cows, with H having less blood Se (P < 0.04) than B or C cows. Calves from bolused cows had greater blood Se than calves from control cows (P = 0.01). Supplementation via a long-acting trace mineral bolus was successful in increasing liver Cu in cows and blood Se in cows and calves, but the responses varied by year. Bolus administration had variable effects on BW change in early lactation, depending on breed and year, which may indicate the need for breed- and year-specific supplementation programs.  相似文献

A 2-yr study was conducted at the Range Cattle Research and Education Center, University of Florida – Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) (Ona, FL), to evaluate differences in the metabolism of Cu and Se of Angus (Bos taurus) and Brahman (Bos indicus) cattle. Thirty-two pregnant beef cows (n = 8 Brahman and 8 Angus/yr) were enrolled in the study in the first trimester of gestation. This study consisted of three phases: 1) restriction (day 0 to 90), 2) supplementation (day 91 to 150), and 3) calving. During all three phases, cows were individually fed and housed in partially covered drylot pens. During the restriction and supplementation phases, cows were provided a 1.5 kg/d of a grain-based concentrate supplement, which was fortified with flowers of S (50 g of supplemental S/cow daily; restriction phase) or Cu and Se (100 and 3 mg/d of Cu and Se, respectively; supplementation phase). Blood and liver samples were collected from all cows at 30 d intervals and from both cows and calves within 24 h of calving. Colostrum and milk samples were collected at calving and 7 d after birth. All data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure of SAS, where cow and calf were the experimental unit. During the restriction phase, a breed × day effect (P = 0.03) was observed where Brahman had greater liver Cu concentration than Angus cows in all sampling days. For liver Se concentration, a tendency (P = 0.07) for a breed effect was observed where Angus cows tended to have greater liver Se concentration than Brahman. During the supplementation phase, breed (P < 0.001) and day (P < 0.01) effects were observed, where Brahman cows had greater liver Cu concentration than Angus. For liver Se concentration, a day effect (P < 0.001) was observed, where liver Se concentration increased (P < 0.001) from day 90 to 120 and remained unchanged (P = 0.86) until day 150. At calving, no effects of breed (P = 0.34) were observed for liver Cu concentration of cows; however, Brahman calves tended (P = 0.09) to have greater liver Cu concentration than Angus calves. For Se liver concentration at calving, Angus cows tended (P = 0.07) to have greater liver Se concentration than Brahman cows; however, no breed differences (P = 0.70) were observed for liver Se concentration of calves at birth. In summary, substantial differences in multiple indicators of Cu and Se status were observed between Angus and Brahman cattle, implying that Angus and Brahman cattle possibly have different mechanisms to maintain adequate Cu and Se status.  相似文献

We determined changes in insulin, glucose, free fatty acids (FFA), growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) and LH before puberty in Angus, Braford, Charolais, and Simmental heifers. Our primary objective was to identify metabolites and metabolic hormones that serve as metabolic cues for onset of puberty. Angus (n = 12). Braford (n = 7), Charolais (n = 9), and Simmental (n = 7) heifers were assigned at weaning (289 +/- 25 d of age; 264 +/- 23 kg) to open-sided pens with slotted floors, and they were fed a corn silage-concentrate diet formulated to provide gains of .91 kg/d. Puberty was defined as the 1st d (d 0) that serum progesterone (determined in blood samples collected at weekly intervals) exceeded 1 ng/ml. Blood samples were collected before and after feeding at 15-min intervals for 8 h at 21-d intervals before puberty in a subsample of heifers (at least five per breed). Angus and Simmental heifers weighed less and were younger (P less than .05) at puberty than Charolais and Braford heifers. Serum FFA before feeding and frequency of LH release increased (P less than .05) from d-40 +/- 3 to d-17 +/- 3 in all breeds. Conversely, concentrations of insulin were greater (P less than .05) at -40 than at -17 d from puberty in Angus, but not in Braford, Charolais, or Simmental heifers. Frequency of GH release was greater at d -40 than at d -17 in Angus heifers; however, in Braford and Charolais heifers frequency of GH release was greater at d -17 than at d -40. Concentrations of IGF-I (measured every 2 wk) increased linearly (P less than .07) from d -56 to 0 from puberty in Angus but not in other breeds. In conclusion, frequency of LH release and concentrations of FFA increased before puberty in all breeds; however, consistent changes in other metabolites and hormones were observed only in Angus heifers.  相似文献

Over a 2-yr period, effects of genotype and forage on blood metabolites, enzymes, and minerals were determined in Angus, Brahman, Angus x Brahman (sire x dam), and Brahman x Angus cows, and 129 calves from these cows sired by Hereford bulls. Cows and calves continuously grazed either common bermudagrass or endophyte-infected 'Kentucky-31' tall fescue pastures throughout the year. Blood samples were collected via jugular venipuncture in April, August, October (weaning), and November (after 30 d in a feedlot) of each year. Plasma urea N concentrations of cows and calves were affected by forage (P < 0.01) and breed (P < 0.05). Plasma cholesterol and FFA concentrations of cows were affected by forage (P < 0.01) and breed (P < 0.05). In calves, antibody titers to infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus were not affected by forage but were affected by breed. Serum inorganic P concentrations of calves and cows were affected by forage (P < 0.05). Serum P concentrations and alkaline phosphatase activity of calves were affected by breed (P < 0.05). Calves grazing bermudagrass had higher (P < 0.05) serum concentrations of Fe and total iron binding capacity (TIBC). There was evidence of maternal heterosis for concentrations of free fatty acids, cholesterol, aspartate aminotransferase, Ca, Mg, alkaline phosphatase, ceruloplasmin, Fe, and TIBC. There was evidence of grandmaternal effects for plasma concentrations of urea N, cholesterol, Ca, P, Mg, and alkaline phosphatase. These results suggest that calves and cows grazing tall fescue are generally on a lower plane of nutrition than those grazing bermudagrass and that Brahman x Angus and Angus x Brahman crossbred cows and their calves seen to be more tolerant of the negative effects of tall fescue than the average of their purebred contemporaries.  相似文献

Crossbred yearling steers (n=80; 406 ± 2.7 kg of BW) were used to evaluate the effects of S concentration in dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and ruminal concentrations of CH(4) and H(2)S in finishing steers fed diets based on steam-flaked corn (SFC) or dry-rolled corn (DRC) and containing 30% DDGS (DM basis) with moderate S (0.42% S, MS) or high S (0.65% S, HS). Treatments consisted of SFC diets containing MS (SFC-MS), SFC diets containing HS (SFC-HS), DRC diets containing MS (DRC-MS), or DRC diets containing HS (DRC-HS). High S was achieved by adding H(2)SO(4) to DDGS. Ruminal gas samples were analyzed for concentrations of H(2)S and CH(4). Steers were fed once daily in quantities that resulted in traces of residual feed in the bunk the following day for 140 d. No interactions (P ≥ 0.15) between dietary S concentration and grain processing were observed with respect to growth performance or carcass characteristics. Steers fed HS diets had 8.9% less DMI (P < 0.001) and 12.9% less ADG (P=0.006) than steers fed diets with MS, but S concentration had no effect on G:F (P=0.25). Cattle fed HS yielded 4.3% lighter HCW (P = 0.006) and had 16.2% less KPH (P=0.009) than steers fed MS. Steers fed HS had decreased (P=0.04) yield grades compared with steers fed MS. No differences were observed among treatments with respect to dressing percentage, liver abscesses, 12th-rib fat thickness, LM area, or USDA quality grades (P ≥ 0.18). Steers fed SFC had less DMI (P < 0.001) than steers fed DRC. Grain processing had no effect (P > 0.05) on G:F or carcass characteristics. Cattle fed HS had greater (P < 0.001) ruminal concentrations of H(2)S than cattle fed MS. Hydrogen sulfide concentration was inversely related (P ≤ 0.01) to ADG (r=-0.58) and DMI (r=-0.67) in cattle fed SFC, and to DMI (r=-0.40) in cattle fed DRC. Feeding DDGS that are high in dietary S may decrease the DMI of beef steers and compromise the growth performance and carcass characteristics of feedlot cattle.  相似文献
