AIM: To describe the accuracy of transrectal ultrasonography for predicting calving dates in dairy cows under typical New Zealand conditions and to assess potential risk factors for differences between predicted and actual calving dates.

METHODS: Data were collected from 116 seasonally calving herds over 2 years in a retrospective single cohort study. Transrectal ultrasonography was undertaken by experienced veterinarians (n=12) to determine if cows were pregnant, and if so to estimate fetal age. Predicted calving date was calculated by adding 282 days to the estimated conception date. Accuracy was assessed using differences between predicted and actual calving dates for each animal. Potential risk factors for animals calving >10 days before or after their predicted calving date were assessed using multinomial logistic regression models.

RESULTS: The study population comprised 83,104 cows over the 2 years of the study; 75,037 (90.3%) cows calved within 10 days of their predicted calving date, 3,683 (4.4%) calved >10 days earlier, and 4,384 (5.3%) >10 days later, than predicted. Risk factors for calving >10 days before or after the predicted calving date included having >1 artificial insemination (AI) before pregnancy diagnosis (p=0.03), where the cow’s most recent AI was <21 days before the end of the herd’s AI period (p<0.01), and where the diagnosis was made at the second or third herd-visit (p<0.01). The probability of calving being >10 days later than predicted also increased when the fetus was ≥13 weeks old at pregnancy diagnosis (p<0.01).

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In this study, >90% of cows diagnosed pregnant by veterinarians using transrectal ultrasonography calved within 10 days of the predicted calving date. In herds where herd reproductive performance is high, it would be expected that more cows would conceive to their first AI, and potentially fewer cows would have AI close to the end of the herd’s AI period, which would increase diagnostic accuracy. Where herd managers rely on accurate predicted calving dates they should be informed about realistic expected accuracy. For greatest accuracy, a complete AI history should be made available to the person performing the pregnancy diagnoses and cows at most risk of having inaccurate predicted calving dates should be identified.  相似文献

An indirect Ostertagia ostertagi ELISA was used in late lactation milk samples from cows in confined and semi-confined dairy herds to determine if it could predict milk production response after endectocide treatment at calving. Holstein cows from 9 dairy farms from Prince Edward Island (PEI), 5 from central Nova Scotia and 16 from southern Ontario that were participating in a clinical trial of endectocide treatment around calving were used in this study. The cows were randomly treated with either eprinomectin pour-on endectocide or a placebo solution. Milk samples were obtained from cows late in the lactation before treatment was applied. These samples were tested for antibodies to gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) using the indirect ELISA with the results expressed as optical density ratios (ODR). Production records were obtained from a computerized database of dairy herd improvement data. Pre-calving ODR showed a seasonal pattern. They were higher in the summer and fall and lower during the winter months. Older animals had higher pre-calving ODR values compared with younger cows. Similarly, cows from semi-confined herds had higher parasite antibody levels compared with cows from confined herds. The endectocide treatment did not affect the milk production response in the overall study population. However, the interaction effect between treatment and pre-calving ODR on milk production response after endectocide treatment was significant (P = 0.02), with some evidence of positive treatment response in cows with an ODR > 0.4. The relationship between pre-calving ODR and production response appeared to be quadratic rather than linear.  相似文献

From 1979 through 1987, British breed and crossbred cows were mated to Simmental, Pinzgauer or Tarentaise bulls or to Hereford-Angus crossbred bulls. Beginning in 1982, continental European crossbred females also entered the herd, to be mated for first calving to Hereford-Angus or Angus bulls and as cows to continental European or Hereford-Angus bulls. In progeny of British breed and crossbred cows, dam breed effects on birth and weaning weight were not important, but continental European crossbred calves were heavier than British crossbred contemporaries at birth and weaning. Pinzgauer- and Simmental-sired calves were heavier at birth than Tarentaise crosses, but calves sired by each of the continental breeds had similar weaning weights. Maternal heterosis was greater than direct heterosis effects on weaning weight (8% vs 5%), but only direct heterosis (13%) influenced birth weight. Within progeny of continental European crossbred cows, calves with a Tarentaise maternal grandsire were lighter at birth, with no significant difference among other maternal grandsire breeds. Maternal breed effects on weaning weight were not significant. Nevertheless, in contemporary years, continental European crossbred cows reared calves that were 10% heavier than calves reared by British crossbred cows. Pacific Northwestern cattle producers could achieve substantial increases in weaning weight from introducing inheritance from continental European dual-purpose breeds into cow herds and calf crops of British ancestry.  相似文献

Pregnancy rate, calving interval, birth weight, weaning weight, and quarterly BCS were collected for 5 consecutive years on 454 fall-calving multiparous British crossbred cattle (3 to 10 yr of age) to evaluate associations of age with BCS and production parameters. Body weight and BCS were collected pre-calving, prebreeding, at weaning, and midway through the second trimester of pregnancy (August). Body condition score was correlated with age during all seasons (P < 0.01). At calving, breeding, and in August, 3-yr-old cows had the lowest BW and BCS, whereas 8-yr-old cows had the greatest. At weaning, these values were maximal in 10-yr-old cows. Pregnancy rate was near 80% up to 9 yr of age but decreased to 57% in 10-yr-old cows. The relationship of pregnancy rate with age appears to be correlated with the BCS decrease at breeding in the older cows, supported by the fact that inclusion of BCS at breeding in the statistical model eliminated the effect of age on pregnancy rate (P = 0.42). Calving interval was longer in 3-yr-old cows compared with 4- to 9-yr-old cows (P = 0.02); however, among older cows, there was little change in the calving interval. Birth weight reached a maximum at 8 yr of age (35 +/- 0.9 kg) and a minimum in 3-yr-old cows (32 +/- 0.7 kg). Birth weights of calves born to both 3- and 4-yr-old cows were lower than for those born to 5-, 6-, 7-, or 8-yr-old cows (P < 0.05). Ten-year-old cows weaned lighter calves (205-d adjusted weaning weight) than younger dams. Furthermore, 3-yr-old cows weaned calves 9 +/- 2.1 and 14 +/- 2.4 kg lighter than 4- and 5-yr-old cows, respectively (P < 0.001). Interpretation of the age analyses of calving interval, birth weight, and weaning weight was independent of the inclusion of BCS in the model. This study documents the effects of age on calving interval, birth weight, and weaning weight that are independent of BCS.  相似文献

A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of postpartum prostaglandin treatment on reproduction in 3 seasonal calving dairy herds. Recently calved lactating dairy cows were paired on herd, age, calving date and previous production index. One cow in each of the 196 pairs received a single intramuscular injection of 25 mg of the prostaglandin analogue, dinoprost, between 14 and 28 days after calving. Subsequent reproduction was monitored. Within each herd and overall, there was no significant effect of treatment on the intervals from calving to first service, mating start date to first service, calving to conception, mating start date to conception and first service to conception. Treatment also had no significant effect on 21-day submission and pregnancy rates, on the proportion of each group not pregnant at the end of mating, and on first service pregnancy rates. Responses to treatment did not vary between cows calving within 50 days of mating start date and earlier calving cows or between cows aged less than 5 years and older cows.  相似文献

AIMS: To determine the sensitivity (Se) and specificity (Sp) of pregnancy diagnosis using transrectal ultrasonography and an ELISA for pregnancy-associated glycoprotein (PAG) in milk, in lactating dairy cows in seasonally calving herds approximately 85–100 days after the start of the herd’s breeding period.

METHODS: Paired results were used from pregnancy diagnosis using transrectal ultrasonography and ELISA for PAG in milk carried out approximately 85 and 100 days after the start of the breeding period, respectively, from 879 cows from four herds in Victoria, Australia. A Bayesian latent class model was used to estimate the proportion of cows pregnant, the Se and Sp of each test, and covariances between test results in pregnant and non-pregnant cows. Prior probability estimates were defined using beta distributions for the expected proportion of cows pregnant, Se and Sp for each test, and covariances between tests. Markov Chain Monte Carlo iterations identified posterior distributions for each of the unknown variables. Posterior distributions for each parameter were described using medians and 95% probability (i.e. credible) intervals (PrI). The posterior median estimates for Se and Sp for each test were used to estimate positive predictive and negative predictive values across a range of pregnancy proportions.

RESULTS: The estimate for proportion pregnant was 0.524 (95% PrI?=?0.485–0.562). For pregnancy diagnosis using transrectal ultrasonography, Se and Sp were 0.939 (95% PrI?=?0.890–0.974) and 0.943 (95% PrI?=?0.885–0.984), respectively; for ELISA, Se and Sp were 0.963 (95% PrI?=?0.919–0.990) and 0.870 (95% PrI?=?0.806–0.931), respectively. The estimated covariance between test results was 0.033 (95% PrI?=?0.008–0.046) and 0.035 (95% PrI?=?0.018–0.078) for pregnant and non-pregnant cows, respectively. Pregnancy diagnosis results using transrectal ultrasonography had a higher positive predictive value but lower negative predictive value than results from the ELISA across the range of pregnancy proportions assessed.

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Pregnancy diagnosis using transrectal ultrasonography and ELISA for PAG in milk had similar Se but differed in predictive values. Pregnancy diagnosis in seasonally calving herds around 85–100 days after the start of the breeding period using the ELISA is expected to result in a higher negative predictive value but lower positive predictive value than pregnancy diagnosis using transrectal ultrasonography. Thus, with the ELISA, a higher proportion of the cows with negative results will be non-pregnant, relative to results from transrectal ultrasonography, but a lower proportion of cows with positive results will be pregnant.  相似文献

During the periparturient period, some impairment of immune defences were observed. Reference values for the different non-specific immune parameters in cows are not generally available, thus limiting the application of these parameters in dairy practice. This paper reports the data on the measurements of different parameters in the blood, and explores the possible influence of the herd on the non-specific immune status of the cow. Five herds located in Northern Italy were selected and overall 39 heifers were enrolled in the trial. Blood samples were taken 14 and 7 days before the expected date of calving, then at 7, 14, 21, 28, 45, 60, and 75 days after calving. The parameters assessed were N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase (NAGase), lysozyme, nitric oxide, superoxide dismutase, haptoglobin, respiratory burst, and serum protein profile. After calving, a significant decrease of respiratory burst and nitric oxide concentration were observed in comparison with the pre-calving values but not with the post-calving samplings. Total proteins, beta- and gamma-globulins showed a progressive and significant increase in concentration after calving, in comparison with pre-calving values. The results of the study confirmed that a decrease of immune functions can be observed in commercial dairy herds in the first four weeks after calving. The amplitude of this phenomenon is not common to all animals and all herds, suggesting the possibility to reduce the impairment by improved management and genetic selection.  相似文献

AIMS: To quantify the effect of treating lactating dairy cows that had histories of periparturient disorders or disease with a single intrauterine infusion of 0.5 g cephapirin, 3-6 weeks prior to the start of the seasonal breeding period. METHODS: Cows (n=690) from spring-calving dairy herds (n=22) were enrolled in a prospective case-control study if they had a history of dystocia, a dead calf at calving or within 24 h of calving, retained foetal membranes (RFM), metabolic disease, twins or a vulval discharge 13 days postpartum. Cows were blocked by age, periparturient condition and calving date, and randomly assigned to be either treated with 0.5 g of cephapirin by intrauterine infusion, or left as untreated controls. Treatment occurred 24-42 days before the planned start of mating (PSM) within each herd. In addition, the reproductive tracts of 91 cows from 4 herds were examined using a vaginal speculum and rectal palpation and cervical-os discharge was scored on a scale from 0 (nil) to 3 (purulent). RESULTS: Overall, more treated cows were retained in the trial herds until pregnancy testing than control cows (p0.05). Average 28-day submission rate was higher (93.1% vs 87.1%; p0.05) and PSM-to-first-service interval was shorter (9+/-1 vs 11+/-1 days; p0.05) in treated than control cows. The percentage of cows not pregnant at the end of the mating period was not affected by treatment overall. However, amongst cows diagnosed with RFM, a dead calf, or vulval discharge, pregnancy rates 28 and 56 days after PSM were higher for treated than control cows (p0.05). Cows with a purulent cervical-os discharge had lower 28-day submission rates (p0.01), lower 28-day pregnancy rates (p0.05) and higher non-pregnant rates at the end of mating than cows with nil or mucoid cervical-os discharges. CONCLUSIONS: Intrauterine treatment with 0.5 g cephapirin improved reproductive performance of dairy cattle, especially those that had a history of RFM, a calf dead at calving or within 24 h of calving, or a vulval discharge.  相似文献

Dairy herd managers have attempted to increase and maintain profits by selectively breeding dairy cattle for high production. Selection for milk production may have resulted in a tendency for greater liveweight (LW) loss postpartum. This study aimed to: (1) determine if excessive LW loss and milk yield in the first 50 days in milk (DIM) was associated with the development of lameness after 50 DIM, and (2) estimate the incidence risk of lameness in this herd attributable to excessive liveweight loss. The dataset comprised details from 564 mixed age cows from a single, seasonally calving, pasture fed dairy herd in New Zealand.  相似文献

AIMS: To determine the effectiveness of intra-rumenal controlled release capsules (CRC) containing 32?g of monensin administered pre-calving to reduce the cumulative incidence of subclinical ketosis (SCK) in mainly pasture-fed dairy cows.

METHODS: Cows (n=837) due to calve in the first 6 weeks of the spring calving period were enrolled from four commercial herds in the Waikato region of New Zealand in a blinded, randomised, negative-controlled field trial. Three weeks before the start of the calving period cows were randomly allocated to receive either no treatment (control) or a single CRC containing monensin and then blood sampled on two occasions, 7 days apart within 12 days following calving for measurement of concentrations of beta hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) in blood. Cows were diagnosed with SCK if the concentration of BHBA in blood in either of these samples was ≥1.2?mmol/L.

RESULTS: Fewer treated cows were diagnosed with SCK within 12 days post-calving than control cows (144/340 (42.4%) vs. 192/336 (57.1%); p<0.001). There was no interaction between treatment group and age, breed or herd of origin. From the final multivariable model it was estimated that treatment with CRC containing monensin reduced the absolute cumulative incidence of SCK by 17.9 (95% CI=9.2–25.8)% compared to no treatment.

CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with a CRC containing monensin >10 days prior to calving reduced the cumulative incidence of SCK of pasture-based dairy cows in commercial dairy herds within 12 days post-calving.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Administration pre-calving of an intra-rumenal bolus containing monensin can be considered as one of a range of management options for the control of SCK in early lactation.  相似文献

A 5-yr study was conducted beginning in 1983 with 460 cows to evaluate the effects of three breeding seasons (30, 45, and 70 d in length) and two times of spring calving, March (early) and April (late), on cattle production under Nebraska Sandhills range conditions. Criteria evaluated included pregnancy and weaning percentages, calving date and distribution, cow weights and body condition at four intervals, calf birth and weaning weights, and cow productivity. The 30-d breeding season included a 10-d estrus synchronization and AI period; in the other breeding seasons only natural breeding was used. The same sires were used over the entire study period. Percentage of cows pregnant and percentage of calves weaned were lower (P less than .01) for cows bred for 30 d than for cows bred for 45 or 70 d. Average calving dates were similar among the breeding groups within the early and late calving herds. Pregnancy rates from AI were higher (P less than .01) for the cows calving in April (64%) than for the cows calving in March (41%). Cows calving in April lost less weight between precalving and prebreeding and were heavier (P less than .05) at prebreeding time than the cows calving in March. Calf weaning weights were not different (P greater than .10) among any of the breeding season groups or between the two calving herds when calves were weaned at a similar age. Cow productivity (calf weaning weight per breeding female) was highest (P less than .05) for the cows bred for 70 d (186 kg), intermediate for the cows bred for 45 d (172 kg), and lowest for cows bred for 30 d (162 kg).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A 3-yr study evaluated late winter (Feb), early spring (Apr), and late spring (Jun) calving systems in conjunction with varied weaning strategies on beef cow and calf performance from Northern Great Plains rangelands. Crossbred cows were randomly assigned to one of three calving systems (on average n= 168.calving system(-1).yr(-1)) and one of two weaning times (Wean 1, 2) within each calving system. The Feb and Apr calves were weaned at 190 and 240 d of age, whereas Jun calves were weaned at 140 and 190 d of age. Breeding by natural service occurred in a 32-d period that included estrous synchronization. Cows were managed throughout the year as appropriate for their calving season. Quantity and quality of hay and supplements were provided based on forage and weather conditions, physiological state of the cows, and available harvested feed resources within a year. After weaning, two-thirds of the early weaned steers were fed in confinement in Montana, and one-third were shipped to Oklahoma and were grazed or fed forage. One-half of the early weaned heifers grazed seeded pastures, and the other half was fed in confinement. Early weaned calves were weighed on approximately the same day as late-weaned calves. Birth weight and overall rate of gain from birth to weaning did not differ for calves from the three calving systems. Calf weaning weight differed by weaning age within calving system (P = 0.001), and calves from the Jun calving system that were weaned at 190 d of age tended (P = 0.06) to be lighter than calves of the same age from the Feb or Apr calving systems. Cow BW change and BCS dynamics were affected by calving system, but the proportion of cows pregnant in the fall was not. Cows suckled until later dates gained less or lost more BW during the 50 d between the first and second weaning than dry cows during this period. The previous year's weaning assignment did not affect production in the following year. Estimated harvested feed inputs were less for the Jun cows than for the Feb and Apr cows. We conclude that season of calving and weaning age affect outputs from rangeland-based beef cattle operations.  相似文献

Data from 1,456 purebred Mashona calves were analysed to determine environmental influences on growth rate and liveweight at birth, weaning (205 days) and 18 months of age. Calves were born between mid-September and mid-December each year. Year of birth was highly significant for all traits (P less than 0.001). Pre-weaning liveweight and weight gain increased as age of dam increased to seven years after which growth tended to decline. Post-weaning compensatory growth was apparent in calves of young dams. Male calves grew faster and were heavier at all stages than female calves (P less than 0.001). Calves from previously non-lactating cows grew more rapidly and were heavier at all ages than those from previously lactating cows. Birth weight increased as calving season advanced and calves born late maintained their growth advantage until 18 months of age. The results indicate that environmental influences experienced in early life persist long after weaning.  相似文献

Progesterone concentrations have been measured in defatted milk of British Friesian cows of four herds during the oestrus cycles (other than short cycles) immediately before artificial insemination (AI) at oestrus and immediately after AI (in non-pregnant cows), and during early pregnancy. Differences in mean progesterone concentrations between herds were significant (P less than 0.05) on all days within the day 10-18 period after AI, both in pregnant and in non-pregnant, inseminated cows but were not significant between pregnant and non-pregnant cows within herds until day 17 or 18. It is concluded that up to this time (that of luteolysis in non-pregnant cows) undefined factors, variable among herds, can have a much greater influence on the rate of progesterone secretion by corpora lutea and consequent progesterone concentration in plasma and milk than does the presence of conceptuses. Maximum mean progesterone concentration reached during early pregnancy in two herds did not differ significantly; it was reached in the 11-15-day period in one herd but not until 46-50 days in the second. Mean progesterone concentration declined after day 90.  相似文献

We investigated the relationship of the stress levels of the dam before and after delivery to that of her offspring soon after birth. Eight pregnant cows were penned 7 days before calving. Blood was taken from the jugular vein of cows at ?7, 1, 2 and 3 days from calving. Blood was also taken from newborn calves at 6 h and 1 and 2 days after birth. Concentrations of cortisol and immunoglobulin G in blood and colostrum were examined. Pearson's correlation coefficient showed that the higher the plasma cortisol concentration of a cow before calving, the higher that of its calf after birth (all P < 0.01). In addition, path analysis demonstrated that the direct effect of the plasma cortisol concentration of the dam before calving on the plasma cortisol concentration of her calf after birth was 0.971 (P < 0.01). However, the colostrum cortisol concentration correlated with neither plasma cortisol concentrations of cows before calving nor that of calves after birth. Unlike cortisol, a clear correlation of immunoglobulin G concentrations in plasma and colostrum was not observed between cows and calves. The results indicate stress is transferred from a cow to her newborn calf not by way of the colostrum but through the placenta.  相似文献

The effects of body condition score (BCS) change and status ante‐ and postpartum (pp) on health and reproductive performance in 234 German Holstein cows from eight dairy farms were evaluated. BCS was determined from 6 weeks antepartum until 20 weeks pp in 2‐week intervals. Three and 5 weeks pp progesterone concentrations in blood serum were determined to detect the presence of luteal tissue as an indicator of cyclicity. The incidence of various diseases, percent cycling cows, reproductive measures and culling rate were assessed. Data were subjected to logistic regression to account for possible herd and lactation number effects. Cows with a low BCS status (<3.0) at calving and during early lactation (4–10 weeks pp) were at a higher risk of suffering from lameness (OR 2.9–9.4), not being cycling at 3 and/or 5 weeks pp (OR 2.24–3.99) and being culled (OR 2.56–2.79) than cows in better body condition (≥3.0) In addition, cows with a low BCS status at parturition were at a higher risk of developing endometritis (OR 2.95) and becoming pregnant later than 105 days pp (OR 5.92) than cows with a BCS ≥ 3.0. At 10 weeks pp, the risk of dystocia (OR 4.10) or retained placenta (OR 2.78) at the preceding calving and not being pregnant at 200 days pp (OR 2.42) was higher in cows with a BCS < 3.0 than with a BCS ≥ 3.0. Cows with no BCS loss antepartum were more likely to have an interval from calving to first artificial insemination of <80 days and <105 days open, to be cycling at 3 and 5 weeks pp and to be pregnant at 200 days pp than cows with a BCS loss of >0.25 (OR 2.44–6.67). Furthermore, cows with no BCS loss from calving to 4 weeks pp had a lower risk of suffering from displaced abomasum than cows with a slight or a severe BCS loss (OR 0.09–0.07 respectively). In conclusion, our results suggest that body condition loss during the antepartal period affected BCS status at parturition and to a certain extent during lactation which was linked to a higher incidence of reproductive disorders and lameness, a higher culling rate and lower reproductive performance.  相似文献

This article describes a study of the behaviour of double muscled Belgian Blue (BB) cows during the peri partum period to assess the differences in pain perception in cows calving per vaginam vs cows delivering by caesarean section (CS). In one herd, a total of 30 multiparous cows, of which 17 delivered by CS and 13 calved per vaginam , were closely observed at approximately 1 month before calving and at days 1, 3 and 14 after parturition. The main behavioural indicators of pain were alertness, transition in posture from standing to lying and vice versa, aggressive behaviour, vocalization, rumination quality, reaction on wound and vulva pressure and the percentage of visible eye-white. The main significant differences were lower overall activity and more transition in posture in animals that delivered by CS than in cows that calved naturally. Less time was spent on eating and ruminating in the CS group, their total resting time was longer and their total standing time was shorter. These significant differences were only observed on the first day after calving. Cows of the CS group reacted significantly more when pressure was put on the left flank on the first, third and fourteenth day after calving, whereas animals that calved per vaginam showed more reaction when pressure was put on the area around the vulva, but only on the first day. Based on the results of the present study, we can conclude that there are some significant short-term behavioural differences between BB cows that calve naturally and those that deliver by CS, but in general, the differences are subtle and of short duration.  相似文献

Oestrus during pregnancy in the cow   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Forty-three oestruses were observed in 35 pregnant cows in one beef suckler herd and 17 dairy herds; at each oestrus the pregnant cow stood willingly to be mounted by another cow or bull. Such oestruses were observed at all stages of pregnancy, although more often between 121 and 240 days, occurred more than once per pregnancy and were also seen in successive pregnancies. On one farm where the dairy cows were observed for four 30 minute periods daily, oestrus was recorded in 5.7 per cent of pregnant cows. The behavioural signs associated with oestrus during pregnancy were indistinguishable from those of true oestrus in non-pregnant animals and although its duration was shorter (mean 5.6 hours), its intensity was comparable to that of the true oestrus. Pregnant cows showing oestrus were usually seen interacting with other oestrous cows in the sexually active group. Pregnant cows showing oestrus had a higher mean condition score (3.9 +/- 0.64) than control pregnant cows (3.0 +/- 0.36). Physiological changes in the genital tract normally associated with true oestrus were not observed in pregnant cows showing oestrus. There was no ovulation or metoestrous bleeding. The characteristics of cervical mucus, including ferning patterns, were similar to those of pregnant cows at the same stage of pregnancy. Hormonal changes associated with oestrus in non-pregnant cows were not observed in the pregnant cows exhibiting oestrus. Seven of nine pregnant cows at oestrus stood willingly to be mounted by a bull. On seven occasions, bulls exposed only to cervical mucus from pregnant cows showing oestrus did not display flehmen.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Of 314 calvings, there were 67 (21.4%) abnormally terminated pregnancies (ATP), 37 of which were abortions, 19 stillbirths and 11 premature calvings. Forty-nine cows with ATP were matched to normally calving herd mates and their milk production data and fertility indices were compared. The ATP were associated with complete failure of lactation in 21 (42%) cases and with short lactation lengths of less than 200 days in nine (18.3%) cases. Lactation in the remaining 19 (38.7%) cows was characterized by a low lactation yield of 2318 ± 211 kg and lactation length 296 ± 13 days. Corresponding parameters for the control herd mates were 3250 ± 190 kg and 314 ± 12 days, respectively. The number of days to first service services per conception and calving interval cows with ATP were 139 ± 17 days, 2.29 ± 0.15 and 465 ± 23,days, respectively. Corresponding fertility indices in the control group were 107 ± 9 days, 1.83 |+- 4.18 and 407 ± 12 days, respectively. Also 11 of 49 (22.3%) cows, with ATP were culled because of infertility witcompared with only five (10.2%) in the controls.

Twenty-six other cows with ATP were randomly difided into two groups. In Group 1, 14 cows were treated with 100 ml of 6% colloidal iodine (Merckojod®, Bayer, Leverkusen, Germany), 40–50 days after calving followed by a prostaglandin F2 analogue (Estrumate®, ICI, Cheshire, UK) 20 days later. In Group 2, 12 cows were left untreated and served as a control. Treatment reduced the interval to First service by 63 days and the calving interval by 79 days and it increased services per conception by 0.38. No culling was recorded from this group. ATP not only denied a calf to the farm but also reduced milk production. Intrauterine administration of colloidal iodine coupled with PGF2 could bring ATP animals to near normal fertility.  相似文献
