Summary As for other forage crops the notion of variety is quite recent in lucerne (Medicago sativa L.). Up to 1950 in France, farmers cultivated landraces whose origins were geographically defined. Seed production was a by-product of forage production. Usually, seeds were harvested on the second or third crop, in old lucerne fields. Natural selection created landraces adapted to local conditions. In some years, climatic conditions, especially in northern regions, were unfavourable to seed production. In the exchanges and trades of seeds between French regions, the genetic origin of the seeds was omitted, the geographical origin was only mentioned. Even if France usually exported lucerne seeds, imports occurred in bad years. Seeds were imported from European countries and from North and South America. Varieties from America were poorly adapted to the French conditions for forage production. These foreign varieties have probably intercrossed with the local landraces but no data is available to know to what extent. Among the various French landraces, five main types were defined using morphological characters: Flamande in the north, three types (Poitou, Marais de Luçon, Marais de Challans) in the west, and Provence in the south. These landraces have been widely used in breeding since 1950. Even though these five landraces are, up to now, maintained, the other landraces have probably been lost (no more cultivated and not in genebanks), replaced by registered varieties.  相似文献

Summary Thornless Evergreen (TE) blackberry (Rubus laciniatus Willd.) is a periclinal chimera in which the epidermis has mutated to thornlessness (designated t), while the internal portions of the plant remain genetically thorny (tTT). Over 300 ex vitro plants (from shoot tip cultures of TE) were established in the field and observed over two fruiting seasons for various vegetative traits and fruiting characteristics. Both parental types and variants were included in the field plantings. Plants were evaluated for growth habit, vigor, flowering, and fruiting traits. Continuous variation for growth habit, vigor, flower number, and fertility was observed. Some of the variation could be explained in terms of chimeral segregation (pure thornless vs. chimeral types). Tissue culture-induced (somaclonal) variation was assumed to be the source of most of the other variation.  相似文献

Summary F1 hybrids between short-day photoperiod- sensitive maiwa bulrush millet, Pennisetum americanum (2n=14), and elephant grass, P. purpureum (2n=28), are triploid (2n=21), sterile, and can only be propagated vegetatively. Fertile amphidiploids, (2n=42, with 21 bivalents) were produced by colchicine treatment. Good seed set was obtained upon selfing the amphidiploids and the progeny exhibited variable pollen fertility and bivalent univalent and multivalent formation.Reciprocal crosses between elephant grass and the colchicine-induced amphidiploid failed to produce seeds. The maiwa millet x amphidiploid cross resulted in poor seed set and the reciprocal failed. Maiwa x amphidiploid hybrids were pollen sterile with 2n=21, rather than the expected 2n=28, indicating chromosome elimination.Morphologically, the amphidiploids and maiwa x amphidiploid hybrids closely resembled elephant grass and the F1 hybrid. The amphidiploids showed no superiority over the F1 hybrid and elephant grass in either forage yield or quality but one maiwa x amphidiploid genotype surpassed a promising local elephant grass selection in forage dry matter yield and flowered for a relatively short period.  相似文献

Summary Somaclonal variation from a partially sterile intergeneric hybrid was obtained for sugarcane improvement and for understanding phylogeny. Over 1,000 somaclones were regenerated from callus cultures of intergeneric hybrid clone H83-9998 (2n = ca. 94) involving H62-4671 (Saccharum spp. hybrid, 2n = ca. 115) x 28NG7 (Erianthus arundinaceum, 2n = 60) as parents. One hundred twenty-six somaclones were selected on the basis of observed morphological variation and planted in large plots with the original hybrid and its parental clones for detailed studies. Data were collected for stalk (number, length, diameter), leaf (length, width) and sucrose characters. Obvious variations in dewlap shape, leaf and stalk colors, leaf angle, rhizome habit, and pollen fertility, as well as date of flowering, were recorded. Chromosome and isozyme analyses were conducted to confirm that the observed phenotypic variation among somaclones had a genetic basis. Chromosome numbers of somaclones selected on the basis of phenotypic variation ranged from 2n = 66 to 2n = 109. With isozyme analysis, 1 to 4 band variations in three systems (peroxidase, phosphoglucomutase, and phosphoglucoisomerase) were found. Significant genetic variance estimates (G2/P2) and genetic CVs (6.7–25.6%) indicate that the differences observed among somaclonal variants would likely remain stable in additional asexually propagated cycles. Yield was estimated from stalk volume x refractometer solids, and 9 out of 126 somaclones produced higher estimates yield than the hybrid. One somaclone showed estimated yield that was not significantly different from the Saccharum parent.Published as Paper No. 737 in the Journal Series of the Experiment Station, Hawaiian Sugar Planter's Association, Aiea, HI 96701.  相似文献

Summary The inheritance of root rot resistance in red raspberry, caused by Phytophtora fragariae var. rubi, was investigated using two experimental breeding designs. Design A was not randomly mated and genetic parameters could not be calculated. Design B was therefore randomly mated to make it possible to do such estimations. Considerable genetic variation was associated with the recorded traits on seedlings tested in a glasshouse. Disease index and % survival were both found to be highly heritable with broad sense heritabilities (H2) close to 0.9 in each design. Estimates of narrow sense heritability (h2), indicated that progress towards resistance would be moderate. In the first design the cultivars Festival, Asker, Boyne and Sentry and the clones N85-02-13 and N85-06-140 had high general combining abilities. Some crosses had a high specific combining ability indicating the presence of non-additive genetic variation.  相似文献

Summary In the early 1980s the phenomenon of somaclonal variation induced by cell culture was exploited to produce genetic variation in linseed. The linseed variety Andro, derived from the widely grown Canadian variety McGregor, was selected in saline culture and was released for production in Canada. Andro possesses traits very different from its parent, such as increased seedling vigour and tolerance to heat stress. Additional stable somaclonal variation in characters such as yield, days to maturity, seed weight and oil content were subsequently induced in McGregor. However, despite extensive screening of the somaclonal variants, no significant variation in the fatty acid profile was found.Chemical mutagenesis using ethyl methanesulphonate was, however, succesful in modifying the fatty acid profile of McGregor. Initial screening of M2 seed by the thiobarbituric acid colourimetric procedure was followed by gas chromatography to select half-seeds with atypical fatty acid profiles. Two independent, partially dominant genes were identified that were responsible for reducing the linolenic acid (18 : 3) from 50% to 2% while increasing linoleic acid (18 : 2) to 70%. A single, partially dominant gene, inherited independently of the linolenic acid genes, increased palmitic acid (16 : 0) from 7% to 30% and palmitoleic acid (16 : 1) from trace amounts to 4%. Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of linseed has also been successful. Herbicide tolerance genes for glyphosate, sulfonylurea and phosphinothricin have been incorporated into Canadian varieties. Commercially useful levels of tolerance to sulfonylurea herbicides have been achieved with no adverse agronomic affect. It is expected that a transgenic variety containing this resistance will be registered for commercial production in Canada in 1994.Standard breeding techniques, the application of antisense technology and the overexpression of fatty acid synthesis genes are being used to further modify the fatty acid profile of linseed, as well as for the transfer of abiotic stress-related genes identified in bromegrass.  相似文献

Summary Inheritance of raw cucumber fruit texture (Magness-Taylor Fruit Pressure Tester firmness) was investigated over a 4-year period from 1971–1974. Results from 2 separate but related experiments suggested that firmness was quantitatively inherited with sufficient additive effects to permit gain from selection. In a selection study within 4 F2 populations derived from crosses between firm (Chipper and Gy3) and soft (Mincu and Green F) fruit type cultivars, variation among and within F3 and F4 families was significant but overall family means were not significantly higher than the high parent in any of the 4 crosses. Narrow sense heritability estimates for fruit texture were 0.80 in the Mincu × Chipper population and 0.77 in the Green F × Chipper, Mincu × Gy3, and Gy3 × Green F crosses. In a separate experiment, generation means analysis was used to assess the mode of gene action in 2 crosses: Green F × Chipper, and Gy3 × Green F. Additive genetic effects accounted for 98.8% and 99.3% of the total genetic variation within each cross, respectively.Scientific Journal Series Paper No. 9794.  相似文献

Summary Selections of four maturity classes developed from within each of three commercial varieties of Rhodes grass, Mbarara, Masaba and Pokot, were assessed for yield of PGS (pure germinating seed), speed of establishment after sowing, total dry matter yield and dry matter yield under frequent clipping (persistence), over three years. The range in heading date between the selections was well outside the range of the original varieties. The best selection with the highest overall response was the early-heading selection developed out of Mbarara with a 127% gain in PGS yield, 75% gain in dry matter yield three months after sowing, 11% gain in overall dry matter yield and 17% gain in dry matter yield under frequent clipping, compared with the standard Mbarara.Mbarara entries were the best in PGS yield, herbage yield and % dry matter. Masaba entries were better in persistence, while the late-heading Pokot entries were the poorest in PGS yield, herbage yield and persistence.Within varieties, yield of PGS dropped progressively and sharply in later maturity classes, whereas dry matter yields were largely unaffected by heading date. Thus late-heading selections dropped below the standard varieties in PGS yield but remained above the standard varieties in dry matter yield.Early-heading selections were generally more persistent than late-heading selections.  相似文献

Summary Entire plants have recently been regenerated from frozen cultures of protoplasts, cells, tissues and organs and stored at super-low temperatures for various lengths of time. This suggests the possibility of utilizing cryogenic methods for the conservation of important and rare germplasm, especially of the vegetatively propagated plants, which at present do not have any satisfactory method for their preservation. In addition, the freeze preservation offers a number of significant uses and prospects; (i) tissue cultures often show chromosomal variations, nuclear and ploidy changes, and mutations. Such genetic variables and cell lines which do not occur in nature can be picked out, banked and used in response to research needs; (ii) to maintain a cell line, it has to be transferred to a fresh medium periodically; the freeze storage would suppress cell division and thus the need for subculturing is avoided; (iii) at super-low temperatures the cells are in a non-metabolic state, which delays or virtually stops the ageing process, and thus the morphogenetic potential of cultures is retained; (iv) pathogen-free stocks could be frozen, revived and propagated when desired, this would be ideal for the international exchange of such materials; and (v) the freezing of pollen would solve some of the problems encountered with the incompatibility and pollen longevity.Ever increasing population pressures demand improving and evolving new cultivars. However, with this enthusiastic search for obtaining new plants, and rapid increase in their number, it is not only becoming difficult but at times impossible to maintain or preserve some of the stocks which at present, are not needed for breeding purposes. Thus, some of the germplasm which may not seem to be of importance today, but might be needed in future, is ignored or completely lost. Therefore it is for the purpose of preservation of materials which are threatened with extinction that Germplasm Banks need to be established. It is envisaged that freeze storage and tissue cultures would be a meaningful tool in experimental biology and agricultural research for the preservation and international exchange of important and pathogen-free germplasm.  相似文献

Summary In an intervarietal cross between IR 8 and Wanar 1, inheritance of pigmentation in coleoptile, leaf-sheath, auricle, node, internode, septum and glume was studied. A pleiotropic gene conditioning pigment in all these parts has been identified which may probably be one of the basic genes for anthocyanin pigmentation. A linkage group consisting of genes causing pigment in these seven organs has been indicated in this sequence: Pau-Pc-Pn-Psh-Pin-Pg-Pm. This group may form part of the III Sp group of Misro et al. (1966) (corresponding to the A linkage group of japonica) in which case Pau, Pc, Pn and Pg are additions to this group. Linkage relationship of genes for coleoptile colour is reported for the first time.  相似文献

Summary The F2's from crosses between Dyfed (S.240; a black grained cultivar) and monosomics of Sun II (non-black cultivar) were analysed. With the exception of F2 progenies involving monosomes, II, VI, VII, X, XI, XII, XIII and XIV, all other deviated from the genetic ratio 3 black: 1 non-black. The cytological examination of the non-black individuals belonging to those families that did not deviate from the 3:1 ratio showed that they were either 41- or 42-chromosome plants. However, non-black individuals involving monosome XIV were 40-chromosome plants. The gene conferring the black colour to the grains in Avena sativa cv. Dyfed (S.240) is located on chromosome XIV.Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, Sind Agriculture University. Tando Jam. Pakistan.  相似文献

Summary The objective was to study the genetic basis of bolting and stem length in sugar beet full-sibs, developed by a factorial mating design (N.C. design II). The extent to which the inheritance of these characters can be attributed to the additive and non-dominance variation was investigated. The genetic analysis consisted of three sets (4×10, 4×8, and 3×8) of progenies. Estimates of additive genetic variance (2 A) and variance due to dominance deviations with some fractions of epistatic variance (2 D) were obtained for both characters. Bolting had a relatively large proportion of total genetic variance accounted for by 2 A. In most cases, non-additive effects were also important in determining the type of gene action in bolting. Stem length showed similar genetic variation to bolting susceptibility. Bolting resistance seemed to be dominant to the bolting susceptibility in most cases. Narrow sense heritability estimated for bolting was generally very large (0.93 to 0.96), which suggests that early generation selection for bolting resistance in a sugar beet population would be successful.  相似文献

Summary Pyrethrum is grown for the insecticidal pyrethrins, extracted from the dried and ground flowers. It is a cross-fertilizing, self-incompatible perennial plant, which can be propagated vegetatively. The genetic variation of several, commercially important, characteristics was studied. The range of observed variation is very wide for fresh flower yield, flower size, number of flowers per stem, pyrethrins content, lodging resistance and the Pyrethrins I/Pyrethrins II ratio, and quite narrow for the dry matter content of the flowers. Populations to select from are obtained by crossing two (single crosses) or more clones (polycrosses). The genotypic variation of two single and one polycross (42 clones) was studied. The single crosses showed, for the three characteristics measured, pyrethrins content, flower size and Py. I/Py. II ratio, a considerable transgression. The progeny means were very similar to the mid-parent values. This indicates a polygenic inheritance for these traits. The variation of the polycross for these three traits was not greater than those of the two single crosses, suggesting a very high level of heterozygosity in the parental clones. It is in fact possible to reconstitute a large part of the genotypic variation observed in Kenya from only a very few single crosses. In view of the selection relationships between traits were investigated. Flower size appeared negatively related to dry matter content of the flowers and to flower yield. A suspected negative relation between flower yield and pyrethrins content could not be confirmed. The results indicate, that large genetic improvements are possible in a fairly short time.  相似文献

Summary Inheritance of resistance to turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) strains C1, C2, C3, C4, and C5 in Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris subsp. pekinensis) was evaluated using monoclonal antibodies. Crosses were made between a resistant line, 0–2, and four susceptible line. Seoul (SE),SSD31 (SS), Cheongbang (CH), and Yaki 1 ho (YA), to determine the inheritance of resistance of 0–2 in different genetic backgrounds. Resistance to TuMV was controlled by a single dominant gene or double dominant genes depending on the strain and cross. The resistance genes of 0–2 were modified by susceptible parents such that a single dominant gene was involved in the SS×0–2 combination, but double dominant genes in the SE×0–2 against TuMV-C3 or TuMV-C5. ELISA tests using inoculated and noninoculated leaves in the same plant suggested that the dominant resistance genes inhibit virus movement rather than virus multiplication.  相似文献

Summary Fourteen cultivars, one F1-hybrid and one half-wild type (Cind) of sweet pepper were tested on resistance to glasshouse whitefly. Several mutually significant levels of resistance were found. Most resistant appeared to be California Wonder, Severka M, Korál and Yolo Wonder. During the test sweet pepper plants were infested both with whiteflies and their parasite — Encarsia formosa, which caused the blackening of whitefly puparia. The blackened puparia are easily seen, enabling an easier and more rapid evaluation of the number of puparia present.  相似文献

Summary Established Western European black currant cultivars are susceptible to Dasyneura tetensi but the Scandinavian Sunderbyn II, Kangosfors and Hedda, and 10 out of 33 Russian cultivars showed very slight or no leaf symptoms of midge attack in the field.Of species within the black currant Section Eucoreosma, Ribes dikuscha, R. pauciflorum (probably=syn R. ussuriense), and R. americanum were not attacked, but an accession of R. bracteosum proved very susceptible. Species within other sections of the genus were not attacked.A strong dominant resistance gene in R. dikuscha, designated Dt, appeared to be linked with (a) gene(s) controlling resistance to American gooseberry mildew, Sphaerotheca mors-uvae. Resistance in Sunderbyn II and, probably, in R. pauciflorumwas oligogenic and dominant.  相似文献

Summary Associations between DNA fingerprint fragments and 16 avocado quantitative trait loci were tested for in two avocado tamilies by one way analysis of variance and multiple regression analysis. Based on these two analyses the fragments P4, P8, E2 and E5 in Pinkerton × Ettinger progeny were found to be associated with harvest duration, skin color, skin thickness and skin surface, respectively. The fragments P1, P8, B1 and B4 in the Pinkerton × Bacon progeny (half sibs of the original population) were found to be associated with fruit weight, skin color, seed size and peeling, respectively. Based on the original Pinkerton progeny as well as on the half sibs progeny, the fragment P8 was found to be associated with black-purple fruit skin color. The fragment pattern intensity of DNA pools of progeny having either green or black-purple fruit skin color —supported these data. These results are interpreted as genetic-linkage between the DNA fingerprint fragment P8 and locas (1) regulating fruit skin color in avocado.  相似文献

Summary Seedling resistance to wheat stem rust was determined in populations of wild emmer wheat, Triticum dicoccoides, and characterized by means of ecological factors and allozyme genotypes. Reactions to wheat stem rust were studied in 102 single plant accessions of T. dicoccoides from ten populations by inoculation with Puccinia graminis tritici race 14, isolate GSR-739. Six populations displayed different degrees of response polymorphism with reactions ranging from high resistance to complete susceptibility, whereas four populations contained only susceptible plants. In some of the accession, unexplained intrasib variation in resistance and intraplant variation of infection-types were found. Resistance to stem rust was negatively correlated with two ecological factors, altitude and number of Sharav (hot-dry) days which are unfavorable to disease development. Variation in stem rust response was shown to exist in ecogeographic regions where climatic variables enhanced the development of the fungus, conceivably maintained by natural selection. Likewise, allozyme genotypes, single or in multiple loci combinations, appeared to be associated with resistance or susceptibility to rust. Such association need to be verified by genetic studies in order to become established as useful markers.  相似文献

Summary The extent of mitochondrial DNA restriction fragment length polymorphisms among individual plant samples of perennial ryegrass was determined. A total of 72 plants from three cultivars Yorktown II, S23 and Riikka were surveyed using three restriction enzymes (BamHI,EcoRI andHindIII) and three mitochondrial gene probes (coxI, coxIII andnad9). Polymorphisms were noted within each of the two cultivars Yorktown II and S23, whereas in Riikka no variation was detected. It seems most likely that the mitochondrial genome diversity within the same cultivar has resulted from non-homogeneous ancestor cytoplasms. The hybridization-based assay employed is simple to perform, gives unambiguous results, and may thus be used in mass screening of perennial ryegrass populations for breeding purpose.  相似文献

Ten snap beans (Barrier, Brio, Carson, Cornell 502, CT 70, HB 1880, Hystyle, Labrador, Opus and Venture) were selected for differential temperature tolerance and used as parents in a complete diallel mating design. The 45 F1 hybrid lines (with reciprocals) and parents were screened at 32 C day/28 C night, and in a separate experiment, 16 C day/10 C night, during reproductive development in replicated controlled environments. Variation for yield under temperature treatments was observed among parents and hybrids, with certain hybrids exceeding parental performance. Significant (P 0.0001) general combining ability (GCA), and significant (P 0.05) specific combining ability (SCA) were observed for yield components including pod number, seed number, and seeds per pod. There was evidence that pod number and seeds per pod under temperature stress are under separate genetic control. Reciprocal effects and heterosis were not significant. GCA could not be predicted from parental performance. The breeding line Cornell 502 had the highest GCA under high temperature, and the cultivar Brio had the highest GCA under low temperature. The cross Brio × Venture was high yielding in both temperature treatments. Heat tolerance and chilling tolerance were associated in certain parents and hybrids. However, performance under high and low temperature treatments was not generally correlated in the parents and hybrids, indicating that these traits should be selected separately.  相似文献
