In the present study the external morphology of semi-engorged Rhipicephalus sanguineus females ticks from Brazil and Argentina were compared by scanning electron microscopy. Many differences were detected among the R. sanguineus collected at the two localities, such as body size, shape of the genital pore, and morphology of the sensory structures. All these characteristics are fundamental for the diagnosis of species of the genus Rhipicephalus and thus indicate the need for further comparisons and, the taxonomical revision of this species of tick in the Neotropics.  相似文献

Two strains of Rhipicephalus sanguineus acquired Ehrlichia canis by feeding as either larvae or nymphs on acutely infected dogs and, in subsequent instars, transmitted the agent to normal dogs. Three strains of R sanguineus transmitted E canis as adults after their larval and nymphal stages fed on infected dogs. More than 400 adult female ticks were fed on infected dogs as larvae or nymphs or both, but none transmitted E canis transovarially.  相似文献

Two isolates of Beauveria bassiana and one of Purpureocillium lilacinum (=Paecilomyces lilacinus) were found infecting Amblyomma cajennense engorged females collected on horses (0.15% infection rate from a total of 1982 specimens) and another two isolates of P. lilacinum and one Metarhizium anisopliae detected in soils (2.1% from 144 samples) collected in typical pasture habitats of this tick in Central Brazil from October 2009 to March 2011. Fungi were isolated from soils with Rhipicephalus sanguineus as surrogate baits. No fungi were found in ticks or soils during the driest months (May to August). Testing pathogenicity of fungi all R. sanguineus females were killed regardless of the isolate and fungi sporulated abundantly on the cadavers. A. cajennense was less susceptible to infection with P. lilacinum within 20 days than R. sanguineus. All three fungal species probably act as natural antagonists of A. cajennense particularly in the rainy season and have interest for integrate control of vectors of Rocky Mountain spotted fever.  相似文献

It has been speculated that ticks may serve as vectors of Bartonella species. Circumstantial, clinical, epidemiological and serological evidence suggest that B. vinsonii subspecies berkhoffii (B. v. berkhoffii) might be transmitted by Rhipicephalus sanguineus. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether adult R. sanguineus ticks can be infected with a B. v. berkhoffii genotype II isolate via capillary tube feeding and whether the infection can then be transmitted from adult females to their eggs via trans-ovarial transmission. Furthermore, tick fecal material was also collected and screened as a possible source of infectious inoculum for canine infections. B. v. berkhoffii DNA was detected in 50% (7 of 14) of females that did not oviposit and in 14.3% (2 of 14) of female ticks that laid eggs, but not detected in egg clutches (100 eggs/female). DNA was also detected in tick feces collected on days 2 through 6 post-capillary tube feeding, however, dogs (n=3) did not become bacteremic or seroconvert when inoculated with tick fecal material. Therefore, trans-ovarial transmission of B. v. berkhoffii by R. sanguineus is unlikely, but further studies are needed to determine if tick fecal material can serve as a source of infection to canines.  相似文献

Calea serrata (Asteraceae) is an endemic Southern Brazilian plant species used for religious and medicinal purposes. Previous study revealed the presence of chromenes, a class of natural compounds that possess insecticidal properties. This study reports the effect of the hexane extract from the aerial parts of this plant on egg hatchability, egg production and mortality rates of newly hatched larvae of the cattle tick Boophilus microplus. Larvae of Rhipicephalus sanguineus, the brown dog tick, received the same treatment. The extract was toxic to the eggs of B. microplus and to the larvae of both B. microplus and R. sanguineus.  相似文献

A 24 kd protein from Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Rs24p) which was common to larvae, nymphs, male and female whole body and salivary gland extract of males and female was detected specifically in the serum from dogs after repeated infestation with adult R. sanguineus. The duration of antibodies against Rs24p in dogs infested with adults was examined by Western blotting analysis. Anti-Rs24p antibody was detected in two of 4 dogs during the period of 40 days in the first infestation. In the second infestation, all dogs showed positive reaction against Rs24p, but the duration of the antibodies varied greatly among the animals.  相似文献

The cattle rickettsia Anaplasma marginale is distributed worldwide and is transmitted by about 20 tick species, but only Rhipicephalus simus, a strictly African tick species, has been shown to transmit the vaccine strain of A. centrale. The aim of the present study was to examine transmission of field strains of A. marginale and of the vaccine strain of A. centrale by three tick species -Hyalomma excavatum, Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) annulatus - to susceptible calves. Two genetically distinct Israeli field strains of A. marginale, tailed and non-tailed (AmIsT and AmIsNT, respectively), were efficiently transmitted by R. sanguineus, whereas H. excavatum transmitted only the tailed isolate, and R. (Boophilus) annulatus did not transmit A. marginale. None of the three tick species transmitted A. centrale. By means of msp1a primers in PCR assays, amplicons of similar sizes were obtained from either A. marginale-infected calves that were used for acquisition feeding, from R. sanguineus fed on the infected calves, or from calves to which anaplasmosis had been successfully transmitted by these ticks. Although an A. centrale-specific fragment was amplified from salivary glands of R. sanguineus, no transmission to susceptible cattle occurred during 3 months of observation, and anaplasmosis was not induced in splenectomized calves that were subinoculated with blood from calves on which R. sanguineus had fed.  相似文献

Rhipicephalus sanguineus, commonly known as the brown dog tick, is a three-host tick that feeds primarily on dogs and occasionally on other hosts, including humans. R. sanguineus ticks are widely distributed around the world and they are known vectors of pathogens, such as Babesia canis, Ehrlichia canis, and Rickettsia conorii. The increasing number of cases of human parasitism by R. sanguineus ticks reported in the literature indicates that the interaction between humans and R. sanguineus ticks may be more common than it is actually recognized. The indiscriminate use of acaricides is an emerging problem worldwide and has led to the selection of acaricide resistant tick strains. In this article, the medical and veterinary importance, taxonomy, biology, and ecology of R. sanguineus ticks around the world are reviewed. It also discusses the current strategies for the control of R. sanguineus, highlighting the potential risks associated to the improper use of acaricides, such as environmental pollution and toxicity to humans and other non-target organisms (e.g., tick predators).  相似文献

The molecular profile of 30 Moraxella bovis strains, recovered from outbreaks of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay between 1974 and 2001, was determined through randomly applied polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. Molecular profiles of nine strains recovered after 1990 varied from those recovered before 1990. The profiles of 13 strains (48%) differed from those of three vaccinal strains extensively used since 1984 in Argentina and Uruguay. Eight Argentinean strains, one from Brazil and two from Uruguay had identical RAPD profiles. Strains belonging to different serogroups had identical RAPD profiles, demonstrating that this technique was not able to discriminate among strains with low cross-reactivity indices. RAPD may be helpful in the primary characterization of M. bovis strains, but it does not replace serological characterization.  相似文献

Rhipicephalus sanguineus is the most widespread tick in the world, being able to survive under different climate conditions. In this study, the longevity of R. sanguineus was investigated under laboratory and natural climate conditions in southern Italy. Moreover, the reproductive fitness of females after overwintering was assessed. In the environment, unfed larvae, nymphs and adults were able to survive for up to 34, 40 and 385 days, respectively. However, the longevity of larvae (44 days), nymphs (54 days) and adults (584 days) in the laboratory was longer. Adult ticks that had overwintered under natural climate conditions were able to feed and give rise to viable larvae, after 40 weeks of starvation. Thereby, it is demonstrated that R. sanguineus is able to overwinter in southern Italy, without any prejudice to its fitness. These findings advance our knowledge on the natural history of R. sanguineus in nature and provide new insights into the epidemiology of certain tick-borne diseases in southern Europe as well as into the risk for their introduction in northern European countries.  相似文献

Shiga toxin (Stx)-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) strains isolated from animals and food in Argentina (n=44) and Brazil (n=20) were examined and compared in regard to their phenotypic and genotypic characteristics to evaluate their pathogenic potential. The clonal relatedness of STEC O157 isolates (n=22) was established by phage typing (PT) and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). All O157 strains studied carried eae and enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC)-hly sequences. In Argentina, these strains occurred both in cattle and meat, and 50% of them carried stx2/stx2vh-a genes, whereas in Brazil the O157 strains were isolated from animals, and most harbored the stx2vh-a sequence. At least 13 different O:H serotypes were identified among the non-O157 strains studied, with serotype O113:H21 being found in both countries. All but one non-O157 strains did not carry eae gene, but EHEC-hlyA gene was found in 85.7% of them, and the stx2 genotype was also more prevalent in Argentina than in Brazil (P<0.01), where stx1 alone or in association was most common (68.8%). One STEC strain isolated from a calf in Brazil harbored the new variant referred to as stx2-NV206. PFGE analysis showed that STEC O157 strains were grouped in four clusters. One Brazilian strain was considered possibly related (> or =80%) to Argentinean strains of cluster I. Differences in the pathogenic potential, especially in regard to serotypes and stx genotypes, were observed among the STEC strains recovered from animals and food in both countries.  相似文献

DNA sequences of Amblyomma aureolatum (Pallas, 1772) and Amblyomma ovale Koch, 1844 were obtained to determine genetic differences between these tick species. Collections of these species are discussed in relation to distribution and hosts. Seven ticks collections (four from Brazil, one from Argentina, one from Uruguay and one from USA) house a total of 1272 A. aureolatum (224 males, 251 females, 223 nymphs and 574 larvae) and 1164 A. ovale (535 males, 556 females, 66 nymphs and 7 larvae). The length of the sequenced mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene fragment for A. aureolatum was 370bp and for A. ovale was 373bp. The DNA sequence analysis showed a 13.1% difference between the two species. Apart from one male A. ovale found on a toad, all adult ticks were found on mammals. The majority of adult specimens of both tick species were removed from Carnivora (96.1 and 84.3% of A. aureolatum and A. ovale, respectively), especially from dogs (53.1% of A. aureolatum, and 46.4% of A. ovale). Collections on wild Canidae were higher for A. aureolatum (23.3%) than for A. ovale (7.1%). On the other hand, collections of A. ovale adults on wild Felidae were higher (18.3%) than findings of A. aureolatum (9.2%). The contribution of other mammalian orders as hosts for adults of A. aureolatum and A. ovale was irrelevant, with the exception of Perissodactyla because Tapiridae contributed with 13.0% of the total number of A. ovale adults. Adults of both tick species have been found occasionally on domestic hosts (apart of the dog) and humans. Most immature stages of A. aureolatum were found on Passeriformes birds, while rodents and carnivores were the most common hosts for nymphs and larvae of A. ovale. A. aureolatum has been found restricted to the Neotropical region, covering the eastern area of South America from Uruguay to Surinam, including northeastern Argentina, eastern Paraguay, southeastern Brazil and French Guiana. A. ovale showed a distribution that covers the Neotropical region from central-northern Argentina throughout the Neotropics into the Nearctic region of Mexico with a few records from the USA, also with collection sites in Paraguay, Bolivia, most Brazilian states, Peru, Ecuador, French Guiana, Surinam, Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Belize, Guatemala and several states of Mexico.  相似文献

The brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Acari: Ixodidae), transmits several diseases among dogs including Ehrlichia canis infection. The role of Rhipicephalus sanguineus as a biologic vector for E platys, the rickettsial agent of infectious canine cyclic thrombocytopenia, was studied in dogs. Laboratory-cultured, pathogen-free nymph ticks were fed to repletion on dogs acutely infected with E platys. Tick engorgement coincided with the development of initial parasitemia and thrombocytopenia in the infected dogs. Following repletion, nymph ticks were allowed to molt under controlled conditions. One-month-old E platys-exposed adult ticks failed to infect naive dogs in animal transmission studies. The presence of E platys was not detected in midguts or salivary glands of similarly exposed adult ticks by use of light and transmission electron microscopy. These studies indicate that R sanguineus may not transmit E platys infection.  相似文献

SUMMARY Experiments were done to explore the possible relationship between cattle, Australian dog ticks (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) and Anaplasma marginale. Calves' ears were exposed to larval, nymphal and adult ticks on 8, 9 and 7 occasions, respectively. The immature instars fed readily, but the adults attached very poorly to calves. Transtadial transmission of A. marginale was achieved on 6 occasions from 9 attempts: ticks infected as larvae or nymphs were able to transmit at the subsequent stage or stages. Transovarial transmission was not achieved. Six calves supported more than one infestation of ticks. Attached ticks caused the calves no apparent discomfort and calves developed no noticeable skin reactions. An abattoir survey of 200 hides detected no R. sanguineus.  相似文献

Antibodies against the 24 kDa Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Rs24p) protein were detected by ELISA to evaluate the relationship between antibodies and tick infestation. The mean titer of 3 dogs that underwent 2 experimental infestations with adult ticks was transiently increased after the second infestation. There was a significant difference in mean titers between positive control dogs naturally infested with ticks and tick-naive dogs. These results suggested that anti-Rs24p antibodies detected by ELISA are a marker of tick exposure. There was no significant difference in mean titers between tick-naive dogs and seropositive dogs to Ehrlichia canis. Some dogs positive for E. canis antibodies showed, however, higher titers than most tick-naive dogs. R. sanguineus may be related to the E. canis infection in Japan.  相似文献

A total of 27 ticks, comprising Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Latreille) (n = 21), Haemaphysalis leachi (Andouin) (n = 4) and Haemaphysalis paraleachi (Camicas, Hoogstraal & El Kammah) (n = 2) were recovered from two clinically healthy female dogs in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. DNA of Anaplasma platys was detected in a female R. sanguineus, using primers derived from the 16S rRNA gene, which amplify members of the family Anaplasmataceae . Anaplasma platys DNA was also detected in the blood of one of the dogs. Phylogenetic analysis based on partial sequences of the 16S rRNA, the gltA and the groEL genes ranged the detected agent within the Anaplasma clade. This is the first reported detection of A. platys in ticks in Africa. This finding raises the question of the possible involvement of R. sanguineus in A. platys infection of dogs.  相似文献

Engorged female Haemaphysalis leachi and Rhipicephalus sanguineus as well as their eggs, flat and engorged larvae and nymphs were incubated at combinations of five temperatures and three relative humidities. Mean pre-oviposition periods for H. leachi varied between 4.3 days and 12.1 days and for R. sanguineus between 4.8 days and 21.0 days. Haemaphysalis leachi converted up to 65.7% of their body mass into eggs and produced up to 16.3 eggs/mg body mass, with 4801 eggs the maximum number deposited by a single female. Peak egg production of 520 eggs/day was recorded 3 days after the commencement of oviposition. Rhipicephalus sanguineus converted up to 68.1% of their body mass into eggs and produced up to 17.2 eggs/mg body mass, with a maximum of 3,232 eggs, and peak egg production of 400 eggs/day 4 days after the commencement of oviposition. Mean incubation periods for eggs of H. leachi varied between 15.5 days and 66.7 days, and for R. sanguineus between 19.0 days and 72.0 days. Mean pre-moult periods for engorged larvae and nymphs of H. leachi varied between 14.0 days and 192.0 days, and 13.0 days and 41.0 days respectively, and for R. sanguineus between 9.5 days and 36.5 days, and 15.0 days and 44.5 days respectively. Allowing 7 days for female engorgement and 7 days for hardening of the exoskeletons and mouthparts of each of the three parasitic stages before they attach to a host, the life cycle of H. leachi would require 97-190 days and that of R. sanguineus 99-236 days to complete at the various regimes of temperature and relative humidity. The greatest proportion of H. leachi larvae engorging on mice detached between 18:00 and 19:00 on the first day of detachment and between 06:00 and 08:00 in the morning and 14:00 and 18:00 in the afternoon of the following day, while the greatest proportion of nymphs engorging on dogs detached around 19:00 on the first day of detachment and between 13:00 and 17:00 on the following day. The greatest proportion of R. sanguineus larvae engorging on dogs detached between 11:00 and 21:00 on the second day of detachment, and the greatest proportion of nymphs detached between 03:00 and 5:00 on the second and third days of detachment.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the acaricidal activity of hydroethanolic formulations of thymol at varying concentrations on Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Dermacentor nitens larvae. The larval packet test was used and the thymol concentrations tested were 2.5, 5.0, 10.0, 15.0 and 20.0 mg/ml. The control group was exposed only to water and ethanol (50/50%) and there were 10 repetitions for each treatment. The mortality was evaluated after 24 h. For the R. sanguineus larvae, the mortality rates were 47.5, 50.2, 96.7, 95.9 and 98.1%, while for D. nitens the rates were 14.1, 75.0, 90.2, 90.3 and 99.5%, at respective thymol concentrations of 2.5, 5.0, 10.0, 15.0 and 20.0 mg/ml. The results indicate that the hydroethanolic formulations of thymol tested have acaricidal activity on R. sanguineus and D. nitens larvae exposed topically, causing mortality greater than 90% 24 h post-treatment starting at the concentration of 10 mg/ml.  相似文献

The life cycles of filarioids of dogs presenting dermal microfilariae have been little studied. Following the recent retrieval of dermal microfilariae identified as Cercopithifilaria sp. in a dog from Sicily (Italy), this study was designed to assess the role of the brown dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus as an intermediate host of this filarial species. An experimental tick infestation was performed on an infected dog using 300 nymphs of R. sanguineus. Engorged nymphs were collected and examined by both microscopic dissection and molecular analysis at five time points (i.e., the same day of tick detachment and 10, 20, 30 and 50 days post-detachment) to detect the presence and developmental stage of filariae in the ticks. A total of 270 engorged nymphs were collected from the dog and developing filarioid larvae detected in 10 (5%) out of 200 ticks dissected. Infective third-stage larvae were observed in 4 (2%) of the all dissected ticks, 30 days post-detachment. Twelve (6.6%) out of 181 samples molecularly tested were positive for Cercopithifilaria sp. This study demonstrates that nymphs of R. sanguineus feeding on a dog naturally infected by Cercopithifilaria sp. can ingest microfilariae, which develop up to the third infective stage thus suggesting that this tick species might act as an intermediate host of this little known canine filarioid.  相似文献

Ticks were collected at monthly intervals for 16 consecutive months from individual dogs by their owners in or close to the town of Stellenbosch, Western Cape Province. They were also collected for 27 consecutive months from dogs presented for a variety of reasons at three veterinary clinics in Stellenbosch, and from dogs upon admission to an animal welfare shelter. At one of the veterinary clinics ticks were also collected from cats. Dog owners collected six ixodid species from their pets and the most numerous of these were Haemaphysalis leachi and Rhipicephalus gertrudae. Twelve ixodid tick species and the argasid tick, Otobius megnini were collected from dogs at veterinary clinics and the animal shelter, and H. leachi, R. gertrudae and Rhipicephalus sanguineus were the most numerous. A total of nine dogs were infested with the Karoo paralysis tick, Ixodes rubicundus. No clear pattern of seasonality was evident for H. leachi, which was present throughout the year. The largest numbers of adult R. gertrudae were generally present from August to October, while adult R. sanguineus were collected during October 2000, February and March 2001, from January to April 2002 and during October 2002. Five ixodid tick species, of which H. leachi was the most numerous and prevalent, were collected from cats.  相似文献
