Modeling studies on sulfur deposition and transport in East Asia   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A three dimensional regional Eulerian model of sulfur deposition and tranport has been developed. It includes emission, transport, diffusion, gas-phase and aqeous-phase chemical process, dry depostion, rainout and washout process. A looking up table method is provided to deal with the gas-phase chemical process including sulfur transfer. Calculated values have reasonable agreement with observations. Distribution of sulfur deposition and transport in East Asia are also analyzed in the paper. Simulation shows that sulfate (SO 4 2– ) is the main substance to transport in long range transport. Some amount of sulfur emission of different countries transport across boundaries, but the main origin of sulfur deposition in each country in East Asia is from herself. Furthermore, some transport paths on different layers and outlet or inlet zones are found.  相似文献

Recognizing the adverse effects of acid deposition and its transboundary nature, efforts have been made for the past six years by countries in the East Asian region to establish acid deposition monitoring network in the region by taking a step-by-step approach towards the formal establishment. The First Intergovernmental Meeting held in March 1998 agreed as the first step to implement preparatory-phase activities for two years with the aim to officially establish the EANET in the year 2000. With the successful implementation of the preparatory-phase activities, the Second Intergovernmental Meeting held in October 2000 subsequently agreed to start the activities of the EANET on a regular basis from January 2001. Thailand developed and carried out the national monitoring plan for the preparatory-phase activities through the cooperation of various agencies. Four monitoring sites were included in the preparatory-phase activities of the EANET. Monitoring capacity in Thailand has been gradually built during the preparatory-phase and Thailand is now ready to start monitoring activities of the EANET on a regular basis. Efforts should be continued to study the complex nature of acid deposition phenomena, to quantify the adverse environmental impacts of acid deposition, and to eventually reduce emissions of acid precursors. Strong supports from international and regional organizations are essential for effective implementation of the EANET activities and to address acid deposition problem in the East Asian region.  相似文献

Simultaneous soil acidification and deposition of heavy metals is a major concern for forest and agricultural soils of the Black Triangle region of East Central Europe including southern former East Germany, northern Bohemia of the Czech Republic, and southern Poland. The objective of this project was to develop historical and future projections of acid and heavy metal deposition to soils (As, Cd, Pb, Zn) and to produce a preliminary map of soil sensitivity to cadmium pollution and uptake by crops. Ultimately, we wish to assess the relative hazard and recovery times of soils to metals deposition in the region. Emission and deposition data bases obtained from several models developed at IIASA were linked using the Geographical Information System ARC/INFO to produce soil maps of sensitivity to cadmium mobility based on metals deposition, soil type, soil texture, organic matter content, and acid deposition. RAINS 6.1 (Alcamo et al., 1990) was utilized to produce maps of acid deposition for EMEP grids (150 km x 150 km). The largest amount of acid load is deposited in southern East Germany. Sulfur deposition in that area was 10–12 gS/m2/yr in 1990, and S+N deposition exceeded 8000 eq/ha/yr. But the hot spot for metals deposition is further to the east, in the Silesia area of southern Poland. The TRACE2 trajectory model of Alcamo, Bartnicki, and Olendrzynski (1992) was used to estimate cumulative metals deposition since 1955 with scenarios to 2010. Pb has improved over Europe since 1970 when depositions in the Ruhr River Valley of West Germany exceeded 60 mg/m2/yr. But cadmium deposition in southern Poland (Katowice and Krakow) has now accumulated to 60–70 mg/m2 by atmospheric deposition alone. During base case simulations from 1955–87, approximately 1.8 mg/kg Pb and 0.12 mg/kg Cd have been added to the mixed plow-layer of 30 cm. If these emissions continue indefinitely, the accumulation of metals will become problematic for agriculture and the food chain.  相似文献

The availability of national maps of critical loads for soils, vegetation and freshwaters helpsenable the assessment of the effects of large point sources of pollution in the UK. The deposition footprint of most major sources has been modelled and combined in a GIS with a national critical loads database. As part of an integrated pollution control strategy (IPC) it may be helpful to rank point sources in order of their effects on the environment. A comparison of the discriminating power and effectiveness of several ranking schemes has been carried out. A variety of ranking schemes were investigated, such as; total area where sulphur deposition exceeds the critical load or average mass deposited on areas where the critical load is exceeded. Their relative merits were compared for several current and future scenarios, such as, actual 1993 emissions or predicted emissions for 2001. Rankings for the unit emissions provided a measure of the pollution potential of each source and were a complex function of the location of sensitive areas and meteorological conditions. Rankings under other scenarios tended to be dominated by the relative magnitude of the emissions. Comparison between the ranking schemes was made using non-parametric statistics. The comparisons reveal complex interactions between different schemes. The approach is providing practical solutions to a pollution control strategy based on maximising environmental benefits.  相似文献

High-elevation red spruce-Fraser fir forests in the Southern Appalachian mountains: 1) receive among the highest rates of atmospheric deposition measured in North America, 2) contain old-growth forests, 3) have shown declines in forest health, 4) have sustained high insect-caused fir mortality, and 5) contain poorly buffered soils and stream systems. High rates of nitrogen and sulphur deposition (1900 and 2200 Eq·ha–1·yr–1, respectively) are dominated by dry and cloud deposition processes. Large leaching fluxes of nitrate-nitrogen (100–1400 Eq·ha–1·yr–1) occur within the soil profile. We have expanded the study to the watershed scale with monitoring of: precipitation, throughfall, stream hydrology, and stream chemistry. Two streamlets drain the 17.4 ha Noland Divide Watershed (1676–1920m) located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. A network of 50 20x20 m plots is being used to assess stand structure, biomass, and soil nutrient pools. Nitrate is the predominant anion in the streamlets (weighted concentrations: 47 and 54 eq·L–1 NO3 ; 31 and 43 eq·L–1 SO4 2–). Watershed nitrate export is extremely high (1000 Eq·ha–1 yr–1), facilitating significant base cation exports. Stream acid neutralizing capacity values are extremely low (–10 to 20 eq·L–1) and episodic acidifications (pH declines of a full unit in days or weeks time) occur. Annual streamwater sulfate export is on the order of 770 Eq·ha–1yr–1 or about one-third of total annual inputs, indicating there is net watershed sulfate retention. The system is highly nitrogen saturated (Stage 2, Stoddard, 1994) and this condition promotes both chronic and episodic stream acidification.  相似文献

Acid clearwater fishless streams have been identified in the Vosges mountains. In order to evaluate the relatipnships between acidifying factors (such as atmospheric deposition), buffering factors (such as bedrock and soil type), and surface water acidity, an exhaustive survey of streamwater acidity in the Vosges mountains (N-E France) was performed. A network of 11 measurement stations of atmospheric deposition was used to estimate and map deposition over the whole massif (total area 5000 km2). Data on bedrock, soil, superficial deposits, and vegetation were collected from published studies. Sensitive areas as well as acidifying environment factors were derived from the corresponding maps. Critical loads of acidity were calculated using the PROFILE model to assess the forest ecosystem sensitivity to acid deposition in the Asian part of Russia — Siberia. The main input parameters and the output were mapped. At present atmospheric inputs of acid forming pollutants to the study territory are mainly related to transregional and transboundary pollution from Europe. It was shown that the most sensitive to acid loading are ecosystems of the Tundra zone and of the East Sayan mountains' coniferous forests with dystric cambisols and gleysoils, critical loads of actual acidity (CL(Ac)) = 0–0.3 keq/ha/yr. The most tolerant ecosystems are ecosystems of deciduous forests with podsoluvisols, luvisols and humic luvisols of South Taiga zone in West Siberia, CL(Ac) = 3.5–7.0 keq/ha/yr. Generally the values of critical loads are increasing from the North to the South and from the East to the West following the bioproductivity, annual soil temperature and alkalinity of deposition increases.  相似文献

Precipitation falling on the Kola North of Russia is severely polluted by strong acids and heavy metals emitted from large local smelters operated by the Severonickel and Pechenganickel companies. Large areas in the affected region are considered sensitive to acid precipitation due to geological and climatological conditions. Extensive surface water acidification has taken place, particularly, in the mountain and remote tundra regions. Critical loads and their cxceedances have been calculated for 370 lakes sampled in the Kola peninsula. These data indicate that the surface waters in the Kola North are highly sensitive to acidic deposition. Using the minimum values determined for each NILU grid cell, critical loads of less than 20 meq/m2yr occur in about 50 percent of the area.  相似文献

The Shenandoah National Park: Fish in Sensitive Habitats (SNP:FISH) project is a response to declining pH and acid neutralizing capacity in Shenandoah National Park (SNP) streams. SNP receives more atmospheric sulfate than any other USA national park, and pH had decreased to the point where early negative effects on fish were expected. SNP provides the opportunity to study the early stages of acidification effects on fish. Three different classes of geological formations yield streams with low-ANC (0 Eq/L), intermediate-ANC (60–100 Eq/L) or high-ANC (150–200 Eq/L) waters in SNP. This allows a comparison of responses across a water quality gradient in a small geographic area receiving similar deposition. Both chronic and episodic acidification occur in SNP streams. Biological effects are apparent in fish species richness, population density, condition factor, age, size, and bioassay survival. A primary project objective was to provide the necessary data for development and testing models for forecasting changes in fish communities resulting from changes in stream chemistry. Monitored variables include several which are predictive of acidification effects on SNP fish communities.  相似文献

The ionic composition of 55 aerosol samples and 31 precipitation events collected in a coastal site in southern Sardinia (Capo Carbonara, 39°06 N; 09°31 E) were compared. The samples were collected during one year period (Oct'90/Oct'91) and showed high variability in composition according to meteorological conditions. Rain and soluble part of aerosol showed a strikingly similar ionic composition: most significant anions were chlorine and sulphate, and sodium is the principal cations, followed by magnesium and calcium. The acid events are associated with N-NW trajectories (anthropogenic influxes from N. Europe) with avg. pH=4.65, non sea salt (nss) Ca=60 eq/l and NO3/nssSO4=0.6. Southern precipitations are influenced by Saharan dust alkaline effects, with avg. pH=6.75,nssCa=271 eq/l and NO3/nssSO4=0.4. Na/Cl ratio in rain is similar to sea water (0.87), whilst in aerosols there is a Cl loss (Na/Cl=1.10), probably due to reaction with nitric acid. Total fluxes of Ca, Mg, NO3 and SO4 were 104, 9, 64 and 113 g/cm2, and wet deposition exceeded (65–90%) dry deposition. Scavenging ratios (SR) as defined by the equation:SR=[(Ci)rain/(Ci)air] *d, (d=1200g/m3) were calculated, using geometric means (Ci) of precipitation and aerosols collected concurrently during the period (a total of 23 samples). The SR values are Ca=3400, Cl=2400, Na, K, SO4=1700, Mg=1000 and NO3=750. These numbers could be useful to infer total fluxes by using simply rainwater ionic composition in Mediterranean semi-arid sites like Sardinia.  相似文献

Rime-ice and snow samples were collected at mountain sites in Kyushu, Japan during the winter of 1994, and both soluble and insoluble substances in the melted rime-ice were analyzed by ion chromatography, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP/MS) and analytical electron microscopy, in order to find the evidences of long-range transport of air pollutants from the cities of the East Asian region. The relationships between Al, which is most often used as an index of soil components, and other elements were examined. The positive correlation was found between Al and three elements (Ti, Mn, Ba). Therefore, behaviors of these elements in rime-ice may be similar to that of soil particles. Furthermore, it was possible to classify the elements into three groups with the relation between a lead isotope ratio and concentration ratio of lead and zinc (Pb/Zn). In addition, numbers of particles were found in the rime-ice. The particles around 1 m in diameter were considered to be the combustion products of coal, whose Pb/Zn were similar to that of previous survey report in Korea. The existent forms of chemical species in rime-ice will become an important factor, when we consider the origin of air pollutants transported over long distances in the East Asian region.  相似文献

This paper presents estimates of the monetary value of the biophysical damages caused by acid deposition for the National Acid Precipitation Assessment Program's 1985 Assessment. Economic damages are estimated for four effect areas: commercial agriculture, forests, recreational fishing and selected types of materials. The preliminary nature of the value of the estimated damages in each area is emphasized. The estimated values should be interpreted with appropriate regard for the uncertainties about the physical effects of acid deposition and the assumptions in the economic analysis.  相似文献

In large regions of Europe and eastern North America atmospheric deposition of inorganic nitrogen (N) compounds has greatly increased the natural external supply to forest ecosystems. This leads to N saturation, in which availability of inorganic N is in excess of biological demand and the ecosystem is unable to retain all incoming N. The large-scale experiments of the NITREX project (NITRogen saturation EXperiments) are designed to provide information regarding the patterns and rates of responses of coniferous forest ecosystems to increases in N deposition and the reversibility and recovery of impacted ecosystems following reductions in N deposition.The timing of ecosystem response generally followed a hypothesized cascade of response. In all sites N outputs have responded markedly but to very different degrees within the first three years of treatment. Within this time significant effects on soil processes and on vegetation have only been detected at two sites. This delayed response is explained by the large capacity of the soil system to buffer the increased N supply by microbial immobilization and adsorption. We believe that this concept provides a framework for the evaluation and prediction of the ecosystem response to environmental change.  相似文献

Different authors in India and South East Asia treat dioecious species in the genus Momordica differently. The cultivated ‘bhat karela’ of East and North East India is referred to as Momordica dioica Roxb. by botanists and herbarium curators whereas agricultural scientists, in general, designate it as Momordica cochinchinensis Spreng. A critical study of 266 herbarium sheets housed at CAL and BSISH and in situ field studies at specific pockets in the North East India followed by preliminary characterization revealed its correct identity as Momordica subangulata Blume subsp. renigera (G. Don) de Wilde. First hand information on its occurrence, taxonomy and distribution in India is given. The species was found in wild as well as in homestead cultivation in North Eastern India and exemplify direct utilization of biodiversity by indigenous people.

Ninety potted red spruce saplings have been enclosed in open-top fumigation chambers and exposed to simulated acid rain treatments of pH 3.1, 4.1, and 5.1 for two growing seasons as part of a 4 yr study. Original spodosol soil profiles were reconstructed in each 1 m diameter pot with tension lysimeters buried at two depths and drainage spouts installed on the bottom of each pot. All principal fluxes of the major elements are being measured in these ecosystems allowing calculation of precise input-output and internal nutrient budgets. During the first year of treatments, nutrient budgets were strongly affected by enhanced mineralization owing to transplant disturbances, and this masked any treatment effects. Second year budgets indicated the effects of strong acid loading on cation depletion and acidification of soils. For example, nitrate leaching from the subsoil was nearly five times higher in the pH 3.1 treatment than in others and correlated increases in base cation leaching were observed. Significant differences in soil pH among rainfall treatments were also observed. Budgetary calculations demonstrated that at present there are large exchangeable Ca pools available for tree growth, whereas for K, plant requirements were very high relative to K soil pools which may lead to growth deficiencies and/or nutrient imbalances. These results illustrate the potential for the combined effects of tree growth and strong acid loading to deplete the base status of acidic forest soils.  相似文献

Chemical time trends for precipitation, throughfall, and soilwater (1986–1992), and groundwater (1980–1993) at Birkenes, southern Norway, are compared to gain insights into possible causes for the recent increase in groundwater acidification there. Precipitation and throughfall trends do not show evidence for an increase in anthropogenic acids (e.g. sulphate), but seasalt deposition (e.g. chloride) has been marginally greater in 1990–1992 than in most previous years on record. Soilwater composition partly indicates increasing acidification in recent years (pH, Al and ANC), but hardness and sulphate content are decreasing. Soilwater ANC became negative in 1989, revealing a lasting deficit in its potential to buffer acidity. Groundwater shows clear signs of intensifying acidification (pH, Al, ANC, hardness and sulphate), and this may result partly from climatic conditions (mild winters, seasalt episodes) and partly from the deterioration of an acid buffering system within the soil cover. Acidification via sulphate deposition certainly is not a direct cause. The declining hardness of soilwater suggests that the ion-exchange buffer in the soil may have ceased to function properly. The necessity for obtaining long-term time-series of water chemistry is underscored by this study.  相似文献

Estimating the atmospheric input of ions to a watershed has traditionally been accomplished through either the extrapolation of point measurements of deposition or the integration of model estimated deposition. This paper examines the characteristics of precipitation chemistry on the eastern seaboard of the United States where precipitation quality could conceivably affect fish habitats in estuaries. The measured values presented here have been extracted from the data base of the Utility Acid Precipitation Sampling Program (UAPSP) precipitation chemistry network. These data illustrate the nature of ionic deposition at four points on the eastern seabord. The deposition of H' (acidity) is shown to be dependent upon the amount of sulfate and, to a lesser degree, nitrate in the precipitation. It is also shown that the quantity of ionic deposition on a storm-by-storm basis was influenced by the amount of water deposition but the relationship was not very strong. Thus the use of water deposition as a surrogate for ionic deposition is not justified in these watersheds. Finally, it is shown that the deposition of H+, SO4 2?, NO3 ?, and NH4 + were not clearly seasonal. While a large percentage of total ionic deposition occurred in a small number of precipitation events, these exceptional events were not confined to a particular season.  相似文献

In contrast to Europe and North America, air pollution in Asia is increasing rapidly, resulting in both local air quality problems and higher acidic depositions. In 1989, an east-west group of scientists initiated a multi-institutional research project on Acid Rain and Emissions Reduction in Asia, funded for the past two years by the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank. Phase I, covering 23 countries of Asia, focussed on the development of PC-based software called the Regional Air Pollution INformation and Simulation Model (RAINS-ASIA). A 94-region Regional Energy Scenario Generator was developed to create alternative energy/emission scenarios through the year 2020. A long-range atmospheric transport model was developed to calculate dispersion and deposition of sulfur, based upon emissions from area and large point sources, on a one-degree grid of Asia. The resulting impacts of acidic deposition on a variety of vegetation types were analyzed using the critical loads approach to test different emissions management strategies, including both energy conservation measures and sulfur abatement technologies.  相似文献

Episodic acidification-the short-term loss of acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) in surface waters during periods associated with rainfall and snowmelt runoff-has been shown in previous field studies to be a ubiquitous process that can have long-term adverse effects on fish populations. A systematic field study of episodic acidification in five gaged Shenandoah National Park (SNP) streams was initiated in 1991, while a long-term study of changes in acid-base chemistry in four gaged SNP streams has been in operation since 1979. Statistical analysis of the long-term record of mean daily discharge and weekly streamwater chemical composition was performed to identify the dominant processes that control episodic acidification of SNP streams; an objective hydrological separation technique was used to determine whether each weekly sample was taken during antecedent baseflow or stormflow conditions. Using this technique, more than 100 stormflow/baseflow pairs were identified in the long-term (1980–1992) record for White Oak Run from which episodic chemical changes were estimated. Statistical analysis of the resultant data suggested that mean episodic depressions in ANC have increased by nearly a factor of two in White Oak Run since the first outbreak of forest defoliation by the gypsy moth caterpillar during the summer of 1990.  相似文献

Eolian deposits of loess on the Chinese Loess Plateau are investigated to decipher the influence of sequentially changed monsoon climate on silicate weathering process. Detailed hydrochloric acid dissolution experiments are applied to establish a sensitive proxy for silicate weathering. Combined elemental and mineralogical studies show that the minerals which are susceptible to incipient chemical weathering can be totally dissolved in hot hydrochloric acid (80°C, 3mol/L) after 4h, while other stable minerals are nearly unaffected. Thus, the hydrochloric acid dissolvable fractions (ADF) of loess and paleosol are more sensitive than bulk samples in the weathering reaction. Since Mg is tend to be leached out from the ADF while Al is conserved during the incongruent weathering, Mg/Al ratio of the ADF (Mg/AlADF) could indicate the weathering intensities of the Mg-bearing minerals, mainly chlorite. The Mg/AlADF of the modern soils on the Chinese Loess Plateau is closely correlated to the local precipitation amounts, suggests that the intensity of summer monsoon is a key factor in the weathering of Mg-silicate. The silicate weathering intensity of the loess-paleosol deposits of past 130Kyrs shows strong procession cycle of 23Kyrs coupled by glacial-interglacial variation. The 23Krys cycles are coherent to the variations of the intensity of summer monsoon, while the 100Kyrs glacial-interglacial variation may relates to the changes in winter monsoon. Phased intensification of East Asian summer monsoon, and thus enhanced silicate weathering and atmosphere CO2 drawdown, in response to the uplift of Tibetan Plateau, may be another mechanism relating the late Cenozoic tectonics to global cooling.  相似文献
