Sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) stocks on the West Coast of Scotland and Ireland have decreased due to reduced survival during the marine phase of their life cycle. Lice‐infested sea trout returning to rivers could indicate that parasite burdens are contributing to the decline. Salmon farms represent a potential source of substantial quantities of sea lice, leading to a conjectured link between parasites on salmon fish farms and infestations on wild sea trout. To investigate the potential infective pressure on sea trout in Loch Shieldaig, offshore and sub‐littoral plankton samples were collected and analysed for sea lice nauplius and copepodid stages. During the plankton survey, numbers of sea lice on a fish farm in the loch reached a maximum in November 2001. Soon after, numbers of sea lice larvae peaked in open‐water samples and then in sub‐littoral samples. Nauplii were found adjacent to the farm and occurred less elsewhere. This study reports a concentration of sea lice larvae at the head of Loch Shieldaig and indicates a possible relationship between sea lice numbers on the fish farm and lice larvae densities in the open‐water of the loch and in the sub‐littoral zone.  相似文献

Hatchery‐reared 1‐year‐old Atlantic salmon post‐smolts (Salmo salar L.), artificially infected with salmon lice [Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer)] copepodids, were found to suffer from primary alterations (increased cortisol levels) at early lice stages. Secondary alterations, such as osmotic stress (increased chloride levels), first occurred after the preadult stages of the lice appeared. Fish with the highest salmon lice infections died throughout the experiment. Seven years of field investigation of Trondheimsfjorden showed that Atlantic salmon post‐smolts descending coastal waters can become heavily infected with salmon lice. The migrating post‐smolts were only infected with the chalimus stages, showing that the fish had only recently left the rivers. The infection level, however, varied considerably between the years, and, in 1998, the infection was higher than previous years. The experimental results have been combined with the field data to appraise the consequences of the infection.  相似文献

Salmon farming began in British Columbia (BC) in the 1970s and in 2006, aquaculture represented BC's largest agricultural export. Along with this growth in production has been a growth in controversy, including the concern that sea lice originating from Atlantic salmon farms negatively impact wild juvenile pink salmon in the Broughton Archipelago. To understand the dynamic interaction between wild and farmed fish, data for on‐farm abundance of sea lice are required. In this study, 33 000 Atlantic salmon from 20 active farms were examined over 3 years. Two species of lice were found: Lepeophtheirus salmonis and Caligus clemensi. Inter‐annual and seasonal variations in abundance levels occurred with lower levels of L. salmonis in 2003 compared with 2004 and 2005, while C. clemensi levels were highest in 2003. The abundance of L. salmonis was greater on older farmed fish. The findings are compared with European and eastern Canadian sea lice reports, and possible sources of sea lice on farmed salmon are discussed.  相似文献

The efficacy of teflubenzuron (Calicide®) for the treatment of farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) infested with sea lice [Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer)] was investigated on two commercial salmon farms. Teflubenzuron (Calicide®) coated onto commercial feed pellets was administered orally at 10 mg per kg body weight per day for seven consecutive days. Fish were randomly sampled and lice numbers recorded from both treated and control groups on four sampling occasions post‐medication. Statistically significant reductions in the number of L. salmonis per fish were recorded. Maximum efficacy was observed toward chalimus and preadult stages of L. salmonis, and was achieved about 7 days post‐medication. No apparent effect was observed on adult lice. No adverse drug reactions or palatability problems were associated with the treatments.  相似文献

The sea louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer 1837), is a significant parasite of farmed salmon throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Management of on‐farm louse populations can be improved by understanding the role that wild fish play in sustaining and providing refuge for the local population of sea lice. In this study, 1,064 sticklebacks were captured. Of these animals, 176 individuals were carrying a total of 238 sea lice, yielding a prevalence and intensity of 16.5% and 1.4 lice per fish, respectively. Detailed examination of the sea lice on the three‐spined sticklebacks captured in Cobscook Bay found two L. salmonis individuals using three‐spined sticklebacks as hosts. A 2012 survey of wild fish in Cobscook Bay, Maine, found multiple wild hosts for Caligus elongatus (von Nordmann 1832), including three‐spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus L.), but no L. salmonis were found in this earlier study.  相似文献

The aims of the present study were to describe the salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis Krøyer, 1837) situation in an intensive salmon production area in mid‐Norway and to consider implications of changing practices of how salmon lice infestation can be controlled. The results in this study suggest that there are steps that can be carried out to keep salmon lice under control even during years when the temperature facilitates a quick salmon lice development. The present work indicates that the use of cleaner fish can delay the time it takes adult female lice to reach 0.1 per salmon in the beginning of a production cycle. It suggests that the timing of cleaner fish deployment into salmon cages can influence its effectiveness in controlling salmon lice. It also gives caution to letting salmon lice develop unchecked, even at levels far below the current lice limit, because of the difficulties to control salmon lice when the external infection pressure is too high. This study took place during a rapid change in delousing methods, in an area with coordinated salmon production. Despite its exploratory nature, this study offers insights into the salmon lice fluctuations in relation to efforts aimed at controlling it.  相似文献

This study examines the relative density of sea lice, Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer), larvae in the inter‐tidal areas of Loch Torridon, a fjordic sea loch in Western Scotland and the site of several commercial salmon farms. Samples of planktonic sea lice were collected in each spring from 1999 to 2003 near the mouth of the River Shieldaig, where sea trout have been shown to congregate in the first few days after going to sea, and from 2001 to 2003 near the mouth of the River Balgy. No larval sea lice were found near the mouth of the River Shieldaig in spring 2000 or 2002, when gravid female sea lice were absent on local fish farms. The same finding was observed in 2002 at the mouth of the River Balgy. In springs of 1999, 2001 and 2003, peak densities of larval sea lice of 33, 94 and 143 m?3, respectively, were observed at the mouth of the river Shieldaig. At the mouth of the River Balgy, peak densities of 74 and 78 lice m?3 were observed in 2001 and 2003 respectively. At the time these samples were collected, the two local salmon farms were in the second year of their production cycle and gravid female sea lice were present. Samples of larval sea lice were also obtained year round, at approximately weekly intervals, from a 50‐m transect at the mouth of the River Shieldaig, from March 2001 to June 2003, and compared with frequencies of gravid female sea lice on the two local salmon farms. High levels were found in the winter. No planktonic sea lice were found in this transect when gravid females were not present on the local fish farms.  相似文献

Our objective was to detect single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with resistance to the salmon louse in the Saint John River aquacultural population of North American Atlantic salmon using estimated breeding values (EBVs) and 6K genotypes from the parent‐generation and lice count phenotypes from the challenged, but ungenotyped, offspring‐generation. In 2011 and 2012, we challenged recent smolts with approximately 100 copepodids each. Fish were euthanized once the lice reached the chalimus stages and lice count, sex, tank and salt water weight were recorded. We used a multiple trait model to estimate breeding values for the parent‐generation using their own fresh water weights and the salt water weights and lice counts of the offspring‐generation. Salmon lice count heritability for untransformed and transformed data was 0.17 and 0.29 respectively. Two different genome‐wide association study methods were compared: (i) forward multiple linear regression and (ii) a mixed linear model using principal components to correct for population stratification as implemented in the egscore function of GenABEL. The two methods detected different SNPs located on different chromosomes. The multiple regression method incorporated 70 SNPs found on chromosomes 2, 7, 9, 12, 14, 15, 21, 22, 1p/23, 24. Many SNPs entered into the forward multiple regression are likely to be false positives from not correcting for the observed population stratification and cryptic relatedness. In contrast, the mixed linear model identified only two SNPs, one on chromosome 1p/23 (6.9%) and one on chromosome 1q (6.1%) consistent with louse‐resistance being a quantitative trait.  相似文献

The salmon louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis Krøyer, is the major obstacle facing a sustainable future for farmers of salmonids in the North Atlantic Ocean. Medicinal compounds have been the most utilized tool to prevent salmon lice infestation; however, the active compounds have become less effective or considered environmentally unfriendly in the past years. Novel medicinal compounds are thus highly desired. In two experiment series, 26 medicinal compounds were screened for their efficacy against salmon lice, in a 30‐min exposure and 24‐h exposure, respectively. Pyriprole, imidacloprid, cartap and spinetoram were effective at 50 mg L?1 in the short‐time exposure. In the 24‐h exposure, pyriprole, propoxur, cartap, imidacloprid, fenoxycarb, pyriproxyfen, nitenpyram, spinetoram, spiromesifen and diflubenzuron induced a high level of immobilization at 5 mg L?1. The EC50 values of the effective compounds were calculated in further titration studies for both exposure periods. Several physiological and biochemical pathways were discovered as possible targets for medicinal intervention against the salmon louse.  相似文献

Aggregation is common amongst parasites, where a small number of hosts carry a large proportion of parasites. This could result in density‐dependent effects on parasite fitness. In a laboratory study, we explored whether parasite load affected parasite fecundity and survival, using ectoparasitic salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis Krøyer, 1837) infecting Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) hosts. We found a significant reduction in fecundity with higher parasite load, but no significant effect on survival. Together with previous findings, this suggests that stronger competition amongst female lice under high parasite load is a more likely explanation than increased host immune response.  相似文献

The relationship between aquaculture and infestations of sea lice on sea trout, Salmo trutta L., is controversial. Here, the association between sea lice infestations on wild sea trout and characteristics of local Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., farms were investigated using data collected on the Scottish west coast. The proportion of sea trout with louse burdens above a critical level was positively related to the fork length of the sea trout and the mean weight of salmon on the nearest fish farm, and negatively related to the distance to that farm. The distance to the nearest fish farm did not influence the probability of infestations above the critical level beyond 31 km although there was considerable uncertainty around this cut‐off distance (95% limits: 13–149 km). The results support a link between Atlantic salmon farms and sea lice burdens on sea trout in the west of Scotland and provide the type of information required for marine spatial planning.  相似文献

Aggregation is commonly observed for macroparasites, but its adaptive value remains unclear. Heavy infestations intensities may lead to a decrease in some fitness‐related traits of parasites (e.g. parasite fecundity or survival). However, to a dioecious parasite, increased aggregation could also increase the chance of finding individuals of the opposite sex. In a laboratory experiment, we tested if previous experience with salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) affected susceptibility of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) to later exposure to the same parasite species. We found that currently infected fish got higher intensities of new lice than naive fish. This suggests that hosts already carrying parasites are more susceptible to new lice infections. For this dioecious parasite, such positive density dependence might be adaptive, ensuring successful reproduction under conditions of low lice densities by increasing the probability of both sexes infecting the same host.  相似文献

Sea lice data collected from Atlantic salmon farms in the Broughton Archipelago between 2003 and 2005 were examined for inter-regional differences in mobile Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer) abundance using the generalized linear model procedure. Factors such as age of the salmon populations, location of farms and time of year had a significant effect on the abundance of the mobile stages of L. salmonis whereas water temperature and salinity did not. Separate evaluation of SLICE® treatment data found no significant difference in treatment frequency among the areas but did show that there were significantly lower numbers of farm treatments during the summer months when compared with other seasons. The role of environment and wild fish in influencing sea lice abundance on the farmed salmon is discussed. The findings suggest that effective management programmes for sea lice should not only be based on geographical location but should take into account other factors which could influence lice abundance levels.  相似文献

Infections of sea lice [Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer)] were studied over winter on a working, commercial salmon farm in relation to two types of feeding system: a regular, pneumatic spray feeder and an irregular, ‘demand feed’ sensor system (AquasmartTM). Contrary to prediction, the AquasmartTM system alone had no significant effect on chalimus infestation compared with fish fed by pneumatic spray. However, it was associated with significantly reduced numbers of mobile stages, both at the beginning of the study (P < 0.05) and, more particularly, in conjunction with treatment of all pens using hydrogen peroxide (P < 0.001). It is suggested that feeding regime may represent a useful tool in reducing lice infestation when co‐ordinated with other methods of control, such as peroxide treatment, and that further work in this field is merited.  相似文献

The survival of salmon lice. Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer) on Arctic charr. Salvelinus alpinus (L.). in fresh water was studied. The results showed that salmon lice were able to survive for up to 3 weeks, in contrast with previous published information that the parasite is quickly shed when the fish enters fresh water.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine the effects of a co-infection with Moritella viscosa at different exposure levels of sea lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). M. viscosa (1.14 × 106 cfu/ml) was introduced to all experimental tanks at 10 days post-lice infection (dpLs). Mean lice counts decreased over time in both the medium lice co-infection (31.5 ± 19.0 at 7 dpLs; 16.9 ± 9.3 at 46 dpLs) and high lice co-infection (62.0 ± 10.8 at 7 dpLs; 37.6 ± 11.3 at 46 dpLs). There were significantly higher mortalities and more severe skin lesions in the high lice co-infected group compared to medium lice co-infected group or M. viscosa-only infection. Quantitative gene expression analysis detected a significant upregulation of genes in skin from the high lice co-infection group consistent with severe inflammation (il-8, mmp-9, hep, saa). Skin lesions retrieved throughout the study were positive for M. viscosa growth, but these were rarely located in regions associated with lice. These results suggest that while M. viscosa infection itself may induce skin lesion development in salmon, co-infection with high numbers of lice can enhance this impact and significantly reduce the ability of these lesions to resolve, resulting in increased mortality.  相似文献

Salmon louse, or sea lice, (Lepoptherius salmonis) represents practical, economical and fish welfare challenges for salmon farming (Hamre et al., 2013) and for the free-living stocks of salmon. There is an urgent need in the industry for a system that provides reliable numbers of louse on farmed salmon. Underwater hyperspectral imaging represents a potential new technique for louse counting in sea cages. In laboratory studies, the UHI technology could detect and classify pre-adults (pre-adult I and II), adult males and adult females (ovigerous) of sea lice based on the difference in their spectral characteristics. A model was built for detection of lice on the salmon and the UHI had a detection success ranging from 67 to 100 % with an average of 82%. A classification of the detected lice was performed for pre-adults, adult males and ovigerous lice and had a prediction accuracy of 85% when lice were divided into three groups (pre-adults, adult male and ovigerous lice) and 93% when lice were divided in two groups, ovigerous lice and all the other mobile lice (pre-adults and adult male). An automatic procedure for in situ measurements of louse infected salmon could deliver a data basis several times higher than the traditional counting system. The next generation of UHI louse detector should be developed with a higher spatial resolution to be able to detect also the sessile stages of lice. For succeeding with in situ classification of L. salmonis, correction algorithms to compensate for the impact of water between the UHI and lice need also to be developed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Sea lice, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, mobile stages were caught using a light trap, in cages holding Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, and their abundance determined through calculation. Seasonal changes were shown with an increase in abundance as the temperature increased toward the end of the season. Analysis of manual lice-count data indicated variations in lice abundance between cages with and without deployed light traps. Analysis indicated that these variations were in larval presence (P = 0.006) and presence of gravid females (P = 0.015), but not in abundance of in pre-adults (P = 0.172). Cage net condition also affected the abundance and infection intensity of sea lice on Atlantic salmon within aquaculture cages. Abundance of larvae were affected by net condition (P = 0.01), as were abundance of pre-adults on salmon (P = 0.04). The infection intensity of gravid females, however, did not vary with net condition (P = 0.74). Other species of zooplankton such as, American lobster, Homarus americanus, larvae and various Brachi-pod larvae, were also collected with the light trap. The light trap, as presented in this research, could provide an alternate method of lice control in aquaculture cages.  相似文献

Health diets for Atlantic salmon have become an important component of the integrated pest management strategies targeting sea lice. A challenge trial was performed to examine the effect of supplementing salmon diets with either immunostimulants or essential oils. One control and four experimental diets containing immunostimulants or natural identical extracts were fed to Atlantic salmon in triplicate tanks for 4 weeks before challenging the fish with the sea lice copepodids. Prevalence of infection was 100%, and the mean abundance of infection was 21.2. The lowest mean lice count of 17 per fish (P < 0.05) was found in the group fed a mix of natural identical plant extracts (PX I). This represents a 20% reduction in infection, showing the potential for health diets to be employed as a tool to help control sea lice. To gain an understanding of the mechanisms of action underlying this protection, fish fed the control diet and fish fed the PX I diet were compared using quantitative histology of the epidermis and proteomic analysis of epidermal mucus. No significant differences were seen in the thickness of the epidermis or mucous cell percentage area, but differences in expression were seen for a number of proteins, including heat shock proteins, in epidermal mucus.  相似文献
