The residues of antimicrobial substances, some chlorinated and organophosphate pesticides and chemical elements were studied in the meat and organs of a group of bulls fed food-waste paste for 240 days and a group of bulls fed the same paste with an addition of poultry waste. These residues were also studied in the tissues of pigs fed the food-waste paste for 135 and 151 days until slaughter. The feed ingredients were also examined during the feeding trials. Although some of the residues under study were found in the tissues of the test animals at increased amounts, their concentrations were diluted in the tissues in the majority of cases when the feed pastes were administered. All residue contents recorded in the tissues remained below the permissible limits as given in valid instructions and directives so that the products, i. e. meat and organs, could be deemed digestible on the basis of hygienic evaluation. Hence, from the point of view of the occurrence of residues of foreign substances in edible tissues, the administration of food-waste pastes to farm animals can be considered as admissible.  相似文献

The presence of residues of some chemical foreign substances in the tissues of cow and bull genitals and in sire sperm was investigated due to frequently occurring reproductive disorders in some large cow herds, mainly with the large-scale rearing system. Negative effects of these substances on the reproductive process of cows and bulls were supposed to be exerted. In keeping with the opinions and data mentioned by some authors in the literature there is a fact that the sperm and tissues of genitals belong to those biological materials which are the first to respond to the toxic effects of different chemicals by disorders of their physiological functions. These disorders, mainly in sperm cells, can be evaluated objectively from the recorded changes in physical and biological characteristics. The chemicals under investigation were residues of hexachlorobenzene (HCB), alpha, beta, gamma hexachlorocyclohexane isomers, sigma DDT and its metabolites and of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB). The concentrations of the residues of these substances in the examined biological materials were very low, in some cases they were not detected at all. It is therefore supposed that these residues could not exert and significant effects on the physiological functions of examined cows and bulls with respect to their reproductive organs. These examinations should become more extensive and thorough, mainly in the herds and regions exposed to potential contamination; the residues of foreign substances should be investigated in view of ecological conditions. One hundred forty-four Angus male calves were assigned to one of five slaughter-age groups: 9, 12, 15, 18 and 24 mo of age. After weaning, one-half of the calves within slaughter age were castrated. One-half of the 12-, 15-, 18- and 24-mo age groups of each sex were further randomly allotted to a high-energy (HE) or low-energy (LE) finishing diet. Eight bulls and eight steers assigned to the 9-mo slaughter group were fed the HE diet only. Samples from the longissimus muscle (LM) were taken at the 12th rib for histological evaluations of fat deposits. Thin sections from the LM at the 11th rib were stained for lipid, collagen and elastin. Steaks from the LM were cooked and evaluated by a sensory panel and sheared by a Warner-Bratzler shear (WBS) device. The 9-10-11th rib sections were separated into muscle, fat and bone. Collagen, elastin and collagen solubility were determined chemically. Bulls had heavier carcasses, less fat and lower sensory scores for tenderness and juiciness than steers. Steers fed the HE diet had lower WBS values than bulls on either diet. Cooking losses were higher for bulls at 12, 18 and 24 mo than for steers. Histological evaluation showed that collagen content was higher for bulls than for steers and higher for cattle fed the LE diet than those fed the HE diet. Among cattle on the HE diet, the 9-mo cattle had more collagen than all older groups. Neither sex nor diet had an effect on elastin content shown by histological evaluation, but 12-mo cattle had the most elastin and the 15- and 18-mo cattle had the least elastin. Collagen content determined by chemical analysis was not affected by sex, diet or slaughter age. Correlation coefficients among histologically and chemically evaluated collagen and elastin and meat traits were too low to be of practical importance. The time-intensive histological techniques used in our study provided little additional information over that obtained from visually evaluated or chemically measured meat traits.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary CP level on rate, efficiency and composition of gain of growing beef bulls. In Exp. 1, 59 bulls (333 +/- 15.8 kg) were used. Eleven bulls were slaughtered on d 0 to provide an estimate of initial carcass composition (9-10-11 rib section chemical analyses), and remaining bulls were assigned to treatment diets containing 10, 12 or 14% dietary CP. Bulls fed the 10% CP diet grew slower (P less than .05) than bulls fed the 12 or 14% CP diets, although dry matter intake and feed-to-gain ratio did not differ. Bulls fed the 12% CP diet had fatter carcasses (P less than .05) than bulls fed the 10 or 14% CP diets and had greater daily fat accretion than bulls fed the 10% CP diet. In Exp. 2, 60 bulls (318 +/- 9.0 kg) were used. Bulls were assigned to initial slaughter (n = 6) or to one of three dietary treatments, 10, 12 or 14% CP, and were slaughtered after feeding for 66, 136 or 202 d (n = 6 . treatment -1 . slaughter time -1). Bulls fed 10% CP diets had lower (P less than .05) rates of carcass protein accretion during d 0 to 136 and d 0 to 202. Multiple fecal samples were collected from growing Angus bulls (264 to 419 kg of BW, 3.0 to 11.4 kg/d of DMI) to predict DMI of a corn-silage-based diet. Contemporaneous digestion trials were conducted with the same diet in 12 steers in yr 1 to 3 and bulls in yr 4. Near-infrared spectra from fecal samples (n = 730 from 282 growing bulls, n = 240 from 36 steers and 12 bulls for digestion trials) were obtained from dried and ground fecal samples, and modified partial least squares regression was used to develop equations to predict DMI and DM digestibility (DMD). Although mean predicted DMI of the growing bulls (7.52 ± 0.04 kg/d or 22.4 ± 0.1 g/kg of BW) was within 2% of mean measured DMI (7.63 ± 0.06 kg/d or 22.7 ± 0.1 g/kg of BW), the mean of paired differences within samples (0.11 ± 0.04 kg/d or 0.3 ± 0.1 g/kg of BW) was greater (P < 0.01) than zero. Measured DMD (72.3 ± 0.5%) was identical (P < 0.97) to predicted DMD (72.3 ± 0.5%), and DMD for bulls in the digestion trial did not differ (P < 0.27) from DMD for steers. Prediction of intake requires incorporation of some measured values from the set of fecal samples to be predicted. Lack of similarity between spectra of fecal grab samples from the growing bulls and daily fecal collection of steers and bulls in the digestion trials in this study indicates the need for further verification before prediction of DMD with fecal grab samples.  相似文献

试验通过研究饲粮不同物理有效中性洗涤纤维(peNDF)含量对育肥奶公牛反刍、消化、生产性能和瘤胃发酵的影响,旨在为奶公牛生产中配制适宜peNDF含量的全混合日粮(TMR)提供依据。选择30头11月龄、体重(345.57±23.53) kg、健康的中国荷斯坦奶公牛(未阉割),随机分为试验Ⅰ、Ⅱ和Ⅲ组,每组10头,分别饲喂8.00 mm孔径筛上物peNDF (peNDF8.00)含量为12.40%、13.75%和14.85%的3种饲粮。结果表明:试验Ⅰ组奶公牛的饲粮采食次数显著高于Ⅱ和Ⅲ组(P<0.05),试验Ⅱ和Ⅲ组反刍时间、每千克干物质和中性洗涤纤维反刍时间显著高于试验Ⅰ组(P<0.05)。3组间干物质采食量(DMI)、peNDF采食量、平均日增重(ADG)、料重比(F/G)及干物质(DM)、粗蛋白质(CP)、中性洗涤纤维(NDF)、酸性洗涤纤维(ADF)、钙(Ca)和磷(P)表观消化率差异均不显著(P>0.05)。试验Ⅲ组瘤胃pH显著高于Ⅰ和Ⅱ组(P<0.05),而丙酸浓度显著低于其他2组(P<0.05)。试验Ⅱ和Ⅲ组瘤胃乙丙比、乙酸和氨态氮(NH3-N)浓度显著高于试验Ⅰ组(P<0.05)。在本试验条件下,3种不同peNDF8.00水平饲粮对育肥奶公牛生产性能和养分表观消化率影响不显著,饲粮peNDF8.00为13.75%和14.85%时,奶公牛反刍时间、瘤胃乙丙比、乙酸和NH3-N浓度显著增加,可使奶公牛保持较佳瘤胃发酵性能。  相似文献

Influence of sire, dietary regimen and slaughter weight on wither height, body depth, heart girth, hip width and percentage of total muscle in each of nine commercial cuts of F1 Holstein X Friesian bulls (N = 260) was studied. Sires were full-blooded or percentage Holstein; dams were commercial and purebred Danish Friesians. The young bulls received 100, 75, 50 or 25% concentrates, with the remainder of the diet provided in the form of silage. Animals were serial-slaughtered at 340, 470 or 600 kg. Sire was a significant source of variation in many of the body measurements and muscle distributional variables that were evaluated. It was noted, however, that sire differences in percentage of total dissected muscle in Group III cuts (rib + loin + round + hindshank) of intact male progeny were of the order of 1% or less. Sire X diet and sire X slaughter weight interactions were statistically significant in some analyses. Muscular development in the neck region was more pronounced when bulls were fed a low-concentrate diet, rather than high levels of concentrates. Percentages of total muscle in the forequarter were highest (P less than .01) for the 470- and 600-kg bulls. Thus feeding bulls to heavier weights had an adverse effect (P less than .01) on percentage of total muscle in Group III cuts. Dietary influence on linear body measurements and muscle distribution in young, Holstein-cross bulls was negligible.  相似文献

Bull calves (n = 143) were obtained from two strains of Angus and two strains of Hereford cattle for which replacements were selected on the basis of superior feedlot growth performance on either high- or medium-energy diets. From weaning to slaughter at 15 mo of age, bulls were fed either the high-energy (80% grain + 20% forage) or medium-energy diet (100% forage) corresponding to their strain. Bulls in high-energy diet groups had a greater (P less than .05) scrotal circumference at 12 mo, but not 15 mo of age, than bulls in medium-energy diet groups. Compared with Hereford bulls, Angus had greater (P less than .01) scrotal circumference (36.1 vs 33.9 cm) and greater (P less than .05) paired testes weight (570 vs 464 g) at 15 mo of age. Daily sperm production per gram testicular parenchyma (DSP/g) was affected by strain-diet (P less than .01) but not by breed. Bulls in medium-energy diet groups had 12% greater DSP/g than did high-energy diet bulls (17.4 X 10(6) vs 15.5 X 10(6)). Daily sperm production (DSP) was 9% and 30% greater (P less than .01) for medium-energy diet bulls in 1980 (8.2 X 10(9) vs 7.5 X 10(9)) and 1981 (8.0 X 10(9) vs 6.2 X 10(9)), respectively, compared with high-energy diet bulls. A comparative slaughter trial was conducted with 36 F1 Nellore x Red Angus calves (12 steers, 12 bulls, and 12 heifers), averaging 274 kg of BW, to assess the net requirements of protein and energy for growth and maintenance. Three cattle from each group (i.e., steers, bulls, and heifers) were slaughtered at the beginning of the trial to determine the initial body composition. The remaining calves were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatments: maintenance (diet containing 70% of DM as corn silage fed at 1.2% of BW daily) or concentrate at 0.75 or 1.5% of BW daily with corn silage available for ad libitum consumption. The diets were isonitrogenous (2% N, DM basis). The experimental design provided ranges in ME intake, BW, and ADG for the development of regression equations to predict the maintenance requirements for NE and net protein (MRNE and MRNP, respectively) and the growth requirement for NE and net protein (GRNE and GRNP, respectively). After 84 d of growth, the cattle were slaughtered. The cleaned gastrointestinal tracts, organs, carcasses, heads, hides, tails, feet, blood, and tissues were weighed to measure empty BW (EBW). These parts were ground separately and subsampled for chemical analyses. For each animal within a period, DMI was measured daily and samples of feces were collected to determine diet digestibility. There were no differences in MRNE (P = 0.06) among groups. The combined data indicated a MRNE of 71.2 kcal x kg(-0.75) of EBW x d(-1), with a partial efficiency of use of ME to NE(m) of 0.71. The partial efficiency of use of ME to NE for growth was 0.54 for bulls, 0.47 for steers, and 0.54 for heifers. The GRNE for steers and heifers were similar (P = 0.15) but were 18.7% greater (P = 0.03) for steers and heifers than for bulls. The MRNP did not differ among groups and averaged 2.53 g of CP x kg(-0.75) of EBW x d(-1). Likewise, GRNP was not different among groups. The percentage of retained energy deposited as protein (RE(p)) increased as the content of retained energy in the gain (RE(c), Mcal/kg of empty body gain) decreased. The RE(p) equation of the pooled data was 46.5 x e(-0.2463 x RE(c)). We conclude that the energy requirement of crossbred Bos indicus x Bos taurus for maintenance might be less than that of purebred Bos taurus and that RE(p) is nonlinearly, negatively correlated with RE(c). The GRNE was less for bulls than for steers and heifers. However, we found no differences in MRNE, MRNP, and GRNP for bulls, steers, and heifers of Nellore x Red Angus crossbreds.  相似文献

Sixteen yearling Angus bulls were randomly assigned to one of two temperature-controlled chambers to determine the effects of elevated ambient temperature on body functions and semen characteristics. After 8 wk adjustment at 23 C, eight heat-stressed bulls were exposed to 35 +/- 1 C for 8 h and 31 +/- 1 C for 16 h during each 24-h period, and eight control bulls were maintained at 23 +/- 1 C for 8 wk. Then all bulls were exposed to 23 C for 8 wk. Bulls were fed so that both control and stressed bulls gained at similar rates (.58 kg/d). Semen was collected with an artificial vagina twice weekly before, during and after heat stress. During treatment, the respiratory rate of stressed bulls was greater (P less than .001) than that of control bulls (54.2 +/- 1.5, 29.9 +/- 1.5 breaths/min, respectively). Rectal temperatures were increased (P less than .01) from 38.2 +/- .1 to 38.7 +/- .1 C and water consumption was increased by 35% in stressed bulls when compared with controls. Semen volume was not altered by treatment, but percentage of motile sperm decreased (P less than .01) in stressed bulls by 2 wk after the start of heat treatment. Sperm motility of stressed bulls returned to normal values 8 wk after the end of heat treatment. Similarly, the percentage of aged acrosomes on sperm from stressed bulls increased (P less than .01) by the second week of treatment and remained greater than that of controls throughout the stress period.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The carcasses and meat and fat properties of a group of five bulls fed a basal diet with an addition of 0.80 kg of dried pig excrements for 135 days were compared with a group of five control bulls fed the basal diet. The pre-mortal examination of the clinical state of the animals, the post-mortal veterinary inspection of the meat and internal organs, and the comparison of blood transaminase activity did not reveal any signs of health disorders ascribable to the experimental diet. The organoleptic examination and determination of the basic and some other technological characteristics and other properties of the meat and fat did not show any significant differences in quality to justify a decision by which the meat of the experimental bulls would be treated as less valuable or non-edible.  相似文献

Sugar beet vinasse, originating as the condensed molasses residue from yeast production, was fed to bulls and pigs to determine the feed value. It contained, per kg dry matter (DM content 66.8%), 293 g crude protein, 305 g N-free extract (therefrom 34.4 g total sugar), and 395 g crude ash. The experiment was carried out with three fattening bulls (German Holstein) and four adult pigs (Gottingen Minipig). In bulls, two balance trials lasting 20 days each (10 days adaptation; 10 days collection) were conducted in which subsequently a basal ration without and with vinasse (14% in DM) was fed. In pigs, the experiment consisted of three 12-day balance trials with the final 5 days as collection period. In the first trial, pigs received a basal diet without vinasse and in the following, a mixed diet with 16 and 43% vinasse (in DM) respectively. Digestibilities of components in vinasse in bulls were: organic matter 73.5%, crude protein 72.6%, and N-free extract 52.3%. In bulls, no influence on faeces quality could be detected while feeding 14% vinasse in DM. While feeding 16% vinasse in DM to pigs, the digestibility of organic matter amounted to 72.3% (crude protein 71.8%; NfE 74.6%). Feeding higher amounts of vinasse (43% in DM) in the diet of pigs, digestibilities were reduced (organic matter: 61.6%), which might be a result of a reduced retention time of the chyme as a result of an osmotically driven diarrhoea because of unexpectedly high sulphate (136 g/kg DM) content in the vinasse. It is concluded that because of organic matter digestibility >70% for cattle and pigs, the use of vinasse in these species in small proportions is reasonable.  相似文献

为了探讨2种营养调控剂对荷斯坦奶公牛育肥性能和屠宰性能的影响,按体重和月龄相近原则选择60头荷斯坦奶公牛,并随机分成3组,对照组饲喂基础日粮,试验1、2组分别在基础日粮中添加100 g/d调控剂Ⅰ和Ⅱ,预试期14 d,正试期31 d。结果表明,试验1、2组每头牛的日增重分别比对照组提高0.32和0.37 kg(P<0.05);与对照组相比,试验2组能显著提高胴体产肉率、肉骨比和十三块分割肉重(P<0.05),试验1、2组的屠宰率、净肉率和十三块分割肉占净肉重比例分别提高了2.96%、3.05%、1.47%和1.89%、2.82%、2.39%,但差异均不显著(P>0.05);在试验期内,试验1、2组比对照组分别多增加利润1233.80和1370.20元。结果提示,2种营养调控剂均对荷斯坦奶公牛的育肥效果较好,可以产生较好的经济效益。  相似文献

Carcass traits have been successfully used to determine body composition of steers. Body composition, in turn, has been used to predict energy content of ADG to compute feed requirements of individual animals fed in groups. This information is used in the Cornell value discovery system (CVDS) to predict DM required (DMR) for the observed animal performance. In this experiment, the prediction of individual DMR for the observed performance of group-fed yearling bulls was evaluated using energy content of gain, which was based on ultrasound measurements to estimate carcass traits and energy content of ADG. One hundred eighteen spring-born purebred and crossbred bulls (BW = 288 +/- 4.3 kg) were sorted visually into 3 marketing groups based on estimated days to reach USDA low Choice quality grade. The bulls were fed a common high-concentrate diet in 12 slatted-floor pens (9 to 10 head/pen). Ultrasound measurements including back-fat (uBF), rump fat, LM area (uLMA), and intramuscular fat were taken at approximately 1 yr of age. Carcass measurements including HCW, backfat over the 12th to 13th rib (BF), marbling score (MRB), and LM area (LMA) were collected for comparison with ultrasound data for predicting carcass composition. The 9th to 11th-rib section was removed and dissected into soft tissue and bone for determination of chemical composition, which was used to predict carcass fat and empty body fat (EBF). The predicted EBF averaged 23.7 +/- 4.0%. Multiple regression analysis indicated that carcass traits explained 72% of the variation in predicted EBF (EBF = 16.0583 + 5.6352 x BF + 0.01781 x HCW + 1.0486 x MRB - 0.1239 x LMA). Because carcass traits are not available on bulls intended for use as herd sires, another equation using predicted HCW (pHCW) and ultrasound measurements was developed (EBF = 39.9535 x uBF - 0.1384 x uLMA + 0.0867 x pHCW - 0.0897 x uBF x pHCW - 1.3690). This equation accounted for 62% of the variation in EBF. The use of an equation to predict EBF developed with steer composition data overpredicted the EBF predicted in these experiments (28.7 vs. 23.7%, respectively). In a validation study with 37 individually fed bulls, the use of the ultrasound-based equation in the CVDS to predict energy content of gain accounted for 60% of the variation in the observed efficiency of gain, with 1.5% bias, and identified 3 of the 4 most efficient bulls.  相似文献

本文旨在研究在基础饲粮中添加过瘤胃蛋氨酸(RPMet)、过瘤胃赖氨酸(RPLys)对荷斯坦奶公牛生长性能和胴体化学成分的影响,探讨用RPMet和RPLys替代部分饲粮粗蛋白质的可行性。试验采用完全随机设计,选择12月龄左右,体重、体尺相近的健康奶公牛25头,随机分为5组,每组5头。对照组饲喂基础饲粮,4个试验组M15、L30、M15+L30、LCP组分别在基础饲粮中添加RPMet 15 g/d、RPLys 30 g/d、RPMet 15 g/d+RPLys 30 g/d、RPMet 15 g/d+RPLys 30 g/d(同时降低饲粮粗蛋白质2.20%)。预试期10 d,正试期150 d。结果表明,与对照组相比:1)基础饲粮中添加RPMet和RPLys对奶公牛干物质采食量无显著影响(P0.05);L30、M 15+L30、LCP组末重和平均日增重显著增加(P0.05),且均以M 15+L30组最高,但M 15+L30组与LCP组无显著差异(P0.05);M 15+L30和LCP组料重比显著降低(P0.05),以M 15+L30组最低,这2组间差异不显著(P0.05)。2)M 15+L30和LCP组奶公牛胸围和胴体中粗蛋白质含量显著提高(P0.05),这2组间差异不显著(P0.05)。3)M15+L30和LCP组奶公牛胴体中必需氨基酸苏氨酸、亮氨酸、精氨酸的含量显著提高(P0.05),这2组间差异不显著(P0.05),M15+L30组异亮氨酸含量显著提高(P0.05);M15+L30和LCP组奶公牛胴体中非必需氨基酸中天冬氨酸、丝氨酸、谷氨酸、甘氨酸、丙氨酸、半胱氨酸、脯氨酸以及总氨基酸含量显著提高(P0.05),L30和M15+L30组酪氨酸含量显著提高(P0.05),这2组间均无显著差异(P0.05)。由此可见,饲粮中添加RPMet和RPLys在一定程度上提高了奶公牛的生长性能,增加了胴体中蛋白质的合成和氨基酸沉积,且添加RPMet 15 g/d+RPLys30 g/d能够在一定程度上替代部分饲粮粗蛋白质(2.20%)。  相似文献

Anterior pituitary gland contents of LH and LHß- and α-subunit mRNAs, and circulating concentrations of LH and testosterone, were determined in bulls treated with the LH-releasing hormone (LHRH) agonist deslorelin. Brahman (Bos indicus) bulls (14-month-old) were allocated to two groups and received the following: Control (n = 5), no treatment; Deslorelin (n = 4), four deslorelin implants (approximately 200 μg total deslorelin/day) for 36 d. Plasma concentrations of LH were higher in bulls treated with deslorelin on Day 1, had returned to typical levels by Day 8, and did not differ for control bulls and bulls treated with deslorelin from Day 8 to Day 29. Pituitary content of LH on Day 36 was reduced (P < 0.001) in bulls treated with deslorelin (33 ± 4 ng/mg) compared with control bulls (553 ± 142 ng/mg). Relative pituitary content of LHß-subunit mRNA was also reduced on Day 36 in bulls treated with deslorelin (Control, 0.65 ± 0.10; Deslorelin, 0.22 ± 0.04; P = 0.003). However, α-subunit mRNA relative content did not differ (Control, 0.73 ± 0.15; Deslorelin, 1.06 ± 0.12; P > 0.05). Plasma concentrations of testosterone were increased over the period of the experiment in the bulls treated with deslorelin compared with control bulls. This is the first demonstration of reduced pituitary content of LHß-subunit mRNA and LH, and unaltered content of α-subunit mRNA, in bulls treated with LHRH agonist. This was associated with apparently typical plasma concentrations of LH and elevated plasma testosterone. The effects of anabolic implant on growth, carcass characteristics, and serum hormones were examined in 30 young bulls and steers fed a growing diet then a finishing diet. In a 2 X 3 factorial arrangement, steers and bulls received an implant of trenbolone acetate (TBA), TBA and estradiol-17 beta (E2), or no implant. Blood samples were taken serially (every 20 min for 6 h) at intervals during the growing and finishing phases. Percentage of DM, fat, protein, and ash and Warner-Bratzler shear test were measured and taste panel evaluations of the 9-10-11 rib section were obtained. Treatment with TBA and E2 increased weight gain in steers but not in bulls. There were no differences in feed efficiency, serum growth hormone (GH), and cortisol concentrations between bulls and steers or between treated groups and controls in bulls or steers, although during the finishing phase mean GH concentrations in treated steers were twofold higher than in controls and were similar to those in the bull groups. Serum insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) increased twofold during the growing phase, then remained at that level. Steers implanted with TBA and E2, which had the highest gains among the steer groups, had the highest serum GH and IGF-I. Longissimus steaks from bulls treated with TBA alone or TBA and E2 were comparable to steaks from steers in the shear test. Taste panelists found steaks from TBA- and E2-treated bulls to be similar in tenderness and connective tissue to steaks from steers.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A comparative study of haematological changes subsequent to Trypanosoma vivax and Trypanosoma congolense infections was carried out using 24 Zebu bulls during a period of 12 weeks. Eight bulls were infected with T. vivax, another eight with T. congolense and eight served as controls. Infected bulls developed chronic trypanosomiasis which was characterized by many clinical manifestations including intermittent pyrexia. Elevated rectal temperatures of up to 105 and 106 degrees F were recorded, respectively, in all bulls infected with T. vivax or T. congolense. Mean parasitaemia was higher and more chronic in T. congolense-infected bulls and ranged between means of 0 and 3.06 in all infected bulls. There was a slight and transient drop in packed cell volume (PCV) of T. vivax-infected bulls as against a marked and more chronic drop in T. congolense-infected bulls. Mean PCV of T. vivax- and T. congolense-infected bulls and controls ranged between 28 and 38, 17 and 38, and 31 and 38%, respectively. Haemoglobin (Hb) concentrations also decreased in infected bulls. The decrease was greater and more chronic in the T. congolense-infected bulls. Values ranged between means of 10.47 and 13.84, 5.44 and 14.16, and 10.24 and 14.12 g dl-1 in T. vivax- and T. congolense-infected and control bulls, respectively. Total plasma proteins also decreased in infected bulls; this was more marked in the T. congolense-infected group. Values for T. vivax-infected, T. congolense-infected and control bulls ranged between means of 7.66 and 8.99, 6.26 and 8.81, and 7.94 and 8.78 g dl-1, respectively.2+ that the indigenous T. vivax strains are more  相似文献
