Diel and ontogenetic changes in larval body density related to swim bladder volume were investigated in Pacific bluefin tuna, Thunnus orientalis, to determine the causality of larval mortality – adhesion to the water surface and contact with the tank bottom during seedling production. The density of larvae with deflated swim bladders increased with total length and days post hatch. Diel density change was observed after day 2 post hatch; owing to daytime deflation and night‐time inflation of the swim bladder, the density was relatively higher during the daytime. Increased swim bladder volumes clearly reduced larval density during the night‐time after day 9 post hatch. However, the density of larvae with inflated swim bladders was greater than rearing water density (Δρ>0.0099). The small density difference between larvae and rearing water (Δρ=0.0022?0.0100) until day 4 post hatch may have caused larval mortality by adhesion to the water surface because larvae can be easily transported to the water surface by aeration‐driven upwelling in rearing tanks. Density increased noticeably from day 5 to day 9 post hatch. The increased density difference (Δρ=0.0065?0.0209) in larvae and rearing water possibly induced mortality by contact with the tank bottom because larvae sink particularly during the night‐time on ceasing swimming.  相似文献

Tilapia and striped bass larvae inflate their swim bladders on the 7th–9th and 5th–7th days after hatching, respectively. The primordial bladder of Tilapia has no pneumatic duct and larvae do not gulp atmospheric gas for the initial swim bladder inflation. Prominent columnar epithelium is characteristics of the bladder of Tilapia prior to inflation. Hypoxic conditions inhibit inflation and result in degeneration of the columnar epithelium and the irreversible malfunction of the swim bladder. The swim bladder of the striped bass has a glandular epithelium and a pneumatic duct prior to inflation. The mode of the initial inflation and functional role of the pneumatic duct remain unclear, although strong aeration and turbulent water in the rearing containers were observed to be main factors enhancing normal inflation of the larval swim bladder.  相似文献

Effects of diet, salinity, and consumption of endogenous reserves on the growth, survival and swim bladder inflation of European sea-bass larvae were studied. Primary inflation of the swim bladder occurs in 7-day-old larvae. Inflation is synchronized with the absorption of endogenous reserves. The kinetics of the consumption of these reserves varies with the diets tested, and is the slowest at higher salinity (28.7 and 37.7‰). Best results were obtained with larvae fed on Artemia nauplii. Larvae raised at lower salinity (19.7 and 10.7‰) had the highest proportion of inflated swim bladders. Larvae raised at 28.7‰ salinity had the best survival rate, while those raised at 38.7‰ had the best growth rate. Larval mortality was associated with inappropriate functioning of the swim bladder. Larvae exposed to decreasing salinity during rearing showed very high survival rates and normal swim bladder inflation.  相似文献

Along the Atlantic coast black sea bass occur from the Gulf of Maine to Florida and support important commercial and recreational fisheries. Interest in commercial production of black sea bass has increased in recent years due to high demand and limited seasonable availability. Efforts towards large-scale production have been hampered by a high incidence of early larval mortality. Two of the most important environmental variables affecting hatchery production of marine finfish larvae are temperature and salinity. In the wild, larval black sea bass are found in waters with temperatures of 12–24 C and salinity levels of 30–35 ppt. Studies were conducted to define the temperature and salinity ranges that support growth and development of black sea bass during early life stages. Three developmental phases were investigated: 1) fertilization to hatch: 2) hatch through yolk sac absorption: and 3) during the initial exogenous feeding stage (5–14 days post hatch: DPH). Fertilized eggs were obtained by manual spawning of fish following administration of LHRHa. Fertilized eggs were transferred to 300-mL glass Petri dishes or 500-mL beakers to assess the effects of salinity and temperature through hatch and yolk sac absorption, respectively. To determine environmental effects on growth and survival during initial exogenous feeding 400 actively feeding larvae were cultured in green water and fed enriched rotifers for a 9-d period. For investigation of the effect of salinity, sea water (35 ppt) was diluted gradually to 15, 20, 25, and 30 ppt and maintained at 21 C. For examination of the effect of temperature, seawater was adjusted from 21 C to 12, 15, 21, 27, or 30 C at a rate of 3 C/h. No eggs hatched at 12 C or when salinity was maintained at 0 or 5 ppt. Hatching was uniformly high (≥ 85%) at temperatures between 15 and 27 C and at salinities ≥ 15 ppt. Survival through yolk sac absorption was greatest at temperatures between 18 and 27 C and at salinities ≥ 20 ppt. Survival through first feeding stage was highest at temperatures ≥ 18 C and 30 ppt salinity. Larval growth through first feeding was not significantly affected by salinity level but did increase with rearing temperature. The results indicate that survival and development of black sea bass during early life stages are most favorable at temperatures >18 C with salinity levels approaching full strength seawater.  相似文献

In this study, we aimed to clarify the mechanism of sinking death during the larval stage of Pacific Bluefin tuna Thunnus orientalis by investigating the effects of swimming performance on sinking death, using a behavioral approach. Swimming performance was examined 3–9 days after hatching (DAH) under day and night light conditions in cuboid experimental tanks. Swimming behavior variables such as swimming speed and swimming angle were measured under both light conditions. Larvae in the daytime experiment and larvae with inflated swim bladders at night were distributed on the surface layer of the water column. In contrast, larvae with uninflated swim bladders at night were frequently observed swimming vertically or sinking to the bottom of the tank. Larvae with inflated swim bladders at night were always distributed beneath the surface until the next morning (survival rates were 100 %). However, larvae with uninflated swim bladders at night swam upward repeatedly and later sank to the bottom of the tank (survival rates were 60 % and 38 % at 5 and 9 DAH, respectively). Larvae with uninflated swim bladders were not always able to maintain their swimming depth by swimming until the next morning. Additionally, their swimming speed and vertical swimming frequency (ratio) depended on the illumination and swim bladder conditions. Our findings show that larvae with uninflated swim bladders at night were associated with a higher risk of sinking death. The swimming energy capacity of Pacific Bluefin tuna larvae, which indicates the total amount of the energy that enables individuals to swim throughout the night without feeding, was found to be linked to sinking death.  相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of maternal inherited immunity acquired from crustacean‐enhanced diets on the vitality and profitability of sea bass offspring. Newly hatched larvae produced from three groups of broodstock were evaluated. The broodstock were fed (a) a basal diet (BD), (b) a Palaemon‐supplemented diet (PSD), and (c) an Artemia‐supplemented diet (ASD) for 42 days. A total of 400,000 larvae at 3 days posthatch (DPH) produced from each treatment were stocked in larval rearing tanks at 40 larvae/L for 42 days. Survival (%) was improved by 37 and 9.96% in the groups fed ASD and PSD compared with the control group. The growth, swim bladder (%), and condition factor all significantly (p ≤ 0.05) improved in the postlarvae produced from broodstock enhanced with crustacean diets. Compared with the BD group, the serum lysozyme activities of the fish groups fed ASD and PSD increased by 45.6 and 11.7%, respectively. Sea bass fry (90DPH) produced from broodstock fed ASD showed the best tolerance to salinity/temperature stress tests. Furthermore, the profitability improved in ASD and PSD compared with the BD group. In conclusion, sea bass broodstock enhanced with Artemia biomass produced offspring of superior quality with less cost and greater profit margins.  相似文献

Early‐stage mortality due to surface water tension‐related death and due to sinking to the tank bottom was investigated for yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares (YFT), larvae. Different aeration rates and rearing water surface conditions were examined to evaluate the effect on larval survival, swim bladder inflation and growth. The percentage survival of yolk sac larvae was significantly higher when the rearing water surface was covered with fish oil at aeration rates of 0 and 50 mL min?1. The highest mortality occurred at the highest aeration rate of 250 mL min?1 regardless of surface water condition. A second experiment was conducted twice under different water surface conditions: the water surface was covered by fish oil (FO), skimmed of fish oil (SS), and was not treated (NC). The percentage survival was not significantly different between treatments after 7 days of feeding. In contrast to the survival, the proportion of larvae with inflated swim bladders was significantly higher for the NC and SS groups than that of the FO group. Results of these experiments indicate that the addition of oil to the rearing water surface without its removal interferes with the initial swim bladder inflation in YFT larvae. These results also indicate that YFT larvae need to obtain (gulp) air at the water surface for initial swim bladder inflation, and success of initial swim bladder inflation may be crucial for their survival.  相似文献

In two separate experiments, juvenile Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) were held at three different water depths (12, 24 and 37 cm) and at three different stocking densities (10, 50 and 100 kg/m3). Mortalities from swim bladder stress syndrome (SBSS) were noted over 2 months. Low water depth caused high mortality while stocking density did not induce the stress syndrome to any notable degree. An analysis of catecholamines in the blood plasma of a small number of fish indicated elevated dopamine levels in stressed fish.  相似文献

This study aimed to examine the effect of different water temperatures and light intensities on swim bladder inflation (SBI) and growth of red sea bream Pagrus major larvae to improve rearing techniques for this species. Two sets of experiments were conducted: different rearing temperatures were used in experiment 1 (19, 21, 23, and 25 °C), and different light intensities in experiment 2 (250, 1000, 4000, and 16,000 lx). Water temperature did not affect SBI frequency, but SBI initiation was accelerated at higher temperature, i.e., it was initiated on 3 days post-hatching (dph) at 25 °C and on 6 dph at 19 °C, suggesting that the promotion period for SBI, which needs a surface skimmer to be  run, also accelerated with increasing temperature in red sea bream larviculture. A higher temperature also significantly promoted larval growth, although the notochord of larvae at SBI initiation was shorter at higher temperatures. Light intensity had no effect on either the initiation or the frequency of SBI. However, light intensity of 250 lx significantly reduced early larval growth compared to light intensities higher than 1000 lx. These results indicate that light at an intensity greater than 1000 lx at the water surface is suitable for the early larviculture of red sea bream.  相似文献

At many hatcheries in Japan, a high incidence of lordosis is being reported among marine physoclistous juveniles of red sea bream, Japanese sea bass, and amberjack. Extensive studies being conducted since 1975 to tackle this problem have led to the following conclusions, and effective countermeasures are being proposed.
During early larval development in the temporary physostomous stage, fish must be able to gulp air at the water surface for normal development of the swim bladder. The juveniles that fail to gulp air swim upward in an oblique position because of insufficient buoyancy, causing the backbone to curve in a V-shape.
The managerial solutions proposed are: 1) reduce the strong water current caused by vigorous aeration; 2) provide nutrient-enriched rotifers to produce healthy swimming larvae; and 3) prevent any oily film formation on the water surface.  相似文献

The performance of Australian snapper, Pagrus auratus, larvae from 4 to 33 days posthatch (dph) under two environmental rearing regimes was evaluated in 2000‐L commercial‐scale larval rearing tanks (N = 3 tanks/treatment). The treatments were the following: (1) a varying regime of salinity (20–35 ppt), temperature (24 C), and photoperiod (12 light [L] : 12 dark [D] to swim bladder inflation and then 18L : 06D) and (2) a constant regime of salinity (35 ppt), temperature (21 C), and photoperiod (14L : 10D). The final total length (TL) and wet and dry weights (mean ± SEM) of larvae grown in the varying regime were greater (15.6 ± 0.5 mm; 42.4 ± 3.4 mg wet weight; and 7.3 ± 0.6 mg dry weight) than those of larvae grown in the constant regime (11.1 ± 0.2 mm; 12.9 ± 0.8 mg wet weight; and 2.1 ± 0.2 mg dry weight). By 33 dph, larvae in the varying regime were fully weaned from live feeds to a formulated pellet diet and were suitable for transfer from the hatchery to a nursery facility. In contrast, larvae in the constant regime were not weaned onto a pellet diet and still required live feeds. Neither survival (Treatment 1, 14.2 ± 3.0% and Treatment 2, 13.3 ± 1.9%) nor swim bladder inflation (Treatment 1, 70.0 ± 17.3% and Treatment 2, 70.0 ± 11.5%, by 13 dph) was affected by rearing regime. The incidence of urinary calculi at 7 dph was greatest initially in the varying regime; however, by 19 dph, when larvae were 8.0 ± 0.28 mm TL, very few larvae in this treatment had urinary calculi. In contrast, many larvae in the constant regime had developed urinary calculi and this continued until the end of the experiment. The incidence of urinary calculi was not associated with larval mortality. Extrapolation of the snapper larval growth curves for the constant larval rearing regime predicts that a further 15–18 d, or approximately 1.5 times longer, will be required until these larvae attain the same size and development of larvae reared in the varying regime.  相似文献

Whole-animal thyroxine (T4) and 3,5,3′-triiodothyronine (T3) levels were measured in larval and juvenile striped bass, Morone saxatilis, reared for 10 days at one of three levels of salinity (equivalent to fresh water (FW), one-third seawater (1/3 SW), and seawater (SW) and two temperatures (15°C and 20°C). The striped bass were pre-metamorphic larvae, metamorphic larvae or juveniles. The short-term effects of seawater on plasma T4 levels of juvenile striped bass were also measured. Higher salinities increased T4 levels in premetamorphic larvae. In metamorphic larvae, SW and 1/3 SW increased T4 levels and SW increased T3 levels at 20°C. This response was eliminated in those at 15°C. Whole-animal thyroid hormone content was unaffected by salinity or temperature in juvenile striped bass, although significant fluctuations in plasma T4 levels occurred in those transferred to 1/3 SW and SW. The thyroid axis of striped bass responds to salinity and temperature as early as in the pre-metamorphic stage. Thyroid hormones may mediate the beneficial effects of salinity on larval striped bass growth and survival.  相似文献

In aquaculture, unfavourable conditions experienced during early development may have strong downstream effects on the adult phenotype and fitness. Sensitivity to stress, leading to disease, reduced growth and mortality, is higher in larvae than in adult fish. In this study, conducted on sea bream (Sparus aurata), we evidenced the presence of the mu opioid receptor in gametes and larvae at different developmental stages. Moreover, we evaluated the possibility of reducing the effects of artificially produced stress, altering temperature, salinity and pH, by naloxone (an opioid antagonist) and calcium. Results evidenced that mu opioid receptor is present in larvae and in gametes of both sexes and that, during larval growth, its expression level changes accordingly; furthermore, naloxone/calcium association is efficacious in increasing the survival period of treated larvae compared to controls. We conclude that in sea bream rearing, the use of naloxone/calcium against stress can improve fish farming techniques by reducing larval mortality and consequently increasing productivity.  相似文献

The goal of mariculture research in Israel is the development of an industry, based on available sea and brackish water, in the Arava Desert, the Gulf of Eilat and along the Mediterranean coast. Urgent progress is needed due to the shortage of fresh water for agriculture. High priced euryhaline fish like Sparus aurata and Dicentrarchus labrax are the obvious choice for development along with the more common grey mullet Mugil cephalus. The aim of this paper is to present the research and zootechnical state of the art in Sparus aurata and Dicentrarchus labrax larval rearing at the National Center for Mariculture (NCM). Fertilized eggs are stocked in 600 L tanks and hatching success estimated from aliquot counts. Rearing continued for 32 d after which larvae are removed from these tanks with minimum mortality. Under normal rearing conditions these tanks produce 15-35 32 d old (10 mg, ww) Sparus aurata larvae/L (20-40% survival). Average seabass survival to 80 mg (40 d) is 35%. Tanks were continuously supplied with filtered (10 μm), temperature and salinity controlled seawater and freshly enriched food organisms through a special delivery system. This system was recently upscaled to 1,700 L tanks with equally good results for seabream larval rearing. Live food enrichment regimes for the two species were developed to maximize their growth and survival. A microdiet is presently being used from the age of 20 d. The problems involved with using dry diets with larvae were found to be associated with both their digestibility and attractivity. As a result of a salinity reduction from the ambient 40 to 25 ppt, swim bladders developed in 90% of seabream and 75% of seabass. In addition, growth rate of larvae improved by 15%. Finally, seabream tend to show strong aggressive behavior once size differences in the population of 32 d larvae is greater than 300%. Therefore, once seabream ended their 32 d hatchery period they are graded to three size groups of 5, 10.3 and 23 mg (ww). The graded fish are counted with a locally developed Computer Aided Fish Counter (CAFIC) and stocked separately in 5 m3 nursery tanks.

Viral encephalopathy and retinopathy (VER) is one of the most devastating and economically relevant diseases for marine aquaculture. The presence of betanodavirus in freshwater fish is recorded, but very little is known about VER outbreaks in marine species reared in freshwater. Our study investigated the ability of betanodavirus to cause disease in European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, reared at different salinity levels. Fish were challenged with RGNNV or mock infected by bath at different salinity levels (freshwater, 25‰ and 33‰). Fish were checked twice a day and the dead ones were examined by standard virological techniques, by rRT‐PCR and by histochemical and immunohistochemical analyses. All the infected groups showed a significant higher mortality rate than the one of the mock‐infected group. VERv presence was confirmed by rRT‐PCR. Histochemical and immunohistochemical analyses highlighted the typical lesions associated with VER. Our results highlight that salinity does not affect the ability of betanodavirus to induce clinical signs and mortality in European sea bass infected under experimental conditions. These results underline the great adaptation potential of VERv, which in combination with its already known high environmental resistance and broad host range, may explain the diffusion of this disease and the threat posed to aquaculture worldwide.  相似文献

Together with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), arachidonic acid (ARA) is being considered to be an essential fatty acid in marine fish larval diets. The objective of the present study was to determine the importance of dietary ARA levels for larval European sea bass performance, when EPA and DHA are also present in the diet. Eighteen‐day‐old larvae were fed, for 14 days, gelatine‐based microdiets containing the following ARA levels: 0.3%, 0.6% or 1.2%. Elevation of dietary ARA up to 1.2% showed a positive correlation with larval survival and a significant improvement in the specific growth rates, body weight and total length. Arachidonic acid was efficiently incorporated into larval lipids, even at a higher proportion than that in the diets. Increased accumulation of ARA did not affect the incorporation of DHA or EPA from the diet into larval total lipids. A significant positive correlation was found between dietary ARA levels and survival after handling stress, indicating the importance of this fatty acid in sea bass larvae response to acute stressors. The results show the importance of ARA for sea bass larvae, but higher dietary levels should be tested to determine whether there is a negative effect of ARA in sea bass as reported for other species.  相似文献

Abstract.– Parameters associated with optimum larval-rearing conditions are important in developing the culturing protocol of potential aquacultural species, and have yet to be addressed in terms of water temperature and salinity for Spisula solidissima similis , the southern Atlantic surfclam. Hatchery spawned S. s. similis larvae were reared to late pediveliger stage in five simultaneously conducted water temperature and salinity treatments. This larval growth and survival experimentation consisted of three salinity treatments (15, 25 and 30 ppt) in conjunction with a water temperature of 20 C, and two water temperature treatments (15 and 25 C) in conjunction with a salinity of 25 ppt. In the 20 C temperature treatment, significantly higher larval survival and greater growth occurred (both, P < 0.0001) as compared to the 15 C and 25 C treatments by day 22. Complete larval mortality occurred in the 20 C, 15 ppt salinity treatment by day 4. No significant differences in larval survival occurred between the 25 ppt, 20 C and 30 ppt, 20 C treatments by day 22 (P = 0.714). However, significantly greater larval growth occurred in the 25 ppt, 20 C compared to the 30 ppt, 20 C treatment (P = 0.009). The optimum rearing temperature and salinity for hatchery spawned S s. similis larvae to late pediveliger stage are 20 C and 25 ppt, respectively, within the temperatures and salinities tested.  相似文献

In this work performance parameters of larval pike-perch (Sander lucioperca) reared under four different light intensities (100, 500, 1000 and 2500 lx) until 21 days post hatch (dph) were investigated. As performance parameters change in length and weight, swim bladder inflation, feed consumption, natural mortality, stress induced mortality and RNA-DNA ratio were measured. Aim was to investigate the influence of light intensity on pike-perch performance during the first three weeks of larval rearing. Significant differences were found in natural and stress induced mortality as well as in weight growth. No single light exposure level combined optimal performance of all tested performance parameters. Highest light intensity of 2500 lx showed good weight growth but an increase in stress induced mortality. Bright light of 500 and 1000 lx intensity was found to improve growth and stress mortality whereas dim light conditions of 100 lx showed significantly lower natural mortality. Thus data suggested that most favorable illumination during larval pike-perch rearing comprise a tradeoff between optimal natural mortality under dim light conditions (100 lx) or optimal larval growth and stress resistance under bright light conditions (500 and 1000 lx). It is shown that high light intensities during larval rearing can be beneficial for pike-perch rearing if offspring supply is not limited.  相似文献
