A 2‐year whole‐farm study compared pasture‐based systems increasing milk production per ha by increasing either stocking rate (from 2·5 to 3·8 cows ha?1) or milk yield per cow (from 6000 to 9000 kg cow?1 lactation?1) or both. Four treatments (systems), comprising 30 cows each, were compared under the same management and grazing decision rules. The diet was based on grazed pasture, whereas pellets and conserved fodder were fed when deemed necessary. Milk production per ha increased by 0·49, 0·1 and 0·66 in the systems that increased either stocking rate, milk yield per cow or both respectively. Cows in the ‘high milk yield per cow’ systems had a significantly higher body condition score throughout the lactation, but reproductive performance was similar among all groups. Total pasture utilized (11 t DM ha?1 year?1) and pasture nutritive value were similar across all systems. This was associated with the grazing rules applied and the ability of accurately supplementing to meet deficits in available pasture. At the whole‐system level, there was a higher marginal efficiency of supplement use when increasing stocking rate than when increasing milk yield per cow or increasing both (0·18, 0·07 and 0·12 kg milk MJ?1 of metabolizable energy of supplements respectively).  相似文献

This study evaluated the prediction accuracy of grass dry‐matter intake (GDMI) and milk yield predicted by the GrazeIn model using a large database representing 8787 per cow GDMI measurements. In this study, the animal input variables (age, parity, week of lactation, potential peak milk yield, milk fat content, milk protein content, bodyweight, body condition score (BCS), week of conception, BCS at calving and calf birth weight) were investigated. The mean actual GDMI of the database was 15·9 kg DM per cow d?1 and GrazeIn predicted a mean GDMI for the database of 15·5 kg DM per cow d?1. The mean bias was ?0·4 kg DM per cow d?1. GrazeIn predicted GDMI for the total database with an RPE of 15·5% at cow level. The mean actual daily milk yield of the database was 21·3 kg per cow d?1 and GrazeIn predicted a daily milk yield for the database of 22·2 kg per cow d?1. The mean bias was +0·9 kg per cow d?1. GrazeIn predicted milk yield for the total database with an RPE of 16·7% at cow level. From the evaluation, GrazeIn predicted milk yield of all cows in late lactation with a larger level of error than in early and mid‐lactation. This error appears to be due to the persistency of the lactation curve used by the model, which results in a higher predicted milk yield in late lactation compared with the actual milk yield.  相似文献

A dairy system simulator, Dairy_sim, was designed to assess the interactions between climate and management in spring‐calving milk production systems based on the grazing of grass pastures. The simulator comprises three main components: a grass herbage growth model, an intake and grazing behaviour model, and a nutrient demand model. The simulator was initially parameterized using the Irish National Dairy Blueprint. Sensitivity analysis indicated that the simulator was most sensitive to stocking rate, milk output per cow and nitrogen fertilizer inputs, but less sensitive to other variables. Field data from four grazing systems were used to test the simulator and it was concluded that Dairy_sim was suitable for evaluating the interaction of climate and management for rotational grazing dairy systems based on perennial ryegrass pastures with Friesian cows. The simulator, Dairy_sim, was then used to evaluate the effects of the regional climates of Ireland on system management. The results indicated that, between regions, herbage production at the same input of nitrogen may vary proportionally by 0·10 and that the length of the grazing season may vary by 0·25. It was concluded that the simulator could be a useful tool for developing region‐specific dairy production blueprints.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of an early (February; F) or delayed (April; A) primary spring grazing date and two stocking rates, high (H) and medium (M), on the grazing management, dry matter (DM) intake of grass herbage and milk production of spring‐calving dairy cows grazing a perennial ryegrass sward in the subsequent summer. Sixty‐four Holstein‐Friesian dairy cows (mean of 58 d in milk) were assigned to one of four grazing treatments (n = 16) which were imposed from 12 April to 3 July 2004. Cows on the early spring‐grazing treatment were grazed at 5·5 cows ha?1 (treatment FH) and 4·5 cows ha?1 (treatment FM) while cows on the late‐grazing treatment were grazed at 6·4 cows ha?1 (treatment AH) and 5·5 cows ha?1 (treatment AM). The organic matter digestibility and crude protein concentration of the grass herbage were higher on the early‐grazing treatment than on the late‐grazing treatment. The cows on the FM treatment had significantly (P < 0·001) higher milk (24·5 kg), solids‐corrected milk (22·5 kg), fat (P < 0·01, 918 g) and protein (831 g) yields than the other three treatments. Cows on the FM treatment had a higher (P < 0·001) DM intake of grass herbage by 2·3 kg DM per cow per day than cows on the AH treatment, which had a DM intake significantly lower than all other treatments (15·2 kg DM per cow per day). The results of the present study showed that grazing in early spring has a positive effect on herbage quality in subsequent grazing rotations. The study also concluded that early spring‐grazed swards stocked at a medium stocking rate (4·5 cows ha?1; FM) resulted in the highest DM intake of grass herbage and milk production.  相似文献

The Grange Feed Costing Model was modified to simulate the economic implications of grassland management strategies for a grass‐based suckler beef calf‐to‐weanling system at the whole‐farm level. The modified model enabled costing of annual grass consumed as grazed grass and silage when the farm grazing and conservation areas are integrated. Grass growth data from sites in the south, east and north of Ireland were used. Sixty‐three scenarios were simulated, enabling analysis of site, stocking rate and silage strategy effects on total annual feed cost for the grass forage production system. Total annual feed cost (of grazed grass and grass silage) ranged from €96 to €111 per 1000 UFL (Unité Fourragère Lait) and €411 to €456 per beef cow unit (CU). The silage strategy with respect to the number of harvests and whether the silage area was grazed in the spring had negligible impact on annual total feed cost per CU. However, a tendency towards reduced annual feed cost under a two harvest, relative to a one harvest, silage strategy was observed. The lowest cost stocking rate was 2 CU ha?1. Site‐specific differences such as seasonal growth distribution and nitrogen fertilizer response rate had the greatest influence on the annual cost of the grass‐based feeding system.  相似文献

This study examined productivity, nitrogen (N) flows and N balances in grassland‐based systems of dairy production in Ireland. There were four stocking densities of dairy cows on grass/white clover pastures and four inputs of N as fertilizers, concentrates and biological fixation over 2 years; 2001 and 2002. Annual stocking densities were 1·75, 2·10, 2·50 and 2·50 cows ha?1. Associated N inputs were 205, 230, 300 and 400 kg ha?1 respectively. There were eighteen cows per system. Cows calved within a 12‐week interval in spring with a mean calving date of 28 February and lactation extended until mid‐December in each year. There were no differences in annual milk yield (6337 kg cow?1; s.e.m. 106·1), live weight or body condition score. Pre‐grazing N concentrations in herbage increased (P < 0·001) with increasing N input, whereas there were no differences in N concentrations in silage reflecting optimum N inputs for silage production. Grazed herbage accounted for 0·64, silage 0·26 and concentrates 0·10 of annual dry matter consumed by the cows. Annual intakes of N ranged from 144 to 158 kg cow?1 and were mostly influenced by N concentration in grazed herbage. Annual output of N in milk and liveweight change was 38 kg cow?1 and was not different between systems. Annual N surpluses increased with increasing N inputs from 137 to 307 kg ha?1, whereas the proportion of N inputs recovered in products declined from 0·34 to 0·24. More efficient N use was associated with lower N inputs and in particular lower N concentrations in grazed herbage.  相似文献

Grass silage made in May from S24 perennial ryegrass was offered ad libitum to twelve Ayrshire cows in a 12-week feeding experiment. The silage had a DM concentration of 217 g kg -1, contained 147 g crude protein per kg DM and had a D-value of 64·6. In addition each cow consumed 1 kg hay per d plus concentrate supplements of dried sugar-beet pulp with (A) soya bean meal, (B)‘Pruteen’, a single-cell protein (C) groundnut cake. The three concentrate supplements each contained 250 g crude protein per kg DM and were offered at the rate of 2·9 kg per 10 kg milk. The daily intakes of silage DM were 8·38, 7·94 and 7·49 kg on treatments A, B and C, respectively, with the extreme values being significantly different. The mean daily yields of milk on treatments A and B were both 16·2 kg per cow, and were significantly higher than the yield of 15·2 kg per cow on treatment C. The fat and lactose contents of the milk on the three treatments were not significantly different, but the CP content on treatment C was significantly lower than that on the other treatments. It is concluded that soya bean meal and‘Pruteen’were superior to groundnut cake as a protein supplement in a silage-based ration.  相似文献

A comparative study of grazing behaviour, herbage intake and milk production of three strains of Holstein‐Friesian dairy cow was conducted using three grass‐based feeding systems over two years. The three strains of Holstein‐Friesian cows were: high production North American (HP), high durability North American (HD) and New Zealand (NZ). The three grass‐based feeding systems were: high grass allowance (MP), high concentrate (HC) and high stocking rate (HS). In each year seventy‐two pluriparous cows, divided equally between strains of Holstein‐Friesian and feeding systems were used. Strain of Holstein‐Friesian cow and feeding system had significant effects on grazing behaviour, dry matter (DM) intake and milk production. The NZ strain had the longest grazing time while the HD strain had the shortest. The grazing time of cows in the HC system was shorter than those in both the HS and MP systems. There was a significant strain of Holstein‐Friesian cow by feeding system interaction for DM intake of grass herbage and milk production. The NZ strain had the highest substitution rate with the HP strain having the lowest. Hence, response in milk production to concentrate was much greater with the HP than the NZ strain. Reduction in milk yield as a consequence of a higher stocking rate (MP vs. HS system) was, however, greater for the HP and HD strains compared with the NZ strain. The results suggest that differences in grazing behaviour are important in influencing DM intake and milk production.  相似文献

A full lactation study compared the performance of autumn‐calving dairy cows of high genetic merit under two contrasting systems of milk production: high forage (HF) and high concentrate (HC). During the winter, animals on system HF were offered a silage with a high feeding value characteristics, supplemented with 5·5 kg of concentrate [crude protein content of 280 g kg?1 dry matter (DM)] through an out‐of‐parlour feeding system. From 14 March, these animals were given increasing access to grazing, achieving 24‐h turnout on 15 April. Thereafter, until day 305 of lactation, these animals were offered a large daily herbage allowance (23·0 kg grass DM cow?1, measured above a height of 4·0 cm), supplemented with 0·5 kg d?1 of a ‘high‐magnesium’ concentrate. During the winter, animals on system HC were offered a silage of medium feeding value, mixed with ≈14·0 kg of concentrate d?1 (crude protein content of 202 g kg?1 DM) in the form of a complete diet. These animals commenced grazing on 9 April, achieving 24‐h turnout on 18 April. From 18 April until 9 June, daily herbage allowances and concentrate feed levels were 17·0 kg DM and 5·0 kg respectively; thereafter, and until day 305 of lactation, these daily allowances were reduced to 15·0 kg of herbage DM and 4·0 kg of concentrate. Animal performance during the first 305 days of lactation for systems HF and HC, respectively, were as follows: total concentrate DM inputs, 842 and 2456 kg; total silage DM intakes, 2205 and 1527 kg; total grass DM intakes, 3019 and 2044 kg; total feed DM intake, 6061 and 6032 kg and total milk output, 7854 and 8640 kg. Total milk output per cow with system HF was 786 kg lower than for system HC, despite similar total DM intakes, suggesting a greater total nutrient requirement with the former to support a given milk production. However, the study confirms that relatively similar levels of animal performance can be achieved from systems based on very different sources of nutrient supply.  相似文献

Abstract The effects of level of concentrate supplementation on the response of dairy cows to grass silage‐based diets containing a constant proportion of fodder beet were examined. Forty Holstein‐Friesian dairy cows of mixed parity were used in a 2 × 5 factorial design experiment. Two basal diet types [grass silage alone or grass silage mixed with fodder beet in a 70:30 dry matter (DM) ratio] were offered ad libitum, and the effects of five levels of concentrate supplementation (mean = 3·0, 5·3, 7·5, 9·8 and 12·0 kg DM per cow d?1) were examined. Concentrate supplements were offered via an out‐of‐parlour feeding system. These treatments were examined in a three‐period (period length = 4 weeks) partially balanced changeover design experiment. Fodder beet inclusion had no significant effect on the estimated metabolizable energy (ME) concentration of the ration (P > 0·001). Total DM intake, estimated ME intake, milk yield, milk protein content and milk energy output all showed significant linear increases with increasing level of concentrate inclusion (P < 0·001) while, in addition, milk yield and milk energy output exhibited a significant quadratic increase (P < 0·01). The inclusion of fodder beet in the diet reduced silage DM intake (P < 0·01) but resulted in an increase in total DM intake and estimated ME intake (P < 0·001). However, inclusion of fodder beet had no significant effect on milk yield (P > 0·05), while increasing milk protein content and milk energy output (P ≤ 0·05). Milk energy output, as a proportion of estimated ME intake, was significantly (P < 0·001) reduced by fodder beet inclusion (0·44 vs. 0·38). Despite large increases in estimated ME intake with the inclusion of fodder beet at all levels of concentrate supplementation, milk energy output responses were small, resulting in an overall reduction in the efficiency of conversion of ME intake into milk energy output. An increased partitioning of dietary ME intake to tissue gain is suggested as the most likely explanation for the observations made.  相似文献

Eighty winter‐calving dairy cows of mixed parity were managed in four grassland‐based systems of milk production (F‐F, F‐C, C‐F and C‐C) over a full lactation (year 1) and during the winter period of the subsequent lactation (year 2). During the winter periods cows on systems F‐F and F‐C were offered silages of high feeding value, supplemented with 6·0 kg d?1 of concentrate [crude protein (CP), 307 g kg?1 dry matter (DM)] through an out‐of‐parlour feeding system, while cows on systems C‐F and C‐C were offered silages of medium feeding value, supplemented with c. 12·8 kg d?1 of concentrate (CP, 204 g kg?1 DM), in the form of a complete diet. After 25 February in year 1, cows on systems F‐F and C‐F were given access to grazing for periods of increasing duration, achieving full turnout on 17 April. Thereafter, until 21 October, these cows were offered a high daily allowance of herbage within a flexible grazing system (23·0 kg DM per cow, measured above a height of 4·0 cm), supplemented with 0·5 kg d?1 of a ‘high magnesium’ concentrate. Cows on systems F‐C and C‐C (year 1) commenced grazing on 1 April, achieving full turnout on 17 April. Thereafter, until 20 October, these cows were managed on a restricted allowance of herbage in a rotational paddock grazing system, with concentrates (average allocation, 3·9 kg d?1) being offered according to yield. In year 2, cows on systems F‐F and C‐F were given access to grazing for periods of increasing duration, from 11 March to 8 April, at which point the study was terminated. With systems F‐F, F‐C, C‐F and C‐C, mean feed inputs and milk outputs (per animal) during year 1 of the study were as follows: total concentrate DM intakes [881, 1272, 1729 and 2171 kg (s.e.m. 96·1)]; total silage DM intakes [1722, 1713, 1047 and 1154 kg (s.e.m. 70·7)], total grass DM intakes (3245, 2479, 3057 and 2481 kg) and total milk outputs [7541, 7527, 7459 and 7825 kg (s.e.m. 305·8)] respectively. Stocking rates associated with each of the four systems were 2·2, 2·5, 2·6 and 2·9 cows per hectare respectively. Performance of dairy cows on the systems during the winter of year 2 was similar to that recorded during year 1. The results of this study indicate that similar levels of milk output, DM intakes, tissue changes and plasma metabolite profiles can be achieved from grassland‐based systems involving very different combinations of grass silage, grazed grass and concentrate feeds.  相似文献

The effect of offering a total mixed ration of silage and concentrate (proportionately 0·44 silage) system [indoor feeding system (IF)] was compared with grazing at a high daily herbage allowance with a low level of concentrate supplementation [early grazing system (EG)] in early spring on the performance of spring‐calving dairy cows in Ireland. Sixty‐four spring‐calving Holstein–Friesian dairy cows (mean calving date, 2 February) were allocated to one of two systems between 16 February and 4 April 2004. An equal number of primiparous and multiparous cows were assigned to each system. The dairy cows on the IF system were housed for a 7‐week period and offered a diet of 10·9 kg DM cow?1 d?1 (s.d. 2·3) of concentrate, the remainder of the diet was 8·6 kg DM cow?1 d?1 (s.d. 1·9) of grass silage. The dairy cows on the EG system were offered a mean daily herbage allowance of 15·1 kg DM cow?1 d?1 (s.d. 3·7) and were supplemented with 3·0 kg DM cow?1 d?1 (s.d. 1·0) of concentrate. There was no difference in milk yield between the two systems but the cows in the EG system had a higher milk protein concentration (2·9 g kg?1) and a higher milk protein yield than in the IF system. Milk fat concentration was higher for cows in the IF than EG system (3·0 g kg?1). There was no difference in total daily dry‐matter intake between the systems, measured in week 6 of the study. Mean live weight of the cows in the IF system was greater than in the EG system. The results of the study suggest that a slightly greater performance can be achieved by a system offering a high daily herbage allowance to spring‐calving dairy cows in early lactation compared with a system offering a total mixed ration containing a high proportion of concentrate with grass silage.  相似文献

This study compared the profitabilities of systems of dairy production based on N‐fertilized grass (FN) and grass‐white clover (WC) grassland and assessed sensitivity to changing fertilizer N and milk prices. Data were sourced from three system‐scale studies conducted in Ireland between 2001 and 2009. Ten FN stocked between 2·0 and 2·5 livestock units (LU) ha?1 with fertilizer N input between 173 and 353 kg ha?1 were compared with eight WC stocked between 1·75 and 2·2 LU ha?1 with fertilizer N input between 79 and 105 kg ha?1. Sensitivity was confined to nine combinations of high, intermediate and low fertilizer N and milk prices. Stocking density, milk and total sales from WC were approximately 0·90 of FN. In scenarios with high fertilizer N price combined with intermediate or low milk prices, WC was more (P < 0·05) profitable than FN. Based on milk and fertilizer N prices at the time, FN was clearly more profitable than WC between 1990 and 2005. However, with the steady increase in fertilizer N prices relative to milk price, the difference between FN and WC was less clear cut between 2006 and 2010. Projecting into the future and assuming similar trends in fertilizer N and milk prices to the last decade, this analysis indicates that WC will become an increasingly more profitable alternative to FN for pasture‐based dairy production.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to identify and understand grassland management practices employed on dairy farms in the Republic of Ireland, including grazing‐season length, concentrate‐feed input, uptake of new grassland‐management technologies and frequency and methods of sward renewal. The sample population for the survey was chosen from a proportionate representation of all milk suppliers taken from three of the largest dairy processors in the Republic of Ireland. The sample was subsequently broken down into three stocking rate (SR) and three size categories of milk quota (Qcat) to investigate their effects on the survey variables. Both SR and Qcat had significant effects on the proportion of participants adopting grass‐based technologies and on the amount of supplementary feed offered. Grazing‐season length increased from 228 d in Qcat1 to 249 d in Qcat 3 but was unaffected by SR (241 d; s.d. 3·05). The proportion of the grazing area reseeded annually was significantly affected by SR, increasing from 0·044 to 0·095 of the grassland area as SR increased from SR1 to SR3, with no effect of Qcat (0·068). The results show that on‐farm grass utilization is low, with significant potential for expansion and increased efficiency through increased SRs, greater adoption of grassland‐management technologies and higher levels of sward renewal.  相似文献

Two experiments are described in which two levels of winter feeding and three levels of herbage allowance during the grazing season were imposed upon March/April calving British Friesian dairy cows. The winter treatments resulted in differences in live weight and milk yield at turnout of 35 and 53 kg and 3·4 and 3·2 kg d-1 for the two trials. Subsequently, when grazed at generous herbage allowances, the cows were able to compensate for much of this difference but when herbage was restricted the milk yield differences were accentuated. Groups of cows from each winter treatment were offered 25, 50 or 75 (Experiment 1) and 30, 50 or 70 (Experiment 2) g herbage DM per kg LW daily during the grazing season. Daily herbage intakes on the three allowances in each trial were 14·1, 13·3, 10·7 and 12·5, 12·1, 11·5 kg OM and milk yields were 16·0, 15·3, 12·5 and 15·2, 14·3, 11·8 kg SCM respectively. Both intake and milk production were depressed once the cows were forced to consume more than 50% of herbage on offer or to graze the sward down to a mean height of less than 8–10 cm. Grazing behaviour observations indicated that under rotational managements the cows did not compensate for restrictions in available herbage by grazing longer. Highest levels of milk production per unit area were observed in both trials when production per cow was depressed by 20–25%.  相似文献

In a summer‐dominant high‐rainfall, yet seasonally dry environment, soil water dynamics and dry‐matter (DM) production were monitored during 2006–12, for three perennial pasture types: old man saltbush (Atriplex nummularia ssp. nummularia with native grass), native grass (Bothriochloa macra and Rytidosperma bipartita dominant) and lucerne (Medicago sativa cv. Venus). Plant root depth of the old man saltbush pasture (1·5 m) was greater than that of native grass (1·2 m), but equal to that of lucerne (1·5 m), resulting in equivalent levels of maximum extractable water (MEW; mm, 0–1·7 m) for saltbush and lucerne in five of the six seasons. Lucerne (MEW 242 mm) extracted more soil water than native grass (144 mm), but was similar to old man saltbush (205 mm). In the second year of growth, both the lucerne and old man saltbush pastures achieved their maximum yields of 16·8 and 7·9 t DM ha?1 respectively, but thereafter declined. The decline in yield of lucerne in later years was associated with a significantly lower plant frequency and increase in proportion of weeds. The decline in yield of old man saltbush appeared to be associated with an increasingly dry soil profile, despite receiving rainfall that was above average. The yield of the native grass pasture increased during the study as the proportion of weeds declined, and the presence of saltbush plants did not compromise the yield of perennial grasses in the inter‐row spaces. The implications of these findings for livestock production systems in this environment are discussed.  相似文献

Silages were made from pure crops of perennial ryegrass, red clover and white clover over 2 years. In all but one case the silage was stored as bales. A silage additive specially adapted for bales (Kofasil UltraTM) was used for all silages and they were all of good hygienic quality. The additive contained sodium nitrite, hexamethylene, tetraamine sodium bensoate and sodium propionate. The silages were offered ad libitum, either pure or mixed [grass/clover 0·50/0·50 on a dry‐matter (DM) basis] with a fixed amount (8 kg) of concentrate. Two experiments, one in each year, were performed with high‐yielding multiparous dairy cows in mid‐lactation, and both rumen‐cannulated and intact cows were used. The experiments were carried out using an incomplete changeover design with fifteen cows and five treatments each year. The cows consumed large quantities of these silages (12·7–16·3 kg DM per cow per day). The highest intakes were obtained when the red clover and the 0·50 red clover:0·50 perennial ryegrass silage diets were offered. However, there was a difference between years. In year 1, 0·50 red clover:0·50 perennial ryegrass and 0·50 white clover:0·50 perennial ryegrass silage diets showed the highest intakes while pure perennial ryegrass and white clover silage diets gave lower intakes. In year 2 the highest intake of silage was obtained when the diet containing silage from red clover from a second cut was offered, while the silage from red clover from a first cut gave the lowest intake. The voluntary intakes of silages from white clover and perennial ryegrass were intermediate. No cases of bloat or other digestive disturbances were observed. Milk yield was significantly lower for the perennial ryegrass silage diet compared with all other diets in year 1. In year 2 milk yield was highest for the white clover silage diets and lowest for the red clover silage diets from both cuts. In year 1 there were relatively small differences in milk composition while in year 2 milk fat content was significantly lower with white clover silage diet and milk protein content was significantly higher with the perennial ryegrass diet. The overall conclusion from these experiments was that cows were able to consume large quantities of pure legume silage without serious disturbance to their metabolism. Differences in measurements of rumen metabolism were found between diets and especially between years. Milk production differences appears to be coupled to both differences in rumen physical characteristics, such as passage rate and particle size as well as differences in volatile fatty acid production in the rumen.  相似文献

Two field experiments were conducted at Teagasc, Moorepark, Ireland, to determine the effect of sowing date and nitrogen application on the dry‐matter (DM) yield and crude protein (CP) content of forage rape and stubble turnips. The first experiment consisted of three sowing dates (1 August, 15 August and 31 August) with four rates of fertilizer N (0, 40, 80 and 120 kg N ha?1) on forage rape DM yields. The second experiment consisted of three sowing dates (1 August, 15 August and 31 August) with four rates of fertilizer N (0, 40, 80 and 120 kg N ha?1) over two soil sites (fertile or nitrogen depleted) on forage rape and stubble turnip DM yields. A delay in sowing from 1 to 31 August characterized a 74·5% decrease in forage rape DM yield, while stubble turnip DM yield decreased by 55·5%. Forage rape DM yields increased positively up to 120 kg N ha?1 at the first two sowing dates over both sites. In contrast, stubble turnips showed less response beyond 40 kg N ha?1 on site 1 in the first two sowing dates, while DM yield increased positively up to 120 kg N ha?1 on the less fertile site. The results indicate that the optimal sowing time for forage rape and a stubble turnip in Ireland was early August.  相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to use diurnal and temporal changes in herbage composition to create two pasture diets with contrasting ratios of water‐soluble carbohydrate (WSC) and crude protein (CP) and compare milk production and nitrogen‐use efficiency (NUE) of dairy cows. A grazing experiment using thirty‐six mid‐lactation Friesian x Jersey cows was conducted in late spring in Canterbury, New Zealand. Cows were offered mixed perennial ryegrass and white clover pastures either in the morning after a short 19‐day regrowth interval (SR AM) or in the afternoon after a long 35‐day regrowth interval (LR PM). Pasture treatments resulted in lower pasture mass and greater herbage CP concentration (187 vs. 171 g kg?1 DM) in the SR AM compared with the LR PM but did not affect WSC (169 g kg?1 DM) or the ratio of WSC/CP (1·0 g g?1). Cows had similar apparent DM (17·5 kg DM cow?1 d?1) and N (501 g N cow?1 d?1) intake for both treatments. Compared with SR AM cows, LR PM cows had lower milk (18·5 vs. 21·2 kg cow?1 d?1), milk protein (0·69 vs. 0·81 kg cow?1 d?1) and milk solids (1·72 and 1·89 kg cow?1 d?1) yield. Urinary N concentration was increased in SR AM, but estimated N excretion and NUE for milk were similar for both treatments. Further studies are required to determine the effect of feeding times on diurnal variation in urine volume and N concentration under grazing to predict urination events with highest leaching risk.  相似文献

A study of the relationship between some farm and grassland management factors and milk production at the Hannah Dairy Research Institute in the period 1951–70 is reported. During this period various aspects of farm management were altered, and total annual milk production was increased from 28,400 to 63,900 gal. The major factors influencing total milk production, in order of declining importance, were: the overall rate of stocking, milk yield per cow, the numher of milking cows as a percentage of all animals, and the acreage of grass as a percentage of the total farm acreage. Stocking rate and milk yield per cow together explained 85% of the total variation in annual milk production. No significant relationship was found between total milk production and weight of concentrates fed/gal, the amount of fertilizer N applied/aC, rainfall and sunshine data. It is suggested that the lack of a direct relationship between milk prodnction and the amount of fertilizer N applied resulted from the contribution of N from clover and from grazing animals.  相似文献
