We carried out an experiment to determine how rapidly the early incubation temperature of Atlantic cod eggs can be increased without affecting normal embryonic development and hatching. Atlantic cod eggs were incubated at a constant low temperature (4.5 ± 0.5°C; T5 – control) and four temperature increment treatments where the temperatures were increased stepwise from 4.5°C at zygote stage to 9.5 ± 05°C (T1‐8 h, T2‐32 h, T3‐64 h and T4‐96 h). Embryonic cell symmetry, embryonic mortality, hatching success and larval skeletal abnormalities, length and yolk sac volume were recorded. Larval samples were also taken at hatch for histological analysis. Except for higher egg mortality and lower hatching success in the T1, the differences among experimental groups were minor. Cell asymmetries and embryo mortalities were not significantly different between the control and T2–T4 treatment groups. Control larvae were significantly longer and had smaller yolk reserves at hatch than T1–T4 larvae and larvae from T2 had the largest yolk reserves. Tissue and organ histology of hatched larvae were similar. Considering embryonic cleavage pattern, hatching success and larval morphology and histology, a gradual increment of temperature in 32 h seems to be the better choice for future developmental programming studies in Atlantic cod.  相似文献

The effects of different egg incubation densities on the incidences of vertebral deformities in Atlantic cod larvae were investigated. Cod eggs were incubated at four different densities, 3, 6, 12 and 48 mL eggs L−1, of water.  When all the eggs hatched, larvae were reared in 30 L glass aquaria. Larval samples were taken at 0, 14, 42 and 56 days post hatch (dph) for deformity analysis. Larval samples were stained using bone and cartilage staining methods to determine vertebral deformity. Incubation densities did not have any significant effects on vertebral deformities in Atlantic cod larvae. However, the incidence of larval vertebral deformity was high at hatch and decreased as the larvae grew older until 42 dph, indicating selective mortality of deformed larvae during this period. Larvae at 56 dph, however, showed an increase in the incidence of vertebral deformity, indicating a possible nutritional or prey-type effect. To our knowledge, no studies have documented the occurrence of variable patterns in vertebral deformities in cod at various developmental stages. Overall, our results suggest that broodstock husbandry, genetics and/or nutrition could play a major role in causing vertebral deformities in Atlantic cod at hatch; however, nutrition and prey type may play a major role during metamorphosis.  相似文献

Body movements of cod (Gadus morhua L.) embryos reared from fertilization to hatch at 5.4°C were observed at various stages of development and at six experimental temperatures ranging from 0–10°C. Frequency of cod embryo body movements increased from zero at 42 degree‐days post fertilization to maximal at 73–82 degree‐days (1 or 2 days prior to hatch). Embryos were most active at 2°C (mean of 5.5 movements per 10 min), with activity declining to less than 1/10 min at 8–10°C. Lengths of hatched cod larvae reared at a series of constant temperatures (from 4–10°C) from fertilization to hatch were greater at lower incubation temperatures. Incubation temperatures of 2–4°C were found to be optimal for incubation of cod eggs.  相似文献

Commercial intensive fry production of Atlantic cod will be dependent on production of viable eggs independent of season. This can only be done by manipulation of maturation by photoperiod, but little is known about potential effects on egg characteristics and larval viability. In two cod broodstocks, maturation was successfully advanced or delayed 6 months compared with normal spawning season (March–April) by manipulation of photoperiod. The advanced broodstock spawned both in spring and autumn the same year. In two of the spawning tanks during autumn, ambient temperature was reduced after reaching 13.7°C during the first half of the spawning period. Egg quality and viability were monitored, and several egg batches were incubated, hatched and start‐fed for examination of growth and survival. Temperatures above 9.6°C resulted in significant reductions in fertilization and normal egg development. Concurrently, fractions of dead and unfertilized eggs increased with elevated temperature. Actual relative fecundity was not affected by temperature. Egg characteristics improved when temperature was controlled and lowered below 9.6°C. Occurrence of irregular spawners suggests that handling of broodstock fish should be avoided during maturation and spawning. Cod larvae originating from eggs of the advanced or delayed broodstocks were successfully reared beyond metamorphosis. Survival was 9.0–46.6% and 29.3% in green and clear water respectively. Survival correlated with both initial and average feeding conditions, but growth rate did not correlate with either of survival and feeding conditions. Specific growth rates (8.3–13.6% day−1) is comparable with other intensive rearing trials with cod, but were lower than reported from nature‐like systems.  相似文献

We estimated recent growth of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) and haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) larvae collected on the southern flank of Georges Bank in May 1992–94 from the ratio of RNA to DNA (R/D) and water temperature. Growth of both species increased with water temperature to about 7°C and then decreased. The highest growth rates were observed in May 1993 at water temperatures around 7°C. These data confirm an earlier observation of comparable temperature optima for growth of Atlantic cod and haddock larvae in the north‐west Atlantic. Comparisons of field growth rates and temperature optima with data for larvae cultured at high temperatures and prey densities in the laboratory suggest that growth may have been food‐limited at higher temperatures on Georges Bank. Given that 7°C is the long‐term mean water temperature on the southern flank in May and that climate models predict a possible 2–4°C rise in water temperatures for the western North Atlantic, our findings point to a possible adverse effect of global warming on Atlantic cod and haddock.  相似文献

To determine whether the embryonic period of channel catfish lctalurus punctatus could be extended at low temperatures, fertilized channel catfish eggs were incubated at five constant water temperatures: 4, 11. 16. 21, and 26 C. Low-temperature incubation of catfish eggs extended the embryonic period at 16 (244%) and 21 C (56%) when compared to the control hatchery incubation temperature of 26 C. All eggs incubated at 4 and 11 C died within 24–48 h. Developmental stage had a significant ( P > 0.05) effect on percent hatch at 16, 21, and 26 C. Eggs held at 16 C prior to embryonic axis formation died within 48 h. Larvae from eggs hatched at 16 C were incompletely developed and died upon acclimation to 26 C for growth tests. Growth of fry reared at 26 C, following egg incubation at 21 C. paralleled that of fry from eggs incubated at 26 C. The underdevelopment of fry at 16 C combined with the significant effect of egg stage on survival at this temperature suggests that 16 C is below the lower thermal tolerance limit for normal development in this species. The period prior to the formation of the embryonic axis may be considered a vulnerable stage in channel catfish development. Increasing the embryonic period through low temperature incubation would increase the duration of juvenile availability for researchers and commercial operations.  相似文献

In an effort to optimize the efficiency of high‐density incubation of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua and haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus eggs, the per cent hatch of eggs treated with four disinfectants (3% hydrogen peroxide, 1% polyvinylpyrrolidone iodine, 0.1% sodium hypochlorite and a 0.005% antibiotic solution – penicillin/streptomycin) was compared in both species. The per cent hatch of eggs of each species was greatest after a 24 h treatment with the antibiotic solution. The hatching success of eggs treated within the different disinfectant treatments depended upon the embryonic developmental stage in both species. The sodium hypochlorite treatment had the lowest % coverage of colony growth after disinfected haddock eggs were plated onto sterile agar media, highest survival rates to the end of the embryonic period, but the lowest per cent hatch.  相似文献

Egg samples were collected from captive striped trumpeter maintained under phase-shifted and simulated ambient photothermal regimes and incubated at 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 or 16 °C. No eggs hatched at 9 °C. Time to hatch decreased from 9.6 to 4.2 days as temperature increased from 10 to 16 °C. Survival to hatch was low at 10 and 11 °C, but similar within the range 12–16 °C. Larval length at hatching was greatest at 14 °C, with no significant difference in yolk volume or muscle depth at vent across the range of temperatures. The results of our study suggest that the optimal temperature for the incubation of striped trumpeter eggs is 14 °C, which is higher than found previously.  相似文献

The rate of swelling of barbel Barbus barbus (L.) eggs and of embryonic development increased with temperature (from 12 to 22°C). Survival of embryos decreased during the embryonic development and the highest mortality at each developmental stage occurred at 12 and 22°C. Body malformations in embryos during cleavage and organogenesis were the most frequent at 12, 14 and 22°C. During the embryogenesis, three types of embryonic body malformations were observed: yolk sac oedema, spine curvature and shortening of body. At all temperatures, most of larvae hatched with tail first but at 12 and 22°C significantly more larvae hatched with yolk sac compared to the other temperatures. The highest percentage of normal viable larvae was obtained at 14 and 18°C. Larval malformations and dead larvae were significantly most frequent at 12 and 22°C compared to the other groups. At all temperatures, spine curvatures and yolk sac deformation were the most frequent types of larval deformations.  相似文献

Broodstock of Atlantic cod were fed with three diets; astaxanthin supplemented (100 ppm kg?1) hydrated diet (30% water) (HWHAs), no additional astaxanthin supplemented (50 ppm kg?1) hydrated diet (30% water) (HWLAs) and a control diet (50 ppm kg?1 astaxanthin and 10% water). Throughout the spawning period, eggs were collected daily and fertilization success and proportion of embryos with normal cleavage were recorded. Larvae were reared using standard culture methods. Larval growth was recorded every 10 days and larval survival was recorded at 50 days post hatch. In general, broodstock fed with diets containing higher water content (HWHAs and HWLAs) and higher astaxanthin (HWHAs) had higher egg production and efficiency of egg output, lower egg incubation mortality and higher larval growth and survival. Broodstock fed with higher water content diets consumed less feed compared to control group. Also, broodstock fed with HWHAs and HWLAs recovered faster in terms of body condition than the control group. The egg bound mortality of female fish was significantly higher in control broodstock compared to broodstock fed with HWHAs and HWLAs. Broodstock fed with higher astaxanthin (HWHAs) had significantly higher fertilization success than other two groups however; no differences were found in proportion embryos with normal cleavage among different groups. Larval survival was significantly higher in HWHAs broodstock compared to other two groups. Our results showed that increased water content and astaxanthin levels in the diet could improve the condition and fecundity of Atlantic cod broodstock.  相似文献

Temperature influenced the developmental rate, survival and early growth of eggs and embryos of spotted wolffish, Anarhichas minor (Olafsen), an interesting candidate for cold water cultivation. The total incubation period decreased from 220 days at 4 °C (880 daydegrees), to 177 days at 6 °C (1062 daydegrees) and 150 days at 8 °C (1200 daydegrees) in these experiments. The proportion of normal embryos and survival of eggs until hatching were highest when the eggs were incubated at 6 °C. During the incubation period, the embryo and yolk sac size at 280 daydegrees was not significantly different but at 850 daydegrees the embryo size was inversely related to temperature and the remaining yolk sac size positively correlated with the incubation temperature. The transformation of yolk to body mass during incubation appeared to be most efficient at 4 °C, and the embryos hatched with a larger visible yolk sac at 6 and 8 °C. The largest larvae (wet‐weight) hatched from the largest eggs and the egg groups incubated at the lowest temperature (4 °C). There was no effect of temperature on meristic characters. During 6 weeks post‐hatching, all larvae from the three temperature groups were fed formulated dry feed in excess at 8 °C in low water‐level raceway systems. During startfeeding, the larvae from eggs incubated at the lowest temperature (4 °C) showed the highest growth rates (SGR). Best survival of larvae was noted among batches incubated at 6 °C.  相似文献

The consequences of photothermal manipulation of reproduction in Jasus edwardsii broodstock on the morphology of newly hatched larvae and their biochemical characteristics were examined. The treatment of compressed temperature and photoperiod delayed the time of moult, mating and egg extrusion, but reduced the period until larval hatch, and reduced the hatching duration in individual females compared to the ambient treatment of simulated natural photoperiod and water temperature. Thus, the availability of phyllosoma for hatchery rearing was extended. However, the broodstock in the compressed treatment produced smaller phyllosoma and more larvae failed to develop beyond the naupliosoma stage than animals from the ambient cycle. Phyllosoma from the compressed treatment contained a higher proportion of polar and triacylglycerol lipid classes, lower wax esters, elevated levels of the essential fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid, a higher ratio of n-3/n-6 fatty acids, and lower levels of ascorbic acid. The changes in larvae from the compressed treatment may adversely affect their viability, and are probably due to the higher water temperatures experienced during late embryonic development.  相似文献

Three embryonic stages of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) were subjected to eight constant incubation temperatures (4, 7, 10, 12, 14, 16, 19 and 22 °C) exceeding the range usually experienced in natural conditions. A change in thermal tolerance during the embryonic and larval development was registered: pre-hatching stages showed an upper thermal limit at about 16 °C, while hatched larvae survived until 22 °C. Temperature significantly affects developmental rate, resulting in a faster development and, consequently, lower yolk weight percentage at higher temperatures. We found positive relationships between incubation temperature and body size (length and weight) in the less developed stages, in which some yolk remained, but size decreased at increasing temperatures when yolk was completely exhausted.  相似文献

In recent years, an increasing interest in the farming of marine ‘white’ fish, such as cod, has been observed in the aquaculture industry. One species being considered for aquaculture development is whiting (Merlangius merlangus L.). With little data being available on the domestication of this species, our study aimed to characterize spawning behaviour and rhythmicity in captive broodstock and provide original data on egg incubation, embryonic development and larval rearing. The results observed through video recording showed that spawning mainly occurred at night with active courtship behaviour. Daily egg batches were collected from two separate spawning seasons, with an average fertilization success declining from 77% to 53%. Time to hatch was inversely related to the incubation temperature and occurred after 78 degree‐days (9 days at 8 °C), with emerging larvae ranging in size from 3.3 to 3.46 mm total length and hatch success ranging from 48.3% to 99.9%. In comparison with a clear water environment, a green water regime during the first days of larval rearing significantly improved larval growth and survival. These results are the first to describe spawning activity, early development and larval performances in whiting and are promising for the potential future development of whiting aquaculture.  相似文献

Treated with combined bilateral eyestalk ablation and maintenance of water temperature at 22.5±1.5 °C, mud crab Scylla paramamosain females with mature ovaries were induced to produce eggs outside the natural spawning season in subtropical southern China. Newly extruded eggs from a crab were incubated in vitro at 10, 15, 20, 25, 27, 30, 35 °C, respectively, and the embryonic development was closely monitored. Abnormal cell division was observed at temperatures 10 and 35 °C. At 15 °C, development remained at the gastrula stage by day 32 post‐spawn, at which time the experiment was terminated. Hatching of in vitro incubated eggs occurred between 20 and 30 °C. An increase in incubation temperature from 20 to 25 °C reduced the incubation duration by 14 days, 2.6 times of that measured for a similar 5 °C increase from 25 to 30 °C. Embryonic development of S. paramamosain was divided into stage 0–10, and the duration of each stage was recorded for each incubation temperature. The information obtained allows accurate prediction of hatching time of female crabs incubated under variable temperatures. Larvae hatched from in vitro incubated eggs were reared to reach first juvenile crab stage and their dry weights were similar to those of larvae hatched naturally.  相似文献

Two egg batches of spotted wolffish, Anarhichas minor Olafsen, were incubated at 4, 6 and 8°C. Embryo samples were fixed and compared on each 100th daydegree until hatching (up to 1000 daydegrees). Embryos, yolk sacs and chorions were dissected and the sizes, wet and dry weights were recorded separately. Comparisons of gross morphologies and measured parameters showed increasing and generally significant differences with time between the incubation temperatures. Lower temperatures produced longer and more differentiated larvae at hatch with a smaller yolk sac. Even though some unexpected deviations were registered among batches and experimental groups, it was clear that temperature affected embryo survival and time of hatching. Overall survival was best at 6°C, in agreement with results from earlier studies. Yolk conversion efficiencies measured around the hatching point were generally high, ranging from 60% to 78%, varied between the two batches and probably reflected the developmental variations between embryos and larvae at the respective ages (daydegrees). The hatching process was apparently an energy‐demanding period; yolk conversion efficiencies of unhatched embryos of similar age at each temperature were always higher. Temperature is one environmental factor that can be manipulated in hatcheries to induce hatching of viable larvae at an optimal stage of differentiation with respect to first‐feeding success and early survival.  相似文献

研究了不同盐度对暗纹东方鲀胚胎发育的影响,盐度为4和8的试验组中受精卵的发育历期、孵化率及初孵仔鱼24小时的存活能力和淡水相比均无显著差异。在盐度12及以上,绝大部分受精卵死亡,仅有极少数个体孵化出膜,且全为畸形并都在24小时内死亡;发育速度随着盐度的升高而变慢。因此,暗纹东方鲀胚胎正常发育所能耐受的盐度范围是0~8。  相似文献

Juvenile Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) and haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus L.) were subjected to 30 s air exposure stressors following acclimation to 4, 10 and 14 and 4, 8 and 14°C respectively. Both species responded to the stressor with increases in plasma cortisol at all temperatures tested. At 14°C cortisol levels peaked within 1 h post‐stressor, and returned to pre‐stressor levels within 24 h. In contrast, at 4°C, peak cortisol levels were not attained until 6 h post‐stressor in haddock and remained elevated beyond 24 h in both species. The rate of plasma glucose accumulation was greater at higher temperatures in both species and no increase was seen at 4°C. Lysozyme activity in cod, in response to the stressor, was lower than the values reported for some other species and increased slightly at 14°C. The results show that cod and haddock acclimated to different temperatures respond to common, acute stressors in a manner similar to other teleosts.  相似文献

Tank respirometry was used to study the interactive effects of protein:lipid level (55%:11% vs. 42%:16%; both diets isoenergetic) and temperature (11, 6 and 2 °C) on the magnitude and duration of specific dynamic action (SDA) in juvenile Atlantic cod and haddock. The protein:lipid level did not affect any measured variable. However, numerous temperature and species effects were observed. For example, although the maximum post-feeding oxygen consumption (30–50% above routine metabolic rate; RMR) and SDA duration (∼55–85 h; SDADUR) were not affected by temperature, SDADUR g−1 of food increased from 11 to 2 °C (from ∼3 to 12 h g food−1). While absolute SDA (mg O2) decreased by ∼60–65% in cod and ∼75% in haddock from 11 to 2 °C, due to a concomitant decrease in food consumption from ∼2.0% to 0.6% body mass, SDA comprised between 3.3% and 5.2% of the dietary energy content at all temperatures. Finally, RMR at 11 and 2 °C and SDADUR at 2 °C were 25–35% and 25% greater in cod, respectively, as compared with haddock. These results suggest that feeding reduced protein diets at low water temperatures is unlikely to improve the growth of these species.  相似文献
