OBJECTIVES: To describe placement of hinged transarticular external fixation (HTEF) frames and evaluate their ability to protect the primary repair of unstable joints while allowing joint mobility in dogs and cats. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 8 cats and 6 dogs. PROCEDURE: HTEF frames were composed of metal or epoxy connecting rods and a hinge. Measurements of range of motion of affected and contralateral joints and radiographs were made after fixator application and removal. RESULTS: 9 animals (4 cats and 5 dogs) had tarsal and 5 (4 cats and 1 dog) had stifle joint injuries. Treatment duration ranged from 45 to 100 days (median, 57 days). Ranges of motion in affected stifle and tarsal joints were 57% and 72% of control while HTEF was in place and 79% and 84% of control after frame removal. Complications were encountered in 3 cats and 2 dogs and included breakage of pins and connecting rods, hinge loosening, and failure at the hinge-epoxy interface. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: HTEF in animals with traumatic joint instability provided adjunctive joint stabilization during healing and protection of the primary repair and maintained joint motion during healing, resulting in early weight bearing of the affected limb.  相似文献

A technique for replacement of the medial and lateral collateral ligaments of the tarsocrural joint in dogs was developed based on studies of normal anatomy and function. The medial or lateral tarsocrural joint was made unstable by removal of the respective malleolus, ligaments, and joint capsule; the component parts of the collateral ligaments were replaced using suture material to function as ligament prostheses. The technique was found to be effective in maintaining near normal joint motion and adequate joint stability in cadavers immediately following surgery, and in dogs observed for up to 39 months postoperatively. No degenerative joint disease was noted upon gross or radiographic examination.  相似文献

This study has been carried out to determine the effect of neutral position, hyperextension and hyperflexion of the tarsal joint on the tibial nerve, motor action potential latency and tarsal canal compartment pressure in dogs with the aid of electrophysiological and anatomical methods. Totally twenty healthy mongrel dogs were used. Latency of motor nerve action potential (MNAPL) studies of tibial nerve via surface stimulating and needle recording electrodes was performed on right hind limbs of all the dogs. The compartment pressures of the tarsal canal with the pressure transducer were determined from both limbs from ten of the dogs. In one dog, tarsal regions of both left and right limbs were demonstrated using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Two dogs were euthanatized and tarsal regions of the dogs were sectioned for correlative anatomy. Nerve conduction studies showed that the MNAP latency of the tibial nerve were 3.55 +/- 0.097 ms, 3.76 +/- 0.087 ms and 3.39 +/- 0.097 ms in neutral, hyperextension and hyperflexion positions, respectively. Hyperflexion of the tarsal joint caused prolongation of the MNAP latency of the tibial nerve with the highest pressure value being determined in tarsal canal. From the anatomical viewpoint, the distance between the flexor hallucis longus muscle and the superficial digital muscle was the shortest during hyperflexion and the plantar branch of saphenous artery, lateral and medial plantar nerves located more laterally in cadaver and MR imaging sections. As a result of this study, it is thought that tarsal region diseases as well as long time splint in the hyperflexion position as applied in the Ehmer sling can affect the compartment pressure and nerve tension because of occupying in the tarsal canal. Raising pressure and nerve stretching in the tarsal canal compartment could cause deficiencies in the conduction velocity of the tibial nerve. This might be a result of tarsal tunnel syndrome in the dog. Clinicians could consider this syndrome in cases of tarsal region diseases as well as application of long time splint in hyperflexion of tarsal joints in dogs.  相似文献

The olecranon ligament ( ligamentum olecrani ) is described as an elastic ligament of the elbow joint in carnivores that tenses the caudomedial part of the joint capsule. The aim of the study was to compare the course and the microscopic structure of the ligament in dogs and cats. The elbow regions of 25 dogs and 15 cats were dissected to examine the topography of the ligament in extension and flexion. Furthermore, the olecranon ligaments of five dogs and five cats were studied using routine histological methods. Additional sections were stained with Resorcin–Fuchsin and Orcein to detect elastic fibres. In both species the olecranon ligament originates at the lateral surface of the epicondylus medialis humeri and inserts at the cranial crest of the olecranon extending distally to the roof of the processus anconeus . Tension of the ligament only occurs when the elbow joint is flexed maximally. This tension is increased by a slight supination of the forearm, which takes place automatically in this joint position. In dogs the ligament is long (30–40 mm in medium sized breeds) and relatively slim (approx. 2–4 mm). In cats the ligament is short (10–12 mm) and relatively strong (5–8 mm). The histological examination of the olecranon ligament shows all signs of a tight collagenous ligament with a negligible amount of elastic fibres. The olecranon ligament helps to limit the maximal flexion of the elbow joint. In addition, it controls a slight lateral movement of the processus anconeus during the automatic supination of the antebrachial bones in extreme flexion of the elbow joint.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To describe the use of skin-fold advancement flaps for covering large skin defects in dogs and cats. STUDY DESIGN: Clinical study. ANIMALS: Eight client-owned animals: 6 dogs and 2 cats. METHODS: Six dogs and 2 cats underwent reconstruction of soft-tissue wounds resulting from traumatic, neoplastic, or infectious lesions. Skin-fold flaps were created by division of the medial and lateral attachment to the proximal limb or the dorsal and ventral attachment to the trunk, enabling closure of adjacent defects on the trunk or proximal limb, respectively. RESULTS: Skin-fold flaps proved effective for closing defects in all animals. Necrosis of a portion of the flap occurred in 2 dogs due to technical errors, but the resultant defects remained amenable to primary closure. All wounds ultimately healed primarily, without major complications. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The skin-fold advancement flap is a versatile technique that lends itself to use in a variety of locations, depending on which attachments are divided. The clinical results are comparable with those reported for axial pattern and subdermal plexus flaps.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of sliding and wedge osteotomies of the humerus on the joint surface contact areas in anatomically normal elbow joints of dogs. SAMPLE POPULATION: Left thoracic limbs from 5 skeletally mature mixed-breed canine cadavers. PROCEDURE: Joint casting was performed by placement of colored polymethylmethacrylate in the elbow joint cavity followed by loading in a materials testing system at physiologic angle and load. Joint casting was performed in unaltered specimens, after 10 degrees medial opening wedge osteotomy, and after lateral sliding osteotomy of the proximal portion of the humerus. Computer-aided analysis of photographs of proximal radial and ulnar articular surfaces after each casting procedure was performed. RESULTS: The lateral sliding humeral osteotomy and 10 degrees medial opening wedge osteotomy significantly altered joint surface contact regions of the canine elbow joint. Osteotomies resulted in a reduction in the size of the radial, ulnar, and combined radioulnar contact areas. Both osteotomies also resulted in craniolateral migration of the radial contact area and craniomedial recession of the ulnar contact area. Although the reduction in ulnar contact area with these treatments is consistent with our hypotheses, the reduction in radial contact area was not anticipated. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Humeral osteotomies alter joint surface contact areas of the canine elbow joint in vitro. Humeral osteotomies may decrease contact areas on the diseased region of the joint in dogs with elbow dysplasia; however, the overall decrease in joint surface contact area suggests that these procedures may induce focal increases in pressure that may cause iatrogenic cartilage damage when applied in vivo.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To report the complications encountered following tarsal arthrodesis surgery with bone plate fixation and describe the previously unreported complication of plantar necrosis. METHODS: Medical records of 40 dogs that had been treated by tarsal arthrodesis with bone plate fixation were reviewed to determine the major and minor complications and the associated risk factors. RESULTS: The major complication rate was 32.5 per cent and the minor complication rate was 42.5 per cent. Pantarsal arthrodeses had a higher major complication rate than partial tarsal arthrodeses. Plantar necrosis was the most common major complication and occurred in 15 per cent of cases. Plantar necrosis occurred more frequently when a bone plate was applied to the medial aspect of the hock, and only occurred in cases where tarsometatarsal joint arthrodesis was performed. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Plantar necrosis is a catastrophic complication that may be associated with injury to the dorsal pedal artery or perforating metatarsal artery. Application of a bone plate to the medial aspect of the hock should be performed with care during tarsal arthrodesis, particularly where the tarsometatarsal joint is debrided of cartilage. Strict attention to surgical technique and proper postoperative coaptation is critical to reduce the potential for complications with tarsal arthrodesis.  相似文献

In family Lemuridae, anatomical variations exist. Considering its conservation status (near threatened) and presence of similarities between strepsirrhines and primitive animals, it was thought to be beneficial to describe the gross osteology and radiographic anatomy of the pelvis and hind limb of ring‐tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) as a reference for clinical use and species identification. Radiography was performed in 14 captive adult ring‐tailed lemurs. The radiographic findings were correlated with bone specimens from two adult animals. Additionally, computed tomography of the hind limbs was performed in one animal. The pelvic bone has a well‐developed caudal ventral iliac spine. The patella has a prominent tuberosity on the cranial surface. The first metatarsal bone and digit 1 are markedly stouter than the other metatarsal bones and digits with medial divergence from the rest of the metatarsal bones and digits. Ossicles were seen in the lateral meniscus, inter‐phalangeal joint of digit 1 and in the infrapatellar fat pad. Areas of mineral opacity were seen within the external genitalia, which are believed to be the os penis and os clitoris. Variations exist in the normal osteology and radiographic appearance of the pelvis and hind limb of different animal species. The use of only atlases from domestic cats and dogs for interpretative purposes may be misleading.  相似文献

Diseases that are associated with infections or allergic reactions in the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts are major causes of morbidity in both cats and dogs. Future strategies for the control of these conditions require a greater understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the induction and regulation of responses at the mucosal surfaces. Historically, the majority of the fundamental studies have been carried out in rodents or with tissues obtained from man, but the expanding range of reagents available for the study of farm and companion animals provides opportunities for study in a wider range of animals including cats and dogs. To date, these studies have tended to be focussed on characterising the cellular distributions in healthy animals and in groups of cats and dogs identified as having an increased risk of mucosal disturbance. Where species comparisons of mucosal immune systems have been made, the results have tended to be divided between monogastric and ruminant animals. It is then not surprising that the mucosal immune systems of both cats and dogs bear greatest similarity to that documented for man and pigs. For example, IgA is the dominant immunoglobulin in mucosal secretions of cats and dogs and oral tolerance can be induced following the introduction of novel antigens into the diet. Also like several other species, cats become transiently hypersensitive to the newly introduced dietary antigen prior to the establishment of tolerance. In contrast, there are a number of potentially important differences. In particular, there are significant differences between cats and dogs in the expression MHC class II molecules on gut epithelial cells. Similarly, it has been reported that cats have elevated numbers of intraepithelial lymphocytes (IEL) and that a proportion of these express surface IgM. It remains to be determined if these differences reflect the way in which the animals are maintained and if they may have greater biological significance.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to evaluate, retrospectively, carpal and tarsal arthrodesis in small dogs and cats by using veterinary cuttable plates in 6 animals and comparing those with arthrodesis stabilized with other implants in 9 animals. Veterinary cuttable plates were used for 1 pancarpal, 2 partial tarsal, and 3 pantarsal arthrodeses. Other implants were used to stabilize 1 pancarpal, 6 partial tarsal, and 2 pantarsal arthrodeses. In the veterinary cuttable plates group, complications included 2 cases with pressure sores and 1 case with screw loosening. One animal was lost to follow-up and 4 of the remaining 5 were always weight-bearing. In the other group, there were 2 cases with pressure sores, 1 case with dermatitis, and 2 cases with pin migration. Six out of 9 animals were always weight-bearing. The use of veterinary cuttable plates appears to be a suitable option with a good clinical outcome.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: Lateral thoracotomy is widely used for surgical management of thoracic diseases in small animals. The purpose of this paper is to describe the indications for lateral thoracotomy in dogs and cats and the associated outcomes and complications. METHODS: Medical records of animals undergoing lateral thoracotomy were reviewed and owners contacted regarding complications and survival. Relationships between signalment and treatment variables and outcome variables were investigated. RESULTS: Seventy dogs and 13 cats underwent lateral thoracotomy. Sixty-two per cent of cats and 91 per cent of dogs survived to discharge. Survival to discharge was significantly lower in cats than dogs, for neoplastic than non-neoplastic disease and in older animals. Survival to discharge was higher in animals undergoing patent ductus arteriosus ligation than in those undergoing lung lobectomy or oesophageal surgery. Survival to discharge was not related to surgeon experience. The incidence of complications was not related to species, age, disease, duration of surgery, surgeon experience or duration of thoracostomy tube placement. A low complication rate (5 per cent) was associated with thoracostomy tubes. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The approach of lateral thoracotomy has a minimal complication rate and animals with a disease requiring this approach have a high survival rate.  相似文献

Cats show a higher capability to supinate their forearms than dogs. This suggests a special arrangement of the collateral ligaments of the feline elbow joint. Therefore, the course of the ligaments was examined in 13 adult cats. The size of the ligaments was measured, and effects of passive joint movements were studied. Ligaments of five additional cats were examined histologically. The lateral collateral ligament (LCL) had a superficial and deep part, both originating from the humerus. The free humeral portion of the LCL was short and contained fibrous cartilage. Fibre bundles of the deep part inserted into the annular ligament, while the remaining deep fibres and the superficial part inserted with a long antebrachial portion on the radius. The medial collateral ligament (MCL) originated from the humeral epicondyle and divided into cranial and caudal parts. The caudal part inserted medioproximally on the ulna, while the cranial part attached primarily with a long thin part to the caudal aspect of the radius. During supination, the MCL loosened thus allowing medial widening of the joint space, up to 2 mm. A specific feature of the feline elbow is the long thin part of the MCL. Its course through a special furrow distal to the medial coronoid causes the tightening of the feline MCL during pronation. Apart from that, the feline collateral ligaments combine the features of both human and canine cubital anatomy. This explains the range of supination in cats, which is intermediate between humans and dogs.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to assess the influence of high-intensity laser therapy (HILT) on vein diameter and on body surface temperature changes in the tarsal joint area in a group of clinically healthy racehorses. The hypothesis of the study was that HILT increases vein diameter and body surface temperature in healthy tissue. The study involved 16 Thoroughbreds being subjected to ultrasonographic examination to assess changes of diameter of the cranial branch of the medial saphenous vein and thermographic examination to indicate temperature change of the dorsal surface of the tarsal joint, just before and immediately after HILT treatment. Vein diameter and mean surface temperature of the tarsal joint significantly increased after HILT treatment. In addition, the study was the first to describe the photothermal effect of HILT in healthy horses. More studies are necessary to specify the parameters of the procedure, that is, wavelength, energy density, or time of the procedure, depending on the patient’s individual characteristics and type of tissue.  相似文献

Objective— To assess the ability of an operator to differentiate intact from transected canine and feline elbow joint collateral ligaments (CL) using a reported manipulative test (Campbell's test) and to determine the potential for elbow joint luxation in canine and feline elbows with intact, transected, and surgically stabilized CL. Study Design— In vitro biomechanical study. Sample Population— Canine (n=6) and feline cadavers (n=3). Methods— Thoracic limb specimens were mounted on a custom‐built jig with the elbows and carpi fixed in 90° of flexion. Angles of pronation and supination were recorded after applying rotational forces to the manus. Attempts were made to manually luxate each elbow with intact CL. Constructs were re‐evaluated after sequential sectioning of the medial (MCL) and lateral (LCL) collateral ligaments and after insertion of a new CL prosthesis. Results— Mean (±SD) angles of rotation in dogs increased from 27.3±8° (range, 16.7–41.3°) in pronation to 58.9±9.2° (range, 38–88.3°) after sectioning the MCL and from 45.5±10.8° (range, 30.7–67.3°) in supination to 68.9±17.2° (range, 45–94°) after sectioning the LCL. Angles of pronation and supination were subject to significant interanimal variability, with a strong correlation between increasing animal weight and smaller angles of rotation. Elbow luxation in dogs was not possible unless at least the LCL was transected. In cats, mean angles of rotation increased from 49.8±14.9° (range, 30.7–70°) in pronation to 99.1±17.6° (range, 79–111.7°) after sectioning the MCL and from 128.7±18.8° (range, 108.3–151.7°) in supination to 166.7±13.1° (range, 157.3–181.7°) after sectioning the LCL. Luxation in cats was not possible unless both CL were cut. Use of the ligament prosthesis without primary CL repair reliably prevented reluxation in all canine and feline elbows. Conclusions— Campbell's test allowed reliable differentiation of intact, transected and surgically stabilized canine and feline elbow joint CL in a cadaveric model. Luxation could not be performed by application of rotational forces to specimens with intact CL. Clinical Relevance— Clinical examination findings, specifically Campbell's test, can be used to determine elbow CL integrity in dogs and cats. The contralateral elbow should be used as a control, because of interanimal variability in angles of rotation.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate areas of articular contact of the proximal portions of the radius and ulna in normal elbow joints of dogs and the effects of axial load on size and location of these areas. SAMPLE POPULATION: Forelimbs obtained from cadavers of 5 adult mixed-breed dogs. PROCEDURE: After forelimbs were removed, liquid-phase polymethyl methacrylate was applied to articular surfaces of the elbow joint, and limbs were axially loaded. Articular regions void of casting material were stained with water-soluble paint. Relative articular contact areas were determined by computer-assisted image analyses of stained specimens. Repeatability of the technique was evaluated by analyses of casts from bilateral forelimbs of 1 cadaver. Incremental axial loads were applied to left forelimbs from 4 cadavers to determine effects of load on articular contact. RESULTS: Specific areas of articular contact were identified on the radius, the craniolateral aspect of the anconeus, and the medial coronoid process. The medial coronoid and radial contact areas were continuous across the radioulnar articulation. There was no articular contact of the medial aspect of the anconeus with the central trochlear notch. Coefficients of variation of contact areas between repeated tests and between contralateral limbs was < 20%. Significant overall effects of axial load on contact area or location were not identified. CONCLUSIONS: Three distinct contact areas were evident in the elbow joint of dogs. Two ulnar contact areas were detected, suggesting there may be physiologic incongruity of the humeroulnar joint. There was no evidence of surface incongruity between the medial edge of the radial head and the lateral edge of the medial coronoid process.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine hip, stifle, and tarsal joint ranges of motion (ROM) and angular velocities during swimming and walking in healthy dogs and dogs with surgically corrected cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture. DESIGN: Prospective clinical study. ANIMALS: 13 healthy dogs and 7 dogs with CCL rupture. PROCEDURE: Dogs with CCL rupture were enrolled in a postoperative aquatic rehabilitation program and evaluated 21 to 35 days after surgery. Dogs were filmed while swimming in a pool and while walking at a fast (1.3 m/s) or slow (0.9 m/s) pace on a treadmill. Maximal angles of extension and flexion, ROM, and angular velocities were calculated. RESULTS: In healthy dogs, swimming resulted in a significantly greater ROM in the hip joint than did walking, but in dogs with CCL rupture, ROM of the hip joint did not vary with swimming versus walking. For dogs in both groups, swimming resulted in significantly greater ROM of the stifle and tarsal joints than did walking, primarily because of greater joint flexion. Stifle joint ROM was significantly lower in dogs with CCL rupture than in healthy dogs, regardless of whether dogs were swimming or walking. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggested that following surgical management of a ruptured CCL in dogs, swimming resulted in greater ROM of the stifle and tarsal joints than did walking. This suggests that if ROM is a factor in the rate or extent of return to function in these dogs, then aquatic rehabilitation would likely result in a better overall outcome than walking alone.  相似文献

Case histories of 130 dogs and cats with humeral fractures were reviewed. The different types of fractures were classified. Most animals with proximal, shaft, and supracondylar fractures had excellent results. The poor prognosis associated with distal articular fractures was due most often to failure of the fixation device in the supracondylar area; best results were achieved with a plate on the caudal and medial surface of the distal humerus.  相似文献
