Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Soils from European High Mountain Areas   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in 70 soils distributed in mountain areas such as Montseny (300?C1,700 m), Pyrenees (1,500?C2,900 m), Alps (1,100?C2,500 m), and Tatras (1,400?C1,960 m). Average total PAH concentrations, excluding retene and perylene, were about 400 ng/g in the Pyrenees and 1,300?C1,600 ng/g in the other mountain ranges. No correlations between PAH concentrations and total organic carbon were observed. Retene was the major PAH in the Pyrenean soils of lower altitude. No altitudinal dependence was found between soil PAH concentrations and elevation for the whole dataset. However, in the Tatra soils a statistically significant correlation with altitude was observed involving higher concentrations at higher altitude. This correlation was due to the statistically significant altitudinal dependence of the more volatile PAHs. Another observed altitudinal trend concerned the benz[a]anthracene/(benz[a]anthracene + chrysene + triphenylene) and the benzo[a]pyrene/(benzo[a]pyrene + benzo[e]pyrene) ratios that exhibited a decrease in the more chemically labile compounds, benz[a]anthracene and benzo[a]pyrene, respectively, in the soils located at higher altitude. This observation is consistent with the expected higher photooxidation at higher mountain altitude.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the degree of PAH contamination and the association of PAHs with metals in urban soil samples from Sevilla (Spain). Fifteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons-PAHs (naphthalene, acenaphthene, fluorene, phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, pyrene, benzo[a]anthracene, chrysene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, benzo[a]pyrene, dibenzo[a,h]anthracene, benzo[g,h,i]perylene, indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene) and seven metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) have been evaluated in representative urban soil samples. Forty-one top soils (0–10 cm) under different land use (garden, roadside, riverbank and agricultural allotment) were selected. PAHs from soil samples were extracted by sonication using dichloromethane. The simultaneous quantification of 15 different PAH compounds were carried out by HPLC using multiple wavelength shift in the fluorescence detector. For qualitative analysis a photo diode-array detector was used. Metal (pseudo-total) analysis was carried out by digestion of the soils with aqua regia in microwave oven. The mean concentration of each PAH in urban soils of Sevilla showed a wide range, they are not considered highly contaminated. The results of the sum of 15 PAHs in Sevilla soils are in the range 89.5–4004.2 μg kg?1, but there seems not to be a correlation between the concentration of PAHs and the land use. Of the 15 PAHs examined, phenanthrene, fluoranthene and pyrene were present at the highest concentrations, being the sum of these PAHs about 40% of the total content. Although metal content were not especially high in most soils, there are significant hints of moderate pollution in some particular spots. Such spots are mainly related with some gardens within the historic quarters of the city. The associations among metals and PAHs content in the soil samples was checked by principal components analysis (PCA). The largest values both for ‘urban’ metals (Pb, Cu and Zn) and for PAHs were mainly found in sites close to the historic quarters of the city in which a heavy traffic of motor vehicles is suffered from years.  相似文献

Actual information on the level of accumulation of PAHs in soils, their inputs/outputs and fate is still unsatisfactory. The regional scale of data collection is important from practical point of view, since decisions regarding environment protection often require proper assessment of soil information aggregated on this level. The objective of the study was to define the regional levels of PAHs in soils and to examine the relationship with the parameters related to their inputs (emission factors) and to natural conditions (soil properties, geographical localisation). The territory of Poland, comprising 16 regions, was chosen as a model area representing the Central/East European countries. The concentrations of 16 PAH compounds were determined in 266 soil samples collected from 0 to 30-cm upper soil layer from agricultural lands. The data were supplemented with basic soil properties. The regional concentrations of Σ16PAHs were within the limits of 125–756 μg kg?1 (geometric means) and did not exceed the limit values specified in Polish regulations. They complied also with European soil screening values for intermediate or negligible risk. The key variable affecting the accumulation of PAHs in soils was the regional emission of those contaminants, which described soil concentrations of PAHs in at least 50%; the results suggest time-dependent (delayed) reaction of soil environment to the emission changes. The effect was sensitive to PAH compositions in soils and was most pronounced in the case of higher molecular weight compounds (≥4 rings) transported predominantly with atmospheric particles. The regression models, comprising actual regional emission data, did not indicated on the increasing risk of PAHs accumulation in soils. The evaluations based on the regional content of benzo(a)pyrene in soils implied significant discrepancies between Polish and other internationally accepted criteria in soil contamination. The natural factors (soil characteristics and climate) affected the regional PAH concentrations in very small extent.  相似文献

The research comprised of studying the effect composting sewage sludge with sawdust and vermicomposting with earthworm Eisenia fetida has on the degradation of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Raw rural sewage sludge prior composting was more contaminated with PAHs than urban sewage sludge, in both cases exceeding EU cutoff limits of 6 mg/kg established for land application. Dibenzo[a,h]anthracene (DBahAnt), acenaphtylene (Acy) and indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene (IPyr) were predominant in rural sewage sludge, whilst the urban sewage sludge contained the highest concentrations of benzo[b]fluoranthene (BbFl), benzo[k]fluoranthene (BkFl) and indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene (IPyr). Thirty days of composting with sawdust has caused a significant reduction of 16 PAHs on average from 26.07 to 4.01 mg/kg (84.6%). During vermicomposting, total PAH concentration decreased on average from 15.5 to 2.37 mg/kg (84.7%). Vermicomposting caused full degradation of hydrocarbons containing 2 and 6 rings and significant reduction of PAHs with 3 aromatic rings (94.4%) as well as with 5 aromatic rings (83.2%). The lowest rate of degradation (64.4%) was observed for hydrocarbons with 4 aromatic rings such as fluoranthene, benzo(a)anthracene, chrysene and pyrene. On the other hand, the highest level of degradation was determined for PAHs with 2 rings (100%), 3 rings (88%) and 6 aromatic rings in the molecule (86.9%) after composting with sawdust. Acenaphthene and pyrene were found to be the most resistant to biodegradation during both composting methods.  相似文献

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can enter the marine environment from a variety of anthropogenic sources. As some PAHs are known or suspected carcinogens and mutagens, their potential hazard to human health and the natural environment warrants investigation. This is the first reported study on the prevalence and concentration of PAHs in marine sediments from Singapore's coastal environment, and accompanies the report by Basheer et al. (2003) on the measurement of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in seawater. The concentration of 16 PAH, classified as USEPA priority pollutants were analysed in sediments from 22 sample stations located within the northeastern and southwestern regions of Singapore's marine waters. The total PAH concentration varied between 15.22 μg g-1 and 82.41 μg g-1 in the northeastern region and between 13.63 μg g-1 and 84.92 μg g-1in the southwestern region. The highest concentration of total PAH i.e. 84.92 μg g-1 was recorded at a site adjacent to a petrochemical refinery. Among the sixteen individual PAHs, chrysene, indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene and benzo[a]anthracene were most prevalent in the sediments. The relatively low kinetic/thermodynamic isomer ratios for PAHs suggest that PAHs of pyrogenic origin are predominant in Singapore's coastal environment. The distribution of higher molecular weight i.e. (4–5 ring) individual PAHs corresponded to mixture profiles typical of those originating from high temperature combustion processes subjected to photolytic degradation during long-range atmospheric transportation. A comparison of total PAH concentration data for sediments collected from Singapore relative to those reported for other countries indicates a moderate level of PAH contamination in Singapore's coastal marine sediments.  相似文献

The presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in five commercial liquid smoke flavorings, used in the European food industry, was studied. The samples were subjected to an alkaline treatment, extracted with cyclohexane, cleaned up by means of solid-phase extraction tubes, and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Three different procedures for the cleanup were tested. The results revealed the presence of 34 PAHs, some of them with methyl substituents. In all cases, the concentrations of compounds of low molecular weight were much higher than those of high molecular weight. Relationships between smoke flavoring compositions and PAH levels were also studied. Three of the samples contained high levels of both total and carcinogenic PAHs. Benzo[a]pyrene was also detected in these three samples, but its concentration did not exceed the 10 microg/kg level fixed by the FAO/WHO. Finally, a relation was found, first between the concentrations of total carcinogenic PAHs and benzo[a]pyrene and also between the concentrations of pyrene and benzo[a]pyrene. The latter ratio reveals that pyrene concentration could be very useful in predicting the level of benzo[a]pyrene and, consequently, in estimating the carcinogenicity arising from the presence of benzo[a]pyrene and other carcinogenic PAHs.  相似文献

Purpose

The objective of this research is to find out the spatial distribution of different traffic-related contaminants in urban topsoils across a highway (125,000 vehicles per day) in the city of Moscow, Russia.

Materials and methods

The topsoils (0–3 cm depth) were sampled 1, 6, 10, 18, and 50 m perpendicular to the roadbed in three replicates 10 m apart. We analyzed total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), heavy metals in total and phyto-available forms (HM; Cu, Zn, and Pb), and deicing salts (DS; Cl?). The TPH were extracted with carbon tetrachloride and detected by spectrometry and PAH were extracted with methylene chloride, separated by high-performance liquid chromatography, and determined by fluorescence detector. Total HM were extracted by microwave acid digestion with aqua regia and phyto-available forms were extracted by NH4OAc and determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The DS were analyzed using an ion liquid chromatograph with a conductometric detector.

Results and discussion

Heavy soil pollution was found within 1–6 m of the road. The TPH, B[a]P, and phyto-available HM concentrations exceeded permissible levels for Russia, while total HM and DS did not. The contaminant contents sharply decreased 10 m from the road. Within 10–50 m, they reached background levels, while PAH levels were elevated. We attribute this to the greater age of soils at 10–50 m than 1–6 m from the road. The different contaminant distribution patterns are attributed to their different transportation pathways: TPH, DS, and HM generally reach soils through road spray, splashes, melting snow moved from the road surface to roadsides, and aerosol sedimentation, whereas PAH are mainly transported as airborne particles and are thus able to reach more distant locations.

Conclusions

Traffic-related soil pollution creates ecotoxicological and human-health risks. Distribution patterns vary by type of soil contaminant. The influence of the road on soil contamination was greatest within 10 m from the roadbed for TPH, HM, and DS and within 50 m for PAH. The increased PAH concentration levels with increased distance from the road highlights the importance of PAH monitoring in roadside soils.

Can root exudate components influence the availability of pyrene in soil?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Purpose

Little information is currently available regarding the influence of different root exudate components (RECs) on the availability of persistent organic pollutants in the soil environment. In this study, we investigated the impacts of different RECs including organic acids, amino acids, and fructose on the availability of pyrene as a representative polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) in soils.

Materials and methods

Citric acid, oxalic acid, malic acid, serine, alanine, and fructose were used in the experiments as representative RECs. Pyrene-spiked soils (TypicPaleudalfs) with present RECs were incubated for 30 days, and the available fraction of pyrene was determined using n-butanol extraction procedure.

Results and discussion

The amount of n-butanol-extractable pyrene in soil increased with the addition of tested RECs and increased when REC concentrations are enhanced within the range of 0–21 g kg?1. The extractability of pyrene in soil with REC treatments and the enhancement ratio (r, %) of the extractable pyrene in soil by the addition of RECs after a 30-day incubation decreased in the following order: organic acids (oxalic acid ≥ citric acid > malic acid) > amino acid (alanine > serine) > fructose. This decrease was observed irrespective of soil sterilization, although the concentrations of extractable pyrene were lower in non-sterilized soils compared to sterilized soils. The concentrations of metal cations and dissolved organic matter (DOM) in solution increased when organic acids were added.

Conclusions

The tested RECs at concentrations of 0–21 g kg?1 clearly enhanced the availability of pyrene in soils, and larger amounts of RECs resulted in higher pyrene availabilities in the tested soils. Microbial biodegradation diminished the amount of available pyrene irrespective of the presence of RECs. The mechanism of REC-influenced availability of pyrene in soil may be related to the metal dissolution and release of DOM from soil solids. The results of this study will be useful in assessing PAH-related risks to human health and the environment and will be instructive in food safety and remediation strategies at contaminated sites.  相似文献

Pyrene is a dominant PAH in urban environments. It can combine with airborne particulates and accumulate on plant leaves. To investigate pyrene’s biodegradation potential, this study initially monitored the abundance of airborne and phyllosphere bacteria. The number of airborne pyrene-degrading bacteria ranged from 22 to 152 CFU m?3 air, and more bacteria were found in the proximity of the ornamental plant swath than along the roadside. Pyrene-degrading bacteria averaged 5 × 104 CFU g?1 on the leaves of all tested plant species and accounted for approximately 7% of the total population. Four pyrene-degrading bacteria were isolated from I. coccinea to use as model phyllosphere bacteria. To increase the bioavailability of pyrene, a lipopeptide biosurfactant was applied. Kocuria sp. IC3 showed the highest pyrene degradation in the medium containing biosurfactant. The removal of deposited pyrene at 30 μg g?1 leaf was monitored in a glass chamber containing I. coccinea twigs. After 14 days, leaves containing both Kocuria sp. IC3 and 0.1× CMC biosurfactant showed 100% pyrene removal with the most abundant bacteria. The system with biosurfactant alone also enhanced the activities of phyllosphere bacteria with 94% pyrene removal. Consequently, the bioremediation of deposited pyrene could be achieved by spraying biosurfactant on ornamental shrubs.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to gather information on the spatial and temporal variation of stream water total mercury concentrations ([THg]) and to test the hypothesis that stream water [THg] increases as stream pH decreases in the Shenandoah National Park (SNP). We based our hypothesis on studies in lakes that found mercury methylation increases with decreasing pH, and studies in streams that found total mercury and other trace metal concentrations increase with decreasing pH. Stream water was collected at baseflow in SNP in April, July, and October 2005 and February 2006. Contrary to our hypothesis, stream water [THg] decreased with decreasing pH and acid neutralizing capacity. In SNP, stream pH and acid neutralizing capacity are strongly influenced by bedrock geology. We found that bedrock also influences stream water [THg]. Streams on basaltic bedrock had higher [THg] (0.648 ng L?1?±?0.39) than streams on siliciclastic bedrock (0.301 ng L?1?±?0.10) and streams on granitic bedrock (0.522 ng L?1?±?0.06). The higher pH streams on basaltic bedrock had the highest [THg]. The variation in stream water [THg] occurred despite no known variation in wet deposition of mercury across the SNP. The findings of this study indicate that the SNP can be an important area for mercury research with significant variations in mercury concentrations across the park.  相似文献

Purpose

The choice and timing of microorganisms added to soils for bioremediation is affected by the dominant bioavailable contaminants in the soil. However, changes to the concentration of bioavailable PAHs in soil are not clear, especially when several PAHs coexist. This study investigated the effects of PAH concentration and chemical properties on desorption in meadow brown soil after a 1-year aging period, which could reflect changes of PAH bioavailability during bioremediation.

Materials and methods

Based on the percentage of different molecular weights in a field investigation, high-level contaminated soil (HCS) and low-level contaminated soil (LCS) were prepared by adding phenanthrene (PHE), pyrene (PYR) and benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) to uncontaminated meadow brown soil. The concentrations of HCS and LCS were 250 mg?kg?1 (PHE, PYR, and BaP: 100, 100, and 50 mg?kg?1) and 50 mg?kg?1 (PHE, PYR, and BaP: 20, 20, and 10 mg?kg?1) respectively. The soils were aged for 1 year, after which desorption was induced by means of a XAD-2 adsorption technique over a 96-h period.

Results and discussion

The range of the rapidly desorbing fraction (F rap) for PHE, PYR, and BaP in HCS and LCS was from 1.9 to 27.8 %. In HCS, desorption of PYR was most difficult, and the rate constant of very slow desorption (K vs) of PYR was 8 orders of magnitude lower than that of BaP, which had similar very slow desorbing fractions (49.8 and 50.5 %, respectively). However, in LCS, desorption of PYR was the easiest; the Kvs of PYR was 8–10 orders of magnitude higher than those of PHE and BaP. In HCS, the time scale for release of 50 % of the PAHs was ranked as BaP?>?PYR?>?PHE, while in LCS this was BaP?>?PHE?>?PYR.

Conclusions

The combined effect of PAH concentrations and properties should be taken into account during desorption. The desorption of PAH did not always decrease with increasing molecular weight, and the desorption of four-ring PAHs might be special. These results are useful for screening biodegrading microbes and determining when they should be added to soils based on the dominant contaminants present during different periods, thus improving the efficiency of soil bioremediation.  相似文献

Aim and Background  Little data are available on the levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the sediments of the Mediterranean Sea Coast of Egypt in general and the Alexandria coastal zone in particular. It was therefore deemed necessary to set up a monitoring programme to determine the current concentrations of PAHs in bottom sediments, and to identify any area where high concentrations of these potential hazardous contaminants were present in the Western Harbour of Alexandria. Methods  The composition, distribution and the source of PAHs in surficial sediments of the harbour were investigated. To document the spatial PAH input, surficial sediment samples from 23 locations throughout the harbour were analysed. as]Results and Discussion The total PAH load determined in the surficial sediment samples ranged from 8 to 131150 ng g1 dry wt, generally with most of the samples having total concentrations of PAHs greater than 5000 ng g1 dry weight. The highest concentration of total PAHs was recorded in sediments of the inner harbour. Ratio values of specific compounds such as phenanthrene to anthracene, fluoranthrene to pyrene, methyl-phen-anthrene to phenanthrene, methyl-dibenzothiophenes to dibenzothiophenes, alkylated to non-alkylated and high molecular weight to low molecular weight PAH, were calculated to evaluate the possible source of PAH contamination in the harbour sediments. Conclusions  Two main sources of PAH in the study area have been found: pyrolytic and petrogenic. Interferences of rather petrogenic and pyrolytic PAH contaminations were noticed for most samples. The dominant sources of PAH appear to be the combustion processes through run-off, industrial and sewage discharges, and atmospheric input. The concentrations of PAHs were generally above levels expected to cause adverse biological effects. Recommendations and outlook  Information from this study and any other relevant studies should be useful in designing future strategies for environmental protection and management of the harbour.  相似文献

Contents of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and their distribution pattern in soils with different contamination levels In order to study the PAH-contamination of soils in North Rhine Westfalia, soil samples were taken at different sites and analysed for six PAH. The sites were selected with regard to different forms of land use such as arable land and pastures in rural areas and gardens in urban areas and with regard to varying immission situations. The results are valued according to reference (RW) and test values (PW) of the Netherlands Guidelines for soil restoration. The reference values of these guidelines characterizing normal contents are regularly and in part distinctly exceeded for fluoranthene and benzo(a)pyrene at some sites (coking plant, alluvial meadow soils, allotment gardens, close to a highway). The check values which imply more exact investigations are only exceeded at the most contaminated site, a coking plant. The PAH patterns at the different sites investigated depend on the number and kind of PAH sources. PAH typical for motor vehicle emission (benzo(b)fluoranthene, benzo(g,h,i)perylene) are dominating in soils close to a highway, whereas at the cokery site fluoranthene can be found in higher concentrations than the other PAH. In alluvial river soils and in soils of allotment gardens the pattern is more uniform because of diffuse sources with decreasing contents in the order fluoranthene > benzo(a)anthracene > benzo(b) fluoranthene > benzo(g,h,i)perylene > benzo(a)pyrene > benzo(k)fluoranthene. As a guide substance for a first risk assessment benzo(a)pyrene is suitable, since its content shows a strong correlation to the sum of five other PAH. In order to characterize the background contamination of soils with PAH new reference values are proposed.  相似文献

Purpose

The optimization of benzo[a]pyrene extraction conditions by subcritical water extraction method from soils is the purpose of the research. The optimal conditions for benzo[a]pyrene recovery are 30-min extraction by water in a special steel cartridge at 250 °C and 100 atm.

Materials and methods

Studies were conducted on the soils of monitoring plots subjected to Novocherkassk Power Station emissions. Monitoring plots were established at different distances from the Novocherkassk Power Station (NPS; 1.0–20.0 km).

Results and discussion

It was shown that the use of water in subcritical state as a solvent for benzo[a]pyrene extraction from soil allows to avoid large volumes of organic solvents and to decrease the time of sample preparation. It is shown that the maximum benzo[a]pyrene maintenance was observed in soils of the monitoring plots located most close (to 5 km) to a pollution source in the area of the prevailing direction of a wind rose. Dynamics of pollutant accumulation in soils depend on number of Novocherkassk state district power station emissions.

Conclusions

The method of benzo[a]pyrene subcritical water extraction from soil was developed and approbated during long-term monitoring researches of technogenic polluted territories. The optimum conditions for benzo[a]pyrene extraction from soil have been determined: the soil is treating by subcritical water at 250 °C and 100 atm of pressure for 30 min. Trends in the accumulation of benzo[a]pyrene in soil zones of the thermal power plant influence have been researched over a 5-year period of monitoring observations by subcritical water extraction method. Benzo[a]pyrene accumulation in soils depends on the technogenic emissions to the atmosphere from Novocherkassk power station and on the soil physical and chemical properties.

To assess PAH contamination pastures, grass and soil samples have been collected from 10 m (d1), 50 m (d2), and 150 m (d3) perpendicular to a French highway (70,000 vehicles per day) and at a control site in a rural area away from nearby contaminating sources. Total PAH concentration ranges from 767 ng/g dry weight to 3989 ng/g dry weight, according to the matrix and the distance from the highway. Distance is not a significant factor for PAH deposition on grass, while in soil it has an effect between d1 and d2 or d3. The total PAH concentration in highway samples is 8 times higher than in control site samples for grass and 7 to 4 times higher for soil. Fluoranthene, pyrene, and phenanthrene are the major PAHs in grass samples at the control site and the highway, but the concentrations are about 5 times higher near the highway. In soil samples collected near the highway, the values of concentrations between all compounds are not statistically different. PAH deposition on grass is linked to the physicochemical properties of the compounds, which lead to a specific distribution of each molecule (according to their volatility and the number of aromatic rings) while no specific behavior is revealed in soil.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Field experiments were conducted during the 2017 and 2018 cropping seasons, to evaluate the effects of biochar (B) and poultry manure (PM) on soil physical and chemical properties, leaf nutrient concentrations, growth, mineral composition and corm and cormel yield of cocoyam. The experiment each year consisted of 4 × 2 factorial combinations of B (0, 10, 20 and 30 t ha?1) and PM (0 and 7.5 t ha?1). Results of the study indicated that in both years, the application of B and PM alone, and in combination, improved soil physical and chemical properties, leaf nutrient concentrations, growth, mineral composition and corm and cormel yield of cocoyam. There was a significant interaction effect of B and PM (B x PM) which was adduced to the ability of the B to increase PM-use efficiency and promote better use of the nutrients in the PM. It was found that combination of 30 t ha?1 B and 7.5 t ha?1 PM (B30+ PM7.5) gave the highest corm and cormel yield of cocoyam compared with other treatments. The combination of 30 t ha?1 B and 7.5 t ha?1 PM (B30+ PM7.5) exhibited the highest impact and is therefore recommended for soil sustainability and cocoyam productivity on sandy soil.  相似文献

PM2.5 and PAHs bound to PM2.5 were investigated in downtown Bologna, from January to June 2003, in order to determine the burden of the fine fraction in the aerosol of a typical urban environment of the Po Valley, a critical area in Northern Italy in terms of atmospheric pollution. The sampling campaign was divided into three parts: a winter sub-campaign, an intermediate campaign where PM2.5 and PM10 were simultaneously sampled and which identified PM2.5 as the major component of PM10, and a summer sub-campaign. Critical concentrations of both PM2.5 and PAHs were observed in winter time; for example, in January 2003 the mean value for the 24-h average PM2.5 concentration was 58 μg/m3, much higher than the annual arithmetic mean of 15 μg/m3 established by the US ambient air quality standard (NAAQS). Correspondingly, the mean value for benzo[a]pyrene (BAP) in PM2.5 was 1.79 ng/m3, again higher than the annual mean of 1 ng/m3, required by European regulations for BAP in PM10. In summer time the BAP concentration considerably decreases to 0.10 ng/m3 as the likely effect of photolysis and dilution on a higher boundary layer; PM2.5 decreases too, but the mean concentration (22 μg/m3) is still higher than the NAAQS value. Further analysis included TEM microscopy of collected particles and correlations between PM2.5, PAHs and gases (benzene, O3, CO, NO2, SO2). All these observations identified on-road mobile sources as the main source of emissions and, in general, of the poor air quality level in the city of Bologna.  相似文献

A simple, rapid, easily automated method is described for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in shellfish such as American lobster (Homarus americanus) and blue mussel (Mytilus edulis). PAHs are extracted from small amounts (1-8 g) of tissue by saponification in 1N ethanolic potassium hydroxide followed by partitioning into 2,2,4-trimethylpentane. This solution is evaporated just to dryness by rotary evaporation and the residue is dissolved in cyclohexane-dichloromethane (1 + 1) for gel permeation chromatography (GPC) on Bio-Beads SX-3. The GPC procedure is ideal as a screening method in the range 25-18 000 ng PAHs/g tissue. If individual PAH measurements are required, the appropriate GPC fraction is collected and PAHs are separated by reverse phase liquid chromatography (LC) with fluorometric detection. Individual PAHs at concentrations as low as 0.25-10 ng/g can be determined. Recoveries of added fluoranthene, pyrene, benz[a]anthracene, chrysene, benzo[e]pyrene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, benzo[a]pyrene, dibenz[a,h]anthracene, benzo[ghi]perylene, and indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene were quantitative, with relative standard deviations ranging from 0.0 to 16.9%.  相似文献

Purpose

Sediment contamination in US waterways is an expensive and complicated issue, and as acceptance of nontraditional sediment remediation strategies broadens, novel and efficient methods to assess and monitor the bioavailability of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in contaminated sediments will play an important role.

Materials and methods

In this project, solid phase microextraction (SPME) fibers inside perforated steel tubes were used as in situ passive samplers to measure polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations in sediment before and after treatment with activated carbon (AC). Two modes of waterjet amendment injection were used to apply the AC. In the first treatment, a single 2-min injection was shot into the center of a test vessel, and in the second treatment, multiple 7-s injections in a grid were placed in sediment.

Results and discussion

In the single injection, no treatment was observed 5 cm away from the injection, while at 2.5 cm, >90 % decrease of PAH pore water concentration was observed, indicating a similar bioavailability decrease. In the multiple injection experiment, >90 % PAH pore water level reductions were observed throughout the test vessel. Highly contaminated and less contaminated sediments were mixed with 0–5 % AC by weight to develop AC treatment curves. Over 99 % reduction in PAH pore water concentrations and bioavailability was observed in the less contaminated sediment at 3 % AC, while 99 % reduction was never reached even at 5 % AC addition in the highly contaminated sediment. Different treatment curves were observed for the different contaminated sediments. In situ equilibration times were 120, 215, and 250 h for phenanthrene, pyrene, and benzo(a)anthracene, respectively.

Conclusions

The results show that in situ SPME is a viable method to observe AC treatment and evaluate reductions in pore water concentrations and bioavailability.  相似文献

Atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in particulate matter (PM10) collected in a suburban area with industrial and vehicular emissions in the Metropolitan Area of Rio de Janeiro City (Brazil). A total of 22 samples were collected between March and August 2005 by means of a high volume PM10 sampler. The particulate matter contained in the filters was extracted ultrasonically with dichloromethane. The extracts were later analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometer (GC/MS). The individual concentrations of PAHs ranged between the detection limit and 0.386 ng m?3. The PAHs concentrations observed in this study were towards the lowest end of the range of values reported for other European locations and also lower than values obtained for South America. PAHs concentrations and molecular ratios showed that light cars seem to be the main contributors to PM10 emissions, but diesel vehicles are clearly minor emission sources and industrial contributions should not be disregarded until more data are obtained.  相似文献
