Two trials involving 21 primiparous sows were conducted to evaluate the effects of fat and triamcinolone additions to the diet of late-term, gravid sows on carbohydrate, protein and fat reserves in nursed and fasted neonatal pigs. Beginning 7 d prepartum, sows were fed daily 1.8 kg (6 Mcal metabolizable energy, ME) of a fortified, corn-soybean meal diet that was supplemented with 4 Mcal ME/sow in the form of starch, soybean oil or soybean oil plus 70 mg/sow of triamcinolone, a synthetic glucocorticoid. After parturition, the sows were fed daily 5 kg (15 Mcal ME) of a 14% protein, corn-soybean meal diet. The addition of soybean oil to the diet of sows during late gestation did not influence (P greater than .1) liver glycogen content, serum glucose levels or carcass protein and fat reserves in nursed or fasted pigs from birth to 6, 12, 24 or 48 h of age. The addition of triamcinolone to the sows' prepartum diet increased (P less than .1) fat deposition in the nursed pigs from birth to 48 h of age. Liver glycogen reached minimal levels by 24 h postpartum in both nursed and fasted pigs, regardless of the sows' prepartum treatment. Serum glucose levels were maintained at 80 to 130 mg/dl in the nursed pigs from birth to 48 h of age, but approached hypoglycemic levels (50 mg/dl) by 24 h in the fasted pigs. Nursed pigs deposited 28 g of body protein and 15 g of fat from birth to 48 h of age; whereas, fasted pigs mobilized only minimal quantities (3 g) of body protein and fat.  相似文献

Chlortetracycline hydrochloride was administered intra-arterially (11 mg/kg) and as an oral drench (33 mg/kg) to ten 21.0-31.5-kg pigs. Five of the pigs were fasted 18 h prior to dosing and five of the pigs were fed ad libitum prior to dosing. The mean volume of distribution determined by area-under-the-curve calculations for the fasted pigs (0.967 +/- 0.210 l/kg) was significantly less (P less than 0.05) than the mean volume of distribution for the fed pigs (1.39 +/- 0.31 l/kg). Mean total body clearance of the drug was also significantly less (P less than 0.05) in the fasted pigs (0.165 +/- 0.055 l/kg/h) as compared to the fed pigs (0.307 +/- 0.053 l/kg/h). The elimination constants (beta) were not found to be statistically different (P less than 0.05): 0.1811 +/- 0.0057 for the fasted pigs; 0.2260 +/- 0.0461 for the fed pigs. The bioavailability for both groups was similar; 19.12 +/- 8.3% for the fasted pigs and 17.88 +/- 5.3% for the fed pigs. In a second experiment three groups of six pigs which weighed 34.5-44.1 kg were fed a corn-soy diet ad libitum. The rations were fortified with chlortetracycline at 100, 400 or 1000 mg chlortetracycline hydrochloride/kg feed. Chlortetracycline concentrations were determined in plasma samples collected over a 6-day period. Plasma chlortetracycline concentrations reach a plateau within 24 h after initial access to the trial diets and were highly correlated with the dose of the drug consumed (r2 = 0.97).  相似文献

A trial was conducted with 60 steers (257 kg) to determine the influence of prefast feed intake on recovery from feed and water deprivation. For 3 d, steers were fed a 35% roughage diet at 1 (LI) or 1.75% (MI) of body weight or ad libitum (AL). Steers were then deprived of feed and water for 24 h, limit-fed and watered for 24 h, deprived of feed and water for 48 h and then allowed ad libitum feed and water consumption for 2 wk. A fourth group of control steers was fed at 1.75% of body weight during the alimentation period and was not fasted. Realimentation feed intake was positively related to prefast feed intake, with the order of realimentation feed intake being AL greater than MI greater than LI (P less than .05). During deprivation, rumen volume declined (P less than .05) in AL-fed steers, but was not affected in LI and MI steers. Blood hemoglobin and serum urea-N increased during deprivation in all fasted groups. Prefast serum cholesterol levels were inversely related to prefast energy intake. During deprivation, rumen fluid total volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentrations and propionate and butyrate molar proportions declined (P less than .05) and acetate, isobutyrate and valerate + isovalerate molar proportions increased (P less than .05). Results of this study indicate that an increased prefast feed intake will provide a greater reserve of energy, water and electrolytes to the steer during deprivation and result in a shorter postfast adaptation period.  相似文献

Controlled trials were conducted to determine if treatment with the benzimidazole compound, omeprazole, would prevent gastric ulceration associated with feed withdrawal. Pigs were fed ad libitum, fasted for 24 h, or fasted for 48 h, and within each of these 3 groups the effect of no medication (controls), of 20 mg or 40 mg of omeprazole was evaluated on the pH of gastric fluid and the presence or absence of lesions in the pars esophagea. Medication with 40 mg of omeprazole resulted in significantly higher gastric pH 24 h after treatment compared with untreated pigs or pigs medicated with 20 mg of omeprazole. Fasting for 24 h or for 48 h, resulted in more pigs developing ulcers (15 of 25) than pigs allowed free access to feed (1 out of 10) (P = 0.01). The results of this trial suggest that omeprazole was effective in preventing some, but not all, of the tissue damage in the pars esophagea related to feed withdrawal. In addition to hydrochloric acid, possibly other components, such as bile acids in the fluid gastric contents, are important in causing epithelial injury.  相似文献

Twelve young bulls and 12 steers were slaughtered and the carcasses were fabricated at 48 h postmortem. Top rounds, bottom rounds, and rib eyes were vacuum-packaged and stored at 0 degrees C until 21 d postmortem. After subprimal storage, steaks were removed from each cut and displayed under simulated retail conditions for 3 d. Consumer panelists (n = 110) showed little difference in buying preference for top round, bottom round, and rib eye steaks from steers vs bullocks. Also, consumer panelists could not detect color differences between steaks from steers and bullocks. Experienced panelists (n = 6) detected brighter (P less than .05) muscle color for top round and rib eye steaks from steers but detected no difference in muscle color of bottom round steaks from bullocks and steers. Generally, overall desirability scores favored steaks from steer carcasses. This was particularly true of rib eye steaks. Sex-class of carcass did not affect aerobic plate counts of top round, bottom round, or rib eye steaks either before or after 3 d of retail display. Muscle pH was lower for top round and rib eye steaks from steer carcasses; however, the magnitude of this difference was not large enough to affect retail display stability. Muscle pH of bottom round steaks was not affected by sex-class. Although experienced panelists could detect differences in visual appearance of beef retail cuts from steers and bullocks, consumer panelists did not show a clear purchase preference for steer vs bullock beef. These data suggest that beef retail cuts from bullocks are acceptable in visual appearance.  相似文献

In a pilot experiment, bullocks were given diet with a sodium monensinate supplement as the Rumensin preparation. The dose of the supplement was 125 mg per head/day and the medicated feed was given to the bullocks for 14 months. The daily weight gain of the tested bullocks increased by 3.85% and feed consumption decreased by 7.12%. The meat of the ten bullocks examined (m. longissimus dorsi) showed no statistically significant changes in the basic chemical composition as compared with the meat of ten control bullocks. In the tested group the content of hydroxyproline in meat decreased by 35.14% (from 0.12 to 0.08 g per 100 g of fresh tissue - p less than 0.05). The content of glycine decreased by 8.82% (from 3.63 to 3.31 g per 100 g of dry matter - P less than 0.01). The content of alanine decreased by 5.86% (from 5.12 to 4.82 g per 100 g of dry matter - P less than 0.05). As to essential amino acids, the content of valine in the meat of the tested bullocks increased by 4.76% (from 3.99 to 4.18 g per 100 g of dry matter - P less than 0.05). Sodium monensinate exerted a favourable influence on weight gains and nutrient conversion in the bullocks. It had no effect on the basic chemical composition and no marked influence on the content of amino acids, except hydroxyproline and, particularly, essential amino acids in the meat of the tested bullocks. A reduction in the content of hydroxyproline signalizes higher-value proteins.  相似文献

The relationship of serum cortisol to immunoglobulin absorption and gut closure in cesarean-derived neonatal lambs was evaluated in two trials. In trial 1, 21 lambs were obtained on d 136 to 138 of gestation, and in trial 2, 17 lambs were obtained on d 140 to 142 of gestation. At birth, lambs were assigned randomly to four treatments: 1) control (CO), 1 ml saline/kg BW every 4 h; 2) a drug to lower cortisol (LC), 5 mg metyrapone/kg BW every 4 h; 3) single-peak cortisol (SP), 10 IU ACTH/kg BW at 0 h; or 4) elevated cortisol (HC), 5 mg cortisol/kg BW every 4 h in trial 1 or 10 IU ACTH/kg BW every 4 h in trial 2. The treatment period was 24 and 48 h after delivery for trial 1 and 2, respectively. Lambs were fed pooled bovine colostrum every 4 h for 48 h after birth at 2 and 3.5% BW for trial 1 and 2, respectively. Compared with CO, HC increased serum cortisol, LC decreased serum cortisol and SP elevated serum cortisol concentrations through at least 8 h for both trials. In trial 1, HC and SP lambs exhibited elevated serum IgG, IgM and IgA concentrations by 20 h compared with CO. However, no difference in serum immunoglobulin concentration was observed at 36 h among CO, HC and SP. Conversely, LC had the lowest immunoglobulin concentration at 36 and 48 h, and precocious closure to immunoglobulin absorption had occurred by 20 h (P less than .05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Two trials were conducted to determine the influence of prefast and postfast dietary protein concentration on feed intake of steers (avg wt 250 kg) and the N and P metabolism of lambs (avg wt 50 kg). In Trial 1, crossbred steers were fed prefast diets containing 8, 12 or 16% crude protein (CP) for 14 d before being deprived of feed and water for 24 h. Next, they received feed for 24 h and again were deprived for 48 h. Finally, they were fed diets containing either 10 or 15% CP. Steers fed the 16% CP prefast diet that were switched to the 10% CP realimentation diet tended to have lower feed intakes than the other fasted groups. In Trial 2, 16 crossbred lambs housed in metabolism stalls were fed prefast and postfast diets containing either 11 or 16% CP both before and after a 72-h fast in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement. Nitrogen and P balance during realimentation tended to be affected by both the prefast and postfast dietary protein concentration. Results of this study indicate that CP content of the postfast diet alters repletion of nutrients lost during a feed and water deprivation period and can affect realimentation feed intake. However, the magnitude of this effect was dependent on protein content of the prefast diet.  相似文献

Although growth hormone (GH) is a primary stimulus for the synthesis of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), other factors such as nutritional status, insulin, and thyroid hormones are important modulators of circulating IGF-I levels. Thus, the effects of feed restriction and subsequent refeeding on plasma levels of IGF-I, GH, insulin, and thyroid hormones were studied in swine. Despite an elevation in plasma GH levels after 48 h of feed restriction, circulating IGF-I levels were decreased by 53% (P less than .05). Plasma triiodothyronine (T3) and insulin were lower (P less than .05) within 24 h after the feed restriction began, whereas thyroxine (T4) did not decrease until 48 h after removal of feed. Blood glucose levels remained unchanged throughout the experiment. Refeeding after the 48-h fast was associated with a decline (P less than .05) in circulating GH levels within 2 h, concomitant with an elevation (P less than .05) in plasma insulin and T3. Refeeding fasted pigs was associated with an increase (P less than .05) in plasma IGF-I; however, levels still had not returned to prefast concentrations within 24 h after refeeding. These data indicate that the GH-IGF-I axis becomes uncoupled during nutritional restriction in swine and that inadequate nutrient supply may limit the expression of the anabolic effects of GH.  相似文献

The influence of different pre- and post-treatment fasting periods on the plasma availability and disposition kinetics of albendazole (ABZ) and its sulphoxide metabolite (ABZSO) in cattle was investigated. The effect of fasting on the distribution of ABZ and ABZSO to different target tissues/fluids was also characterised. In Experiment I, 35 parasite-free Holstein calves were divided into seven groups according to the following feeding conditions and treated intraruminally with ABZ (10 mg/kg): control group (fed ad libitum), 24 h fasting either prior to (24 h pre-) or post (24 h post-) treatment, 24 h fasting with either 6 (6 h pre + 18 h post) or 12 h (12 h pre + 12 h post-) of feed restriction prior to treatment, 12 h fasting either prior to (12 h pre-) or post (12 h post) treatment. In Experiment II, calves from the same pool of animals were subjected to a 24 h fasting period prior to the same ABZ treatment and killed (two animals) at either 24, 36 or 48 h post-administration to obtain samples of abomasal/intestinal mucosa and fluid contents, bile and lungs. Plasma (Experiment I) and tissues/fluids (Experiment II) samples were analysed by HPLC. All the fasting periods investigated induced marked changes to the plasma availability and disposition kinetics of the ABZSO metabolite. Enhanced plasma availability between 37 and 118%, delayed peak concentrations and extended mean residence times for ABZSO were observed in fasted compared to fed calves. The changes in plasma kinetics, reflecting an altered quantitative gastrointestinal absorption, were reflected in increased availability of ABZ and ABZSO in the target tissues/fluids of fasted calves. The availabilities of ABZ and ABZSO in the gastrointestinal mucosa and fluids in fasted calves were markedly greater than in those fed ad libitum.  相似文献

Nine experiments on the effect upon bodyweight change of subcutaneous ear implantation of 36 mg zeranol in 605 Bos indicus crossbred cattle were conducted. Bullocks aged 3 to 4 years, steers aged 18 months and entire heifers aged 18 to 30 months were used over the period January to August, 1980. They were grazed on 6 commercial farms in tropical northern Australia. Seven of the experiments examined the results of single implantation after the initial 60 to 97 days. Growth rates of untreated cattle in the January to May period ranged from 0.43 kg/day over 97 days in heifers to 1.07 kg/day in bullocks. Bodyweight gains attributed to zeranol ranged from 1.8 kg (4.3% increase) over 97 days in heifers (NS) to 22.3 kg (28.9% increase) over 90 days in 18 month-old steers (P < 0.01). The significant bodyweight responses to zeranol treatment in all 5 experiments involving older 3-to 4-year-old bullocks have not been previously reported. Hot dressed weights of the zeranol-treated bullocks were significantly heavier than the untreated controls and dressing percentages were similar. Increases in bodyweight attributable to implantation with zeranol yielded 50 to 54% saleable carcase weight. Single-, repeat-, and non-implanted treatments were compared over 186 days from January to August. Both zeranol treatments significantly out-performed the controls (P < 0.05), and the repeat-implanted bullocks gained 9.2 kg more than the single-implanted bullocks (P<0.10) in spite of bodyweight tosses recorded in the 3 treatments over the final 105 days. In 2 experiments bullocks implanted once in January/February were weighed in August to monitor compensatory bodyweight changes after April/May. The cattle retained 72.4% and 92.6% of the original bodyweight advantage attributed to zeranol treatment, depending upon whether they lost or gained in bodyweight respectively during the April/May to August period. The commercial relevance of these results is discussed and suggestions are made for further work.  相似文献

Two trials were initiated to determine if slaframine (SF) can be used to alter fluid digesta flow and fermentation patterns in the rumen. In trial 1, a preliminary experiment, four Dorset X Barbados Black-belly ruminal-cannulated wethers (avg weight 41.6 8.7 kg) given ad libitum access to a pelleted concentrate/hay diet were injected intramuscularly with 0, 12, 24 or 48 micrograms SF/kg body weight (BW) in a 4 X 4 Latin-square design. Ruminal fluid dilution rate was determined using a single intraruminal infusion of polyethylene glycol (7 g), followed by seven hourly ruminal fluid samples. The administration of 48 micrograms SF/kg BW increased (P less than .10) ruminal volume and outflow by 27 and 25%, respectively, compared with controls. In trial 2, two Hereford and two Angus ruminal cannulated steers (avg weight 568 +/- 93 kg) were injected with 0, 6, 12 or 24 micrograms SF/kg BW at 8-h intervals over a 24-h period in a 4 X 4 Latin-square design. Steers were fed a concentrate diet at twice maintenance in 24 equal portions daily. Ruminal fluid dilution was measured using a single intraruminal infusion of cobalt-ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (20 g) administered 9 h after the initial SF injection. 1. Experiments were conducted to determine the differences in the energy utilisation of adult hens and cockerels of a layer (Rhode Island Red) and a broiler line (Cornish). The effect of 2 different precision-feeding methodologies (wet and dry-feeding) were also compared. Birds were fasted for 24 h, precision fed with 35 g dry or 33.5 g wet corn and fasted for a further 48 h period. Excreta were collected during this period. 2. Non of the parameters (method, sex, line) had a significant effect on the ME content of maize. However, a significant interaction was found between the sex of the birds and the methodology used. Females of both genetic lines utilised the energy content of maize more efficiently than males. The opposite was found when the wet precision-feeding method was used. 3. Weight loss and endogenous energy excretions (EEL) of birds were also effected by sex and genotype. Cockerels of both lines had significantly greater EEL than females. However, since hens lost less nitrogen, the nitrogen corrected EEL (EELn) was higher for the hens.  相似文献

Time course changes in plasma amino acid concentrations and the hepatic metabolism of serine and alanine were measured in six mature wethers during endotoxin-induced fever. In separate trials, the animals' responses to injections of saline and endotoxin were measured. The endotoxin was from Escherichia coli serotype 055:B5 and was injected intravenously (4 micrograms/kg body weight). Liver biopsies were obtained from the sheep at 6 h postinjection during both endotoxin and saline injection trials. Rectal temperature in the endotoxin treated animals was increased (P less than 0.05, above that in control animals from 4.25 h to 9 h postinjection, with a maximum rise of 2.43 degrees C at 5.5 h postinjection. Glucose concentration in jugular plasma decreased (P less than 0.05) by 3 h postinjection and remained depressed throughout the 24 h postinjection sampling period. Plasma serine concentration was decreased (P less than 0.05) by 3 h postinjection. Plasma alanine concentration was decreased significantly (P less than 0.05) only at 24 h postinjection. Endotoxin injection increased (P less than 0.05) hepatic oxidation of 14C-serine (162%) and the net incorporation of 14C-serine carbon into hepatic protein (173%) and glycogen (275%). The net incorporation of 14C-alanine carbon into hepatic protein (172%) and glycogen (323%) were increased (P less than 0.05) by endotoxin injection, while alanine oxidation was not affected by endotoxin treatment (P greater than 0.05). The increased hepatic use of serine may explain, in part, the dramatic decrease in plasma concentrations of this amino acid following endotoxin injection into sheep.  相似文献

The pharmacodynamics of carprofen and its pharmacokinetics in plasma and milk of healthy cows and cows with endotoxin-induced mastitis were studied after a single intravenous dose of 0.7 mg/kg body weight. Carprofen was administered to five clinically healthy cows and to the same cows 3 weeks later, 2 h after intramammary infusion of endotoxin. Mastitis developed in all endotoxin-infused quarters. The pharmacokinetic characteristics of carprofen in healthy cows were a small volume of distribution (0.09 l/kg), a relatively low systemic clearance (2.4 ml/h kg), and a long elimination half-life (30.7 h). In the mastitic cows, systemic clearance (1.4 ml/h kg) was significantly lower (P less than 0.01), and elimination half-life (43.0 h) was significantly longer (P less than 0.01) than in the normal animals. Concentrations of carprofen in milk from healthy quarters were below the limit of detection for the assay (0.022 micrograms/ml). In milk from mastitic quarters, concentrations of carprofen increased up to 0.164 micrograms/ml during the first 12 h after induction of mastitis, but were less than 0.022 micrograms/ml at 24 to 48 h. Compared with the untreated mastitic controls, carprofen treatment significantly reduced heart rate (P less than 0.01), rectal temperature (P less than 0.001), quarter swelling (P less than 0.01) and other parameters measured. Local and systemic adverse reactions to carprofen were not observed.  相似文献

Aims of this study with 43 equids naturally infected with Anoplocephala perfoliata in two dose titration trials were to document (i) the usefulness of a critical test with a 48 h treatment to necropsy period, (ii) efficacy of an oral paste of 0.5-2.0 mg praziquantel/kg body weight, and (iii) when after treatment would fecal egg counts provide best estimates of the tapeworm's prevalence in a herd. All feces passed by an equid after treatment and collected in successive 12 h batches were examined for tapeworms. At necropsy, tapeworms were identified as attached to the mucosa or unattached. Tapeworms were examined with a stereoscope and identified as normal or abnormal. Fecal samples were taken for egg counts at treatment and at 6 h intervals thereafter. In 32 of 36 treated equids, efficacy was 100% and mean efficacies for 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 mg praziquantel/kg body weight were 85.5, 99.7, 100 and 100%, respectively. Two equids treated with 0.5 mg praziquantel/kg body weight had low efficacies (5.4 and 38.1%) and normal tapeworms were found attached in the ventral colon and in one equid also in the dorsal colon. In seven untreated equids, tapeworms were primarily in the cecum with 21.3% detached. "Major fragments" or worms without a scolex but otherwise nearly a complete worm were 20.5% of the number of intact worms; they were not included in the efficacy analysis but should be. If the two equids with low efficacy were eliminated and if the number of all tapeworms and major fragments are combined less than 0.5% were in feces within 12 h of treatment, about 20% were in the 12-24 h period, 42% in 24-36h, 24% in 36-48 h and 13.5% in the equids at necropsy. One horse passed all its tapeworms in 24 h. This 48 h test when compared with a 24 h one with no examination of feces was more efficient in use of trial animals and reduced underestimation and overestimation of efficacy. However, a protocol similar to the 48 h test but with a 24 or 36 h post-treatment period should be investigated. The mean egg count peaked 18-24 h after treatment and samples taken at that time would provide the best estimate of prevalence. The Cornell-Wisconsin centrifugal flotation technique had a specificity of 100% and at 18 and 24 h its sensitivity was 94%. A brief discussion on critical and controlled tests for assessing efficacy of an anthelmintic for A. perfoliata is presented.  相似文献

During four 6-wk trials, 376 university-raised, crossbred feeder pigs were used to determine the effects of fasting (no feed or water) vs providing feed plus water or water alone at the simulated market and a 563-km transport on shrinkage and subsequent health and performance. Providing feed and water or water alone during a 12-h market simulation for Trials 1, 2 and 4 or a 24-h period for Trial 3 did not affect subsequent rate of gain (ADG) or feed efficiency (F/G) compared with pigs fasted during the market stay. However, overall shrinkage (market phase plus transportation) of pigs provided feed and water at the market was less (P less than .05) than for fasted pigs (4.0 vs 8.4% for Trials 1, 2 and 4; 4.5 vs 11.8% for Trial 3). Transporting the fasted or nonfasted feeder pig 563 k did not affect subsequent health or performance. Overall shrinkage of the fasted pigs that were transported 563 km vs those that were not transported during Trial 4 was not different (8.8 vs 9.1%; P greater than .05). In conclusion, one-owner feeder pigs can cope with the stress of fasting and transporting long distances without any extended detrimental effects on subsequent health and performance.  相似文献

Two trials of oral copper oxide needles for cattle are described. In one, a dose of 13.0 g copper oxide/100 kg liveweight in yearling bullocks was compared with parenteral copper at a total dose rate of 400 mg copper. In the second, three oral dose rates (3.5, 7.0 and 10.5 g copper oxide/100 kg liveweight) in calves were compared over two years with a total dose of 500 mg parenteral copper. In both trials liver copper values reached a peak at about six weeks after oral dosing and in the second trial the peak was dose related. Thereafter liver levels declined in all the oral treatment groups; normal levels of more than 30 mg/kg liver dry matter were maintained for 30 weeks in the first trial and for 40 to 47 weeks, depending on dose rate, in the second. In both trials repeated parenteral treatments were required to maintain liver levels within the normal range. The results support earlier findings that an adequate dose of copper oxide needles can maintain the copper status of cattle for periods of at least six months.  相似文献

A total of 292 sows, at three experimental stations (Auburn, Texas A&M, Texas Tech), was used to determine the effects of depriving sows of feed and(or) water before weaning on reproductive performance. The four treatments were arranged as a 2 X 2 factorial to evaluate two periods of feed deprivation (0 and 48 h) and two periods of water deprivation (0 and 24 h) before weaning. Sows were allowed to consume feed ad libitum during lactation, and were fed 1.8 kg/d during the weaning to breeding interval. Only sows nursing six or more pigs at weaning were used. Pigs were weaned at approximately 42 d at Auburn and 28 d at Texas A&M and Texas Tech. Treatment responses were similar at each station with no evidence of a station X treatment interaction for any of the traits (P greater than .10). During the 48-h treatment period, sows receiving feed and water ad libitum lost 1 kg compared with weight losses of 16 kg for sows deprived of feed for 48 h, 13 kg for sows deprived of water for 24 h, and 17 kg for sows deprived of feed for 48 h and water for 24 h. Weight losses for sows deprived of water only, may have partially resulted from reduced feed intake during the 24-h treatment period; however, feed intake during this period was not measured. Three trials were conducted to evaluate finishing diets containing 67% steam-flaked corn (SFC), steamed-whole corn (SWC) or whole corn (WC). In a feeding trial, steers fed SWC consumed more (P less than .05) dry matter per day (7.6 kg) than those fed WC (7.0 kg) or SFC (6.7 kg). Average daily gain was greater (P less than .05) for steers fed SFC (1.33 kg) and SWC (1.31 kg) than for those fed WC (1.25 kg), and feed efficiency was better (P less than .05) for steers fed SFC (5.06 kg dry matter/kg gain) than for those fed WC (5.62) and SWC (5.79). Carcass characteristics were not different among the three groups. In a digestion trial, method of corn processing did not affect digestibility of dry matter and crude protein. Starch digestibility was greater (P less than .05) for SFC (99.1%) than for SWC (93.8%) and WC (93.0%). There were no differences in nitrogen (N) intake or fecal N among the three diets; however, urinary N was less (P less than .05) for SWC (19 g/d) than for SFC (27 g/d) and WC (32 g/d), and N retention was higher (P less than .05) for the SWC diet. In vitro dry matter digestibility of the SFC diet was higher (P less than .05) than for WC at 4 and 8 h of incubation and higher (P less than .05) than the SWC diet at 8, 12 and 24 h of incubation.
