Objective – To compare continuous to intermittent feeding at delivering prescribed nutrition in hospitalized canine and feline patients. Design – Retrospective clinical study. Setting – University teaching hospital. Animals – Fifty‐four cats and 37 dogs. Measurements and Main Results – Twenty‐four‐hour periods of prescribed and delivered nutrition (kcal) were recorded, and the percentage of prescribed nutrition delivered (PPND) was calculated. If the patient received nasoenteric feeding for >1 day, then the average PPND per day was calculated. Frequency of gastrointestinal complications (vomiting, diarrhea, and regurgitation) was calculated per patient for each group. The PPND was not significantly different between patients fed continuously (99.0%) and patients fed intermittently (92.9%). Vomiting affected 29% of patients (26/91), diarrhea affected 26% of patients (24/91), and regurgitation affected 5% of patients (5/91). There was no significant difference in incidence of gastrointestinal complications between the patients fed continuously and the patients fed intermittently. There was a significantly higher incidence of diarrhea and regurgitation in dogs than in cats. Conclusions – PPND was not significantly different for continuous versus intermittent feeding via nasoenteric tubes. Frequencies of gastrointestinal complications were not significantly different between patients fed continuously and patients fed intermittently. Enterally fed dogs had a significantly higher frequency of regurgitation and diarrhea than enterally fed cats. Prospective studies are warranted to investigate causes for these potential inter‐species differences.  相似文献

Background: The putative role of the gut in amplification of systemic inflammation in acute pancreatitis is gaining credence, and intraluminal nutrition has been shown to decrease inflammation in experimental models of pancreatitis. Prepyloric feeding often is used in people with acute pancreatitis, but has not been evaluated in dogs. Hypothesis: Early intervention with enteral nutrition (EN) delivered proximal to the pylorus will be well tolerated in dogs with acute pancreatitis and provide justification for further larger trials. Animals: Ten dogs with severe acute pancreatitis in an open‐label, prospective pilot study. Methods: Dogs were treated with plasma transfusion and standard care, and then consecutively assigned to receive either EN via esophagostomy tube feeding or parenteral nutrition (PN). Outcome was used to determine optimal study size for future studies, and complications were compared between the 2 groups. Results: A significantly greater number of vomiting or regurgitating episodes occurred in dogs receiving PN. The dogs receiving EN did not demonstrate any noticeable postprandial pain. There were more catheter‐related complications in the PN group. There was no difference in outcome between the 2 treatments, and 43 dogs for each treatment would be required in future studies to determine a difference in outcome. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: Early EN delivered proximal to the pylorus is well tolerated in dogs with severe pancreatitis and resulted in fewer complications than PN. Prospective trials in a larger cohort are justified to fully establish the potential benefit of early EN, preferably compared with minimal enteral nutrition.  相似文献

Comparison of Continuous Versus Intermittent Enteral Feeding in Dogs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In humans, continuous intragastric feeding has been suggested to cause fewer gastrointestinal (GI) adverse effects, better weight gain and nitrogen balance, and less glucose intolerance than bolus feeding. The aim of this study was to compare the GI adverse effects and the metabolic and nutritional consequences of intragastric feeding of an enteral formula (Jevity; Ross Laboratories, Columbus, OH) intermittently or continuously to dogs. Using a cross-over study design, 10 healthy dogs were randomly assigned to be fed Jevity via gastrostomy tube either continuously (CFI or in 3 bolus meals/day (IF) for 10 days. The dogs were weighed daily. Serum chemistry and glucose tolerance tests (GlT were performed before and after each 10–day trial period. Fecal dry matter (FDM), serum osmolality (sOsm), and serum electrolytes (sElec) were determined 5 times during each 10 day trial period. Urine specific gravity was checked intermittently. Hydrogen breath tests were performed on days 0, 3, and 10. During the last 6 days of each trial period, nitrogen balance and digestibility of the Jevity were determined. There were no GI adverse effects noted on either protocol, and no significant ( P > .05) differences in body weights, serum chemistry results, sElec, sOsrn, GTT, hydrogen breath tests, digestibility trials, or nitrogen balance. There was a significant (P < .051 decrease in FDM over time for both protocols, and a significant (P < .051 increase in urine volume for IF compared with CF. In summary, there were no significant differences between treatments in weight maintenance, GI adverse effects, GTT, nitrogen balance, or feed digestibility. Changes in FDM suggest that the dogs received excess water. In conclusion, this study of healthy dogs provides no support for the preferential use of continuous intragastric feeding over bolus feeding. J Vet Intern Med 1996;10:133–138. The purpose of this study was to investigate clinical and metabolic effects of combined parenteral and oral nutrition compared with parenteral nutrition in young dogs with haemorrhagic gastroenteritis in a prospective clinical study. Dogs with acute gastroenteritis received either parenteral nutrition (group PN, n = 9) or combined parenteral and early enteral nutrition (group EN, n = 10). Infusions were compounded from amino acids, lipids, glucose and electrolyte/glucose solutions [149 g/l glucose, 20 g/l triglycerides, 40 g/l amino acids and 4009 kJ metabolizable energy/l (957 kcal ME/l)], and supplemented with potassium, phosphate and trace elements. Group EN received additionally a hydrolysed diet (74 kJ/kg BW(0.75) on day 2 and 148 kJ/kg BW(0.75) on days 3 and 4). Glucose, triglycerides, protein, albumin, fibrinogen, urea, creatinine, alkaline phosphatase, glutamate dehydrogenase and glutamate pyruvate transaminase were measured before and during the infusions, haematological traits only before the infusions. Statistics included two-factorial anova and subsequent t-test or Wilcoxon test (P < 0.05). All dogs of group EN survived compared with seven of nine patients in group PN. Most dogs in the EN group vomited within half an hour after introduction of oral feeding on day 2 but tolerance for food increased on days 3 and 4. The general health status and faecal and blood parameters of the surviving dogs were similar (P > 0.05) between the groups. In all dogs leucocytes increased during the treatment period, haematocrit and haemoglobin levels declined. Infusions increased blood glucose and triglycerides (P < 0.05); however, no adverse signs were observed. Early enteral nutrition was possible after a short period of adaptation, however, vomiting can be a severe problem. The evaluation of clinical benefits of early enteral nutrition in young dogs with haemorrhagic gastroenteritis requires further investigations.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: A clinical trial to determine whether continuous infusion administration technique was suitable for maintaining neuromuscular blockade with rocuronium bromide in dogs. ANIMALS: Twenty-two dogs, 10 males and 12 females, median age 2 years 4 months, median weight 32 kg undergoing elective surgical procedures under general anaesthesia: ASA classification I or II. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After induction of anaesthesia, neuromuscular function was evaluated using train-of-four (TOF) stimulation of the dorsal buccal branch of the facial nerve. A bolus dose of 0.5 mg kg(-1) rocuronium was administered intravenously and an infusion of 0.2 mg kg(-1) hour(-1) was started immediately. Neuromuscular blockade was assessed visually by counting the number of twitches observed during TOF stimulation repeated at 10-second intervals. RESULTS: The bolus dose of rocuronium abolished the response to TOF stimulation in 21 of the 22 dogs. The median onset time of neuromuscular blockade (complete loss of all four twitches) was 82 seconds (range 38-184 seconds). Median infusion duration was 76 minutes (range 20.3-146 minutes). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This protocol of rocuronium administration was considered to be effective in dogs. Constant infusion of rocuronium is easily applicable to clinical practice and further work is required on infusion titration.  相似文献

Background: Parenteral nutrition (PN) is increasingly used to support hospitalized dogs and cats. Published assessments of outcome are limited. Objective: Evaluate type and prevalence of complications and risk factors for death and complications in dogs and cats receiving PN. Animals: Three hundred and nineteen dogs and 112 cats that received PN at a teaching hospital between 2000 and 2008. Methods: Retrospective case review. Diagnosis, duration of PN administration, concurrent enteral feeding, death, and mechanical, septic, and metabolic complications were abstracted from medical records. Association of each parameter with complications and death was analyzed by binary logistic regression. Results: Pancreatitis was the most common diagnosis (109/319 dogs, 34/112 cats), and 137/319 dogs and 51/112 cats died. Dogs and cats received 113 ± 40% and 103 ± 32% of resting energy requirement, respectively. Mechanical (81/319 dogs, 16/112 cats) and septic (20/319 dogs, 6/112 cats) complications were not associated with death (P > .05). Hyperglycemia was the most common metabolic complication (96/158 dogs, 31/37 cats). Hypercreatininemia in dogs (8/79) was the only complication associated with death (P < .01). Chronic kidney disease in dogs, hepatic lipidosis in cats, and longer duration of inadequate caloric intake before PN in both species were negatively associated with survival (P < .05). Factors positively associated with survival included longer duration of PN administration in both species, enteral feeding in cats with any disease, and enteral feeding in dogs with respiratory disease (P < .05). Conclusions and Clinical Importance: PN can be effectively used to provide the energy requirements of most critically ill dogs and cats. Most complications accompanying PN administration do not affect survival.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: Peripheral parenteral nutrition is an option for short-term nutritional support in dogs which cannot be supported with enteral nutrition. The objective of this study was to examine the use of a three-in-one, 840 mOsmol/l peripheral parenteral nutrition product containing amino acids, lipids and glucose in separate compartments in dogs. METHODS: Nine dogs were administered the three-in-one product, and two dogs were administered the amino acid part of the product, via a peripheral vein. Dogs were monitored for mechanical and metabolic complications. RESULTS: Mechanical complications (apparent thrombus or thrombophlebitis) caused failure of infusion at a median of 36 hours. None of the dogs appeared to develop catheter-related sepsis. Using a 10-hour infusion period appeared to decrease the incidence of line failure. Mild and clinically non-significant hyperglycaemia was the only metabolic complication. In four of the dogs, serum folate, cobalamin and homocysteine concentrations were determined before and after peripheral parenteral nutrition administration. Oral and parenteral administration of methionine has been previously associated with lowered serum folate concentrations. Low serum folates and the subsequent hyperhomocysteinaemia have been associated with venous endothelial damage and venous thrombus in other species. Serum cobalamin also affects homocysteine metabolism. Median serum folate, cobalamin and homocysteine concentrations were not affected by the short-term administration of this three-in-one product. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Using the product for 24 hours/day may require catheter replacement due to line failure. Other than line failure, which may be improved by 10- to 12-hour infusion times, this product was found to be safe and practical for short-term peripheral parenteral nutrition in dogs.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a high dose of levomedetomidine had any pharmacologic activity or would antagonize the sedative and analgesic effects of dexmedetomidine in dogs. ANIMALS: 6 healthy Beagles. PROCEDURE: Each dog received the following treatments on separate days: a low dose of levomedetomidine (10 microg/kg), IV, as a bolus, followed by continuous infusion at a dose of 25 microg/kg/h; a high dose of levomedetomidine (80 microg/kg), IV, as a bolus, followed by continuous infusion at a dose of 200 microg/kg/h; and a dose of isotonic saline (0.9% NaCl) solution, IV, as a bolus, followed by continuous infusion (control). For all 3 treatments, the infusion was continued for 120 minutes. After 60 minutes, a single dose of dexmedetomidine (10 microg/kg) was administered IV. Sedation and analgesia were scored subjectively, and heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, arterial blood gas partial pressures, and rectal temperatures were monitored. RESULTS: Administration of levomedetomidine did not cause any behavioral changes. However, administration of the higher dose of levomedetomidine enhanced the bradycardia and reduced the sedative and analgesic effects associated with administration of dexmedetomidine. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that administration of dexmedetomidine alone may have some cardiovascular benefits over administration of medetomidine, which contains both dexmedetomidine and levomedetomidine. Further studies are needed to confirm the clinical importance of the effects of levomedetomidine in dogs.  相似文献

This research aimed to evaluate the effect of metoclopramide and ranitidine in the prevention of gastroesophageal reflux episodes during anesthetic procedures. Ninety healthy female dogs were submitted to elective ovariosalpingohisterectomy, randomly divided into three groups of 30 animals. The control group received only the anesthetic protocol. The metoclopramide group received an intravenous bolus of 1mg/kg, and continuous infusion (1 mg/kg/h intravenously) immediately after anesthetic induction. The ranitidine group received an intravenous bolus of 2 mg/kg, 6 h before anesthesia. Anesthesia (acepromazine, propofol and isofluorane) was standardized and the esophageal pH variations were recorded. Esophagoscopy was carried out after surgery. No difference (p<0.05) was verified in the reflux episodes between the groups. Seven animals presented reflux. Metoclopramide in bolus and continuous infusion, as well as ranitidine, 6 h before anesthesia, did not influence the reduction of the incidence of gastroesophageal reflux.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the hemodynamic consequences of the coadministration of a continuous rate infusion (CRI) of medetomidine with a fentanyl bolus in dogs. ANIMALS: 12 healthy sexually intact male dogs weighing 30.3 -/+ 4.2 kg (mean +/- SD). PROCEDURE: Dogs received either fentanyl alone (15.0 microg/kg, i.v. bolus) or the same dose of fentanyl during an 11-hour CRI of medetomidine (1.5 microg/kg/h, i.v.). Prior to drug administration, dogs were instrumented for measurement of cardiac output, left atrial pressure, and systemic arterial blood pressures. Additionally, blood samples were collected from the pulmonary artery and left atrium for blood gas analysis. RESULTS: Medetomidine infusion reduced the cardiac index, heart rate, and O2, delivery while increasing left atrial pressure. Subsequent fentanyl administration further decreased the cardiac index. The Pao2 was not significantly different between the 2 treatment groups; however, fentanyl transiently decreased Pao2 from baseline values in dogs receiving a CRI of medetomidine. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Because of the prolonged hemodynamic changes associated with the CRI of medetomidine, its safety should be further evaluated before being clinically implemented in dogs.  相似文献

The comparison of the histologic healing and bronchopleural fistula (BPF) complications encountered with three different BS closure techniques (manual suture, stapler and manual suture plus tissue flab) after pneumonectomy in dogs was investigated for a one-month period. The dogs were separated into two groups: group I (GI) (n = 9) and group II (GII) (n = 9). Right and left pneumonectomies were performed on the animals in GI and GII, respectively. Each group was further divided into three subgroups according to BS closure technique: subgroup I (SGI) (n = 3), manual suture; subgroup II (SGII) (n = 3), stapler; and subgroup III (SGIII) (n = 3), manual suture plus tissue flab. The dogs were sacrificed after one month of observation, and the bronchial stumps were removed for histological examination. The complications observed during a one-month period following pneumonectomy in nine dogs (n = 9) were: BPF (n = 5), peri-operative cardiac arrest (n = 1), post-operative respiratory arrest (n = 1), post-operative cardiac failure (n = 1) and cardio-pulmonary failure (n = 1). Histological healing was classified as complete or incomplete healing. Histological healing and BPF complications in the subgroups were analyzed statistically. There was no significant difference in histological healing between SGI and SGIII (p = 1.00; p > 0.05), nor between SGII and SGIII (p = 1.00; p > 0.05). Similarly, no significant difference was observed between the subgroups in terms of BPF (p = 0.945; p > 0.05). The results of the statistical analysis indicated that manual suture, stapler or manual suture plus tissue flab could be alternative methods for BS closure following pneumonectomy in dogs.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine if a constant rate local anesthetic delivery system is more effective than continuous intravenous (IV) morphine infusion for postoperative analgesia. ANIMALS: Twenty client-owned dogs undergoing total ear canal ablation. METHODS: Dogs were randomly assigned to the lidocaine group (LID) or the morphine group (MOR). The LID group received a constant rate infusion of lidocaine locally and a continuous IV infusion of saline, while the MOR group received a constant rate infusion of saline locally and a continuous IV infusion of morphine. The primary investigator evaluated each patient and determined a hospital behavior score, anesthesia recovery score, preoperative pain score, and serial postoperative pain and sedation scores over 38 hours. Pain and sedation observations were videotaped and scored by three additional evaluators. Evaluators were blinded to treatment assignments. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in age, weight, hospital behavior scores or anesthesia recovery scores. The primary investigator's pain scores were not significantly different, but sedation scores were significantly lower for the LID group. Sedation and pain scores by the video evaluators were not significantly different between groups. Kappa agreement between observers was poor, but better agreement was noted between sedation scores than pain scores. Drug-related complications were significantly lower in the LID group (n = 0) compared with the MOR group (n = 5). Wound complications were not significantly different (LID = 4, MOR = 4). Intravenous delivery complications occurred in 12 (60%) patients. Local delivery complications occurred in five (25%) dogs. Delivery complications were not significantly different between groups. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Continuous incisional lidocaine delivery was an equipotent and viable method of providing postoperative analgesia compared with IV morphine. Lidocaine delivery resulted in a trend toward lower pain scores, significantly lower sedation scores, and no dogs requiring analgesic rescue. Wound complications secondary to local infusion were minor and self-limiting. Drug-related complications occurred only in the MOR group.  相似文献

Total parenteral nutrition is the standard nutritional support of dogs when the enteral route is contraindicated, but it can be difficult because of cost, technical difficulties, and potential complications. Peripheral parenteral nutrition (PPN) may be a feasible option for short-term support in some cases. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of PPN on nitrogen balance (as an indicator of the effect on protein sparing), serum folate concentrations and serum insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF - I) concentrations in fasting dogs. The effect of PPN on these parameters has not previously been reported in dogs. Using a cross-over design, three healthy adult fasting dogs were randomly assigned to three treatments: 5 per cent amino acid solution, 5 per cent glucose solution, and a control electrolyte solution. The solutions were administered into a peripheral vein at 60 ml kg(-1)per day for 4 days. The amino acid infusion resulted in a positive nitrogen balance and the glucose infusion produced less nitrogen loss than the control. Amino acid, but not glucose or electrolyte infusions, decreased serum folate concentrations. Amino acid and glucose infusions resulted in higher serum IGF -I concentrations than electrolyte infusions, although the differences were small and IGF -I decreased in all cases. In conclusion, these findings suggest that PPN increases nitrogen balance in healthy dogs undergoing short-term fasting.  相似文献

In this study, we investigated the development of clinical disease and immune responses in the development of an experimental model of flea allergy dermatitis. Dogs were randomly divided into four treatment groups and were infested with fleas on two different feeding schedules (continuous and episodic). Group 1 consisted of four non-exposed dogs (negative controls) and Group 2 consisted of six dogs exposed to fleas continually. Groups 3 and 4 consisted of 14 dogs each that were exposed to fleas on an episodic schedule (two consecutive days every other week for 12 weeks). Group 4 also received intraperitoneal injections of a low dose of lectin (ricin) with immunomodulatory properties. The purpose of Group 4 was to investigate the effects of ricin on enhancing the development of clinical signs, flea antigen-specific IgE levels and altering the number of CD4+ and CD8+ T cell subsets in peripheral blood. Clinical signs developed in all flea exposed dogs, however, the dermatology lesion scores were less and shorter in duration for continuously exposed dogs compared to episodic exposed dogs, independent of ricin treatment. Lesion development was concentrated in the flea triangle and consisted principally of erythema, followed by alopecia, excoriation, papules, and crusts. CD4+ and CD8+ lymphocyte subsets or IgE levels were not altered by ricin treatment. Flea antigen-specific IgE values were highest in dogs exposed to fleas on a continuous basis compared to those episodically exposed. A greater percentage of clinical responder dogs with negative flea-specific IgE titers or negative intradermal test (IDT) were present in the episodic exposure groups than in the continuous exposure group. IgE titers corresponded slightly better with clinical responders than the IDT. The agreement between the IgE titers and IDT was good (weighted K = 0.67). Histopathology of skin samples were consistent with a Type I hypersensitivity. In conclusion, we were able to develop a model of flea allergy dermatitis by experimentally exposing dogs to fleas on an episodic and continuous feeding schedule. In this study, continuously exposed dogs did not develop immunotolerance, and ricin did not enhance the development of FAD.  相似文献

The periodontal health status was assessed in two groups of dogs which had received different levels of periodontal care over a two-year period. The dental group received regular dental scaling and polishing, and intermittent daily tooth brushing, while the control group received no periodontal care. All dogs developed gingivitis, and two (one from each group) showed evidence of incipient periodontitis. The dental group had a reduced gingivitis index (GI) compared with the control group only when they had received daily tooth brushing before the GI assessment. When the dogs had not had their teeth brushed for four weeks before the assessment, the GI was not significantly different to that in the control dogs. This suggests that continual periodontal care throughout life is of great importance and questions the benefits of intermittent oral care. The GI of the palatal and lingual surfaces in all dogs was significantly higher than the GI of the buccal surfaces. Thus, all tooth surfaces may need to be cleaned to achieve optimal periodontal health.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the cardiovascular responses of ephedrine and dopamine for the management of presurgical hypotension in anesthetized dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, clinical trial. ANIMALS: Twelve healthy client-owned dogs admitted for orthopedic surgery; six per group METHODS: Prior to surgery, 58 anesthetized dogs were monitored for hypotension [mean arterial pressure (MAP) <60 mmHg] that was not associated with bradycardia or excessive anesthetic depth. Ephedrine (0.2 mg kg(-1), IV) or dopamine (5 microg kg(-1) minute(-1), IV) was randomly assigned for treatment in 12 hypotensive dogs. Ten minutes after the first treatment (Tx(1)-10), ephedrine was repeated or the dopamine infusion rate was doubled. Cardiovascular assessments taken at baseline, Tx(1)-10, and 10 minutes following treatment adjustment (Tx(2)-10) were compared for differences within and between treatments (p < 0.05). RESULTS: Ephedrine increased cardiac index (CI), stroke volume index (SVI), oxygen delivery index (DO(2)I), and decreased total peripheral resistance (TPR) by Tx(1)-10, while MAP increased transiently (<5 minutes). The second ephedrine bolus produced no further improvement. Dopamine failed to produce significant changes at 5 microg kg(-1) minute(-1), while 10 microg kg(-1) minute(-1) increased MAP, CI, SVI significantly from baseline, and DO(2)I compared with Tx(1)-10. The improvement in CI, SVI, and DO(2)I was not significantly different between treatments at Tx(2)-10. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In anesthetized hypotensive dogs, ephedrine and dopamine improved cardiac output and oxygen delivery. However, the pressure-elevating effect of ephedrine is transient, while an infusion of dopamine at 10 microg kg(-1) minute(-1) improved MAP significantly by additionally maintaining TPR.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of 2 doses of metoclopramide on the incidence of gastroesophageal reflux (GER) in anesthetized dogs. ANIMALS: 52 healthy dogs undergoing elective orthopedic surgery. PROCEDURE: In this prospective clinical study, dogs were evaluated before and during orthopedic surgery. The anesthetic protocol used was standardized to include administration of acepromazine, morphine, thiopental, and isoflurane. Dogs were randomly selected to receive an infusion of saline (0.9% NaCl) solution, a low dose of metoclopramide, or a high dose of metoclopramide before and during anesthesia. Treatment groups were similar with respect to age, body weight, duration of food withholding before surgery, duration of surgery, and dose of thiopental administered. Dogs were positioned in dorsal recumbency during surgery. A sensor-tipped catheter was inserted to measure esophageal pH during anesthesia. We defined GER as a decrease in esophageal pH to < 4 or an increase to > 7.5 that lasted more than 30 seconds. RESULTS: The high dose of metoclopramide (bolus loading dose of 1.0 mg/kg, IV, followed by continuous infusion at a rate of 1.0 mg/kg/h) was associated with a 54% reduction in relative risk of developing GER. The low dose did not significantly affect the incidence of GER. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Administration of metoclopramide by bolus and constant rate infusion at doses much higher than commonly used will reduce the incidence but not totally prevent GER in anesthetized dogs undergoing orthopedic surgery.  相似文献

Administration of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) in the dog may cause gastric mucosal damage. Enteric-coated tablets protect the canine stomach during oral ASA medication. A therapeutic plasma salicylate concentration can be attained using enteric-coated ASA tablets at a dose rate of 25 mg/kg body wt, administered every 8 h. Six beagle dogs were given enteric-coated ASA tablets (500 mg) orally, in a 5-day cross-over experiment on two different feeding regimens: i.e. feeding once daily (Group I) or 8 hourly (Group II). Results demonstrate that feeding regimen strongly influences the plasma salicylate concentration pattern. Subtherapeutic mean plasma salicylate concentrations were found in both groups. In Group II the standard deviation (SD) of the mean plasma salicylate concentration was larger than that of Group I. The minimal plasma salicylate concentration never reached detectable levels in Group II. In both groups large numbers of tablets were vomited. Gastric evacuation of the ASA tablets is comparable to indigestible solid particles; their removal was dependent on the interdigestive gastric motility. It is concluded that large enteric-coated ASA tablets are not suitable for therapeutic use in small dogs.  相似文献

The arrhythmogenic dose of epinephrine (ADE) was determined in six dogs during halothane (1.35%) anesthesia before and after xylazine administration (1.1 mg/kg, i.v. bolus; 1.1 mg/kg/hr, i.v. infusion). The arrhythmogenic dose was determined by constant infusion of freshly mixed epinephrine (100 microgram/ml). The ADE was defined as the total dose of epinephrine which produced four or more intermittent or continuous premature ventricular contractions within a 15-sec period. Total dose was calculated as a function of infusion rate and time to arrhythmia. Following xylazine administration, ADE significantly decreased from 6.28 +/- 0.522 to 4.17 +/- 0.679 micrograms/kg. At the end of i.v. xylazine bolus administration, heart rate significantly decreased (115 +/- 4 to 99 +/- 4.9 b.p.m.), and mean arterial pressure significantly increased (83 +/- 4.0 to 122 +/- 3.4 mm Hg). Heart rate measured immediately prior to epinephrine-induced arrhythmia formation was significantly increased following xylazine administration (177 +/- 8 vs 78 +/- 3 b.p.m.). Mean arterial blood pressure was unchanged. Apparently, xylazine, a mixed alpha agonist, potentiated halothane-induced myocardial sensitization to ventricular arrhythmogenesis and was associated with a significant increase in heart rate, but not blood pressure, during subsequent epinephrine infusions.  相似文献

Background: The clinical efficacy of IV infusion of lidocaine for treatment of equine endotoxemia has not been studied. Hypothesis: Lidocaine infusion after exposure to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) will inhibit the inflammatory response and have inhibitory effects on the hemodynamic and cytokine responses to endotoxemia. Animals: Twelve horses. Methods: Two equal groups (n = 6): saline (GI) and lidocaine (GII). In all animals, endotoxin (500 ng/kg body weight [BW]) was injected intraperitoneally over 5 minutes. Twenty minutes later, animals received a bolus of GI or GII (1.3 mg/kg BW) over 5 minutes, followed by a 6‐hour continuous rate infusion of GI or GII (0.05 mg/kg BW/min). Treatment efficacy was judged from change in arterial blood pressure, peripheral blood and peritoneal fluid (PF) variables (total and differential cell counts, enzyme activities, and cytokine concentrations), and clinical scores (CS) for behavioral evidence of abdominal pain or discomfort during the study. Results: Compared with the control group, horses treated with lidocaine had significantly lower CS and serum and PF tumor necrosis factor‐α (TNF‐α) activity. At several time points in both groups, total and differential cell counts, glucose, total protein and fibrinogen concentrations, and alkaline phosphatase, creatine kinase, and TNF‐α activities were significantly different from baseline values both in peripheral blood and in PF. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Lidocaine significantly decreased severity of CS and inhibited TNF‐α activity in PF.  相似文献
