Nine juvenile mink with hind-limb paresis/paralysis from 2 Ontario farms were submitted for necropsy. Diagnostic tests revealed spinal compression and severe thoracic diskospondylitis with intralesional Gram-positive coccoid bacterial colonies. Streptococcus canis, Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis, and hemolytic Staphylococcus spp. were isolated from vertebral lesions.  相似文献

Cervical Intervertebral Disk Protrusion in a Horse   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A Hansen type ll intervertebral disk protrusion was diagnosed in an 18-year-old horse with signs of progressive ataxia and paresis. A soft tissue mass dorsal to the C6-C7 intervertebral disk space was identified at myelogram and found to be an intervertebral disk protrusion with enlarged dorsal annulus fibrosis at surgery. Surgical decompression was achieved using a ventral approach to the caudal cervical vertebrae, an approach limited in its application by the vertebral venous sinuses. Neurological signs remained unchanged for 3 days and then deteriorated. The horse was euthanized.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect that ventral intervertebral disk fenestration has on the sagittal range of motion about the C5-C6 intervertebral space. STUDY DESIGN: A repeated measures in vitro mechanical study of spinal range of motion under controlled loading conditions before and after fenestration. SAMPLE POPULATION: A total of 10 canine cervical vertebral specimens (C4-C7) collected from clinically normal animals within 12 hours of euthanasia. METHODS: Specimens were loaded as cantilever beams fixed at C7. Weights (1 to 5 kg) were progressively applied to C4 to produce flexion or extension in the sagittal plane. Radiographs were taken at each load, 3 times before and 3 times after fenestration of the C5-C6 disk. The positions of radiodense markers embedded in the vertebrae were used to calculate flexion and extension angles and range of motion. RESULTS: Range of motion (difference between flexion and extension) and flexion and extension angles (individually) significantly increased after fenestration (P < .0001). CONCLUSION: Ventral fenestration produces sagittal instability of the C5-C6 disk space. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In surgical fusion of caudal cervical intervertebral spaces in dogs, radiographically normal disks adjacent to the affected space are often fenestrated to facilitate distraction before surgical stabilization. This study shows that ventral fenestration produces instability of a caudal cervical intervertebral space in the model used. Such instability may contribute to the development of the secondary instability ("domino lesions") seen in some surgically treated dogs.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine outcome of and complications associated with prophylactic percutaneous laser disk ablation in dogs with thoracolumbar disk disease. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 277 dogs. PROCEDURE: Medical records of dogs with a history of thoracolumbar disk disease in which the 7 intervertebral disks from T10-11 through L3-4 were ablated with a holmium-yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser inserted through percutaneously placed needles were reviewed. Complications and episodes of a recurrence of neurologic signs (eg, paresis or paralysis) were recorded. Owners were contacted by telephone for follow-up information. RESULTS: Nine of 262 (3.4%) dogs for which follow-up information was available had a recurrence of paresis or paralysis. Follow-up time ranged from 1 to 85 months (mean, 15 months); signs recurred between 3 and 52 months (mean, 15.1 months) after laser disk ablation. Acute complications occurred in 5 dogs and included mild pneumothorax in 1 dog, an abscess at a needle insertion site in 1 dog, and proprioceptive deficits in 3 dogs, 1 of which required hemilaminectomy within 1 week because of progression and severity of neurologic signs. One dog developed diskospondylitis. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that prophylactic percutaneous laser disk ablation is associated with few complications and may reduce the risk of recurrence of signs of intervertebral disk disease in dogs.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in Polish farmed mink according to way of feeding as well as to confirm the role of toxoplasmosis in reproductive losses in mink farms. The serological examinations were carried out on 961 mink randomly selected from 12 Polish farms. Blood sera were examined for the presence of T. gondii antibodies with the use of the latex agglutination test. The examinations for the presence of T. gondii in organ tissues were performed on five neonatal mink kits with the use of immunofluorescence method. In total 133 (13.9%) out of 961 examined mink had T. gondii antibodies. In large farms the seropositivity was lower (2.9%), than in small farms (26.33%) (P < 0.001). Significant difference was found in seroprevalence according to way of feeding. In farms feeding fish, percentage of seropositivity was lower (2.2%), than in farms based on non-frozen slaughter offal (43.4%). Titres of T. gondii antibodies were usually lower than 120 IU/ml. Using the immunofluorescence method, T. gondii was detected in impression smears from liver and brain of two neonatal mink kits derived from one seropositive female.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare morphologic and morphometric features of the cervical vertebral column and spinal cord of Doberman Pinschers with and without clinical signs of cervical spondylomyelopathy (CSM; wobbler syndrome) detected via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). ANIMALS: 16 clinically normal and 16 CSM-affected Doberman Pinschers. PROCEDURES: For each dog, MRI of the cervical vertebral column (in neutral and traction positions) was performed. Morphologically, MRI abnormalities were classified according to a spinal cord compression scale. Foraminal stenosis and intervertebral disk degeneration and protrusion were also recorded. Morphometric measurements of the vertebral canal and spinal cord were obtained in sagittal and transverse MRI planes. RESULTS: 4 of 16 clinically normal and 15 of 16 CSM-affected dogs had spinal cord compression. Twelve clinically normal and all CSM-affected dogs had disk degeneration. Foraminal stenosis was detected in 11 clinically normal and 14 CSM-affected dogs. Vertebral canal and spinal cord areas were consistently smaller in CSM-affected dogs, compared with clinically normal dogs. In neutral and traction positions, the intervertebral disks of CSM-affected dogs were wider than those of clinically normal dogs but the amount of disk distraction was similar between groups. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The incidence of intervertebral disk degeneration and foraminal stenosis in clinically normal Doberman Pinschers was high; cervical spinal cord compression may be present without concurrent clinical signs. A combination of static factors (ie, a relatively stenotic vertebral canal and wider intervertebral disks) distinguished CSM-affected dogs from clinically normal dogs and appears to be a key feature in the pathogenesis of CSM.  相似文献

Hemorrhagic pneumonia is an acute and fatal disease of farmed mink caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The pathogenesis of this disease has not yet been resolved. Mink are the only animals known to be susceptible to acute, contagious, and fatal lung infections caused by P. aeruginosa. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between dose-response and season of infection and to clarify whether Danish mink are carriers of P. aeruginosa on their nasal mucosa during the season for hemorrhagic pneumonia. To elucidate the pathogenesis of the disease, an infectious dose-response trial was carried out on adult mink and mink kits, both in the season for hemorrhagic pneumonia (November) as well as out of season (July). It proved difficult to infect mink via the intra-nasal route. Only 4 out of 60 infected mink developed clinical disease and were euthanized, all of them in November, illustrating that predisposing factors in the mink itself and not infectious dose might be crucial for disease development. We were able to culture P. aeruginosa from the nasal cavity of the clinically healthy experimental mink 8 d after inoculation. This indicated that the mink can carry P. aeruginosa on their nasal mucosa without developing the disease. It was not possible, however, to culture P. aeruginosa from the nasal cavity of clinically healthy mink obtained from farms in November, which indicates that the organism is not a normal part of the nasal mucosal flora of mink.  相似文献

The distribution of diagnoses of mortality in mink submitted to the Danish Veterinary Laboratory (DVL) for diagnostic investigation in the calendar year 1997 was compared with the diagnoses of mortality in all dead mink collected at 4 selected farms (project farms) during the same period. A total of 1,015 submitted mink and 1,149 mink from the 4 project farms were subjected to post mortem investigation. The average size (breeding stock) of the project farms was larger than Danish farms on average. However, the distribution of colour types of the mink was comparable. The seasonal distribution of the material from project farms and that of the submissions were approximately the same. Differences in the distribution of diagnoses as well as recovered microorganisms were found, however, mainly related to the proportion of gastro-intestinal disorders and E. coli respectively. These proportions were negatively correlated. Overall the results showed that extrapolating diagnostic results of laboratory submissions to the population of farmed mink may be problematic, and more reliable methods for disease surveillance must be considered.  相似文献

The aim of the study was the assessment of the prognosis of intervertebral disk diseases on the basis of a large case load with the help of currently available therapy modalities. Medical records of 238 dogs presented within 2 years (2003-2004) with neurological deficits resulting from intervertebral disk disease and surgical treatment at the Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery of the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover were reviewed. 85% of the patients showed a good and 15% a poor long-term functional outcome. Both the presence of deep pain sensation and the weight of the dog were the only variables detected as having a significant impact on prognosis. The time needed to motor function improve depended on the degree of neurological deficits before surgery, and patients with a cervical lesion had a more rapid recovery than patients with a thoracolumbal disease. All other variables, including age, previous signs of intervertebral disk disease, preoperative steroid medication, a lower motor neuron involvement and durotomy did not significantly influence the outcome. Radiographic changes of the vertebral column such as spondylosis, spondylarthrosis, a narrowed disk space up to a fusion of the vertebral bodies mostly were found at the site of a removed intervertebral disk. In dogs with intervertebral disk disease evaluated in the current study a good result could be obtained after surgical decompression.  相似文献

Treatment recommendations differ for dogs with intervertebral disk extrusion vs. intervertebral disk protrusion. The aim of this retrospective, cross‐sectional study was to determine whether clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) variables could be used to predict a diagnosis of thoracolumbar intervertebral disk extrusion or protrusion in dogs. Dogs were included if they were large breed dogs, had an MRI study of the thoracolumbar or lumbar vertebral column, had undergone spinal surgery, and had the type of intervertebral disk herniation (intervertebral disk extrusion or protrusion) clearly stated in surgical reports. A veterinary neurologist unaware of surgical findings reviewed MRI studies and recorded number, location, degree of degeneration and morphology of intervertebral disks, presence of nuclear clefts, disk space narrowing, extent, localization and lateralization of herniated disk material, degree of spinal cord compression, intraparenchymal intensity changes, spondylosis deformans, spinal cord swelling, spinal cord atrophy, vertebral endplate changes, and presence of extradural hemorrhage. Ninety‐five dogs were included in the sample. Multivariable statistical models indicated that longer duration of clinical signs (P = 0.01), midline instead of lateralized disk herniation (P = 0.007), and partial instead of complete disk degeneration (P = 0.01) were associated with a diagnosis of intervertebral disk protrusion. The presence of a single intervertebral herniation (P = 0.023) and dispersed intervertebral disk material not confined to the disk space (P = 0.06) made a diagnosis of intervertebral disk extrusion more likely. Findings from this study identified one clinical and four MRI variables that could potentially facilitate differentiating intervertebral disk extrusions from protrusions in dogs.  相似文献

Cervical intervertebral disk disease is commonly treated surgically by ventral decompression through a ventral slot. Nine dogs with documented vertebral subluxation following surgical creation of a ventral slot are reported. The location of the subluxation was at the fourth cervical (C4) to fifth cervical (C5) intervertebral space in two dogs, C5 to sixth cervical (C6) intervertebral space in four dogs, and C6 to seventh cervical (C7) intervertebral space in three dogs. The ventral slot width to vertebral body width ratio ranged from 0.39 to 0.80, with the ratio being 0.50 or greater in seven of eight cases evaluated radiographically. Surgical reduction and stabilization were performed in seven of nine dogs.  相似文献

A central nervous system disease of mink occurred in three unrelated fur farms in Oregon in September, 1981. Only kits four to five months old were affected. Clinical signs consisted of posterior ataxia progressing to complete posterior paralysis with loss of motor control and sensation. Complete or partial recovery occurred in approximately 1.5 months in most mink. Microscopic lesions consisted of severe nonsuppurative meningoencephalitis and meningomyelitis with vacuolation of the white matter of the brain and spinal cord. Canine distemper virus infection and other recognized causes were ruled out on the basis of clinical signs, history, lesions, or laboratory findings. Experimental inoculations of mink with brain and spinal cord specimens from affected mink failed to reproduce the disease.  相似文献

Fluoroscopically guided percutaneous fine-needle aspiration of the intervertebral disk space was performed in 10 dogs with diskospondylitis. Positive bacterial cultures were obtained from 9 of 12 aspirated disk spaces, 1 of 6 blood cultures, and 6 of 10 urine cultures. Positive disk cultures were obtained from 2 dogs with negative blood and urine cultures and from 2 additional dogs with low numbers of Staphylococcus in urine cultures. Adverse clinical sequelae of the procedure were not noted. Percutaneous fine-needle aspiration of the intervertebral disk space is an alternative technique to surgical biopsy to obtain positive bacterial cultures from dogs with diskospondylitis.  相似文献

Intervertebral disk disease is common in humans and dogs but is rarely reported in horses. In this case report, we describe an 11-year-old American Saddlebred gelding with a 2-month history of pain and progressive neurological abnormalities (ataxia, conscious proprioceptive deficits involving all four limbs, toe dragging, and restricted neck flexion) while being worked as a Saddleseat show horse. Radiographs of the cervical spine showed a loss of the intervertebral disk space at C6–C7. At necropsy, nearly complete loss of the intervertebral disk at C6–C7 was seen, with marked eburnation and subchondral sclerosis of the adjacent vertebral endplates that were confirmed by histopathology. Many of the marrow spaces of the affected vertebral bodies were filled with cartilage and others contained variable amounts of fibrous connective tissue (myelofibrosis). To our knowledge, these pathological lesions are rarely reported in the literature and appear to represent a chronic, end-stage phase of cervical vertebral stenosis.  相似文献

The lumbar vertebral columns from 60 sows and 30 slaughter weight pigs were examined grossly for pathological changes. Asymmetry of lumbar articular facets and minor periarticular osteophytes were seen in the slaughter weight group. Degeneration of intervertebral discs or vertebral osteophytes were not present. In contrast, 38% of 60 sows had vertebral osteophytes and 40% had degeneration of intervertebral discs. Extensive ankylosing spondylosis was present in two sows. Other vertebral lesions observed in sows include asymmetry and arthrosis of articular facets, fissures and areas of cavitation in the annulus fibrosus and vertebral end plate, and vertebral osteomyelitis and/or vertebral fracture. Extravertebral skeletal lesions, some of which could be related to a clinical history of lameness or posterior paralysis, include sacroiliac arthrosis, pelvic deformity, polyarthritis, femoral osteomyelitis, sacroiliac dislocation and epiphyseolysis involving the femoral head or tuber ischii.  相似文献

AIM: To review cases in which Mycobacterium paratuberculosis was identified in farmed deer in New Zealand. METHODS: Case histories were reviewed where M. paratuberculosis was identified in deer by either culture or a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test using primers from IS900. RESULTS: Between 1986 and 2000, M. paratuberculosis was identified by bacterial culture and/or PCR in 619 farmed deer from 299 herds, representing approximately 6% of deer herds in New Zealand. Over 85% of cases were identified during the last 6 years. In 60% of the infected herds, only one infected animal was identified. The maximum number of cases identified in a single deer herd was 47, and these were identified over a period of 8 years. Only 36 (5.8%) cases came from clinically affected animals identified on farms by veterinarians. The majority (89.7%) of the 619 cases were identified from lesions in mesenteric lymph nodes, including the ileocaecal lymph nodes, identified at meat inspection as being macroscopically either typical or equivocal of bovine tuberculosis (M. bovis). While the overwhelming majority of lesions were identified in mesenteric lymph nodes, M. paratuberculosis was also identified in 27 lesions in lymph nodes of the head, especially the retropharyngeal lymph node. CONCLUSIONS: The figures presented underestimate the true prevalence of infection with M. paratuberculosis, especially since not all suspect cases were submitted for culture or PCR. However, they do show that M. paratuberculosis appears to be spreading in farmed deer in New Zealand and highlight the possibility that Johne's disease is emerging as a potential major problem affecting this species. Identification of the organism by bacterial culture or PCR is required in many cases to distinguish lesions in mesenteric lymph nodes and lymph nodes of the head caused by M. paratuberculosis from those caused by M. bovis and M. avium.

No screening method is currently available to differentiate dogs with and without cervical spondylomyelopathy. Intravertebral and intervertebral ratios are used in horses and can predict cervical vertebral malformation. Intervertebral ratios could be a useful screening method for canine cervical spondylomyelopathy. Our purpose was to compare cervical intervertebral and intravertebral ratios in normal vs. affected Doberman pinschers. Forty dogs were studied, 27 affected and 13 normal. Cervical radiographs were obtained in all dogs. The minimum intra- and intervertebral sagittal diameter ratios were established for each cervical vertebrae and disc space from C(2) to C(7) . Comparisons were made between groups and specific vertebral body and disc levels. The effect of gender, age, and method of measurement (analog or digital radiographs) was also studied. There was no difference in either the intervertebral or intravertebral ratio between normal vs. affected dogs. The ratios decreased progressively along the cervical spine, being smallest at C(6) -C(7) and C(7) , respectively. Age, gender, and method of measurement had a significant influence on both inter- and intravertebral ratios, with smaller ratios seen as dogs aged and in male dogs. Based on our results, inter- or intravertebral ratios have no value to distinguish between clinically normal Doberman pinschers and Doberman pinschers with cervical spondylomyelopathy.  相似文献

Intervertebral disk extrusion is rarely reported in the cat. In this case, the clinical, radiologic, and magnetic resonance imaging findings of an acute intramedullary intervertebral disk extrusion in a 5-year-old domestic shorthaired cat are described. Radiographically, there was mineralized disk material within the vertebral canal. On magnetic resonance images, the disk material was found to be within the spinal cord. A linear disk trail extending from the disk space into the spinal cord may be specific for intramedullary disk extrusion.  相似文献

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 7-year-old domestic shorthair cat with a 2-month history of decreased appetite and weight loss was examined because of paraparesis of 1 week's duration that had progressed to paraplegia 3 days earlier. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Neurologic examination revealed normo- to hyperreflexia and absence of deep pain sensation in the hind limbs and thoracolumbar spinal hyperesthesia. Neuro-anatomically, the lesion was located within the T3 through L3 spinal cord segments. Biochemical analysis and cytologic examination of CSF revealed no abnormalities. Radiography revealed narrowing of the T11-12 intervertebral disk space and intervertebral foramen suggestive of intervertebral disk disease. Myelography revealed an extradural mass centered at the T12-13 intervertebral disk space with extension over the dorsal surfaces of T11-13 and L1 vertebral bodies. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: A right-sided hemilaminectomy was performed over the T11-12, T12-13, and T13-L1 intervertebral disk spaces, and a space-occupying mass was revealed. Aerobic bacterial culture of samples of the mass yielded growth of a yeast organism after a 10-day incubation period; histologically, Histoplasma capsulatum was identified. Treatment with itraconazole was initiated. Nineteen days after surgery, superficial pain sensation and voluntary motor function were evident in both hind limbs. After approximately 3.5 months, the cat was ambulatory with sling assistance and had regained some ability to urinate voluntarily. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In cats with myelopathies that have no overt evidence of fungal dissemination, differential diagnoses should include CNS histoplasmosis. Although prognosis associated with fungal infections of the CNS is generally guarded, treatment is warranted and may have a positive outcome.  相似文献
