1. The effects of changes in technical efficiency on the increase of broiler production are presented for the period 1994–2013 based on the panel data from seven farms located in southern and central Poland. A total of 766 cycles were analysed.

2. The Cobb–Douglas production function was used to assess the changes of output elasticities as well as technical changes in broiler production, for 5-year sub-periods separately.

3. Technical indices of broiler production significantly improved between years 1994–2013: feed conversion ratio decreased from 2.50 kg/kg to 1.78 kg/kg, mortality rate from 8.8% to 4.0% and daily weight gain increased from 37.1 g/d to 58.7 g/d, respectively.

4. Before accession to the EU, there was a substantial increase of fixed capital connected with modernisation of buildings and equipment. In the period 1994–2013, inputs of fixed capital per kilogram of livestock increased by 72% and at the same time the input of labour decreased by 56%.

5. Technical changes in years 1994–1998 contributed to a rapid production increase at a rate of 4.6% annually and only by up to 0.7% annually during 2009–2013. The slowdown of production rate increase after 2009 was partially caused by decreasing the stocking density.  相似文献

Reducing methane emission from ruminant animals has implications not only for global environmental protection but also for efficient animal production. Tea saponins (TS) extracted from seeds, leaves or roots of tea plant are pentacyclic triterpenes. They have a lasting antiprotozoal effect, but little effect on the methanogen population in sheep. There was no significant correlation between the protozoa counts and methanogens. The TS decreased methanogen activity. It seems that TS influenced the activity of the methanogens indirectly via the depressed ciliate protozoal population. The TS addition decreased fungal population in the medium containing rumen liquor in in vitro fermentation, but no such effect was observed in the rumen liquor of sheep fed TS. Tea saponins had a minor effect on the pattern of rumen fermentation and hence on nutrient digestion. When added at 3 g/day in diets, TS could improve daily weight gain and feed efficiency in goats. No positive associative effect existed between TS and disodium fumarate or soybean oil on methane suppression. Inclusion of TS in diets may be an effective way for improving feed efficiency in ruminants.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of laying hen diets supplemented with δ-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and vitamin C (VC) on productive performance, iron status and egg quality. A total of 252 Hy-line brown commercial laying hens were fed two levels of VC (0 and 500 mg/kg) and three levels of ALA (0, 5 and 10 mg/kg) in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement from 57 to 63 weeks of age. Each treatment contained seven replicates with six hens in each replicate. Supplementation of the diet with both ALA and VC resulted in a significant increase in egg production during 4-6 weeks (p < 0.05). The haematocrit (HCT), total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), white blood cell (WBC), total protein and albumin concentrations were not affected by the dietary treatments. However, ALA and interactive effect of ALA and VC were observed to increase the RBC, haemoglobin and serum iron concentrations (p < 0.05). In addition, inclusion of both ALA and VC increased blood lymphocyte percentage in relation to hens not supplemented with ALA (p < 0.05). Moreover, single effect of ALA or VC improved (p < 0.05) the yolk colour unit and albumin height from 3 to 6 weeks. The egg shell colour was increased (p < 0.05) by the effect of ALA. The addition of VC also led to an increase (p < 0.05) of the Haugh unit at the end of the experiment. However, neither ALA, nor VC exerted an effect on egg weight, egg shell breaking strength or egg shell thickness. The results demonstrate that dietary ALA and VC supplementation can improve the iron status and egg quality of laying hens.  相似文献

The problem of parasitism in cattle in New Zealand has been largely neglected, except in acute disease outbreaks. Losses, apparently due to chronic or subclinical parasitic gastro-enteritis, have been either undiagnosed or ignored, or the measures required to prevent these losses have been considered uneconomic or impractical. This latter view can perhaps be attributed to the low efficacy of anthelmintics previously available. Background: Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (SE), as a major cause of foodborn illness, infects humans mainly through the egg. However, the symptom of laying hens usually is not typical and hard to diagnosis. In the present study, it is studied that the influences of SE infection on layers' performance, egg quality and blood biochemical indicators. It will help us to improve the strategy to control SE infection in commercial layers. One hundred layers at 20 wk of age were divided into 2 groups, 60 hens for experiment and others for control. The experiment group was fed with the dosage of 108 CFU SE per hen. The specific PCR was used to detect the deposition of SE. On the 8 d after SE infection, 10 hens from the control group and 30 hens from the experimenta group were slaughtered to detect the SE colonization. The production performance, egg quality and blood biochemical indices were also analyzed. Results: The results showed that the colonization rate of SE was highest in caecum contents (55.17%) and lowest in vagina (17.24%). For the eggs the detection rate of SE was highest on the eggshell (80.00%) and lowest in yolk (18.81%). SE infection had no significant influence on production performance and egg qualities (P 〉 0.05). The difference of laying rate between the experimental and control groups was less than 0.30%, and both were approximately equal to 82.00%. The blood analysis showed that the aspartic aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) of experimental group was significantly higher than those of control group (P 〈 0.05). For experimental and control groups AST values were 236.22 U/I and 211.84 U/I respectively, and ALT values were 32.19 U/I and 24.55 U/I. All of coefficients were less than 20%. The colonization of SE in organs increases the enzyme activities of AST and ALT in blood. Conclusions: SE in feed could invade the oviduct and infect the forming eggs.   1. The present study was conducted to evaluate the role of extruded flaxseed (EFS) and α-tocopherol acetate (ATA) for the enhancement of polyunsaturated fatty acids ratio (PUFA) over saturated fatty acids (SFA) in broiler meat as a source of healthier meat.

  2. A total of 96 one-d-old Cobb 550 broilers were randomly divided into 8 treatments with three replicates having 4 birds in each. EFS (extruded at 155°C) at 100, 150 and 200 g/kg alone and in combination with ATA at 200 mg/kg were supplemented through normal feed from the third week onward.

  3. During the 6-week growth period, body weight gain (BWG), feed intake (FI), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and mortality were recorded. At slaughter, weight of liver, heart and kidney and fat content in breast and leg meat were measured. Fatty acid profiles in breast and leg meat were developed to estimate the PUFA to SFA ratio.

  4. The results revealed that FI and FCR changed significantly in all groups and BWG increased in all the supplemented groups. The weight of liver, kidney and heart increased more in the supplemented group containing the maximum level of EFS with ATA compared with single supplementation of EFS.

  5. The fat content in breast and leg meat decreased as the inclusion level of EFS increased. The level was low in leg meat compared with breast meat. Mortality decreased in all supplemented groups.

  6. The PUFA to SFA ratio was significantly higher in leg meat (3.23) compared with breast meat (1.81) and the study therefore indicates that ATA and EFS supplementation could be used to improve the PUFA to SFA ratio in broiler meat.

Background

Salmonella contaminated animal feed is a major source for introducing Salmonella into the animal derived food chain. Because soybeans frequently are contaminated with Salmonella, soybean meal used as animal feed material, a by-product of a “crushing plant” which produces oil from soybeans, can be important source of Salmonella in the animal feed.We report the successful control of Salmonella from 1994 to 2012 in a Norwegian crushing plant producing soybean meal from imported soy beans. The results are based on an officially supervised HACCP based program including annual testing of around 4000 samples.

Results

During the 19-year period, 34% of samples collected during unloading of ships delivering soybeans yielded Salmonella; the proportion of samples from ships that yielded Salmonella varied from 12-62% each year. Dust samples from all shiploads from South America yielded Salmonella. In total 94 serovars of Salmonella were isolated, including nine (90%) of the EU 2012 top ten serovars isolated from clinical cases of salmonellosis in humans, including major animal pathogenic serovars like Spp. Typhimurium and Enteritidis.The effectiveness of the HACCP based control was indicated by a low prevalence of Salmonella contamination in the clean area of the plant, which is considered to be the main reason for the successful prevention of Salmonella in the end product. Despite extensive testing, no sample from the finished soybean meal product was found to be Salmonella contaminated.

Conclusions

This study shows that a HAACP-based control program in a soybean crushing plant can produce Salmonella free soybean meal despite frequent Salmonella contamination of raw soybeans. That approach is suggested as an effective way to minimize the risk of Salmonella exposure of the animal feed mills and contamination of the subsequent animal feed chain.  相似文献

A study was conducted to characterize steroidogenesis in small ovarian follicles (1–10 mm in diameter) of the hen. The aims of our study were: 1) to determine basal estradiol-17β (E2) production by different sizes of small follicles; 2) to determine the ability of intact small follicles to utilize exogenous substrates for testosterone (T) and E2 production; and 3) to investigate the preferred steroidogenic pathway in small follicles. Small follicles which had not entered the hierarchy were isolated from ovaries obtained 2 hr after oviposition and divided into three groups: small white follicles (SWF; 1–2 mm in diameter), large white follicles (LWF; 2–4 mm in diameter), and small yellow follicles (SYF; 5–10 mm in diameter). Yolk and granulosa cells were removed from LWFs and SYFs and the remaining theca layer was called a follicle shell. Intact follicles or follicle shells (4/4 ml/tube) were incubated in avian Ringer's buffer supplemented with 10 mM HEPES and 0.1% BSA at 37°C for 3 hr with various treatments. Testosterone and E2 were measured in the medium. The SYFs and their corresponding follicle shells produced the greatest amount of E2 when E2 production was expressed per follicle. Addition of 2 mM 8-Br-cAMP to the incubation medium stimulated E2 production by all sizes of follicles and follicle shells. However, follicle shells produced lower basal- and 8-Br-cAMP-stimulated E2 secretion compared to corresponding intact follicles. There was no significant difference in E2 production in response to various concentrations of 25-hydroxycholesterol (25-OH-CHOL; 0–100 μM) by intact follicles and follicle shells. On the contrary, intact follicles and follicle shells produced T and E2 in a dose-dependent manner in response to increasing concentrations (0–100 μM) of pregnenolone (P5). Intact follicles also used progesterone (P4) and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) as substrates for T and E2 production. DHEA was the preferred substrate for steroid production compared to P4. In summary, we found that: 1) steroidogenesis in small follicles is regulated by a cAMP-dependent protein kinase A second messenger system; 2) adequate amounts of endogenous cholesterol are available for steroidogenesis; and 3) both Δ5 and Δ4 pathways are functional in small follicles and the Δ5 pathway may be the preferred steroidogenic pathway. pathway.  相似文献

A fence‐line contrast study compared erosion levels, herbage production and grass species diversity in Umfolozi Game Reserve (UGR) and adjacent KwaZulu (KWZ). There was no significant difference in soil loss or A‐horizon depths measured in KWZ and UGR, but there were significant differences in both parameters when measurements from upper, mid and lower slope sites were compared. Similarly, there was no significant difference between herbage accumulated in KWZ and UGR in the absence of grazing, but there was a significant difference between the upper, mid and lower slope plots. There was also no significant difference between grass species richness measured on plots in KWZ and UGR, but there was a highly significant difference when the grass species richness was compared between upper, mid and lower slopes. The major conclusion drawn from these results was that differences in the topographical position of the plots, rather than differences in land‐use practices, explained the greater amount of variability in the data.  相似文献

Virus-like particles (VLPs) composed of the truncated capsid protein of swine hepatitis E virus (HEV) were developed and immune responses of mice immunized with the VLPs were evaluated. IgG titers specific for the capsid protein of swine HEV were significantly higher for all groups of mice immunized with the VLPs than those of the negative control mice. Splenocytes from mice immunized with the VLPs also produced significantly greater quantities of interferon (IFN)-γ than interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-10. These newly developed swine HEV VLPs have the capacity to induce antigen-specific antibody and IFN-γ production in immunized mice.  相似文献

The effects of different Temperature Humidity Index (THI) values in cold, hot and El Ni?o (EN) climates on superovulation and embryo production were analysed on Holstein Friesian donor cows. There were significant differences in the THI among the three climates. The average temperature in the EN period was 6 degrees C higher than in the summer period of the previous 30 years. The number of corpora lutea (CL) and embryos were log- and back-transformed, Kolmogorov-Smirnoff test was used for normality and Lilliefors test was applied for significance. In the cold season THI was 70.74 +/- 1.35 and the average number of CL was 9.84 +/- 4.37. In the hot season the THI was 73.99 +/- 0.72 and the average number of CL was 9.70 +/- 4.49. When the THI, in the EN period, increased up to 79.74 +/- 4.01, the superovulation response was significantly (P < 0.01) reduced (average number of CL = 5.22 +/- 2.53). The embryo production result showed a similar tendency. In the hot period the average number of embryos obtained was 5.87 +/- 2.98. However, in the EN period it decreased to 4.21 +/- 2.05. Higher temperature reduced embryo quality. The proportion of live embryos (%) was 59.2 +/- 37.4 in the cold and 38.2 +/- 38.5 in the EN periods of the year (P < 0.01). However, ovarian sensitiveness showed adaptation to summer environment while the heat stress, which was more severe in the EN period, negatively affected the superovulation response and embryo production.  相似文献

1. Hens fed on a diet containing 0–05% calcium virtually ceased egg laying (production <4%) whereas those fed on a diet containing 0–5% Ca maintained production at between 20 and 30%.

2. After a return to a normal diet (3% Ca) egg weight, shell weight, ovarian characteristics and oviduct size were of a similar nature in the two groups, though the differences in egg weight, shell weight and shell calcium were significant at the 1 % level.

3. Bone weight and bone ash did not differ significantly between the groups but after a return to normal rations, bone weight and bone ash became higher in the group that had received the 0.05% Ca diet.

1. The ability of a moult‐inducing procedure to restore high levels of sperm production was assessed, in two experiments, using cockerels with reduced sperm production. The moulting procedure consisted of a period of food and light restriction for 6 weeks. The moulted birds were compared with control birds for 20 weeks.

2. Moult induction resulted in decreased daily sperm output (DSO) and plasma testosterone concentration, from weeks 3 to 7. In the first experiment, plasma luteinising hormone (LH) concentration in moulted birds was reduced on week 5.

3. No change in pituitary sensitivity to chicken luteinising hormone‐releasing hormone‐I (cLHRH‐I) was detected at week 3 in moulted cockerels. In moulted birds, a transient increase in plasma thyroxine concentration was detected.

4. After the end of moult induction, testosterone concentrations increased, plasma LH showed a rebound at week 7 and the pituitary sensitivity to LHRH was increased at week 9.

5. This increased activity of the pituitary‐testicular axis resulted for a short time in an increase in DSO of moulted birds compared with that of controls. Although amelioration was moderate, this result indicates the possibility of improving sperm production in the cockerel by using an induced moulting procedure.  相似文献
