The holoparasitic weed Orobanche cumana (sunflower broomrape) constrains sunflower (Helianthus annuus) production in many countries. The development of efficient control strategies requires an understanding of the processes underlying the complex environment–host–parasite interrelations. Growth and development of O. cumana and sunflower were quantified under field conditions in southeastern Romania. Sunflower hybrid Florom 350 was sown at two dates, in plots infested with 0, 50, 200 and 1600 viable O. cumana seeds kg−1 dry soil, under low-input (rainfed, low nitrogen supply) and high-input (irrigated, high nitrogen supply) conditions. Sunflower shoot biomass reached peak values of 760–1287 g m−2 between the end of anthesis and physiological maturity. Seed yield varied from 221 to 446 g m−2. Sunflower biomass and yield were affected by all experimental factors. Seed yield responded positively to delaying sowing from early April to late May as well as to irrigation and fertilisation, and negatively to O. cumana infestation. Yield reductions, which were a product of reduced seed number and size, amounted to 13%, 25% and 37% at parasite seed densities of 50, 200 and 1600 viable seeds kg−1 soil, respectively. Maximum O. cumana attachment numbers, recorded in late-sown high-input crops in 2004, ranged from 11 m−2 in plots with 50 parasite seeds kg−1 soil to 188 m−2 with 1600 seeds kg−1 soil. Parasite attachment number was a function of crop sowing date, water and nutrient supply, seedbank density, and sunflower biomass and root length density, via mechanisms of parasite seed stimulation, host carrying capacity and intraspecific competition. Delayed sowing and improved water and nitrogen supply were associated with increases in parasite number that neutralised yield-boosting effects of irrigation and fertilisation at the highest infestation level. Sunflower shoot biomass was significantly reduced by O. cumana infection, with reductions affecting organs in the order head > stem > leaves. Most of the discrepancy between infected and non-infected plants was accounted for by O. cumana biomass. Parasites mainly acted as an extra sink for assimilates during sunflower generative growth and impaired host photosynthesis to a much lesser degree. Results suggest that similar mechanisms govern infection level and host–parasite biomass partitioning across different Orobanche–host systems.  相似文献

Long-term (over 15 years) winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)–maize (Zea mays L.) crop rotation experiments were conducted to investigate phosphorus (P) fertilizer utilization efficiency, including the physiological efficiency, recovery efficiency and the mass (the input–output) balance, at five sites across different soil types and climate zones in China. The five treatments used were control, N, NP, NK and NPK, representing various combinations of N, P and K fertilizer applications. Phosphorus fertilization increased average crop yield over 15 years and the increases were greater with wheat (206%) than maize (85%) across all five sites. The wheat yield also significantly increased over time for the NPK treatments at two sites (Xinjiang and Shanxi), but decreased at one site (Hunan). The P content in wheat was less than 3.00 g kg−1 (and 2.10 g kg−1 for maize) for the N and NK treatments with higher values for the Control, NP and NPK treatments. To produce 1 t of grain, crops require 4.2 kg P for wheat and 3.1 kg P for maize. The P physiological use efficiency was 214 kg grain kg−1 P for wheat and 240 kg grain kg−1 P for maize with over 62% of the P from P fertilizer. Applying P fertilizer at 60–80 kg P ha−1 year−1 could maintain 3–4 t ha−1 yields for wheat and 5–6 t ha−1 yields for maize for the five study sites across China. The P recovery efficiency and fertilizer use efficiency averaged 47% and 29%, respectively. For every 100 kg P ha−1 year−1 P surplus (amount of fertilizer applied in excess of crop removal), Olsen-P in soil was increased by 3.4 mg P kg−1. Our study suggests that in order to achieve higher crop yields, the long-term P input–output balance, soil P supplying capacity and yield targets should be considered when making P fertilizer recommendations and developing strategies for intensively managed wheat–maize cropping systems.  相似文献

Airborne hyperspectral remote sensing was adapted to establish a general-purpose model for quantifying nitrogen content of rice plants at the heading stage using three years of data. There was a difference in dry mass and nitrogen concentration due to the difference in the accumulated daily radiation (ADR) and effective cumulative temperature (ECT). Because of these environmental differences, there was also a significant difference in nitrogen content among the three years. In the multiple linear regression (MLR) analysis, the accuracy (coefficient of determination: R2, root mean square of error: RMSE and relative error: RE) of two-year models was better than that of single-year models as shown by R2 ≥ 0.693, RMSE ≤ 1.405 g m−2 and RE ≤ 9.136%. The accuracy of the three-year model was R2 = 0.893, RMSE = 1.092 g m−2 and RE = 8.550% with eight variables. When each model was verified using the other data, the range of RE for two-year models was similar or increased compared with that for single-year models. In the partial least square regression (PLSR) model for the validation, the accuracy of two-year models was also better than that of single-year models as R2 ≥ 0.699, RMSE ≤ 1.611 g m−2 and RE ≤ 13.36%. The accuracy of the three-year model was R2 = 0.837, RMSE = 1.401 g m−2 and RE = 11.23% with four latent variables. When each model was verified, the range of RE for two-year models was similar or decreased compared with that for single-year models. The similarities and differences of loading weights for each latent variable depending on hyperspectral reflectance might have affected the regression coefficients and the accuracy of each prediction model. The accuracy of the single-year MLR models was better than that of the single-year PLSR models. However, accuracy of the multi-year PLSR models was better than that of the multi-year MLR models. Therefore, PLSR model might be more suitable than MLR model to predict the nitrogen contents at the heading stage using the hyperspectral reflectance because PLSR models have more sensitive than MLR models for the inhomogeneous results. Although there were differences in the environmental variables (ADR and ECT), it is possible to establish a general-purpose prediction model for nitrogen content at the heading stage using airborne hyperspectral remote sensing.  相似文献

The objectives of this study are to propose a model for explaining the genotypic and environmental variation in above-ground biomass growth via photosynthesis and respiration processes from transplanting to heading for different rice genotypes grown under a wide range of environments, and to identify the physiological traits associated with genotypic difference in the biomass growth based on model analysis. Cross-locational experiments were conducted with nine different rice genotypes at eight locations in Asia covering a wide climate range under irrigated conditions with sufficient nitrogen application. The crop growth rate observed during the period from transplanting to heading ranged from 3.4 to 19.4 g m−2 d−1 among the genotypes grown at the eight locations. About one-third of the data sets were utilized for model calibration and the remaining sets were used for model validation. An above-ground biomass growth model was developed by integrating processes of single leaf photosynthesis as a function of stomatal conductance and leaf nitrogen content, growth and maintenance respiration and crop development. To rigorously examine the validity of this process model, measured data were input as external variables for leaf area index (LAI) development and leaf nitrogen content per unit leaf area. The model well explained the observed dynamics in above-ground biomass growth (R2 = 0.95*** for validation dataset) of nine rice genotypes grown under a variety of environments in Asia. The model simulation suggested that genotypic difference in the biomass growth was closely related to the difference in the stomatal conductance and leaf nitrogen content, as well as to LAI. This paper proposes the model structure, algorithms and all parameter values contained in the model, and discuss its effectiveness as a component of a more comprehensive model for simulating dynamics of biomass growth, LAI development and nitrogen uptake as a function of genotypic coefficients and environments.  相似文献

Yield advantage of hybrid rice in the tropics has been reported recently as the result of higher biomass accumulation and better biomass partitioning over the whole crop growth. Considering that increasing biomass accumulation is the main target for higher yield potential in sub-tropical and temperate conditions, it is relevant to investigate in a wide range of growing conditions in the tropics if improved biomass partitioning plays a significant and consistent role in higher yield of hybrids. The growth pattern of two high-yielding and popular hybrid (H1) and inbred (I1) of the same maturity group was compared under six contrasted growing conditions to evaluate traits related to sink regulation. Grain yield of H1 was consistently higher than that of I1 by 16–32% with respect to the situation. Higher partitioning coefficients of the hybrid to key organs were confirmed over the whole crop growth for this set of environments whereas crop growth rates of hybrid were not consistently higher than that of inbreds. Sink strength index, as a way to express sink regulation at maturity more efficiently than harvest index, was higher with hybrids in five out of six environments. In search for promising traits related to sink regulation, higher specific leaf area of hybrids at very early stage was associated with higher leaf area, and earlier cessation of tiller production with hybrids coincided with higher partitioning of biomass to early culm growth: yet, maximum tiller number ranged from 548 to 962 tiller m−2 with H1 and from 629 to 1427 tiller m−2 with I1 while culm dry weight at 55 days after sowing ranged from 65 to 81 g m−2 with H1 and from 46 to 53 g m−2 with I1. This analysis strongly reinforced the pertinence of improving sink regulation for increasing yield potential in the tropics.  相似文献

Leaf area index (LAI) is one of the major determinants of crop photosynthesis. The objectives of this study were to clarify the relationship between LAI development and crop growth in diverse rice genotypes grown under widely different climate conditions and to develop a model explaining genotypic and environmental variation in LAI dynamics based on environmental and plant factors. Cross-locational experiments were conducted with nine different rice genotypes at eight locations in Asia covering a wide climate range under irrigated conditions with sufficient nitrogen application. The LAI observed at the heading stage ranged from 0.85 to 8.77 among the genotypes grown at the eight locations. A fairly stable allometric relationship was observed between LAI development and above-ground biomass growth during the period from transplanting to 2 weeks before heading over all the genotypes, sites and years (r = 0.91). The allometric relationship was, however, under the influence of leaf nitrogen content per unit leaf area (LNC, g m−2 leaf) and air temperature. On the basis of these results, we modeled the LAI development as a function of relative crop growth rate (RGR), LNC and air temperature. The rate of LAI decrease associated with leaf senescence was also described as a function of LNC.  相似文献

Root lodging is an important adversity affecting sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) production in Argentina under current husbandry practices, and may limit progress towards the achievement of higher yields via increased plant population density. Although there are perceptions that lodging susceptibility varies across developmental stages, crop population densities, genotypes and soil types, these perceptions have not been tested for sunflower using a standardized experimental protocol. This study aimed at: (1) identifying the sources of the variation in root lodging susceptibility in response to variations in crop population density in two genotypes of reputedly different susceptibility; (2) detecting the crop developmental stages most susceptible to root lodging; and (3) examining the relationships between root failure moment, root plate diameter and soil shear strength. We mechanically induced lodging at three developmental stages in plants rooted in pre-wetted plots. The crops were grown at 5.6 plants m−2 over 3 years on either Typic Argiudoll or Typic Hapludoll soils and at 3, 5.6, 10 and 16 plants m−2 on a Typic Argiudoll. The force needed to induce root lodging (root failure moment) and root plate diameter varied across genotypes, plant densities and developmental stages. Root failure moment and root plate diameters were greater (p < 0.05 for both variables) in the resistant hybrid across the three development stages and almost all crop population densities. For both hybrids, the most susceptible development stage was R2, and root failure moment and root plate diameter diminished (p < 0.05) as crop population density increased. Although root failure moment did not differ between soil types, root plate diameter was greater (p < 0.0001) in the coarser soil. The relationship between root failure moment and the product of root plate diameter cubed by soil shear strength (a measure of plant anchorage strength) for both hybrids, both soil types, and all crop population densities could be described by a single linear relationship (y = 0.2382x; R2 = 0.812; p < 0.025).  相似文献

Productivity and resource-use efficiency in corn (Zea mays L.) are crucial issues in sustainable agriculture, especially in high-demand resource crops such as corn. The aims of this research were to compare irrigation scheduling and nitrogen fertilization rates in corn, evaluating yield, water (WUE), irrigation water (IRRWUE) and nitrogen use (NUE) efficiencies. A 2-year field experiment was carried out in a Mediterranean coastal area of Central Italy (175 mm of rainfall in the corn-growing period) and corn was subjected to three irrigation levels (rainfed and supply at 50 and 100% of crop evapotranspiration, ETc) in interaction with three nitrogen fertilization levels (not fertilized, 15 and 30 g (N) m−2). The results indicated a large yearly variability, mainly due to a rainfall event at the silking stage in the first year; a significant irrigation effect was observed for all the variables under study, except for plant population. Nitrogen rates affected grain yield plant−1 and ear−1, grain and biomass yield, HI, WUE, IRRWUE and NUE, with significant differences between non-fertilized and the two fertilized treatments (15 and 30 g (N) m−2). Furthermore, deficit irrigation (50% of ETc) was to a large degree equal to 100% of the ETc irrigation regime. A significant interaction “N × I” was observed for grain yield and WUE. The effect of nitrogen availability was amplified at the maximum irrigation water regime. The relationships between grain yield and evapotranspiration showed basal ET, the amount necessary to start producing grain, of about 63 mm in the first and 206 mm in the second year. Rainfed crop depleted most of the water in the 0–0.6 m soil depth range, while irrigated scenarios absorbed soil water within the profile to a depth of 1.0 m. Corn in a Mediterranean area can be cultivated with acceptable yields while saving irrigation water and reducing nitrogen supply and also exploiting the positive interaction between these two factors, so maximizing resource-use efficiency.  相似文献

Heterogeneous crop stands require locally adapted nitrogen fertilizer application based on rapid and precise measurements of the local crop nitrogen status. In the present study, we validated a promising technique for the latter, namely a tractor-mounted field spectrometer with an oblique quadrilateral-view measuring optic, measuring solar radiation and canopy reflectance in four directions simultaneously. Dry matter yield (kg ha−1), total N content (g N g−1 dry matter) and total aerial N (aboveground N-uptake) (kg N ha−1) in maize were determined in 10 m2 calibration areas in 60 plots differing in their N treatment and seeding density three times in each of three years under field conditions. Results show that the sensor used can reliably determine total aerial N ranging from as little as 5 kg N to 150 kg N ha−1 with R2-values ≥0.81 in 2002 and 2004, and with R2-values ranging from ≥0.57 to 0.84 in 2003. Dry matter yields from as low as 0.3–4.2 t ha−1 could be determined with R2-values ranging from 0.67 to 0.91 in 2002 to 2004. The capacity to ascertain DM yield spectrally was drastically reduced in the higher yield range (>6 t ha−1) probably due to decreased sensitivity of the spectral signal. N-contents were generally not well determined. Taken together there is a good potential to determine reliably differences in total aerial N or DM yield from the five leaf stages unfolded to the five node stage where typically nitrogen applications are carried out.  相似文献

Sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench.) is a drought-tolerant crop with high resistance to saline-alkaline soils, and sweet sorghum may serve as an alternative summer crop for biofuel production in areas where irrigation water is limited. A two-year study was conducted in Northern Greece to assess the productivity (biomass, juice, total sugar and theoretical ethanol yields) of four sweet sorghum cultivars (Sugar graze, M-81E, Urja and Topper-76-6), one grain sorghum cultivar (KN-300) and one grass sorghum cultivar (Susu) grown in intermediate (3.2 dS m−1) or in high (6.9 dS m−1) soil salinity with either low (120 mm) or intermediate (210 mm) irrigation water supply (supplemented with 142–261 mm of rainfall during growth). The soil salinity and irrigation water supply effects on the sorghum chlorophyll content index, photosystem II quantum yield, stomatal conductance and leaf K/Na ratio were also determined. The sorghum emergence averaged 75,083 plants ha−1 and 59,917 plants ha−1 in a soil salinity of 3.2 dS m−1 and 6.9 dS m−1, respectively. The most affected cultivar, as averaged across the two soil salinity levels, was the Susu grass sorghum emerging at 53,250 plants ha−1, followed by the Topper-76-6 sweet sorghum emerging at 61,250 plants ha−1. The leaf K/Na ratio decreased with decreasing irrigation water supply, in most cases, but it was not significantly affected by soil salinity. The dry biomass, juice and total sugar yields of sorghum that received 210 mm of irrigation water was 49–88% greater than the yields of sorghum that received the 120 mm of irrigation water. Sorghum plants grown in a soil salinity of 3.2 dS m−1 produced 42–58% greater dry biomass, juice and total sugar yields than the yields of sorghum plants grown in a soil salinity of 6.9 dS m−1. The greatest theoretical ethanol yield was produced by sweet sorghum plants grown in a soil salinity of 3.2 dS m−1 with 210 mm of irrigation water (6130 L ha−1, as averaged across cultivar), and the Urja and Sugar graze cultivars produced the most ethanol (7620 L ha−1 and 6528 L ha−1, respectively). Conclusively, sweet sorghum provided sufficient juice, total sugar and ethanol yields in fields with a soil salinity of 3.2 dS m−1, even if the plants received 50–75% of the irrigation water typically applied to sorghum.  相似文献

Under dryland conditions of the Texas High Plains, maize (Zea mays) production is limited by sparse and erratic precipitation that results in severe water stress particularly during grain formation. When plant populations are reduced to 2.0–3.0 plants m−2 to conserve soil water for use during grain filling, tillers often form during the vegetative growth and negate the expected economic benefit. We hypothesized that growing maize in clumps spaced 1.0 m apart would reduce tiller formation, increase mutual shading among the plants, and conserve soil water for grain filling that would result in higher grain yield. Studies were conducted during 2006 and 2007 at Bushland, TX. with two planting geometries (clump vs. equidistant), two irrigation methods (low-energy precision applicator, LEPA, and low-elevation spray applicator, LESA) at three irrigation levels (dryland, 75 mm and 125 mm in 2006; and dryland, 50 mm and 100 mm in 2007). For dryland plots in 2007, clump plants had only 0.17 tillers (0.66 tillers m−2) compared with 1.56 tillers per plant (6.08 tillers m−2) for equidistant spacing. Tillers accounted for 10% of the stover for the equidistant plants, but less than 3% of the grain. Clump planting produced significantly greater grain yields (321 g m−2 vs. 225 g m−2 and 454 g m−2 vs. 292 g m−2 during 2006 and 2007, respectively) and Harvest Indexes (0.54 vs. 0.49 and 0.52 vs. 0.39 during 2006 and 2007, respectively) compared with equidistant plants in dryland conditions. Water use efficiency (WUE) measurements in 2007 indicated that clumps had a lower evapotranspiration (ET) threshold for initiating grain production, but the production function slopes were 2.5 kg m−3 for equidistant treatments compared to 2.0 kg m−3 for clump treatments. There was no yield difference for method of irrigation on water use efficiency. Our results suggest that growing maize in clumps compared with equidistant spacing reduced the number of tillers, early vegetative growth, and Leaf Area Index (LAI) so that more soil water was available during the grain filling stage. This may be a useful strategy for growing maize with low plant populations in dryland areas where severe water stress is common.  相似文献

CIMMYT hexaploid spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) germplasm has played a global role in assisting wheat improvement. This study evaluated four classes of CIMMYT germplasm (encompassing a total of 273 lines), along with 15 Australian cultivars (Oz lines) for grain yield, yield components and physiological traits in up to 27 environments in Australia's north-eastern region, where terminal drought frequently reduces grain yield and grain size.Broadly-adapted CIMMYT germplasm selected for grain yield had greater yield potential and improved performance under drought stress, being up to 5% greater yielding in High-yielding (mean yield 429 g m−2) and 4-10% greater yielding than adapted Oz lines in Low-yielding environments (mean yield 185 g m−2). Whilst maintaining statistically similar harvest index and spikes m−2 compared to broadly-adapted Oz lines across all environments, sets of selected CIMMYT lines had greater canopy temperature depression (0.18-0.27 °C), dry weight stem−1 (0.20-0.37 g), increased grains spike−1 (0.8-3.4 grains), grain number m−2 (ca. 20-800 grains), and maturity biomass (56-83 g m−2). Compared to selected Oz lines, broadly-adapted CIMMYT lines had a smaller reduction in Low compared to High-yielding environments for these traits, especially dry weight stem−1, such that CIMMYT lines had ca. 25% and 10% greater dry weight stem−1 than the Oz lines in Low- and High-yielding environment groups, respectively. Broadly-adapted CIMMYT germplasm also had slightly higher stem water soluble carbohydrate concentration at anthesis (ca. 6 mg g−1), which contributed to their higher grain weight (ca. 0.5 mg grain−1), and maintained an agronomically appropriate time to anthesis and plant height. Thus current CIMMYT germplasm should be useful donor sources of traits to enrich breeding programs targeting variable production environments where there is a high probability of water deficit during grain filling. However, as multiple traits were important, efficient introgression of these traits in breeding programs will be complex.  相似文献

Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) as a result of the legumes–rhizobia symbioses is the main source of nitrogen in organic farming systems. Lucerne (Medicago sativa L.), used as green manure or as forage legume, is important on arable farms under dry site conditions. In a field experiment on organically managed agricultural fields, we examined the impacts of the utilisation system (harvested = forage production versus mulched = green manure) and the crop composition (pure lucerne crops versus lucerne–grass mixtures) on yield, biological nitrogen fixation (BNF), soil inorganic N content, N balance and water consumption of autumn-cultivated lucerne crops. The study was conducted at the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna, in eastern Austria—a region characterized by pannonian site conditions (9.8 °C mean annual temperature, 545 mm average total precipitation) and stockless farming systems. Our results indicate that the utilisation system and the crop composition had no marked influence on above- and below-ground dry matter (DM) and N yield, soil inorganic N contents, BNF, or water use efficiency of lucerne. The level of symbiotically fixed N2 in harvested lucerne was 89–125 kg N ha−1 (27–33% Ndfa = nitrogen derived from atmosphere) in the first year and 161–175 kg N ha−1 (47–49% Ndfa) in the second year of the study. The high soil inorganic N supply in the first year increased the N uptake from soil by lucerne and led to a reduced BNF. Under the dry and unfavourable conditions in both study years, the nitrogen release from the legume mulch was retarded and BNF in mulched lucerne was not reduced. Assuming low gaseous N losses by mulching (15–30 kg N ha−1), the green manure system reached a positive N balance (+137 to +186 kg N ha−1) for the subsequent crops because abundant residues remained on the field.  相似文献

Varying the spatial distribution of applied nitrogen (N) fertilizer to match demand in crops has been shown to increase profits in Australia. Better matching the timing of N inputs to plant requirements has been shown to improve nitrogen use efficiency and crop yields and could reduce nitrous oxide emissions from broad acre grains. Farmers in the wheat production area of south eastern Australia are increasingly splitting N application with the second timing applied at stem elongation (Zadoks 30). Spectral indices have shown the ability to detect crop canopy N status but a robust method using a consistent calibration that functions across seasons has been lacking. One spectral index, the canopy chlorophyll content index (CCCI) designed to detect canopy N using three wavebands along the “red edge” of the spectrum was combined with the canopy nitrogen index (CNI), which was developed to normalize for crop biomass and correct for the N dilution effect of crop canopies. The CCCI–CNI index approach was applied to a 3-year study to develop a single calibration derived from a wheat crop sown in research plots near Horsham, Victoria, Australia. The index was able to predict canopy N (g m−2) from Zadoks 14–37 with an r2 of 0.97 and RMSE of 0.65 g N m−2 when dry weight biomass by area was also considered. We suggest that measures of N estimated from remote methods use N per unit area as the metric and that reference directly to canopy %N is not an appropriate method for estimating plant concentration without first accounting for the N dilution effect. This approach provides a link to crop development rather than creating a purely numerical relationship. The sole biophysical input, biomass, is challenging to quantify robustly via spectral methods. Combining remote sensing with crop modelling could provide a robust method for estimating biomass and therefore a method to estimate canopy N remotely. Future research will explore this and the use of active and passive sensor technologies for use in precision farming for targeted N management.  相似文献

Retention and/or reincorporation of plant residues increases soil organic nitrogen (N) levels over the long-term is associated with increased crop yields. There is still uncertainty, however, about the interaction between crop residue (straw) retention and N fertilizer rates and sources. The objective of the study was to assess the influence of straw management (straw removed [SRem] and straw retained [SRet]), N fertilizer rate (0, 25, 50 and 75 kg N ha−1) and N source (urea and polymer-coated urea [called ESN]) under conventional tillage on seed yield, straw yield, total N uptake in seed + straw and N balance sheet. Field experiments with barley monoculture (1983-1996), and wheat/barley-canola-triticale-pea rotation (1997-2009) were conducted on two contrasting soil types (Gray Luvisol [Typic Haplocryalf] loam soil at Breton; Black Chernozem [Albic Argicryoll] silty clay loam at Ellerslie) in north-central Alberta, Canada. On the average, SRet produced greater seed yield (by 205-220 kg ha−1), straw yield (by 154-160 kg ha−1) and total N uptake in seed + straw (by 5.2 kg N ha−1) than SRem in almost all cases in both periods at Ellerslie, and only in the 1997-2009 period at Breton (by 102 kg seed ha−1, 196 kg straw ha−1 and by 3.7 kg N ha−1) for both N sources. There was generally a considerable increase in seed yield, straw yield and total N uptake in seed + straw from applied N up to 75 kg N ha−1 rate for both N sources at both sites and more so at Breton, but the response to applied N decreased with increasing N rate. The ESN was superior to urea in increasing seed yield (by 109 kg ha−1), straw yield (by 80 kg ha−1) and total N uptake in seed + straw (by 2.4 kg N ha−1) in the 1983-1996 period at Breton (mainly at the 25 and 50 kg N ha−1 rates). But, urea produced greater straw yield (by 95 kg ha−1) and total N uptake in seed + straw (by 3.3 kg N ha−1) than ESN in the 1983-1996 period at Ellerslie. The N balance sheets over the 1983-2009 study duration indicated large amounts of applied N unaccounted for (ranged from 740 to 1518 kg N ha−1 at Breton and from 696 to 1334 kg N ha−1 at Ellerslie), suggesting a great potential for N loss from the soil-plant system through denitrification and/or nitrate leaching, and from the soil mineral N pool by N immobilization. In conclusion, the findings suggest that long-term retention of crop residue may gradually improve soil productivity. The effectiveness of N source varied with soil type.  相似文献

In regions with shallow water tables, ground water may have a positive (water supply) or negative (waterlogging or salinization) impact on crops. Reciprocally, crops can influence ground water, altering water table depth and chemical composition. We quantified these reciprocal influences along natural gradients of groundwater depth in flat sedimentary landscapes of the Inland Pampas occupied by wheat, soybean, and maize during two growing seasons (2006/2007 and 2007/2008). We correlated crop yield and groundwater depth maps at the field level and made direct plant, soil and groundwater observations at the stand level across topographic gradients. Water table level largely accounted for spatial crop yield variation, explaining 20–75% of their variance. An optimum groundwater depth range, where crop yields were highest, was observed for all three crop species analyzed (1.40–2.45 m for maize, 1.20–2.20 m for soybean, and 0.70–1.65 m for wheat). The areas within these optimum bands had yields that were 3.7, 3 and 1.8 times larger than those where the water table was below 4 m for wheat, maize, and soybean, respectively. As groundwater levels become shallower than these depth bands, crop yields declined sharply (∼0.05 kg m−2 on average for every 10 cm increase in water table level), suggesting negative effects of waterlogging, root anoxia and/or salinity. Groundwater levels below these depth bands were associated with gradually declining yields, likely driven by poorer groundwater supply.  相似文献

Poor seed yield of soybean in Mediterranean-type environments may result from insufficient iron (Fe) uptake and poor biological nitrogen (N) fixation due to high bicarbonate and pH in soils. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of N and Fe fertilization on growth and yield of double cropped soybean (cv. SA 88, MG III) in a Mediterranean-type environment in Turkey during 2003 and 2004. The soil of the experimental plots was a Vertisol with 176 g CaCO3 kg−1 and pH 7.7 and 17 g organic matter kg−1 soil. Soybean seeds were inoculated prior to planting with commercial peat inoculants. N fertilizer rates were 0, 40, 80, and 120 kg N ha−1 of which half was applied before planting and the other half at full blooming stage (R2). Fe fertilizer rates were 0, 200 and 400 g Fe EDTA (5.5% Fe and 2% EDTA) ha−1. It was sprayed as two equal portions at two trifoliate (V2) and at five trifoliate stages (V5). Plants were sampled at flower initiation (R1), at full pod (R4) and at full seed (R6) stages. Application of starter N increased biomass and leaf area index at R1 stage whereas Fe fertilization did not affect early growth parameters. N application continued to have a positive effect on growth parameters at later stages and on seed yield. Fe fertilization increased growth parameters at R4 and R6 stages, and final seed yield in both years. This study demonstrated an interactive effect of N and Fe fertilization on growth and yield of soybean in the soil having high bicarbonate and pH. There was a positive interaction between N and Fe at the N rates up to 80 kg N ha−1. However, further increase in N rate produced a negative interaction. Fertilization of soybean with 80 kg N ha−1 and 400 g Fe ha−1 resulted in the highest seed yield in both years. We concluded that application of starter and top dressed N in combination with two split FeEDTA fertilization can be beneficial to improve early growth and final yield of inoculated soybean in Mediterranean-type soils.  相似文献

The concentration of water soluble carbohydrates (WSC) is a main determinant of the ensiling potential of forages and the aerobic stability of silages. The aims of the present study were to assess the impact of genotype on the seasonal changes of WSC concentration, to adapt and calibrate the FONSCH (FOrage NonStructural CarboHydrates) model – originally developed for forage grasses – for silage maize, and finally to conduct a long-term simulation study for quantifying weather-related variability of WSC content. A 3-year field experiment (2001–2003) was conducted in northern Germany to evaluate differences in WSC content among commercial silage maize varieties and to provide calibration data for modelling. Eight varieties covering three maturity groups (early, mid-early and mid-late) were investigated. On six dates throughout the vegetation period the plants were harvested, separated into ear and stover, and freeze–dried for subsequent determination of WSC. Ear, stover, and whole crop WSC content was influenced by genotype and environmental conditions. Genotypic effects were most pronounced in the early grain filling period. At silage maturity, an effect of variety on whole crop WSC content was found in the mid-early group only, accounting for a difference of 44.8 g WSC kg−1 DM. FONSCH model calibration showed good agreement between observed and calculated WSC contents, with RMSE below 27.6 g WSC kg−1 DM and r2 above 0.84. Parameter estimates revealed a substantial influence of temperature and solar radiation on WSC content, while plant available soil water had minimal impact. Successful model validation with an independent data set allowed us to perform a 30-year simulation study, where variation among varieties and years of up to 68.8 and 186.5 g WSC kg−1 DM, respectively, demonstrated a larger impact of environmental conditions compared to genotype.  相似文献

The nitrogen (N) requirement of dedicated crops for bioenergy production is a particularly significant issue, since N fertilisers are energy-intensive to make and have environmental impacts on the local level (NO3 leaching) and global level (N2O gas emissions). Nitrogen nutrition of Miscanthus × giganteus aboveground organs is assumed to be dependent on N stocks in belowground organs, but the precise quantities involved are unknown. A kinetic study was carried out on the effect of harvest date (early harvest in October or late harvest in February) and nitrogen fertilisation (0 or 120 kg N ha−1) on aboveground and belowground biomass production and N accumulation in established crops. Apparent N fluxes within the crop and their variability were also studied.Aboveground biomass varied between 24 and 28 t DM ha−1 in early harvest treatments, and between 19 and 21 t DM ha−1 in late harvest treatments. Nitrogen fertilisation had no effect on crop yield in late harvest treatments, but enhanced crop yield in early harvest treatments due to lower belowground biomass nitrogen content. Spring remobilisation, i.e. nitrogen flux from belowground to aboveground biomass, varied between 36 and 175 kg N ha−1, due to the variability of initial belowground nitrogen stocks in the different treatments. Autumn remobilisation, i.e. nitrogen flux from aboveground to belowground organs, varied between 107 and 145 kg N ha−1 in late harvest treatments, and between 39 and 93 kg N ha−1 in early harvest treatments. Autumn remobilisation for a given harvest date was linked to aboveground nitrogen accumulation in the different treatments. Nitrogen accumulation in aboveground biomass was shown to be dependent firstly on initial belowground biomass nitrogen stocks and secondly on nitrogen uptake by the whole crop. The study demonstrated the key role of belowground nitrogen stocks on aboveground biomass nitrogen requirements. Early harvest depletes belowground nitrogen stocks and thus increases the need for nitrogen fertiliser.  相似文献

Cover cropping can have various beneficial effects to the cropping system such us the increase of soil nutrient content and weed suppression. In this respect, the species used for covering is of great importance. This paper reports results on the yield and weed control effects in potato crops preceded by different cover crops over a 2-year period (2003 and 2004) in Central Italy (Viterbo). Results were obtained in the frame of a more complex study set up in 2002 where in a 3-year chick-pea/potato/tomato rotation, each crop was preceded by 7 different soil managements: 5 cover crops (rapeseed, Italian ryegrass, hairy vetch, snail medick and subclover) + 1 unfertilised weedy fallow (cover crop absent) + 1 control (weedy fallow fertilised with mineral N at a rate of 170 kg ha−1 for potato). Two different weed control regimes in potato were also applied [weed-free crop (1 inter-row hoeing + 1 hilling up + manual weeding on the row); mechanical control (1 inter-row hoeing + 1 hilling up)]. Cover crops were sown in September and cut and ploughed just before potato planting in March. The potato crops following the cover crops were only fertilised with green manure. Averaged over years, all the cover crops produced more above-ground dry biomass than the weedy fallow (4.79 t ha−1 on average vs 2.36 t ha−1). Hairy vetch and subclover accumulated the highest N in the incorporated biomass (169 and 147 kg ha−1), followed by snail medick (108), rapeseed (99), ryegrass (88) and weedy fallow (47). Rapeseed and ryegrass were the most efficient weed suppressors and had the least proportion of weed biomass (<1%) of the total produced by the cover, while they also reduced weed emergence in the following potato crops (8.8 plants m−2vs 25.5 plants m−2 with all other cover crops). Following subclover and hairy vetch the potato crop yield was similar to that obtained by mineral N-P-K fertilisation (48.5 t ha−1 of fresh marketable tubers). Mechanical weed control compared to weed free crop always reduced potato yield and the reduction, averaged over years, was greater in N-P-K mineral fertilised control (−23.6%) and smaller in ryegrass (−7.9%).  相似文献
