Two rainbow trout strains differing in their growth performance were used to study possible interactions between genotype, dietary composition and feed level on their feed utilisation efficiency and voluntary feed intake. Two diets (35 and 45 % of crude protein) and two feeding levels (to satiation or at a restricted level of 2 % of body weight), were used. The two diets were distributed, in duplicate, for each strain, during a four month growth trial. At the end of the experiment the digestibility of the two diets was determined in each strain, using chromic oxide, as a marker, and an automatic system for the faecal collection. The body composition of both strains was also analysed. The final weight of fish of the fast growing strain, fed to satiation, was significantly higher than that observed for fish of the slow growing strain. No significant differences were found between the strains's body weights, when a dietary restriction was made. Results observed for the feed-gain ratio were also similar between the two strains. The apparent digestibility coefficient (ADC) of dry matter and energy were significantly different between the two diets but similar for both strains. Concerning protein digestibility no significant differences were observed for diets, although one of the strains appeared to show a higher ADC for protein. Body composition as well as nitrogen and energy retention were similar for both diets and strains.  相似文献

Harpacticoid copepods are being considered as alternative candidates for live feed in aquaculture, but their benthic affinity may pose problems for pelagic fish larvae. We compared the swimming behaviour and feeding incidence of herring larvae (Clupea harengus) in the presence of harpacticoid copepods (Tachidius discipes) and rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis). Additionally, we provided T. discipes via a floating sieve to improve the prey availability. The comparison was performed at 5 and 10 days post hatch (dph) via 2D‐video observations. Quantitative analyses of larval trajectories allowed the estimation of feeding behaviour through a series of indicators: swimming speed, straightness of trajectories, turning angles and swimming activities (break, sink, slow, normal, fast). The outcomes highlighted that the prey type had no significant effect on swimming speed or straightness of the swimming path. However, at 10 dph directly copepod‐fed larvae spent less time in slow but more time in the normal swimming‐state than rotifer‐fed larvae and larvae fed with Tachidius via sieve. This suggests higher energy expenditure of directly copepod‐fed larvae. Moreover, the feeding incidence was higher in larvae fed with Tachidius via sieve than directly Tachidius‐fed larvae. Thus, providing harpacticoid copepods via a floating sieve can improve the rearing of marine fish larvae.  相似文献

Ten rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) strains were evaluated during early growth from 30 g to 250 g on two diets — one based on plant protein (soybean and cottonseed meal) and the other on animal protein (fish meal). Diets were formulated to be nutritionally isocaloric and isonitrogenous. Fish were fed identical starter diets until they weighed 30 g. Significant differences in growth rate were found attributable to fish strain. Differences associated with diet were nonsignificant. Percent dress-out data based on eviscerated weight, deboned weight, and fillet weight also showed significant differences in yield attributable to fish strain, but not to diet. Carcass composition varied among strains, but none of the differences could be attributed to diet. Organoleptic tests showed no differences in flesh acceptability associated with either fish strain or diet, and all trout tested were equally acceptable to human taste panels.  相似文献

European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax L., groups reared under different conditions during larval stages (mesocosm and intensive rearing) were monitored during on‐growing in sea cages until marketable size (350–400 g). Four caged groups were followed for a period of 17 months each at a pilot scale farm, where vertical distribution behaviour was monitored. This was performed while fish were under calm conditions, during feeding and when stress events occurred. Also during two specific periods: (i) spawning and (ii) high water temperature. Clear differences in the behavioural pattern of swimming depth, displacement and used space between the groups were observed. The individuals from the mesocosm rearing were more sensitive to human presence, showing stronger reactions (speed of displacement and vertical distribution). Most pronounced differences were observed during the ‘extreme’ warm period and the reproductive season. Within the seasons, European sea bass responded during feeding and stress showing a tendency to move deeper compared to calm conditions. The increased displacements were longer during feeding and stress.  相似文献

Eight strains of rainbow trout were introgressed to develop a single strain (H‐ARS) that was selected for faster growth when fed a fishmeal‐free, plant‐based diet (Selection Diet). For four generations, families from these crosses were fed the Selection Diet and selected for increased weight gain. Growth and nutrient retention were compared among H‐ARS and two parental strains, the House Creek (HSC) and Fish Lake (FL) fed either a fish meal or Selection diet for 12 weeks. There was a significant effect of strain (P < 0.01), but not diet on weight gain, and a significant interaction of strain by diet (P < 0.05). The H‐ARS trout gained more weight averaged across diet (991% of initial wt.) than the HC (924%) or FL trout (483%). The FL trout fed the fish meal diet gained more weight than FL trout fed the selection diet (510% vs 456%). Conversely, H‐ARS trout fed the plant‐based diet gained more weight than those fed the fish meal diet (1009% vs 974%). HSC trout had similar weight gain fed either diet (922% vs 926%). A significant effect of strain on protein retention (P < 0.01) was observed, along with a significant strain by diet interaction (P < 0.02). The results demonstrate that rainbow trout can be selectively improved to grow on a plant‐based diet.  相似文献

This study tests the basic hypothesis that the removal of charr, Salvelinus alpinus (L.), would cause an increase in both the growth and density of a sympatric trout population, Salmo trutta L. The charr population was characterised by slow‐growing individuals, with a high proportion of mature fish, that is typical for so‐called overpopulated populations. A total of 31,000 charr was removed from the lake in the period 1990–1992, and the density of younger trout (1+, 2+), but not older trout (3+, 4+), increased. The growth of older trout (3+, 4+) increased, but the evidence for similar growth increases of younger trout (1+, 2+) was limited. From 1989 to 1990, the proportion of trout increased from 30 to only 40% of the total catch, but from 1991 to 1994, it was significantly higher (60–80%) than that of charr. Total trout biomass increased to a maximum in 1992 and then decreased so that the biomass of 1994 was nearly similar to that of 1989, that is before the start of the charr removal. Back‐calculated lengths of trout from otoliths showed that 2+ and 3+ trout caught in the pelagic were growing consistently faster over previous years than those caught in the littoral, while this was not the case for the 4+ fish. Therefore, the hypothesis was partially supported; the growth rate of trout increased (age groups 1+ to 4+), while the density of juvenile trout (1+, 2+), but not the older trout (3+, 4+), increased after the removal of charr.  相似文献

Abstract Using underwater cameras, data were collected on the feeding behaviour and swimming speeds of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L., gilthead sea bream Sparus aurata L. and European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax L. in sea cages. Comparisons were made between the behaviours of fish fed on demand using interactive feedback systems and those of fish fed under the standard feeding practice of each farm (control). In all three species, swimming speeds were similar before feeding , but they were significantly higher in the control regimes during feeding. When fed on demand, sea bass had reduced swimming speed just before and during feeding compared with that observed during the non‐feeding periods. Higher proportions of feeding fish were observed in the control regime cages than in fish fed on demand for all three species, indicating a greater feeding intensity during meals in the control regimes. This was further supported by observations of an increase in the density of sea bass in the upper water in the control cages during feeding. The results suggest decreased levels of competition between the on demand‐fed fish during feeding, which might be hypothesized to lead to improved growth and production efficiency in aquaculture.  相似文献

Rainbow trout learned quickly to operate a trigger to deliver dry food and showed a peak of feeding at dusk, but also appreciable nocturnal feeding. Food deliveries were aggregated into feeding bouts with a preferred time between trigger presses of 4–8 min; the aggregation of feeds was more marked in groups of trout than with trout held singly. Total daily food intake varied with the reward level per trigger press, and could therefore be controlled at about the manufacturers recommended feeding levels. Territorial and hierarchical behaviour were observed and in groups of up to 20 trout only one member of the group pressed the trigger although all the fish took the food delivered, and there was no evidence that smaller fish in a group were deprived of food to the point at which they lost condition.  相似文献

The dietary composition and feeding strategy of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), in two low‐order Patagonian streams were studied. Benthic macroinvertebrate availability was estimated in both riffles and pools. Fish stomach contents were examined to determine prey richness and diversity, prey electivity, food‐niche width, and the feeding strategy employed by trout throughout the year. Availability of benthos varied seasonally with Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera, Plecoptera and Diptera species dominating. Rainbow trout diet was composed mainly of benthic macroinvertebrates, followed by terrestrial insects, fish, algae and plants. Different trout size classes segregated the use of food resources to reduce predation pressure. Elected prey included organisms displaying no to high mobility. A high feeding plasticity allows trout to buffer changes in food availability by switching from a specialised to a generalised feeding behaviour. Consequently, trout may exploit abundant but temporary food resources opportunistically, which would explain their marked expansion in Patagonian environments.  相似文献

Smolting and maturation of 2+ brown trout Salmo trutta L. were evaluated after exposing the groups of trout to different feeding regimes during the summers at 0+ and 1+ ages. The hypothesis tested was based on the theory of smolting of a congeneric species, Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L., in which the physiological smolting decision is expected to be taken at the end of July or beginning of August. During the first summer, the growth of the trout was restricted in two groups out of four by low feeding frequency. During the second summer, food was totally withheld for 3 weeks in June–July (i.e. before the expected sensitive period), in August or not at all (control). The proportion of sexually mature males in November was 5.2% in the groups fasted during August, but somewhat lower in the groups fasted in June–July (average 2.3%) or in control fish (3%). The tendency for smolting was evaluated during the following spring in an artificial stream with the help of PIT-tag technology, which allowed monitoring of the movements of individually tagged trout. Seawater challenge tests were also carried out in April and June. Differences in osmoregulatory ability in seawater indicated that feeding treatments had a slight effect on the timing of smolting, but no differences were observed in movement behaviour between treatment groups. Mature and maturing males moved less at the peak migration time (mid-May) but more in October than immature fishes. These results suggest that the smolting decision in brown trout may be taken at a different time than in Atlantic salmon and that periodic poor growth conditions during the summer will not prevent smolting of trout during the following spring.  相似文献

Pathological manifestations in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) following experimental waterborne infection with Yersinia ruckeri serotype O1 biotype 2 (strain 07111224) were investigated. Rainbow trout were exposed to 8 × 107 CFU/ml of Y. ruckeri by bath for 6 hr, and mortality was then monitored for 22 days post‐infection (dpi). Organs were sampled at 3 dpi and also from moribund fish showing signs of severe systemic infection such as bleeding, exophthalmia or erratic swimming behaviour. Y. ruckeri was observed in the meninges and diencephalon of the brain, and lamina propria of olfactory organ at 3 dpi. At 12 dpi, Y. ruckeri had spread throughout the brain including cranial connective tissues and ventricles and the infection was associated with haemorrhages and an infiltration with leucocytes. Y. ruckeri infection and associated with leucocyte infiltration were observed at 13 dpi. In conclusion, Y. ruckeri strain 07111224 causes encephalitis in the acute phase of infection, which could explain why Y. ruckeri‐affected fish show exophthalmia and erratic swimming known as signs of ERM.  相似文献

The life cycle of the endangered freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera) includes a parasitic larval phase (glochidia) on the gills of a salmonid host. Glochidia encystment has been shown to affect both swimming ability and prey capture success of brown trout (Salmo trutta), which suggests possible fitness consequences for host fish. To further investigate the relationship between glochidia encystment and behavioural parameters in brown trout, pairs (n = 14) of wild‐caught trout (infested vs. uninfested) were allowed to drift feed in large stream aquaria and foraging success, activity, agonistic behaviour and fish coloration were observed. No differences were found between infested and uninfested fish except for in coloration, where infested fish were significantly darker than uninfested fish. Glochidia load per fish varied from one to several hundred glochidia, however, and high loads had significant effects on foraging, activity and behaviour. Trout with high glochidia loads captured less prey, were less active and showed more subordinate behaviour than did fish with lower loads. Heavy glochidia loads therefore may negatively influence host fitness due to reduced competitive ability. These findings have implications not only for management of mussel populations in the streams, but also for captive breeding programmes which perhaps should avoid high infestation rates. Thus, low levels of infestation on host fish which do not affect trout behaviour but maintains mussel populations may be optimal in these cases.  相似文献

Fishways have historically been constructed to restore and preserve the ecological connectivity for fish in fragmented rivers. However, the fishways are often selective on species due to different size and swimming capacity. As the proportion of dammed rivers is still increasing, there is a growing need for more information on wild fish and their migration potential. In this study, we compared the swimming capacity of wild caught brown trout (Salmo trutta) and European grayling (Thymallus thymallus) until the fish were exhausted in a critical swimming speed (Ucrit) test, under three different naturally occurring stream temperatures in Norway: 1.7, 5.5 and 10°C. The results indicated that trout swim better at the warmer temperatures than at colder temperatures. The grayling showed consistent swimming patterns with little variation across all tested temperatures. The results therefore signify the need to have operational fishways already early in the spring when the grayling migration starts and highlight the need for more studies on fish migration abilities across a wider range of species and seasons.  相似文献

Under conditions of intensive culture, the acoustic signals produced by fish during feeding depend on their feeding mode. Exclusive suction, as used by turbot, is characterised by a maximum acoustic energy in the frequency range 7–9 kHz and a sound duration of about one minute depending of time duration of pellet distribution. Suction feeding in conjunction with forward swimming, as employed by brown trout and rainbow trout, had a maximum acoustic energy in the frequency range 4–6 kHz and feeding sounds were measurable only for short periods (less than 1 s) in between two pellet distributions by hand. The brevity of these feeding sounds (ca. 1000 ms) requires adapting the turbot acoustic-detection systems to actively feeding fish for developing automated feed distribution systems feasible in trout aquaculture.  相似文献

The microhabitat selection of the ectoparasite Gyrodactylus salaris (Lærdalselva strain, Norway) was investigated concurrently with studies on the parasite population growth on five strains of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., and a strain of Danish rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum). The salmon used were hatchery‐reared parr of East Atlantic strains [River Conon (Scotland), River Storå (western Denmark) and River Ätran (western Sweden)] and Baltic strains [Lule and Ume (eastern Sweden)]. The location and numbers of parasites were recorded on anaesthetized fish once a week from week 0 to week 8. The mean abundance of G. salaris steadily increased to high levels on the River Conon, Storå and Ätran strains until the end of the experiment. The mean abundance of G. salaris on the two Baltic strains (River Lule älv and River Ume älv) initially increased but after 4–7 weeks the growth of the parasite infrapopulations decreased markedly. The Danish rainbow trout strain showed the lowest abundances of all the fish species and strains. Gyrodactylus salaris preferentially selected the fins and head region when colonising the hosts (all species and strains). Increasing percentages of G. salaris on the tail fins of the East Atlantic strains and rainbow trout were found during the course of infection, whereas the two Baltic salmon strains experienced a decreasing percentage of parasites in this microhabitat.  相似文献

The addition of a proprietary, fully‐fermented yeast Saccahromyces cerevisiae culture supplement (DVAqua®, Diamond V Mills, Cedar Rapids, IA, USA) was evaluated during long‐term feeding of McConaughy strain rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. Beginning at initial feeding and continuing for 408 days of hatchery rearing, the trout received either a commercially‐manufactured feed or the same feed containing 0.125 g kg?1 DVAqua. This study was conducted at a production level as part of normal (real‐world) hatchery operations, with the fish periodically inventoried and moved into different rearing units. Although no rearing‐tank replication occurred during the first 54 days of feeding, multiple tanks and raceways were used thereafter. Fish in rearing units receiving DVAqua supplementation exhibited less mortality, particularly during the earlier rearing stages. During the final 177 days of rearing in six raceways, DVAqua‐fed McConaughy strain trout were significantly larger and had a significantly improved feed conversion ratio. The overall feed conversion ratio for the entire duration of the study was 1.17 in the fish receiving DVAqua supplementation compared to 1.21 in the control group. Despite the limitations of this study, the use of DVAqua is recommended for McConaughy strain rainbow trout and other less‐domesticated, more difficult‐to‐rear salmonids.  相似文献

Three all-female strains of large rainbow trout imported to Estonia (Danish, Finnish and Donaldson strain) were evaluated in a communal rearing experiment in tanks. The fish had been reared on different fish farms before the experiment started and they had an initial weight of 400–500 g. There were no significant genetic differences between the investigated strains on the basis of three allozyme loci. The total weight gain of the strains during the trial was similar but differences were revealed between seasons. The growth rate of the Finnish trout was high during the first autumn but decreased during the second summer of the trial, probably due to infestation by eye fluke Diplostomum sp. The strains differed in the percentage of immature fish and in the level of gonad development at the age of 2.5–3 years. The Donaldson strain had the highest number of immature fish of the studied strains. Mature females of the Finnish strain had the smallest gonads but also the lowest percentage of immature fish. The level of maturation was the main factor determining the quality – slaughter yield and flesh color.  相似文献

The effects of feeding frequency on food intake, weight change and relative proportions of the major body components were investigated at 10°C in a strain of hatchery-reared rainbow trout. Feeding frequencies were from one meal every second day to six meals per day, within the range common to current piscicultural techniques. Fish were fed a dry, pelleted diet either to satiation at each meal, or in restricted total daily amounts based on a percentage of their wet body weight. All fish were forced to swim at a constant speed of approximately one body length per second to minimize variability in growth and body composition.Maximum daily food intake occurred with just two feedings to satiation per day. Growth closely paralleled food intake. Neither specific growth rate nor whole body levels of moisture, lipid or protein were affected significantly by differences in feeding frequency. A trend towards increased body fat with more frequent feeding was observed among fish fed to satiation at each meal; this was believed to be the result of a somewhat higher total food intake than among less frequently fed fish. Fish fed a restricted daily ration divided into a number of meals exhibited smaller differences in lipid content. The general lack of response to feeding frequency was attributed primarily to the low metabolic rate of trout and to the characteristically slow rate of food passage in the digestive tract.  相似文献

Aerobic muscle function during steady swimming in fish   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Axial swimming in fish varies across a range of body forms and swimming modes. Swimming by eels, tunas, mackerels, scup, rainbow trout and bass span this range from high curvature anguilliform swimmers to rigid body thunniform swimmers. Recent work on these and other species has elucidated an impressive array of solutions to the problem of how to use the red (aerobic, slow‐twitch) muscle to power steady or sustained swimming. This review will use a comparative approach to understand the generalities of aerobic muscle function during steady swimming in fish and determine possible rules for the relationships between muscle contractile kinetics, in vivo muscle activity and power output during swimming. Beyond an exploration of the diversity in muscle activity and swimming kinematics, I suggest that analysis of the molecular basis for longitudinal variations in muscle function is needed to complement morphological and physiological research on fish muscle. This will permit both a general understanding of the integrative function of the fish myotome and, perhaps, predictive tools for muscle activity and swimming performance in fish.  相似文献

The effect of stocking density on feed intake, feed utilization and feeding behaviour was studied in groups of rainbow trout submitted to different levels of food accessibility. In the first experiment, 18 groups of 100, 300 or 500 fish (initial individual weight 26 ± 0.5 g) were held in 1 m3 tanks where they were fed: in excess using belt feeders; or by means of self‐feeders with a fixed reward level (4 g per trigger actuation); or a reward level proportional to fish density (2 g/100 fish/trigger actuation). Final biomass after 125 days was c. 25, 70 and 100 kg/m3 in groups of 100, 300 and 500 fish respectively. Growth and feed intake was affected by fish density, feeding technique and reward level. However, feed efficiency, body composition, as well as nutrient retention and loss were unaffected by the treatment. In the self‐fed groups, daily pattern of feeding activity was affected by fish density when the reward level was fixed but not when the reward level was proportional to fish density. In a second experiment, groups of 100 or 500 fish (same initial individual weight) had access to one or three self‐feeders. Access to multiple self‐feeders had no positive effect on any of the studied parameters. The fish used only one of the three feeders at a time, and the three feeders where not used equally. We conclude that feed intake but not feed utilization was impaired by increased density, indicating that density in itself is not stressful to the fish. Food accessibility is the main factor responsible for the observed density – related decrease in growth.  相似文献
