We compared the gonad-enhancing effects of two diets (NIWA and NIFA diets) in two size classes of sea urchins (Evechinus chloroticus): small and large urchins with a test diameter of 75.6 ± 1.2 mm and 93.8 ± 0.5 mm, weighing 174.8 ± 7.9 g and 315 ± 5.6 g, respectively. After eight weeks being fed prepared diets, urchin gonad index (GI) had significantly surpassed that of the initial and final samples of wild urchins. Urchins in the NIWA/small treatment had a larger GI than the NIFA/small and NIFA/large treatments. The NIWA/large treatment had a larger GI than the NIFA/large treatment. The overall percentage increase in GI for the NIWA/small, NIWA/large, NIFA/small and NIFA/large treatments were 183%, 135%, 132% and 85%, respectively. In terms of gonad colour (CIELAB), there were no significant differences in gonad redness (a*) or yellowness (b*) between experimental treatments, but there was a significant difference in gonad lightness (L*) with small urchins fed both diets having lighter-coloured gonads than the large urchins fed both diets. Sensory assessment of gonads revealed that gonads from small urchins fed both diets were rated as being of better colouration and more uniform in colour than gonads from large urchins. Gonads of urchins fed the NIFA diet were rated as being less bitter and of better overall taste than gonads from urchins fed the NIWA diet. This study shows that feeding prepared diets to E. chloroticus can significantly increase gonad yield but that different diets can affect the magnitude of GI increase and the taste of gonads, and that smaller urchins appear more suitable for gonad enhancement.  相似文献

The effects of water velocity and tipping frequency (water movement) on survival, somatic and gonad growth of juvenile and adult green sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis were investigated. Juvenile and adult urchins were held in ‘laminar’ or ‘tipper’ tanks. Both were supplied with three inlet water flows (1.5, 3.0 and 7.5 L min?1) which converted to water velocities of 0.28, 0.57 and 1.43 cm s?1 in the ‘laminar’ tanks and tipping frequencies of 30, 10 and 5 s in the ‘tipper’ tanks. Juvenile sea urchins had significantly lower mortality and greater somatic growth when held in ‘laminar’ flow tanks compared with ‘tipper’ tanks. The varying water velocities tested in the ‘laminar’ flow treatment had no effect on the growth of juvenile sea urchins. The juvenile sea urchins in the ‘tipping’ treatment held at high tipping frequency had significantly slower growth than those in the medium and low tipping frequency treatments. There were no differences in mortality or gonad growth in the adult sea urchins regardless of treatment. The ‘laminar’ flow tanks retained significantly more organic material compared with the ‘tipper’ tanks. The authors discuss the effects of water velocity and tipping frequencies in system design for aquaculture of sea urchins.  相似文献

In this study the effects of different stocking densities on survival, gonad growth and feed intake in adult green sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) were examined. Two size groups of sea urchins with respective initial mean weight of 45 g (S) and 70 g (L) were used. The experiments were carried out in 755 l plastic tanks divided into chambers by vertical fibreglass lamellae. In the two experiments stocking densities of 6, 12, 14 and 16 kg m− 2 (Exp I) and 3, 6 and 8 kg m− 2 (Exp II) were used. Sea urchins reared individually in compartmentalised raceways were used as controls in both experiments. All groups were fed a formulated moist feed ad libitum for 60 days at 8 °C (± 0.5). Mortality was observed in all groups, except for the control group and the lowest density group of large sea urchins (3 kg m− 2, L). Both mortality and occurrence of injuries increased significantly with increasing stocking density in both experiments and for both size groups. In the highest density groups mortality was 60% (L) and 80% (S). There was a significant increase in gonad index during the experimental period in both experiments. Increased stocking density had a significantly negative effect on gonad growth in both size groups while feed intake was unaffected. The results show that adult S. droebachiensis can maintain high survival rate and high gonad growth at stocking densities up 6 kg m− 2 in holding facilities of the design used in the present study.  相似文献

Adult (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus) purple sea urchins were fed giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) and sea lettuce (Ulva lactuca) macroalgae that were unenriched and enriched with nutrients. Urchins were fed over 10 weeks (5% body weight per day) under laboratory conditions to determine the effect of macroalgae species and treatment (enriched and unenriched) on growth, gonad index and gonad quality. Significant differences were observed when urchins were fed enriched Macrocystis pyrifera (MPE). Gonad weight increased from 0.7 ± 0.1 g (mean ± SD) to 5.9 ± 1 g, and gonad index increase from 3.5 ± 1.5% to 14.9 ± 2.3% over 10 weeks. Significant differences were also noted in gonad quality, and gonad colour and firmness were better in urchins that were fed unenriched M. pyrifera (MPUE) and MPE – whereas texture did not differ between M. pyrifera treatments and unenriched U. lactuca (ULUE). With regard to taste, gonads were sweeter in MPE‐fed individuals. Enriched U. lactuca (ULE) failed to grow gonads significantly; as a result, their quality was unacceptable for the market. These results suggest that S. purpuratus experience increased gonad production and quality in short periods when fed nutrient‐enriched M. pyrifera.  相似文献

Juvenile green sea urchins, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis, with an initial mean test diameter of 9.5 mm (±1.2 SD) were held in the laboratory, in individual compartments and at constant temperatures (8.5 C) (n = 90) for a period of 99 wk. The animals were supplied with flow‐through sea water, and fed the Nofima sea urchin manufactured feed ad libitum. Growth, survival, feed intake, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and gonad index (GI) of the sea urchins were monitored during this period. The mortality was 11% throughout the experimental period. The test diameter (TD) increased significantly with time, best described by a polynomial equation (TD = 0.8756 + 0.584Time − 0.002Time2, R2 = 0.995). Sex was included as dummy variable, but did not contribute significantly; hence, there were no differences in growth trajectories between males and females. The study showed there were no significant differences in body wet weight or FCR between males and females. However at the end of the experiment the female urchins had a significantly higher GI of 31.1% (±4.4), compared with the male urchins which had an average GI of 26.8% (±5.4). In conclusion, the present study showed that male and female green sea urchins have the same growth capacity and feed convention ratio but by the end of the experiment the gonad index was significantly higher in female than male urchins.  相似文献

During this study different concentrations of magnesium chloride (MgCl2) were tested on adult wild‐caught sea urchins (Paracentrotus lividus) immediately after their collection in the field in order to assess whether MgCl2 can act as an anaesthetic during their transport and prevent unplanned spawning. Such accidental spawning is a stress response associated with transport of this species. The mortality and gonadal indices were recorded after a 1‐h submersion in different strength solutions of MgCl2 (5, 20, 40, 80 and 100 mmol L−1 MgCl2), followed by 5 h of dry transport under two different temperatures (19 and 25 °C). The effective concentration of MgCl2 was defined as one that does not induce mortality and gonad mass loss following sea urchin transport and laboratory conditioning. Treatment of sea urchins with 5 mmol L−1 MgCl2 prevented mortality and unplanned spawning; however, elevated concentrations of magnesium (40, 80 and 100 mM) were toxic to sea urchins, inducing a massive mortality and gonad mass decrease during the acclimatization period, essentially when sea urchins were transported under an elevated temperature (25 °C). It is concluded that MgCl2 is a suitable non‐toxic anaesthetic, easily available for adult sea urchins (P. lividus) when it is used at its optimal anaesthetizing concentration.  相似文献

Adult green sea urchins Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis were fed three different quantities (0.25, 0.50, 1.00% body weight/d) of a prepared feed during a 12‐wk experiment to determine the effect of food ration on gonad quantity and quality. A diet of kelp, Laminaria longicruris and/or L. digitata, fed at satiation (3% body weight/d) and urchins taken from the wild at the beginning and end of the experiment served as controls. Urchins fed prepared feed or kelp increased their percent gonad yield significantly over the experimental period. Affer 12 wk, individuals fed the prepared diet at 0.50 or 1.00% body weighffd had significantly higher percent gonad yields (mean ± SEM: 23.5 ± 0.6% and 23.4 ± 0.7%, respectively) than urchins fed at 0.25% body weight/d (18.0 ± 1.0%) or control animals given kelp (18.3 ± 0.8%). There was no significant difference in gonad yield between the 0.50 and 1.00% feeding levels. All feeding treatments had significantly higher percent gonad yields than urchins sampled from the wild at the end of the experiment that had recently spawned (2.8 ± 0.5%). There was no significant difference in gonad taste among urchins fed the prepared diet at 0.25% body weight/d, those given kelp, or those collected from the wild at the end of the experiment (good to very good ratings), but all of these treatments had significantly better tasting gonads than urchins given the prepared feed at 0.50 or 1.00% body weight/d (satisfactory ratings). Gonad taste rating of urchins fed a prepared diet was dependent on ration with greater feed amounts leading to worse tasting gonads (linear regression: r2= 0.68, P < 0.01). Gonad color, texture, and firmness did not differ significantly among any of the feed ration treatments or kelp control. Results suggest that the best ration for prepared feed would be 0.50% body weightld since this would optimize gonad yield while minimizing feed costs. Further research on prepared feeds is required to optimize both gonad color and taste.  相似文献

A greater understanding of dietary protein and carbohydrate levels with regard to gonad production in Strongylocentrotus purpuratus would increase our nutritional knowledge of this sea urchin and guide the development of formulated diets for such aquaculture target species. A total of 255 purple sea urchins were captured from Ensenada Bay, Mexico, and maintained in 200‐L tanks for 9 weeks. Formulated diets that contained 30%, 26%, 23%, 20% and 17% of protein and 42%, 46%, 50%, 54% and 58% carbohydrates were offered ad libitum. Survival was affected by diets; urchins that were fed high‐protein–low‐carbohydrate diet experienced decreased survival. No significant differences were found in gonad index, but gonad production efficiency was lower in urchins that were fed a medium‐low‐protein–medium‐high‐carbohydrate diet. Urchins that were fed high carbohydrate levels utilized protein more efficiently and showed better digestibility of the diet and protein. These data suggest that all of our diets support gonad growth, but in terms of consumption, a diet that contains protein levels of 17% and 23% with carbohydrate levels of 50% and 58% are beneficial for S. purpuratus.  相似文献

In adult sea urchins, formulated feeds can support both weight gain and gonad production; however, studies demonstrating the effects of formulated feeds on juvenile sea urchin growth are limited. In this study, juvenile sea urchins (test diameter: 3.20–7.33 mm, N = 12 per treatment) were reared individually in artificial seawater and fed with one of four experimental feeds: (1) mixed‐taxa algal biofilm (MTAB), (2) freeze‐dried MTAB, (3) a commercial, small‐mammal feed (Friskies® cat treats), or (4) a semipurified feed formulated for sea urchins. The MTAB and sea urchin feed supported weight gain and survival throughout the study; however, those individuals fed with the sea urchin feed exhibited a short lag period at the onset of feeding. This short lag period may be, in part, because of an initial lack of attraction of the urchins to the formulated feed. Furthermore, we hypothesize that gut physiology or gut flora must acclimatize to a new diet (all sea urchins were reared initially on the MTAB diet). The freeze‐dried MTAB and mammal feed did not support substantial weight gain. This study suggests that sea urchin juveniles as small as 3–4 mm can utilize formulated feeds for growth.  相似文献

Cultured sea urchins of similar size (mean ± SE = 4.33 ± 0.48 g in body weight) were fed biofilms only, kelp (Laminaria japonica)+biofilms (biofilms as supplementary food) and a control diet of kelp only for 7 months in the laboratory. The somatic growth and the survival rate of the sea urchins were measured monthly, and the gonad wet weight and gonad color difference were determined at the end of the experiment. The results show that diet did not significantly affect survival rate (P > 0.05), but had highly significant effects on somatic growth from the first month to the end of the experiment (P < 0.01). Sea urchins fed biofilms only showed negligible or even negative somatic growth at the end of the experiment. Sea urchins on the kelp+biofilms grazed biofilms and consumed kelp during the experiment, and showed sustained greater increase in body weight than those of fed kelp only after the fourth month (P < 0.05). The biofilms may have supplied micronutrients. At the end of the experiment, gonad production of sea urchins fed biofilms was too little (0.11 ± 0.09 g) to identify sex and measure color. Gonad wet weights of males and females and gonad color fed kelp+biofilms did not differ significantly from those of fed kelp only (P > 0.05). However, sea urchins fed kelp+biofilms were more uniform in gonad color than those fed kelp only (P < 0.01), indicating biofilms supplementation could reduce the percentage of low-grade roe. This study therefore reveals the potential of biofilms as a supplementary food in the culture of sea urchins.  相似文献

We investigated effects of a continuous and three diel feeding regimes on food consumption, growth and gonad production of cultured Strongylocentrotus intermedius of three size classes. There was no significant difference of food consumption, body weight and gonad production between nocturnal and diurnal feeding regimes of S. intermedius of all size classes, greatly challenging the old paradigm on the diel feeding preference of cultured S. intermedius. The continuous and three diel intermittent feeding regimes did not significantly affect body weight of sea urchins of all size classes. However, sea urchins in the large and small size classes which were fed continuously had significantly higher gonad wet weight and gonad index than those fed intermittently. Gonad of sea urchins in the medium size class did not change with feeding regime. The present study increases our understanding of the feeding behavior of cultured S. intermedius, with a potential of direct application in aquaculture.  相似文献

This study provides a robust relationship between feed intake (FI), gonad growth (GG), and feed conversion ratio (FCR) of cultured adult green sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis. Sea urchins (test diameter: ∼ 54 mm and live weight: ∼ 70 g) were collected in the wild and cultured either individually or subjected to one of three stocking densities, i.e. low 2.5 (N = 36), medium 3.7 (N = 54), or high 7.3 (N = 108) kg animal per m2. Animals were fed a prepared diet in excess for 56 days at 6.5-4.5 °C. The gonad index (GI) more than doubled during the 56 day trial. The final mean values of GI (17-18%), FI (0.3-0.4 g feed per animal per day), and FCR (∼ 3 g feed per g increase in gonad weight) were statistically similar between individual and stocked animals. Based on data from the individually cultured sea urchins, the relationship between daily FI (g feed per animal) and GG (g gonad increase per animal) could be described by the equation: GG = 0.619FI − 0.097 (R2 = 0.533, P < 0.001). In conclusion, marketable sizes of green sea urchin perform well in raceways at densities of 7-8 kg animal per m2 without adverse effects on FI, GG, and FCR.  相似文献

This gonad enhancement study investigates the effect of different fresh and formulated feeds and feeding regimes on the growth and gonad quality of wild‐collected adult sea urchin, Tripneustes gratilla, under farm conditions for over 18 weeks. In the first 12 weeks (phase 1), urchins were fed fresh Ulva rigida (U); a 50:50 mixture of fresh U. rigida and Gracilaria gracilis (UG); fresh G. gracilis (G) and a formulated diet 20U (containing 20% U. rigida), and in the final 6 weeks (phase 2) of the study, diet was changed to a formulated feed (20U diet). By the end of phase 1, urchins fed the 20U diet produced gonads (50.72 ± 5.4 g) that were significantly heavier (p < .001) than the gonads of urchins fed the fresh seaweed diets (U, UG & G). By the end of phase 2, gonad weight of urchins in treatment groups UG‐20U and G‐20U were similar to those fed the 20U‐20U diet. Gonad colour of urchins in the G‐20U treatment became significantly lighter (ANOVA, p = .029) and poorer quality, compared with urchins in the U‐20U group. This gonad enhancement study, conducted on wild‐collected adult T. gratilla, has shown that a formulated feed (20U diet) can enhance gonad growth and produce commercially acceptable gonads. This farm‐based study supports previous findings from aquarium‐based studies by our group and indicates that short‐term sea urchin gonad enhancement can be carried out under farm conditions in South Africa.  相似文献

Sea urchins produce high‐energy, membrane‐bound fecal pellets that contain residual nutrients and large quantities of microbiota. These egesta are readily consumed by the shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei. Egesta of the sea urchin, Lytechinus variegatus, were evaluated as a feed supplement or total replacement for a commercial shrimp diet. Shrimp were stocked at 0.49 g ± 0.06 g initial body weight and housed individually in 2.8‐L tanks in a commercial recirculating zebrafish system. Shrimp were assigned to one of six diets: commercial shrimp feed, reference sea urchin feed, collected dried sea urchin egesta, collected wet sea urchin egesta, half ration of shrimp feed and half collected wet sea urchin egesta, and egesta naturally produced by two sea urchins in polyculture. Equivalent dry matter amounts of each diet were proffered to shrimp in each treatment twice daily, except for those that had complete access to natural egesta excreted by sea urchins in polyculture. Sea urchins were proffered a reference sea urchin feed at 2% body weight daily. After 27 days, shrimp proffered collected dried or wet egesta did not differ significantly in percent weight gain and showed the lowest weight gain. The percent weight gain of shrimp fed the commercial shrimp diet did not differ significantly from that of the shrimp fed half commercial shrimp diet and half egesta. The highest weight gain was recorded for those shrimp that consumed the untouched egesta produced by sea urchins in polyculture. These data suggest that consumed egesta have noteworthy nutritional value and therefore would be beneficial to the culture of extractive species in an integrated multitrophic aquaculture system.

The algal polysaccharide agar has long been used as a food binder due to its structure, rheological behaviour, stability and interactions – properties that help to generate firm, round, disk‐shaped pellets that may be used in recirculating sea urchin‐rearing systems. Three algae‐based diets (Ulva lactuca, Gracilaria gracilis, Cystoseira sp.) containing 3% and 6% agar were tested on the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus in order to examine the effect of varying percentages of agar on pellet stability in water and sea urchin gonad growth. The kinetics of water absorption and solute leaching of pellets were measured by immersing quadruplicate samples of the pellets in water for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 days. Our results show that the pellets had good water stability, were readily consumed by sea urchins and the presence of agar did not hamper sea urchin gonad growth. Animals fed Ulva‐containing pellets reached a more advanced gametogenic stage with respect to animals fed Cystoseira‐ and Gracilaria‐containing pellets. Moreover, the presence of agarase activity in the digestive system indicated that agar may be an energy source. Pellets are relatively low cost and easy to prepare and store. They may represent a useful resource for rearing sea urchins under intensive conditions.  相似文献

The nutritive values of three pelleted prepared diets, based on animal (AP), vegetable (VP) and yeast protein (YP) were studied for the sea urchin Heliocidaris erythrogramma (Val.). Fresh macroalga Ulva australis was used as a natural control diet. Triplicate groups of five animals were fed one of the four diets ad libitum every second day for 85 days. Sea urchins fed pelleted feeds had significantly higher food consumption rates (dry basis) and significantly lower total and protein absorption efficiencies compared with the algal diet. The gonad yield and gonad production efficiency in sea urchins fed the natural diet were significantly higher compared with initial group (gonad yield only) and urchins fed animal and vegetable diets, but did not differ significantly from those of the animals fed the yeast diet. Percent protein and lipid in the gonads were not affected by the dietary source. The taste and smell of gonads were generally better in sea urchins collected from the wild or fed yeast and natural diets than in sea urchins fed animal and vegetable diets. The animal protein diet was the most stable in seawater while the yeast protein diet had the poorest water stability. The results of this study suggest that development of a more stable, single‐cell, protein‐based diet has a potential to promote gonad production of H. erythrogramma.  相似文献

Determining the optimum light conditions for sea urchins reared in land‐based systems is vital for the future use and assessment of possible commercial systems of sea urchin farming. The effects of two different light regimes, complete darkness and a long day photoperiod of 16 h light:8 h darkness, on the somatic and gonadal growth of the European sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus (19.5–23.0 mm) was investigated using the commercial UrchinPlatter? System over a 6‐month period (5 March to 5 September). Hatchery‐produced P. lividus were transported to the Aquaculture Fisheries Development Centre (AFDC, University College, Cork UCC). Before arrival at the AFDC, sea urchins were reared on a diet of Laminaria digitata. Females were the predominant species of the animal group, displaying a reproductive Stage III (growing stage) where gametogenesis was commencing. Results show that darkness supports higher somatic growth than the photoperiod treatment. Feeding rates were higher for sea urchins reared under darkness with gonadal growth increasing for both experimental treatments. Individuals reared under darkness had a higher per cent change in gonad index from the initial sample taken at the beginning of the experiment.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to identify suitable methods for broodstock rearing, induced breeding and grow‐out culture of Holothuria scabra in Sri Lanka. Two hundred and seventy‐two brooders (500–600 g) collected from off Mannar were individually packed in oxygen‐filled polythene bags with and without sea water and transported to a sea cucumber hatchery at Kalpitiya. Lagoon pens, sand‐filled fibreglass tanks and bare tanks were used in triplicates to maintain brooders. Spawning was initiated using air dry, water jet and thermal‐stimulation methods. Hatchery produced juveniles with an average weight of 11 ± 5 g were reared (2 individuals m?2) in lagoon pens, mud ponds and fibreglass tanks in triplicates. The significantly high evisceration rate was observed when brooders were transported without sea water (t‐test, P < 0.05). Brooders maintained in bare tanks showed a significant weight reduction than the brooders in sand‐filled tanks and lagoon pens (anova , P < 0.05, d.f. = 2). Thermal stimulation (ambient temperature ± 3–5°C) was found to be the most successful method of spawning initiation of H. scabra. The mean (±SD) percentage males and females participated for spawning per trial was 9.2 (±10) and 4.6 (±5.6) respectively. On an average, 1.16 millions of eggs (±1.03 SD, n = 5) were obtained per spawning trial. H. scabra juveniles reared in tanks showed significantly lower growth rate than the juveniles in pens and ponds (anova , P < 0.05). Lagoon pens and sand‐filled tanks are suitable to maintain brooders and lagoon pens can be successfully used for mass rearing of juveniles.  相似文献

To our knowledge, little information is available on approaches to improving gonad flavor of sea urchins. Although sea urchins fed high content of glutamate and glycine perceived sweeter gonads than those fed high content of valine and methionine (Phillips et al. in Aquaculture 288:205–215, 2009), the problem of improving gonad quality has not been completely solved. Because of the high cost of glutamate and glycine, it is hard to move this finding from the laboratory to gonad production. In the present study, we found that gonad flavor of Strongylocentrotus intermedius fed banana peel was significantly better than that of individuals fed kelp or pumpkin (P < 0.001). However, banana peel did not significantly support gonad yield of sea urchins compared with kelp (P < 0.05). This novel finding provides a new insight into the gonad quality improvement in sea urchins. Further studies should be carried out to test our two suggested methods of banana peel application in sea urchin aquaculture.  相似文献
