Chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta eggs from the Chitose and Shiriuchi rivers in Hokkaido, northern Japan, were incubated under identical conditions with the aim of comparing vertebral number (V N) to that reported archived data from the 1950s. The comparison revealed that mean V N of salmon from the Shiriuchi River has remained unchanged for 50 years and is higher than that from the Chitose River. The V N in the Chitose River salmon was found to be significantly higher than that recorded in the archival data. The variation in the mean V N of chum salmon fry collected during different seasons and years in the Chitose River falls within a range that has remained constant, suggesting that the difference between the values obtained in our study and the archival data may be due to differences in the timing of egg collection. These results indicate that the mean V N of chum salmon has been stable for a long period. Incubation experiments under identical conditions are a useful tool for examining changes in genetic structure and detecting the essential properties of populations.  相似文献

Variation at 14 microsatellite loci was surveyed in 26 chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta populations from Japan, one population from West Kamchatka and three populations from North America to determine population structure. Microsatellites were then applied to estimate stock composition of chum salmon in mixed-stock fisheries. The genetic differentiation index (F st) over all populations and loci was 0.031, with individual locus values ranging from 0.010 to 0.081. Seven regional populations were observed in Japanese chum salmon, with late-run populations from the Pacific Coast of Honshu the most distinct. Japanese populations displayed greater genetic diversity than did those in North America. Transplantation history in some Japanese river populations influenced their present genetic characteristics. Analysis of simulated mixtures from fishery sampling suggested that accurate and precise regional estimates of stock composition should be produced when the microsatellites were used to estimate stock compositions. Stock compositions for a 2005 sample of maturing, migrating chum salmon off the north-west coast of Hokkaido near the border of the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk indicated that this region may be a migration corridor for Hokkaido populations from the Sea of Japan coast. Microsatellites have the ability to provide fine-scale resolution of stock composition in Japanese coastal fisheries.  相似文献

The spatial and temporal distribution of spawning activity by autumn‐run Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum) was examined across multiple years. The study period included two years of extreme drought conditions when water temperatures in the spawning reach of the Stanislaus River were considered sub‐optimal for spawning and egg incubation. Despite varying levels of superimposition, redd counts and densities remained stable and positively associated with river location, indicating that superimposition may be driven by habitat preference rather than the absence of suitable spawning locations. Spawning occurred slightly later during drought years (6–10 days later compared with wetter years). This delay was attributable to deferred migration instead of deferred spawning, and the majority of redds were constructed at water temperatures exceeding the optimal temperature range. As a consequence, estimates of juvenile production during 2014 and 2015 were among the lowest on record. These findings may be related in part to the high hatchery contribution to the population, above‐average temperatures during spawning and incubation, and superimposition rates. Management recommendations include adequate cold‐water storage in the upstream reservoir, refined spawning habitat restoration techniques in the light of superimposition rates and, on a broader system scale, actions that reduce the amount of stray hatchery Chinook salmon.  相似文献

Information on the status of natural spawning is needed on the Japan Sea side of northern Honshu, Japan for ecosystem-based sustainable management of chum salmon resources. We conducted on-site visual surveys in October–December of 2015 and 2016 that targeted spawning chum salmon redds in all rivers?>?5 km long (total 94 rivers) in Akita, Yamagata, Niigata (including Sado Island), and Toyama prefectures. The ratio of rivers found to host natural reproduction to the total number of surveyed rivers was 93.6% (44/47) in stocked rivers and 74.5% (35/47) in non-stocked rivers. These results show that there is a wide occurrence of natural reproduction of chum salmon in these rivers, regardless of the history of hatchery stocking. The density of spawning redds (number of redds/1000 m2) as an indicator of chum salmon escapements did not differ (P?=?0.54) between stocked rivers (mean 3.5, N ?=?49) and non-stocked rivers (mean 2.4, N? =?36),when rivers where no redds were observed were excluded from the analysis. These results suggest that chum salmon escapements into non-stocked rivers may not be negligible. Conservation measures for wild fish are needed in stocked and non-stocked rivers to promote enhancement programs based on natural reproduction.  相似文献

This study reviews the present status of the Japanese chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta stock enhancement program and considers the ecological sustainability of wild populations while providing fishery production, exemplified by the hatchery-based Kitami region set net fishery. The return rate and the number of returns have been historically high in the Sea of Okhotsk, but have decreased in other regions since 2005. Natural spawning of chum salmon occurred in at least 160 rivers in Hokkaido. The genetic diversity of Japanese chum salmon was similar to or higher than that of other Pacific Rim populations. Numbers of alleles were high at microsatellite loci, but the loss of rare haplotypes was observed in all populations. The estimated N e /N ratio for the Kitami region was >0.15 % including hatchery and wild fish under the present high fishing pressure. Four regional populations were inferred in Hokkaido, however, genetic differentiation was weak and some river-populations were nested. Substantial changes in run timing were observed, but it has recovered gradually owing to the recent practice of escapement. Our analyses highlight the importance of juvenile quality and the vital roles of escapements in enhanced and non-enhanced rivers. New research is needed to minimize the genetic risks associated with hatchery programs.  相似文献

Hatcheries release >4.5 billion juvenile Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) into the North Pacific Ocean annually, raising concerns about competition with wild salmon populations. We used retrospective scale analysis to investigate how the growth of chum salmon (Oketa) from western Alaska is affected by the abundance of chum salmon from Japanese hatcheries and wild pink salmon (Ogorbuscha) from the Russian Far East. Over nearly five decades, the growth of Kuskokwim River chum salmon was negatively correlated with the abundance of Japanese hatchery chum salmon after accounting for the effects of sex and spring/summer sea‐surface temperature in the Bering Sea. An effect of wild eastern Kamchatka pink salmon abundance on the growth of Kuskokwim River salmon was detectable but modest compared to the intraspecific competitive effect. A decrease in Japanese hatchery chum salmon releases in 2011–2013 was not associated with increased growth of Bering Sea chum salmon. However, the abundance of wild chum salmon from the Russian Far East increased during that time, possibly obscuring reduced competition with hatchery chum salmon. Our results support previous evidence that chum salmon are affected by intraspecific competition, and to a lesser extent interspecific competition, in the North Pacific, underscoring that the effects of salmon hatchery production transcend national boundaries.  相似文献

Sarcoplasmic protein content decreased significantly and myosin heavy chain was degraded gradually during spawning migration of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta). Acid and neutral proteinase activities increased significantly during spawning migration. These proteinase activities were higher in females than in males. High levels of acid proteinase were not caused by the injury of lysosomal membranes. Considering the physiological states of chum salmon, neutral proteinase activity might be related to the degradation of muscle protein. As the changes in serum sex steroids were similar to those in the protease activities during spawning migration, it was considered that high levels of protease activity during spawning migration were closely related to the serum levels of androgens.  相似文献

Wild stocks of chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta are supplemented by hatchery fry enhancement programs in northern Honshu, Japan. To maintain these programs, there is a need to reduce expenses and labor. Eyed egg planting is more cost effective than hatchery production of fry. Therefore, we evaluated the effect of environmental conditions on survival of chum salmon eyed eggs planted using Whitlock–Vibert boxes. We measured the percent cumulative weight of fine sediments, Fredle index (FI) as a measure of permeability, vertical hydraulic gradient, water depth (WD), and flow velocity at planting locations. Egg-to-fry survival averaged 92.7% (range: 57.2–100%) in 2013 (N = 19) and 71.5% (range: 6.4–100%) in 2014 (N = 23). Survival was significantly positively correlated with FI and flow velocity, negatively associated with percent cumulative weight of fine sediments and WD. Vertical hydraulic gradient had no effect on survival. Our results suggest that a higher FI (i.e., low amount of fine material and larger particle size), higher flow velocity, and shallower WD reduce the mortality of planted chum salmon eyed eggs. This is likely a result of increased permeability in the substrate and restriction of fine sediment intrusion into the incubation zone.  相似文献

Vertical movement patterns of five chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) during homing migration were examined using archival tags. The standard deviation of the depth and ambient and body cavity temperatures during daytime were larger than those during night‐time. Vertical movements through the thermocline with a periodicity of less than 1 h were observed during daytime in addition to the diel vertical movement patterns in the open ocean. During these periods of frequent short‐term vertical movements, the difference between the body cavity temperature and ambient temperature was large while the variance of the body cavity temperature was less than that of the ambient temperature. From the results of a random simulation, the variation of the body cavity temperature was shown to decrease due to these periodic high frequency movements in comparison with random vertical movements. The whole‐body heat‐transfer coefficient k (s?1), which was estimated by a heat budget model, was 1.48 × 10?3. The k of chum salmon was larger than that of bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) by about one order of magnitude for the cooling of the body. The k of chum salmon did not change like tuna, which are physiologically adapted to conserve body cavity temperature. This indicates that the regulation of body cavity temperature by chum salmon is dependent on the vertical movements only. The maintenance of the body cavity temperature is concluded to be advantageous for their maturation and growth from the relationship between energy input and output during their homing migration.  相似文献

Abstract –  The continuous observation of salmon behaviour in some wild environments can be extremely difficult. We recorded spawning behaviour of female chum salmon ( Oncorhynchus keta ) in the field simultaneously using visual observation and fish-borne data loggers with two-axis accelerometer sensors. Using only acceleration records, behaviours were successfully classified into the eight well-known components of spawning behaviour: swimming, nosing, exploratory digging, nest digging, probing, oviposition, covering and post-spawning digging. To understand how the female chum salmon modulates spawning behaviours in relation to changes in environmental conditions, we compared the behaviours of salmon during normal flow of clear water to those of salmon during the heavy flow of turbid water after a storm. Salmon in the normal flow showed all eight behaviours, whereas salmon in the heavy flow showed only three behaviours: swimming, nosing and exploratory digging. The proportion of time spent on swimming was greater in the heavy flow than in the normal flow (mean of 98.47% vs. 92.84%). Moreover, the proportion of tail beating in swimming was greater in the heavy flow (77.86%) than in the normal flow (15.63%). Our results indicate that the behaviour of female chum salmon was strongly affected by the heavy flow of turbid water after a storm. The recording of accelerations is a promising method for clarifying the spawning behaviour of salmonids in the wild where continuous visual observation is too difficult.  相似文献

Offshore migration of Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. is partly triggered by increasing body size and high motility in the early stages of life. The survival of juvenile salmon may depend on their growth rate during the first few months in the sea, and this factor partly regulates the dynamics of adult populations. Here, we assessed the effects of water temperature and food availability on the growth of juvenile chum salmon O. keta. In addition, by combining the measurements of metabolic performance for growth and activity (Absolute Aerobic Scope: AAS) with a bioenergetics model, we estimated the energy allocation for different activities in the juveniles. Under high temperatures (14 °C), juveniles reared at low food levels (1% body weight) allocated less than half their energy for growth than those reared at high food levels (4% body weight). These findings suggest that high temperature and low food level constrain the growth of juveniles, providing an insight into the effect of the recent increase in warm and low-nutrient water masses on survival of juveniles and catches of adult chum salmon on the Pacific side of Honshu Island, Japan.

Relationships between the vertical distribution and thermal habitat, and body size of chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta were studied in the Bering Sea in summer using trawl surveys at various depths. Chum salmon abundance decreased with increasing depth, but the patterns of decrease differed between size groups. The abundance of small salmon fell rapidly with depth, whereas that of large salmon decreased gradually to 40 m depth, and abruptly below that. The average fork length of chum salmon collected from each trawl correlated positively with trawl net depth and negatively with water temperature. Since the optimal temperature for growth decreases with body size in this species, the observed body size‐related vertical habitat use by chum salmon may indicate size‐dependent thermal preferences.  相似文献

Abstract – The persistent effects of embryonic temperature stress and individual parentage on fry swimming performance were examined in a cross‐fertilisation experiment using sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka). A fixed‐velocity test of burst swimming was used to assess the endurance capacity and behavioural performance of individual fry from 10 offspring families incubated at 12, 14 or 16 °C to hatch and then reared through yolk absorption and exogenous feeding stages in a common posthatch environment (average 6.9 °C). Fry burst swim time (BST) was influenced by an interaction between incubation temperature and family identity. Average BST was longer for fry from the 12 °C prehatch treatment compared to 14 and 16 °C, although differences were largely attributable to temperature effects on average fry size. Behavioural observations revealed that fish incubated at 16 °C performed more poorly, having a larger proportion of individuals that required stimulation to swim, fatigued more frequently or were classified as ‘nonswimmers’. Within all three incubation temperature treatments, mean BST varied significantly among offspring families, independent of fry mass and length. An interesting relationship was observed within the 16 °C treatment, whereby families with higher survivorship were characterised with lower mean BSTs. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that exposure to high temperatures in early sockeye salmon development can result in persistent, parentally mediated effects on fry performance. As such, these results provide important insight into how elevated temperature events during egg incubation may affect early life history selection processes and survival in stages beyond when the stressor is experienced.  相似文献

The significant decrease in wild mud crab population highlights the need to manage the resources and domesticate crabs. This paper presents the initial results of the domestication of mud crab Scylla serrata aimed at producing good-quality captive broodstock. The analysis of the genetic structure of the base population was done as a prerequisite for domestication. Adult S. serrata from the northern to southern parts of the Philippines (Cagayan, Camarines, Samar, and Surigao) were obtained for genetic diversity analysis and domestication. Analysis of molecular variance showed that differences in the genetic variability between the four populations were not significant. Moreover, no significant deviation from Hardy–Weinberg Equilibrium was observed in each sample population and even in pooled populations. Body weight was positively correlated with the carapace width. Second spawning occurred 41–46 days after the first spawning and 34 days from second to third spawning. However, there was a decrease in the number of zoea in repeat spawnings. Twenty-four first-generation (F1) families were produced from the four sites. The duration from spawning of the base population (P0) to attainment of broodstock size F1 was 10–14 months. Four second-generation (F2) families were produced after 11–12 months. Up to the F2, crabs tested negative for six viruses: white spot syndrome virus, infectious hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus, gill-associated virus, yellow head virus, Taura syndrome virus, and infectious myonecrosis virus. The reproductive performance of P0 was comparable to the succeeding generations. Several families were obtained from one population in a year. However, due to the cannibalistic behavior of crabs, more space is required for the nursery and grow-out phase. The domestication of S. serrata is the first study done on any mud crab species in the Indo-west Pacific region. The initial results would serve as guide to understand and eliminate the barriers to mud crab domestication. The breeding technology developed from this study will support the production of good-quality seedstock for farming.  相似文献

Ecosystem‐based fisheries management requires the development of physical and biological time series that index ocean productivity for stock assessment and recruitment forecasts for commercially important species. As recruitment in marine fish is related to ocean condition, we developed proxies for ocean conditions based on sea surface temperature (SST) and biometric measurements of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) captured in the walleye pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus) fishery in the eastern Bering Sea in three periods (July 16–30, September 1–15 and September 16–30). The main purpose of this paper was to evaluate Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) growth as a possible indicator of ocean conditions that, in turn, may affect age‐1 walleye pollock recruitment. Marine growth rates of Pacific salmon are the result of a complex interplay of physical, biological and population‐based factors that fish experience as they range through oceanic habitats. These growth rates can, therefore, be viewed as indicators of recent ocean productivity. Thus, our hypothesis was that estimated intra‐annual growth in body weight of immature and maturing age‐4 male and female chum salmon may be used as a biological indicator of variations in rearing conditions also experienced by age‐0 walleye pollock; consequently, they may be used to predict the recruitment to age‐1 in walleye pollock. Summer SSTs and chum salmon growth at the end of July and September explained the largest amount of variability in walleye pollock recruitment indicating that physical and biological indices of ocean productivity can index fish recruitment.  相似文献

Abstract – Population genetic structure was detected in Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha in their non‐native range of Lake Huron using microsatellite DNA. All Chinook salmon in this system descend from Green River, Washington cohorts, originally transplanted to Michigan hatcheries in the late 1960s. We tested for population genetic differentiation of age 0 fish collected from 13 rivers and two hatcheries in 2007. The amount of genetic differentiation among collection sites was low but statistically significant, with FST values ranging from 0.036 to 0.133 and RST values ranging from 0.008 to 0.157 for specific loci. Based on pairwise FST and RST values and Bayesian cluster analysis, the Maitland River population in the Main Basin of Lake Huron was genetically distinct from the remaining collection sites. Based on analysis of bycatch data from commercial gill net fisheries, Chinook salmon likely colonised the Main Basin by 1975 (10 generations ago) and the North Channel and southern Georgian Bay regions by 1980 (eight generations ago). Thus, population genetic structure has emerged in Lake Huron Chinook salmon in <10 generations.  相似文献

In this study, we screened 103,050 gene sequences of Pinctada fucata and identified 1450 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) distributing in 1355 sequences, in which 97 have sufficient flanking sequences for primer design, and 25 novel microsatellite loci were stable and polymorphic with Na which varied from 2 to 6. Six microsatellite loci were found in the open reading frame of their corresponding sequences. With the 25 SSR loci, five breeding populations and a wild population, a total of 240 individuals from wild population (W), three consecutive selected populations (G1, G2, and G3), and two backcross populations (Do, Dr) (40 individuals per population) were assayed. In these populations, we detected 108 alleles of 111 bp to 362 bp. Each population had mean Ho of 0.5718–0.7366 and mean He of 0.5830–0.6954. Except the Fst = 0.0697 (W vs. G3), pairwise Fst values ranged from 0.0131 to 0.0473, the genetic identity coefficients varied from 0.8688 to 0.9663, and genetic distance ranged from 0.0343 to 0.1307, all of these suggested that the breeding populations had genetic differentiation but at a low level generally. Besides, all the genetic index values, backcross populations (Do, Dr) were higher than corresponding G3 values, indicating that backcross could make the offspring incline to the recurrent parents.  相似文献

We have reviewed the effects of long-term climatic/oceanic conditions on the growth, survival, production dynamics, and distribution of Hokkaido chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta in Japan during the period 1945–2005 using path analysis, back-calculation, and scale analyses, and applied a prediction method based on the SRES-A1B scenario of the intergovernmental panel on climate change. The populations of Hokkaido chum salmon were found to have had high growth rates at age 1 year since the late 1980s. Path analysis indicated that the growth at age 1 year in the Okhotsk Sea was directly affected by warm sea surface temperature associated with global warming, with the increased growth at age 1 year resulting in higher rates of survival and large population sizes. Predictions on the global warming effects on the chum salmon were (1) decreased carrying capacity and distribution area, (2) occurrence of a strong density-dependent effect, and (3) loss of migration route to the Sea of Okhotsk, especially for Hokkaido chum salmon. We have also outlined the future challenges of establishing a sustainable conservation management scheme for salmon that include adaptive management and precautionary principles, as well as conservation of natural spawning populations and recovery of natural river ecosystems in Japan despite the warming climate.  相似文献

Upstream selective movement of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta), which were captured in the Osaru River, Hokkaido, Japan, in late spawning season, was investigated in a two-choice test tank consisted of two water inlet arms and one pool. Artificial home stream water that was prepared based on the compositions of amino acids and related substances of the Osaru River, and natural lake water flowed in each arm. Of 44 chum salmon tested, 28 fish showed upstream movement to one of the choice arm, and 24 fish (85.7%) of those moved fish were found in the arm running the artificial home stream water. When the artificial home stream water flowed from the left and right arms, 88.9% and 80% of fish were observed in the left and right arms, respectively. These results strongly support our hypothesis that amino acids dissolved in stream waters are home stream substances for salmon homing.  相似文献

The movements of 28 adult chum salmon, Oncorhynchus keta (Walbaum) tagged with electromyogram (EMG) transmitters were tracked along the Toyohira river, Hokkaido, Japan, in October of 2007 and 2008 to investigate and evaluate the upstream migratory behavior through the protection bed and fishway of ground sills. The approach time of fish that ascended successfully through the protection bed and fishway was shorter than that of unsuccessful fish. The unsuccessful fish were observed to swim in currents with high water velocity and shallow water depth at swimming speeds that exceeded their critical swimming speed (U crit) during the approach to these structures. In consequence, unsuccessful fish frequently alternated between burst and maximum sustained speeds without ever ascending the fishway, and eventually became exhausted. It is important that fishway are constructed to enable chum salmon to find a passage way easily, so that they can migrate upstream rapidly without wasting excessive energy.  相似文献
