Wet Deposition of Trace Metals in Singapore
The concentrations of 12 trace metals (Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Co, Fe,Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, V, and Ti) in wet depositions are reported. Eighty four rainwater samples were collected using an automated wet-only sampler in Singapore for one year (2000) and subjected to chemical analysis using ICP-MS. Based on the volume-weighted meanconcentrations measured, the trace metals were classified into three groups: Al and Fe with an average concentration of largerthan 15 μg L-1, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, V, and Ti withconcentrations between 1 and 10 μg L-1, and finally Co and Cd with concentrations lower than 1 μg L-1. Elementenrichment factors were calculated to distinguish between naturaland anthropogenic sources. The calculation of crustal enrichmentfactors with Al as the reference element indicated that while Ti,Fe and Mn originated from crustal sources, the remaining trace metals (Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn and V) were mainly derived from anthropogenic sources. The removal of the trace metals from the atmosphere by precipitation was influenced by the rainfall amount as well as pH. The magnitude of the measured average annual wet deposition fluxes of Al, Fe, and combustion-generatedelements such as V, Ni, and Cu is higher than that reportedfor other sites outside Singapore, owing to abundant rainfallthroughout the year in this region.

The objective of this study was to test the suitability of a simple approach to identify the direction from where airborne heavy metals reach the study area as indication of their sources. We examined the distribution of heavy metals in soil profiles and along differently exposed transects. Samples were taken from 10 soils derived from the same parent material along N-, S-, and SE-exposed transects at 0—10, 10—20, and 20—40 cm depth and analyzed for total Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn concentrations. The heavy metal concentrations at 0—10 cm were larger than background concentrations in German arable soils except for Cr (Cd: 0.6—1.8 mg kg—1; Cr: 39—67; Cu: 40—77; Ni: 87—156; Pb: 48—94; Zn: 71—129; Fe: 26—34 g kg—1; Mn: 1.1—2.4). Decreasing Cd, Cu, Mn, and Pb concentrations with increasing soil depth pointed at atmospheric inputs. Aluminum and Ni concentrations increased with soil depth. Those of Fe, Cr, and Zn did not change with depth indicating that inputs at most equalled leaching losses. The Pb accumulation in the surface layer (i.e. the ratio between the Pb concentrations at 0—10 to those at 20—40 cm depth) was most pronounced at N-exposed sites; Pb obviously reached Mount Križna mainly by long-range transport from N where several industrial agglomerations are located. Substantial Cd, Cu, and Mn accumulations at the S- and SE-exposed sites indicated local sources such as mining near to the study area which probably are also the reason for slight Cr and Zn accumulations in the SE-exposed soils. Based on a principal component analysis of the total concentrations in the topsoils four metal groups may be distinguished: 1. Cr, Ni, Zn; 2. Mn, Cd; 3. Pb (positive loading), Cu (negative loading); 4. Al, Fe, indicating common sources and distribution patterns. The results demonstrate that the spatial distribution of soil heavy metal concentrations can be used as indication of the location of pollution sources.

Concentrations of chemical elements in tree roots including heavy metals from air pollution Total concentrations of P, S, Na, K, Mg, Ca, Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb were measured in roots from beech, spruce, ash, maple and a forest herb (Mercurialis perennis). The root samples were taken from a site with an acid soil type (Saure Braunerde) and from a site with calcareous soil (Rendzina). All elements except Mn, Zn and Pb (on acid soils) and Ca (on calcareous soils) showed higher concentrations in finest roots (<1 mm diameter) compared to fine roots (1–2 mm). In the case of the toxic heavy metals, this is interpreted as a consequence of reduced root uptake due to physiological processes or to organic complexing, followed by an accumulation at the root surface. Compared with aboveground plant parts, roots show accumulation of Al, Pb, Cd and Zn, indicating reduced translocation from roots to shoots. Roots from acid soil show higher concentrations of P, Mn, and Pb than in calcareous soil. The concentrations of Al and heavy metals in the roots are considered to be a consequence of the contamination of the investigated forest sites by long-range transported air pollutants, i.e. acid precipitation and deposition of heavy metals.

Metals in water have been monitored for up to 18 years in acidified regions of Sweden. The concentrations of metals (Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Pb, Zn) were determined by AAS and ICP-MS, the dissolved fractions after separation by in-situ dialysis. Elements showing negative pH-correlation were primarily Al, Zn, Cd, Mn, and Pb, while Mo was positively correlated to pH, indicating a predominance of negatively charged ionic forms. Zn, Cd, and Mn occurred primarily in the dissolved fractions, especially at the lower pH levels. Fe, Al, Pb and Mn were further enriched in humic waters. During the study period, some of the sites were subject to lime treatment, which had a marked influence on most elements, causing the mean levels and the seasonal fluctuations to decrease. Treatment on the lake surface was less effective than wetland liming to reduce seasonal fluctuations, especially for metals mainly originating from the catchments, as Fe and Al.

The fluxes of metals (Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Al, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Cr, and Ni) in two spruce forest soils in S. Sweden were quantified using the lysimeter technique. Amounts in precipitation (dry and wet), throughfall, litterfall and annual accumulation in biomass were also quantified, as well as stores in soil and biomass. The metal concentrations of the soil solutions varied greatly according to season. The leaching of some metals (Fe, Cu, Pb, Cr, and organic forms of Al) was associated with the leaching of organic matter. These complexes were leached from the A horizon in considerable amounts. They were precipitated in the upper B horizon and only small amounts were transported further downward. By contrast, the leaching of Na, Mg, Ca, Mn, Cd, Zn, Ni, and inorganic forms of Al increased with increasing soil depth. The concentrations of these metals also increased with increasing soil solution acidity. The highest concentrations were often found at the transition to the C horizon. The amounts of Na, K, Mg, Ca, Mn, Al, Zn, Cd, Cr, and Ni leached from the rooting zone were found to be larger than the amounts deposited from the atmosphere, the main source of these metals being the mineral soil. The reverse was true of Ph, Cu, and Fe, the sink being the upper part of the B horizon.

Acidified (H2SO4+HNO3, 3:1) throughfall waters (pH 3.16 and 3.40 as volume weighted means or control (untreated throughfall water, pH 3.72) were applied for 3.5 yr by an automatic irrigation device to lysimeters containing podzolized spruce forest soils of 0–5, 0–15 and 0–35 cm soil depth. The total volume of the leachates was measured together with their pH and total content of DOC, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Al, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb and the initial amounts of metals and H in the soil. The main part of H+ added with the throughfall waters was retained within the soil. Concentrations and fluxes of Mg, Ca, Mn, Zn and Cd in the soil were significantly increased by addition of acidified throughfall waters; K was less affected. As a consequence of lowered flux of DOC in the A horizon as acid input increased, Fe, Al, Cu, and Pb fluxes also decreased. The mobility of these metals in the A horizon was shown to be regulated mainly by the formation of watersoluble organic compounds rather than directly by pH variations. Compared to the control, the additional annual loss of Mg from the soil profile in the most acid treatment was c. 10% of the currently exchangeable amount.

Knowledge of differentiation of pollutants in urban runoff between dissolved and particulate matter is of great concern for a successful design of a water treatment process. Seasonal variations in pollutant load are of equal importance. Ten metals (Al, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn), as dissolved and particulate bound, was studied in the runoff from a major urban highway during a winter season and its following summer. Studded tyres and winter salting were expected to have an impact on the runoff water quality. The dissolved part of Al, Cd, Co, Cr, Mn and Ni was significantly higher in winter in comparison with summer (p?<?0.01). For Fe, however, the dissolved part was lower during winter. No significant difference was found for Cu, Pb and Zn between the two seasons. The mass concentration (mg kg?1) for all metals was significantly higher over the summer except for Al and Co, which showed a higher mass concentration during the winter. The concentration of selected metals vs. total suspended solids (TSS) showed a linear relationship (r 2?>?0.95) during winter runoff events except for Cd. A good correlation (r 2?>?0.90) was also found for the summer period for Al, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni and Zn. It is suggested that the metal pollutant load during winter could be assessed indirectly by measurement of TSS.

Acid irrigation (pH 2.7 to 2.8; mean annual input 4.1 kmol H+ ha?1 as H2SO4) has caused significant changes in the chemistry of the soil of a mature Norway spruce stand (Picea abies [L.] KARST.) after 4 years of treatment. In the surface humus layer around 20% of the exchangeable Ca, Mg, K and Mn ions were leached. This was connected with a decrease of pH and cation exchange capacity. In the mineral soil no changes of pH and cation adsorption were observed. However there was a significant increase of Al3+ ions in the soil solution, exceeding 20 mg L?1, mainly caused by dissolution of Al-hydroxides and Al-hydroxosulphates. Also the concentrations of ionic Cu, Zn and Cd were nearly doubled. Manganese concentrations are fluctuating according to periods with and without acid irrigation, showing reduction and oxidation phases. In contrast to microorganisms, certain moss species and Oxalis acetosella, the mature spruce stand was not severely damaged up to now. It is hypothesized that Ca/Al and Mg/Al ratios of single horizons are insufficient for characterizing Al stress in the field. Liming (4 Mg ha?1) led to a significant increase of dissolved organic C, which is associated with mobilization of metals such as Pb, Cu and Al in organic complexation. Also nitrification increased in the surface humus layer. As a consequence the nitrate concentrations in the seepage water exceeded 250 mg NO3 L?1.

The objective of this study was to investigate changes of total concentrations and various extract-defined Al and heavy metal fractions in Slovak agricultural soils during the last 25 years. We compared 7 stored soil samples collected between 1966 and 1970 with samples collected in 1994 at the same sites. Seven fractions of Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn were determined with a sequential extraction procedure in all samples. Total concentrations of Cd, Zn, Mn, Ni, and Cu were lower in the 1994 samples; those of Al, Fe, Pb, and Cr were higher. Based on the initial concentrations, the average total concentration changes were: Cd(-10,3%)<Zn(-7,2%)<Mn(-4,8%)<Ni(-2,3%)<Cu(-1,4%)<Al(+2,1%)<Fe(+2,9%)<Cr(+7,4%)<Pb(+8,3%). This row is consistent with the decrease in metal mobility. The differences in salt-extractable metals showed the same pattern; however, changes were more pronounced than for total concentrations. The results suggest that decreases during the last 25 years are caused by higher leaching than deposition rates and increases vice versa. The highest increase in Cr and Pb concentrations is observed in the EDTA-extractable fraction, which mainly characterizes organically bound metals.

For the purpose of studying the contamination, bioaccumulation and transfer of heavy metals and understanding the effects of soil properties on these, the work was carried out on a regional scale. A total of 30 sets of soil and pairing rice tissues samples (root, straw and grain) were collected in Xiangzhou of Guangxi, China; soil properties and Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn of different rice tissues were analyzed. The mobility and bioaccumulation of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn were assessed by transfer coefficients and bioaccumulation factors of them. The results indicated that the excess proportions of Cd and Pb were 50%, 3.33% and 30%, 6.67% in soil and rice grain, respectively, according to Chinese maximum permitted concentrations of heavy metals. Cd and Zn showed stronger bioaccumulation and mobility capability; the bioaccumulation and transfer of Cu were slightly lower than Cd and Zn; Pb had the weakest mobility. The bioaccumulation and mobility of heavy metals from soil to rice were restrained by soil pH, CaO, SOC, Fe oxides and Mn.

Soil/solution partitioning of trace metals (TM: Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Sb, Pb and Zn) has been investigated in six French forest sites that have been subjected to TM atmospheric inputs. Soil profiles have been sampled and analysed for major soil properties, and CaCl2‐extractable and total metal content. Metal concentrations (expressed on a molar basis) in soil (total), in CaCl2 extracts and soil solution collected monthly from fresh soil by centrifugation, were in the order: Cr > Zn > Ni > Cu > Pb > Co > Sb > Cd , Zn > Cu > Pb = Ni > Co > Cd > Cr and Zn > Ni > Cu > Pb > Co > Cr > Cd > Sb , respectively. Metal extractability and solubility were predicted by using soil properties. Soil pH was the most significant property in predicting metal partitioning, but TM behaviour differed between acid and non‐acid soils. TM extractability was predicted significantly by soil pH for pH < 6, and by soil pH and Fe content for all soil conditions. Total metal concentration in soil solution was predicted well by soil pH and organic carbon content for Cd, Co, Cr, Ni and Zn, by Fe content for Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb and Sb and total soil metal content for Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb and Sb, with a better prediction for acidic conditions (pH < 6). At more alkaline pH conditions, solute concentrations of Cu, Cr, Sb and Pb were larger than predicted by the pH relationship, as a consequence of association with Fe colloids and complexing with dissolved organic carbon. Metal speciation in soil solutions determined by WHAM‐VI indicated that free metal ion (FMI) concentration was significantly related to soil pH for all pH conditions. The FMI concentrations of Cu and Zn were well predicted by pH alone, Pb by pH and Fe content and Cd, Co and Ni by soil pH and organic carbon content. Differences between soluble total metal and FMI concentrations were particularly large for pH < 6. This should be taken into account for risk and critical load assessment in the case of terrestrial ecosystems.

Spatial and seasonal mobilization trends of metals in surface water were evaluated in the US–Mexico San Pedro River (SPR). Water samples were collected at five sampling stations for the analysis of dissolved oxygen, pH, electric conductivity, sulfates, and metals (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn). Quality of the water was characterized through Ecological Criteria of Water Quality (ECWQ) established in Mexico and Water Quality Criteria (Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)). High total metal concentrations were detected as follows: Fe?>?Cu?>?Mn?>?Zn?>?Pb?>?Cd. Metal concentrations were slightly higher in dry season than in rainy season: Cd (below detection limit (BDL)–0.21 mg L?1), Cu (BDL–13 mg L?1), Fe (0.16–345 mg L?1), Mn (0.12–52 mg L?1), Pb (BDL–0.48 mg L?1), and Zn (0.03–17.8 mg L?1). Low pH and dissolved oxygen values as well as high sulfate content were detected in both seasons. High values of metals (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Zn) were detected at station E1 representing pollution source, as well as at stations E2 (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn), E3 (Fe, Mn, Pb), and E4 and E5 (Fe, Mn). Detected concentrations exceeded maximum permissible established in ECWQ and Water Quality Criteria (EPA). Efflorescence salts on sediments in the dry season could increase levels of metals in water column. This study provides valuable information on the potential mobility of metals in surface water of SPR located in an arid environment where transport processes are strongly linked to climate. The information derived from this study should help the regional and national authorities to address present environmental regulations.

The study quantifies the amount of metals (Na, K, Mg, Ca, Al, Fe, Mn, Ni, Cr, V, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb) leached from the A-horizon of a podzolic spruce forest soil in southern Sweden during 2.5 yr, and offers statistical evidence of environmental conditions of importance to metal release. Considerable losses of Pb, Cr, Ni and V may occur from the A-horizon of forest soils under conditions favoring leaching of organic matter, Fe, and Al, i.e. during periods of comparably high soil temperature and moisture. Metals with a larger fraction present in exchangeable form (Na, Mg, Ca, Zn, Cd) are more susceptible to minor pH changes. An accelerated deposition or internal production of acidic matter therefore will reduce the retention times of these elements particularly.

Disposal of sewage sludge creates the potential for heavy metal accumulation in theenvironment. This study assessed nine soils currently used as Dedicated Land Disposal units(DLDs) for treatment and disposal of municipal sewage sludge in the vicinity of Sacramento,California. Adsorption characteristics of these soils for Cd, Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb, and Cr were studiedby simultaneously mixing these elements in the range of 0-50 µmol L-1 with sludgesupernatant and reacting with the soil using a soil:supernatant ratio of 1:30, pH = 4.5 or 6.5, andconstant ionic strength (0.01 M Na-acetate). The concentration of metals in the supernatant wasdetermined after a 24 hr equilibration period. Adsorption isotherms showed that metal sorptionwas linearly related to its concentration in the supernatant solution. The distribution coefficientKd (Kd = concentration on solid phase/concentration in solution phase) was computed as theslope of the sorption isotherm. The distribution coefficients were significantly correlated to soilorganic matter content for Ni, Cu, Cd, and Pb at pH 4.5 and for Ni, Cu, Zn, and Cd at pH 6.5.There was also a correlation between Kd and soil specific surface area but no relationship to othersoil properties such as CEC, clay content, and noncrystalline Fe and Al materials. Therefore, soilorganic carbon and surface area appear to be the most important soil properties influencing metaladsorption through formation of organo-metal complexes. The Kd values for all elements werehigher at pH 6.5 than at 4.5. Selectivity between metals resulted in the following metal affinitiesbased on their Kd values: Pb>Cu>Zn>Ni>Cd≈Cr at pH 4.5 andPb>Cu≈Zn>Cd>Ni>Cr at pH 6.5.

Behaviour of heavy metals in soils. 2. Extraction of mobile heavy metals with CaCl2 and NH4NO3 156 soil samples from arable fields, grassland and forest stands were analysed for the CaCl2? and NH4NO3? extractable contents of Cd, Zn, Mn, Cu and Pb. The average amounts of Cd, Zn, Cu and Pb extracted with CaCl2 are higher compared with NH4NO3 whereas the relation for Mn is vice versa. The proportion of the NH4NO3? extractable contents in percent of the CaCl2? extractable contents of Cd, Zn and Pb decrease with increasing pH, whereas the contents of Mn and Cu increase. Inspite of a differing extraction behaviour of the two salt solutions the CaCl2? and NH4NO3? extractable amounts of Cd, Mn, Zn und Pb are highly correlated and can be converted one into another. The mobile (CaCl2, NH4NO3) proportion of the corresponding total, EDTA and DTPA heavy metal contents is in close relation to the pH of the soils. Using CaCl2 solution the threshold pH values for an increasing mobility decrease in the order Cd > Mn > Zn > Cu > Pb, using NH4NO3 as extractant the order is Mn > Cd > Zn > Cu > Pb. In the case of CaCl2 as extractant soluble chloro-Cd-complexes will be formed so that the Cd mobility in soils will be overestimated in most cases.

Total content of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, Ni and Co in soils irrigated with sewage effluent increased with increasing years of using sewage effluent in irrigation. Iron and Co applied to the soil from sewage effluent were immobilized mainly in unavailable form; Pb, Cd, and Ni in moderately available form; and Mn, Zn, and Cu in highly available form. The concentrations of Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu in tops of alfalfa and leaves of corn grown on these soils increased substantially with increased levels of available metal content of the soil, while those of other metals were little affected. As for orange, continuous increase in leaves metal content with time was found for Fe, Mn, Zn, Co and Cd. The concentrations of Cd, Co, Ni and Pb in corn grains and orange fruits were several times higher than normal, and this reduces their suitability for human consumption.

A statistical evaluation of 5 338 analysis of freshwaters from little polluted stream basins in the Czech Republic indicated a relationship between the Pb, Cu, Zn, Cd, Be, As, Mn, Sr, F? and Fe concentrations and the pH, over a range of pH 3.6 to 9.6. Except for Sr, the median concentrations of all the trace metals increase with decreasing pH, but the increase never extends over the whole studied acidic range (pH 3.6 to 7.0). Acid deposition related mobilization of Mn and Be into freshwaters explains the sharp increase in their concentrations with decreasing pH. Cadmium and Zn are also mobilized n strongly acidic environment. The concentrations of Be, As, F? and Mn in strongly acidic waters and those of Zn and Cd in weakly acidic ones are considerably higher in areas receiving a higher atmospheric loading. For Be and Mn, the higher concentrations are caused by higher acid deposition rates, while for As and F?, the concentrations are probably greater due to higher atmospheric deposition of these elements over more intensely acontaminated areas of the Czech Republic. In extremely acidic waters (pH < 4.2), the concentrations of Mn, Be, Cd, Zn and Al no longer increase with decreasing pH; on the contrary, those of Mn and Be actually decrease. This seems to be primarily caused by a decrease in their concentrations within the surface horizons of soils and vegetation induced by prolonged leaching. The Cd and Zn concentrations are independent of pH over an interval of pH 5.4 to 6.0 and thus the increase in the mean concentrations of Cd and Zn with decreasing pH involves two separate stages, at pH > 6.0 and at pH < 5.4. The concentrations of Cu in acid freshwaters are controlled by both the presence of high molecular weight organics plus biota uptake and by their atmospheric deposition levels; the concentrations of As and Pb are in addition controlled by sorption on Fe - oxyhydroxides. These elements accumulate in the topsoil, even under conditions of severe acidification. The surprisingly lower concentrations of Pb and Cu were found in acidic waters of more contaminated areas.

Abstract

Fifty soil samples (0–20 cm) with corresponding numbers of grain, potatoes, cabbage, and cauliflower crops were collected from soils developed on alum shale materials in Southeastern Norway to investigate the availability of [cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), and manganese (Mn)] in the soil and the uptake of the metals by these crops. Both total (aqua regia soluble) and extractable [ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) and DTPA] concentrations of metals in the soils were studied. The total concentration of all the heavy metals in the soils were higher compared to other soils found in this region. Forty‐four percent of the soil samples had higher Cd concentration than the limit for application of sewage sludge, whereas the corresponding values for Ni, Cu, and Zn were 60%, 38%, and 16%, respectively. About 70% the soil samples had a too high concentration of one or more of the heavy metals in relation to the limit for application of sewage sludge. Cadmium was the most soluble of the heavy metals, implying that it is more bioavailable than the other non‐essential metals, Pb and Ni. The total (aqua regia soluble) concentrations of Cd, Cu, Zn, and Ni and the concentrations of DTPA‐extractable Cd and Ni were significantly higher in the loam soils than in the sandy loam soils. The amount of NH4NCyextractable metals did not differ between the texture classes. The concentrations of DTPA‐extractable metals were positively and significantly correlated with the total concentrations of the same metals. Ammonium nitrate‐extractable metals, on the other hand, were not related to their total concentrations, but they were negatively and significantly correlated to soil pH. The average concentration of Cd (0.1 mg kg‐1 d.w.) in the plants was relatively high compared to the concentration previously found in plants grown on the other soils. The concentrations of the other heavy metals Cu, Zn, Mn, Ni, and Pb in the plants were considered to be within the normal range, except for some samples with relatively high concentrations of Ni and Mn (0–11.1 and 3.5 to 167 mg kg‘1 d.w., respectively). The concentrations of Cd, Cu, Zn, Ni, and Mn in grain were positively correlated to the concentrations of these respective metals in the soil extracted by NH4NO3. The plant concentrations were negatively correlated to pH. The DTPA‐extractable levels were not correlated with plant concentration and hence DTPA would not be a good extractant for determining plant availability in these soils.
