Third‐instar young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) and juvenile Procambarus acutus acutus and P. clarkii stocked in aquaria, rice forage microcosms and a culture pond were evaluated in intraspecific‐ and interspecific‐competitive settings. Procambarus acutus acutus YOY, which were larger than P. clarkii YOY at stocking, grew and survived at significantly greater rates over fall‐, winter‐ and spring‐temperature courses in aquaria. Juvenile P. a. acutus starting an aquarium experiment with a mean total length (TL) size advantage survived at a significantly greater rate than P. clarkii juveniles. Growth rate of similar‐sized stocked P. a. acutus juvenile was significantly faster than that of P. clarkii juveniles in the same microcosms. Survival of juvenile P. clarkii in the microcosms with P. a. acutus was significantly less than when stocked alone. Estimated survival of 2200 P. a. acutus and 2200 P. clarkii YOY in a culture pond over a 174‐day grow‐out period was 84% and 57% respectively. Growth rate of these YOY P. a. acutus and P. clarkii was 0.48 and 0.40 mm TL day?1. The body‐size advantage at hatching and through the faster growth of P. a. acutus was important in defining competitive interaction with P. clarkii.  相似文献

On‐farm fish production experiments were conducted for 240 days to investigate the effect of stocking density on growth, yield and economic benefits of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in monoculture and polyculture with African sharptooth catfish (Clarias gariepinus). Low stocking density (LSD), medium stocking density (MSD) and high stocking density (HSD) of 30 000, 60 000 and 90 000 fish ha?1 respectively, were tested. O. niloticus cultured in polyculture attained significantly higher mean weight gain than those cultured in monoculture. O. niloticus and C. gariepinus raised together in polyculture attained significantly higher net annual yield than O. niloticus cultured alone in monoculture. Profitability analysis using partial enterprise budgets revealed that polyculture is a more profitable system than monoculture. The highest growth, yield and economic benefits were achieved at HSD and MSD than at LSD with no significant difference between HSD and MSD. Results demonstrate that farmers can achieve the highest net yield and economic benefits by culturing O. niloticus and C. gariepinus in polyculture at HSD and MSD, preferably MSD for economic reasons.  相似文献

Shire tilapia, Oreochromis shiranus shiranus (Boulenger 1897), was grown in monoculture and polyculture with either straightfin barb, Barbus paludinosus (Peters 1852), or threespot barb, Barhus trimaculatus (Peters 1852), (collectively known as matemba) under conditions which simulated smallholder farming conditions in Southern Malawi. Over 150 days, B. paludinosus-O. shiranus shiranus polyculture was significantly (P < 0.05) more productive than either O. shiranus shiranus or B. paludinosus monoculture. Over 107 days. B. trimaculatus-O. shiranus shiranus monocultures and polyculture were equally productive (P < 0.05). Average weights of O. shiranus shiranus and matemba were not affected by polyculture (P < 0.05). Survival of O. shiranus shiranus from stocking to harvest was not affected by polyculture with B. paludinosus, but was significantly (P < 0.05) lower in polyculture with B. trimaculatus. Survival of matemba from stocking to harvest was not affected by polyculture (P<0.05). Total weight and number of O. shiranus shiranus and B. paludinosus juveniles produced during growout were the same in monoculture and polyculture (P<0.05). but total weight of B. trimaculatus was significantly (P<0.05) lower in polyculture. Polycultures were clearly more profitable than all monocultures. Next most profitable were tilapia monocultures. Matemba monocultures were least profitable. Based on these findings, preliminary protocols for the development of other indigenous fish species for aquaculture are described.  相似文献

Photoperiod and stocking density are critical factors influencing the performance of decapod crustaceans in culture, however, their influence on growth; survival and biochemical physiology of crayfish broodstock have rarely been considered. Analysis of biochemical physiology in crayfish broodstock during the non‐breeding season provides information on the energy storage requirements of broodstock for increased survival and reproductive output. Growth rate, moulting frequency, survival and biochemical physiology were measured in Astacus leptodactylus broodstock that were cultured at three different photoperiods (18L:6D; 12L:12D; and 6L:18D) and three stocking densities (10, 20 and 40 individuals m?2) during non‐breeding season. Survival of crayfish was highest at 18L:6D photophase and 10 m?2 (100%) than other treatments. Survival in the high stocking density was high when combined with 18L:6D photophase, but weight gain (WG) and specific growth rate (SGR) were higher at shorter photophase and lower stocking density. Longer photophase (18L:6D) increased stress responses, characterized by increased haemolymph lactate and glucose levels. Stocking density did not affect proximate composition of crayfish; however, individuals cultured at 18L:6D photophase had higher lipid content than other photoperiod treatments. The study demonstrated that culturing A. leptodactylus at 18L:6D photophase and 10 m?2 is critical for increased survival of broodstock.  相似文献

The feasibility of polyculture of Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man) with two fish species, Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.), and common carp, Cyprinus carpio L., was examined and compared with monoculture of M. rosenbergii in 100-m2 ponds. Overall percentage of females (56.8%) was higher than that of males (43.2%). The proportions of females, males and their morphotypes did not differ significantly between monoculture and polyculture. After 196 days of culture, the mean harvest weight of prawns in monoculture (30.2 g) was significantly greater than that in polyculture (21.3 g). Yield in monoculture (1152 kg ha-1) was significantly greater than (1.62 times) that of polyculture (711 kg ha-1). Total yield from polyculture including yield of tilapia (2544 kg ha-1) and common carp (2999 kg ha-1) was almost five times as great as that of prawn monoculture. Survival and food conversion rate of M. rosenbergii did not differ significantly between monoculture and polyculture.  相似文献

The system nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P) budget, N/P utilization rate and the physiological response mechanism of the abalone Haliotis discus hannai (body weight: 12.87 ± 0.82 g) and the sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus (body weight: 10.85 ± 1.16 g) to different co‐culture environment conditions were examined. Animals were kept in a multilayer, cubic recirculating aquaculture system at different polyculture densities (abalones at 400 ind/m2in monoculture [Group C] and abalones at 400 ind/m2with sea cucumbers at 10 ind/m2 [AS1] or 20 ind/m2 [AS2]). Each treatment was replicated four times, and the experimental cycle was 90 days. No significant difference in survival rate of abalones was detected when the stocking density of sea cucumbers increased from 10 to 20 ind/m2, but the concentrations of total ammonia nitrogen and nitrite nitrogen in the water were significantly higher in AS2 than in AS1. Survival rate, specific growth rate (SGR) of body weight of sea cucumbers and SGR of body weight of abalones were significantly lower in AS2 than in AS1. No significant difference in protease (PES), lipase, amylase and cellulase activities of abalones was identified between Group C and AS1, but the PES and amylase activities of abalones and sea cucumbers in AS1 were significantly higher than those in AS2. In AS1, the N/P output from harvesting of abalones and sea cucumbers and the N/P utilization rates were significantly higher than those in AS2. Although the N/P output from faeces was significantly lower in AS2 than in Group C and AS1, the N/P output from the water layer was significantly higher than that in AS1. The expression levels of Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn‐SOD) and heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) of both abalones and sea cucumbers in AS2 were significantly higher than those in AS1. No significant difference in expression of catalase (CAT) and HSP90of abalones was identified among these groups, but the expression levels of CAT and HSP90of sea cucumbers in AS2 were significantly higher than those in AS1. These results indicate that stocking sea cucumbers at 10 ind/m2 in the polyculture system will relieve the organic load on the system and improve the N/P utilization rate. It will also increase aquaculture production and improve the ecological and economic benefits of the system.  相似文献

Redclaw crayfish, Cherax quadricarinatus, early juveniles were reared at different stocking densities in a closed recirculation system using 12-L plastic containers as rearing tanks. Initial stocking densities were 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 per liter (66, 89, 111, 133, and 156 crayfish/m2, respectively). Rearing period was 42 days. Each density was tested with five replicates. Shelter (0.112 m2) was added to double the surface area of rearing tanks. Animals were fed ad libitum twice a day with a commercial diet containing 35% crude protein. There were no significant differences (P < 0.05) in length and specific growth rate (SGR) among stocking densities. Final weight and daily weight gain, however, were significantly higher at the density of 66 per m2 (1.0 per liter). Total biomass at harvest increased with density. Survival was affected by stocking density from day 28 onward, decreasing with density from 62.7 ± 7.6% obtained at 66 crayfish/m2 to 44.85 ± 8.18% at 156 crayfish/m2.  相似文献

Polyculture of fish has been shown to be an effective means of increasing production beyond that achieved in monoculture, but little research has been conducted to evaluate the effect of polyculture on production of shrimp species. This research was designed to investigate performance of Penaeus vannamei (v) and P. stylirostris (s) in monoculture (treatments 100v and 100s) as well as in polyculture at various species ratios (75v:25s, 50v:50s, and 25v:75s) at a constant density of 1.8 × 105 /ha. Shrimp were stocked into fifteen 0.1-ha ponds at the Texas A&M University Mariculture Facility for 123–134 days. Results indicate a higher mean survival rate (73 vs 22%) but lower mean growth rate (0.09 vs 0.14 g/day) of P. vannamei than P. stylirostris. Survival rates of neither species differed significantly among treatments. Final weight of each species significantly decreased with increasing density of the same species but significantly increased with increasing density of the other species. Best growth of both species occurred in the 75v:25s treatment. Observed differences in distribution and diel activity of the two species within ponds may partly explain the compatability of these two species in polyculture. Production rates (range, 690 to 2,180 kg/ha) and value (range, US$2,720 to US$5,740/ha) among treatments generally increased with increasing composition of P. vannamei; however, no significant difference in mean value was detected between the 100v and 75v:25s treatments. As a secondary objective of this study, performance of shrimp (25v: 75s treatment) in a single-phase pond system was compared to that in a three-phase (nursery, intermediate, and grow-out) system. Survival, growth, production, and value were found to be similar between systems.  相似文献

New and viable species for aquaponics and integrated multi‐trophic aquaculture (IMTA) in freshwater systems can improve yields and sustainability of aquaculture. Freshwater crayfish species such as Astacus astacus and Pontastacus leptodactylus are omnivorous feeders and considered candidates for feeding on faecal matters in existing aquaculture systems. Feeding trials were conducted to determine growth response and RNA/DNA ratio in freshwater crayfish fed fish waste. Carapace length and wet weight were measured to determine the growth response. Juvenile A. astacus was fed faeces of hybrid striped bass (Morone chrysops × Morone saxatilis) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), while adult P. leptodactylus was fed with two commercial pellet diets and pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) faeces. The nutritional composition of hybrid striped bass faeces was close to optimal diet composition of A. astacus, and crayfish showed significantly higher carapace growth, weight gain and weight gain per moult as the group fed rainbow trout faeces. The growth of P. leptodactylus was significantly lower in terms of weight gain and weight gain percentage per moult for crayfish fed on pikeperch faeces. Thus, this study can recommend a co‐cultivation of hybrid striped bass and A. astacus within one system, but cannot recommend co‐cultivation of P. leptodactylus with pikeperch. Additionally, this study showed controversial results of RNA/DNA ratio and weight gain of both crayfish species. Thus, RNA/DNA ratio cannot be approved for investigations on crayfish physiological status in controlled feeding experiments if animals are fed with an inadequate diet.  相似文献

Overfeeding in aquaculture can lead to suboptimal growth and increased production costs. Red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, is one of the most noteworthy species cultured in China, but little information is available on the optimal feeding levels of this species, especially in ponds cultured with macrophytes. In this study, we tested the effects of five different feeding levels (20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% satiation) of an artificial diet on growth performance and muscle composition of juvenile P. clarkii in 15 concrete ponds cultured with the macrophyte Hydrilla verticillata (three replicates for each treatment). The results showed that growth performance decreased only when feeding levels were below 60% satiation. Muscle composition analysis revealed that the moisture and ash contents of muscle did not vary significantly with feeding levels but that the lipid and protein contents of muscle significantly decreased when P. clarkii was fed to 40% satiation. Stable isotope analysis suggested a shift in crayfish diets to easily available H. verticillata when feeding levels decreased. With this study, we hope to encourage crayfish farmers to reduce feeding levels and increase natural food items such as macrophytes in cultured ponds to maximize crayfish yields and reduce production costs.  相似文献

1. No freshwater crayfish are indigenous to continental Africa, but four species have been introduced to the continent. One of these is the North American red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii, which has been introduced into several African countries, mainly for aquaculture, and has had demonstrable impacts where it has escaped captivity. In South Africa, the documentation of this species in farm dams near Dullstroom and the adjacent Crocodile River in 1988 resulted in an eradication attempt in 1994, with unknown results. 2. In order to evaluate the status of P. clarkii in South Africa, dams on the previously invaded farm and the Crocodile River were sampled four times between December 2015 and June 2016 using visual surveys, trapping, dipnetting and electrofishing. This yielded a single reproductively active male P. clarkii from one of the farm ponds, while many other native aquatic species were found in high numbers. 3. It is clear from this study that P. clarkii was not eradicated in South Africa and that individuals have been surviving in the wild (i.e. outside captivity or cultivation) for at least 28 years in the location where it was introduced. Containment and eradication of the species are proposed as management actions, which have major importance in preventing undesirable further spread or translocation of this species into new aquatic environments in South Africa.  相似文献

Spiroplasma eriocheiris is the first spiroplasma strain known to be pathogenic to freshwater crustaceans. It has caused considerable economic losses both in the freshwater crayfish Procambarus clarkii (Girard) and in some other crustaceans. The monitoring of the pathogen in crustacean populations and study of its behaviour in the laboratory require the development of reliable diagnostic tools. In this article, we improved microscopic identification of S. eriocheiris by combining in situ hybridization with specific fluorescently labelled oligonucleotide probes. The established fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) allowed simultaneous visualization, identification and localization of S. eriocheiris in the tissues of diseased crayfish P. clarkii and exhibited low background autofluorescence and ideal signal‐to‐noise ratio. With the advantages of better tissue penetration, potentially more specific and stable, we designed three species‐specific oligonucleotide probes utilizing the sequences of 16S‐23S rRNA intergenic spacer regions (ISRs) of S. eriocheiris. Positive hybridization signals were visualized in haemocytes and connective tissues of hepatopancreas, cardiac muscle and gill from diseased crayfish. This unique distribution pattern matched the pathological changes when diagnosed by H&E staining and indicated that S. eriocheiris probably spread throughout the tissues in P. clarkii by hemokinesis. This assay will facilitate our understanding of the pathogenesis of S. eriocheiris and enhance the early diagnosis of the novel pathogen.  相似文献

In this study, we evaluated the production potential of the polyculture of Freshwater Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare, Cichlidae) and Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). Two experimental trials were set up. The first trial entailed the use of a randomized design to investigate three treatments options: angelfish monoculture, shrimp monoculture, and fish and shrimp polyculture in 12 experimental 15 m2 ponds. In the second trial, we investigated two treatments (polyculture of caged fish and uncaged fish) in 10 experimental units. In trial 1, polyculture negatively affected fish growth and survival. However, fish did not affect shrimp growth and the greatest profit was achieved in polyculture. In trial 2, caging fish improve the growth of both fish and shrimp. An economic analysis showed the greatest profit and benefit cost ratio for caged fish compared with uncaged fish. We conclude that growing P. scalare and L. vannamei together is a better strategy than shrimp monoculture in low‐salinity water. The use of caged fish in such a polyculture operation would enhance productivity and profitability.  相似文献

Effects of size grading and stocking density on growth and survival of 3.5‐month‐old signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus Dana) juveniles were investigated in a 3 × 2 factorial design with size group (small, large and mixed) and stocking density (25 and 200 individuals m?2) as factors for 90 days. Carapace length and wet weight growth of the juveniles were affected by the presence or absence of other size groups, stocking density and animal size. All factors had statistically significant interactions, which make the interpretation of the results more complicated. The smaller crayfish grew faster in the absence of large animals and larger animals benefited from the presence of smaller cospecies. Increasing density decreased the growth in length and weight. Survival (82–100%) was good in all groups. Subsequently, the within population dynamics was studied by selectively removing the largest individuals (selectively removing (SR) group). Effects on growth and survival of the remaining juveniles were evaluated on 6‐month‐old P. leniusculus juveniles reared in plastic tanks (100 juveniles m?2) for 122 days. Size distribution manipulation was performed at days 34 and 70. Juveniles in SR group grew significantly faster in comparison with a control group (RR), from which juveniles were removed randomly. Also, the survival rate was significantly higher in the SR group than in the RR group. In conclusion, size grading of juvenile P. leniusculus either at the start of the experiment or repeatedly during the experiment increased growth performance of smaller animals in length and weight.  相似文献

To compare the effect of polyculture against conventional monoculture on ornamental carp production, investigations on food selection and growth performance of koi carp (K), Cyprinus carpio L. and goldfish (G), Carassius auratus (L.) were conducted in a 11‐week rearing experiment in two monoculture (100% K and 100% G) and five polyculture (90% K–10% G, 70% K–30% G, 50% K–50% G, 30% K–70% G and 10% K–90% G) conditions in tropical ponds. There were three replicates for each treatment. Environmental conditions and food availability were similar in all the treatments. Ivlev's electivity index showed that both fish species avoided phytoplankton and preferred cladocerans to other zooplankton groups (copepods and rotifers) in monotypic conditions. However, in the polyculture treatments, the positive electivity of goldfish towards cladocerans reduced significantly (P<0.05), while the percentage of copepods, rotifers and phytoplankton in the gut content increased. No significant differences in weight gain, specific growth rate and deformities were recorded at harvest for koi carp between the different treatments (P>0.05). Even the survival rate of koi carp recorded above 90% in all the treatments. However, the goldfish recorded significantly better weight gain, specific growth rate and survival in monoculture (100% G), compared with the polyculture treatments (P<0.05). Goldfish deformities were lowest (P<0.05) in the monoculture treatment (2.42%). The number of marketable fish above a set size limit of 4 g total weight was significantly higher in the two monoculture treatments, compared with the five polyculture treatments (P<0.05). Keeping in view of the dietary similarities of koi carp and goldfish, and the aggressive nature of koi carp in polyculture, it is suggested to refrain from polyculture of goldfish and koi carp until further documentations relating to optimum stocking density and management of polyculture of ornamental carps are available.  相似文献

  1. The large island of New Guinea has a rich indigenous astacofauna represented by numerous parastacids from the genus Cherax. The western half of the island is part of Indonesian territory.
  2. Indonesia is known to be the main exporter of ornamental crayfish globally, and certain New Guinean species are exploited as ornamentals within the international pet trade. Moreover, one non‐indigenous species has been previously recorded being cultured in Java, Indonesia. This species, the North American Procambarus clarkii, is a vector of crayfish plague, the disease that is lethal to most parastacids. This population has already tested positive for the disease.
  3. As the transport of non‐indigenous crayfish within the Indonesian territory is not restricted, their introduction to New Guinea can be expected. The Indonesian market was therefore surveyed for ornamental crayfish and their environmental suitability evaluated, as represented by temperature during the drought and rainy seasons in New Guinea.
  4. Four North American and one Australian species were found advertised for sale. One of them, P. clarkii, was assessed as the most damaging species, followed by other North American species. A total ban on the culture and transport of the highest risk crayfish species in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea is recommended.

Growth experiments carried out with two juvenile crayfish species, Astacus leptodactylus Eschscholtz and Pacifastacus leniusculus (Dana), at different temperatures and densities highlighted the problem of cannibalism under conditions aimed at intensifying crayfish production. Cannibalism proved to be much lower in A. leptodactylus than P. leniusculus, suggesting that the former might be the better candidate for astaciculture. In the first of two population survival trials, A. leptodactylus showed a higher survival rate than P. leniusculus, with 26% of P. leniusculus surviving in the first replicate, compared to 42.3% of P. leniusculus, and 40.76% surviving in the second replicate, compared to 47.6% of P. leniusculus. The same trend was observed in the second experiment, with P. leniusculus showing survival rates of 48.5 and 55.3% (first and second replicates, respectively) in comparison to 65.2 and 68.2%, respectively, for A. leptodactylus. It is therefore highly likely that if P. leniusculus were to become established in Turkey, it would outcompete the native A. leptodactylus even if it were not to be devastated by the crayfish plague that has decimated the native species. The experiments also highlighted the problem of differential growth, with some juveniles hardly growing at all while others reached a relatively large size. The range in carapace length (CL) was 9–18 mm for A. leptodactylus and 8.5–18.5 mm CL for P. leniusculus at the end of the first experiment. While both species grew quickly, P. leniusculus hatched earlier, giving it an advantage over A. leptodactylus; consequently, by the end of the summer, the juveniles of the former were larger than those of A. leptodactylus. Specific growth rate values showed that the juveniles of the two species had similar growth rates. The results also revealed that growth was not significantly affected by density in both species at 15°C, but at 25°C, growth was significantly better at a density of 234 juveniles m−2 than at 468 juveniles m−2, and better at 468 juveniles m−2 than at 937 juveniles m−2 (P < 0.01 and P < 0.001, respectively). We conclude that P. leniusculus is a good candidate for aquaculture as it has a rapid growth rate and early hatching and maturity; however, its aggressive behavior may make it a less attractive proposition than A. leptodactylus, which is also fast growing but less aggressive. The production performance of genetically improved farmed tilapia (GIFT, Oreochromis niloticus) and freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) in periphyton‐based systems were studied in farmers' ponds at Mymensingh, Bangladesh. Fifteen ponds (200–300 m2 area and 1.0–1.5 m in depth) were used to compare five stocking ratios in triplicate: 100% GIFT, 75% GIFT plus 25% prawn, 50% GIFT plus 50% prawn, 25% GIFT plus 75% prawn and 100% prawn. Ponds were stocked at a total density of 20 000 GIFT and/or prawn ha?1. Bamboo poles (mean diameter 6.2 cm and 5.5 pole m?2) were posted in pond bottoms vertically as periphyton substrate. Periphyton biomass in terms of dry matter (DM), ash‐free DM and chlorophyll a were significantly higher in ponds stocked with prawn alone than in ponds with different combinations of GIFT and prawn. Survival of GIFT was significantly lower in ponds stocked with 100% GIFT (monoculture) whereas, that of prawn was significantly higher in its monoculture ponds indicating detrimental effects of GIFT on prawn's survival. Individual weight gains for both species were significantly higher in polyculture than in monoculture. The highest total fish and prawn yield (1623 kg GIFT and 30 kg prawn ha?1) over 125–140 days culture period was recorded in ponds with 75% GIFT and 25% prawn followed by 100% GIFT alone (1549 kg ha?1), 50% GIFT plus 50% prawn (1114 kg GIFT and 68 kg prawn ha?1), 25% GIFT plus 75% prawn (574 kg GIFT and 129 kg prawn ha?1) and 100% prawn alone (157 kg ha?1). This combination also gave the highest economic return. Therefore, a stocking ratio of 75% GIFT plus 25% prawn at a total density of 20 000 ha?1 appeared to be the best stocking ratio in terms of fish production as well as economics for a periphyton‐based polyculture system.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted during May to December 2002 to determine growth performance, the highest economic return and suitable species composition in the polyculture of Thai pangus (Pangasius hypophthalmus) with carps (catla, Catla catla and rohu, Labeo rohita) and freshwater giant prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) using low‐cost formulated feed. Three treatments (T1, T2 and T3) were conducted with three replications. The treatment T1 was designed as a monoculture of pangus with a stocking density of 17 500 individual ha?1. The other two treatments (T2 and T3) were designed as polyculture and stocked with pangus, catla, rohu and prawn with densities of 10 000, 2500, 5000, 3750 ha?1; and 10 000, 5000, 2500, 3750 ha?1 in T2 and T3 respectively. The net weight gain and production of pangus were significantly different (P>0.05) between monoculture and polyculture but were not different within the two polyculture systems. The production of catla and rohu were significantly different (P>0.05) in both treatments where prawn was not. Though the gross production (8.53 ton ha?1) was significantly (P>0.05) higher in T1, the higher gross net profit (Tk 154 201 ha?1) was in T2. Thus, the polyculture of pangus is more profitable than its monoculture and the species composition in T2 is more suitable than other composition.  相似文献
